Intricate Network of Winding PathwaysWebster's New World Dictionary defines the word ""maze"" as follows: ""a confusing, intricate network of winding pathways; labyrinth ... a state of confusion or bewilderment"". Webster's does not go on to give an example of a maze, but the dictionary could easily have referred to the taxation of a Canadian mining operation. The uninitiated would almost certainly look upon such taxation as a maze of the most perplexing sort.Twenty years ago, Canada's tax system was really quite simple. It is true that Canadian mining profits were subject to three levels of taxation (federal income tax, provincial income tax, and provincial mining tax), but this didn't pose a problem. Prior to 1974, at least the provincial income tax systems were somewhat the same in terms of rules .and rates, and even the provincial mining tax systems resembled one another. Mining profits were subject to pretty much the same rules, no matter what province or territory hosted the mine. Those were the “good old days” one could even dare to generalize about tax rates without fear of being labelled an imbecile!"

Adopting new technology in drill and blast requires a structured implementation process, as it represents a significant change in a traditionally conservative industry. It involves addressing initially unknown implications. As the problem is not yet acutely felt, developing a market strategy must be approached from the customer’s perspective, considering how the product can optimize their activities or enhance flexibility. To achieve this, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the context of the customers identified in the deployment process pipeline. This paper discusses aspects of introducing wireless initiation technology - the initiation of primers through a magnetic field without physical connections - in Brazil. Additionally, it presents a case study of the application of a structured process of sales with purpose in an underground mine. By identifying key opportunities that were highly profitable for the client, the necessary awareness was created, leading them to recognize the technology as an enabler for exploring their mineral deposits in a new way which allowed a successful change management process. Based on the applicable technique, a preloading project was developed to maintain inaccessible areas with high-grade precharged with the area loaded with wireless primers acting as a temporary pillar and controlling dilution throughout the orebody. Once the excavation of the stope was completed, the pillar was successfully blasted and the material - once considered lost in the original plan as a rib pillar - was recovered after serving its structural function. Through this method, the metallic recovery of the stope increased without dilution losses. Demonstrating economic viability and stablishing the previously unknown technology as a strategic tool for optimizing stope recovery.

