Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. However, when the transportation of stone is also considered, the desired end is to achieve that delivered cost which maximizes the company f s net return. Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater's operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

"All milling operations would like to achieve the best possible recovery in combination with the highest achievable throughput. Unfortunately, many operations have problems with low recovery, low throughput or both. In the majority of these cases investigated by the author, the solutions to improve recovery and throughput were simple. The solutions did not include implementation of new technology or major capital, but rather a return to fundamentals. In most cases, problems occurred because the operation was not following their own operating procedures, because the design of the circuit was changed without adequate change management or understanding of the implications of changes, or because basic metallurgical measurements and control were not taken or ignored. In this paper, examples of these problems and their solutions derived from long and varied experience will be discussed. The objective of this presentation is to provide the milling operator with practical and readily implementable solutions to common milling issues to improve throughput and recovery.INTRODUCTION Mill operations can be evaluated by many operating parameters, but the two best indicators are recovery and throughput. These two parameters summarize the wellbeing of an operation. The grade to the mill is also a good indicator, but this is usually controlled by the mine. The best recovery and throughput are achieved through a team work involving operators, maintenance workers and metallurgical staff. The milling operations include many unit operations, such as crushing, grinding, flotation, leaching, carbon in leach, Merrill Crowe, roaster, autoclave and refinery. The tools available to the operations are plant design, process measurements, assays, metallurgical balance, and operating strategy. Twelve real life examples of improvements of recovery and throughput are presented in this paper. EXAMPLE 1: CRUSHING CIRCUIT WITHOUT FINE ORE BIN At this operation plant throughput could not be maintained at a high rate because feed to the mill became coarse during the day. The cone crusher was feeding the ball mill directly. As the day wore on, the gap on the cone crusher would slowly increase, which would cause the product size to increase. This would increase the re-circulating load on the ball mill. The throughput would decrease accordingly. Furthermore, the throughput would decrease more with high frequency of maintenance on the cone crusher."

Recovery via gravity is one of the oldest mineral processing methods available. Unfortunately, the use of gravity techniques for gold recovery has been in decline for the past century as more effective chemical processes such as flotation and leach/CIP have been developed. Recently, with the push towards more sustainable environmental outcomes, the benefits of gravity separation have become more apparent. While gravity as a unit process is not usually capable of achieving as high a recovery as flotation or whole ore cyanidation, a combination of gravity devices alone or in conjunction with these processes can offer significant advantages to the operator. This paper reviews the range of gravity devices available, their application and the results that can be achieved by maximizing gravity through the use of a combination of gravity recovery devices. Three case studies are provided.

SINCE the World War, excepting for a few brief periods of relief, the American petroleum industry has been obliged to meet its important economic responsibility to this nation hampered by the maladjustment that inevitably follows a marked and unwholesome over-production of its raw material, crude oil. Despite the warnings of the Federal Oil Conservation Board and the endeavors of many of the leaders in the business to stem the flow of oil from the wells of the country, the evil ,not only persists but, at the moment, seems more malignant than ever before. Unless the local and temporary restraints on drilling and production now in effect in California, Wyoming, Texas, and Oklahoma are continued, and, indeed, unless stricter and more comprehensive measures of the same sort are imposed and adhered to by the industry in those States, over-production in the enterprise during the current year will be more pronounced than in any other period in history.

Recent advances in X-ray diffraction (XRD) technology have made it possible to conduct powder XRD measurements on samples at high temperatures during reaction. State-of-the-art detectors are now capable of rapidly acquiring diffraction patterns across a wide angular range (typically 120"20) enabling phase transformation rates to be measured directly during sample reaction. In this study, the phase transformations during the reduction of hematite to metallic iron by five per cent hydro ºen in nitrogen gas mixtures, were measured in situ between 500 - 700 C. Complete X-ray diffraction patterns were acquired within 15 seconds every one minute, enabling direct measurement of the transient phase abundances during the reaction. The data were quantitatively analysed by the Rietveld method to yield the abundances of hematite, magnetite, wustite and metallic iron, as functions of time during the reduction process. A first-order reactions-in-series model was proposed, and the reaction rate constants and activation energy were determined from the time-dependent phase abundance data.

It cleared our minds, for a few hours at least, of what Hitler, Hirohito, the New Deal, and the tribe in the Treasury are trying to do to strangle American enterprise. We mustn't forget this, but it's a relief to get our thoughts away from it occasionally. GRINDING-There was a further contribution to the excellent work that the Allis-Chalmers laboratory staff has been doing for the grinding fraternity in compiling-and publishing-a carefully quantitative list of comparative resistances of ores and other materials to comminution (T.P. 1579, Bond-Maxson). A diagnostic accuracy of ± 10 per cent was claimed for estimates based on these figures. Are they really that good? How about some of you men in the field writing M&M about it?

