"This paper discusses the project history, process design and layout of the Rainy River Gold Project mill. The circuit consists of a 55 x 83 primary crusher, 15 MW SAG mill and 15 MW ball mill. Both mills are twin pinion with LSS and VFD drives. A pebble crusher is located in the process plant with bypass and stockpile options. Gravity concentration followed by 30 hours of leach residence, carousel CIP, carbon recovery, cyanide destruction and tails disposal in a 1,428 hectare tailings management area (TMA).The Rainy River Gold Project is located approximately 65 km northwest of Fort Frances in north western Ontario. The project is scheduled to be commissioned and reach commercial production in mid-2017. Expected cost is $US877M and is comprised of an open pit mine, process plant, tailings management area and supporting infrastructure. This report is principally concerned with the engineering and economic feasibility of area surface coal mining systems other than draglines. This analysis evaluates shovel/ trucks, shovel/crusher/conveyors, and shovel/rail excavation and haulage systems for an assortment of geologic environments and production rates in the Powder River Basin (PRB). Shovel/trucks, front-end loaders trucks, and shovel/crusher/conveyors were studied in a multi-seam, dipping geologic area of the Four Corners Region. The Texas lignite engineering and economic research involved bucket-wheel excavators (BWE), BWE/backhoes, and scraper/backhoe combinations for overburden and coal excavation. The PRB truck/shovel study utilized the most recent computer simulation available in both the design and cost analyses. Detailed engineering analysis, followed by in-depth operating costs (operating and depreciation), result in a complete evaluation of each mining system. Cost comparisons of the different mining systems under similar geologic and production constraints are presented in the report to illustrate the estimated capital investment and production costs per ton of coal and bank cubic yard of overburden.

In 1985, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 54,480-acre portion of the 93,205-acre Dry Valley Rim Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-615), in order to evaluate its identified resources. The area studied is in Washoe County, NV, and Lassen County, CA, about 35 miles east of Susanville, CA. No metallic resources were identified. The Red Rock and Willow Springs areas contain 85 million tons of altered basalt with zeolite amygdules. This material, averaging more than 50 percent chabazite, constitutes a subeconomic zeolite resource. This zeolite-bearing material would require beneficiation to upgrade it for higher value uses. Natural zeolites have a small market in the United States, which is presently supplied by other higher grade material. There is low probability that these resources will be mined in the foreseeable future. The Capricorn claims, adjacent to the study area, are on alluvial sediments containing more than 30 percent montmorillonoid clays. The material is not usable as pozzolan and was not tested for other uses such as absorbency, oil clarification, or insecticide carrier. The term pozzolan refers to a number of siliceous materials which are combined with portland cement to enhance the physical properties of the resultant concrete. The area is remote from market and contains low value material. It is improbable that this occurrence will be mined in the foreseeable future.

The report provides a general description of DOM technology, sources for DOM technology, and identifies approaches and requirements for acquisition by the Enterprise of DOM technology by conventional means. The approaches identified assume the Enterprise enters into a contractual/ joint venture arrangement with an uncommitted and competent systems management firm at various stages of the DOM system acquisition process. The approaches provide for training through work/study as well as through direct participation in acquisition programs. The potential success of the alternatives are evaluated in terms of the likelihood of the acquisition of an ongoing Enterprise economic DOM operational capability. The study concludes that sources exist and that the Enterprise should under-take the development of its own technical capability through conceptual design prior to selecting its source for systems management expertise.

Laboratory test results are presented for the determination of elastic modulus made with the NX borehole jack. Determinations were made in massive pieces of aluminum so as to satisfy conditions of linear elasticity, homogeneity, and isotropy. Results indicate a large discrepancy (approximately 200 percent) betwen material modulus as determined by laboratory block-loading tests and that indicated by the jack under relatively ideal circumstances. Effects due to interface friction, finite block size, incomplete plate-bore contact, and other factors were examined and found not to be significant. Finite element results indicate that assumed loading conditions for the jack differ from those actually occurring, at least in materials of high elastic modulus (approximately 10 million psi), such as quartzite.

Examples are presented in which Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) was employed to locate deformation of rock masses induced by mining. The first example involved motoring the propagation of overburden fractures above a longwall coal panel and the second example involved the we of a)R to monitor rock mass deformation in the vicinity of a strip mine highwall. Bock mass deformation, strata separation and large block movement generated strains and failure along coaxial cables which were installed in drill holes and the TDR reflections generated by these strains and failures were monitored. Analysis of field data and a preliminary laboratory test indicate that it may be possible not only to locate rock mass movements but also to quantify these movements with TDR data.

