Orebodies of the Renison Bell - Mt. Bischoff tinfield in Tasmania are stratabound, conformable lenses of massive cassiterite-bearing pyrrhotite, with underlying discordant, fault-fracture-controlled and more siliceous ore. The deposits occur in eugeosynclinal, trough-deposited sedimentary and mafic volcanic rocks which are stratigraphically equivalent to diff erentiated volcanic rocks that contain volcanogenic massive base metal sulphide deposits in a parallel arc to the east. Textures of the massive pyrrhotite ore suggest that it has undergone metamorphic recrystallization. Although the massive ore contains both monoclinic and hexagonal pyrrhotite, a study of a few samples from one orebody suggests that their distribution is stratigraphically controlled, with the monoclinic variety abundant only at the base. The distribution pattern of rare-earth elements in massive ore is similar to that of volcanogenic massive base metal sulphides in New Brunswick, and suggests that mixing of sea water with exhalative hydrothermal brines occurred during ore deposition. Tin is a common accessory element in many volcanogenic massive base metal sulphide deposits providing strong evidence that it, too, is transported and deposited by volcanic affiliated hydrothermal brines. Sedimentary rocks containing the massive orebodies are fine grained, thinly laminated, compositionally banded and of mixed chemical sedimentary-tuffaceous origin. They include finely recrystallized chert, carbonate-rich and pyritic varieties; and soft sediment deformation structures in these rocks suggest that dense sulphides deformed underlying, less dense chert prior to lithification. Close to ore the chert becomes massive and coarsely recrystallized, as does the carbonate, which is here strongly enriched in Fe and Mn. Apatite is present in pyritic, cherty and carbonate-rich beds and in the ore itself, in all of which it shows a similar pattern of rare-earth element distribution, suggesting that it is of marine sedimentary origin. These deposits have traditionally been considered as epigenetic replacements of favourable carbonate horizons by hydro thermal flu ids derived from later Devonian porphyritic intrusions. Some of these intrusions have associated tinbearing greisens. The above relationships suggest, alternatively, that, like massive base metal sulphides, the tin deposits were of original syn-sedimentary origin. Circulating hydrothermal brines generated during early Cambrian eugeosynclinal subsidence and tectonism rose through steep fault-fractures, there giving rise to the discordant orebodies, and were discharged on the sea floor, where the massive pyrrhotite lenses were precipitated with the associated cherts and carbonates. In some places, Devonian intrusions remobilized the earlier deposits, forming greisens and newepigenetic veins. Finally , the geologic selling of these deposits, in trough deposited sedimentary and mafic volcanic rocks, suggests another favourable environment for massive sulphide exploration which is quite different from the domal felsic volcanic environment so heavily favoured currently in North America

The EVINOS-MORNOS tunnel project with its 30 km of length is one of the longest hydraulic tunnel in the world realised with TBM method. The adverse geological conditions, the high cover and the short construction schedule were a great challenge for the successful construction of this tunnel. The paper will describe: the criteria adopted for the tunnel design, the selection of the construction methods and equipment, the productions of the 4 TBMs adopted and the comparison of the behaviour of the different type of TBMs in the various rock conditions, including special conditions, the characteristics of the adopted in situ and precast linings, a comparison between the foreseen and actual construction schedules, the contractual implications of realising a tunnel in such a severe and complex conditions.

La planta de lixiviación, extracción por solventes y electrodeposición (L-SX-EW) de Southern Perú es una operación hidrometalúrgica dedicada a la lixiviación ácido – bacteriana de los botaderos de mineral de baja ley de la Mina Toquepala, para la producción de cobre catódico de la más alta pureza. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe la evolución del sistema de control y supervisión de esta planta minera en Cuajone. Para ello, dicha planta debe tener una actualización constante de sus sistemas de control y ser capaz de cambiar con la velocidad a la que avanza la tecnología de Control de Procesos. Asimismo, debe contar con personal calificado que permita el desarrollo y modernización de los sistemas sea continuo y no dependa solo de expansiones y ampliaciones ejecutadas por especialistas externos. De forma que este software de supervisión, no solamente considera la capacidad de operar la planta, si no debe ser una ayuda tanto para el operador como para brindar información en la correcta toma de decisiones.

