HELIUM SHIPMENTS in 1964 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 15th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines helium plants were 667.4 million cubic feet,2 about 6 percent more than in 1963. Production at Bureau of Mines plants totaled 784.5 million cubic feet. An additional 3,193.1 million cubic feet, which was produced by private companies participating in the helium conservation program, was purchased by the Bureau and stored underground for future use. The Bureau of Mines continued to sell helium at $35 a thousand cubic feet, the price established in 1961. Substantial railway freight rate reductions for tank car shipments of helium went into effect during the year, resulting in a lower delivered price for helium. As the Nation moved ahead in the space age, it became increasingly apparent that helium would continue to play an essential role in research, in technology, in defense, and in industry.

The California pesticide industry in 1962 consumed about 30,000 tons of clay, talc, limestone, diatomite, sulfur, and other minerals as fillers (carriers and diluents) in pesticide formulation. This was 10 percent of the U.S. filler requirement for pesticides. About two-thirds of the California total was supplied by a few local mineral producers; the remainder came mainly from Florida, Georgia, and Wyoming. The objectives of this report are to provide data on quantities, sources, specifications, and market conditions for minerals used as fillers by California pesticide formulators. The study disclosed that specifications for mineral fillers have become more rigid and formulators have become more numerous in recent years. During 1962 over 1,200 firms registered 16,000 pesticide products with the Bureau of Chemistry in California. Factors which will tend to diminish future need for mineral fillers include the trend toward greater use of organic sprays rather than dusts and further development of biological controls, such as the development of sterile insect strains.

Brown iron ore deposits in Quitman County, Ga., were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Georgia, Department of Commerce, and the University of Alabama. Ninety-one holes were drilled, having an aggregate footage of 2,188 feet; seventy-one holes penetrated 248 feet of iron mineralization. Average thickness of the ore zone was 3.5 feet under an average thickness of 14.7 feet of overburden. The drilling developed inferred reserves containing nearly 30 million long tons of crude ore with an average analysis of 28 percent iron plus minor quantities of manganese. Test work done by the Bureau on the crude ore samples indicated that they would upgrade by current lug washer practice, with the use of a 1i8-inch screen, and yield 4.4 million dry long tons of concentrate with an average analysis of 52.1 percent iron plus manganese. The weight recovery obtained was 14.7 percent. Research studies made by the Bureau showed that the weight recovery would be increased by changing the screen size without any appreciable sacrifice of grade. The average weight recovery was increased to 18 percent with a 10-mesh screen and 22.8 percent with a 20-mesh screen. Screen tests studies indicated that there was no appreciable interlocking of the iron and manganese minerals and the clay and silica waste particles of the materials retained on a 200-mesh screen. Clay was prominent in micron-size slimes. Silica was deleterious in the minus 20-mesh size.

Three of the five primary aluminum producers in the Pacific Northwest have facilities in the region to make aluminum mill products. Only one of the three, however, produces a variety of shapes and forms. The principal reason for the lag in development of an aluminum mill products industry was found to be transportation cost. The long range outlook is for expansion, based mainly on growth of the western market for aluminum used in construction, containers and packaging, electrical applications, diesel trucks, mobile homes, and irregation pipe. Consumption of western aluminum mill products in 1985 is projected at 1.1 million tons, compared with estimated consumption of 250,000 tons in 1961.

The 8 ft by 91/2 ft drive which joined No. 7 Shaft with Browne Shaft on the 1,480 ft level was extended from both ends and met at a point approximately 12,000 ft from No. 7 (2,000 ft from Browne).The surveying required for this 2 1/2 mile haulage drive called for greater accuracy than was obtainable from South Mine standard methods. Procedures and devices from published information were tried and modified as required to suit local conditions. Several new methods were applied and improved as the drive advanced. The control of angular, linear and level measurements was perhaps considerably in excess of the requirements, but this was offset by abnormally large discrepancies resulting from shaft plumbing. The accuracy of the final breakthrough, although not to the standard desired, was sufficient to complete the connection without inconvenience and added cost.INTRODUCTIONThe acquisition of the Browne Shaft leases in January 1962 presented the management of Broken Hill South Limited with the problem of transporting ore from these leases to its mill. It was eventually decided that diesel locomotivehaulage through a 2t mile drive on the 1,480 ft level between the two mines was the best solution. The drive was advanced from both ends after Browne Shaft was deepened by 80 ft to reach the 1,480 ft level horizon. Each end advancedabout 15 ft/day with the miners working three 7 hr shifts. Blasting was restricted to the end of the shift.The survey work involved five shaft plumbings and 78 theodolite stations in a traverse, underground and surface,of more than 5 miles. Because of the exceptional length of the drive, an unusually high degree of reliability was required.The aim was for a maximum error at breakthrough of 1 ft 1 in 30,000, and to secure this, precise methods of linear measurement were necessary. Shaft plumbing in particular posed special difficulties.

