"Simple classification systems are now being used which will describe adequately the surface vegetation, the topography and the peat for any muskeg condition. Good progress is being made in determining some of the mechanical properties of muskeg and it is apparent that the science of soil mechanics will apply largely to these studies. Correlation is also indicated between shear strength as determined by the shear vane tester and vehicle performance. Several tracked vehicles are now available which perform well in muskeg and advances in this field have come rapidly in the past few years. Testing is under way on the largest of all muskeg vehicles -the thirty-five ton Musk Ox. This vehicle will fill the last gap for the oil industry and will make possible the movement of large drilling rigs at any season of the year."

Molybdenum has been successfully cast into static and rotating molds in conventional equipment used for casting titanium and zirconium. Melting was accomplished by using an arc potential of 36 to 40 volts with a current of 10,000 amperes. Pouring efficiency, after a skull had been formed in the crucible, averaged 70 percent. Techniques are described by which four successful castings were made. Tensile properties on specimens cut from one centrifugally cast tube averaged: Tensile strength, 39,800 p.s.i.; yield strength (0.1 pct. offset), 35,300 p.s.i.; elongation, nil; reduction in area, nil; impact strength, 2 ft.-lb.; hardness DPH (diamond pyramid hardness) 180. Mold reaction was not evident in shapes cast in machined graphite. This was not true, however, for rammed graphitic-base molds.

This report describes results of beneficiation and smelting studies conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines on chromite samples from the Emma Belle and Seiad Creek prospects in the Seiad Creek area, northern California. Samples were chosen from this area because the ore is typical of disseminated types that represent a sizable domestic reserve. The two samples were similar in composition, and both responded in like manner to gravity beneficiation. As the ore was banded, considerable coarse gangue was rejected in laboratory sink-float from a minus-3/4-inch, plus-6-mesh fraction without excessive chromium loss at a medium density of 3.32. An average of 85.6 percent of the chromium was recovered in the sink product, which analyzed 35 percent chromic oxide (Cr203). Tabling yielded concentrates containing 49 percent or more Cr203; however, recoveries, ranged from only 33 to 45 percent. A combination of tabling and electrostatic separation of the table middlings showed that the chromium recovery could be increased to about 73 percent; the composite concentrate averaged 53 percent Cr203.

This study by the Federal Bureau of Mines concerns different methods of face haulage used with various types of continuous-mining machines, mobile-loading machines, and track-mounted equipment under varying roof and bottom conditions and in coalbeds of varying thicknesses. This report is the ninth in a series on mechanical mining in bituminous coal mines. Reference to the reports previously published is made in appendix III, p. 106. Use of modern mining equipment in bituminous coal mines has resulted in increased productivity at the face. This especially is true where continuous-mining machines are used, and the supervision is good. Previous methods and equipment for moving coal from the face became inadequate and had to be improved to restore balance to the mining systems. Sometimes new equipment was needed to improve the face haulage, and in some instances, a new combination of existing equipment was used. Detailed studies of face haulage methods were made at 13 mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois to compare their effectiveness and to describe fully the conditions under which each method was used.

INJURY DATA and experience at coal mines in the United States for 1956 and 1956 are presented in this publication with a minimum of interpretation and comment because of the numerous tables required to afford detailed comparisons between the 2 years. Corresponding table., for 1955 and 1956 follow in consecutive order under the following general sections: (A) General injury experience: Tables I to II: contain current data on number of fatal and nonfatal injuries, frequency and severity rates, and average severity. (B) Selected injury data: Tables 12 to 77: Contain current data on causes of injuries, distribution of injuries by part of body injured, clays of disability, extent of hand and machine loading, experience by employment and production groups, and various other operating factors and physical conditions related to the occurrence of injuries at the Nation's coal mines. This paper describes all occurrences of barite in Arizona that were known or reported to the authors. The history, ownership, production, and geologic setting are discussed for most of the deposits. The uses and specifications of product grades are briefly discussed. Seventy-five deposits were examined in 9 of the 14 counties of the State. The descriptions are given under county headings. No occurrences were reported in the four northeastern counties of Coconino, Navajo, Apache, and Greenlee, nor in Santa Cruz in the southern part of the State. From about half of the deposits examined, 55 samples were taken; of these, 45 were for chemical analysis, and 8 larger samples, ranging from 100 to 350 pounds, for beneficiation tests. A 30-ton bulk sample was taken for pilot-plant tests. Bench-scale flotation tests of the eight samples employing several different procedures and reagent combinations yielded marketable-grade barite products with barite recoveries ranging from 60 to 97 percent. Five of the samples contained enough fluorspar to warrant its recovery. Acid-grade concentrates, which accounted for fluorspar recoveries of 45 to 70 percent, were obtained from three of these ores. Batch laboratory tests of a representative portion of the 30-ton bulk sample revealed that acid-grade fluorspar and high-grade barite concentrates could be recovered. Results of the laboratory and continuous pilot-plant tests of this ore will be presented in a separate report.