India is endowed with a reasonably large reserve of chrome ore, amounting to about 100 million tons in different grades and is one of the leading producers of ore/concentrate along with South Africa, Kazakhstan and others. Chromite production in India has registered a 10 times increase during the last 30 years. Till late 1940s, the practice was to mine the high-grade ore for making ferrochrome and charge chrome and export the same leaving the low and medium grade ores stacked around the mine as waste material. This practice was continued for quite some time till the increase in world wide de-mand of chromite initiated an increase in production of chromite ore in India and the aspects of ?economy of operation? and ?conservation of mineral? dawned on the producers and associated authorities. Recovery of chrome values from low and medium grade ore was initiated to produce high-grade saleable concentrate. Suitable legislation was made by Government of India to induce and provide incentives to the operators to do so. First large scale chromite beneficiation plant in India was commissioned about three decades back at Byrapore in the Southern state of Karnataka. The ore, rather simple in nature and relatively free from clay, was obtained from underground. The processing consequently was simple washing and wet tabling. Further more, some test work, on the samples from eastern coast particularly from Orissa, was carried out at an internationally reputed laboratory by a large private operator and the plant was set up. This consisted of a combination of crushing-grinding-de-sliming-classification followed by concentration in multi stage spiral concentrators and shaking table. The plant was commissioned and operated successfully. Soon a state owned company followed suit on the basis of test work carried out in a well equipped Indian laboratory. The plant worked satisfactorily after some initial teething trouble and the company plans to double the existing plant capacity by installing balancing facilities. This development prompted a number of operators, including industry leaders to join the fray and the chrome ore processing industry flourished in India. More and more operators are now in the process of adding capacities to their existing plants. This paper attempts to chart the evolution of chrome ore beneficiation industry in India through a case study with reference to an existing plant. The process technology adopted and modified to suit the altered requirements as well as the future trends are outlined.

"For mining operations globally, the scale and criticality of the grinding mill drive has meant that selection of the correct mill drive technology is paramount. With so much depending on the successful implementation of the electrical drive system— safety operation, timely installation, availability, energy efficiency, minimum maintenance and extend its use as tool to assist during mill liner exchange—customers are justified in their scrutiny and slow adoption of new drive technology. From the first installation of low, fixed speed synchronous motors to the introduction of the current source and further voltage source variable frequency drive, innovations require long periods of time and mining customers willing to push the industry forward. In recent years, the variable frequency drive has been the stepping stone for a new generation of mill drive technology. In use for decades in other heavy industrial applications, the drives allow for system optimization in a myriad of ways. The most dramatic of changes is in the design of the motor. Where in the past motor design was bound by line frequency, today the designer can optimize machine size and, more importantly, eliminate the need entirely for the synchronous motor. Induction motor design has now progressed to the point where low speed operation is possible at efficiency levels nearing those of the synchronous design. Moreover, the simplicity of the squirrel cage design means that availability, reliability and spare part requirements are greatly improved. As the next step in the evolution of large pinion driven grinding mills, the low speed induction drive offers a new reliable and robust system to the market.IntroductionAs deposit grades continue to decline, new ways of processing ever greater concentrator throughputs have been required to maintain throughput efficient and profitable operations. Furthermore, the high risk nature of mining developments requires a constant search for safer, higher availability and more efficient equipment design. Limitation of downtime is a key factor in ensuring mining operations can be sustained through volatile market conditions. Often processing the entire mine throughput through just 1 or 2 lines, the crushing and grinding circuits are of particular criticality to the uptime and, thus, profitability of any mining operation."

