All mining and quarrying operations that employ blasting to fragment and move broken ground have a price to pay for æby-productsÆ such as vibration and noise. These æby-productsÆ cannot be eliminated but they can be controlled and modern blasting techniques have improved to the point that excessive environmental restrictions can be adhered to whilst maintaining acceptable production rates and quality. Accurate measurement is the key to control, and as the environmental limits are becoming tighter, the proper way to measure vibrations from blasting operations becomes an integral part of the mining or quarrying operations. The basic vibration monitoring system consists of a primary sensor connected to a data logger and computer software for the analysis of the signal received and recorded. Currently, as with all fields of measurement, much improvement has occurred over the past decade, and electronic devices are much more accurate and reliable. Data analysis has also improved considerably with the computing power that is available to field operatives today. Mounting the primary sensor has been often overlooked in supposed æstandardsÆ with procedures such as double sided tape, resting on a flat surface provided the vibration level is less than a given amount. But if it is worth going to the expense of the monitoring equipment and manpower, surely it is worth a little extra effort to ensure the primary sensor is coupled to the ground effectively. The primary sensor must move with the ground and measure this movement; so if the primary sensor is allowed to move without respect to the ground (ie poor coupling to the ground) then a false record of the physical event will be measured. This scenario can easily be a practical reality if the primary sensor coupling method to the ground is not effective. In this study a number of mounting methods were fabricated and connected to similar data monitors and a series of ænormalÆ production blasts were used as the vibration source. These mounting devices were measured against an in-house procedure (the æstandardÆ) and the relative merits compared. A laboratory investigation was also carried out to look at the physical parameters of the æsoil and their effect on vibration attenuation of the in-house standard method.

Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority is currently undertaking the first Phase of Metro?s Extension to Northern Virginia. A wide range of tunnel options was considered for the Tysons Corner segment that involves about 20,000 feet of track and four stations. After consideration of many options that involved EPBM single track tunnels, NATM tunnels and large bore tunnel concepts for the entire Tysons alignment, the design now being progressed into construction involves two 520 meter (1,700 feet) long soft ground NATM tunnels with several hundred feet of cut-and-cover construction. The paper discusses the process that led to selection of the short NATM tunnels as the most feasible of the options considered for Tysons.

This handbook describes effective methods for the control of mineral dusts in mines and tunnels. It assumes the reader is familiar with mining. The first chapter deals solely with dust control methods, regardless of the application. It is a brief tutorial on mining dust control and will be of help to the reader whose dust control problem does not conveniently fit any of the mining equipment niches described in later chapters. The subsequent chapters describe dust control methods for different kinds of mines and mining equipment. This includes underground coal and hard-rock mines, as well as surface mines, stone mines, and hard-rock tunnels. Because dust sampling has so many pitfalls, a chapter on methods used to sample dust is included. For those occasions when there is no practical engineering control, a chapter on respirators is also included. Except for those listed as ?future possibilities? in the longwall chapter, the dust control methods described are practical and cost-effective for most mine operators. If controlling dust were a simple matter, dust problems in tunnels and mines would have been eradicated years ago. Unfortunately, most underground dust control methods yield only 25% to 50% reductions in respirable-sized dust. Often, 25% to 50% reductions are not enough to achieve compliance with dust standards. Thus, mine operators must use several methods simultaneously, usually without knowing for sure how well any individual method is working. In fact, given a 25% error in dust sampling and day-to-day variations in dust generation of 50% or more, certainty about which control methods are most effective can be wanting. Nevertheless, over the years, some consensus has emerged on the best dust control practices. This handbook summarizes those practices.

The ACARP Landmark initiative has created the opportunity to advance the level of automation in the coal industry by first focusing on the core production area of longwall mining. A Landmark Longwall Automation project was commenced in July 2001. The major outcome of automation using on-face observation has been divided into ten outcome areas that have been fully scoped for a three-year initial project life. A major facilitating technology has been the implementation inertial navigation system (INS) technology that can map the shearer position in 3D. A focus of the project is to deliver a system that is at least as productive as the current most productive manually controlled longwall face.

