MFIRE, written in Fortran 77, is a computer program for ventilation state simulation in the steady state or transient state condition. It can be applied for the calculation of normal ventilation system planning or the analysis of the dynamic state variation in a ventilation system under thermal or mechanical disturbance. The state simulator MFIRE is a useful tool for mine fire fighting. In the case of a mine fire, mine ventilation engineers want to get some help to obtain more information, such as what is happening in the underground mine and how to control the mine fire, for correct decision making. By use of program MF'IRE, forecasts can be made on the variation of airflow, temperature, and contaminant distribution in a ventilation system during a mine fire. The paths which the contaminant takes at each time interval can be traced. The program MFIRE can be of assistance in the preplanning of escape routes. It can also be helpful during a mine fire emergency and mine recovery operation. Besides of offering the information of state simulation during a mine fire, MFIRE can be applied for state control by pretesting the suitability of the selected state control measures. It is to simulate the effects of the state control measures on the airflow distribution of a dynamic ventilation system. The testing result can be used for fire fighting in a similar real case of a mine fire. By employing empirical methods or a qualitative analysis like Budryk approach, ventilation engineers can choose different combinations of locations and sizes of control devices as samples of state control for an underground mine fire. Program MFIRE can simulate the different combination samples, that consist of a certain mine fue, the corresponding different control measures, and obtain the control effects. After the different control results are compared, the state control measure, which creates the best effect among the different state control measures, will be chosen for that fire case. When a mine fire, which is similar to one of the pretested cases, breaks out, the corresponding choice of the state control measure is applied to the ventilation system. It means that the simulator MFIRE has the function of indirect state control [10]. To achieve the above two functions, state simulation and state control, the mine ventilation system condition, sometimes, should be changed in a wide range to meet the requirement of the fire fighting. These wide system condition changes, such as adding operating fans, stopping or reversing fans, changing fan characteristics, adding regulators and making airflow shortcuts are represented in the time table of the input data set When the data files are changed in a wide range, however, an iteration divergence and some other computing errors in the distribution of airflow, temperature, and contaminant may occur. More serious logical programming and flexible selection on the algorithms are wanted to meet the request of the different data sets, to achieve correct state distribution simulation and improve the iteration convergence. To enhance the reliability and common suitability of program MFIRE, it is necessary to make investigation, analysis, and modification for the formal versions of MFIRE. Surface subsidence induced by underground coal mining activities, especially longwall mining operations, can cause various problems to interstate highways ranging from structural integrity, drivability to safety. Accurate subsidence prediction, correct influence assessments, and effective mitigation measures are the keys to ensure the safety of highway traffic. The surface subsidence prediction program, called comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model (CISPM), was developed based on the principle of influence function method and has been validated with a large number of subsidence measurements. In this paper, the techniques to use the predicted final surface movements and deformations for assessing their influence on the integrity and functionality of highway structures (e.g., road surface pavements, concrete slabs, transverse joints, etc.), vehicle dynamics, comfort level, and drivability are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the highway structures and to ensure traffic safety are proposed along with an application case.

The Betts process for electrorefining of lead has been in operation since 1902 in the Trail Operations Metallurgical complex. The Betts process allows production of high purity lead in a single electrochemical step. Process improvements and plant expansions have taken place over the many decades of operation of this process which has proven to be robust, flexible, and capable of successfully treating a large range of anode bullion compositions. This paper reviews the history of the Betts lead electrorefining process, the innovations and quick industrial adoption of new discoveries that took place at the end of the nineteenth century. The process was first implemented in Trail Operations and integrated very well with metallurgical needs then and now.