The historical progression in installed electric furnace smelting capacity of some 1650 calcium, chromium, manganese, nickel and silicon ferro-alloys furnaces is reviewed. Key increases in the inherent installed electrical capacity, often achieved through uprating furnaces, are identified. Possible factors facilitating such advances are explored, including: specific process engineering and pyrometallurgical enhancements (e.g., improved control over the consistency, size and chemical form of raw materials, extents of preheating and pre-reduction delivered into the furnace; and patterns of feed distribution); furnace electrical configuration (AC or DC; immersed, submerged-, shielded- or open-arc); form of electrode (graphite, self-baking or composite); furnace configuration (circular or rectangular; closed or open and 1-, 3- or 6- electrodes); better engineering and equipment designs (e.g., high-intensity cooling) and state of furnace electrical and metallurgical control systems. A view is presented on the prevailing state of evolution of the Mega-scale in ferro-alloy smelting and opportunities for still further improvements.

Wollastonite, a calcium metasilicate, derives its name from the man who discovered the mineral, Doctor William H. Wollaston, an English scientist. OCCURENCE Occurences of the mineral have been noted in Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Mexico and in the United States in Texas, California, Arizona, and New York. The only commercial deposit now being exploited is at Willsboro, New York. It is mined and processed by the Cabot Corporation whose home offices are in Boston, Massachusetts.

One of New York City?s largest subway projects is under way 43 m (140 ft) beneath the surface of downtown Manhattan. The East Side Access project, more than 30 years in the making, was halted after a partial excavation in the 1970s due to a lack of funding. The project, once dubbed the ?Tunnel to Nowhere,? has been revitalized into a groundbreaking subway line that includes unique tunnel boring machines (TBM), construction methods and muck removal systems. Project overview The East Side Access project involves construction of a new 6.7-km (4.2-mile) subway line needed to relieve heavy traffic congestion between the boroughs of Queens and Manhattan. The line will serve approximately 160,000 commuters daily between Grand Central and Sunnyside rail stations. Manhattan and Queens will be connected under the East River by the 63rd Street tunnel, a submersed double-decker tube. The submersed tube consists of reinforced concrete sections barged in place on the riverbed. The tube contains operational subway lines on the top deck, while the bottom deck (the ?Tunnel to Nowhere?) will become operational when the East Side Access project is completed in 2013.

Companhia Paraibuna de Metais (CPM) is presently pursuing a zinc production expansion project. Besides increasing production, the goal of the project is to address existing problems while providing a platform for a proposed twofold increase in production in 2003/2004. Therefore, the current expansion strategy was formulated to address present and future requirements. Computer simulation modeling and full scale plant testing are being used to generate data to optimize the operating conditions and to perform a sensitivity analysis. The initial phase of the project, which will boost CPM's capacity to 86,000 t/y of marketable zinc, is to be completed in September 2000.

In December 2009, the Italian High Speed Rail Network AV began running over the full 1000 km system length from Turin, at the foothills of the Alps to Salerno, on the seacoast south of the volcano Mt. Vesuvius. It runs through Alpine rivers, highly seismic active zones, mountains, river plains, and through some of the most densely populated areas in Europe as well as some of its most expensive real estate. The Italian High Speed Network?s technical/economic constraints and its regulatory/socio-environmental concerns well may mirror similar obstacles set to confront the nascent California High Speed Rail Program. The two types of constraints must be dealt with together to reach the best construction solution. It is estimated that more than 20% of Italian High Speed Rail Network costs were spent on ground engineering including over 150 km of tunnels, 200 km of viaducts and bridges and 650 km of embankments and trenches. However, it also is estimated that 25% of costs were spent on social and environmental integration of the new rail lines including over 6 square miles of green offsets, 160 km of anti-noise walls, and 300 agreements for socio-environmental work. This paper will look at four examples of innovative ground engineering solutions, each with its own intricate set of constraints: ? As the mining landscape continues to transform, the challenge of accessing deeper orebodies quickly and safely is becoming a frequent topic of conversation amongst those in the mining industry. The rapid development of underground mine entries to gain earlier access to deeper orebodies is an ever-present challenge to mine owners and contractors. Overcoming this and providing economical solutions to unlock the value in these deeper deposits is a challenge that should be confronted.In 2013, Redpath Australia Pty Ltd (Redpath) commenced construction of what would be the first of two drifts excavated through the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.The excavation and development of the two drifts (declines) was completed as part of a contract for underground mining services between Redpath and Anglo American at the Grosvenor Coal Mine Project in Central Queensland, located approximately 5 km north of the town of Moranbah. Having recently completed the drift development, this paper will extend on the early writings of Donnelly, Ramage and Donghi (2014) and provide detail on the operational achievements, advance rates, threats, opportunities and learnings during the excavation of the two declines: the conveyor (CV) drift and the transport (M&M) drift.CITATION:Ramage, G, Donghi, M and Barnes, A, 2016. Absorption, emission and reflection techniques for the study of [molten] inorganic materials at high temperatures have been critically examined. In general, the reflection technique is the most satisfactory for tine study of pure materials, while the absorption, and possibly also the emission techniques, may be useful for studies of certain dilute solutions. In the present investigation infrared emission spectra for sodium nitrate and silver chloride were obtained together with absorption spectra derived from reflectivity data by the method of Robinson and Price for sodium nitrate, silver chloride, lithium and potassium fluoride and their 1:2, 1:1 and 2:1 mixtures and for solutions of zirconium tetrafluoride in lithium-potassium fluoride (1:1) and sodium-potassium fluoride (1:1). It is concluded that vibrational spectroscopy cannot give unambiguous information concerning the existence of complex ions in fused salt, mixtures.

