The objective of this research is to develop a method for measuring the tensile strength at the interface between minerals in rock. These measurements reflect the strength of the attractive forces operating at crystalline interfaces in rock. Since these forces act in opposition to the forces set up in various rock fragmentation processes, measuring their strength may help in designing more efficient methods of rock fragmentation. The method developed for measuring the strength of intergranular adhesion in rock involves separating a bicrystal from the rock and determining the tensile strength at its solid-solid interface. This technique has been successfully applied to the study of quartz-feldspar interfaces separated from massive pegmatites, graphic granite, and the Rockville granite, yielding average tensile strengths of 5.86, 8.62, and 10.65 meganewtons per meter squared (MN/m2) (850, 1,250, and 1,524 psi, respectively). The data this technique provides indicate that the members of these bicrystals are strongly adherent. Examirtation of bicrystals broken at the crystalline interfaces indicates that the bonds responsible for this adhesion operate over only a portion of the interfacial area. This work conclusively demonstrates that tensile strength tests can be conducted on small selected areas; for example, grain boundaries in rock. The small-scale zones of strength or weakness determined in this way can be related to the overall strength of the rock.

A study was conducted to determine if commonly used alloying additions or coating materials can prevent the formation of a liquid-copper phase during the reheating of copper-containing steels. If so, the tendency of such steels to surface-crack during hot-working might be eliminated. Steel specimens were scaled by heating them either isothermally or in a programed manner that simulated industrial furnace practice. Metallographic examination of the heated specimens showed that molten fayalite (Fe2Si04) completely prevented the formation of liquid copper at the surface. Fayalite, which melts at 2,200° F (1,205° C), was formed by internal oxidation of the silicon contained in the steel. By forming complex molten oxides, coatings of borax glass were also effective in preventing the occurrence of liquid copper at the steel surface.

The results of a Feasibility and Design Study of Surface Impregnation Equipment to be used for Chemical Stabilization of Coal Mine Structures are described in this report. The study was sponsored by the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, under Contract H0210055. This program was undertaken as an essential part of the Bureau of Mines Chemical Ground Stabilization Program. The responsible prime contractor was The Eimco Tunneling and Mining Machinery Division of the Envirotech Corporation. The Rocketdyne Division of the North American Rockwell Corporation performed part of the feasibility study and design and testing of the metering and feed system as a subcontractor to Eimco.

The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. Preliminary results are given of solvent stimulation of two wells producing viscous oil (14°-17° API) from the Tar zone in the Wilmington field, California. The solvent (coker oil, an intermediate refinery product) was injected into the formation, and after a soak period, the well was returned to production. Data are given on crude oil properties, solvent properties, determination of volume of solvent in the produced oil, rate of oil production before and after stimulation, volume of additional oil produced, and volume of solvent recovered. Although further study and improvement of the method arcs needed, cyclic solvent stimulation appears to be an unqualified success in one well and a moderate success in the other.

Air pollutants in exhaust gas produced from LP-gas (propane) were studied using both laboratory engines and vehicles. The objective of the study was to evaluate engine parameters relating to the advantageous use of propane as a low-pollution fuel. Some comparisons are made between gasoline, natural gas, and propane. Results show that engines can operate over a wider range of A/F with minimum carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emission when using propane than when using gasoline. Mixture enrichment using propane is unnecessary during cold starts, thereby eliminating the emission penalty during warmup. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emission using propane are unaffected by ambient temperature. The photochemical reactivity of hydrocarbon emission is considerably lower with propane than with gasoline.