From observations of the linear displacement of oil by water from a porous medium as visualized in transparent models, new insight into the mechanism of vircous fingering, as occurring in the case of unfavorable oil-water viscosity ratios, has been obtained. A mathematical description of the observed phenomena leads to formulas. expressing both oil production and pressure drop across the formation as a func-tion of cumulative water injection with the oil-water viscosity ratio as a parameter. Theoretical results are compared with those obtained from scaled laboratory experiments in sand-filled rubes in which water was injected at the one end and production was obtained from the other end. In the second part of the paper the same principles are used to calculate a more realistic production scheme in which production of oil and water is obtained from wells regularly distributed over the field. Results show satisfactory agreement with production data of an actual oil field. Application of the theory is extremely simple as only a limited number of readily available parameters have to be known and results are presented in an analytical form. INTRODUCTION When oil is displaced from a porous medium by water having a viscosity lower than the oil. the oil-water interface is essentially unstable and has the tendency to break up into what are called "fingers" or "streamers". This Viscous fingering has been noted before by Engelberts and Klinkenberg' and has recently been demonstrated in transparent models by van Meurs-. It is highly questionable whether it is at all possible to perform relative permeability measurements In the laboratory reproducing the same distribution of water and oil in the cores as Present in practice. Therefore, we based our descriptive theory on an idealized model which was "tailored" to the fingering mechanism as observed in transparent models under scaled conditions. This approach was the more attractive, as a highly simplified model had already yielded an adequate description of the process. Though we are aware our theoretical approach can be extended in several ways, it is given here in its simplest form to explain the fundamental principles and to avoid complicated formulas. SIMPLEST CASE OF A LINEAR DRIVE Observations and Theoretical Model In Fig. 1 a series of photographs shows how water penetrates into a formation saturated with an oil which is considerably more viscous than the water. The technique for obtaining these photographs, using transparent models, has already been described?. The fingers can be clearly observed and are seen to be mainly parallel to the flow direction. Note that the contours of these fingers are not smooth but show protrusions of water enclosing oil pockets.

Statistical summary of the mineral industry world production, exports and imports 1964-1969 Published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office, London, on behalf of the Institute of Geological Sciences (1971) The Statistical Summary contains a wealth of care fully garnered information on the production, exports and imports of the principal minerals and mineral products throughout the world for the period 1964-1969, and it should therefore be of particular interest to economic geologists and others concerned with marketing and selling minerals. In view of the intractable nature of the source data it is quite an achievement to have published figures for 1969 so expeditiously. On picking up the Summary this reviewer instinctively compared it with the Annual Yearbook published by the United States Department of the Interior. The Yearbooks have been issued annually since 1882, and today each consists of a set of three separate books containing five volumes. Apart from abundant statistics on the domestic and international mineral industries, the Yearbooks are known for their perspicacious reviews and articles on a host of different facets of the world's minerals industry. Physically the Summary is a much slimmer publication than the Yearbook, and it contains no commentary whatsoever other than occasional footnotes. The principal contents are a series of tables showing production, exports and imports of fifty-nine of the world's more important minerals and mineral products. Each table shows the weight of the material produced or traded, by countries, with figures for each of the six years in adjoining columns. In some cases (e.g. diamonds) values in British currency are quoted in addition to weights. Most of the data have been abstracted from national reports and returns, although in some instances estimates are quoted where national sources are silent--as for example the production of platinum in South Africa. One wonders in passing if any useful purpose is served by the continued suppression of this particular figure. The four South African producers must surely be able to estimate each other's production fairly accurately by now, and one imagines that the national export figures can likewise be synthesised. This reviewer has two minor criticisms of an otherwise praiseworthy publication. Firstly it seems an unnecessary anachronism to perpetuate the split between 'Commonwealth' and 'Other' countries-the split can have little practical significance today. Secondly, what is one to make of the statement that the 1966-1969 figures for exports from Rhodesia of chrome ore and copper, to take two examples only, are 'not available'? It seems improbable that no estimates of these figures have been made since the imposition of sanctions, and inevitably one suspects that the figures have been excluded on policy grounds. Hopefully this problem will have been solved when the next Summary is published. M.J.M. South Africa, land of Challenge by Maurice Tyack France Interpresse, 323 pages, price R18-00. Is South Africa God's richest acre? In its mineral wealth it certainly is, but what of the many other complex overlays of emotions, traditions and racial problems? South Africa, Land of Challenge, provides the background. This is reported to be the first comprehensive