In connection with the reduction of hematite or magnetite to metallic iron, it appeared desirable to study the rate of reduction of each oxide to the next lower oxide under conditions which excluded all other condensed phases. For this purpose, pellets of Fe,O,, Fe,O,, and oFeOo were prepared. A gas train for the preparation of Ar-Hz-H20 mixtures was employed to establish a continuous flow of a controlled atmosphere over a pellet suspended on a balance. In this manner the following individual reduction steps could be studied: For example, pellets of hematite were reduced solely to magnetite by adjusting the gas atmosphere such that it was oxidizing to wustite. In other words, the reaction was complete when the hematite pellet had been totally converted to magnetite. The pellets were prepared from Baker Chemical ferric oxide. The ferric oxide powder was moistened and handrolled. Air sintering at 950°C produced Fe,0, pellets with a density of 3.65 g per cm3. The pellets ranged in size from 0.6 to 1.2 cm diam. The reduction of iron dissolution and acid consumption is fairly important in the extraction of Ni and Co from laterite ores from both economic and efficiency perspectives. BGRIMM conducted detailed research to investigate the behavior of iron in a nickel laterite leaching process. The mineralogy of Ni and Co was studied. In limonite ore about 76% of nickel is present in goethite while in saprolite ore 79% of nickel is associated with magnesium and silicon minerals. Test work revealed that limonite can be decomposed completely with enough acid concentration during atmospheric leaching. More than 98% of Ni and Co were leached into solution while 85% of the iron was also dissolved with 130-140 g/L iron in solution. Iron precipitates as hematite in the temperature range 250-270?C without neutralization reagents. That’s why limonite is treated by high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) technology to achieve nickel extraction and iron precipitation in the same autoclave. BGRIMM’s test results indicated that the remaining acid in atmospheric leaching solution and acid released by iron precipitation at a lower temperature was enough to leach saprolite efficiently. The so-called inverse leaching technology leaches limonite at atmospheric condition and the leaching slurry combined with saprolite is pumped into an autoclave to leach saprolite at 150-170?C. In the autoclave iron precipitates as hematite without acid consumption. Total nickel and cobalt extractions in the test program were more than 90% with iron content in solution below 8 g/L. In this inverse process iron dissolves in the atmospheric leaching stage and precipitates as hematite in the low temperature leaching stage. Compared with HPAL the leaching temperature is reduced to 150-170 ºC from 250-270 ºC. Compared to atmospheric tank leaching acid consumption is reduced from 850-950 kg/t ore (atmospheric) to 550-650 kg/t ore (inverse).

Resources and reserves are critical inputs into the determination of an operating mineÆs financial results and balance sheets, but how well understood is this fact. Do the investors, directors, accountants and geologists/engineers responsible for preparing or relying on relevant aspects of the end results properly understand the inputs and outputs and the associated risks that may be established. The first step is to understand how financial reports are impacted. The most obvious, and best known, impact is in the calculation of depreciation and amortisation charges against long term assets. In addition, however, there is a requirement to regularly determine whether asset book values are impaired û this is nearly always performed globally by the preparation of a discounted cashflow model for a mine which is usually based on a mine life as determined from the resource and reserve statement û the particular driver here is normally the short and long term production plans. A key aspect of the short term production plan is that it would normally not assume that the reserve and resource statement implies consistent grade, stripping ratios, etc. However, outside of the early years of a plan, more generic assumptions of these variables are often made in conjunction with the reserve and resource statement. Depending on the timeframe of the detailed production plans, this can have a large impact on a projectÆs net present value. Other financial balances that may also be impacted include restoration and rehabilitation provisions, retrenchment provisions and deferred or equalisation stripping accounts. The age old question of whether all reserves should be used or whether some or all of the resources should be included for financial reporting purposes has never been adequately resolved. It is our view that there should be no prescriptive answer to this question but judgement of all professionals involved in the process needs to be included. Furthermore, the company needs to be able to support their conclusions with well thought out and appropriate answers. This may not be in line with the approach that certain accounting standard setters may be proposing or taking, and this paper will outline the current status of global requirement and the likely future directions. Whether reserves or resources are utilised, does not change the key requirement that those preparing or using reserve and resource statements need to understand key aspects. For example: geologists/engineers do they know how reserves or resources will be used? have they imparted information on variability of key drivers such as grade or depth or dilution? do they know that major financial/business altering decisions may be made based on the analysis? accountants do they understand where the numbers have been derived from and the assumptions that may have been made in their determination? do they understand the degree of accuracy (or inaccuracy) that may exist particularly with resources)? do they understand the history of resource reconciliations and what it may mean for the future? directors do they understand the processes undertaken by the company to prepare the financial report and the interaction between the geologists/engineers and accountants? do they understand the potential sensitivity of results to the input variables? Financial reporting is extremely reliant on the use of the reserves and resources, however, the geologists/engineers, accountants and directors do not always understand the interactions between themselves which may lead to misleading public reporting. More education and communication between various parties is needed.