Introduction “A Western mine is a hole in the ground owned by a liar. . ." -Mark Twain THE CAPITAL INVESTMENT DECISION Decisions pertaining to a firm's proposed capital investments can have vital short- and long-term consequences on the organization's ability to compete, and even survive.Capita1 investment decisions, in general, center around two fundamental activities: (1) allocating capital funds to specific investment projects or assets, and (2) obtaining necessary financing in such proportion as to increase the overall value of the firm. In essence these activities or decisions describe the science of finance (as contrasted with economics). Fimnce has been described in general terms as the study of how a present, known amount of cash is converted into a future, perhaps unknown, amount of cash (Archer, Choate, and Racette, 1979). Fundamental to understanding the science of finance and the capital investment decision process in general are the basic concepts relating to cash flow transactions, time, income generation (markets), expected returns, and risk. The functions of finance may be segregated into three fundamental decisions which a firm must address: (1) the dividend decision, (2) the financing decision, and (3) the investment decision. These decisions are interdependent and their joint impact on the objective of the firm must be considered. This book primarily addresses the concepts and components associated with the investment and financing decisions as they affect the practice of mine valuation. Responsibilities of Management A primary assumption incorporated in this book is that the fundamental objective of any firm is to maximize its value, or wealth of its owners (stock- holders). Here, the term wealth refers to the total current market value of the firm's assets. In the case of corporations, the wealth or value is considered to be represented by the market price of the firm's common stock. The price of the firm's common stock obviously will be affected by its investment, financing, and dividend decisions. Consequently, an optimal combination of these three decisions should maximize the value of the firm to its stockholders. It is important to point out that wealth maximization is a more appropriate and inclusive goal for the firm than profit maximization. Indeed, there is a difference between the two objectives in most situations. For instance, a firm can always raise profits by selling stock and investing the proceeds in treasury bills or certificates of deposit. Definition An industrial mineral, says the Glossary of Geology, is "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metallic ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones; one of the nonmetallics." Probably most geologists and engineers would accept this simple and straightforward definition, at least as a general statement. On analysis, however, certain anomalies crop up. For example, it may be considered arbitrary to include industrial diamond and corundum and to exclude their precious varieties, gem diamond and sapphire. So the present volume has a section on gems and gem materials, in spite of the definition. Another problem arises when we try to define precisely what is metallic and what is nonmetallic. Bauxite and ilmenite certainly qualify as metallic ores, but both are also raw materials of important nonmetallic substances; hence they are included in the book, A third anomaly is that, by common consent of geologists, engineers, mineral economists, and others concerned, the term industrial minerals may include not only rocks and minerals but also certain manufactured products like cement and lime, and even mixed groups of natural and artificial products, such as abrasives and refractories. Thus the central realm of the industrial minerals is clear enough, but its boundaries tend to be indefinable. Since a definition that allowed for every irregularity in the outer fringes would be excessively unwieldy, the one quoted above may be considered satisfactory. The expression industrial minerals is commonly equated with nonmetallics, and with the somewhat more precise phrase industrial minerals and rocks as in the title of this book. Characteristics of the Field The industrial minerals as broadly interpreted are a highly diverse group of materials; indeed, we may say paradoxically that diversity is about all they have in common. At one end of the spectrum are ordinary earth materials such as gravel and crushed stone, with a value of perhaps $3 per st; at the opposite end are industrial diamonds, which sell (by the carat) at the rate of roughly $18,000,000 per st. Neither the metals nor the fuels, and few if any categories of manufactured products, include items that differ in value by more than six orders of magnitude. Most gravel and stone are of no value unless close to a market; diamonds and other exotic substances possess such unique and desirable properties that their occurrence in remote corners of the earth is no deterrent to their use. The broad range of industrial minerals falls between these extremes of unit value and place value. The industrial minerals penetrate the entire fabric of modern industrialized society, from such fundamental operations as drilling for oil and smelting iron ore to the manufacture of virtually the whole array of consumer products. There is no industrial-minerals industry; there are many industries. The simple term field is convenient as an all-inclusive expression. An industry is considered to belong in the industrial-minerals field if its operations consist of extraction and processing, but not manufacturing. Thus the mining and beneficiation of feldspar is a mineral industry, but the manufacture of ceramic products is not. In the cement and lime industries, processing merges into manufacture, and the line is less distinct. It disappears altogether in a plant that extracts salt as artificial brines, and makes sodium and chlorine chemicals, all under the same roof. The United States is rapidly depleting many of its most important minerals and fuels. The first two Annual Reports by the Secretary of the Interior, under the Mining and Minerals Policy Act of 1970, made us acutely aware that the natural resources that enabled this Nation to attain an unprecedented growth in terms of economic well-being, and to set an example of independent strength through the democratic process, are finite. Once they are depleted, large imports will be required. Simultaneously, competition for available supplies, especially of petroleum, is increasing in the expanding European and Japanese industrial communities and in the underdeveloped nations of the world. Even before the crisis of late 1973, the oil-producing nations of the world, principally in the Middle East, but including Canada and Latin America, were recognizing that the worldwide need for crude oil, petroleum products, and natural gas could be translated into an unprecedented economic bargaining position. Thus, the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) raised the price of their crude twice during the first 6 months of 1973. By yearend the energy situation had be-come acute, and it seemed probable that regardless of current political developments, the era of cheap energy was over.

Endless lines at service station gasoline pumps, limited travel at reduced speeds, thermostats set at an uncozy sixty-eight degrees in the dead of winter-these are but a few of the inconveniences and discomforts that awakened Americans to a realization that our domestic minerals resources, traditionally taken for granted, are not boundless. We begin to accept and practice principles of conservation, yet we are aware that this alone cannot appreciably forestall the inevitable depletion of our minerals, metals, and fossil fuels-resources critical to our Nation's economy. The key to warding off shortages is the development of technology that will insure a continuing, adequate supply of minerals and energy from reliable sources at the lowest possible costs to society and the environment. The mission of the Bureau of Mines is to develop this improved technology. Established in 1910, the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior is the Federal Government's primary research arm in the minerals and fossil fuels fields. In addition to its research role, the Bureau keeps the Government informed of the Nation's mineral posture. The Bureau also seeks to stimulate private industry, through the awarding of grants and contracts, to produce minerals and fuels at a rate compatible with the country's increasing demands.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, May, 1879, I made the first announcement in America of the results obtained by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy C. Gilchrist, ill their efforts to eliminate phosphorus in the manufacture of steel in the Bessemer converter and the open-hearth furnace.1 The first published statement in an American newspaper was a reprint of the first Thomas-Gilchrist paper, 2 which I sent to J. C. Bayles, at that time the editor. At the suggestion of many friends who were present at the Pittsburg meeting, and others who are cognizant of the beginnings of the process in the United States, and for the information of the younger generation of the iron and steel fraternity, I have thought it eminently proper that the history of the process in detail should be given where I made the first announcement and where the process has had its largest development. During my residence in England, from April, 1873, to February, 1879, and as a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1874, I was present at many of its meetings during those years. At nearly -every meeting the burden of discussion was the question of the use of pig-iron containing phosphorus in the. manufacture of steel by the Bessemer or the open-hearth process. Contributions made by mining have played a much more significant role in the development of civilization than is generally conceded by historians or recognized by ordinary citizens. In modern society, mined products pervade all industry and the lives of all civilized people. Early man relied largely on stone and ceramics, and eventually metals, to fashion tools and weapons. Civilization was advanced by discoveries such as abundant supplies of high-quality flint in northern France and southern England and firesetting to break rock. Middle Eastern cultures flourished not only because of agriculture and trade, but also because of mineral-rich deposits nearby. The earliest miners date back perhaps to 300,000 BC; their quest was for nonmetallic minerals (chert, flint, obsidian) suitable for utensils and eventually for weapons. Other rocks and minerals (ceramics, clay, salt, meteoric iron) attracted the miners for jewelry, cosmetics, construction materials, food seasoning, and coinage. At first, their excavations were confined to the surface, either pits or placers. But by about 40,000 BC, mine workings had been extended underground as short adits or shafts, and by 8000 BC as elaborate interconnected openings 300 ft (90 m) in depth. Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost more than $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high costs make extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. Operations research techniques are used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate, over 35%, of the total US longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation was used to generate models of transfers under Carving conditions; and the economic feasibility of tine-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure was investigated.

