JOB OBJECTIVE: What do you want to do? EDUCATION: List degree(s), name of college(s), location(s), and date(s) degree(s) received or to be awarded. Do not list your high school but do include postgraduate education, training, or seminars. WORK EXPERIENCE: List your most recent experience first, and the rest in reverse chronological order. Include dates (month and year) and company names. First show the entire time spent with each employer, then list the various jobs (with dates and duties) you may have had with this employer. MILITARY SERVICE: List dates, branch of service, and duties. If you did not serve, delete this section. COLLEGE ACTIVITIES: Show organizations, sports, and offices held. Only list these if you are a graduating senior, otherwise delete this section. PERSONAL DATA: List age, marital status, height, weight (optional), foreign languages spoken, professional memberships, and health (if good or excellent, otherwise do not mention it in the resume). If you prefer a certain location and would not accept a job anywhere else, list the location desired. Otherwise, do not restrict yourself. Also list special skills, hobbies, or interests that will help sell you to the company. Be brief in this section and use good judgement as to what you say. REFERENCES: Furnished on request. Resume Guidelines There are some things to remember when preparing a resume. These include: • Limit your resume to one page, unless you have a lot of experience. Then it should be a maximum of two pages. • Use 8.5 x 11 plain bond paper, white or off-white. Stay away from colored paper, odd size paper, and cute resumes. They are counter-productive. • Make certain your resume is typed professionally. Be sure to check for spelling, grammar, and typographical errors. • Have your resume reproduced by copier or printing shop. Do not use carbon copies. • Keep your sentences and remarks short and punchy. Use action verbs. • Have a good layout that is easy to read, brief, and uncluttered. Allow some white space in your resume. There are also some things you should not do when preparing a resume. These include the following: • Do not include a photograph or mention your religion, race, or sex. • Do not leave gaps of time unaccounted for in your resume. • Do not include your college transcripts with your resume or list all the courses you took in college. • Do not list all the articles you have written. Only list one or two, if appropriate for, say, a research and development job. • Do not include reference letters with your resume. Any good, prospective employer will make telephone reference checks. • Do not use "Curriculum Vitae," use "Resume." • Do not include unnecessary data such as your social security number, passport number, or PE registration number. If you are a PE or EIT, be sure to mention that in your resume. Do not mention US citizenship or US work permit unless you have a foreign education or are not a native US citizen. • Do not include present salary or salary requirements. This will come out in the interview. • Do not use the word "I" in your resume or refer to yourself in the third person. • Do not lie, distort, exaggerate, or editorialize in your resume. • Do not have your resume prepared by an outside resume service. This is unnecessary, costly, and generally not effective.