The general history of piling is traced up to the present time with regard to the evolution of methods and materials. The processes have been strongly influenced by developments in basic equipment and industrial change. It is noticeable that in the twentieth century more progress has taken place than in the many previous centuries. It has been strongly influenced by the general development of Soil Mechanics. Test loading is probably the most effective way to assess the success of designs and many empirical relationships have been challenged through it. As we approach a new century it appears that it will be an age of rapid equipment development, with much enhancement of understanding of what has been done. Processes of automatic construction and testing will becoming commonplace. These changes will narrow the limits of conventional scatter that have come to be accepted and to a large extent will be driven by political efforts to curtail energy consumption, to raise standards of quality and reliability, and to conserve the environment. 1. Ancient history. Piling is an ancient art. Its first mention in history is from Herodotus, the first person to commit an account of his times to the written word in the years 557 to 479 BC. He evidently had a strong interest in engineering matters because he wrote of building, brick making, reinforced brickwork, river training, canal building, bridge construction, tunnelling and its acoustic detection and piling. The piling reference comes from Book 5 at paragraph 16.

In a German governmental funded three-year research project, a closed loop recycling process for Nickel-Metalhydride-Batteries (NiMH) is under development. Today the discarded batteries are used in the steel industry as a cheap nickel source. Cobalt and rare earth (RE) are slagged and lost for reuse. The entire value of the metals in discarded Ni-MH is estimated to be 4?-4.5 ?/kg. Spent NiMH-batteries containing 36?42 per cent Ni, 3?4 per cent Co and 8?10 per cent rare rarth (Ce,La, Pr, Nd). The dismantled and processed NiMH-batteries are melted in a DC electric arc furnace producing a nickel-cobalt alloy and a slag phase highly enriched with RE-oxides. The key to success in this process is to find a suitable slag system, which ensures best separation of NiCo-alloy from the rare earth oxides and high concentration of RE in the slag. Different oxidic and halogenic slag systems are investigated in the melting process. So far a slag system based on 65per cent CaF2 and 35 per cent CaO delivers the best separation of the two phases and metal yields. A slag with a composition of 20?25 per cent La, 13-16 per cent Ce, 1.5?2.5 Pr, 4.5?6.5 per cent Nd is obtained and further treated to misch metal hydro-/electrometallurgically. The first results of the influence of rare earth oxides on the density of CaO-CaF2slag system are shown at 1600°C. PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation that has been in production for 15 years. DOZ is located approximately 900 m below surface and has an average production rate of more than 5000 t/d. The footprint of the extraction level will ultimately be 900 m long and average more than 200 m wide. The undercut level is located 20 m above the extraction level.While developing Panel 1K on the northern portion of the extraction level, a major geotechnical problem was encountered when there was a change in lithology and an associated fault intersection. A large collapse of the hanging wall of the extraction level drifts occurred in the area of the fault intersection between February and March 2011. This was followed by a collapse of one of the undercut level drifts directly above the extraction level in May 2011.It was suggested that the best approach to mitigate risk during rehabilitation was to systematically open up the failed area under the protection of a steel set support system. To achieve this, approximately 60 t of grout was injected from the undercut level to fill the voids created when the rock mass between the two levels failed. A ground penetrating radar system was used to survey the condition of the rock mass between the two levels before and after the injection of grout. After the grout injection phase was completed to a satisfactory level of confidence, rehabilitation activities started on the extraction level by taking out the now consolidated material from inside the drift in 2 m advances from under steel sets initially constructed in secured ground.Controlled blasting was the key aspect to the success of the initiative to open up just enough of the drift to systematically support the rock mass before the next set was installed. The systematic support consisted of in-cycle shotcrete sprayed over mesh pinned to the exposed rock, as effectively as possible, with splitsets before spiling the next advance’s protection canopy with rebar. Once secure, a combination of steel set and pumped concrete was installed as the final support. This paper describes the design and construction of two high-capacity rock anchors to restrain a supplementary backstay for the Bear Mountain Bridge, which is a suspension bridge spanning the Hudson River about 40 miles north of New York City. The supplementary backstay was installed to relieve a portion of the tension in the southern main cable, which had been creeping in recent years. The two new rock anchors were 1,200 kip capacity each, installed at a batter to depths of 59 feet. This paper describes the subsurface investigation, group capacity analysis, installation and load testing. The rock anchors included strain gages connected to the monitoring system for the bridge. The paper describes the long term strain gage data which shows no change in stress distribution in either anchor.

