The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

"Energy balance modeling has recently been shown to be a competent tool in the estimation of SAG mill discharge rheology. Work performed by van Drunick and Moys (2001) validated the ability of an energybalance filter to estimate the slurry density from an operating SAG mill. The importance of rheological data is highlighted by several authors who show the effects on load behaviour and thus mill performance. Energy balance models were developed to account for the dynamic energies in the mill discharge sump. The models then made it possible to infer the mill discharge density. A sampling campaign was performed and the errors from the sump energy balance were within tolerable limits.Since the initial results were published, it has been decided to further develop the modeling techniques in order to focus on balancing the energies around the entire mill. The critical measurements for the energy balance will be the temperatures of all the streams entering and leaving the mill, including energy losses to the environment. Metso’s OCS© (Optimising Control System) currently controls the 3 SAG mills at Anglogold’s Mponeng Gold Plant (South Africa). The OCS has built-in Kalman filtering tools to effectively handle variances and noise in the models and the mill circuit data respectively. The new models are therefore constructed in the OCS platform, and will be run in parallel with Metso’s current modeling and filtering systems. The work is a collaborative effort between Anglogold, the University of the Witwatersrand and Metso. The benefits of energy modeling, compared to mass modeling, are that energy data are more accurately measurable than mass data. The inferred mill parameters can therefore be improved provided that a competent set of models is produced to process the (accurate) thermal measurements."

NINE-TENTHS of the total anthracite deposits of North America are in Pennsylvania. Corrosion of pumping equipment by acid mine waters has been experienced at tremendous cost by mining companies in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, for many years in many ways. The design and specifications of the large centrifugal pumps as provided in the proposed mine-drainage system (7-35, 45, 46, 48, 54, 64, 70, 71)° make it imperative that a metal or alloy be recommended that has the highest corrosion resistance and, at the same time, acceptable properties suitable for general workability (welding and machining). This report presents data on the corrosive and erosive effects of acid mine waters in the anthracite region on metals and alloys for pumping equipment and drainage facilities necessary to remove or control this water.

Water quality standards for some of the substances likely to be discharged to natural waters by the mining industry are discussed. After briefly examining how uses of water can be affected by discharges, standards for suspended solids and turbidity, pH, and toxic materials are considered. Heavy metals are examined in some detail because of recent public concern regarding their discharge. Caution is given in connection with their analysis at the very low concentrations required for management of natural waters. Finally, the issues of what constitutes a water right concentration compliance breach, and the appropriateness of biological monitoring as a condition on a water right are raised.