Mining is experiencing a difficult period of low profitability and declining productivity. To achieve sustainability, mining companies are challenged with improving output, quality and safety while decreasing costs. At the same time, organisations are having to manage a workforce in which individuals no longer accept a traditional style of management, employees prefer more flexible employment, and diversity within teams is becoming the expected norm.Increasing organisational diversity has been shown to have a positive impact on performance and therefore sustainability. Gender diversity and equality between working men and women is the area most studied in this regard. Executives are becoming more aware of the correlation between gender diversity and performance with some larger organisations having dedicated resources to increase the number and status of women in their organisations. Despite this, limited improvement in gender equality is apparent globally over the last decade with some industries, including mining, going backwards. So why is this the case and what other strategies are available?In 2015, the United Nations Women National Committee Australia (UN Women NCA) in conjunction with Autopia released a white paper discussing the lack of visible change in gender equality despite the widespread implementation of merit-based personnel management strategies. Using research from around the world and thoughts from influential government, education and business leaders, the paper ‘Rethinking Merit’ debunks the myth of the meritocracy. It provides a number of recommendations for organisations committed to improving their performance and sustainability through diversity, including a variety of real-life company examples, instead of relying solely on merit-based decision-making.This paper takes the recommendations of ‘Rethinking Merit’ and applies them to the mining industry. It shows the relevance that rethinking merit has for the industry and why applying the recommendations can result in an increase in diversity, therefore enabling greater performance and sustainability of mining companies. This paper provides case studies from Aurizon, Iluka Resources and BHP Billiton and, as a guide for managers, a generic diversity strategy designed to be implemented alongside traditional merit-based personnel management techniques.CITATION:Hobbs, K, 2016. Many mining wastes, especially those from the metal mining industry, have traditionally been treated as a matter of little or no value and in practice a cost burden. Some wastes, due to their reactivity characteristics, have emergent values that go beyond purely economic and into the environmentally beneficial realm. This paper discusses the changing paradigm of mine waste management. Such fundamental parameters such as cut off grade, and strip ratio, are positively impacted by the revaluation of waste rock material. Mine rock waste can now be seen as a commodity of value, similar to the underlying ore being mined and influences the economic performance of suitable projects. This valuable material can be used for industrial purposes including acid neutralization as well as the capture and long-term disposal of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. The Turnagain Nickel project, located in northern British Columbia serves as an example of how waste rock material can become an important matrix for carbon capture and sequestration and can benefit economically from it. By producing material that has emergent economic value as well as carbon capture and sequestration capabilities, the sequestration matrix producer is a beneficiary of new carbon credits that have a market value and is looked upon favourably by regulatory authorities and affected stakeholders.

During the latter part of 1937 consideration was given to the construction of a; local smelting plant for producing blister copper. Previously copper concentrates had been shipped to the United States of America. The proposition had the advantages of a saving in cost of realization, quicker financial return and reduced dependence on overseas shipping.The smelter was designed by the existing staff, who had difficulty in obtaining data on small plants, particularly on the reverberatory furnace. Construction was started in March, 1938, and the reverberatory was blown in on January 16th, 1939. One roaster had been operating for several weeks prior to this date.While results and operating technique on this new departure in small-scale smelting are barely beyond the experimental stage, it is felt that the experience gained to this time should be recorded to help fill the obvious gap in published information covering plants of this type.At present there are three copper smelters operating in Australia; the other two plants are equipped with blast furnaces.LOCATIONThe new smelter is situated in a position convenient to the concentrator and to the power plant. THE great event in American affairs was the sudden death of President Harding, on Aug. 2, in San Francisco. A few hours later Vice-Presi¬ dent Coolidge took the oath of office while in his father's farmhouse in Vermont and forthwith proceeded to Washington as the 30th president of the United States. The French and Belgian governments' replied to the British refusing the proposed discussion of the German offer and declaring that they would pursue their policy in the Ruhr until the German government abandoned its resistance and surrendered unconditionally. The economic collapse of Germany .appears to be nigh. Chancellor Cuno and his cabinet resigned the govern-ment of Germany on August 12, and Gustav Strese-mann, head of the People's party, accepted the task of forming a four-party coalition government. Coinci-dentally, there were food riots throughout Germany, and many persons were killed and wounded. The , National Assembly of the Turks at Angora ratified the Lausanne treaty, in the latter part of August, whereupon the retirement of the military forces of the Allies from Constantinople and the Straits began. Thus, Turkey was fully reinstated as a European power. The Greek government also ratified the Lausanne treaty and commenced to put its army on a peace basis. The number of unemployed persons in Great Britain is again increasing, which is causing much concern. The flood of crude oil and gasoline, which is severely taxing storage capacity, had its natural economic effect. Some small refiners were constrained to liqui-date in distress. The Governor of North Dakota, having acquired a supply of such cheap gasoline, insti-tuted a drastic cut in price, deliberately egging on the big refiners to do likewise. The Standard Oil Co. of Indiana accepted the challenge with enthusiasm, say-ing that it had always been its policy to sell as cheaply as any competitor. There was a humor in this situation which paved the way for the Standard to extinguish its small competitors and do by invitation of the State exactly what the muck-rakers had always charged as its greatest crime. The gasoline war spread to other states and reductions in price were made even on the seaboards. All of this was purely economic.