Approximately 90% of all potash produced is employed as a fertilizer, either directly or with nitrogen and phosphorus. The remaining 10% is utilized in the manufacture of other chemical products, The original source of potassium was wood ash (hence the name potash), However, today the term potash refers to all commercially important salts of potassium. Sylvite, usually found associated with halite, is the predominant economic potash mineral; carnallite a lesser important source of potassium chloride, while langbeinite is important as a source of potassium sulphate. The world's first potash mining operation commenced in Strassfurt, Germany about 1860, Since that time the industry has grown steadily to its present annual volume of about 30, 000, 000 tons of potassium chloride products or 18, 000, 000 tons of K2O equivalent, potassium chloride or "muriate of potash" being equivalent to 63. 1% pure K2O, WORLD POTASH RESERVES ARE NOT EVENLY DISTRIBUTED The earth's crust contains 2 to 3 per cent potassium, mostly in the form of insoluble silicate minerals. The economically important deposits, however, are formed from brines concentrated by evaporation. The world's most important commercial deposits are of Devonian and Permian age, however soluble potassium bearing salts are presently being concentrated by evaporation in several drainage basins, notably Searles Lake, California, Great Salt Lake, Utah' and in the Dead Sea. At least twenty-four countries are known to have reserves of potash: Canada and the USSR have over 80% of the presently known world reserves, (Figure 1)

The title of this talk has brought some interesting responses - even before it was written - from different parts of the country. A geologist from the Western U. S, was deeply concerned with recent layoffs in his profession and the employment situation in general and wondered why "the AIME wasn't doing anything for the benefit of its members." A petroleum engineer in Texas said that a group in his field were studying "professionalism" and their professional status and wondered if there were any words of wisdom for him. A mining engineering professor from the East pointed out that the National Science Foundation did not include mining engineering as one of its recognized fields in one of its equipment funding programs. These are just a few examples of reactions received to date, but they serve to illustrate the broad image that the title has meant to various people. Actually the term profession is defined by Webster as "a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation." The word encroach means "to enter by gradual steps or by stealth into the possessions or rights of another", or "to advance beyond desirable or normal limits." The intention of this paper, as originally conceived and requested by the program chairman, was to combine those two words literally and talk about how the professional standing of mineral engineers is being eroded from people outside the profession. But the amazing preliminary response suggests that it may be timely to broaden the discussion by including some comments about professionalism in general. In the paper the terms "mineral engineer" or "mining engineering" are used frequently, but it should be clearly understood that much of what is said is valid and is intended for all fields covered by SME and perhaps for AIME in general.

When one's attention moves from the control of a process unit or from the control of a department of similar units, to the control of an entire plant, two things must change. One is the techniques of control, and the other, the goal or purpose of control. The goal is no longer maintaining a certain quality of product or maintaining a particular flow rate through a process unit. The goal becomes economic - how to make the most money out of the plant. The principal control techniques become those of optimizing, rather than regulating. It is quite common to discuss the control of an entire plant in terms of three levels of control l; regulation, supervision, and optimization. Regulation is the control of inputs to a process unit at desired values. This is accomplished by two or three mode analog controllers or DDC loops. The second level of control is the selection of these desired values, e.g., set-points of the regulation controllers. The third level is to make such adjustments or corrections to the supervisory calculations so as to optimize the plant profit. It is immediately evident that supervisory control and optimizing control are intimately related, and a distinct dividing line cannot always be drawn between the two. Some authors prefer to add even more levels such as adaptive control and management information systems, but we believe our point is well made without further division of the functions which are necessary for complete plant control. To accomplish the economic goal, that is, the optimizing (maximizing) of the profit of a mineral processing plant, the plant should ideally be operated as if it were a separate company, buying its raw materials on the open market and selling its products on the open market. While petrochemical plants endeavor to operate in that manner, unfortunately this is not true of a mineral processing plant. The plant manager has to accept the amount and quality of ore the mining department delivers to him, and the products (concentrates) are delivered to another department of the company for further refining. Data on the cost and quantity available were developed for rutile (TiO2), which is potentially recoverable as a byproduct at sand-washing plants in the Southeastern States of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Baaed on 1969 production data, an estimated 4,300 tons of rutile could be recovered annually from plants that process more than 25,000 tons of sand per year. Rutile prices at which this resource would be available ranged upward from $262 per ton, compared with the current market value of $185 per ton.

