The Gilt Edge Superfund Site is a former heap-leach gold mine that currently is being remediated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mine runoff water is treated before release from the site. The field pH, before treatment, is about 3, and the water contains arsenic and some heavy metals, in addition to sulfate concentrations of about 1400 to 1500 mg/L. In the Keystone area of the Black Hills, naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in ground-water samples from wells. Keystone City Well #4, which is not used currently, showed arsenic concentrations of 36 parts per billion (ppb) and sulfate concentrations of about 19 mg/L. With field samples of water from these sites, a limestone-based method was successful in reducing arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. The results are significant because previous research with the limestone-based method mainly had involved samples prepared with distilled water in the laboratory, in which interference of other ions such as sulfate did not occur. The research indicates the potential for broader field applications of the limestone-based removal method.

In the minerals industry allocating capital for setting up a new project or for upgrading an existing facility usually requires that a compromise be found between the initial cost of equipment, its operating performance and on-going operating costs. To maximise the return on the investment usually requires that various possible combinations and layouts of equipment be assessed. This task is both difficult and time consuming. Computer simulation can be used as a means of determining the expected operating performance of a range of alternate equipment configurations. Simulation is a particularly important technique for analysis as it is one of the few approaches that allows the analyst to take into account the variability inherent in a mining process. While computer simulation is a well established technique its use, until recent years, has been limited to large organisations with access to substantial computing facilities. However, with the current availability of low cost computing platforms combined with easily understood animated displays, simulation is now becoming more widely used across the industry.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the technical and economic constraints on the extraction and utilization of anthracite coal and to determine the research and development needed in order to make anthracite coal more fully utilized as a premium energy resource. In the report the contractor examines in detail the anthracite industry both past and present and evaluates market possibilities. Anthracite reserves and resources are analyzed and tabulated, and the problem of pumping and drainage from the flooded anthracite fields is covered. Current technology is considered in detail with a discussion of production techniques with potential for improvement. The contractor concludes the report with a summary of constraints on the anthracite industry and the contractor's recommendations for effecting a revitalization of that industry. An estimated production of 17 million tons annually by 1990 can be anticipated if adequate planning, research, and development to overcome present constraints are initiated in the near future.

Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

Interest in 26 prospective and 46 potential Opencast sites ? Approximately 417 million tonnes of proven and probable reserves and considerable mineral resource ? 9 million tonnes of coal stocks ? Long term contracts to supply approximately 90 million tonnes of coal to National Power and PowerGen to the period of 3 March 1998 ?Approximately 7,600 employees and 4,500 mining contractual labour. "Through the years, a wide variety of dust control methods have been utilized at mineral processing operations. While some have been successful, many have been highly ineffective. Dust Control systems currently in use include baghouse systems, fog systems, surfactant spray systems, and foam dust suppression. While baghouse systems can be effective, they are capitalintensive and costly to operate and maintain. Chemical dust control programs can be very effective. However, if applied incorrectly, they can have detrimental effect on mineral recovery. Thus, many operations utilize a combination of baghouses and water, often with limited success.Recent advancements in surfactant and polymer chemistry have resulted in substantially improved chemical dust suppression programs. These products range from non-corrosive surfactant/humectant combinations for road dust control to foam-based systems for crushers and transfer points, to advanced polymers for pile binding and soil stabilization. These advances are discussed in detail, citing results from fieldwork in the precious and base metals industries.INTRODUCTIONThe global nature of the mineral processing industry presents a unique set of challenges. Traditional thinking would tell us what works in one place should work in another. This could not be further from the truth in the area of dust control. We learn very quickly that there are a number of factors that can affect the efficiency and success of a dust control program and that these factors are not all chemical or equipment related. Some of these factors include facility maintenance, product selection, water quality and characteristics, and economic considerations.What has been learned from past experience is that each mineral processing plant presents a unique set of factors that will affect the ability to create an optimal dust control program. This paper presents a myriad of treatment options that will highlight the advancements in chemical dust suppression products and equipment."