Pebble phosphate deposits of Florida have been established from south of Hardee County to north of the Georgia state line or a distance of over 200 miles and mining has been carried out in an ever-increasing scale since 1885. Deposits that can be mined on the economical standards of today, however, are confined in a roughly circular area about 30 miles in diameter, generally within Polk and Hillsborough Counties, in the central part of the State. The phosphate deposit, which is in the Bone Valley formation of the Pliocene age, is covered by Pleistocene terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand. The matrix is composed of approximately 1/3 clay slimes, 1/3 silica sand and 1/3 phosphate pebbles. The phosphate occurs usually as rounded pebbles, ranging in size from about 1 inch down to approximately 400 mesh. The phosphate may vary from well- defined hard pebbles to soft weathered rock. The color and character of the phosphate will range from smooth buff pebbles to black and white or "salt and pepper rock." The screen size distribution varies considerably between locations and the recoverable phosphate varies may extend down to the 400 mesh size in some areas, while in others the phosphate may cut off sharply at about 35 mesh.

Problems connected with the incidence, effects, determination, and control of dusts are still much before the public, although more information is available to the layman than when Bulletin 400, of which this publication is a revision,5 was issued in 1937. Bulletin 400 attempted to assemble information in convenient form on various phases of the dust problem, largely in the mining and allied industries. This revision includes data that have accumulated since 1937 and some that appeared previous thereto but were not available to the authors at that time. The literature on this subject is so voluminous that no attempt has been made to include all published material or all types of dust diseases, but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject.

DURING the past year, as in the preceding ones, prices continued to fall, production to decrease, and more mines were closed. Much attention is being given by the industry to suggested plans for betterment of its position, and if the scheme recently brought out for consolidation of sales agencies into district agencies is loyally carried out, it cannot but help to improve conditions. The progress in the anthracite industry is shown in the report of its chairman, E. H. Suender; changes in coal preparation are outlined in the report of J. B. Morrow, chairman of Committee on Coal Preparation, while increased mechanization of the western mines is described by Eugene McAuliffe, chairman of the Committee on Machine and Strip Mining. In spite of the depression, interest in the Coal Division has been increasing, its meetings have been well attended, and its committees are active and have been doing excellent work.

The Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process (MTMP) process is based on DC open arc metallothermic smelting of calcined dolomite at normal pressure and temperatures of 1650?1750°C. The process was demonstrated at the pilot scale in the period 2000?2004. Major changes to the MTMP pilot plant were made throughout the development period, which lasted for about five years. The changes included design and installation of new equipment, modification of existing equipment, changes in the metallurgical approach in terms of feed rates, feed recipes, furnace operating temperatures, cold and hot dolime feeding, and steady and systematic changes in the operating procedures and maintenance of the plant. As a result, the performance of the pilot plant gradually improved from one campaign to the next, in terms of availability and in particular the condensation efficiency. In Run 10, the process was successfully demonstrated over an 8-day campaign. Keywords Magnesium, condensation efficiency, DC arc furnace, silicothermic reduction.

