Fankou Lead-Zinc Mine produced pyrite concentrate (P.C.) from the zinc tailings by rougher and scavenger flotation before 2010, with the averaged S grade of 40.54% at recovery of 79.34% ( to the feed of S circuit). On the one hand, the economic value of P.C. increases with its purity, on the other hand, when the S grade of P.C. feed to sulfuric acid manufacturer is over 47%, the pyrite cinder can reach a high Fe grade of 62% which can be directly sold as iron concentrate. On this background, engineers in Fankou Mine set the P.C. with S grade of 47% as target. The direct way to reach that goal was to clean the rougher P.C.. Lots of cleaning flotation tests were conducted and the compromised strategy was to produce two ranks P.C. with the S grade of 47% and 38% at the recovery of 44.20% and 36.17%, respectively. The dual-product flowsheet was successfully industrialized in 2010. In order to further improve the quality of P.C., gravity separation was introduced into the flowsheet. The numerical simulation and separation tests were performed to evaluate the beneficiation and classification performance of hydrocyclone as it treated the rougher P.C.. It was shown that the underflow of hydrocyclone could addressed the S grade of 47%, and the finer size overflow could also be enriched to P.C. with S grade of 47% by flotation, due to the contained pyrite with well liberation. That is to say, with the ingenious addition of hydrocyclone to treat the rough P.C., single P.C. with S grade of 47% could be achieved. The new flotation-gravity separation flowsheet was commissioned to produce the high quality P.C. at the end of 2013. The averaged S grade is 47.20% at recovery of 82.26% in 2014. The two steps flowsheet improvement maximizes the enterprise benefits and leads to simple utilization of Fe in pyrite in downstream industry.

The management of waste materials in the aluminum industry is as important as in other basic industries. Due to the high value of the-by products of the melting process and their toxic properties we took the challenge to develop a process technology to reduce the environmental impact and to help industry to get a better yield of their by products/raw materials. In melting operations metal losses due to oxidation are nearly unavoidable, the amount of such losses, however, can be controlled. Aluminum dross actually is a by product and any shop would like to get rid of it in the most economic way. This by product still contains up to 70% valuable metal! In the present work we describe possibilities to separate metal and residues for further processing. Recycling of metal concentrates, selling of dross and dumping of the residues have been the typical solutions up to now. But there are technologies available which are designed to reduce the waste to a minimum or even avoid it altogether. Such alternatives are processing of the dross into materials which can be reused in other industrial processes in order to avoid any dumping. This can be done by separating the metal and the residues by centrifuging and further use of the residues in the chemical or refractory industry. ECOCENT means economical and ecological recovery of aluminum by centrifuging of hot dross. This process, developed by FOCON Austria, is based on the idea of treating the hot dross as quick as possible in a single operation to avoid exothermic losses, intermediate storage and unnecessary handling as well as to save energy. In the ECOCENT process the hot dross is fed without any fluxing salt additions into a converter where the relevant parameters for separation, like temperature and viscosity, will be adjusted. Further big lumps of dross are ground into smaller pieces in order to improve the later separation of the metal. After homogenizing and adjusting the temperature, the hot dross is poured as quickly as possible into a centrifuge. In the ladle or alternatively the mould of the centrifuge the centrifugal forces are used for the separation of aluminum from aluminum oxide, the major constituents of dross. The separated pure metal can either be discharged liquid or as solidified aluminum ring. The design of the device for the production of liquid or solid metal is almost identical. As soon as the centrifuging is finished the liquid aluminum can be poured back into the furnace or can be used for ingot pouring. After the pouring of the metal the "dry" residues are removed just by turning the ladle. Alternatively the aluminum solidifies in the mould and is discharged as a compact ring. The separation of the residues from the aluminum ring is automatic. Due to the batchwise operation the composition of the metal is the same as in the skimmed furnace of origin. The complete treatment cycle needs about 40 minutes. The recovery rate of aluminum is better than 90% of pure metal. This technology is highly flexible by its nature and can easily accomodate various operational requirements. The consumption of energy is more than 50% lower compared to conventional dross processing as the ECOCENT process is using the inherent energy of the hot dross. These extremely good results are not dependent on the aluminum content of the dross even from very dry dross most of the metal can be recovered. The main advantages compared to conventional dross processing are the high recovery rate, the known analysis of the metal and the immediate reuse of the recovered aluminum. The high recovery rate and the pure metal result in a short amortization period. The compact ECOCENT unit needs a minimum of space since extensive handling can be avoided. The electronically controlled process needs no cooling water and is simple, safe and environmentally sound. The residues are free of fluxing salts, their content of metallic aluminum is low and the environmental problems are thus greatly reduced.