For the second time in four years, the coal industry was brought to the forefront of the nation’s consciousness in 2006, as two separate events unfolded which involved coal miners trapped underground. Unfortunately, the tragic results of the 2006 incidents were not the same as in 2002 when the trapped miners were all successfully rescued. In January, two different incidents, both in West Virginia, focused the public’s attention on the dangers that miners face on a daily basis. As a result of these unfortunate events new legislation requiring improvement in safety in underground mines passed both at the federal and state level. In 2006, a total of 47 miners died on the job, matching the total number that occurred in 1995, and more than double the 22 killed in 2005. Notwithstanding those tragic events, coal production in the United States reached another record level in 2006, ending the year at 1.05 Gt (1,161.4 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2006 was 27.1 Mt (29.9 million st) higher than the prior record set in 2005 of 1.03 Gt (1,131.5 million st). Although coal production rose in 2006, U.S. total coal consumption actually declined for the year. Coal consumption decreased in the electric power sector by 1.1 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly. Only the other industrial sector had higher coal consumption in 2006, increasing by 0.3 percent. (Note: All percentage change calculations are done at the short tons level.) U.S. coal exports declined slightly in 2006, while coal imports again reached a record level. The excess production over consumption allowed total coal stocks to increase significantly during the year, as electric generators rebuilt their stockpiles that had fallen substantially in 2005 because of missed shipments in the second half of that year.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District, is in the final phases of modernizing the locks and dams on the Monongahela River. One facet of this modernization is to replace the existing Locks 4 located on the Monongahela River approximately 40 river miles upstream from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The existing locks consist of a 56-foot x 720-foot main chamber and a riverside 56-foot x 360-foot auxiliary chamber built in the 1930s. Two new lock chambers, each 84-foot wide by 720-foot long, will be constructed at the location of existing Locks 4 and will be named Charleroi Locks. The purpose of the new project is to facilitate navigation on the lower Monongahela River. Pittsburgh is currently the second largest inland waterway port in the nation, and the new locks will be an important component of the navigational infrastructure. The existing lock walls are of mass concrete construction and are founded on wooden timber piles driven to rock through alluvial sands and gravels. The new lock walls were designed to be supported by approximately 300 reinforced concrete drilled shafts, varying in diameter from 4 to 6 feet. To handle axial loads, the drilled shafts were designed for end bearing, with some skin friction. The tips of the shafts will be founded within competent rock. Since the walls will undergo lateral loads, the drilled shaft design also had to consider this loading condition. Some of the drilled shafts will be installed within coffer boxes, which will incorporate a tremie concrete seal down to top of rock. Complicating the design even further was the fact that some portions of the new walls will be supported by shafts that extend some 9 feet above top of rock through alluvial soils, producing a cantilever effect. The first phase of the new lock construction was initiated in the summer of 2005 with a contract awarded to replace the river wall. This required shutting down the existing riverside lock chamber and diverting all river traffic to the longer existing land chamber. The foundation of the new river wall will use 144 drilled shafts. To optimize the design embedment of drilled shafts in rock for the river wall, an exploratory drilling program was conducted by the contractor in July and August, 2005. Based on the quality of the sedimentary bedrock, the shafts will be embedded in rock from 31 to 38 feet. To achieve adequate end bearing resistance, the tips of each shaft will extend through predominantly claystones into a more competent siltstone unit for a minimum embedment of one foot. The contractor also performed an exploratory pile driving program to aid in the construction of the drilled shaft casing and the cut off walls that will encapsulate the river wall. Two demonstration drilled shafts located outside the footprint of the new river wall, will be constructed prior to the drilling of any production shafts. The demonstration drilled shafts will verify that the contractor is able to meet the design criteria and quality requirements of the contract. The river wall contract is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed in 2010.

"Xanthate is a sulfide collector that has been widely used in flotation for almost a century. It is inexpensive, easy to synthesize and apply, and produces good metallurgy in the right applications. However, a major drawback of xanthate is that it decomposes easily and generates CS2 gas in transportation, storage and operation, which can be harmful to human health. Also, excessive xanthate in tailings pond leads to toxicity of the process water and potential damages to aqua-life systems. New regulations in Ontario require that the TWA (time-weighted-average) value of CS2 in the work place is below 1 ppm, which is 1/10 of the previous limit. The stringent regulation may eventually sweep other regions of Canada with the increased awareness of healthy working conditions and environment protection. Therefore, it becomes very important to find xanthate replacements which will be “green”, i.e., environmentally friendly.In this research work, a systematic procedure is used for collector evaluation using the Sudbury nickel sulfide ores from Vale’s Ontario operations, starting with the collector properties (MSDS) evaluation, followed by batch flotation tests, miniplant tests, plant trials and economic evaluation. It is found that the most promising xanthate replacement is dithiocarbamate.INTRODUCTIONSulfide mineral flotation has been practiced since the early 20th century. Its industrial importance is well recognized as mineral concentrates from flotation can be economically smelted and refined to provide primary metals. Collectors play a vital role in froth flotation. There are reagents possessing both a polar group that binds them to the mineral surface and a nonpolar group that is oriented away from the surface to attach air bubbles. The introduction of xanthate as a sulfide collector in 1925 was a remarkable development in froth flotation (Keller, 1925). It is low cost, easy to synthesize, water soluble, simple to control in application. Most importantly, it has strong capability and usually good selectivity for sulfide mineral flotation, which have been keeping its application prominent for almost a century."

As part of the City of Portland, Oregon?s East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project, nine separate 2,130 mm (84-inch) diameter reinforced concrete pipe microtunnel drives totaling approximately 2,380 m (7,808 ft) are being constructed to divert flows from several of the existing outfalls to the main tunnel. The drives were constructed in challenging ground conditions that include soft soils under the ground-water table, large amounts of wood and metal debris, and close proximity to sensitive structures. While all of the drives will be addressed, the focus of the paper will be on the 931 m (3,055 ft) continuous drive connecting Outfall 46, currently the longest microtunnel driven in North America.

