King and Schepman have presented an excellent paper which outlines the general practice in the design of thickener mechanisms. Lifting devices, controls, special applications and underflow pumping arrangements have been reviewed in detail. Pumping arrangements were illustrated which eliminate the need for an expensive tunnel beneath the thickener floor. Most of those illustrated have the common feature of a relatively long underflow suction line extending from the hopper floor to the pump located on the bridge at the periphery of the tank. The authors limit these arrangements to comparatively dilute or thin slurrys. It is implied that dense and coarse concentrates, which are difficult to pump, cannot be handled unless a tunnel is constructed. Fig. 1 shows an underflow pump arrangement which negates the need for a tunnel but which permits the operator to convey a heavy dense slurry. The pump is mounted directly on the fixed hoist platform and the impeller is located at the base of the steel center column. Priming water is not needed. The column

Established and emerging mining companies face significant challenges in managing their operations and projects. Outcomes often do not meet the expectations of all the stakeholders of particular developments. This paper reviews typical management practises used by mining companies to undertake mining projects and improve their operations. A simple application of the House of Quality (HOQ) tool used in the Quality Functional Deployment (QFD) management approach is presented. It is shown that a QFDMMPtg approach could lead to innovation in mining processing plant development practice.

El presente trabajo evalúa la adición del oxígeno puro al circuito de cianuración, con la finalidad de incrementar el porcentaje de recuperación de oro y plata, así como su efecto sobre el consumo de cianuro de sodio. En ese sentido, la mayoría de las plantas mantienen un alto nivel de concentración de cianuro, en lugar de un alto nivel de oxígeno disuelto en la solución. Como consecuencia de ello , operan a niveles de cianuro de modo que la disolución del oro depende del nivel de oxigeno disuelto. Por ello, es más fácil mantener un nivel alto de cianuro, que un nivel alto de oxígeno disuelto en la solución, principalmente si se utiliza aire en lugar de oxígeno.

At the International Society ofExplosives Engineers Annual Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee in February 1995, a Seismograph Standards Committee was established. The purpose of this wmmittee was to develop objective performance specifications for vibration measurement instrumentation and field use practices. It was also understood that due to geology, temperature, and moisture in the soils, it is not possible to design and build an instrument to give ‘results which are absolutely comparable for ground vibration. It was, however, considered essential to standardize instrumentation by which vibration can be measured under closely defined conditions so that results obtained by users of seismographs are always the same ,&thin stated tolerances.

For the past several years, copper producers have faced a tough business climate. Nagging low prices forced many them to reduce their production and make other drastic cutbacks just to breakeven. And sometimes even that did not work. But, like other downturns in the industry, this latest dismal copper market allowed technology to make further inroads into mining and processing operations. Now that the copper market appears to be making a turn for the better, those years spent investing in technology by equipment manufacturers and forward-thinking mining companies should begin paying off.

The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selectivity was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of a large amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence, selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords: sulphide ores, flotation, flotation depressant, mineralogy.

In 2009, the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) became aware that Canadian securities regulators were amending the contents of National Instrument 43-101. NI 43-101 is a set of regulations which establish how ore resources and reserves are presented to the investing public. The documents produced under NI 43-101 are central to the ability of many companies to raise financing for their projects. With the increase of metallurgical complexity, and decrease of head grades encountered in new deposits, the role of the Qualified Person (QP) in determining process performance has become increasingly critical in determining the classification category of resources and reserves. Given the challenges confronted by those involved in defining the concentration and extraction of minerals and metals, there is a need to provide support to these QPs. To address these concerns, the CMP established a sub-committee in 2010 to create a set of guideline documents to assist the QP involved in process matters as to what should be included at the various levels of study supporting the establishment of resources and reserves in NI 43- 101. The results of the sub-committee work are presented and the considerations in the writing of the documents are discussed.

CSIRO Mineral has recently developed a new electron microprobe based system for characterizing zircon grains from heavy minerals sand deposits. The system acquires cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra, X-ray and backscattered electron (BSE) signals in parallel. By scanning over a specified target area, CL wavelength and X-ray element distribution maps of polished zircon grains can be acquired. Post-inspection of the combined dataset using in-house developed software enables correlations between chemistry and structure to be investigated. The new method offers significant benefits over traditional CL and BSE techniques in that direct comparison with the elemental concentrations over the same region is now achievable. By combining the electron microprobe results with data for the same mapped region obtained via a nuclear microprobe, significantly better detection limits (~ 1ppb) for elements with atomic numbers greater than iron are possible. The ability to measure spatially related analytical data and then investigate the correlation of the CL spectra with chemical data is an important advancement in the characterization of zircons. High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators' intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

The reducibility of three different manganese ores with coke was studied. The three ores were reduced to different extents under the same experimental conditions. The investigations showed that in the temperature range of 900-1000 ×C, Fe2O3 in the ore was reduced to metallic iron. MnO2 was reduced to Mn3O4 in all cases except one in which it was reduced to Mn2O3. The kinetics of reduction was controlled by different mechanisms in the different ores. Temperature had a significant influence on the reducibility of the ores.