The Ashanti mine, located in Obusai, Ghana, West Africa, has been in production for over 100 years, and is currently the second largest single gold producer in Africa. The mine covers a concession area of 434 square kilometers with four main ore types: the quartz vein type, disseminated sulphide type, supergene sulphides and transition ore, and granitoids stock works (visible gold and quartz veinlets). Various mining strategies and methods have been employed for the mining of the narrow-vein ore at Ashanti. In recent years, the mine owner: Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. has embarked on a mine-wide expansion program to boost production to a target of one million ounces per annum. With the rapid depletion of its high-grade ore, a suitable mining method was required to produce a high tonnage at low cost to meet production objectives. This paper discusses how the Ashanti mine applied Canada experiences in mining technology to boost production, and the impact that the differing geological settings between the two countries had on the stope performance at the Ashanti operations. Experience developed at the Ashanti mine led to innovative modifications for stope layout and design methods in relatively poor ground conditions.

In ventilated tunnel fires, smoke and hot combustion products may form a layer near the ceiling and flow in the direction opposite to the ventilation stream. The existence of this reverse stratified flow has an important bearing on fire fighting and evacuation of underground mine roadways, tunnels and building corridors. In the present study, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a CFD program (fire dynamics simulator) based on large eddy simulations (LES) is used to model floor-level fires in a ventilated tunnel. Specifically, the critical ventilation velocity that is just sufficient to prevent the formation of a reverse stratified layer is simulated for two tunnels of different size. The computer code is verified by checking the computed velocity profile against experimental measurements. The CFD results show the leveling-off of the critical ventilation velocity as the heat release rate surpasses a certain value. At this critical ventilation, the ceiling temperature above the fire reaches a maximum for both tunnels. The velocity leveling-off can be explained from this observation. An extended correlation of Newman (Combust. Flame 57 (1984) 33) is applied to the temperature profiles obtained by CFD. At the critical ventilation, temperature stratification exists downstream from the fire. The computed critical ventilation velocity shows fair agreement with available experimental data taken from both horizontal and inclined fire tunnels. The CFD simulations indicate that the Froude modeling is an approximation for tunnel fires. The Froude-scaling law does not apply to two geometrically similar fire tunnels. This is the final report for U.S. Bureau of Mines contract HO-122122, which was in effect from June 30, 1972 through January 4, 1976. The work resulted in the design and construction of a large laboratory scale coal dust burner and the use of this burner to study gaseous and coal dust flammability. A new technique for determining gas phase flammability was developed and the effect of solid and gaseous suppressants on the propagation of coal dust flames was studied. In addition, a technique for measuring the C/H ratio in the flame was developed and the C/H ratio that was measured in a coal dust flame on this burner showed that the burning process was preceeded by pyroysis of the coal dust. Both experimental and theoretical studies showed that radiative trans-port is very important to the propagation of a coal dust flame.

Knowing more about an orebody makes it easier to exploit it profitably. Many orebodies are made up of different rock types, alteration zones or mineralogical ensembles: oxides versus sulphides or facies with different metallurgical properties for example. Being able to model the spatial layout of these different facies is vital to good mine planning and management. Kriging cannot be used to generate numerical models of orebodies with complex geometric patterns because it gives too smooth an image. Over-smoothing has the meaning of changing the natural selectivity. Conditional simulations are required to do this kind of model respecting the natural variability: honouring the natural selectivity, dilution and ore loss. Standard geostatistical simulations cannot duplicate many of the complex spatial relationships seen in the earth sciences, such as differently orientated facies, sets of conjugate veins or ore types where certain facies cannot touch. After a presentation of the case study, it will be shown why traditional methods for simulating indicators like the sequential indicator simulations, or the truncated gaussian method, cannot be used to simulate it. Plurigaussian simulations are then introduced and shown to be more powerful than the previous methods in their range of application. This is confirmed by the case study treated; a Chilean copper deposit, for which the plurigaussian simulations are seen to respect the different orientations of the individual facies as well as honouring the facies seen in drill holes, and respecting the proportion of each facies even if this varies in space (e.g. increases or decreases with depth). This is the final report of a study done by IIT Research Institute for the Bureau of Mines to identify the problem areas and technological inadequacies in noncoal (metal, nonmetal, stone, and sand and gravel) mining and processing systems that are the primary causes of death, injury and occupational disease, and to make recommendations to improve safety and health in these operations. The findings and recommendations presented in the report are based on: (1) analyses of MESA injury and employment data for the period 1961-70, MESA fatality reports for underground noncoal mines (1968-72) and lost time accident data for 1970-72 obtained from mining and processing operation: (2) visits to a variety of noncoa1 mines and mills throughout the country to observe the operations and to study the safety organization and practices used in the industry and (3) interviews with industry and government representatives knowledgeable in the field of noncoa1 mining and processing safety and health. The report provides a comprehensive overview of safety and health problems.

