The iron ore mining industry is currently going through an adjustment from high to more moderate growth as China’s economy transitions from capital-intensive investment to a more services-oriented economy. We are now witnessing a renewed focus on productivity improvements and cost savings as planned expansions are completed. Despite the scale and importance that the mining industry plays in the global economy, innovation literature is generally more targeted at faster-moving industries with shorter innovation timeframes and lower capital requirements. To fill this gap, VCI set out to understand the state of innovation in the mining industry in 2014. This State of Play report aims to give an objective appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of innovation in mining. The report has three sections covering both the structure and delivery of innovation in mining:Ecosystem – focused on understanding how the iron ore mining innovation ecosystem system works, including the roles of large and small miners, service companies, researchers and governments. Our recommendations focus on what is required for the system to work well and improve the level and quality of innovation in the industry.Strategy – how do companies define their innovation strategy in relation to their corporate strategy? How are these related to prevailing global and industry trends? How do they communicate this with their business? How successful are they? These are among the questions that this section attempts to answer. Our recommendations are pitched at the executive leadership of iron ore mining and service companies.Delivery – focused on how companies develop and deliver innovation, looking at the success of different structural options, leadership and culture, partnerships and the best approaches to change. Societal expectations about how the industry operates and treats its people will be a key driver in the development of the Australian mining industry over the next 20 - 30 years (Moffat, Mason and Littleboy, 2009). Understanding these expectations will be critical in maintaining what much of the minerals industry calls its 'social licence to operate', or its public acceptance or approval. Yet what constitutes this social licence is poorly articulated, with little published research exploring the concept at a local operational level or at the national level in Australia or internationally. This research aimed to explore the societal expectations of the mining industry in Australia and test a participatory methodology to articulate them. Three workshops were conducted with a sample of 24 members of the 'Australian voting public' to explore community objectives for the onshore exploration and mining industry, and the underlying expectations for how the industry should operate in the future. Qualitative analysis of this data revealed three overarching objectives for the onshore mining industry held by participants. They thought that the industry should: advance Australia's national interests (including social well-being); minimise environmental impact, and; act in a socially responsible manner. Within each of these three key themes, or objectives, a number of tensions were evident in the views of participants regarding the trade-offs they are willing to make to secure economic benefit from mining, as well as the basic conditions for socially acceptable mining. These data provide an insight into the conditions for a national social licence in Australia for the mining industry, and the means for its realisation.

"The United Nations, through the secretariat of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and its Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Harmonization of Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources Terminology, developed the Framework Classification.The UN Classification applies to fossil energy and mineral reserves and resources located on or below the Earth's surface. It aims to simplify reporting of energy and mineral reserves and resources in a globalized world and is intended to improve global communications regarding remaining quantities of non-renewable fossil energy and mineral resources. The UN Classification is not recognized as a Foreign Code under NI 43-101.SECTION I1.,The United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC-2009) applies to fossil energy and mineral reserves and resources located on or below the Earth' s surface. It serves the needs for classification at a global level (for energy and mineral supply studies), for governments (resources management and policy formulation), for industry (business process management) and for financial reporting.SECTION II2.,The UNFC is a generic system in which quantities are classified on the basis of the three fundamental criteria of economic and social viability (E), field project status and feasibility (F), and geological knowledge (G), using a numerical coding system. Combinations of these criteria create a three-dimensional system. Categories (e.g. El, E2, E3) and, in some cases, sub-categories (e.g. E1.1) are defined for each of the three criteria as set out and defined in Annexes I and II.3 The first set of categories (the E axis) designates the degree of favourability of social and economic conditions in establishing the commercial viability of the project, including consideration of market prices and relevant legal, regulatory, environmental and contractual conditions. The second set (the F axis) designates the maturity of studies and commitments necessary to implement mining plans or development projects. These extend from early exploration efforts before a deposit or accumulation has been confirmed to exist through to a project that is extracting and selling a commodity, and reflect standard value chain management principles. The third set of categories (the G axis) designates the level of confidence in the geological knowledge and potential recoverability of the quantities.4. The categories and sub-categories are the building blocks of the system, and are combined in the form of ""classes"". The UNFC can be visualised in three dimensions, as shown in Figure 1, or represented in a practical two-dimensional abbreviated version as shown in Figure 2."