The major role of financial institutions in the free world in the development of mineral resources is to provide the necessary capital in the form of loans to underwrite the development of these resources by the industry on a stable and continuous basis. This capital provided by the depositors to the bank must be invested in sound projects where the degree of risk is relatively small, the return on the investment is reasonable and the time to retire the loan is of short duration. Money is, therefore, one of the important ingredients along with technology, manpower and an exploitable resource that will provide a sound economic base in this region of development. Canadian banks are similar to banks of other western nations, although each country has some differences in their banking systems. The basic difference between the American and Canadian systems is that the former employs unit banking while the Canadian utilizes the more mobile branch system, which is prohibited or restricted in the United States and some other countries. Canadian banks are the subject of this paper, so, subsequent material will relate to Canadian banks unless indicated otherwise. It will be realized by everyone that the mineral industry is only one area of the economy in which the banks are interested and to cover the subject matter in the time allowed, the topic is restricted to mineral resource development. In Canada this is a vital sector of our economy and before we outline some of the details of financing and services involved in various aspects of mineral development, a review of the Canadian mineral industry is a necessary part of the sequence of presentation. The writer presents this material as a resource engineer advising a major bank in mineral matters, so the presentation may relate more to the financial problems of the developer

For the commercial production of iron ore pellets from hematite ores, as it is practiced in various pellet plants, the addition of lime has shown to be an efficient means with a view to improving cold compression and abrasive strength of the indurated pellets considerably. Unfortunately, it has also been shown at the same time, that the metallurgical properties as, for instance, swelling behavior, softening during reduction under load and disintegration of the grain, can be adversely affected to a high degree. In the course of smelting tests carried out by renowned steelworks, blast furnace operation was heavily disturbed by the swelling and early softening of the pellets, also by their disintegration in the low-temperature range, which altogether led to a considerable lowering of the smelting rate (1, 2, 3).

CYCLING WITH CEMENT "THE WHEEL IS COME FULL CIRCLE" Shakespeare's King Lear Act V, Scene 3, Line 176 The time clock of the cement industry has been turned back to the early 1950s. After the trials and tribulations of the decade of the Sixties, the hands now stand where they did just over twenty years ago. Cement shipments have steadily increased, with a record 419 million barrel level (78.8 million tons) being reached last year. Plants are operating at average utilization rates in excess of 85 percent of rated capacity. The spread between supply and demand has narrowed to where a definite shortage of cement now exists within the industry. The notable and unfortunate difference between the two periods however is that, back then, cement's returns were a respectable 14 to 18 percent, whereas today they stand at less than half those levels. Insufficient return forms the present foundation of the U.S. cement industry. This lack is destined to have a cumulative effect. Just as the industry's balance between supply and demand is returning to favorable proportions, promising a period that has historically and now should generate those profit levels required to modernize and provide for capacity addition, cement instead finds itself frozen by federal price controls into the semi-depressed condition that has existed for over a decade and from which it was just starting to emerge. Capital is not attracted to continued low returns, and increasingly restrictive pollution control measures are necessitating great non-productive expenditures be made as definite costs to stay in business. Even a clouded crystal ball would reveal that additional cement plant closings can be expected.

The purpose of this research was to develop a computer simulator fur predicting the air quality in existing coal mines as well as a design aid for developing new mines. In addition to the air quantity flow, the other variables of tempera Lure, moisture, methane and respirable dust are necessary to determine the air quality. An additional feature of this simulator is that it allows parametric studies of these variables to explore the effect that these variables have on the air quality of an operating mine system. The research has also pointed out arias where more research is needed, and promote better and more systematic data taking techniques. Wang and Hartman (see Reference 9, on page 1-98 of Section 1) had already published a computer program to determine the ventilation of large mines, and Wang and Saperstein (see Reference 10 on page 1-98 of Section 1) later published a refinement of the work in the previous reference. These references were the starting point of the simulator developed by this present research effort, and Section 1 of this report is a slightly modified version of the original vent elation program. This work presents: 1.) the results obtained from measurements of temperature profiles in pillars and at working faces of three coal mines located in Colorado and New Mexico, 2) a comparison of the experimental results with theoretical predictors based on linear heat flow models, and 3) temperature profile predictions based on a two dimensional coal mine model with an inclined crack located in the roof or wall of the opening. The thermal properties of the coal and shale samples taken from the mines were used as input data for the computer model. Good agreement was found between the measured profiles and the theoretical values obtained with the one dimensional model. The two dimensional model results show that a visible crack (0.01-0.07-ft thick) in a coal roof causes a surface temperature difference from 0.2 to 1°F at the edge of the crack for rock exposed to air from 1 hr to 288 hrs and with the air to rock temperature differences from 2°-6°F. A temperature difference of 0.3 °F was found between solid and broken rock in a shale roof with a 0.03-ft thick crack inclined 45° to the horizontal after a ventilating time of 48 hrs and the air to rock temperature difference of 2.1°F.