Difficulties and costs of transport markedly affect Canadian mineral producers because of distance from markets, weather conditions and rugged terrain. The chemical and physical nature of sulphide concentrates presents additional difficulties in handling and transport, resulting in higher costs which are ultimately borne by the mineowner. Troublesome properties include the thixo-tropic character of wet concentrates, freezing, susceptibility to autogenous heating, and fine particle size causing spillage and dusting losses. Canadian mineowners and shippers must contend with these problems and with stringent regulations governing the maritime shipping of concentrates. A "systems approach," in which complementary techniques in materials preparation, handling and transport are integrated, could reduce freight costs and losses for those selling concentrates, facilitate operations for those carrying and handling them and, in some cases, improve metallurgical processes in smelters receiving them.

Farce Mining of Texas is a surface coal mine located in Laredo, Texas. Farce mines and sells approximately 600,000 tons /year of bituminous coal. A map showing the location of Laredo is provided in Figure 1. As shown, Laredo is located on the border between the United States and Mexico. The mine property runs to the Rio Grande River, the border between the two countries. Farce pumps water from the Rio Grande for use in their coal preparation plant. Laredo’s climate is quite dry with annual rainfall averaging about 12” per year. Also, due to the southern location, Laredo is quite hot. It is common for the temperature to reach 100” F in March and maintain these temperatures through September.

The processors of Florida phosphate rock face constraints similar to those of other mineral operations--leaner ore, more complex treatment schemes and a product which sells for a penny a pound. IMC Fertilizer is a dominant producer in this market with its current operation of five processing plants. An emphasis by their management in maintaining and improving plant performance has continued unabated for some 15 years. This has resulted in a commitment to the importance of routine automatic sampling of product and in process streams, the generation of reliable assay and size distribution data, the accurate measurement of process flows, and the computerized "rendering" of this information into weekly and monthly material balances which provide consistent measures of process performance. In addition, there has been a parallel program to monitor and improve the performance of flotation reagents and to evaluate process modifications or changes in equipment. This paper will describe the evaluation techniques that have evolved over this period and indicate how the historical data base is used to identify plant problems early and help in their solution.

Much has been said and written about the need to reduce South Africa's dependence on gold. To compensate for the decline in the country's foreign-exchange earnings resulting from the phasing out of gold, which must inevitably occur at some future date, a far higher priority will have to be placed on the mining, beneficiation, and export of the 59 other mineral commodities produced in South Africa. The basic strategy of the mining and metallurgical industries should be to move from the traditional approach of establishing a resource base to the establishment of a market base; to turn from production orientation to market orientation; and to rely less on exploration and economies of scale and more on process innovation and product development. The enthusiasm, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment of the leaders in the mining and metallurgical industry will clearly be of decisive importance in the establishment of new industries for the beneficiation and export of added-value mineral-based products. The State can make a significant contribution by the provision of a welldeveloped and efficient infrastructure, including rail and harbour facilities, communications and health services, roads, and of electricity and water supplies. In our search for a new development strategy for the beneficiation and export of South Africa's minerals, we need to recognize that no one nation has all the mineralresources that it needs. Commercial and strategic manipulation of mineral supplies should no longer be tolerated. The future of the human species lies in international cooperation and in a greater understanding of the limitations of the world we live in.

Hidden under picturesque Bemic Lake, in Canada's eastern Manitoba, lies a highly fractionated pegmatite orebody, hosting a unique assemblage of minerals. Accidentally discovered in 1929, the orebody had a brief history as a tin producer, but it is now mined by Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Ltd. (TANCO), for its cesium, lithium, rubidium and tantalum bearing minerals. The mine also has potential for mbidium-feldspar, amblygonite, gallium rich mica, and quartz production. This paper describes the geology of the orebody, and its mining and processing. Selective, concurrent, mining and milling of the various products necessitates a high degree of planning and control, and these aspects are also discussed. The introduction of Quality Control and SPC are discussed, for such are the keys to excellence.