Extractive metallurgy techniques currently employed to recover silver from primary ores and secondary scrap were reviewed and evaluated to identify and delineate metallurgical problems whose resolution would increase the supply of silver from domestic materials. The survey revealed that practically all primary silver is recovered by froth flotation concentration of various types of ores, followed by smelting and refining of the separate lead, copper, and zinc concentrates. Silver losses during the complex processing are, with rare exception, inconsequential. Furthermore, any silver production gain from base metal ores, which contribute about two-thirds of the total primary silver, is directly dependent no improvement in the market for the base metals. Statistical data on new and old silver scrap are wholly inadequate to make reliable conclusions about scrap processing problems and the possibility of increasing the recovery of silver from the many forms of secondary silver-bearing materials. The available information indicates (1) that efficient silver reclamation practices are employed by the larger users of silver, and (2) that recovery of additional secondary silver involves solution of problems of collection rather than of processing. Several possibilities exist for limited increases in silver production from primary ores by improvement in metallurgical practices. Specifically, research is needed to (1) solve the problem of recovering silver from the copper ores of the Copper Range district, Michigan; and (2) devise economically feasible methods for recovery of silver from presently marginal or submarginal ores char because of grade, location, and frequently complex nature cannot presently be exploited by conventional techniques.

This paper presents the main features of coal mining in Japan, as determined by the author while attending the International Coal Conference in October of 1963. The general economy of the country is considered, and the requirements for coking coal are outlined. Statistics and comments on production and consumption are then given, with accompanying cost figures, and the characteristics of Japanese coal mining are compared with those of Canada. Mining methods and underground transportation are covered, with emphasis on undersea mining. Finally, a description is given of a visit to the Miike colliery, the largest in Japan. I T was my privilege to attend the International Coal Conference held in Tokyo in October, 1963, to meet many prominent members of the Japan Coal Association and to visit one of the major coal fields. In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil, this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states. Information given on each heavy-oil deposit includes the following items: Field and formation, location, average or range of depth, average API gravity of oil, aver- age thickness of formation, areal extent of field, total productive wells drilled in field, discovery date of field, field status in 1963, cumulative production to Jan. 1, 1964, and all known types of secondary-recovery operations initiated (active and terminated) Fn the reservoirs. The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map, and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text. As of Jan. 1, 1964, 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place. It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history, such as the one in Missouri, were included, the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels. To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil, industry is developing technology in several types of thermal-recovery methods. Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study fur thermal-recovery techniques are: Lithology, depth, viscosity of reservoir fluids, gravity of oil, reservoir thickness, oil in place, and permeability and porosity.

This report describes the performance of 17 selected water-injection projects producing from Pennsylvanian-and Permian-age reservoirs. Illustrations depict reservoir structure and thickness, and production and injection history. A selected bibliography of publications pertaining to area oil recovery and geology is included. Tabulations of field and reservoir data reveal marked differences in the projects. Increased oil recovery resulted from injecting water in most cases; however, seven projects recovered less oil than the operators anticipated. Oil recovery by water injection ranged from 0.2 to 262 bbl per acre ft, or 0.1 to 22.5 pct of the initial stock-tank oil in place. Major reasons suggested for poor performance include: (1) Adverse directional horizontal permeability, (2) channeling of injected water through fractures or zones of high permeability, and (3) lack of containment of injected water. One 330-foot-deep project is among the first successful shallow water-floods in north Texas. Another project is the first successful Canyon sand-stone waterflood reported in the area. Previous gas injection in two Cisco sandstone projects did not prevent the reservoirs from responding favorably to waterflooding.

The advent of open nit mining permitted the development and processing of minerals never before thought possible. New equipment was needed; new techniques were devised; new methods were called for. This development and acquisition of new techniques, methods and equipment did not, however, stir the souls of our industry and educational leaders sufficiently to a recognition of the problem of people, especially the future development of the people needed in open-pit mining. The people problem has been and will be with us as long as there are two of them. The development of people will be required for the same reason. The problem of developing future personnel for open-pit mining is not what must be developed; that is known to all of us and can be briefly stated ashore and better of everything." As I see it, the real problem lies in determining (1) what personnel are really critical, (2) why are they critical and (3) how can we develop them.