documentary work of its kind on South Africa. It is a handsome volume measuring 12ft by 9f', is illustrated by at least 600 photographs of South Africa, more than half of which are in colour, and contains 21 original maps and charts. The book covers the full spectrum of South Africa's very existence, its geography, pre-history, its customs, countryside, natural resources and its cities. The more controversial categories are thoroughly discussed, the people, their policies and politics. Mr Tyack is eminently qualified to write on South Africa, being the author of over 20 books on other African countries and having spent more than three years of research, in the field, in South African archives and also in various libraries and museums, in preparation for this book. The book claims to be free of any party political bias and appears to be an honest attempt at a factual survey. However, a work of this magnitude will undoubtedly leave an impression on the reader and the tone of this book is decidedly patriotic. This is a useful reference work on South Africa that most South Africans will be proud to own. J.P.H. Ergonomics and physical environmental factors This publication by I.L.O. of a symposium in Rome in September 1968 has much useful information for the mining industry in regard to the health and productivity of its labour force. The first subject dealt with is mechanical vibrations. From this section it is clear that men who drive, for many hours each day, vehicles which vibrate in the 6 Hz range are subject to serious physiological and psychological effects. The former may show as changes to the vertebral column (which has a resonance in the 4-5 Hz range). The circulatory system is adversely effected by values in the 6-10 Hz range and the vision is impaired at between 40-100 Hz. Less definite knowledge exists of the effects of vibration on the hand-arm system from mechanical drills etc, although Raynauds disease of the blood vessels of the hand and degenerative diseases of the elbow and shoulder joints occur in men using drills which vibrate, respectively, in the higher and low frequency ranges. Donna Summer wrote and recorded a song in 1983 with Michael Omartian called, “She Works Hard for the Money.” The song was inspired by her encounter with an exhausted rest room attendant, Onetta Johnson, who is mentioned in the song by name, and featured on the album’s back cover. ISEE President James Daley, in the May/June 2019 in The Journal of Explosives Engineering discussed the Six Pillars related to the ISEE. We will use the Internal Processes pillar to frame this discussion. The Internal Process Pillar includes five separate sub-committees – we will see how this concept applies to both ATF Explosives record-keeping compliance and business process compliance in general. We will discuss electronic and paper record keeping, what works and what doesn’t. We’ll review record keeping in light of those five sub-committees: Audit, Awards, Constitution, Ethics and Planning. You’ll come away with concrete steps you can use to improve your record keeping processes. This paper will show you how to make the hard work of inventory management and ATF record keeping work hard for you.

FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R2,124, compared with an excess of income over expenditure of R4,218 last year. There are a number of reasons for this substantial change. There was a loss on realization of investments compared with a substantial surplus in recent years. The publication of the Journal once again resulted in a large loss in spite of a generous subvention of R2,000 from the Department of Cultural Affairs and other assistance amounting to R750. The revenue from sales of publications was down considerably. This is a figure which fluctuates considerably from year to year. The secretarial fee was considerably higher than previously. Due to pressure of work it was necessary for the Secretary to relinquish his duties with the Institute of Land Surveyors and, therefore, for this Institute to assume the additional staff costs involved. Finally there was unusual expenditure on the 75th Anniversary celebrations. There was a pleasing increase in revenue from subscriptions, due to the steadily increasing membership, but this was quite inadequate to cover the substantial increases in expenditure and losses in revenue mentioned above. The changes that have been effected in the arrangements for the publication of the Journal have been mentioned elsewhere in this report. It is expected that these will bring about substantial financial benefits in the long term. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of Rl00 and the total fund was therefore increased by this amount to R4,206. The balance sheet indicates that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R8,755 to R13,059, while the Accumulated Funds now amount to R22,567 as against R24,691 last year. MEMBERSHIP Fifty-six Members, fifty-five Associate Members, thirteen Graduates, twenty-two Affiliates and twenty- nine Students were elected during the year. Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institutes. In making these changes the opportunity was taken of redesigning the outer cover of the Journal to incorporate the new coat of arms. The Presidential Address by Mr R. C. J. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH/PRL) conducted a series of large-scale experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of optical flame detectors, photoelectric smoke detectors, and combined ionization and photo­electric smoke detectors for rapidly detecting mining equipment cab fires. The detec­tor alarm times were then used to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to suppress cab material fires. This paper discusses the types of fire detectors tested, the experiments that Were conducted, and the results that were obtained. Con-" elusions are that rapid detection of equipment cab fires can be achieved to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to protect the operator in the cab.

