In the past thirty years, there have been a large number of ownership changes in the industrial minerals arena and many medium to large companies have made industrial mineral acquisitions. Industrial minerals are exceedingly important to the achievement and maintenance of a high standard of living in the United States and in other developed countries. In the developed countries of the world the value of industrial minerals exceeds the values of the metallic minerals. In the U.S., the value of our industrial minerals is some 2 112 times that of the value of our metallic minerals. Almost every single thing we use or touch in our daily lives can be related to an industrial mineral. Examples are the construction industry, agriculture, ceramics, paper, paint, plastics, electronics, glass, petroleum, and many more in which an industrial mineral or minerals playa functional role. Industrial minerals are exceedingly diverse in their values, properties, and applications. Sand and gravel is an example of an essential industrial mineral commodity which has a low price but moves in very high volumes. Geographic location of this commodity is critical because of transportation costs. High calcium limestone or marble has a moderately high price particularly if it is white enough for use as a pigment or extender. This moves in moderately high tonnages and location is not as critical be-cause it can be shipped for considerable distances and still be competitive. Some specialty industrial minerals such as a white tale or white bentonite sells at a high price at low volumes and geographic location is not a major factor in marketing. Prices of industrial minerals do not tend to be cyclic and generally keep up with inflationary increases. Because of the diversity of industrial minerals very careful analyses of acquisitions or divestitures must be undertaken by buyers and/or sellers in order to prevent serious mistakes.

Alumina demand is steadily climbing around the world and is likely to continue to do so for many years. In such a commodity industry, the question arises as to what effort should be expended on innovation, given that for an individual company, the drivers of change are cost and quality as the market demand is essentially assured. This is of course a long-term view. The current conditions are less attractive. In this presentation, we review the broad issues that are considered targets for collaborative development by the industry as recently updated in the alumina industry roadmap published by the International Aluminium Institute in 2010. While they cover areas such as ?mine rehabilitation, residue management and use, alumina production from high sulfur bauxite, bauxite beneficiation, energy efficiency and alternative technologies for alkali and alumina recovery from bauxite residues,? it must be remembered that each refinery is different in terms of the feed material and the circumstances of waste disposal. Of particular interest is the more competitive area of breakthrough technologies. In the presentation, we will consider a range of opportunities that could transform the industry, from relatively near term possibilities such as bauxite activation through possibilities to eliminate crystallization as currently practiced to complete alternatives, such as the use of hyperaccumulating plants. Against this optimism, some of the realities that hold back breakthrough innovation will be presented for discussion.

WHILE mining engineers have been searching in far corners of the country and of the world for hidden wealth there has grown up around us in nearly every city great wealth-producing mines calling for the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars and yielding products now sold for over half a billion dollars yearly-largely unknown and almost wholly neglected by mining engineers. But this neglect is explainable and excusable. They are industries of very recent origin-practically the growth of the last 25 years. They are in a very large measure the result of tremendous developments in engineering construction and the rapidly expanding use of portland cement concrete for structures of every description. Concrete as a material of construction is going through an evolution very much as did cast iron and other metals used in engineering; and this phase of the industry should appeal to the imagination of metallurgical engineers. At first iron was iron-a material of uncertain properties, owing both to small differences in chemical composition and in methods of manufacture. By successive steps iron was studied and knowledge of its properties developed-the striking effects of very small percentages of other minerals and of various heat-treatments.

AT this time of the year, engineering schools are releasing a group of young men who probably are, on the average, in much the same attitude of mind as a person arriving at the terminal station of a railway journey; namely, of having a general idea of his objective, but having to make a decision as to just where he is going and how best to get there. The man leaving the train can at first follow the crowd, but it soon breaks up, as one goes one way and one another, until he has to choose his own course. The recent graduate may do the equivalent of following the crowd by accepting the first position offered, but this only postpones a decision as to where he is going and how best to get there. So many young engineers ask for advice as to what to do that the following statement has been prepared as an attempt to make a general answer to such queries. The engineer taking his first job should realize two fundamental relations. The first is that in electing to be an engineer he has elected to be a hired man. A consulting engineer has more freedom than a man on a regular pay roll, but he is also a hired man; hired for briefer periods at a relatively high rate, but under the necessity of simultaneously doing his consulting work and developing new retainers. There is nothing derogatory in being a hired man (all doctors, lawyers and clergymen are hired men), but the tardy realization that he is one seems to give many an engineer a mental jolt that can be avoided if he accepts it from the beginning.

Many Third World countries of Third World Africa are well-endowed with minerals, especially gold. Political and economic conditions discouraged interest by Western capital for the several decades since colonial rule. Influence from Eastern Block countries has gone and the left wing orientation widely favored by Third World countries has almost disappeared. Under International Monetary Fund influence, these countries now solicit Western finance to expand their industries. Mining is especially encouraged. The paper describes the financing of some recent developments and examines trends and opportunities in some of the more attractive countries.

