"The settlements between mines and smelters are based on the mass of metal contained in concentrate lots. The mass of contained metal is a function of the wet mass of a lot, and its moisture content and metal grade while the variance of the mass of contained metal is a function of the same variables and their variances. Uncertainties in the measurement procedure applied to estimate each variable are quantified in terms of precision and bias. The absence of bias and an acceptable degree of precision are the keys to effective risk analysis and loss control.ISO Technical Committee 183-Copper, Lead and Zinc Sulfide Concentrates, has developed standard methods for sampling and weighing, estimating precision and testing for bias, the determination of mass loss on drying, the calculation of the mass of contained metal and its variance, and various analytical methods for major and minor metals. The variance for wet mass is calculated from the precision of the scale while the total variances of moisture and grade are estimated from pairs of interpenetrating primary samples. The variance of contained metal can be calculated either from mine data or from smelter data but the risk associated with the settlement is largely determined by the absence or presence of bias and the variance of differences between exchange assays.ISO/TC 183 does not deal with precision and bias for exchange assays but is developing guidelines to determine realistic splitting limits. Given that the exchange of assays between mines and smelters accounts for a large part of the risk associated with the settlement, precision and bias for exchange assays should be measured and monitored. The need for umpire services can be reduced by applying statistical quality control (SQC).Calibrating static scales, moisture balances and analytical balances, bias testing of sampling methods and sample preparation procedures, estimating the variance of a single variable or the variance of a function that a set of variables defines, and monitoring precision and bias for exchange assays, are the quintessence of metrology, the science of measurement, when applied in mining and metallurgy."

Today?s modern mining operations have literally dozens of applications and systems generating data whose information very often, are not crossed or centralized for operational decisions. In remote locations, the information and situation awareness is typically limited to the location itself. In addition, access to that information is limited to a small, select group of personnel that have received training on how to interpret the results. When the situation affects another area of the mine then information is relayed to the applicable areas involved. Few workers have time to analyze the situation thoroughly, to see how it affects the mines symbiotic relationship within all areas of production. If the capability to correlate and measure events and situations that affect your overall key performance indicators are not in place, the opportunity to identify process improvement becomes more difficult.

Grade control in open pit mining requires the specification of dig limits that account for mineral grades, economic costs, and selectivity of mining equipment. Visual identification of ore rock types is ideal, but this is not always possible in lower grade disseminated deposits where ore/waste contacts are not visually discernible. In this case, conventional grade control practice consists of a two-step procedure (1) create a map of mineral grades at some selective mining unit scale, and (2) determine practical ore-waste boundaries or dig limits on the basis of the gridded block grades or assay information. This procedure is laborious, depends on a subjective assessment of where the boundary should be, and may be economically sub-optimal. We pose the determination of dig limits as an optimization problem and solve that problem with the technique of simulated annealing. Simulated annealing has the unique advantage of being able to combine multiple non-linear constraints into a single objective function. We use maximum profitability and the ability of the equipment to mine the proposed dig limits as constraints in the determination of optimal dig limits. We require a map of expected profit for eah block. Geostatistical techniques are recommended, for mapping expected profit but not necessary. Geostatistics will provide a quantification of the uncertainty in the grades within rock types using all available blasthole samples and exploration drilling. Some variant of L-optimal estimation or kriging can be used to determine the block-by-block classification that is economically optimum. We also need the expected profit for each block. It is unrealistic to assume free selection, that is, each block cannot be extracted independently of its neighbors. The optimal balance of ''accepting dilution'' and ''wasting ore'' is achieved to maximize profit subject to equipment constraints.

Keywords: Recycling, Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite, Ionic Liquids, BMIC Recycling of aluminum metal matrix composites (MMC) via electrolysis in ionic liquids at near room temperature was investigated. The electrolytic melt comprised of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) and anhydrous AlCl3. Impure aluminum composite (Duralcan MMC Al-380, 20 vol % SiC) was electrochemically dissolved at the anode and pure aluminum (>98%) was deposited on a copper cathode. The deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractrometer, and mass spectrometer. The influence of various process parameters such as concentration of electrolyte, and applied cell voltage on the recycling process was studied. The recycling process yielded current densities in the range of 200-500 A/m2, and cathode current efficiency of about 85%. The results indicated that impurities such as Cu, Si, Ni, Fe, Mg, Mn, and SiC particles were removed as anode residue. Energy consumption of about 3.7-6.3 kWh/kg-Al was obtained at a cell voltage of 1.0-2.0 V and cell temperature of 100 ± 5°C. Low energy consumption and no emission of pollutants are the two main advantages of this process compared to present recycling processes.