An economic simulation model was developed to predict the amount of copper recovered from copper oxide deposits and the cost of producing it as a function of the deposit parameters. The economic simulation model includes models of fragmentation design and cost, copper extraction, solution distribution and recovery, effluent solution cutoff grade, and financial analysis. Cost and price indices were also developed to evaluate the economic feasibility of in situ leaching operations as a function of their starting date. Application of the models to various properties having the same area and different ore thickness shows that the effluent solution cutoff grade does not vary with the ore thickness nor with its grade. The percent of copper recovery is, however, shown to increase with the increase in the ore thickness and is independent of the ore grade. it is also shown that while the profit per unit of extracted copper increases with the increase in ore grade or ore thickness, the rate of return on total investment does not show any correlation

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Platinum-group minerals (PGM) in the enriched zone at Dust Mountain occur in two separate parageneses, the first representing primary magmatic PGM and the second primary magmatic PGM that have been reduced to alloys during serpentinisation. Minerals in the first group were unaffected by hydrothermal alteration on account of their textural setting or stable chemical composition. Despite substantial alteration of the serpentinised assemblage, most evidence points to the dominant role of primary magmatic processes in determining PGM occurrence. Several base metals have nevertheless been introduced hydrothermally. With respect to surficial dispersion the single most important paragenetic factor was the reduction of sulphides to alloys, rendering them more susceptible to mechanical erosion and less so to chemical leaching. Mine closure planning integrated into life-of-mine (LOM) planning during the operational phase consists of many subcategories. One of these subcategories that needs to be fully integrated into the LOM planning is that of water management planning. Issues arise when mine water management infrastructure, which is required post-mine closure, is only considered closer to the end of LOM. Once the mine is closed monitoring is focused on water quality as an indicator of closure performance, hence inadequate upfront post-mining water management planning or integration into operations will result in environmental harm. The lack of considering post-mining water management is not uncommon in LOM planning. Poor mine site water management and planning are a wide reaching problem for the mining industry. Numerous active mines have been issued with environmental notices and penalties for contaminated water discharge; including issues with abandoned mines now being cared for by governments all over the world.Mitigating sources of water contamination caused by existing and closed mine sites that are leaching pollutants might be impractical, due to inaccessibility to the contaminants or final landform topography. The opportunity to consider and introduce post-closure required mine water management infrastructure is lost once the waste facilities are constructed. Mitigating contamination is made more problematic with mines located in remote areas, serviced by dedicated roads, water supply, electrical supply, etc. It is expected that these services will be decommissioned or drastically reduced, once closure is reached making remedial work much harder. Inadequate planning, to ensure access and easily maintainable water management infrastructure, could lead to erosion and contamination going unnoticed. There are numerous examples of poor mine water management practices in Africa, Asia, Australia, South and North America. In the United States more than 23 000 km of streams are affected by pollution sourced from some 50 000 abandoned or mature mine sites (DeGraff, 2007).CITATION:Boshoff, H J J, ?2014. INTRODUCTION The $645 million financing for Inco Ltd's Soroako nickel project in Indonesia not only represents a significant human achievement but also there are certain important lessons that can be derived from Inco's experience in financing the project. The paper will not present a technical assessment of the project since Inco Ltd. submitted a series of papers on this subject at the international Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of the AIME in February 1979. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SOROAKO PROJECT Table 1 summarizes the milestones achieved in the Soroako project and its financing. Exploration Phase A contract of Work was signed on July 27, 1968 by the Republic of Indonesia and F.T. International Nickel Indonesia (P.T. Inco) covering an extensive area of over 25,000 square miles on the two southeastern arms of the island of Sulawesi. The Contract provides that P.T. Inco has the sole responsibility for financing the project and determining the terms on which the financing should be obtained, that P.T. Inco has the right to receive and hold outside of Indonesia foreign exchange revenues and to freely dispose of such revenues, and that Indonesians have the right to purchase up to 20% of the equity of P.T. Inco over a period following start of production. P.T. Inco began field investigations in the Contract Area in August 1968. Preliminary reconnaissance sampling with portable drills broadly outlined areas of favorable laterite terrain which were then systematically sampled on surveyed grids. By early 1971 sufficient exploration work had been completed to indicate that the laterite deposits near Soroako could sustain a major nickel-producing plant (figure 1). Pilot plant studies in 1970 and 1971 at Inco's research station in Port Colborne, Ontario, using two bulk samples of Soroako ore material, also confirmed that the ore could be upgraded and treated for the recovery of its metal values. Feasibility Phase Encouraged by the results of its exploration program and pilot-plant work, Inco Ltd. commissioned Toyo Engineering Company of Japan in August 1971 to prepare a capital cost estimate for a relatively small nickel project called "Stage I". Stage I was to be a single-line pyrometallurqical process plant with an annual capacity of approximately 15,000 metric tons of nickel contained in 75% nickel sulphide matte (see Figure 2). Electric power was to be supplied by a thermal power station. It is important to recognize that Inco's strategy was to develop the Soroako ore deposits in several stages: first, construct a small project to gain experience and to reduce the initial capital outlay and then later expand in one or more steps to a much larger project to achieve maximum economies. The strategy reflected both Inco's financial position in 1971 as its sales and earning dropped sharply and the difficulties previously experienced by Inco in trying to launch in the late 1960's very large "greenfield" nickel projects in New Caledonia and Guatemala. Toyo's Project Development Study was completed. in January 1972. Based upon Toyo's cost estimate for physical facilities, Inco estimated the total capital cost of Stage I to be $115 million. For the next several months, Inco ran numerous in-house financial feasibility studies, using as inputs Toyo's cost estimate and the results of its exploration and pilot plant programs. In September 1972, Inco completed a project feasibility study which was based upon a capital cost estimate of $135 million. The feasibility study was immediately made available to potential partners and lenders. Partner Negotiations The Japanese nickel market had from the outset been central to Inco's planning for the Soroako project. To one with so little experience in matters pertaining to currency, international finance, and foreign trade, this is surely an ambitions venture on my part. However, this is a subject of prime importance to all seriously minded Canadians and, if we are to obtain any clear understanding of the factors involved, we must study the facts and debate such points as may remain at issue. During the last few years, the world' s better known economists have described the gold standard in all its ramifications and in such detail as to leave many of us even more confused than before. If we, then, are to acquire any real conception of its meaning and use, I think we must reduce it to its fundamentals and start from there. To my way of thinking, gold in ? trade and commerce is the symbol of honesty. When you seek to discharge a debt by tendering paper you hand the recipient an I.O.U. which may or may not be good, for the purchase of goods or services to the extent of its face value. When, however, you discharge a debt by the payment of gold, it constitutes a complete and final discharge. There are no reservations - no ifs and ands - and the transaction is definitely closed to the satisfaction of all concerned. Gold, then, is evidence of accumulated and transferable wealth that is immediately acceptable in practically every part of the world. However, there is not nearly enough gold to meet the demands of world trade, and. many years ago this deficiency gave rise to what we now describe as our banking system.