Subsequent to the unbundling of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) and the privatization of its constituent parts, the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) represents a third of the original conglomerate. Now run by private hands as a sub group of Vedanta Resources Plc of India, KCM is strategizing on how best to deal with the operational issues of the organisation to resolve some of the difficult, logistical, environmental, mineralogical and metallurgical problems being encountered to tum them into opportunities as the company turns around. This paper reviews the options being put in place to provide appropriate solutions and strategies including the treatment of the highly siliceous low energy copper belt concentrates in its mining operations in Zambia.

OPTICAL PROPERTIES of U.S. coals of differing rank have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines, for about 20 years. These investigations have been remade to further the development of an objective basis for petrographic analysis of coal and to add to knowledge of the structure and composition of coal and coal components by determining their optical constants in various regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Various experimental techniques have been used in these studies, including determination of reflectance from bulk specimens and transmittance of thin and ultrathin sections, interferometry, electron microscopy, and election diffraction. Similar studies leave also been made of graphite, the end product of coal metamorphism. The bureau of Mines conducted the first U.S. investigation of reflectance properties of coal components, laying the foundation for petrographic analysis based on arbitrary reflectance classes and for automated reflectance analysis of coals. Optical constants of coals of differing rank and of graphite have been determined in the ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrum. Maxima in the optical constants of graphite were observed in the ultraviolet region and were interpreted to be related to transitions of electrons between the valence and conduction bands. Similar maxima for coals, especially high-rank coals, appeared to be characteristic of the presence of graphitelike layers. A special application of optical theory to absorbing, anisotropic materials like graphite and high-rank coals has been developed. Electron microscopic and electron diffraction studies of coals have revealed various ultrafine structures in coal components and have shown the evolution of an oriented, crystalline graphite structure in high-rank coals.

The steepness of the slopes of an open pit mine has a substantial influence on the financial return of the mine. The paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross-section within each rock layer; i.e., the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is employed to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties, and factor of safety (FoS). Bench geometries (bench height, face inclination, minimum berm width) are imposed in the optimization as constraints which bind the maximum local inclination of the sought optimal profile together with any other constraints such as geological discontinuities that may influence slope failure. The obtained optimal profiles are always steeper than their planar counterparts (i.e., the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS) up to 8° depending on rock type and severity of constraints on local inclinations. The design of a copper mine is first carried out employing planar pitwalls, secondly adopting the optimal pitwall profiles determined by OptimalSlope. The adoption of optimal slope profiles leads to a 34% higher net present value and reductions of carbon footprint and energy consumption of 0.17 Mt CO2 eq and 82.5 million MJ respectively due to a 15% reduction of rockwaste volume.

The overall slope angle (OSA) of pit walls plays a crucial role in the financial return of open pit mines. The work showcases a novel design methodology where non-planar geotechnically optimal pit walls with an OSA steeper than what is used in current design practices are employed without compromising mine safety, i.e. the optimal profiles are featured by the same Factor of Safety (FoS) than their traditional design counterparts. In the current design practice, pit wall profiles are often designed to be planar in cross-section and the profile in between ramps especially tend to be defined by a constant inter-ramp angle.

"The mining industry is often challenged with the task of evaluating narrow vein open pit deposits. A realistic mineable solution from optimisation needs to accurately represent mining dilution and the practical limitations of mining equipment. Open pit dilution is driven according to mining method and fleet selection as this dictates the ‘selective mining unit’ (SMU) that can be practicably mined.Common evaluation methods represent dilution by:a mathematical dilution assumption addition of a dilution skin reblocking of the model to an appropriate SMU.This paper will explore an alternative method of applying dilution by adapting an underground stope modelling tool. By considering an SMU as a stope, automatic stope shape creators such as Datamine’s Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) can be used to create wireframes for each mining unit over the entire deposit. Using these wireframes, the model can be subblocked and assigned as either ore (inside the wireframe) or waste (outside the wireframe) prior to optimisation.The MSO process considers SMU geometry and a depth specific value-based cut-off. The result is an optimised solution for the deposit based on practical and achievable mining constraints rather than one based on generalised modifying factors.To evaluate the economic impact of the methods above, results have been costed and scheduled and a comparison of operating cash flows made.Citation:Swapp, S and Mann, C, 2016. Optimising the throughput of a mining network comprising all equipment from shovels to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills is a complicated task, yet the potential benefits can be significant. Key modelling challenges stem from the sheer number of possible routes which material can travel, different equipment operating under different constraints, and the rate of SAG mills being calculated through a nonlinear function of the blended materials’ rock attributes. Nevertheless, this is an ideal onapplication area of mathematical programming, a branch of operations research. This paper describes an application of mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to optimise the mining equipment network of one of the world’s largest copper mines.The model takes as input a year-long monthly mine schedule of shovels in different pits, pushbacks, sequences and faces which produce material to be moved through a network of crushers, conveyors, silos, distributors, stockpiles and SAG mills, ultimately outputting a daily operational plan for all equipment that maximises the throughput of the network. All operational constraints and business rules are considered, including three quality attributes of copper ore. Comparing model results with actual data shows an improvement of 4.47% in network throughput tonnage. Additionally, although the model is solved using a free, open-source solver, optimal solutions are still achieved within a practical timeframe.