INCREASED production and utilization of minerals fuels and power accompanied the overall expansion in U.S. economic activity during 1963, which saw continued advances toward higher production, employment, and purchasing power. During 1963, record levels of wages, profits, and consumption were attained, while costs and prices maintained the stability exhibited throughout most of the recovery period. Expanding industrial production, the average index of which went from 118.3 in 1962 to 124.3 in 1963, narrowed the gap of unused manufacturing capacity to an estimated 5 percent. Gross national product (GNP), another major indicator of economic activity, reached a record level of $583.9 million (current dollars) during the year, this being $27.7 billion, or 4.9 percent above 1962. These achievements were somewhat marred by unemployment, which remained at 5.5 percent of the labor force in 1963, and the continued deficit in the U.S. balance of payments. Against this general background, total national consumption of energy resources for the year was equivalent to 49,816 trillion British thermal units (Btu), an increase of 4.2 percent over 1962. This represented a somewhat lower rate of growth than for GNP during the year.

The depletion of good-quality phosphate resources, coupled by a need to supply acceptable products at a rapid rate, while meeting the specifications of fertilizer chemical plants, is of significant concern to the phosphate industry, particularly the production of concentrates with tolerable dolomite content. Tremendous efforts have been made in the past to develop an efficient and economical process that can effectively reject dolomite. However, dolomite removal continues to plague the phosphate industry due to several process-specific challenges being encountered with various beneficiation technologies. In this regard, detailed characterization of phosphate reserves is crucial to understand textural limitations and help design appropriate strategies to achieve quality products. In this paper, the development of procedures to establish dolomite rejection/francolite recovery curves for gravity preconcentration of pebble phosphate from Central Florida is described using high-speed X-ray computed tomography (HSXCT). The developed procedure is illustrated with the analysis of high MgO pebble phosphate samples (10.39 mm × 1 mm) received from South Pasture and Four Corners locations operated by the Mosaic company. The rejection/recovery curves were calculated for each sample for five different particle size classes to observe the trend in rejection/recovery with variation in particle size. In order to evaluate the reliability of the HSXCT data, analysis using the high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) technique was performed on one particular sample (FC-3-1). Finally, to assess the separation efficiency, the HSXCT and HRXCT rejection/recovery curves obtained were compared to experimental gravity preconcentration results reported in the literature. In this way, liberation limitations for gravity preconcentration in the processing of pebble phosphate have been established based on X-ray computed tomography analysis.

Tri-axial strains in pillars, created by pillar robbing, were measured in an experiment at the Dysart No. 1 uranium mine near Grants) New Mexico. At this mine, room-and-pillar stoping is used on the advance, and pillars are recovered on the retreat. The are deposit is, for all practical purposes, horizontal. Measuring devices were installed in pillars approximately 90 to 200 feet from the break line, and strains were recorded over a 4-to 6-week period. The measurements indicate that, in general, the algebraic magnitude of vertical strains increased, and the horizontal strains decreased, in turn, indicating that vertical (or near vertical) loads on the instrumented pillars lessened as pillars were recovered.

As part of a $2.2 Billion bridge project that will link Indiana and Kentucky, an interchange project northeast of Louisville will require the mining of a 6-lane tunnel system about 2,000 ft long in order to cross beneath the historic Drumanard Estate. This paper will discuss preliminary engineering that has been undertaken to compare two-bore and three-bore layouts, the planning of an exploratory tunnel facility, and the potential for including a test chamber to investigate the ability of high capacity roadheaders to mine the 22,000 psi limestones.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. Major mechanical components in the hoist and mechanical drive train are considered. Design and specification criteria based on American standards and practices are developed as they apply to typical mine hoist arrangements.