"Raw materials are among the main building blocks of a growing economy. Without raw materials, no matter whether it is primary or secondary, production is not possible. Products with high added value require special materials. Recently, worldwide production of some important raw materials mainly comes from a handful of countries, for example: China (Rare Earths Elements (REE)), Russia, South Africa (Platinum Group Elements (PGE)), Democratic Republic of Congo (Cobalt), etc. In the EU as well as in Hungary, the importance of the so called 14 critical raw materials has been recognized. Within the frame of the TÁMOP-4.2.2.A-11/1/KONV-2012-0005 - CriticEL project, the Institute of Raw Materials Preparation and Environmental Processing in cooperation with the Institute of Mineralogy and Geology of the University of Miskolc are working on the exploration of the primary and secondary sources and developing innovative preparation technologies of critical raw materials in Hungary. The research work showed in this article, focused on the recovery of critical materials from LCD TVs and monitors. There are high deviations in different literatures regarding to concentrations of critical elements in displays (e.g.: indium), probably because of the differences in production year, producers and recovery technologies. During the research - described in this study - a well specified sample of quite large amount of displays had been used. The exact place and shape of the ITO (indium-tin oxide) layer were determined by SEM analysis. The applied preparation technology was developed based on the results of our investigations and by technologies found in the literature. The developed process accomplishes two main parts: the mechanical preparation (mainly the liberation of different display layers, removal of liquid crystal) and the acidic dissolution of indium."

AN unusually interesting meeting devoted to the discussion of the ways and means of improving coal mining practice, through the larger use of machinery underground, was held in the Auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building on March 11. The meeting was organized by the Materials Handling Division of the A. S. M. E. and held under the auspices of the Metropolitan Section of that Society and the National Coal Association. The New York Section of the A. I. M. E., which had been invited to participate, found itself unable to do so formally because of a conflicting date for its March meeting but informally did its part to aasure the success of the meeting. As a result of the discussion at and preceding the meeting, the National Coal Association, through Walter Barnum, chairman of its research committee, has asked the A. S. M. E. and A. I. M. E. to join the Association in a study of the present problems of the bituminous coal industry. Messrs. Harry L. Gandy, Calvin W. Rice and H. Foster Bain have been selected to act as a committee which shall develop plans for a joint program.

The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (58 Stat., 190; 30 U.S.C. Sup., Secs. 321- 325) was approved by Congress April 5, 1944; it directed the Bureau of Mines to build demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and agricultural products. The most important oil-shale de- posits in the United States are in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The oil shale of western Colorado generally is more amenable to exploitation, more persistent, and apparently richer than elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Region. It occurs at the top of a high plateau surrounded by bold, nearly vertical escarpments 500 to 600 ft in height. The top 400 to 500 ft of these escarpments comprises an oil-shale measure that averages 15 gal of shale oil per ton; the bottom 70 to 100 ft of the measure, called the Mahogany Ledge, averages over 30 gal per ton. The full measure in a 1000-square-mile area is estimated to contain 300 billion barrels of shale oil;' the Mahogany Ledge is estimated to contain 100 billion barrels of oil. INTRODUCTION THOSE concerned with coal mining operations in Alberta have been asked repeatedly the same question, "Why is mechanization in Alberta proceeding so slowly as to lag far behind the mines in the United States?" This question is often asked in such a manner as to indicate that a severe reprimand is overdue to the mining engineers of this Province for their apparent indifference to the problem of improving their mining operations by increased mechanization. To the average person, unacquainted with mining conditions and problems, mechanization appears to be simply a matter of introducing equipment to load coal underground and, once this is done, substantial economies in operating costs will automatically follow. Invariably, those who have followed this simple reasoning have found, to their regret, that such is not the case and that effective mechanization involves something more than the mere process of introducing loading equipment into a mine. To be effective, any programme of mechanization must take into consideration all operations incidental to the mining, transportation, and handling of the coal from the working face to the tipple, and must utilize equipment which can be best adapted to any peculiar condition or circumstance prevailing in the mine concerned. In the use of such equipment, the net and final result should be an improvement in operating costs of sufficient magnitude to at least return to the operator, over a specific period of years or during the expected life of that equipment, all his investment plus a fair return on that investment.

Powder River Basin (PRB) mines were originally built to serve power plants designed specifically for their coal. Sulfur was the major concern, with BTU and sodium limiting the market for some. The Clean Air Act has extended the PRB market into plants converting from other coals. These new customers are more sensitive to constituents affecting boiler and precipitator performance. At the same time, the prospect of deregulation is forcing power companies to control cost more stringently than ever. Jacobs Ranch Mine has responded to the changing marketplace with an expanded coal quality and customer service program.