IN any manufacturing business, it is of vital importance that the management should know the exact cost of the units of production. Without such knowledge, a company can sell blindly in the open market, obtaining the best prices it can in competition with other firms, and manage perhaps to continue in business for a time; but at any moment, and especially in a period of falling prices, such a firm is at a loss to know exactly at what point it can sell at a profit and exactly how much it is losing per unit if it sells below that point. Furthermore, it is necessary not simply to know the exact total cost per unit, but to know definitely all the different-factors which enter into that cost. A firm manufacturing pocket knives had been doing a profitable business for many years when it began to earn smaller and smaller profits, until there was scarcely any profit at all being realized. Being unable to determine exactly what its future policy should be, it called in experts who studied the past records carefully and followed out for a period a better cost, system. Investigation then showed that on several different kinds of knives in common use, a small profit per unit was being made. On a number of special kinds of knives, of which the firm was very proud, it had been forced to cut prices under the pressure of outside competition and had believed that a small profit per unit was still being made on that product, while a detailed cost analysis showed that a loss was being incurred on each knife of that kind produced. It then became clear that the company must either give up the special line and concentrate wholly on the cheaper knives and extend their sales to territory not yet developed; or expand its plant and produce more of the higher grade knives and thus lower the cost per unit enough to make money on the higher grade knives also, if conditions warranted such expansion. Investigation revealed that the market for large quantities of the high-grade -knives was decidedly uncertain and that the most promising move would be to manufacture only the less expensive knives on a larger scale. That plan was carried out and the concern began again to make a better profit.

The use of aircraft to support blasting operations in mines, quarries and construction sites goes back to the early days of aviation. Invaluable at times, aircraft use has been limited by cost, the unpredictability of weather impacts and other factors. Recently several technologies have matured to open up a new way to acquire aerial data with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly called drones. Equally important, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has recently implemented an exemption process and rulemaking to implement the commercial use of UAS into the United States’ National Airspace. The skies are opening for many applications of UAS. The most notable may be photogrammetry, which is the science of making measurements from photographs, especially for determining the exact positions of surface points.

"By the end of the 1950s, the German hard coal mining industry produced 150 million tons of hard coal per year in 170 collieries with 600,000 employees. At that time, 70% of the primary energy demand of the Federal Republic of Germany was covered by domestic coal. However, due to coal mining becoming an increasingly globalized business and the oil and gas industry producing with lower costs, the German domestic hard coal industry stood constantly under restructur-ing pressure. The industry declined until the end of its life cycle. In 2007, a political understanding was arranged to phase out German hard coal mining in a socially acceptable manner by the end of 2018. This decision required a new strategy for the coal mining industry. Being strictly finalized, the German hard coal mining industry has to be prepared for the post-mining era. To create a sustainable development strategy, the long-term impacts of coal mining activities in Germany concerning the environmental, economic and social dimensions will be analyzed systematically and forward-looking. The regional and social responsibility during the closing process and for the post-mining era will be emphasized. High technical standards in environmental protec-tion and post-mining technologies, as well as long term experiences in the development of former mine sites to create new jobs are significant from an international point of view. The traditionally constructive social partnership between employers, union, and employees has enabled long-term stable adaption processes and avoided social friction. The sustainability strategy of the German hard coal mining industry can be regarded as a role model for other mining countries and regions facing similar transition challenges. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining is a finite business that reaches its end if the deposits are depleted or the raw materials can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way. However, the impact of mining is po-tentially an infinite one – at least if you measure it at a human time scale. Mining always means interfering with geological and ecological structures that cannot be reversed to their original condition. In general, the mining cycle (Figure 1) can be divided into three phases: 1. The exploration phase, in which the deposit is investigated to determine its technical and economic profitability. The period of these undertakings is relatively short and can lead to the launch of mining operations. 2. What follows is the actual mining phase which usually lasts for a long time and ends latest when all deposits are fully depleted. This lifespan may be shortened if the economic conditions (production cost or market price) deteriorate. Nevertheless, mining may be resumed if those conditions become favorable once more (examples are silver mining in Germany or rare earths mining in the USA). 3. The longest phase, however, is the post-mining phase as the human interference into geology and nature is usually inten-sive and irreversible. Mining can lead to consequences which have a permanently adverse impact on people and the environment; therefore, they have to be managed as best we can (1)."