A novel process, which includes hydrochloric acid leaching, iron powder cementation, sulphide precipitation and spray pyrolysis, was proposed to treat iron concentrate recovered from zinc kiln slag for comprehensive utilization. Treated by two-stage hydrochloric acid leaching, the leaching extents of Ag, Pb, Cu, Fe and Zn are 96.78%, 95.14%, 97.72%, 94.51% and 87.74%, respectively. More than 99% Cu and Ag are recovered from the leach liquor when iron powder is 25% higher than the stoichiometric requirement. More than 96% Pb and Zn is removed with three times of theoretical consumption of FeS, and the concentration of impurities of the final solution is less than 500 mg/L. Fe2O3 powder, which is spherical with a mean size of 12 μm and purity of 99%, is prepared with final solution at 700 °C. In this process, not only the metal values can be recovered effectively, but also the iron resources of zinc kiln slag can be converted into high purity Fe2O3, thus, the comprehensive utilization of iron concentrate recovered from zinc kiln slag can be realized.

There are at least a dozen methods of selectively removing cerium from a mixture of the rare earth elements (REE) including separation techniques based on the oxidation of cerium to the quadrivalent state. Several of the oxidation processes have been operated on a commercial scale, others have been tested and in some cases are part of proposed flowsheets. In this paper, we describe and compare the various methods. We also present preliminary estimates of the costs of early Ce removal and discuss recovery and purity aspects of the options.

Obtaining financing for mining and exploration projects has been difficult for the last several years, particularly for junior companies. Today, though, the purse strings of investors appear to be loosening, leaving the industry with many questions about financing in the coming years. How have capital markets and exploration spending changed? Are there signs of improvement? Where has capital been raised in private, public markets, stock exchanges, private equity, etc.? What companies successfully raised capital in the last year? How are they spending it? How are traditional and alternative funding sources investing in mining? What are the issues mining companies need to know about when tapping alternative sources of capital? Those were some of the questions that were answered at the Current Trends in Mining Finance conference, sponsored by SME and the New York Section April 26-28. Held in New York City, the conference attracted 115 professionals who work on the finance and economic side of the mining industry. Three of the conference organizers talked with Mining Engineering about the conference and the state of financing in the industry today. Tim Alch (TA) is managing director with Behre Dolbear & Co. Success of the Gold Line Eastside Extension rail tunnels in Los Angeles has prompted Metro?s planning for two new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 17 miles of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?Potential Methane Zone,? not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face TBMs will likely be specified. The Regional Connector, through the downtown area, includes one underground alternative with 1.7 miles of tunnel as well as three underground stations in soft ground and rock. Challenges will include tunnel and station construction under narrow streets. This paper will describe the alternatives, planning, geologic conditions and tunneling concepts for both planning studies.