"Generation and removal of fines are considered in the context of the mill and classifier as a single-unit process in which grinding rates and mechanisms, mill residence time distribution, circulating load, and classifier performance all interact to effect the overall grinding circuit productivity. Required process design specifications are identified, and a computer assisted design procedure for application of hydrocyclones in closed circuit grinding is presented. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of the grinding circuit is to carry out the size reduction necessary to suitably prepare material for the upgrading process(I) The desired product size specification being the d1st1nguishing criterion between the ""fines"" (smaller than desired product size) and the ""coarse"" fraction (larger than desired product size), the capability of the grinding circuit to perform its task effectively depends on the nature of two processes that are taking place;(a) size reduction of the coarse material, and,(b) removal of fines from the system."

The HILTI OneStep rockbolt was implemented for roadway development in German deep coal mines in 2004. The development by HILTI Company is based on a technical joint venture with RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG. The technical development of a One-Step bolting system was required for weak strata conditions at the roadway development face. Standard resin bolting has reached the limit of performance when boreholes are squeezed and cannot be filled with capsules. In some cases the heading face is brittle and requires additional support for installation of the bolts and a person working immediately next to the borehole. The Hilti One-Step system allows automated and safe processing at the heading front and provides the key technique to avoid these problems.

This paper summarizes diamond exploration techniques used in glaciated terrain, focusing on indicator mineral and geochemical methods applied to glacial sediments. Understanding the ice flow history, depositional history, and stratigraphy of glacial sediments are essential to successful sampling, interpretation and follow-up of indicator mineral and geochemical anomalies related to kimberlites. Kimberlite indicator minerals survive glacial transport over long distances and the relative abundance of each mineral in till is a function of the primary mineralogy of individual kimberlites. Indicator mineral distributions observed at a regional scale define the net effect of glacial dispersal, often along different ice flow directions. Local-scale distributions define individual dispersal trains. The medium sand (0.25 to 0.5 mm) fraction of heavy mineral concentrates prepared from glacial sediment samples is best suited for indicator mineral surveys. The application of till geochemistry to diamond exploration is increasing because it is significantly cheaper than indicator mineral analysis and it can be performed quickly. The <0.063 mm (silt+clay) and 0.5 to 2.0 mm (coarse sand) fractions provide the best geochemical contrast between background and kimberlite-rich till. Kimberlite pathfinder elements that provide good contrast include Ni, Cr, Ba, Co, Sr, Rb, Nb, Mg, Ta, Ca, Fe, K, Ti and REE, the relative importance of which will depend on kimberlite composition as well as that of the surrounding bedrock.