Design of cost effective engineered solutions to complex problems requires the team efforts of the owner, the designer and the specialty construction contractor. The basic ingredients of success required to remain competitive and still produce a quality product are creative design based on experience and sound engineering principles, plus practical aspects of constructibility. The three case histories describe creative design/construct approaches that benefited all parties. 1. Introduction The increasing demand placed on specialty contractors to provide cost effective buildable solutions to complex construction problems compels us in the industry to be highly innovative. The practice of geotechnical engineering is considered more of an "art" than perhaps the other disciplines within civil engineering largely because of the basic nature and variability of soil and rock. The geotechnical design engineer must have the knowledge of the components of his design and know the limitations of his equipment and labor force. Thus, for the design/build specialty contractor the potential for creation of unusual solutions to difficult problems is quite high.

Coal producers and utilities depend on automated coal blending systems to reduce costs and meet stringent environmental regulations. Over 30 systems installed in the United States since 1987 use on-line PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) analyzers to accurately control the blending process. Experience and detailed engineering are required to integrate real-time data produced by the coal analyzer with a control system to meet demanding performance specifications. This article reviews successful installations and lists important features including interfacing analyzers with plant control systems, specifying feeders and weigh scales, and managing data.

The mining of coal in Alaska receives special treatment in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 1977 (PL95-87). Section 708 of the Act required that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) perform a study of "Surface Coal Mining Conditions in the State of Alaska, In Order to Determine Which, If Any, of the Provisions of the Act Should be Modified with respect to Surface Coal Mining Operations in Alaska'. The special committee on Alaskan Coal Mining and Reclamation of NAS completed their study in 1980 and prepared their report (NAS, 1980). At this time, the Secretary of the Interior and the Congress have taken no special action with regard to either special regulations geared specifically to Alaska or to submitting special draft legislation to the Congress requesting amendment of PL95-87. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has drafted legislation which was submitted to and passed by the 1982 session of the State Legislature. The State regulatory agency has also drafted the requisite regulations necessitated by the amendments to the State's Basic Coal Mining Act. It is expected that by mid 1983 DNR will have applied for "primacy" to the office of Surface Mining, U.S. Department of the Interior (OSM). They will be submitting the amended State Law, the revised State Regulations and an operational plan as called for by OSM regulations. The presumption is that primacy will be granted to the State of Alaska under PL95-87. The Usibelli Coal Mine continues to be the only operational commercial mine for coal in the State of Alaska. It produced 7.26 x 10 kg (8 x 10 " T) of coal during 1981. The current mine was started in 1920 by Captain Lathrop, an early developer and pioneer in Alaska. It was continued by Emil Usibelli and was taken over after the death of E. Usibelli (in the 1964 earthquake) by his son Joseph Usibelli who is the current President of, the firm3 Their latest improvement is a 27.5 m (36 yd. )Bucyrus-Erie Dragline which handles most of the overburden removal. The coal is removed by a loader-truck combination. They are currently starting up the use of a unit train loading facility which handles forty cars every two hours. This loading system was a development necessitated by the Sun Eel Export contract. The Alaskan Railroad was a major cooperator in the development of the first unit train loading facility in Alaska.