SOME 20 years ago, upon finishing second year at the University of Manitoba, I was faced with the choice of whether I wanted to be a geologist or a chemist. Accordingly, I sought out Professor Brownell, Head of the Department of Geology, to ask him what a geologist did. His reply contained the statement that following graduation one went out into the field in northern Canada for 5 to 15 years to reduce to practice what had been learned at university. To a young man, very socially conscious, even one year, let alone 5 to 10, in a small mining community sounded like being banished to a monastery in the Himalayas and thus I turned to chemistry. Moving to the present, last month I asked a geologist, and then a mining engineer, what does the fresh graduate in their field do these days? The reply was: usually serve an apprenticeship for an indeterminate period either underground or in the field learning the job.

This study compiles data on the zircon resources of the Pacific Northwest States, Alaska, and California, to determine the productive capability of industrial concerns to make ductile zirconium and hafnium, and to investigate markets for the nonmetallic products of zircon. West coast zircon resources are large but mostly marginal to submarginal. Development of a stable and profitable zircon mining industry on the west coast will depend upon recovery and utilization of the other associated heavy minerals needed by regional and national markets. The west coast has the only completely integrated facility for processing zircon sand to reactor-grade zirconium and hafnium and for making fabricated products from these metals. The future of the zirconium metal industry appears to be good because of increased use of the metal for nuclear propulsion and power-generating plants.

Relationships of Noranda sulphide deposits to volcanic rocks are reviewed and chemical variations within the volcanic sequence are described. The assemblages of minor elements in the pyrites and pyrrhotites of the Noranda and l\llatagami deposits are similar and are characterized by a high content of cobalt, tin and other elements. Isotopic compositions of lead, other geochronological data and stratigraphically disposed zonal distributions of sulphides and minor elements indicate that the deposits were formed prior to folding and metamorphism. Lead isotope data indicate that the Matagami deposits, and several others, were probably formed about 2.95 x 109 years ago and that the Noranda deposits may be about 50 million years younger. The volcanic sequence at Noranda is younger than the thick sequences bordering it on the east and on the west. The relationships are consistent with the hypothesis that these strata-bound sul1>hide de-posits are coeval with their associated volcanic rocks. The Shortage of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I N many parts of the Western World attention has recently been drawn to the acute shortage of mining and metallurgical engineers produced by the universities. Naturally, the reasons for this shortage have been discussed, and various remedies for it have been proposed. In this paper, I want to examine some of them. It is now fairly generally ac-cepted among mining men that the easy attractions of modern urban life have left the career of mining in the metaphorical as well as in the literal backwoods. The industry finds it increasingly difficult to recruit adventurous and intelligent young men; for such men now seek their intellectual, if not physical, adventure in more glamorous occupations from a safe social base in suburbia. The salaries, opportunities and security offered by the mining industry do not complete effectively with the rewards offered by other industries and by commerce, taking into account the social disadvantages of a mining life. During the past decade, the miner-al industries have been faced with an increasing shortage of engineers. The point has now been reached where the shortage may be termed critical. This shortage may be attributed directly to declining enrollment in the mineral science programs offered by the universities on this continent. Although the reasons for declining enrollment are undoubtedly many, two major hypotheses may be postulated. The first is that high-school graduates are either unaware of the mineral industries and the opportunities in them or that they are aware of them but have somehow obtained a false image of their true nature. The second is that they are aware of the true nature of these industries and the opportunities they offer but find them exceedingly unattractive. The problem of dwindling enrollments has, in recent years, been subjected to a concerted attack by the industries and professions concerned. However, their efforts to date have been based essentially on the first hypothesis. Sufficient results are now available to suggest that either the methods of attack are inappropriate

The U.S. Treasury stocks of silver have been reduced at such a rapid rate to meet industrial and coinage requirements that they face exhaustion in 3 or 4 years. Alleviation of the silver problem will require increasing supply or reducing demand. This paper examines possible long-range resource development and research programs and improved secondary recovery. The possible reduction or elimination of silver in coinage and development and introduction of substitutes in the arts and industry are also discussed.

CANADA is not an old country we are just now planning to celebrate our lOOth Anniversary. Nonetheless, we have already developed some well-established traditions. One of the minor traditions is the standard speech on the need for more research and development in Canadian industry. I am sure that you have all listened to it many times -I certainly have given it more than once. Much as I am tempted to honour this tradition by repetition, I shall only give you a thumbnail sketch of the ancient address for the benefit of any unfortunate visitors who have not heard it before, and also to provide a base for some further ideas that I want to leave with you. Briefly, the traditional story is that, for a variety of historical and environmental reasons that I shall not attempt to describe in detail, research and development in Canada has grown up in a pattern that is ill adapted to foster the expansion of our manufacturing industries. The story continues by saying that research in the universities is of excellent quality but that we are very short of money to meet the expanding needs