It has been known that after initial pile driving, pile capacity gain over time (set-up) could constitute a significant portion of the total pile capacity. In the past, there has been very little guidance for incorporating pile set-up capacity in design. This may be due to large uncertainties involved in predicting the pile set-up. A comprehensive statistical database is developed to describe the increase of pile axial capacity with time, known as set-up, when piles are driven into sand. Based on the collected pile testing data, pile set-up is significant and continues to develop for a long time after pile installation. The statistical database shows that a lognormal distribution can be used to describe the probabilistic characteristics of the predicted set-up capacity using Skov and Denver?s equation. The main objective of this paper is to incorporate the set-up effect into a reliability-based Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of driven piles in sand. A First Order Reliability Method (FORM) is used to derive separate resistance factors that would account for different degrees of uncertainties associated with the measured short-term capacity and the predicted set-up capacity from the proposed semi-empirical equations. The incorporation of set-up effects in the LRFD helps improve the prediction of the total capacity of driven piles, resulting in more economical design. A practical design procedure within LRFD framework to incorporate the pile set-up effect is outlined at the end of the paper.

Carajás is one of the largest open pit mines in the world. The mine is comprised by a haul road network more than 100 km long, where the need for good roads is paramount and determining of the truck performances. This work integrates, regarding the ultimate pit design, an approach to consider an economic value to an originally unfit material, assuming it has the appropriate characteristics for haul road construction, which sometimes lies over economic iron ore. This measure demonstrated an improvement in the utilization of resources and guarantee the necessary material to the haul road design and Mining Pads maintenance.