Visit to the Datsun Nissan Company's body pressing and assembly plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, and the Claremont-Danville Tunnel on 27th February, 1970. The excursion arranged for the 27th February to the Datsun Nissan motor car assembly plant at Rosslyn, near Pretoria, in the morning and the Claremont-Danville tunnel in the afternoon was well supported by some 43 members. The visitors were met at the factory by Mr Rademeyer, the Industrial Relations Manager, and members of his staff and were taken to the artisan training centre for light refreshments. There is a well-equipped training section with an air-conditioned lecture hall; we were told that such training facilities were important because of the cosmopolitan nature of the artisan staff. The visitors were divided into small parties and taken to the tool die and jig-making section, which is perhaps the key department for a factory of this nature. There the many dies for the presses in the body pressing section, as well as the complicated jigs for body welding are made. The technique for making the castings for the dies is interesting. A polystyrene model of the casting is embedded in moulding sand. In a neighbouring foundry molten metal is pressed into the headers and burns away the polystyrene, which leaves no residue, and this exactly fills the space occupied by the model. This rough casting is then machined in large copying machines (costing as much as Rl80 000). An exact plastic model of the surface of the pressing required, set up in juxtaposition to this casting is traversed by a master stylus which operates the slave milling cutter, thereby machining the surface to close tolerances. The machined casting is cleaned up by hand and finally finished in large spotting machines, using a blue dye to show up high spots, to the fine degree of accuracy required. The body pressing section was next visited. There the large number of pressed parts which make up a vehicle body are pressed out of special deep drawing steel plate. Some of the largest presses were capable of applying a pressure of 1 200 tons and cost as much as Rl85 000 each. The visitors then followed through to the assembly section where jigs are used to hold together the many pressings, which are then spot welded into body frames. The frames go to an assembly line where they are finished to the stage for painting. The continuous crawl painting assembly line carries the frames through all the stages of prime coating with zinc phosphate sprayed on in a tunnel, followed by immersion of the lower parts in a priming bath, then drying and spray painting and baking in tunnels. The body frames, after painting, join another assembly line, where the doors, upholstery and many fittings are attached. After this stage the completed bodies are lowered onto and attached to the chassis units which are largely assembled from imported parts (engines, transmission units, etc.). From the end of the line the completed cars are driven off to the trial track and then pass through a tunnel with powerful water sprays to detect leaks in the body work. The proportion of locally made parts is just on 45 per cent. An interesting aspect of the assembly organization is that, of the 140 or 160 cars completed each day there may be included some of each of the Datsun model as well as some Renault and Alfa Romeo models models which are assembled by this company. The change from one model to another several times a day does not present any difficulty to the organization. Each section of the assembly plant 'buys' the units from the preceeding section and 'sells' to the succeeding section. This means that the responsibility of each section ends when the unit is sold to the next section. The cost of repairing any faults found subsequently is charged to the section where it is found, which puts a powerful emphasis on meticulous inspections between sections to safeguard their costs. After the tour the parties assembled at the lecture hall where a lavish cold buffet luncheon was provided by the company. After luncheon Mr A. R. C. Fowler, on behalf of the Institute, thanked the Managing Director, Mr W. J. Wilson and his staff for this most interesting and well organized visit. The party then left for the Claremont-Danville tunnel. The tunnel is being driven by General Mining Federale Kontrakteurs through the Daspoort Range, Pretoria, to link the suburbs of Danville, near Iscor, and Claremont, which at present can only be reached by a nine mile detour. It is estimated that some 6000 vehicles per day will use the tunnel. Before entering the tunnel a short talk was given by Mr Ross who is in charge of operations. In recent years considerable progress has been made in the development and application of mathematical techniques for the solution of certain problems involving economic "strategies". Such a problem might involve, for example, the scheduling of shipments of a commodity from a number of sources to a number of destinations. The object would be to schedule the shipments in a manner so as to satisfy the destination requirements and at the same time minimize the transportation costs. The solution to such a problem is not necessarily intuitively obvious. The "obvious" solution is frequently far from optimum. If the shipments are to be made from, for example, only two sources to four destinations, the