"For its end of life, Kemess Mine processed its difficult-to-treat hypogene ore from the east pit, which is a lower grade copper and higher pyrite content gold ore. Metallurgical testwork showed that improvement was possible with finer grinding. In July 2010, small grinding media were introduced into the regrind mill resulting to a nearly 50% decrease of the power draw with a finer grind, an increase of 1.1% in the final copper grade, an increase of 1.2% in copper and 2.9% in gold recoveries at the cleaners. The overall recoveries of copper and gold increased by 0.6% and 1.3% respectively.INTRODUCTION Kemess Mine was located at 430 km North West of Prince George in North Central British Colombia. Its production started in May 1998 by Royal Oak Mines and was acquired by Northgate Exploration in 2000. Kemess reached its end of life production with its last of production on March 9th, 2011. The concentrator nominal capacity was 56,000 TPD consisting of a primary gyratory crusher feeding two identical conventional SAB circuits totalizing 35,840 kW available for grinding. Rougher flotation consists of four parallel rows of eight 130 m³ tank cells to produce a concentrate of 2% Cu and 6 gr/t Au which was pumped to a 5 m x 10.8 m regrind ball mill. The regrind installed power was 4,480 kW to generate a final grind of 80% passing 40 microns. This product fed the two stage cleaner flotation circuit, first stage being two parallel rows conventional 17 m³ Denver cells and second stage, two 3.3 m x 11.0 m flotation columns in series, designed and constructed by Kemess, to produce a 22% copper concentrate grade. The cleaner flotation middlings were returned back to the regrind mill (Froehling, Mohns, Roman & Grady, 2005; Froehling, Mohns, Rajwani & Fullam, 2007). The large copper-gold porphyry deposit was composed of 15% of oxidized supergene and leach cap ore and 85% of hypogene ore having three major alteration zones, mainly characterized by their sulphur/sulphide content. Chalcopyrite is the main copper mineral species with minor bornite. Gold was mainly present as free gold or electrum. The first alteration zone consisted of a phyllic alteration characterized by moderate and intense sericite alteration which had the highest mill throughput and twice the mine grade when in contact with the supergene horizon. The second zone consisted of a potassic alteration characterized by more competent groundmass and moderate to intense quartz stockwork which had a slightly lower mill throughput. Finally, a third alteration found beneath and on the east side of the deposit having almost no quartz stockwork and hardened groundmass, sulphide content is two to four times more. This zone had the lower mill throughput with significant drop in the mine average gold and copper grade. Through its mine life, the average life of mine copper head grade was 0.21% Cu and 0.64 gr/t Au. Head grades began to decrease from 2008 to be substantially lower in 2011 as shown in Table 1."

This report summarizes a study conducted to establish the nature and impact of regulations governing disposal of refuse from underground coal mines. The regulations affecting refuse disposal in eight major coal producing states are collected, summarized and reviewed. Federal regulations applicable to refuse generated by underground coal mines are also included. Common refuse disposal practices are discussed as are the refuse quantities generated annually in each study state. Technical requirements of regulations are discussed acid presented in appended tables. Economic implications are also assessed through cost analyses of three major types of disposal processes. The report also includes an assessment of future trends in regulation and refuse generation plus a series of recommendations concerning potential improvements in both the regulatory and refuse disposal processes.

Built in 1806, Boston's African Meeting House is the oldest surviving Black church building in the country. A $7 million dollar renovation was begun in 2006 to restore this historic building to its 1855 appearance and to modernize the building's accessibility, electrical and mechanical systems. As part of the restoration, an underground utility room and elevator tower, needed to provide handicap access to the Meeting House, were constructed. Extending up to 17 feet below the foundations of the abutting buildings, the utility room was constructed within one foot of some of Boston's oldest and most expensive residences. All equipment and materials had to enter the work area through a narrow alley rendering conventional methods of excavation and construction of earth support using heavy equipment unfeasible. A unique combination of micropiles, structural cap beam, internal struts and shotcrete facing was designed and constructed to provide the permanent and temporary support of the lateral loads from the earth pressures and adjacent building surcharges and the vertical loads from the elevator tower. The narrow and congested streets of the Beacon Hill neighborhood presented many day-to-day challenges for the contractor.