US 4,190,436 - In the cyanide leaching of gold ore in tailing or ore dump piles, or gold ore in vats or on pads, the ore is agitated and oxygenated by introducing timed bursts of air, along with cyanide in a cyclic or regulated manner. The leach liquor is drained from the material by providing a continuous flow of air. Fines are homogenously mixed, thereby reducing channelling In the ore bed. This paper describes the various factors that contribute to the maximum design pressures acting on box fronts and how these factors influence the mass and economy of box front steelwork. The influence of material density, rock size and moisture content on the incidence of hang ups and mud rushes in the rock pass is also highlighted. The loads acting on any box front are a function of several different parameters. These include natural, operational and excavational parameters. A case study analysis was carried out using UG2 ore and a typical box front structure to demonstrate the relationship between the mass of the box front and the material pressures resulting from variations in the above parameters. Based on the results of this case study, the required design mass of a side mounted box front for a rock pass containing platinumUG2 increases in (close to) linear proportion to % overbreak and is also linearly proportional to the pressure on the face of the box front beyond saturated conditions. The mass of the box front structure also doubles with a 100%increase in over-break which emphasises that a box hole excavation that is as neat as possible will yield a lighter and more econimical box front structure.

"Reagents are an important cost-factor in the flotation of minerals. The mechanism of collectors and frothers has been studied extensively, but on depressants – probably the biggest cost-factor in the reagent suite – very little is actually known. Theories are frequently faced with the bare facts, pointing in another direction. Fundamental research is complicated by the fact that the amount of possible interactions in the flotation cell is almost unlimited and makes “change-one-parameter-at-a-time” experiments questionable and at least difficult to interpret. Also, the adsorption of depressants on the ore is very strong and desorption merely impossible. Detection methods therefore tend to be indirect and – therefore - non-specific about the location of the depressant on the ore.Depressants are supposed to adsorb selectively on gangue minerals; not on the valuable minerals in the froth. In order to be able to develop better and ‘’smarter’’ depressants, an analytical method is therefore required that will enable to detect which (=qualitatively) depressant, in which concentration (=quantitatively) sits where exactly (= selectively) on the mineral surface. (Answering the question: ‘’ Which minerals is located direct under the depressant?’’)And also: does the depressant compete with other reagents for that location? (like collectors) This analytical method is under development. The actual status of the method is promising and the results will be shown."

Garden Well is a shear-hosted Archaean orogenic gold deposit located 100 km north of Laverton, Western Australia. The Garden Well processing plant is designed for a nominal 491 t/h milling rate and annual capacity of 4 Mt. The plant has three key innovations:1. a scrubbing circuit, expected to reduce grinding power consumption by up to 20 per cent2. a secondary cycloning/gravity circuit, providing a second opportunity for gravity gold recovery (additionally, the circuit effectively increases the leach residence time of the coarse gold bearing fraction of the leach feed by approximately 60 per cent, without any additional tankage)3. the use of mid-stream oxygenation to enhance gold recovery.The Garden Well deposit is free-milling with overall laboratory gravity/leach gold recoveries exceeding 95 per cent at a P80 grind size of 150 ¦m. Three mineralogical domains have been identified: oxide, transition and fresh, with the fresh domain having subdomains of fresh ultramafic and fresh shale. There is a high component of gravity recoverable gold in all three domains.This paper will discuss these innovations and the design challenges and the risk mitigation strategies that were adopted to ameliorate the prototyping risk. The effect of carbon material properties on the rate of MnO reduction from ferromanganese slag by solid graphite was investigated. A sessile drop technique was used to study the reduction rate of a synthetic slag containing 45 wt% MnO at 1500 and 1600 ºC. Different types of graphite substrates were used and the con-tact angle between slag droplets and substrate were measured in-situ. Moreover, the slag droplet volume during the interaction with the graphite substrates was calculated and normalised. The mathematical relationship between the slag density during the reduction and the normalised slag droplet volumes during the reduction were derived and the MnO reduction curves were then calculated. A method for measuring the slag reactivity of solid carbon was defined and used to qualify the propensity of the different graphites to react with the liquid slag. Some supplementary studies such as manganese evaporation measurement and EPMA analysis for determining the extent of MnO reduction were also carried out. It was observed that there is nota significant difference in the wetting angle of the graphite substrates by the slag, and the wetting is not changed within the temperature range of 1500-1600ºC. However, the changes in the contact angle during the slag reduction at 1600ºC are more than at 1500ºC. The kinetics of MnO reduction is dependent on the type of graphite and it is more dependent on the graphite properties at lower temperatures. On the other hand, the dominant properties of graphite on the reduction rate vary with temperature. A multivariate analysis on the graphite properties and the parameters related to the slag reactivity indicated that the kinetics of MnO reduction is mainly dependent on the temperature, and then on the graphite properties. It was also found that at1500 ºC the surface area and the CO2 reactivity are the most important graphite properties for the slag reduction, suggesting that the reactivity of carbon is rate controlling at 1500 ºC. However, the porosity related parameters are the most important graphite properties at 1600 ºC, suggesting that CO gas desorption is rate controlling at high temperatures.