MAY began with a general strike of the bituminous and anthracite coal miners in the United States in progress, while in Great Britain about three quarters of a million workers became idle by a lockout, caused by a dispute respecting the question of the rights of management in their shops. The employers opened their shops on May 3 to men wishing to resume work, but few availed themselves of the opportunity. Up to this time the statistics had been showing a little increase in the rate of employment in Great Britain and business conditions were considered to be improving. From Russia came reports that the results of the famine had not been so bad as had been prophesied, which is not to say that they were not grievous. In prognostications such things are habitually overesti-mated. Seeding for the new crop has now begun in Russia, with hopes for better results than last year. However, the general economic situation in Russia steadily becomes worse. We had advices during May to the effect that the Soviet Government had decided to abolish the gold ruble even as a theoretical calculating unit and substitute a "goods index." This idea would be somewhat on the lines of Professor Fisher for stablizing the dollar, and there may be a chance to see how it will work in practice. There was a contradictory report from Russia, however, that it had been decided to revert to the gold basis. This is the more plausible report, for if there be anything to be deduced from economic theory and history the present paper rubles will completely collapse and return to gold basis will ensue simply because the people will refuse to sell their goods on anything else. The civil war in China came to a head during the first week in May when General Wu-Pei-fu crushed the forces of General Chang Tso-lin around Pekin. The victor declared his intention to be to reunite the North and the South and in course of time to arrange for a constitutional convention. We probably do not under-stand the conditions in China, but recent events do not appear to have solved the grave difficulties there, though they may be a step toward it. However, the immediate outlook does not appear good, General Chang having retired to the north and declared the secession of Manchuria and Mongolia.

Introduction Zircon is a natural occurring mineral and may exhibit natural low level radioactivity. It contains trace levels (90 to120 pCi/g and 110 to 115 pCi/g respectively or 3.3 to 4.4Bq/g and 4.1 to 4.3 Bq/g) of naturally occurring radioactive uranium and thorium. This mineral is often found in a suiteof minerals (rutile, ilmenite and monazite) Due to the overlap in physical properties of monazite (containing 4–7% thorium) with some of the zircon (slight magnetic susceptibility) it often contaminates the zircon, adding to the levels of thorium in the product. Hazards associated with the products from zircon and its processing is inhalation of respirable dust (generated by milling) containing radioactive uranium and thorium which may cause cancer of the lungs. Legislature regulates the transport, use, workplace environment exposure and storage of radioactive material. In America the general regulation for the unlicensed use of low levels of radioactive materials limits the concentration to 500 ppm (U plus Th). Europe (IAEA) specifies a limit of10 Bg/g (Bequerels per gram) on the parents for transport only which is a higher level of U+Th. Companies selling into these markets need to comply with these regulations and certification is therefore required, not only of the major constituents determining the price, but of the U and Th levels as well. Exceeding the limits for U and Th may result in material being returned to the country of origin. However, for the analyst the requirement is to analyse for these elements throughout the production process as well as the analysis of the ‘tails’ that is returned to the mine area. This requires a wide range of concentration to be analysed. Methods of analysis A wide variety of methods exist for the analysis of U and Th in a range of matrices. (Table I) All these methods have been used with varying degrees of success in terms of accuracy. Overall precision for the different techniques varies from 5 to 25% relative. Time to produce results from these methods vary from a few minutes to several days. The Production Chemist is expected to produce between5 and 10 analyses per hour for process control purposes. A suitable technique that fits this requirement is X-Ray Fluorescence. Both Wavelength Dispersive (WDXRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) instruments are suitable. X-Ray analysis in general has a few major advantages over competitive techniques. •It is fairly simple to set up and interferences are known and easy to correct •It has multi-element analysis capabilities •Clean spectral lines for U and Th (in zircon specifically) •Uncomplicated and easy to measure background •Low detection limits (3 to 5 ppm) •A very high degree of precision •Sample preparation is uncomplicated and fast (pressed powders and fused beads). In Zircon (ZrSiO4) processed sands the matrix is constant(>99% ZrSiO4) and the background is thus essentially constant. Standards As with any other comparative technique XRF analysis relies heavily on the quality of the standards used. Assuming proper set-up and operation of the instrumentation as well as consistent sample preparation, accuracy is determined by the quality of the initial calibration standards. THE plains of southern Alberta constitute one of the classic areas of geological investigation in Canada, for it was here in 1874, and in 1881 to 1883, that George Mercer Dawson (1, 2, 3) made the pioneer observations that are basic to all subsequent work on the interior plains of Canada. Dawson's work was extended eastward by R. G. McConnell ( 4) and northward by J. B. Tyrrell( 5) , but it remained. for D. B. Dowling to re-examine Dawson's Bow and Belly River Area and to make certain necessary revisions in the stratigraphical system of his predecessor. In 1917, Dowling published his memoir, The Southern Plains of Alberta( 6) , which remained for over ten years the last word on the stratigraphy and structure of the area described. It is generally conceded that Dowling's work made known the existence of a great artesian basin beneath the semi-arid plains of southeastern Alberta. In addition, his structural studies greatly stimulated the search for natural gas and petroleum. The most recent general publications on this area by the Geological Survey are based on the field work of M. Y. Williams, E. J. Whittaker, W. S. Dyer, and P. S. Warren, between the years 1923 and 1926. Their results were embodied in the Calgary Sheet (7) and the memoir, Geology of Southern Alberta and Southwestern Saskatchewan (8). By this time, the number of geologists working in Alberta in the development of the petroleum and natural gas industries had become large, and in 1931 the Alberta Association of Petroleum Geologist~ offered the Donaldson Bogart Dowling Memorial Symposium on Stratigraphy of Southern Alberta( 9) , a most valuable series of papers descriptive both of the ,surface stratigraphy and that observed in the well records.