optimum schedule is readily found. However, if shipments are to be made from, say, 10 sources to several hundred destinations, even a competent and experienced scheduler may spend considerable time in finding a reasonable answer. Even then he is not sure that he has the optimum solution. Furthermore, he has no way of knowing how far from optimum the answer is. Consequently, he does not know whether he should accept this solution or seek a better one. Prior to the advent of large high-speed digital computers, little more could be done with such problems because of their great size and multiplicity of possible solutions. A problem involving 20 sources and 50 destinations would require choosing, from a very large number of possible combinations, the optimum combination of 1,000 variables. The best one could do was to utilize intuition, extrapolation from past experience, and other non-exact approaches. With a high-speed computer, however, such problems can be solved providing a reasonable computational procedure (or algorithm) can be utilized. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a procedure (linear programming) and to apply this procedure to a production scheduling problem. THE RESERVOIR PROBLEM A simple reservoir model is used throughout this analysis to illustrate the use of linear programming. Even the simplest reservoir behavior problem is nonlinear in both space and time, but if the geometry is fixed for a particular study and the time variable is quantized, the resultant system may be described by linear constraints on the variable production rates. Crude oil is available from five separate sources and is delivered to a pipeline. Sources 1, 2, 3 and 4 are ideal reservoirs and therefore are subjected to reservoir flow restrictions. Source 5 is labeled "Outside Source" and crude oil from this source is assumed to be available in unlimited quantities without considering reservoir conditions. The general problem is to determine the schedule of crude oil production from five sources which, over an eight-year period and subject to certain restrictions, will result in maximum profit. "Profit" is defined to encompass all economic factors and expenses involved in producing and selling crude oil to a pipeline facility. Such economic factors are lumped to the extent that the term represents the dollars profit from one barrel of crude oil from any of the five sources entering the pipeline system. Table 1 presents the assumed profit per barrel for oil from any of the five sources over each of the four time periods. In this chart the eight years is broken into four equal intervals of two years. The selection of four time periods of two years each and the values representing the potential profit are completely arbitrary selections for the purpose of illustrating this idealized reservoir problem. In any practical application of this work a careful economic study would have to be made in order to estimate potential unit profits for time periods as far in the future as eight years. In this particular study it is assumed that all of the potential unit profits (C) are known and fixed before the production schedule is attempted. A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

The production of rare earth elements from ore usually consists of three steps; the separation of a concentrate of REE bearing minerals; the cracking of the REE minerals to liberate the REE into an aqueous solution and separation of REE into individual elements. This paper describes the results of laboratory tests conducted on a carbonate-rich REE ore containing bastnaesite and monazite. The tests cover the whole processing sequence of beneficiation, preparation of the REE solution using a caustic leach followed by acid leach to break monazite and bastnaesite and liberate REE into an aqueous solution and the partial separation of the REE using solvent extraction. Details on the product quality and process performances (recovery and impurities removal) are given for each studied step. The paper also discusses the economic advantage of separating the REE rather than producing a mixed REO product to be sold to a refinery for REE separation. A mini-pilot plant version of the process is currently planned.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct its the 2014 National Mining Hall of Fame Class on Sept. 13, 2014 during its 27th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s four inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. Harry M. Conger III, Günther Franz (Frank) Joklik, Ellen Swallow Richards and Dr. Alfred Weiss will join 223 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Conger was a great role model and strong advocate within Homestake Mining Co. and among his industry peers on behalf of environmentally responsible, safe, profitable and high-performance operations. As chairman and chief executive officer, Conger was instrumental in revitalizing and rebuilding Homestake into an industry leader in technological advances and environmental protection. Through his contributions in exploration, project development and operations management as Kennecott president and chief executive, Joklik did much to strengthen Kennecott as a company and assisted in restoring the competitiveness of the U.S. mining industry. Richards is generally recognized as the founder of ecology. She was the very