Crude oils from fields throughout the world are analyzed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the characteristics of the oils and their contribution to the petroleum resources of the world. Analyses are reported for 169 foreign crude oil samples from 122 oilfields in Africa, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, North America, and South America. Tables show the geographic and geo- logic origin of the samples, names of companies that supplied the samples, annual production for the fields, general characteristics and analytical and computed data, hydrocarbon-type data, cumulative production of the larger fields, and references to sources of geological and field development information. The analyses were made by the Bureau of Mines routine method and comparisons may be made with more than 8,000 other such analyses.

This study estimates costs of producing bituminous coal and lignite by strip-mining methods in 12 hypothetical mines. Basic costs are developed by geographic area, rank of coal, and output capacity. Seam thickness and depth and type of overburden are considered typical for the area in which the hypothetical mine would be located. The cost analyses are based on the use of new equipment, the prevailing union wage scales, and the payment of all miscellaneous costs including royalties, contributions to the miners' welfare fund, and license and permit fees. All model mines are considered to have a life span of 20 years. Capital costs of bituminous strip mines with a capacity of 1 million tons per year range from $12.7 million in the Appalachian region to $16.0 million in the Interior province. The corresponding selling price, assuming a discounted cash flow return of 12 percent on investment, is $5.40 and $6.95 per ton, respectively. For bituminous coal strip mines producing 3 million tons annually, a capital investment of $24.9 million will render a selling price of, $3.46 per ton in the Interior province, whereas a similar mine in the Appalachian region requires a capital investment of $28.0 million to produce coal selling for $4.01 per ton. Subbituminous strip mines of 5 million tons of output per year range in capital costs from $28.7 million in the Southwest to $13.9 million in Wyoming and Montana. Coal produced in the Southwest would sell for $3.03 per ton, while coal from Wyoming and Montana would sell for $1.83 and $1.64 per ton, respectively. The capital costs for the strip mining of lignite range from $6.4 million for an output capacity of 1 million tons annually to $20.7 million for an annual capacity of 5 million tons. The corresponding selling prices of $3.01 and $2.12 per ton, respectively, Indicate the advantages of a large-capacity strip mine.

Intermittent coal mining has been conducted in Alaska for over a century. The first report of coal in Alaska was by the Veechy expedition of 1826 and 1827. Whaling ships used coal from Corwin Bluff near Cape Beaufort during the early and latter parts of the 19th century. The first coal mine in Alaska -- and probably the oldest in the Pacific coast of North America -- was opened by the Russians at Port Graham on the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The mine was operated from 1855 until 1867 when the United States took possession of Alaska. From 1880 to 1915 coal mining was carried on intermittently at several localities including Unga Island, Herendeen Bay, Chignik Bay, Kachemak Bay, and several points along the Yukon River. Small coal mines along the Yukon River provided fuel for the river steamers traveling from St. Michaels to Whitehorse. The area of sustained coal production began with the completion of the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to the Matanuska coal field in 1916 and to the Nenana field in 1918. Coal production continued to increase until 1953, at which time the oil and gas fields in Cook Inlet were developed. Oil and gas eventually replaced- the Matanuska coal as a means of providing heat and power. The military in the Anchorage area shifted from coal to oil in 1967 causing a decrease in production. The increased demand for electric power in the Fairbanks area offset the decline and coal production started to increase. In 1969-1970 the Golden Valley Electric Association constructed a mine-mouth power plant 70 miles southwest of Fairbanks near Healy and a power line to Fairbanks. LOCATION OF COALS IN ALASKA Coals are found in all geographical subdivisions of Alaska. Coal in Alaska ranges in age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grade from lignite through anthracite. Figure 1 shows the locations of Alaskan coal fields. The only fields that have been developed extensively are the Matanuska and Nenana. Figure 2