WHEN I leave this life, as an employer of labor there is no one thing that I want so much to be engraven upon my monument as the fact that I have been one of the men who have worked, whether with my brains or my hands, for the advance-ment of industry in the United States, and to be regarded, as I should like to be regarded by labor with love and kindly remembrance for our years of association. In my relationship with my employees, I have always contended that every man should be paid for what he does. I will not employ or be associated with any kind of labor of which the organization insists that a man shall receive a fixed sum of money for his day's wages, however poor or good his day's labor may be. What applies to the common laborer applies equally well to the management, the brains of an industrial establishment. I have always thought of industry as a three-legged stool, with capital, management and labor as the legs. All three legs of that stool must be there before that stool can stand up. If you take any one of those legs away, it is going to topple over. The. three must stand together for successful business accomplishment. I believe that a man who has his labor to sell, to put it plainly, has just as good a right to bargain for the best price for that labor as those who employ him. It is a perfect right for him to do so. If the government of our United States is right, our method of handling labor in our Bethlehem plants is right because it is representative and democratic. We have our labor elect delegates; elect representa-tives from their own ranks, who shall meet frequently. That constitutes, as. it were, the House of our great Congress in Washington, the industrial house. We have our management, who represent the Senate, who meet independently. Working men have learned to express their views freely as to whether they are treated fairly and whether conditions are right or wrong.

"The present and possible future commercial production of potash from various sources in the United Status is discussed below under the following heads:1. Potash from the saline lakes.(a) Nebraska lakes.(b) California lakes.(c) Other lakes.2. Potash as by-product from the cement kilns.3. Potash as by-product from the iron blast furnace.4. Potash from silicate rocks.(a) Feldspathic material.(b) Leucite rocks of Wyoming..(c) Sericite slates of Georgia.(d) Glauconite (greensand) of New Jersey.5. Potash from Alunite.6. Potash from organic sources other than kelp.7. Potash from kelp.In this discussion very little more than passing reference, if any, will be given to those projects which up to date have been developed only slightly, if at all, beyond the small scale laboratory stage, or for the development of which there appears to be very little financial and technical backing at the present time. Nether or not many of these proposed projects have merit can be determined only by an actual operating demonstration.Generally speaking, the potash industry of the United States has been hardly more than marking time since the armistice. This is, largely due to the fact that the consumers of potash have been expecting that heavy shipments of foreign potash to the United States would be resumed soon at somewhere near the pre-war prices, and they have not seen owing domestic potash at present prices for many months. The result has been that domestic producers have been unable to sell their product at even cost and many producers of potash have been obliged to close down. Thu Nebraska lake plants were closed down in February. The California saline plants were operating at below capacity, and the only large alunite plant is closed down. Even the cement plants have little or no inducements to recover the potash being lost in their waste gases and the production is very small at present.This condition will doubtless continue until a definite policy is decided upon as to the future importation of potash salts from Germany and. France. If unrestricted importation is allowed at prices even 50% greater than in 1913, only a very few, if any, of the domestic projects will be in position to compete with the foreign potash immediately, and the present industry will probably greatly decline with little or no prospect for a future resumption of the industry."