The Upper Waimangaroa mining permit is part of the Buller Coalfield and lies on the eastern side of the Stockton-Denniston Plateau. The mining permit area is estimated to contain a total in-ground coal resource of 58 million tonnes, contained within 13 separate coal resource .blocks. The coal is Bituminous High Volatile B rank with export potential as semi soft coking or thermal coal. The Northern Opencast mine is the first mine proposed for Upper Waimangaroa and consists of the three resource blocks at the northern end of the permit area. The highwall of the mine will cut into the Mt William Range resulting in overburden cover of up to 150 metres in some areas. The ability to rehabilitate the area after mining was a major consideration in the design of the mine. The Northern Opencast area has been geologically mapped, extensively drilled and effectively modelled using Vulcan software. Three distinct coal seams are present and the mineable in situ resource is estimated at 8.7 million tonnes of which approximately 7.1 million tonnes is likely to be recoverable. It is proposed that this resource will be mined using opencast methods and the void will be backfilled with overburden. The life of the mine is at this stage estimated at 19 years based on an annual production of 500,000 tonnes at 1.8% sulphur and the Upper Waimangaroacoal will be blended with low sulphur coal from the Greymouth Coalfield to meet export specifications. The Northern Opencast area contains a range of native flora and fauna and physical features which make it an environmentally significant area. Mining will totally modify the area, thus an effective rehabilitation scheme is an integral part of the mine plan. Various rehabilitation methods will be used, and wherever possible, the backfilled areas will be rehabilitated so as to resemble the original area as closely as possible.

"The Carswell structure, located in the western part of the Athabasca Basin, northern Saskatchewan, has been extensively explored since 1967. This exploration has been successful and lead to the discovery, in 1970, of the D sandstone-hosted unconformity related deposit. By the end of 1984, five additional basement-hosted unconformity related deposits had been delineated: the OP and N discovered in 1970, the Claude in 1971, the Dominique-Peter in 1981, and the Dominique-Janine in 1984. The D deposit has been mined out; the Claude open-pit has already produced more than 500 tonnes of uranium, the development of the Dominique-Peter underground mine (first phase) has been completed, and production from the latter started in 1985.All six deposits are located in the southern part of the Aphebian metamorphic core, 18 km in diameter, which has intruded at least 1250 metres of Helikian Athabasca Group sediments during a cryptoexplosion event at 480 Ma, unrelated to the emplacement of uranium mineralization. The metamorphic rocks, affected by the Hudsonian Orogeny, are divided in two lithostratrigraphic units: the Peter River gneiss, aluminous gneiss series, and the Earl River complex, mixed quartzofeldspathic and mafic gneiss series. A well developed regolith profile is recognizable in the south along the contact with the sandstone and inside the metamorphic core sometimes associated with conformable sandstone beds.Basement and sandstone-hosted uranium deposits show many similarities:-linkage to unconformity;-mineralogy and geochronology with a first phase mineralization characterized by a polymetallic sulphide-uraninite-brannerite assemblage dated at 1150 to 1050 Ma, a second phase characterized by a simple sulphide-uraninite assemblage dated at 890 to 820 Ma, and a third phase characterized by a pitchblende-hematite dated at 380 Ma; and,-linkage to early Hudsonian structures with remobilization of these structures during intense hydrothermal alteration resulting in Mg chlorite-illite halos."

On June 25, 1876 Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer led the Seventh U.S. Cavalry Regiment., comprising 31 officers and 637 enlisted men, into the valley of the Little Big Horn River in southern Montana. His assigned mission was a reconnaissance-in- force to locate the Indians reported to be assemblying in that area. Custer was extremely successful in locating the Indians. Unfortunately he located more than 3000 Cheyenne and Sioux under the leadership of the great war chiefs Crazy Horse and Gall. Custer's entire battalion of more than 200 men was annihilated; there were no survivors. While I don't seriously suggest that things will be all that bad in the uranium industry, I do suggest that some very fundamental changes have occurred in the uranium market. Conventional thinking based on past truths will no longer suffice. Geology, economics, politics, nuclear growth pat terns, technology, and utility attitudes have all changed. New thinking is in order. It is at this point that I would offer my usual disclaimer. My views regarding the future are simply that--my personal views. My belief that certain events will come to pass does not mean I view those events as appropriate, wise, good, equitable, or economic.

The automation (robotization) of coal mining activities at the face offers improvements in worker safety and productivity. The evolutionary introduction of autonomous, intelligent robotic machines to perform the most hazardous tasks may become a reality within the next 10 years. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Robotics and Automation research program is aggressively pursuing the development of the enabling technology necessary to achieve this goal. This program consists of both core and applications research, each focused on the fundamental issues of robotic technology. In the short term, the research is directed specifically to the robotization of present-day underground equipment and is being performed in a manner that can make incremental improvements in safety and productivity. The long-term goal is the development of intelligent autonomous mining systems.