It seems that mining has been in the doldrums for awhile. Except for gold, metals prices remain depressed. And economic conditions in the United States and around the globe have put governments in a financial bind. This affects new building and infra-structure repairs, which, in turn, have a major impact the building materials industry. Add to that the severe environmental and regulatory restrictions placed on the mining industry in developing new mines and expanding existing ones. It’s enough to make a mining engineer/geologist/metallurgist go sell real estate. So why do those employed in the mining industry stay in the business and remain optimistic? Many of them will say that they have been through down cycles before and know that an upswing is in the offing. They also know that society will always need the commodities they produce. And they love the challenge. The challenge in mining’s case is producing commodities as cheaply as possible, in an environmentally sound manner and improving the quality of life in the communities where they work.

COBALT is a silvery white metal with a slight bluish cast, strongly resembling nickel in its appearance and properties, notably its resistance to corrosion, although its alloys with other metals differ quite decidedly in their properties from those of nickel. The name cobalt was derived from the German "Kobold" meaning goblin and this came to be applied to the cobalt minerals which, although they resembled ores, did not readily yield metal when smelted by the primitive processes available in the Middle Ages. Cobalt minerals were used as pigments by potters and glass workers before the Christian era. Cobalt blue glass was found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients were entirely unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt and the metal itself was only isolated about the middle of the eighteenth century by Brandt although the preparation of cobalt compounds had been carried on in a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits at Schneeberg, Germany, in 1470. The metal is fairly hard, with a density when pure of 8.81 in the cast state and 8.92 after working. The com¬mercial grade of cobalt has a density of about 8.75 in the cast state. The atomic weight is 58.97. The Brinell hardness of the pure metal is 124; that of the commercial grade varies from as low as 100 to as high as 138, depending upon the impurities present. Pure cobalt has a sharp melting point at 1478°C. The tensile strength of the pure metal in the cast condition is said to be higher than that of any other pure metal. Kalmus gives it as 34,400 lb. per sq. in. for cast unannealed metal; the effect of annealing at 850 to 900°C. is to raise the strength slightly. The yield point is close to the ultimate strength and the reduction in area and elongation are both low. Mechanical working raises the tensile strength of pure cobalt rapidly and in the form of wire it will be over 100,000 lb. per sq. in. The presence of small quantities of carbon in the commercial metal raises the tensile strength to as high as 61,000 lb. per sq. in., the reduction in area and elongation being raised at the same time to approximately 20 per cent.

"There is a need to develop cost effective renewable energy processes for the production of clean fuels that can simultaneously mitigate the U.S. energy/global environmental security issue. If H2 can be obtained cost effectively via the splitting of water using concentrated sunlight, then it’s possible to operate a fuel cell using renewable H2 or to synthesize other fuels based on renewable H2 for generating electricity or for running internal combustion engines. For example, H2 can be reacted with sequestered carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce syngas (H2/CO) via reverse water gas shift (RWGS), i.e. H2 + CO2 ? CO + H2O. The syngas can be catalytically methanated to form synthetic natural gas (SNG) or it can be catalytically reformed to produce liquid fuels such as “green” gasoline via the MTG process (syngas? methanol ? gasoline). The desert SW United States is home to world class sunlight. Fundamental ferrite thermodynamics will be reviewed, an example of the beneficial effect of ferrite surface area on reaction kinetics will shown, and process economics will be investigated for a 100,000 kg/day facility to produce H2.Introduction and Background ThermodynamicsSpinel ferrites of the form MxFe3-xO4, where M generally represents Ni, Zn, Co, Mn, or other transition metals, have been shown to be capable of splitting water according to the two step cycle shown below:MxFe3-xO4 + solar thermal energy ? xMO + (3-x)FeO + 0.5 O2 (1)xMO + (3-x)FeO + H2O ? MxFe3-xO4 + 2H2 (2)This is an inherently clean and sustainable process, as the only net inputs are solar energy and water, and the net outputs are hydrogen and oxygen. Ferrite water splitting cycles are advantages compared to other high temperature water splitting cycles, such as the ZnO/Zn and Mn2O3/MnO cycles, because thermal reduction has been demonstrated at significantly lower temperatures[1, 2]. As a result, overall efficiency may be increased due to the fact that radiation losses increase as the fourth power of temperature, and material considerations for reactor design should be more flexible. Additionally, cycle repeatability has been demonstrated with relative ease as compared to other thermochemical cycles [3-6]. However, the amount of hydrogen per mole that is generated is significantly less than for other high temperature thermochemical cycles due to the fact that only Fe3+ is capable of being reduced at the temperatures of interest[6]. In addition, water oxidation kinetics appear to be very slow, likely due to diffusion or surface area limitations created by near surface oxidation [6, 7]."

