Western Greece is a favorable site for exploration and discovery of oil fields. The most important potential source rocks seem to be all the rocks deposited before middle Jurassic under special circumstances, such as reducing conditions, which allowed preservation and maturation of the organic material. In general all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene are not favorite source rocks. The porosity type was studied on fifty samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Potential reservoir rocks are the porous Paleogene wackestones-packstones with boring, channel and vuggy porosity type. Finally seal rocks are the impermeable mud-stones and wackestones of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene age. These rocks consist of micrite and whole sells of foraminiferas and the porosity type is mainly intercrystal/interparticle. A Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis, conducted on seventy samples using a wet oxidation method, has revealed an extremely low TOC content (less than 0.05 %). This amount is by far less than the minimum organic content amount, required for source rock characterization and characterizes all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene age. Additionally, 18O and 13C stable isotope analysis was contacted and the results are given in d values. All the rocks within the studied time interval have much lower d values than petroleum source rocks. Clay mineral content was studied in almost seventy samples. As is indicated by the clay mineral content the studied rocks have reached up to the Middle Diagenesis and the temperature during diagenesis was rather low.

Broken rock mass and unreasonable stope structure parameters can cause excessive ore loss and dilution in sublevel caving; this is the main problem faced by caving mining in recent years. This paper proposes a stope structure parameter optimization method suitable for steeply inclined medium-thick broken ore bodies and evaluates the reliability and effectiveness through case studies. To solve the problem of large ore loss and dilution in the high-end wall sublevel caving method of Xilinhot fluorite mine, it is necessary to select proper stope structure parameters. Based on the theory of random media, an end-wall ore drawing experiment was carried out, and the bulk flow parameters needed to optimization of stope structure parameters were determined. In the experiment, it was found the draw-out body of high-end wall ore drawing showed a fine top and a thick bottom; the granular media had good fluidity. The reasonable caving step is determined to be 1.2 m instead of the 1.6 m originally used. Through the optimization experiment of the mining route position along the vein, the study found that the best route position is different with the ore body inclination. When the inclination angle of the ore body was 90°, the reasonable route was located in the center of the ore body. When the inclination angle of the ore body was between 85° and 90°, the route moved from the center of the ore body to the footwall at a rate of 22.5%. When the inclination angle of the ore body was between 80° and 85°, the route moved to the footwall at a rate of 54.8%. When the inclination angle of the ore body is not greater than 80°, the route should be arranged on the boundary of the footwall. Field application results showed the dilution rate reduced by 7.66% and the recovery rate increased by 7.31%. Field test results verify the effectiveness and applicability of the optimized stope structure, which corroborates the effectiveness and applicability of the optimized stope structure.

This paper investigated the ability of eight common hydrodynamic models – tanks in series (TIS); three compartmental model configurations (Comp-1, Comp-2 and Comp-3); advection dispersion (AD); piston exchange (PE); piston exchange-diffusion variant (PE-D) and piston dispersion exchange (PDE) – to simulate residence time distribution (RTD) data generated from tracer tests conducted on a packed bed composed of different size fractions of malachite ore. The chosen materials were packed into 0.1 m internal diameter columns to a depth of 0.155 m and drip irrigated at 5.11 L/ m2.h. The four size fractions tested were: 1 – 2 mm, 2 – 2.8 mm, 4.75 – 5.6 mm and 13.6 – 16 mm. Step-up tracer tests were conducted using potassium chloride. The results showed that an increase in the particle size of the malachite ore had little effect on overall bed porosity but resulted in significantly lower values of liquid holdup. Two of the monoporosity models tested, TIS and Comp-2, were the most affected by the changes in bed size fraction due to their inherent inability to cope with high degrees of non-ideal flow present in the larger particle systems. The dual porosity models performed relatively better with the dominant trend being a reduction in dynamic to total liquid holdup as particle size increased. Of all the models tested, the PDE and TIS models were the best and worst performers respectively, with R2 values averaging at 0.997 and 0.679 across all experiments respectively. Though the Comp-1, Comp-3 and PE-D models also performed well, the addition of the dispersion coefficient to take the axial spread of fluid molecules into account added a layer of complexity that allowed the PDE model to perform relatively better than the other dual porosity models. I speak to you today on the subject assigned to me, "Subsidence - a Real or Imaginary Problem", as a representative of Consolidation Coal Company (a wholly owned subsidiary of Continental Oil Company). The information I relate to you is our experience in the Pittsburgh Coal Company Division of Consol and covers the Pennsylvania properties and mines with particular emphasis on the mines in the south- western portion of the State or in the immediate vicinity of Pittsburgh, Pa. Mining of Freeport and Pittsburgh seams of coal in the Pittsburgh vicinity dates back over one hundred years. Consol, or its predecessor, Pittsburgh Coal Company, has been actively engaged in mining in the area since Pittsburgh Coal Company was organized in 1900. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania came into prominence as the Steel City largely because of the vast reserves of high grade metallurgical coal readily available in the immediate vicinity and also because of its favorable river transportation. Early in the 1900's we operated over 100 small coal mines, with operations located in the Counties of Allegheny, Fayette, Washington, Westmoreland. We have also operated mines in Somerset and Greene Counties. Titles in Pennsylvania can be in three estates: (1) title in fee, (2) title to the mineral, (3) mining rights permitting the removal and extraction of the mineral with or without waiver of surface damage. Consol has over the years acquired good legal title to the coal lands purchased from individual farm owners, with good broad mining rights, and in 98% or more of its title has a complete waiver of surface damage or the right to subside the surface land. In the early days of our Company, individual coal farms were purchased from land owners. Many of these titles severed the coal estate from the in fee title and good mining rights with waiver of surface were conveyed in the original severance deed. Thus, minable coal reserves were put together by the purchase of the coal under many individual farms in an area. In the early years, the mines practiced hand dug mining - later going to mechanical cutting with hand loading of the coal. Systems used were entry driving with room and rib panels. We have practiced full recovery mining as far as practical during the years of hand loading, as well as in the later years when the mines were mechanized. Mining system layouts, methods and procedures have changed from time to time to keep pace with improved mining machinery and new inovations, such as roof bolting and rubber tired haulage.

