Nearly one third of the globally produced structural flat and long structural products are in the 0.11 to 0.16% carbon range. By definition, numerous steelmakers globally define this approximate carbon range as peritectic in their melting grade family within their organization. The metallurgical consequence is the result of numerous global structural specifications which allow carbon to wide carbon ranges resulting in quality issues. For example, such specifications as ASTM A588 set no minimum carbon and a 0.15 to 0.19%C maximum depending on the specific grade designated within the specification. This peritectic region is specifically challenging in production compared to less than 0.10%C because of solidification issues and a higher propensity for slab or billet cracking during continuous casting. During hot rolling, rejects and/or deviates are increased as well. The relative steelmaking operational cost of production is compared between peritectic and non-peritectic carbon compositions for a given specification.

THE better control of production was made the topic for a special program of the annual meeting of the Institute last February. In the discussion at that meeting it was brought out that in many branches of the mineral industry (as in other industries), there was faulty industrial coordination. Those who were best informed by reason of their intimate connection with coal, copper, oil, iron, lead and zinc, and almost all other of the essential minerals pointed to a condition of chronic over-capacity, to the dissipating use of irreplaceable minerals, to an unstabilized price structure, and to over-stimulatecl production and the destruction of some mineral resources over and above what is thought to be the needs of prudent cur- rent consumption. The discussion went far enough to point out the existence of various problems, and the question then raised was "what can be done by way of self-coordination of industry?" by "production control from within?" or in other words, "how can the mineral industry protect its resources against waste and at the same time protect both the producer and consumer against loss from prices that are too low or too high?"

In these times of increasing costs and diminished returns, energy consumption is one source of savings that remains relatively untapped in the mining sector. Typically, 15% to 40% of operational costs can be attributed to energy in mining operations. This ?process variable? is a complex, multi-faceted variable that involves government regulations, societal pressures, cost and competitiveness. A mining company able to successfully embrace an energy efficiency program is more often than not a successful mining company. Production optimization programs, relatively common today, provide increased production, increased availability of assets and, in many cases, improved quality. They generally ignore the energy question altogether. Production Energy Optimization combines reductions in energy consumption with production improvements to reduce the cost per unit of production while improving emissions reporting. An energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations is a critical component of Production Energy Optimization. This strategy must support the financial and operational integrity of the business. Developing a successful energy strategy requires a well structured approach such as following: ??Understanding where energy is being used and why, ??Recommending and implementing energy conservation measures, ??Driving visibility to targets and results, ??Re-evaluating continuously. As copper reserves deepen, they are becoming increasingly less pure. Penalty elements such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth are occurring in increasing concentrations. Environmental issues with smelters are leading to increases in penalty rates for these elements such that some concentrates may become difficult to sell. Arsenic concentration in Rosebery copper concentrates during 2010 varied between 3000 and 8500 ppm. Arsenic levels above 5000 ppm can preclude import to some customer countries. Optical mineralogy has indicated that arsenic in Rosebery copper concentrates is most commonly associated with tennantite (Cu12As4S13) in solid solution with tetrahedrite (Cu12As4S13). In addition, silver reports to concentrate as freibergite (Cu12As4S13 ). A reduction in arsenic content will therefore lead to a concurrent reduction in the silver content.A literature review by Long, Peng and Bradshaw (2012) indicated that arsenic bearing minerals could be removed using potential controlled flotation. Some success in reducing the amount of arsenic had also been reported using either roasting or chemical depression using reagents such as lime and cyanide. Due to the location of the Rosebery concentrator adjacent to world heritage listed temperate rainforest, the use of a roaster or cyanide was immediately discounted. Lime is already used as a reagent in the Rosebery flow sheet, so could be considered as a potential arsenic depressant.In order to determine a method of separating out the high arsenic bearing minerals, two series of flotation tests were conducted. Due to not to being our own sources, some energy sources such as oil and natural gas which are used frequently, are not reliable energy sources for our country. Coal is an important energy source that Turkey also has a certain reserve as many countries have. To be able to use for many years the reserves of this source that comes from fossils, there is a great need to make more investigation and development activities on it. On behalf of using more productively the current sources, briquetting facility is represented that commenced production in The Aegean Lignite Establishment in 2005 which is in Manisa, Soma. This facility is a part of General Directorate of Turkish Coal. This facility is run by Soma Coal Establishment that works in return for royalty in a licensed field that belongs to TKI. As the demand of market for 0.5 mm dust coal diminishes, we had to accumulate and stock unmerchantable dust coal. Besides, we have intermixed 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal obtained as a result of washing in coal washer with thermic coal with low price as we could not find a client in the market. In this study, the production stages of briquette coal with high quality produced as a result of pressing by mixing 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal with molasse and lime, quality control, and data?s obtained about calories and solidity of products were presented. By briquetting of 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal washed in coal washer, it became possible to sell these coals on a high unit price and by providing the demand of coal of the market, we contributed to productivity of our firm. The production of rare earth elements from ore usually consists of three steps; the separation of a concentrate of REE bearing minerals; the cracking of the REE minerals to liberate the REE into an aqueous solution and separation of REE into individual elements. This paper describes the results of laboratory tests conducted on a carbonate-rich REE ore containing bastnaesite and monazite. The tests cover the whole processing sequence of beneficiation, preparation of the REE solution using a caustic leach followed by acid leach to break monazite and bastnaesite and liberate REE into an aqueous solution and the partial separation of the REE using solvent extraction. Details on the product quality and process performances (recovery and impurities removal) are given for each studied step. The paper also discusses the economic advantage of separating the REE rather than producing a mixed REO product to be sold to a refinery for REE separation. A mini-pilot plant version of the process is currently planned.