THIS GLOSSARY is published lay the Bureau of Mines as a contribution too the mining literature to fill a long-felt need for a compilation of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The first step toward preparation of the glossary was taken in October 1955 when the Diamond Core Drill Manufacturers Association (DCDMA) proposed that the Bureau of Mines undertake the cons compilation and publication of a glossary of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The work was authorized in July 1956, and a preliminary draft of the glossary was completed in may 1958. Copies of the draft were submitted for review to members of the DCDMA and appropriate personnel of the Bureau of Mines. The final draft, incorporating the many helpful suggestions of the reviewers representing both the diamond-drilling industry and the Bureau of Mines, was completed in March 1959.

AN ADEQUATE, dependable, and continuing supply of raw materials is indispensable to tile the United States and its industries in meeting the needs of an expanding Population, a rising standard of living, and the national security. The primary responsibility for appraising the status of the country's mineral supply and for making appropriate recommendations within the executive branch and to the Congress has been pinned in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In fulfilling its role of governmental responsibility for raw-material supplies and their efficient utilization, the Bureau of Mines has analyzed the factors in current and future mineral supplies and demands and has developed 87 statements for specific commodities that assess the national position and problems for these metals, minerals, and mineral fuels. These statements, which constitute the chapters of this volume, are based on lire assumption that nearly till production and consumption of materials in the United States are to be by private individuals and organizations, in accordance with the Nation's devotion to a private-enterprise economy.

IN THE HALF-CENTURY that has passed since the Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910, the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau's scientists, engineers, and other personnel have helped significantly in improving health and safety in the mineral industries and have contributed substantially in conserving the Nation's mineral resources through improved techniques in the mining, treatment, and use of mineral commodities. From Bureau laboratories have come new materials for industry and better methods of extracting and processing minerals and mineral fuels. Bureau safety investigations-complemented by equipment testing and by programs of mine inspection and education-have brought about safer and more healthful working conditions.

There is evidence that study of minerals now considered to have susceptibilities too low for magnetic separation should be continued. Present concepts may be false. INFORMATION on magnetic properties of minerals other than magnetite is scanty and sometimes erroneous. Often there is no information at all. W. R. Crane's table of tractive forces published in 1901 is still the best guide in the field, but Crane's data can be used as a guide only, since he ignored such important factors as impurities in the minerals, size, and packing effect. During the 1930's work by the U. S. Bureau of Mines added greatly to knowledge of the behavior of certain minerals in a magnetic field. The USBM bulletin gave for the first time complete magnetic characteristics for magnetite and fragmentary data for a few other minerals. The work reported here covers a study of the magnetic-susceptibility relationships of the wolframite series of minerals and sphalerites as related to their chemical compositions. Theories are proposed to explain divergences found from commonly accepted beliefs. Gouy Method for Determining Magnetic Susceptibility: The Gouy principle has been adequately described in the literature1-3 and applied in various ways.'- It may be summarized by stating that a body of material (gas, liquid, solid, or powder mixed with gas or liquid) of cylindrical shape changes in apparent weight if suspended with one end in a zone of higher magnetic field strength than is found in that portion of the field surrounding the other end of the cylinder. This may be expressed as K2 - K1 A (H2 - H2) - mg. [1] In determining the susceptibility of mineral specimens by the Gouy method, the mineral is reduced to a fine powder and packed in a glass weighing tube. This paper is one of a series covering the mineral resources of the Nation. It briefly describes most of the known tungsten deposits of New Mexico. Most of the descriptions are from field examinations by the senior author. Reported tungsten occurrences that were not visited are listed below: Colfax County: Occurrences of ferberite in thin veins in Willow Creek near Elizabethtown.4/ Dona Ana County: Small, low-grade occurrences of scheelite near the summit of the Organ Mountains about 15 miles east of Las Cruces. Hidalgo County: Scheelite reported in the Daisy mine 7 miles southeast of Hachita. Ores are carbonates containing copper, gold, silver, and bismuth.5/