"The BHP Diamonds Inc. and Blackwater Group (Dia Met Minerals Ltd., Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson) joint venture began production at Canada=s first diamond mine during the last quarter of 1998.Construction of the processing plant began in mid 1997. During the 1998 winter season, the heavy process plant equipment was delivered to the Ekati site, 300 km NE of Yellowknife, by the ice road. Towards mid 1998 the construction activities were complete and commissioning began. The mine officially opened in October 1998.Initial production of 9000 tpd kimberlite will be from the Panda pipe grading 1.09 ct/t at an average value of US$13O/ct.Processing starts with a gyratory crusher reducing the ROM kimberlite to 90% passing 15Omm before further reduction to minus 75mm in a WaterFlush crusher. The crusher product discharges into a 4m diameter x 7m long primary scrubber. After screening, the minus 75 +1 mm kimberlite is conveyed to a 250 ft feed bin ahead of the 1.7 m diameter x 1.1 m wide high pressure grinding roll. The HPGR produces 50% minus lmm in a single pass, the compacted flake product is dis-agglomerated in a secondary scrubber. The scrubber product is screened into a minus 25 +lmm heavy medium separation plant feed and conveyed to a 375t HMS feed bin ahead of two 150 HMS modules. Milled 270D ferrosilicon at a slurry density of 2.6 g/cc and HMS feed are pumped to three 420mm diameter cyclones. Heavy mineral concentrates, approximately 1 % of the plant headfeed, are pneumatically transported to the Recovery plant for final diamond recovery using wet high intensity magnetic separators and high intensity (attrition) milling prior to three stages of x-ray recovery. At full production, Ekati will produce approximately 2 kg/day of diamonds.This paper details the later commissioning phase and the first three months Oof operational activities during the build up to full production at the Ekati processing plant."

Most Peirce-Smith converters inject air through tuyeres, with nitrogen representing the majority of gas passing through the process. The nitrogen controls the temperature of the vessel by carrying away heat from the reactions, both globally and locally at the tuyere tip. However, nitrogen adds energy to the bath and contributes to splashing and limits the blowing rate. High oxygen smelting has made streams of gas containing high concentrations of sulphur dioxide commonplace, which can be used to substitute SO2 for nitrogen and drastically changes Peirce- Smith converting (and all other smelting/converting processes as well). Less SO2 is required to carry away the same quantity of heat, which allows higher concentrations of oxygen and leads to the possibility of increased production. The paper investigates this substitution, its impact on converter productivity, and on the remainder of the plant. 181

The effort described by the report covers the period from 31 January 1977 to 11 November 1977 and accomplished the following tasks: ? Data accumulation, mainly from visits to the major manufacturers and mine sites. ? Hazard analysis of blast-hole drill, mining shovel, and dragline. ? Recommended design concepts for automatic fire control systems for each of these vehicles. ? Detail system designs for each of these vehicles. ? Procurement of prototype systems for the blast-hole drill and mining shovel. ? Installation of the prototype systems on machines at a surface mine and demonstra¬tion of performance by fire tests on the machines.

Failure of rock materials is a process of crack propagation. Crack initiation takes place when the crack tip stress intensity K reaches a critical value called fracture toughness, K1C. The rock fracture toughness is known to be affected by the surrounding environment such as temperature, confining pressure and humidity. In order to examine the effect of humidity, a series of semi-circular bend tests were performed under various water vapour pressures in a rock material that is known to be anisotropic. Water vapour promotes stress corrosion of rock and therefore the fracture toughness was found to have a decreasing trend with increasing water vapour pressure. The rate of decreasing the fracture toughness depends on the microcrack density that promotes the migration of water vapour into the rock. Also in an anisotropic rock, the fracture toughness depends on the direction of crack in relation to the anisotropy of the rock material.