This paper provides an overview of the patenting process as it pertains to the fields of metallurgy and mining, and summarizes some general patenting strategies. A review of new "green technology" initiatives recently adopted by Patent Offices around the world is also provided.

A brief review of the rapid growth of ACT in Western Canada is presented. It is remarked that this rap-id growth has been accompanied by a heterogeneous approach to design. A more rational and consistent approach is suggested, together with the assumptions on which this approach is based. The operating history of some existing installations is discussed briefly, and conditions necessary for the continued growth of ACT are outlined.

Sulfate balance control is a common problem for zinc plants. Roast-leach-electrowin plants are mostly concerned with the over-generation of sulfates while for the HudBay direct leach plant both extremes are possible including potential necessity to buy sulfuric acid to replenish a sulfate-depleted circuit, which makes the problem doubly important. Quantitative methods were applied at the HudBay plant to analyze sulfate generation/depletion based on a local sulfur balance and sulfate extraction calculation in the leach circuit, using a Pb-tie method. Main factors were established influencing sulfate generation/depletion, including the critical role of Pb and pyrite. Regression analysis proved to be effective and allowed the quantitative prediction of Pb concentrations necessary to reach the equilibrium for the sulfate balance. This in turn provided a firm basis for a sulfate-control strategy realized through concentrate blend correction, which allowed the plant to fine-tune sulfate generation/depletion effectively reducing economic consequences of excessive/deficient sulfate generation.

Sulfide tailings from past and present mining activities are important hosts of critical elements and precious metals. This review paper presented a literature survey on the recovery practices of some critical minerals containing Te from sulfide tailings with a special focus on the physical beneficiation and hydrometallurgical separation methods. Finally, a conceptual framework and possible processing flowsheets were proposed. The findings of this review will be useful for the researchers in the field of geochemistry, mineral processing, and metallurgy to evaluate the separation processes for reprocessing of mine tailings for the recovery of critical minerals.

This report summarizes a systematic 20-year study of the organic sulfur compounds in Wasson, Texas, crude oil and, to a lesser extent, of three other crude oils, that has culminated in some 200 individual sulfur-compound identifications. The development and application of special separation and identification techniques generally suitable for the characterization of sulfur compounds in any crude oil are discussed. This report reviews early sulfur literature covering petroleum sulfur compound identifications completed before this study was begun, and cites 58 papers resulting from this work. The sulfur compounds in petroleum, both as to type and quantity, have long been of concern to the petroleum industry, and such compositional data are not only of theoretical interest, but also of practical value.

Modern smelting systems using continuous, flash and/or oxygen smelting processes have a significant effect on the choice of sulfur dioxide control processes and system arrangements. Based on gases from an enriched air or oxygen smelting furnace and copper converters the paper reviews and analyzes alternate processes and system arrangements for recovery of sulfur dioxide. The work indicates the choice system to include a conventional sulfuric acid plant for converter gas and a liquid SO2 plant to handle the high strength smelting fur¬nace gas. The liquid SO2 plant would be used as a fly-wheel to damper the flow and SO2 concentration variations of the con-verter acid plant. Potential energy recovery alternates and product flexibility are also reviewed.