"The General Leasing Law, which provides for the leasing of deposits of coal, oil, oil shale, gas, phosphate, and sodium in public lands, was approved February 25, 1920.One of the outstanding features of this legislation is the fact that it opens for prospecting and exploitation lands and deposits which have been withdrawn from public use, some of them for several years, pending enactment of legislation better fitted to control the mining and utilization of the particular mineral deposits referred to. These lands are not only made available to the public, but they are opened up under a system which defines better than was ever done in the pas the rights which may be acquired under it.The oil operator, for example, under this legislation will know definitely the extent of the rights he has acquired, as well as the legal conditions under which his expensive drilling and other work of exploration are to be conducted. No longer will he be harassed by the possibility that while he is spending his capital in drilling operations in an effort to make a discovery of oil, his legal rights be contested, in which event the superiority of his claim can only be upheld -- if at all -- after long and expensive litigation. By the same token the coal operator will now be free from the embarrassing restrictions of the old coal-land laws respecting the amount of such land which may be purchased by one person.At the same time that these advantages are being enjoyed by the operators, the public will be guarded against wasteful methods of drilling and mining the oil and gas, and coal deposits, and the other mineral substances enumerated in the act, to the end that these products of Nature, which can not be replaced, may be utilized with a minimum of loss."

Unfortunately, magnesium was not listed separately by the Department of Commerce prior to the war, among the importations, but was included with other metals, as follows: ""Barium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, and alloys of which said metals are the component materials of chief value."" However, the imports of metals enumerated other than magnesium were probably small, so that the importations under the above caption may be considered chiefly metallic magnesium in one form or another and, therefore, is an approximate gage of the demand for the metal in the United States. These imports were as follows:These figures are so close that they give a good idea of the figures for the respective calendar years.Of this prewar use, it has been estimated that about 85 per cent was used annually and in approximately equal quantities in the production of (1) flash-light powder, (2) fire works, (3) aluminum casting work, and (4) nickel and nickel-copper alleys, such as monel metal, etc. The re¬maining 15 per cent was employed for general uses, such as deoxiding brass and other copper alloys in foundry work, and to a small extent in laboratory and research work."

"The most authoritative compilations on the coal resources of the British Isles are given in ""The Coal Resources of the World"" issued by the 12th International Geological Congress, 1913. The reserve, calculated to a depth of 6,000 feet, in seams containing not less than two feet of merchantable coal are as follows: Mining at present is conducted at depths from about 800 to 3500 feet. The shallower coals have largely been exhausted. The present average hoisting depth probably is about 1500 feet.The thickness of individual beds at present mined varies from about 2-1/2 feet up to 40 feet in thickness, the latter thickness being found in North Staffordshire. The coal is rarely found level, but is approximately level in some parts of Yorkshire. Anthracite is mined in limited quantities in Wales, and Wales also produces a very high grade semi-anthracite or smokeless coal, which is fa famous the world round, and is equaled only by the Pocahontas and New River coals in the United States:As concerns the methods of mining, these vary widely according to the pitch of the bed, the thickness of coal, and natural conditions, but the prevailing method is some form of longwall or semi-longwall, by which all the coal is extracted. The other principal method is a so-called pillar and, stall method, by which the coal is mined out, leaving square or rectangular pillars which are extracted on the retreat, making it virtually, a retreating longwall system. This method is applied where the roof is strong, and particularly in the thicker beds, as the longwall method is not so well adapted for mining where the thickness exceeds five or six feet, unless it is what is called a multiple seam, one in which there are partings of rock that provide material for building walls, which the roof in subsiding gradually squeezes down."