Equipment maintenance is 30 - 50 per cent of the operating costs for a typical mining company. While this is substantial, its importance is beyond its significance as a cost heading. Modern mining requires large amounts of investment in capital infrastructure and equipment to produce a product sold at a low unit cost. To stay competitive, such a business has to focus on full realisation of its capital investment, ie sustained production at high levels. Maintenance plays an essential role in achieving this goal. Mining companies typically use a mix of breakdown or corrective maintenance, planned maintenance, and some condition-based maintenance. The share of breakdown maintenance has been coming down through more effective planned maintenance and better condition monitoring tools. Planned or preventive maintenance (PM) is playing an increasingly important role in todayÆs mining maintenance. This is the suite of inspection and repair/replacement actions performed at scheduled time intervals as part of a preplanned activity. The activities are scheduled well in advance and, usually, the current wear-state of the machine is irrelevant. For example, the replacement of a major gear may have been planned 18 months in advance; replacement is carried out when the time comes regardless of the actual condition of the gear. The PM costs are significant and include direct cost of parts and labour as well as the opportunity cost of lost production while the machine is under maintenance. It is important to identify the optimum PM effort because over-maintenance should be avoided as much as under-maintenance. A new concept called severity-based maintenance is introduced in this paper. We have seen that measuring equipment ageing in mining merely by counting the engine hours is a very imprecise way of planning and scheduling maintenance because the damage accumulated in one hour varies enormously from operator to operator and with changing pit conditions. We recommend continuous monitoring of duty on all major equipment. This is feasible without having to fit out the machine with an army of sensors because most of the physical sensors required by dutymeters are already installed and maintained as part of the existing performance monitors. While the investment is modest, the potential benefits are huge and can be grouped under three headings:Immediate benefits will come from providing operators with direct feedback on the effect of their behaviour on machine health and training them to use this feedback to correct their operating style. The equipment can operate closer to the limits of capacity, producing more without unduly sacrificing the availability by monitoring and controlling the severity of the operation, ie the duty on the machine. Longer term benefits accrue from establishing correlations between actual time to failure data and measured equipment duty and using these correlations to optimise maintenance effort as well as planning new equipment purchases and warranty conditions.

Although surface chemistry fundamentals of semi-soluble minerals have been studied by many researchers, detailed understanding of these systems is still incomplete. In-situ FT-IR/IRS techniques have recently been used to successfully describe the adsorption of carboxylates at semi-soluble mineral surfaces. However, the wetting characteristics of these adsorbed films require further consideration. In this regard, the hydrophobicity and stability of transferred Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of fatty acids at fluorite and calcite surfaces has been studied by contact angle measurements with polar and apolar liquids. Generally, it was found that the transferred LB monolayers of fatty acids at a calcite surface are unstable whereas such monolayers transferred at a fluorite surface are stable, as revealed from advancing and receding contact angle measurements. These results are believed to be due to the incomplete reaction of fatty acid monolayer at the calcite surface. In addition it was found that a closely packed well-ordered stearate monolayer with good hydrophobicity, equivalent to that of a transferred LB monolayer, can be formed at fluorite surfaces by spontaneous adsorption and self-assembly from aqueous solutions.

"Since the establishment of froth flotation as an effective method of mineral beneficiation there has been both academic and industrial interest in the levels of the various reagents required to perform the desired separations. Academic interest was spurred by a desire to understand the mechanisms involved - industrial interest by a need to improve the efficiency of the process. These efficiency improvements can take two forms: cost reductions due to reduced reagent consumption and/or improved separation efficiencies. The latter are indicated by either improved grade-recovery relationships for removal of a valuable mineral from gangue, or improved separation of two similar valuable minerals.The processing of lower grade ore bodies at higher tonnage rates has necessitated increased interest in both reagent consumption and metal recovery. Furthermore, the development of accurate and functional on-stream analysis equipment in the 1960's and 1970's has allowed for a better understanding of the dynamic processes involved in a flotation circuit and has required a more concrete statement of the relationships and reactions between the minerals and chemicals in the flotation pulp. Development of these relationships is necessary in order to make use of on-stream analysis to control the process at, or near its more efficient level."