Heap leach processes can encounter diverse flow conditions, such as infiltration into dry ore material, drainage, perched water tables and heterogeneous materials, leading to large variations in permeability and the creation of preferential flow pathways. Climate and meteorological conditions, such as precipitation, evaporation, and temperature, can also have a significant effect on the hydrodynamics of the heap. Nonuniform and adverse flow behavior within the heap contributes to reducing the leaching efficiency of the heap leading to lower metal recoveries. The variability of flow within the heap can result in solute transport problems, which limit the leach reaction kinetics. Therefore, understanding the flow and transport phenomena within the heap is critical in its design and optimization. A comprehensive heap leach model, developed within a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework, employs robust algorithms to solve diverse variably saturated flow conditions. The model allows for a wide array of complex thermo-fluid physics to be represented and captures suites of very complex reactions that are closely coupled with thermal conditions and key microbial populations. Employing a three-dimensional heterogeneous ‘test’ heap, a number of flow conditions are investigated and the sensitivity of metal recovery is discussed.

"The purpose of this study is to evaluate the rock mass stability around the tunnels by three-dimensional (3-D) numerical modeling. Complex geological and tunnel features have been included in the model using the software package 3DEC™. Based on the available information on stratigraphy, geological structures, and mechanical properties of rock masses and discontinuities from the underground mine, 3-D stress analyses were performed on various cases with different K0 (lateral stress ratio) values, constitutive models, as well as support systems. Relations between these factors and the distributions of stress, displacement, and failure zones around the tunnels were obtained and discussed. Finally, comparisons between the field deformation measurements and numerical simulations are used as validations for the simulations, helping to determine the appropriate K0 value and material constitutive models for the underground mine.INTRODUCTIONThe case study site is an underground mine in the USA with a monthly ore production between 20,000 and 30,000 tons. The regional geology of the mine is structurally and stratigraphically complex. Rocks in the area include carbonaceous mudstone and limestone, tuffaceous mudstone and limestone, polylithic megaclastic debris flows, fine-grained debris flows and basalts, all part of the Cambrian-Ordovician Comus formation and related dikes. Both the mineralization and faults have general orientations striking N-S to NW-SE with high dip angles. The ore body in the mine has an incline of about 25---45 degrees located in relatively low quality rock; hence, cut-and-fill mining has been used.This underground mine has two vertical shafts used for ventilation, ore hoisting, and for personnel and material transportation. Development drifts were designed and driven to extract and transport the ore, as shown in Figure I. Bolts, mesh, and shotcrete have been applied in this mine for ground control. In order to reach various locations, the tunnel system is designed with different heading directions and inclines, which will be described in detail later. The area selected for modeling is a cubic region including all the tunnels inside the black square (Figure 1)."

One critical element of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) autonomous mining research program is the development of a reliable coal interface detection (CID) system. Several candidate CID concepts currently being investigated by the Bureau include vibration, passive infrared, radar, and natural gamma radiation (NGR). To establish which CID sensor technologies need to be developed for a given seam, coal and adjacent rock samples (i.e., immediate roof and floor) are being collected from selected major coal seams in the U.S. and are being analyzed in terms of NGR and other geophysical measurements. Results of the NGR measurements indicate that, in general, all shale and shale-like materials (e.g., drawslate, slate, and fireclay) have higher NGR readings than the coal seam. Consequently the NGR method appears to be a potentially useful CID tool, provided that the immediate roof and floor are both composed of a high percentage of shale-type material.