"The conversion of a concentrator from one grinding media type to another is a major undertaking in terms of both financial and technical risk. So, a strategy of completing sufficient laboratory and field tests to mitigate this risk, and give the operation confidence that advancing to plant trial will give a high probability for success.The objectives of this paper are twofold: to provide the reader with a strategy for mitigating risk prior to undertaking a plant trial; and to provide a statistical basis for analysing plant trial data. That is, when employing an electrochemically inert grinding media in the primary grinding circuit it is possible to change the pulp chemistry of the system and improve the metallurgical response of the ore.This paper tracks the changes in pulp chemistry and metallurgical performance of Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation’s silver/lead/zinc concentrator as the primary ball mill was converted from forged steel grinding media to high chrome grinding media. The changed in metallurgical performance are correlated to the shift in pulp chemistry.INTRODUCTIONTheoryBruckard et al (2011) recently published an article describe the effect of the grinding environment on the flotation of copper sulphides. While this paper confined its discussion to copper sulphides the arguments presented apply equally to other sulphide mineral systems. Broadly, these studies indicate that most sulphide minerals are more noble than the grinding media used during comminution. Therefore, the sulphide minerals are cathodic with respect to the forged steel grinding media, and the following reactions apply:Cathode (sulphide mineral): ½O2 + H2O + 2e- ? 2OH- (1)Anode (grinding media): Fe ? Fe2+ + 2e- (2)A galvanic couple between the grinding media and the sulphide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the forged steel media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulphide minerals thereby affecting their floatability (Johnson, 2002).The application of more electrochemically inert grinding media to “real” ore systems at an industrial level to improve metallurgical performance has not gained universal acceptance. The aim of this paper is to provide a protocol for conducting laboratory and plant test work that clearly demonstrate that metallurgical benefits are not only possible, but measureable, by way of example. "Over recent years a number of techniques have been developed as part of the AMIRA1 P9 project to represent mathematically or measure directly sub-processes occurring in flotation cells. These include the determination of:•,?a machine parameter (bubble surface area flux, Sb);•,?a froth parameter (froth recovery, Rf );•,?entrainment and drainage parameters (???and d); and•,?an ore floatability parameter (Pi).These flotation parameters allow the plant engineer to develop a model of the flotation circuit that can be used as a powerful tool to diagnose the performance of that circuit. The recently developed JKSimFloat V6 flotation simulator uses these parameters to predict the flotation circuit performance that would arise from changes in operating conditions and circuit configuration.This new flotation technology was applied to the Placer Kanowna Belle Gold Mine in Western Australia. A series of plant surveys, cell characterisation measurements and laboratory batch tests were conducted to determine the flotation circuit model parameters to be used within the JKSimFloat V6 simulatorA thorough flotation circuit analysis was then performed at Kanowna Belle using JKSimFloat V6. The recommendations that were provided by this circuit analysis have resulted in large improvements in the flotation performance at Kanowna Belle. These include a 1.3% increase in flotation gold recovery and a substantial decrease in operating costs. The analysis is still ongoing, however, the benefits already obtained from applying this technology have resulted in a US$1.3 million a year improvement to the mine."

Application of digital image analysis technique for assessment of blast fragmentation is gaining grounds in India, very recently. Central Mining Research Institute, India made its maiden attempt to optimize blast design based on fragmentation assessment of one of the biggest opencast mines of Singareni Collieries Company Limited, India. Indigenously developed photoanalysis software called ‘FRAGALYST’ was used for measurement of blast fragmentation A series of trial blasts were carried out in overburden benches with ongoing blast parameters and pictures of muck pile were taken by video camera for image analysis. Cycle time study of loaders and dumpers was done to determine machinery performance for each and every blast. Optimization of pre-blast parameters like specific charge, specific drilling and post-blast results like shovel cycle time and dumper cycle time, was done to determine optimum range of fragmentation. Interpreting the mean fragment size (K50) obtained by image analysis the blast design parameters were modified.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Northwest Barricade LLC (NWB) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel fire blocking gel for use in underground coal mines to extinguish or to retard the growth of a coal fire. The gel agent was subjected to controlled laboratory testing to assess its ability to delay coal ignition. It was then evaluated to determine if manual fire hose application could be used to apply the agent to mine roofs and ribs to provide a safe egress for mine rescue teams from a fire area. The gel agent was also evaluated in a water sprinkler system to determine its potential for use in conveyor belt fire suppression systems. The agent was then tested in live-fire exercises to examine its effectiveness in retarding and extinguishing a deep-seated coal fire and wood fire. Lastly, the ability of a Mine Rescue Team to quickly and safely apply the gel agent to a mine entry during a simulated mine fire exercise was determined.