"INTRODUCTION The mines in the eastern part of the now active region of the Tri-State zinc district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma have unusually acid water, which during periods of moderate or no rainfall is used in the mills to replace losses from evaporation, seepage, and tailings disposal. Its use has caused difficulties by corrosion of equipment and by interference with flotation.The growing importance of flotation, which requires good water, and the increasing troubles caused by the corrosion of the milling equipment have prompted the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., to investigate the action of the waters on flotation and to undertake to develop means of obviating their harmful effects.The work was under the immediate direction of W. This water and its dissolved gases exert a solvent action on many minerals, the extent of which depends upon the nature of the associated minerals.The iron sulphides are the chief sources of the 'trouble with sulphates and sulphuric acid because they oxidize so freely and contain more sulphur than is required to satisfy the iron when ferrous sulphate is formed. Keywords: Magnesium, pyrometallurgy, Mintek Samples of crude magnesium produced by the Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process were refined in two stages. The first stage consisted of co-melting of batches of the crude metal and MgCl2-KCl flux (cleaning), followed by stirring at 30 rpm for 30 minutes and settling of the sludge (mixture of molten salt and solid impurities) from the magnesium melt. The operating temperature was 680?730°C. Most of the contained calcium and significant proportions of iron and silicon were transferred into the sludge phase, which left a metal containing, on average, 950 ppm Si, 470 ppm Fe, and 230 ppm Ca. In the second stage, small-scale refining tests were conducted on cleaned samples from the first stage, as well as on crude magnesium. FeCl3 was used as the refining agent. These tests were carried out at 715?760°C with various amounts of the refining agent. The refined metal was suitable for the production of various magnesium alloys, particularly AZ91D.

The mining community is geographically remote and widely dispersed. There is a growing requirement for formalized professional development of members by professional associations, and increasing recognition of the advantages of continuing education and training by both individuals and corporations. Working against these trends are the increasing expense and time commitments required for attendance at conventional courses and workshops. The result is a perceived need for a readily accessible source of continuing education and technical reference on the Internet. The design constraints for an Internet model for professional development include: ? browser compatibility, with any time, any place, any pace accessibility; ? a content presentation model with low bandwidth requirements, appropriate interactivity for examples, tools and reviews, and viewer performance monitoring capabilities; ? formal accreditation of content, presentation and process so that viewer achievements may be formalized in terms of widely recognized Continuing Education Units; ? availability of tools for conversion of source material to the presentation format with minimal effort. A model that meets the design constraints is presented and illustrated by examples from an existing Internet site for continuing education in mining.

Sufficient time has elapsed since the enactment of the amendments to the mining legislation in 1981 to enable an examination to be made of the way in which the licensing system operates in practice. One of the most important decisions in resource management in New Zealand is whether or not rights of access to the resource should be conferred by the Crown upon an appropriate private sector participant. The licensing system is the means for allocating these rights of access. The manner in which the licensing system is administered, therefore, is crucial to natural resource management in New Zealand. What is the mining licensing system in New Zealand designed to achieve? This simple question admits of no easy answer. Is it the identification and development of the mineral resources of New Zealand? Are these objectives tempered by issues of resource conservation and environmental protection? Is a balance to be achieved among these competing factors? Does the legislation contain any priorities? Does the system respond in an ad hoc manner to particular facts and circumstances or does it operate within a more predictable framework? To what extent are decisions made on access to minerals with reference to the development or conservation of other resources? These questions may be summarised in the title to this paper which poses the question whether mining licences are instruments for resource management.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a Fortran IV computer program for the structural analysis of (1) protective canopies used in underground mines to protect equipment operators from roof falls and (2) rollover protective structures (ROPS) used in surface mines to protect equipment operators during vehicle overturn accidents. The program, entitled PLASTIC CANOPY, permits rapid and inexpensive calculation of the ultimate strength and deformation characteristics of a canopy for a variety of static loading conditions. The structure is modeled as a series of interconnected beam and/or plate elements. Stresses in, and displacements of, each structural element are computed and printed out at the yield strength of the canopy, at several intermediate load levels between the yield and ultimate strength of the canopy, and at the ultimate strength of the canopy. Other features of the program include prediction of buckling of a beam member under combined axial compression loading and bending, plotting of the input geometry of the structure, and plotting of the deformed shape of the loaded structure. Program description, input instructions, program listing, and four example problems are included.

Recent mapping at the Kelian epithermal gold deposit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia has delineated intrusive and extrusive-phreatomagmatic breccias, their magmatic roots, and late-stage endogenous domes of a maar-diatreme complex. The Kelian epithermal system is characterised by a wide variety of mineralised and unmineralised breccias, which include tectonic, hydrothermal, phreatic and phreatomagmatic varieties. Phreatomagmatic breccias and associated igneous rocks post-date early stage alteration and mineralisation, and pre-date main stage precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study emphasises the spatial, temporal and genetic links that have been drawn between diatremes and both epithermal and porphyry systems in volcano-plutonic arcs.