The basic factors -population growth and industrial development -which will create energy demand are so fundamental to national economies that the ascending energy demand curve will be little affected by short-term factors.Because of the economic and practical advantages of nuclear power and the degree of present acceptance by electric utilities, there is no doubt that uranium will be a principal source of primary energy in industrial countries -and this will happen within a decade. Indeed, during this period it will be the fastest growing source of energy, capturing, for example, more than half of the electric utilities' expansion in the United States by 1980. The ready availability of energy sources from domestic and foreign resources is so essential to industrial nations that the long-range outlook for their adequacy is of prime importance. There has been international concern about the availability of uranium resources at reasonable cost to adequately support and foster the development of the nuclear power industry. Canada, fortunate in having established reserves and a potential in excess of any forseeable domestic demand, can confidently look forward to being a principal supplier to the industry."

The Walnut Creek Mine was developed in 1989 to supply lignite to the Texas-New Mexico Power TNP-ONE power plant. Being new, we had the opportunity to start from scratch and rethink many of the traditional methods of managing a mine operation. We had the opportunity to create a team environment, encouraging people to get involved and make decisions. The founding philosophy of the mine, "A Quality Product by Quality People", acknowledged that the key to a productive, quality operation was the people. This paper will explore methods employed by Walnut Creek in selection of team members, building the team and the relative success of these methods.

The title of this talk has brought some interesting responses - even before it was written - from different parts of the country. A geologist from the Western U. S, was deeply concerned with recent layoffs in his profession and the employment situation in general and wondered why "the AIME wasn't doing anything for the benefit of its members." A petroleum engineer in Texas said that a group in his field were studying "professionalism" and their professional status and wondered if there were any words of wisdom for him. A mining engineering professor from the East pointed out that the National Science Foundation did not include mining engineering as one of its recognized fields in one of its equipment funding programs. These are just a few examples of reactions received to date, but they serve to illustrate the broad image that the title has meant to various people. Actually the term profession is defined by Webster as "a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation." The word encroach means "to enter by gradual steps or by stealth into the possessions or rights of another", or "to advance beyond desirable or normal limits." The intention of this paper, as originally conceived and requested by the program chairman, was to combine those two words literally and talk about how the professional standing of mineral engineers is being eroded from people outside the profession. But the amazing preliminary response suggests that it may be timely to broaden the discussion by including some comments about professionalism in general. In the paper the terms "mineral engineer" or "mining engineering" are used frequently, but it should be clearly understood that much of what is said is valid and is intended for all fields covered by SME and perhaps for AIME in general.