MSHA has promulgated a rule to limit the exposure of underground metal/nonmetal miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). In May 2008, the final personal exposure limit will be lowered to 160 µg/m3 total carbon. To comply with this rule, mine operators are implementing a variety of control technologies. In this study two types of control technologies (ventilation and cabs) which are being implemented in limestone mines were investigated. Two stone mines in this study use large diameter propeller fans for main mine ventilation and direct the air to the faces using auxiliary fans, stoppings, and long pillars while bypassing the old mine workings. NIOSH measured for sub-micrometer elemental carbon (EC) using SKC DPM cassettes (analyzed using NIOSH 5040) and a near real time instrument. With the present ventilation and the number and type of vehicles used, the concentration of EC from DPM at the working areas was at or below 400 µg/m3 for both mines and about 166 µg/m3 and 251 µg/m3 at the returns. The real time data showed that the ventilation was reaching the working areas and effectively diluting the DPM. Environmental cabs were also used to reduce DPM exposures in three underground limestone mines. Using NIOSH method 5040 and near real time EC instrumentation, NIOSH sampled inside and outside of a loader cab at one of these limestone mines to determine the effectiveness of the cab. The cab was found to be over 90% effective in removing DPM as long as the cab system was properly maintained, and doors and windows were closed.

Milling circuits are known to be difficult to control. In order to address these difficulties, it was decided to develop and test a model predictive controller (MPC) for a milling circuit. A milling simulator was written using Microsoft Visual C++ and used to design and test the MPC controller. Due to the large number of tuning parameters in a controller of this type, an optimizing algorithm was written that automatically tunes the controller. Good, robust control was obtained when the controller was tuned using this algorithm. Control was further improved by combining feedback and feed forward control and by using quadratic programming in the MPC algorithm. The movement of the manipulated variables was reduced by using a novel technique that allows the controlled variable to vary within a specified region around the set point. An optimiser controller was also successfully implemented to control the circuit at its maximum throughput.

The complex heterogeneous equilibria associated with the production of manganese ferroalloys have been simulated by employing recently developed thermochemical databases. The non-ideal Mn-Fe-Si-C alloy and the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-FeO slag system have been modelled separately by the compound energy and cellular model. A large number of experimental thermodynamic and phase-equilibrium data were used to evaluate the model parameters for the liquid and solid Mn-Fe-Si-C phases. In addition to the liquid metal phase, solid mixture phases occurring in the Mn-Fe-Si-C system have also been studied. Over 500 measured equilibrium data have been utilised to verify and calibrate the model calculations. The paper will present typical simulation results, from activities of components to multicomponent heterogeneous equilibria. Good agreements can be obtained for many important technological parameters such as carbon solubility, phase relations and equilibrium diagrams, element distribution as function of temperature and slag composition etc. Application of the present models to the silicomanganese production will be demonstrated in this paper.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are regarded as environmentally friendly light sources due to their high energy efficiency and lack of mercury content. LEDs are used for a variety of domestic and commercial lighting systems, where they are replacing incandescent and fluorescent lamps at a rapid rate. Incandescent lamps inefficiently consume energy because electricity is mostly converted to heat rather than light. This causes unnecessary environmental impacts and energy consumption associated with power generation and transmission from a life cycle perspective. Although fluorescent lamps are more energy-efficient than incandescent lamps, their disposal at end-of-life presents special challenges because of the presence of toxic mercury. Despite the seemingly apparent advantages of LED, very few studies have rigorously addressed potential environmental consequences of their disposal. Specifically, LEDs are designed with III-V semiconductors that presumably consist of toxic and rare materials, including arsenic, gallium, and indium. We hypothesize that, depending on their concentrations and leachability, these constituents may also contribute to render LEDs as hazardous waste at the end of their useful life.

Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) is a high volume low concentration methane source. The capture or use of methane from VAM is challenging, which results in the routine discharge of methane into the atmosphere. Mitigating VAM has the benefits of providing an energy source and reducing the atmospheric Greenhouse Gas (GHG) burden. The GHG radiative forcing effect of methane is 17?23 times as potent as carbon dioxide on a 100-year time horizon. Thus, any reduction in atmospheric methane would be beneficial. The calorific value of methane is 55.5 MJ/Kg; therefore, a 100 m3/s flow with VAM concentrations from 0.1?1% can provide 3.8?38 MW of exploitable power. Strategies to mitigate VAM such as: Thermal Flow Reverse Reactors (TFRR), Catalytic Flow Reverse Reactors (CFRR), Lean Burn and Catalytic Gas Turbines, Biothermica Vamox®, Megtec VOCSIDIZER©, and Vamcat? are briefly reviewed. The review of VAM mitigation technologies reveals disadvantages such as the need to maintain a minimum internal heat capable of oxidizing the methane. This requirement uses all of the available methane up to the point of reaction sustainability and up to half at the highest methane concentration in VAM. Some systems may introduce a pressure drop to the ventilation system, which would impinge on the existing ventilation system design. These impediments necessitate the development of a more amenable technology. In the proposed system, gas turbines (GT), coupled to a combustion chamber with an external fuel supply, assist the combustion of the VAM. The combustion-chamber coupled system provides electricity, while the heat contained in the GT exhaust gases increases the temperature of the VAM, encouraging the development of a flame inside a combustion chamber. The flow from the combustion chamber streams through a primary air/fluid heat exchanger capable of producing steam of a high enough quality to generate electricity using conventional steam turbines. The residual heat after primary extraction, directed through other equipment, provides additional heat based products such as industrial scale dry air, chilling by an absorption chiller or hot water. The overall design of the system is scalable for low to high VAM flows or variations in concentrations and is capable of providing the company or community with heating, chilling, hot water, electricity or motive force as needed by the particular site or community. The Multi-generation system uses heat from three sources to provide clean efficient energy while mitigating the atmospheric emissions of methane. These sources are heat from the GT, often considered waste heat, heat from fuel injected into the igniters and heat from the VAM. The opportunity to collect carbon credits may improve the economics. In order to design a system with this capacity, a detailed analysis of the combustion characteristics of three separate flows is required. VAM is the main airflow, having the highest volumetric effect, while the GT exhaust and the additional fuel added to the hot exhaust flow of the gas turbine are lower flows, but have a higher velocity and temperature. The aim of the modeling undertaken in this work is to establish the combustion dynamics, degree of pre-heating required and the geometry essential to the design of combustion based VAM mitigation multi-generation systems.

Abstract: The paper describes the engineering-geological conditions and the structural decisions of the underground machine hall of Rogun HPP under construction in Tadjikistan on Vaksh river as well as the results of physical model studies and long-term in-situ investigations of the variation of the stress-strain state of the surrounding rock mass and the supports of openings, and the assessment of the stability of openings during and after the construction. The analysis of the results of long-term in-situ observations and previous model studies permitted to make the assessment of the present-day state of the machine hall and give recommendations of its further use. Zusammenfassung: Im Vortrag werden die ingenieurgeologischen Bedingungen und konstruktiven Lösungen für die unterirdischen Maschinenhalle des in der Republik Tadshikistan am Fluss Wachsch im Bau stehenden Rogunskaja-Wasserkraftwerkes, die Ergebnisse von experimentellen Forschungen (in physikalischen Modellen) und Naturbeobachtungen der Spannungs-Verformungszustandsänderungen des umliegenden Felsmassivs und Ausbaues von Untertagebauten, sowie Ergebnisse der Bewertung der Standfestigkeit von Untertagebauten während des Bauvorganges und nach der Bauperiode beschrieben. Auf Grund der Analyse von Ergebnissen der dauernden Naturbeobachtungen und früher durchgeführten geomechanischen Modellversuche wird der heutige Zustand der Maschinenhalle des Wasserkraftwerkes bestimmt und werden die Empfehlungen für ihren weiteren Benutzung angeführt. Annotation: L’exposé décrit les conditions d’ingénieur et celles géologiques, et les solutions constructives de la salle des machines de la Centrale hydroélectrique (CHE) Rogounskaya sur le fleuve Vakhch, les résultats d’études expérimentales (sur des modèles physiques) et d’observations extérieures sur place concernant des changements de l’état de tension-déformation d’un massif environnant et du cuvelage des excavations, ainsi que les résultats d’évaluation de la stabilité de l’excavation au cours de la construction et à la période post-construction. With increased stripping ratios and with dwindling ore content, the mining fraternity is increasingly turning to larger and larger equipment for profitable open pit operations. The availability of higher horsepower prime movers and increased-capacity electric transmissions using either wheel-mounted or axle-mounted traction motors makes a reality of single-axle, rear dump trucks having 150 to 250 ton capacity. The size of electric loading shovels is inherently geared to the size of haulage equipment. To work effectively with this new generation of trucks, the Harnischfeger Corporation has introduced its P&H Model 2800 with a capacity of 20 to 25 cu yd and a working weight of nearly 1,500,000 lb. The Model 2800, depicted in Figure 1 loading a 200 ton truck, has many new electric and mechanical features designed to give excellent production and low cost operation. Chief among the new features is the ELECTROTORQUE control system. Electrotorque is a completely static, solid state electronic system supplying controlled power both to the armatures and to the fields of the d-c shovel drive motors. It eliminates many major electrical rotating machines and their attendant maintenance. The system was developed jointly by ASEA of Sweden and Harnischfeger Corp.