To our geologists at Eldorado Gold Corporation, the release of the gold assays on a new ore zone causes a flurry of excitement. But to our metallurgists, that news is often greeted with the question ‘What’s the sulfur grade’? In our company, we operate and manage projects whose end-product will either be auriferous sulfide flotation concentrate or gold doré. Almost all of the steps in the ore processing are related to sulfur (in this paper specifically sulfide sulfur). So why do we geologists wait until late in a project or into production before collecting sulfur data for mine planning and ore control purposes?Gold deposits associated with sulfides commonly use a metallurgical process that begins with a flotation step to recover gold into a smaller mass known as flotation concentrate. Often, this step solely targets the sulfide minerals with gold only coming along for the ‘ride’. As a result, the gold grade in the concentrate is primarily influenced by the ratio of gold to sulfur in the feed. Should this concentrate require a refractory process downstream (eg pressure oxidation), knowing sulfur grade is critical as sulfur controls heat balance in the process. Regardless, we need sulfur models to be as robust as gold models, and created much earlier in the project evaluation process.Sulfur models require quality data collected at the same density as gold samples. Analytical methods must match expected grade ranges and quality assurance quality control (QA/QC) protocols and must be of the same integrity as in use for gold. Sulfur models will then be created by their own data analyses, interpolation protocols and validation. Furthermore, ore control systems should be designed for regular sulfur monitoring to ensure and enhance downstream value. Given time it should become habitual for geologists to likewise ask, ‘And what’s the sulfur grade’, or more specifically, ‘What’s the gold to sulfur ratio’?CITATION:Juras, S, 2017. THE basic products of the Company are lead and zinc. Around 950 tons of these metals are produced each day. In the last decade, the production of by-products has increased to such an extent that they are now nearly as large an operation as that of the base-metals. Of the many by-products, the most objectionable, and up to a few years ago the most useless, was the sulphur. The sulphur comes in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is in the ore chiefly as lead, zinc, and iron sulphide. By selective flotation, these three sulphides are separated into the lead concentrates, the zinc concentrates, and the mill tailings. These mill tailings contain the bulk of the iron and the sulphur. Of the 6,5CO tons of ore treated per day, about 5,000 tons are wasted to the mill tailings dump, and, while now valueless, will in future years undoubtedly be used as a source of iron and sulphur. There are about 1,500 tons of sulphur and 2,200 tons of iron per day in the tailings, and about 400 tons of sulphur left in the total concentrates. In the recovery of lead and zinc in the pure form, the first step is the roasting operation. Here, most of the sulphur is driven off as sulphur dioxide in the gases. It has always been apparent that this sulphur should be. recovered and utilized if possible. At the same time, this would cure the smoke nuisance. Because, in spite of the low concentration of sulphur dioxide and the fact that it was discharged from stacks at an elevation of 400 feet above the plant, some damage to vegetation close to the plant had been experienced.

A techno-economic study is in progress, examining process and product options for treating smelter gases containing various concentrations of sulphur dioxide. Key contenders have been examined within an Australian context using the following criteria: * Markets for products * Capital Costs * Operating Costs * Waste streams generated Product options considered thus far are sulphuric acid, sulphur, calcium sulphite and gypsum. The development of an appropriate overall framework for evaluating process and product options is discussed and findings thus far presented. The emerging techno-economic study offers promise as a constructive guide to future policy decisions by industry and government.

This winter I decided to join the other 36 Freeporters who belong to the AIME; and, I applied for membership in the Society of Mining Engineers. To queries as to my interests in the Society, I had this answer: our principal challenge -- more so today, than at any time in my nearly 25 years in the industry -- is discovery and development of new sources of raw materials. I want to join you in meeting this challenge.

Many of the difficulties faced by the U.S. mineral industry in 1982 and 1983 emanated from the worldwide recession, from the high value of the U.S. exchange rate, and, in part, from actions taken by foreign governments to protect selected industries. While some problems will be minimized with continued worldwide economic recovery, others remain and may require special attention by U.S. policymakers. These problems include declining U.S. production capacity in selected mining and mineral processing industries, the impact of the high value of the U.S. exchange rate, and protectionist trade practices by competitor nations. Illustrative of the last is the International Trade Commission (ITC) determination in June 1984 that both the domestic steel and copper industries have been substantially injured by foreign imports. In its July 1984 recommendations to the President, the ITC suggested higher tariffs and quotas for 5 years on 70 percent of steel imports but conditioned the aid on cost-cutting and modernization steps by the domestic industry. In the copper decision, two commissioners recommended increased duties, two recommended that quotas be imposed, and one recommended that no relief be provided. The President decided in September to seek voluntary restraint agreements with nations that export steel to the United States and rejected both quotas and higher tariffs on copper imports. General Economic Setting This decade opened with the U.S. mineral industries struggling to deal with double-digit inflation, record high peacetime interest rates, and almost 7 years of oil-cartel-induced energy price increases that seriously affected the profitability of energy-intensive industries such as mineral production and processing.