ShouSteel Mining Ltd., a subsidiary of ShouSteel (Group) Co., was founded in 1959 and is located in QianAn City in Hebei Province, China. ShouSteel?s pelletizing plant uses iron ore as a raw material combined with limestone, dolostone, or olivine, with bentonite as a binder. After mixing the raw materials and forming them into small, spherical balls, ShouSteel then fires pellets in kilns for hardening. The company sells the finished pellets as raw materials for blast furnaces used to produce industrial metals such as iron. ShouSteel?s handling capacity is approximately 24.5 Mt/a (27 million stpy) of ore. The company?s production capacity is 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of oxide pellets and 560 Mt (650 million st) of sinters. Until recently, ShouSteel Mining had not replaced its electronic scales in its series of ingredient chambers. Because of the wear and tear on these older scales, the weighing system began to encounter regular problems. The company experienced a high failure rate from the integrator, an unstable signal, weak anti-interference ability and low accuracy. ShouSteel also found that spare parts required during repairs were consistently high in cost and that system calibration was becoming increasingly frequent.

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." ACIDIZING, as the terns is used in the petroleum production industry, involves the use of hydrochloric acid in predominantly limestone formations, resulting in the lowering of resistance offered to the flow of oil and gas through the oil-bearing formation, usually with resultant increased production. A number of articles have been written on the chemical treatment of oil and gas wells; a bibliography of these works will appear in Volume 123 of the Institute's TRANSACTIONS (1937), and a few other references are appended to this paper.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) become law April 5, 1644, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program bulletins were published on a pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to Hither the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable, collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material is presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Belgium, French, German, Italian, and Swedish Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1963 and 1955. Some of the Foreign Patents were collected at the same time and a few of them later in 1961. Part I was published in 1960; Part II was published in 1962.

THE development of the natural resources of any district of any magnitude, inevitably gives rise to many problems off title, usually due to the greatly enhanced value of the land. The development of the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency has been no exception to this general rule. Our problems, how-ever, have not been many or particularly serious. The Quapaws were allotted and patents issued by the United States Government in 1895. These patents contained a restriction against alienation for a pe-riod of twenty-five years. The effect of the restric-tion was to prevent the Indian from selling, leasing, or in any way encumbering his land. The Govern-ment, in a paternalistic spirit, sought to teach the Indian thrift and industry and to insure him a place of residence. This is evidenced by the first Leasing Act passed by Congress, which permitted only incom-petents and those physically disabled to lease their land for either agricultural or mining purposes. The able-bodied Indian was denied the right to lease. It soon became apparent to the Government, how-ever, that this was a mistaken policy, and in 1897 a General Leasing Act was passed by Congress and it was under this act that the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency was developed. The act, reads as follows: "That the allottees of land within the limits of the Qua- paw Agency, Indian Territory, are hereby authorized to lease their lands, or any part thereof, for a term not ex-ceeding three years, for farming or grazing purposes, or ten years for mining or business purposes. And said al-lottees and their lessees and tenants shall have the right to employ such assistants, laborers, and help from time to time as they may deem necessary: Provided, That when-ever it shall be made to appear to the Secretary of the Interior that, by reason of age or disability, any such allottee cannot improve or manage his allotment properly and with benefit to himself, the same may be leased, in the discretion of the Secretary, upon such terms and conditions as shall be prescribed by him. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this are hereby repealed." It was the interpretation of this Act that gave rise to our first serious problems. It will be noted that the Act says that "allottees of land" within the limits of the Quapaw Agency are authorized to lease their land. Thus, the first question was presented by the use of the term "allottee," and the question was as to whether or not Congress intended to limit the Quapaw Indian to the leasing of his own allotment or did Congress mean that the term "allottee" was synonym-ous with "Indian" and intend to give the Indian a right to lease both his allotment and his inherited land and was an Indian without an allotment an "allottee" even though he was a member of the Qua-paw tribe and the owner of the Quapaw land by in-heritance, and not being an allottee, could he lease his inherited Quapaw land under the authority granted in this Act?