definition of a pioneer in such diverse fields as chemistry, geology and mineralogy, mining and metallurgy, environmental science, public health, home economics and education. Weiss was a true visionary in using quantitative methods and digital computers to aid mineral exploration, plan and design mines, operate mineral production facilities and integrate the disparate information resources throughout a mining company into a modern management information system. NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman, Paul C. Jones, said, ?Again this year we are honored to be able to induct an outstanding group of deserving individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the mining industry in the United States. Included are two living inductees who have made significant contributions to management in the industry. One inductee was the first female graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, its first female faculty member and the first female member of AIME who had an outstanding career as a mineral investigator in the United States. Another inductee was a lifetime innovator in bringing digital technology into common use in our industry. Each of our 2014 inductees made significant and lasting contributions to our industry and are well deserving of becoming a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame.? Statistical valuation of diamondiferous deposits By H. S. SICHEL, D.Sc The valuation of diamondiferous deposits depends on (i) the density distribution, (ii) the size distribution of stones and (iii) the selling price structure prevailing at a particular time. In the density distribution the stochastic variable is defined as the number of individual stones found per sample unit irrespective of the stone size. The density distribution is discrete and allows for barren sample units. As diamonds often occur in clusters, a Poisson mixture distribution is derived which is entirely new, as existing discrete distributions cannot represent the stone number frequencies found in nature. For the sizes of diamonds, which are measured by weight, a new compound logarithmic normal distribution is developed. Combination of (i), (il) and (iii) leads to a meaningful appraisal of diamondiferous ground expressed in monetary value per production unit of mining. Finally, confidence limits are calculated which allow for inferences from sampling to recovery.

Members are advised that the Council has decided to change the format of the Journal from the present size to the standard international A4 size with effect from August, 1969. By making this change we will be conforming to more general practice today in regard to publications and this should effect certain economies and facilitate selling of advertising space. It has been arranged that in future the publication of the Journal, including advertisement sales, will be handled by Kelvin Publications (Pty.) Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Institutes. While making these changes, the opportunity is taken of redesigning the outer cover of the Journal to incorporate the new coat of arms. The Council trusts that these changes will meet with the approval of members.

When perusing articles which treat of mining geology, and when talking with miners on the field, one is at times unable to follow the exact thoughts intended to be expressed, owing to the introduction of occasional technical words, the meanings of which are not thoroughly understood either by the speaker or by the hearer, or possibly by both and laymen at times accuse their technical brethren of attempting to confuse them by employing unusual words in their conversations and writings. Technical words are necessary adjuncts to all arts and sciences. They creep into our language, frequently unnoticed by those who employ them, as being more concise and convenient than longer sentences to explain frequently recurring expressions. In many cases these words give the finest shades of meaning, such as aglomerate and congzomerate, but in others they are extremely ambiguous, for instance black sand, which in some places means ilmenite, in others, chromite, tourmaline, cassiterite, in fact, any black mineral occurring in the form of sand. Then, again, much confusion is cansed by the same rock or mineral having different names, e.g, jlu01'spa'i', which is known as cand, cann, cauk, kawk, blue-John, Derbyshire spar, &c. The multiplicity of local names is of course chiefly found among the more common minerals, which are widely distributed some people have a propensity for using words the meanings of which they understand as little as' they do how to pronounce them. We have heard such persons speak 'of vughs as "bugs," and oxides as "ox hides," and to show that there was no mistake in their intentions, we have seen these and other words written in the same way as they were pronounced. Then, again, some persons, relying more on examples than definitions, get a very vague idea as to what the true meaning of a term may be the word dimite is an example in point, which we have frequently heard applied to any dyke rock that the miner was unable to recognise as granite in fact, he uses the word in a general sense, just as the field geologist provisionally employs the word " greenstone " for certain rocks, until he has an opportunity of thoroughly investigating their character.