"North American Palladium commissioned the new concentrator at the Lac des Iles mine in the summer of 2001. The 15,000 tonnes per day mill replaced the existing 2,400 tonnes per day facility, as part of a major mine expansion.At Lac des Iles, the grain size distribution of the platinum group minerals (PGM) is bi-modal. Roughly two-thirds of the PGM are relatively coarse-grained, and often associated with fast floating copper and nickel sulphides. The remainder is ultra-fine, and locked in silicates, which poses a special challenge to the metallurgist. The previous mill typically recovered just the fast-floating mineralisation, but to achieve target recoveries, the new mill has to recover a substantial amount of the ultra-fine PGM. The metallurgical challenges associated with the recovery of fine-grained PGM in the talcous Lac des Iles ores, are described.The paper describes the approach used in circuit optimisation, and how metallurgical and operational optimisation raised palladium recoveries by more than 6% in six months, by tuning the circuit to recover some of the ultra-fine PGM mineralisation.BACKGROUNDThe Lac des Iles mine, owned and operated by North American Palladium Limited, is located about 115 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The mine originally opened in December 1993, and prior to 2001 included a mill capable of handling 2,400 tonnes per day of ore delivered from the nearby Roby pit.Following an intensive exploration programme conducted in 1999, and a detailed feasibility study, conducted in 2000, North American Palladium initiated a mine expansion project, the objective being to expand milling throughput from 2,400 tonnes per day to 15,000 tonnes per day. This required construction of an entirely new mill, which was commissioned in May 2001."

Anglo Platinum has initiated a project to investigate hydraulic hoisting technology for platinum mines. Hydraulic hoisting systems are categorized as pumping, fluidizing feeder or displacement feeder systems. Positive displacement piston diaphragm pumps are most suitable for pumping systems but they require that the ore be milled prior to pumping. Fluidizing feeders are unsuitable for platinum ore applications due to the large percentage of fines in the ore. The three-chamber pipe displacement feeder has been most widely used for hydraulic hoisting and is the most suitable technology for platinum mines. Eight hydraulic hoisting applications covering pumping and displacement feeder technologies are reviewed. The key factors to be assessed in selecting a hydraulic hoisting system for a platinum mine are discussed. A typical platinum mine configuration will comprise an ore preparation plant (to produce -15mm material through screening or crushing), motive water pump on surface, high pressure water pipeline from surface to underground, ore slurrification plant, three-chamber displacement feeder, and a high pressure slurry pipeline to surface. The water and slurry pipelines are housed in a purpose drilled borehole. A hydraulic hoisting system selection chart is presented. A 150mm diameter system with a 25 MPa pressure rating is required to hoist 60 000 t/m from a depth of 1 200 m. Generic capital and operating costs are presented. A major potential advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the fines, which contain a high percentage of PGMs, are captured underground and transported directly to the concentrator. Hydraulic hoisting technology is ideally suited to providing supplementary hoisting capacity to existing shafts that have reached the skip hoisting capacity limit. The main advantage for new shafts is the potential to significantly simplify underground rock handling and transportation. All hydraulic hoisting system components are proven. The only risk area is the wear rates of the valves and piping. Current estimates are based on gold ore. The business cases investigated show that the financial viability of the installations are not sensitive to wear rate. The Ebor Volcano in north eastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19 - 20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2 - 19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (~48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at ~19.0 - 19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichmentof SiO2, SFeOlMgO, alkalies and HFSE.

Entre sus principales objetivos están: la determinación de los stándares de producción en tonelaje, leyes, costos y plazos, que hagan rentables los procesos de operación minera, la definición de sistemas standarizados que generen valor económico en cada uno de sus procesos. Asmismo, se realizó un diagnóstico previó que abarcó los procesos de geología, planeamiento, exploración, explotación, beneficio de minerales en planta concentradora, mantenimiento y proceso de comunicación gerencial. Los resultados y datos de este diagnóstico tiene como base la referencia para la evaluación y avance del proyecto.