President Reagan may be "a nice guy," but he is "misinformed, misdirected, and misadvised," when the subject is the state of the US copper industry, according to Sen. Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ). DeConcini took the opportunity as keynote speaker at the Arizona Conference AIME in Tucson to fire a few salvos at the Reagan Administration's industrial policies. "American copper used to stand above the rest of the world," he said. Now 21,000 copper workers, about half of the total, are out of work due to less expensive foreign imports. "Those 21,000 are real people, not statistics," he said. US production has been cut to one-third of its capacity, he said. And the Administration shows no signs of changing its position to favor US copper protection. "Third world copper towns are booming," he continued, "while ours are dying." Regardless of profits and despite oversupply, Chile continues to produce, he said. And, while US mines continue to close, "the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is handing more than $1 billion to six copper producing countries." President Reagan wanted $8.6 billion from the IMF. "I'm damn mad about it," DeConcini said. "For the life of me, I can't understand how this Administration can stand by while this industry is brought to its knees." Last year, the International Trade Commission ruled that imports were injuring domestic copper and recommended relief. The President, DeConcini said, vetoed those recommendations. DeConcini softened his tough talk a bit saying the President's image makes it difficult for people to not like him or stand up to him. "How can anyone stand up to President Reagan?" he asked. "He's such a nice guy. But it's time someone did. He's just misinformed, misdirected, and misadvised. We must take real action and we must have a president who understands this." DeConcini said he has introduced legislation aimed at helping domestic copper. It would limit copper imports to 385 kt/a (425,000 stpy). Imports now stand at about 635 kt/a (700,000 stpy). The bill would also impose a $0.33/kg ($0.15-per lb) duty on foreign copper. DeConcini called the duty a sort of "environmental equalizer" because that is the amount domestic producers must spend on pollution control devices. Foreign competitors do not have such controls, he said. "I face people who are damn mad that this country is being pushed around," he concluded. "It's time we stand up and say we can be competitive. If they (foreign countries) put an import duty on our stuff, we will do the same. It's time this country stopped being the nice guy." As if to underscore domestic copper's desperate situation described by the Senator, Duval Corp. announced about the same time as the meeting that it has nearly closed its eastside office in Tucson. Staff has been reduced from 120 to four. Spokesman Dean Lynch said the four will consist of President A. Everett Smith, a secretary, a person in environmental affairs, and another in purchasing. Duval is also selling an office and a laboratory in Tucson. Pennzoil Co., Duval's parent, has been trying to sell the company for more than a year. It began dismantling Duval in November 1984. Pennzoil took over its subsidiary's profitable sulfur operation in Texas, sold the New Mexico potash facility, and spun off gold interests in Nevada, forming Battle Mountain Gold. Northwest Mining Association - Spokane Rock Jenkins, Associate Editor The true role of minerals needs to be realized by both the policy makers and the people of the US, according to Robert Dale Wilson, director of the Office of Strategic Resources, US Commerce Department. In addition, a re-thinking of the theory of free trade and competitive advantage is necessary. Wilson made his remarks in December at the opening luncheon of the 91st Annual Convention of the Northwest Mining, Association in Spokane, WA. At a later press conference, Wilson said one of the mining industry's main problems is that its presence in Washington has been reduced in the past few years. Part of this can be seen by events within the American Mining Congress (AMC), he said. "The problem with AMC," Wilson said, "is that in 1981, when Reagan came in, no problems were seen for mining and a lot of their (AMC's) lobbyists were let go." He

The United States contains one of the world's largest reserves of uranium. Domestic production and exploration activities, however, have declined since the early 1980s due to weaker-than-expected growth in nuclear power demand and to foreign competition. The main result has been that more costly and less productive conventional mines and mills have closed. Meanwhile, industry productivity as measured by uranium output per employee has increased threefold since 1980. At the end of 1992, only six plants, all nonconventional, were operating in the United States. Due to cost considerations and increased environmental awareness, any additions to existing capacity are expected to be met through nonconventional in situ leach plants.