Traditional cycle theory would postulate that if you have a supply shortage relative to demand, the price will increase because buyers will incrementally increase the price they are willing to pay to ensure that their needs are fulfilled. As prices rise, more supply will be brought on and will eventually exceed demand. This supply excess will cause the price to decline as producers have to lower their prices to sell their goods. What is interesting is that cycles are simply volatility over time. Without the time factor, volatility simply goes up and down. When we add the time element, a cycle is created. This cycle can be big or small. In mining?s case, we are talking about a Super Cycle ? a big cycle. But a Su-per Cycle can be formed in two ways. It can form by either increasing the wavelength or the volatility. If these two elements are combined, a Super Cycle is formed. It is bigger than the normal cycle in terms of time duration and extent of volatility. A recent study (Fig. 1) conducted by Cuddington and Jarrett showed an interesting proof of Super Cycles and suggests that these cycles last between 15 and 30 years. So, what causes a Su-per Cycle? Is it a convergence of unrelated events or a consequence of related events? In a global community everything is related. Equilibrium theory would also take the position that a Super Cycle is a consequence of events.

The Mungana group of mines, in the Chillagoe district, yielded 334,000 tons of ore giving 31,831 tons of lead, 7,907 tons of copper and 3,228,600 ounces of silver. The Girofla mine produced approximately 220,000 tons of ore, and with the Lady J ane mine supplied most of the ore from this centre. The deposit was discovered in 1888, but active development did not commence from the main shaft until 1898. A subsidiary of the New Chillagoe Railway and Mining Co. Ltd., the Mungana (Chillagoe) Mining Co. Ltd., worked the mine from 1902 until 1914, selling copper, copper-lead, lead ores and fluxes to the smelters at Chillagoe. The smelters stopped operations in 1914 when the richer ores of the Girofla had been worked out and production from the Lady Jane had ceased due to heavyground and fire. The Girofla shaft was 823ft. deep with a cross-cut at 810ft. At the 710ft. level contour drives had delineated the orebody, which had been stoped about 10ft. above the level. Except for flux ores which had been stoped only for favourable smelter tariffs, the orebody was practically exhausted above the 610ft. leveL Under company ownership the mine yielded 139,265 tons of an average grade of 4.QlYr copper, 16.2% lead and 12.5 oz. per ton silver.In 1921 the Queensland Government re-opened the mine and worked it until 1927. The North Lode (Fig. 2) was discovered almost immediately at the 100ft. level and was worked down to the 410ft. leveL The ore from this branch and the completion of the stope at the 710ft. level yielded about 80,000 tons of ore averaging 0.4 copper, 9.8 lead and 7.8 oz. per ton silver during this period.

This paper explores recent industry training programs and lessons for supervisors. The Belbin Team Role model was used to increase participants’ awareness of behaviour and its application. The application of the Belbin model to underground, open cut mine and quarry supervisors is discussed.The key to team success may rest with the expertise and experience of its members, but increasingly effectiveness depends on how team members understand, acknowledge and support each other’s behavioural strengths. Discovering strengths is a challenge, both for their measurement and for the encouragement of team members to use the knowledge of themselves and others in the team. Using behavioural models provides a constructive approach and a language for supervisors as they build personal motivation and engagement.Prima facie, the mineral industry’s work may be too vigorous for teams and their managers could be more prone to use ‘solo’ or traditional management styles. Managers and supervisors must know when work allocated to a team is appropriate or where individual effort should be applauded and rewarded. For practical people with well-developed technical skills, improving the soft skills necessary for a supervisor requires some reflection and effort. The Belbin behavioural model can be an effective tool for recognising characteristics that can assist teams to be more productive.Experiencing the Belbin Team Role model as part of an industry qualification is important for supervisors studying to refine their team leadership skills. Data are available for participants to assess the nature of their teams and to confront the appropriateness of the behavioural mix for the work of the team and its individual members.So what are the next steps? All team development must have a place in the strategic thinking and plans of the enterprise.