Leaching studies were carried out for the recovery/ recycling of metals from PCBs containing 17.05% Cu, 0.74% Ni, 1.74% Fe, 4.35% Pb and 8.32% Sn using various acids such as H2SO4, HCl and HNO3. While sulfuric acid was not a suitable leachant for the dissolution of metals from PCBs, hydrochloric acid selectively dissolved tin. The nitric acid was found to be effective lixiviant with the recovery of 99.99% Cu, Fe, Ni and 36.7% Pb in 6M HNO3 at S/L ratio of 100 g/L and 90oC. The kinetic studies carried out with 2M and 4M HNO3 at 90oC showed ?Ash diffusion control dense constant size-spherical particles? model.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research on dust explosions by studying post-explosion dust samples. The samples were collected after full-scale explosions at the PRL Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM), and after laboratory explosions in the PRL 20-L chamber and the Fike I m3 chamber. The dusts studied included both high- and low-volatile bituminous coals. Low temperature ashing for 24 h at 515 °C was used to measure the incombustible content of the dust before and after the explosions. The data showed that the post-explosion incombustible content was always as high as, or higher than the initial incombustible content. The MSHA alcohol coking test was used to determine the amount of coked dust in the post-explosion samples. The results showed that almost all coal dust that was suspended within the explosion flame produced significant amounts of coke. Measurements of floor dust concentrations after LLEM explosions were compared with the initial dust loadings to determine the transport distance of dust during an explosion. All these data will be useful in future forensic investigations of accidental dust explosions in coal mines, or elsewhere.

The Late Miocene San Cristobal Ag-Zn-Pb deposit represents syngenetic and epigenetic mineralization with low- and high-sulfidation characteristics. Geology is characterized by barren dacitic ring fracture domes, mineralized resurgent rhyodacite domes, strongly altered and mineralized tuffaceous lacustrine sedimentary rocks, and an extensive crystal-lithic tuff debris apron. The ore body is hosted by intra-cauldron sedimentary rocks and breccias. Fluid inclusions suggest that silver, lead, and zinc were transported as chloride complexes and precipitated by cooling in veins from <5 wt. % NaCl eq. fluids at 170°-215° C. Silver associated with resurgent rhyodacite was transported as a chloride complex and precipitated by increased H2S activity or increased fluid pH.

In 2002, many in the mining industry — companies, academia and government — realized that the industry would soon be facing a serious shortfall in salaried and hourly employees. Depending on whose numbers are to be believed, 20 percent to 50 percent of current mining professionals are expected to retire within five to 10 years. And there are not enough students currently enrolled in mineral-related programs to the fill the need. Part of the impending shortage in professionals was brought on by the industry’s negative image, which discouraged students from enrolling in mining engineering programs. Another part was that the industry was in the doldrums and was seen by the public as a dying industry.