A lot of dust is produced in iron and steel enterprises, giving rise to serious environment pollution, with which all countries are trying to find methods to deal. The influence of relevant technological factors on dephosphorization was investigated in laboratory, and the effect laws of that were analyzed. The results demonstrate that, in the given conditions of the best slag-metal proportion for hot metal dephosphorization is 1:10, and the optimum temperature is 1350 , The phosphorus distribution ratio of dephosphorization agent containing converter dust of 30% has the maximal value, with dephosphorization rate reaching 85%. Under the optimal conditions, premelting dephosphorization agent can significantly improve the ability of dephosphorization, dephosphorization efficiency increasing to 92%. Therefore, the dust can substitute the oxidant and fixative of dephosphorization agent, be used in hot metal dephosphorization, to enhance the efficiency of utilization.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The complex exemplifies a class of olivine-rich, platiniferous ophiolite complexes generated by unusually high degrees of hydrous melting above a subduction zone. Crystallisation of abundant olivine from unusually picritic magmas produced an exceptionally thick sequence of crustal dunite cumulates. Significant (1-4 ppm) concentrations of Pt+Pd occur where sulphide-bearing dunites are spatially associated with podiform chromite concentrations. In the area north of the Balta Sound, the chromitites appear to lie in distinct stratigraphic zones. A detailed programme of lithogeochemical and soil-rock interface geochemical exploration led to the intersection by diamond drilling of three stratiform horizons of sulphide-bearing dunites and associated precious-metal mineralisation. Patterns of cryptic geochemical layering, at scales from 200 m to less than 1 cm, suggests open-system fractionation

INTRODUCTION. This paper is a discussion of a part of the mineral wealth of the States of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. It does not refer to the precious metals, some miles of which, in these States, are said to have been worked before the advent of the Spanish conquistadores in the sixteenth century, as my purpose is to invite attention to the exploration of deposits of coal and iron-ores in the Mixteca region. The prominence given to coal is warranted by the great effect of the scarcity of fuel upon the industrial development of Mexico. Under the progressive administration of President Porfirio Diaz, the Republic has made wonderful advances in the past three decades; and this progress would have been greater but for the limitations imposed by expensive fuel. In the spring of 1906 I was detailed by the Birkinbine Engineering Offices, of Philadelphia, to accompany A. B. Adams, of New York, in a reconnoissance of reported deposits of iron-ores in the State of Oaxaca. The result of this expedition was the formation, in 1907, of the Oaxaca Iron & Coal Co., of which Mr. Adams became, and has remained, President and General Manager, and I have spent the past three years as Chief Engineer of this company in Mexico, principally in western Oaxaca, where field-headquarters were established. "This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2016 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY), and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2016 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2016 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals, (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash) and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2016 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data and government-funded exploration activities."