Discussion of the paper of John Hays Hammond, presented at the Chattanooga meeting, October, 1908, and published in Bi.-Monthly Bulletin., No. 24, November, 1908, pp. 1171 to 117S. PROF. HENRY Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, En j. (communication to the Secretary'`) :-I welcome Mr. Hammond's paper as an. attempt to give definiteness to the best modern professional practice. Such a codification of our professional ethics is urgently needed, seeing how widely the views of mining engineers differ on some of the point-,. raised, for example, I have no hesitation it) performing a class of work, as to which Mr. Hammond seems to entertain some doubts, and, on the other hand, I strongly condemn a practice which he appears to recommend. I have not the least hesitation in making reports for vendors of mining properties, and am constantly doing so; . the best justification for this practice may be found in the fact that such reports have been repeatedly accepted by buyers as giving a correct representation of the facts of the case, which is all that should be demanded from any report. On the other hand, Mr. Hammond advocates that mitring engineers should take payment for their reports tin shares of a company to be floated upon the basis of such reports. I hold that this is ethically wrong, as even the most honest of men is liable to be unconsciously biased under these conditions. Indeed, I go much further, and maintain that a mining engineer who re¬ports or advises upon mining properties should never hold any-mining shares at all, or be himself interested in any mine,' and this has been my consistent practice for many years. A man who holds shares in a mine, and is called upon to report upon a neighboring property or a similar mine, can never be wholly unbiased, and even if lie could be, he would always lay himself open to the suspicion that he was giving a favorable report so as to-enhance the value of the property in which he himself is interested, or an unfavorable report so as to stifle competi-

This is an era of " expansion; and, conformably with the change in commercial conditions, the function of the mining engineer, as well as that of his confreres in many other professions, has also expanded. From the position of an engineer, limited to the determination of technical questions, the engineer of to-day has come to assume an economic importance in those branches of industry dependent upon engineering skill for their development. He is indeed an engineer of limited usefulness who does not go further professionally than to submit a purely technical report on subjects presented for his consideration. While he has the same responsibility as formerly in the solution of the technical problems involved, he is further expected to supplement his report with advice on the financial and commercial aspects of these problems. For the great majority of problems presented to the engineer ultimately involve the determination of the pecuniary, relations of the propositions under consideration. The great corporation lawyer no longer earns his fee by merely submitting his opinion as to the legal issues involved in law-suits affecting the corporation; he now assumes charge of the entire legal work, including both the organization of the corporation and the maintenance of its legal status thereafter. In like manner, the engineer, whose report was, as I have said, formerly confined to the determination of the geological and other cognate features of a mining enterprise, is now expected, not. only to embody information on these subjects in his report, but also to give his opinion whether the property offered for sale in pursuance of such an enterprise is worth the price asked for it. The æProfit Driver ModelÆ is a tool which builds costs from first principles and integrates revenue, costs and physical mining parameters and, hence, can quantify the impact and leverage on profit. In this paper an æexample mineÆ has been created to represent a typical Australian Open Cut Coal Mine. This has then been input into the Profit Driver Model to allow different variables to be tested. A series of variables were tested to determine which ones had the highest impact on profit and results are useful to management as a guide to the areas in which they can focus effort to achieve better profitability. Whilst the highest profit drivers are those external to the control of management and include selling price and exchange rate, the next most sensitive are those variables related to the geology of the mine and the mining method. These included coal quality, yield and strip ratio. Site management has some control of these. For example, the ability to vary the sequence of mining or improve the yield by a more efficient coal washing process. The efficiency of the workforce and management has similar impact to the mining variables. Finally, there are the supply variables, such as fuel, labour and explosives which are the least sensitive although, cumulatively, still significant. Each mine is different and the results of the example mine will not apply to all mines. However, the approach taken is universal and the tool illustrates a simple method to quantify the profit impact when changing variables. The benefit of the approach is the short time taken to get a set of results. This allows the more detailed and time consuming work to be more focused. The results illustrate that management has a significant influence on profitability.