Coal mining using longwall methods of mining can lead to intense disturbances of undermined roof strata. The disturbances may extend beyond the extraction area and the resulted rock mass deformations will appear differentiated. In the case of stiff and undermined roof strata, the energy stored in these rock masses may be frequently dissipated in the form of high-energy seismic tremors. Such events can occur if these strata should fail or „free themselves” either from the constrainment of rock environment or from adjacent strata. It has also been found that the amount of the stored energy closely depends on the size and/or slenderness of these strata. Thus, it would be possible to apply specific preventive measures to reduce the energy of mining – induced seismic tremors. The methods are based on artificial disintegration of the structure of energy – storing strata. One of the most efficient methods is a method of directional hydraulic fracturing, which is regarded as an alternative solution from the traditional blasting and hydraulic methods.

Introduction Gold Quarry is one of the largest gold deposits in Nevada, located along the Carlin Trend, approximately seven miles north of Carlin, NV. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, as of December 31, 2005, Gold Quarry had produced over 13 million ounces of gold. Multiple simulations were constructed for gold and metallurgical variables using the Stepwise Conditional Transformation method. Analyses of these simulations have been used for a variety of purposes, including an assessment of uncertainty with various ore types. This assessment provides insight for improved modeling and reconciliation. Geological Framework Gold Quarry is a large, low-grade disseminated gold deposit hosted in Silurian-Devonian aged sediments at the Chukar/Alunite-Good Hope fault intersection. Gold bearing hydrothermal fluids appear to have migrated upwards along the Chukar/Alunite and Deep Sulfide Feeder faults and then moved outward along favorable stratigraphic horizons and structural intersections.

"Abstract Pile foundations are often used for important structures, and thus, reliability evaluation is an important aspect of the design. Reliability methods have become increasingly important as decision support tools in different areas. The main benefit of reliability analysis is that it provides quantitative information about the parameters (uncertainties) that most significantly influence the behaviour under study. In particular, the design of pile foundations still involves many limitations and uncertainties, particularly when there is not enough investment in soil characterisation and/or pile load tests. In addition to the uncertainties associated with soil characterisation, physical, statistical, spatial and human uncertainties exist. In this subject, the primary purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the application of reliability methods to geotechnical pile design (axial load). It also presents a simple and practical approach to performing it using Monte Carlo Simulations, intending to provide knowledge for code harmonisation and encouraging the development of such methodologies in geotechnical practice. Sensitivity analyses are shown to understand the influence of each uncertainty type coming from different sources. An application example indicates, corroborating other studies, that the model error is the most influent uncertainty. As such, when using the different models (SPT-, CPT- and PMT-based) for bearing capacity, the results emphasise the need for a well-defined and wellcharacterised resistance model, also these results allow the engineer to understand how important the load tests can be to achieve reliable results and economic designs.1 IntroductionUnlike the approach to reliability evaluation used in structural engineering, the traditional procedure used in geotechnical designs addresses uncertainties through high global or partial safety factors (SF), mostly based on past experience. However, this approach to addressing uncertainties does not provide a rational basis for understanding their influence on design.Furthermore, the new regulation codes and social concerns, such as the sustainability or the economy, are imposing geotechnical engineers to increase their ability to deal with uncertainty in a direct and more rational way. Designs should be economic, sustainable and reliable at the same time. Concerning the reliability part of design, different approaches can be done, but the most important thing to keep in mind is the simplicity and efficiency of the tools and applied methods."

For some time spirals have been the process equipment chosen to recover metal in the size range 0.15 to 3mm from ferrochrome and silico/ferro manganese slags. Recoveries of metal obtained using spirals are usually about 70%. Spirals are also difficult to control. By combining a novel gate on the Apic pneumatic fines jig with the recently developed Apic classifier, metal recoveries of 76% and grades of over 90% have been obtained for FeCr and SiMn slags in the size range 0.15 to 3 mm. The paper compares classifier operating performance and costs with those spirals for FeCr and SiMn metal recovery from slags. The classifier technology can also be applied to chromite and iron ores and coal fines.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is planning to replace 5 miles of pipeline under San Francisco Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM and will be the first TBM-driven tunnel under the Bay. The alignment passes under environmentally sensitive habitats, through interbedded layers of sands and clays, and through a buried bedrock ridge. This paper discusses the geotechnical characterization and anticipated tunneling conditions and presents the analysis of various construction methods that resulted in the selection of an EPB TBM. Considerations related to tunneling with an EPB TBM are described in detail, including ground conditioners, TBM cutterhead wear, muck control, and squeezing ground.