ACC ECOSAND is finely powdered crystalline silica, which can replace natural sand usage in concrete and plasters. ACC ECOSAND ensures a comparatively denser concrete than those made only with natural sand and / or quarry fines / Manufactured Sand (Artificial Sand). Moreover, there is a significant gain in compressive strength (10-15 %) & durability in concretes (Reduced chloride conductivity leads to increased durability). ECOSAND is a by-product of froth flotation of limestone. At ACC Madukkarai cement works, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, full-fledged mineral beneficiation process is adopted to enhance the usage of flotation reject in concrete and plasters. Optimum level for usage of ECO-SAND is 50%. With 50% usage of natural sand+50% ECO-SAND in concrete mix, 1 day, 3 day, 7 day & 28 day compressive strength is increased by 30.1 %, 22.6 %, 15.1 % & 11.0 % respectively and with moderate chloride permeability as compare to 100% Natural Sand. Electrowinning is a key process for copper production contributing roughly twenty percent globally and thirty to forty percent of production in the Americas1. Copper grade is assessed largely on deposit smoothness and on level of impurities in the metal. Smoothing aids are essential to create dense, low porosity deposits and guar has long been the material of choice for this purpose. Guar is, however, poorly stable under the strongly acidic electrowinning conditions, underlying ongoing research to identify an effective, acid-tolerant replacement. Current efficiency is also a critical factor in controlling copper production costs and chemical additives should ideally improve current efficiency as well as improving deposit smoothness.

COAL'S importance in the metallurgy of zinc may be gauged by the fact that approximately a million and a half tons is so employed annually in the United States. This brief paper will show in what way the various steps in the treatment of zinc ores utilize this fuel, either in its primary form or as coke or gas, and to what extent. The first step in zinc metallurgy that requires the use of fuel is roasting the sulphide ore, which is the type of ore in which zinc commonly occurs. Since the roasting is nearly or completely autogenous, however, this use of fuel is too minor to warrant further attention. Concentration of zinc ores is usually carried out by conventional milling methods, but a pyrometallurgical method, the Waelz process, is used to concentrate certain low-grade ores, and to recover the zinc content of certain residues in concentrate form. "Many porphyry copper deposits of the Kerman copper province in central Iran are associated with a consistent structurally con-trolled main drainage pattern, which is shown in this paper to be a useful regional prospecting tool in the search for new deposits. The main drainage trends also generally allow the distiction of high-grade (>0.2% Cu) from low-grade (<0.2% Cu) deposits. Topographic maps1:50 000 or geologic maps 1:100 000 have been found suitable for identification of promising drainages.IntroductionTrends of the main drainage systems transecting the high-grade porphyry copper deposits of the Kerman Region in Iran coincide with Quaternary age regional faults and fractures. Observation of such drainage trends can expedite regional evaluation prior to field examination. Thirty deposits located in the Kerman Region (Fig. 1) have been studied to identify common features that can be used for exploration purposes, especially for the first stage of regional exploration. A variety of field criteria are available for subsequent rapid field checking prior to trenching and more costly methods such as drilling, etc.Characteristic geomorphic features have been considered as aids in mineral exploration by many authors (e.g., Faniran, 1971; Piotrovski and Lubkashov, 1976; Verstappen, 1983). Clark et al. (1967) indicated the relationship between geomorphology and the supergene enrichment of copper in Atacama Desert, Chile, and correlated three periods of supergene enrichment with three periods of pediment disection. Seeland (1978) used fluvial drainage patterns for uranium and hydrocarbon exploration in the Wind River basin, Wyoming. Postolenko and Konopleva (1973) used the reconstruction of ancient valley systems for exploration of gold placers"

Application of some by-products of the metals industry which contain plant nutrients to agricultural lands could constitute resource recovery instead of costly disposal. Some industrial by-products contain appreciable concentrations of heavy metal contaminants, such as Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb. After land application, these metals may be absorbed by plants and enter the human food chain or be leached to groundwaters. Plant uptake of these heavy metals varies with plant species:, soil pH, soil texture, and the particular metal. Certain leafy vegetables can absorb significant amounts of heavy metals, while absorbed metals are usually poorly translocated to cereal grains. Allowable heavy metal concentrations in fertilizers now are not regulated, but EPA is considering such regulations. Heavy metal impurities in animal feed supplements are regulated by the states; so some by-products may not be permitted for this use.