"Increasing demand for timely and accurate information about flotation plant performance requires metal accountants to increase the scope and reporting frequency of plant production. This trend has brought in-process inventory estimation at the forefront of metal accounting issues. Such significant in-process inventories can be locked in diverse process equipment (bins, holding tanks, flotation cells, thickeners, pipeline, etc.) or in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, tailings, etc.). Practice has shown that boldly ignoring these in-process inventories or the errors associated with their estimation lead to unreliable metal balances thereby creating confusion in plant production planning and operational performance assessment. To this extent, the characteristics (physical bounds, spatial heterogeneity and residence time) as well as the available measurements (volume, density, humidity, mass, composition, etc.) of each unit/section found in a generic flotation plant are jointly reviewed with respect to the particular metal accounting issues they present. The daily and monthly metal accounting tasks are then reviewed together with possible methods for obtaining reliable inventory estimates including different procedures for end-of month reconciliation.INTRODUCTION Most of the cost reduction initiatives of the mining industry aim at improving capital efficiency and asset utilization. Among the possible paths through which these goals can be achieved are mine-to-metal optimization, real-time plantwide process control (Hodouin, 2011) and knowledge sharing databases (Bascur & Linares, 2006). However, the successful implementation and subsequent monitoring will ineluctably results in an increased demand for timely and accurate information. This more than often requires metal accountants to increase the scope and reporting frequency of plant metal production. A striking example of such scope expansion is the Minas-Rio iron ore project in Brazil (Anglo American, 2013) having a pipeline route of 525 km between the concentrator and the concentrate shipping area. Several other mining companies have also set an increased frequency for their key performance indicators thereby shrinking the metal accounting period from monthly to weekly and daily. Those concurrent trends have brought in-process inventory estimation at the forefront of metal accounting issues. Indeed, as illustrated in Figure 1, improving trading reactivity requires improvements in production planning which strongly impacts the requirements for reliable metallurgical accounting. Furthermore, practice has shown that boldly ignoring significant in-process inventories or the errors associated with their estimation can lead to unreliable metal balances. In other words, since metal balances are the cornerstones of metal accounting, some of the risks associated with important business decisions are linked to errors associated with in-process inventory measurements."

Nanocrystalline CdS:In thin films with particle size in the range (3-36 nm) were produced by the spray pyrolysis technique on glass substrates. The films were characterized by investigating their X-ray diffractograms (XRD), scanning electron microscope images (SEM), transmittance curves and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The size of the nanocrystallites was estimated from XRD difractograms and then from the hyperbolic band model and the bandgap energies of the nano- particles, which were calculated from the positions of the minima in the first derivative curve of the absorbance. Fine-structured PL spectra confirmed the nanocrystalline nature of the films.

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk.

"The froth flotation process is not well understood. Both flotation models, and the parameters used to describe the stream flows are not well defined. They in fact vary considerably in different applications. This creates difficulties is designing a simulation program suitable for use by plant personnel, consultants, and researchers. In addition to simulation, an effective simulation program can be expected to provide a range of other services.This paper shows how a process circuit simulator can be designed with sufficient flexibility to satisfy these needs, and discusses some of the additional services.OVERVIEWThe development of a simulation program for froth flotation circuits faces several challenges as flotation models and the associated stream descriptions are not well defined. There is little agreement on the best form for a flotation model, or on how the plant streams should be defined.In addition to simulation, a flotation simulator is generally expected to provide other services such as data input, data reconciliation, model fitting, and accuracy estimation. Additional services may also be needed beyond what might initially be envisaged. A summary of some of these possibilities is included.To apply simulation to a flotation circuit it is necessary to develop a flotation cell model, for instance based on the general outline given in the appendices. Experimental data, usually from the plant, is needed to determine cell model parameters. This is generally done by first undertaking data reconciliation to determine if mass flow constraints are sufficiently closely satisfied. At the same time the data is inspected for outliers that might bias subsequent calculations. Next the data is fitted to a model to back calculate ore characteristics. If there is sufficient agreement between the fitted model and the data, the model can then used to make predictions of the effect of changes to the plant. The changes, that the simulation shows are beneficial, can be applied to improve plant performance"