THE raw material men in all industries, and copper is no exception, are accustomed to think of them- selves as the whole show, and not without justice, for if there were no copper mines the world would have no copper. Nevertheless, many different things costing money and resulting in profits must be done to their product before it is ready for the world's use. In other words, they are making the frequent mistake of Chinking in terms of partial costs. Nobody really uses electrolytic copper. Possibly that is why nobody seems willing to pay anything for it. The manufacturers, being canny, do not buy any more electrolytic than they feel that they can work up and sell profitably, although they like to make the raw material men Chink that they will take all that can be produced. This is a state of affairs that has aroused my sympathy and curiosity, and has induced me to study the financial history of the copper wire and brass industry of the country or such portion of it as publishes any records readily available to the curious minded. DESTRUCTION of the plants, machines, utilities, tools, materials, and other essentials for peacetime living penalizes not only the owners of the materials destroyed, but the world as a whole. Specifically, the fundamental fallacy of any proposal for the in- discriminate destruction of the German industrial system is that it fails to differentiate between the wartime and the peacetime economy of the Reich. We are for one simple, clear objective-an effective industrial means to keep Germany from starting another war. This objective should not be con- fused, especially before the war is even won, with the appropriate punishment of Germany or with the international arrangements for the long future to be made around the peace table by the representatives of the Allied Nations after victory is achieved. This paper, therefore, does not deal with broad, complex postwar questions of diplomacy and international policy. "Unconditional surrender" implies disarmament of the German armies, the surrender of all arms, munitions, air- planes, and other ordnance material in stock piles or in process. It also should include the elimination of all German war production facilities, such as ordnance plants, munitions plants, and submarine works, and the control of raw materials required by war industries.

A DISCUSSION of the developments of the past decade in the field of refractories, and the effect of these developments on the performance and life of open-hearth furnaces, is perhaps best introduced by reference to Fig. 1. This shows the most important types of refractories doing into various parts of the furnace, together with their cost, and remarks on their use. It has been estimated that half of the refractory makers market comes from the iron and steel industry, and something like one-third of all refractory brick used finds its way into open-hearth furnaces. To melt steel, a furnace capable of withstanding temperatures close to 3000 deg. F. is required. The furnace is assembled of various refractory materials selected by experience and economic considerations. Furnace structures today, from a refractory standpoint, are considerably different from a quarter century ago. Furnace operators, interested in the performance of refractories, care little how they are made or where they come from so long as they give reasonable service. But, the entire history of the refractory is important and technical knowledge of the ceramic materials used in making the refractory is necessary to the manufacturers, so that the proper article gets into the hands of the ultimate consumer.

STATISTICAL evidence shows that continued efforts made by Government and industry to make mining safer during the last two decades have had most favorable results. In the copper-mining industry an accident frequency of 146 per million man-hours worked in 1925 dropped 71 per cent by 1945 to 43. This downward trend was relatively consistent except for a high period in 1937 which was probably due to a resumption of large-scale operation with many untrained miners. The iron-mining industry showed a similar trend, but at the relatively lower accident frequency of 66, which dropped to 24 in 1945. The close relationship between the steel and iron-mining industries may be one reason for the lower accident frequencies, because the steel industry is noted for its greater recognition of the fact that safe working conditions are an important part of labor-management relations.

To the advances of this relatively new technology a substantial contribution has been provided by the research being carried out at the University of Cagliari on samples of granite rocks from different Sardinian stone quarries. On the basis of field experiments and laboratory test data, the mechanism of diamond wire cutting has been assessed. "As the cost in time and money of data from sensors and small-scale tests has reduced, additional challenges have arisen. Although many mine data sets are not big relative to those in other disciplines, they are complex in other ways, and becoming too large to manage efficiently on personal computers. In order to take advantage of the opportunity offered by increased data, a diverse team from Universidad de Chile and CSIRO Mineral Resources has developed a virtual geometallurgical laboratory to support the computational requirements linking data acquisition with data-driven business decisions. A particular focus to date has been the development of user-guided workflow ensembles to enable comparison between plausible geometallurgical hypotheses.A case study has been undertaken using publicly available data from the Rocklea Dome iron deposit in Western Australia. A hypothetical mining schedule was produced from geochemical and hyperspectral drill core/chips data via the following steps: data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, geochemical interpolation, block modelling, ultimate open pit design and scheduling. The key outcome of this study was the integration of workflow stages through new plug-in methods or modification of existing software. The performance of the V-Day Mine near Danville, Illinois has been evaluated from data extending over about a 20 year period. The area included in this study involves over 16 acres. Essentially this entire area has progressively subsided. Extensive data has been collected on the geologic and mining conditions, the subsidence movements, as well as on the response of the surface structures to the subsidence. In this paper a detailed summary of the site conditions is given, and the mechanics of progressive failure of the studied room and pillar mine is postulated. These progressive long-term failures of the V-Day are then compared to other similar mine failures in Illinois. Some overall, but tentative, long-term strength evaluations are presented as well.