THE upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead area was the first major lead-producing section in the United States. The lead ore, found near the surface in crevices, was relatively pure galena that could be smelted directly into lead, at first in log hearth furnaces and later in more efficient blast type furnaces. French Canadian fur traders encouraged the Indians to mine the lead ore and showed them how to smelt it into lead that had a high value for bullets1 Nicholas Perrot found lead ore on the Mississippi River bluffs near the junction of Wisconsin and Illinois and in 1690 established a trading post on the Wisconsin side of the river opposite the present site of Dubuque, Iowa.2 Shortly after 1720 discovery of Mine La Mott in Missouri diverted considerable attention from the Upper Mississippi area. Mining continued on a desultory basis with operations concentrated in the Galena, Illinois-Dubuque, area. In 1740 at least 20 miners were at work in the Fever River area around Galena and are reported to have shipped 2500 70-lb pigs of lead to Kaskaskia in 1741." Julien Dubuque established a mining and smelting operation in 1790 near the city that bears his name and was granted sole right to exploit the mining operations on the lands of the Sauk and the Fox Indians. He is reported to have produced 30,000 70-lb pigs of lead in 1805. Following the death of Dubuque in 1810 the Indians refused to let the white miners enter their lands, and little was done on the Iowa side of the river until the Indians were removed by treaty with the United States government in 1832." Early mining was entirely for lead but as the crevices were followed down, increasing percentages of zinc sulphide and zinc carbonate were encountered and at first discarded. Later a market became available for the zinc ores, and hand jigging devices were made to separate the lead, the zinc, and the rock or waste materials. The first record of zinc production from the area is for 1860. Production of zinc passed that of lead before 1900, reached a peak of 64,000 short tons in 1917, fell off rapidly and continually to about 2000 short tons in 1938, and since 1940 has ranged from 11,000 to 19,000 short tons. Lead has been of considerably less importance since 1900, and at present only about 10 pct as much lead as zinc is produced. Practically all of the zinc ore has come from orebodies that are rather flat and wide with considerable length as compared to width. Most of the early lead came from the crevice type deposit, but present production is from the predominately flat zinc orebodies. The Graham-Snyder orebody, scene of Eagle Picher operations, is practically all zinc with little or no lead being recovered. Marcasite, present in varying amounts, makes production of finished concentrates by gravity separation impractical. Satisfactory lead and zinc concentrates have been produced since flotation was introduced in the area in 1927. An acid recovery plant was operated for about 20 years after World War I, but it has been dismantled, and no recovery of the iron sulphides in the ores of the district is being made at the present time. In June 1950 there were three companies operating mines and mills, Tri-State Zinc Co., Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., and Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. had completed a shaft at a new orebody and had started to develop the mine which will supply the Cuba City mill. The Cuba Mining Co. was holding the Andrews Mine inactive. The Dodgeville Mining Co. was not operating but was exploring for additional reserves. Several small mines were selling ore to the Eagle Picher mill. A general area map is given in Fig. 1. He is reported to have produced 30,000 70-lb pigs of lead in 1805. Following the death of Dubuque in 1810 the Indians refused to let the white miners enter their lands, and little was done on the Iowa side of the river until the Indians were removed by treaty with the United States government in 1832." Early mining was entirely for lead but as the crevices were followed down, increasing percentages of zinc sulphide and zinc carbonate were encountered and at first discarded. Later a market became available for the zinc ores, and hand jigging devices were made to separate the lead, the zinc, and the rock or waste materials. The first record of zinc production from the area is for 1860. Production of zinc passed that of lead before 1900, reached a peak of 64,000 short tons in 1917, fell off rapidly and continually to about 2000 short tons in 1938, and since 1940 has ranged from 11,000 to 19,000 short tons. Lead has been of considerably less importance since 1900, and at present only about 10 pct as much lead as zinc is produced. Practically all of the zinc ore has come from orebodies that are rather flat and wide with considerable length as compared to width. Most of the early lead came from the crevice type deposit, but present production is from the predominately flat zinc orebodies. The Graham-Snyder orebody, scene of Eagle Picher operations, is practically all zinc with little or no lead being recovered. Marcasite, present in varying amounts, makes production of finished concentrates by gravity separation impractical. Satisfactory lead and zinc concentrates have been produced since flotation was introduced in the area in 1927. An acid recovery plant was operated for about 20 years after World War I, but it has been dismantled, and no recovery of the iron sulphides in the ores of the district is being made at the present time. In June 1950 there were three companies operating mines and mills, Tri-State Zinc Co., Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., and Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. had completed a shaft at a new orebody and had started to develop the mine which will supply the Cuba City mill. The Cuba Mining Co. was holding the Andrews Mine inactive. The Dodgeville Mining Co. was not operating but was exploring for additional reserves. Several small mines were selling ore to the Eagle Picher mill. A general area map is given in Fig. 1.