A two-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear program is formulated for a mining complex to optimise strategic and tactical plans. The objective is to find the near optimal decisions for a mineral supply chain in the context with uncertainties in both ore supply and the commodity market (price and demand). The endogenous spot price in the commodity market and long-term sales contracts are considered in the formulation of the mining complex’s optimisation model and an ad hoc heuristic is developed to deal with the throughput – and head-grade-dependent recovery rate in processing plants. Numerical results indicate that the proposed heuristic is effective and efficient in numerical tests. Based on the proposed model and heuristic, a long-term contract design strategy is proposed for making decisions on the contract price and strategic investments. An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction û primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

El presente trabajo señala el proceso de optimización en la recuperación del cobre y molibdeno en la concentradora de Toquepala. La implementación y desarrollo de la remolienda del flujo de concentrado desarrollan un mayor grado de liberación, y por ende, una mayor recuperación del cobre y molibdeno en el circuito. Asimismo, el descarte de relave OK-50 ha permitido normalizar las recuperaciones de cobre y molibdeno en ciertas secciones de la flotación rougher de la planta, incrementando en la recuperación del cobre de 0.8% y 1.8% en molibdeno. Por ello, es factible mejorar las condiciones de operación de la planta a través del desarrollo de pruebas metalúrgicas llevadas adelante como un esfuerzo conjunto entre todos los integrantes del equipo Concentradora Toquepala.

Coking coal producers often encounter variations in clean coal quality when mining multiseam deposits containing coals with different washability and coking properties. This paper describes how, for a single coal property, an initial clean coal specification with an ash content of 8.5% on an air-dried basis (ADB) and a free swelling index (FSI) of 5.5 can be improved to a specification with 7.5% ash content ADB and an FSI of 6. This is accomplished by sorting coal seams into two groups for processing and blending. A preliminary economic model demonstrates how this improvement enhances economic returns through a beneficial factor.

INTRODUCTION Optimization, as measured by productivity gains, is being achieved in our nation's preparation plants principally by automation, economy of scale, and reducing maintenance. Increased tonnage per unit of investment, a1 so a measure of optimization, is being achieved by breaking with tradition and increasing plant utilization, while simultaneously improving on equipment re1iabi1ity. Improved qua1ity, another measure of optimization, is being attained through technical innovation. This review will concentrate on state-of-the- art unit operations and processes, and will not discuss emerging new technologies which are covered in detail in other presentations of this symposium. It is recognized that much of what will be discussed in this paper is not unique to the fine coal circuit, but is equally applicable to the entire preparation plant. However, the areas reviewed are the principal means being used today to optimize an existing preparation plant's fine coal circuit. Prior to designing and optimizing a fine coal cleaning circuit, the question that must first be answered is, "Do we even want a fine coal circuit? This is a much more complex question than is readily apparent, as most of you recognize. It can be argued either way. In the final analysis the "bottom line" will hold (Blackmore, 1982). If your sales contract a1 lows it, and the selling price can justify it, you most assuredly want to build a fine coal circuit into your preparation plant. In general today, most new preparation plants do have fine coal cleaning circuits. The purpose of fine coal cleaning has changed with time. Some of the early applications of fine coal cleaning were to prevent stream pollution rather than to prepare a product for market (Merrill a Pennington, 1962). During the 50's, 60's and into the 70's the principal thrust of fine coal cleaning was in metallurgical coal preparation. More recently, the emphasis of the 80's is on steam coal processing. There is no consensus on what is fine coal. Traditionally, fine coal would be anything below 1/4" in size. Because of the advances being made in intermediate coal cleaning processes, i.e. heavy media cyclones and jig cleaning, this discussion will define fine coal as -28 mesh (Aplan, 1987). Figure 1 is a plot of the size ranges of a large number of U.S. bituminous coals. In general the -28 mesh fraction of a bituminous coal will be between 7% and 18% of the ROM feed with reported ranges of 5% to 40% (Aplan, 1987). Consequently, traditional fine coal cleaning is general 1 y involved with a re1 actively mi nor portion of the coal feed. Every effort is taken both in terms of mining and preparation to keep it that way because of the high cost of cleaning fines. The move away from this posture, namely, the techniques to fine grind coal to liberate pyrite is probably the biggest challenge facing fine coal processing today.

Mining engineers spend countless hours and resources when designing a new underground coal mine. Their primary objective is to design the safest and most efficient operating mine with regards to coal production. A key variable often overlooked in this design stage is the slope conveyor. Typically, a slope conveyor is expected to operate with a 98-percent or higher availability. However, too often little effort is put forth by the mining engineer to optimize its design. Coal companies will rely on engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) companies for the preliminary design, because the slope conveyor will be considered part of the surface material handling processes. This preliminary design will be used when soliciting quotations for the slope conveyor. Unfortunately, EPCMs may not have enough expertise with conveyors to optimize the design. This expertise is available with an original equipment manufacture (OEM) of conveyors, which ultimately may be responsible for supplying the slope conveyor. Each OEM will provide a bid package that represents what it considers to be the optimal design.