The marketing of nonferrous metals and of the ores and concentrates from which these metals are recovered is a fascinating trade, international in character, sensitive to every change in the economic tide, and complex in its organization. Each individual metal has its own marketing mechanism; no two are exactly alike. The differences sometimes are a matter of tradition rather than of necessity, but usually they have developed because of the very nature of the problems of producing or consuming the individual metal. This description, because of limitations of space, can do no more than indicate the major aspects of the trade and touch lightly on the marketing structure of each metal. The dictionary states that a market is a "meeting of people for selling and buying." In the case of nonferrous metals this meeting may occur on a half-dozen different occasions between the time the ore has been first mined and the time the refined metal is available for use by industry; or it may not occur at all until after the metal itself has been rolled, drawn, stamped, cast, or forged into a useful semifabricated shape. To illustrate: A Chilean miner may sell his small ore production to a custom mill, which produces concentrates that are sold to an ore dealer, who finances the shipments of the concentrates to a United States custom smelter, which buys these' concentrates for conversion into blister, which is subsequently refined into electrolytic copper and sold. Conversely, much of the production of aluminum is in the hands of integrated concerns that mine bauxite, convert bauxite to alumina, smelt the alumina to produce aluminum, and then fabricate the aluminum into semifinished or even finished products before title to the material changes hands for the first time. Some nonferrous ores are not converted into metal at all but are sold by the miners or dealers directly b the ultimate consumers. A good example would be chrome ores used by the chemical industry. And of course a substantial part of the commerce in nonferrous metals is in scrap, which is the reconversion into useful form of metals that have long since been mined and smelted. Following is a resume of activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction o1 injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines July 24, 1946, after consultation with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors while inspecting bituminous coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior October 8, 1953, after further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bitumi¬nous coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reporting to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Mine Safety Code. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority (under Executive Order 9728) was removed June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

Valuations in the mineral industry differ from those of other enterprises because mines and oil wells have a definitive life so cannot be considered a perpetuity. This requires that in any mineral-property evaluation the recovery of invested capital is necessary during the life of the property. Capital writeoffs for nonextractive industries are assumed to be continuously plowed back to sustain the operation and produce yields on the capital invested. The extractive or mineral industry, however, generally attempts to return to the investor both interest and principal during the life of a property. Normally this is done currently and the dividend includes both items. Where the mineral properly possesses large reserves and the life factor approximates a perpetuity, the return on investment is generally comparable to that of industrial stocks. The valuation of a mineral property, at best, is based on educated estimates and judgment factors. This is particularly true as it relates to estimating selling prices over a long term or assessing the quality of management. Also, it is possible to make various assumptions as to rapidity of working out the deposit, varying time for start-up of operations, varying earning rates, so as to obtain different results with the same basic facts. Thus it is not surprising that two engineers, irrespective of their abilities, may not agree exactly even when given the same facts, but their results should be close enough to be used in establishing a fair value for trading purposes. The valuation is no better than the source of basic data and the soundness of judgment factors. Fundamentally the basic principles of mineral valuation are similar for base metals, sulphur, oil, or any other mineral. Each mineral, however, requires an engineer to have a knowledge of such factors as its occurrence, distribution, mining and processing methods, and marketing problems in order to gather and analyze all the facts and data that have a bearing on the earning potential of the property. This chapter deals with the systems of laws by which governments regulate the exploration for and production of the minerals within their jurisdictions. It is a summary, restricted by necessary space limitations, of material assembled by the author for a forthcoming publication of the United States Bureau of Mines, "Summary of Mining and Petroleum Laws of the World." (Information Circular, 1959.) The present study is organized in three parts, dealing with (1) the historical background of these legal systems, (2) laws of the United States, and (3) laws of other countries of the world. The reader's attention is invited to the acknowledgments at the end of the chapter, which inadequately express the appreciation due those who have assisted in the collection of this material. Part I. Historical Development of Major Western Systems of Land Tenancy with Respect to the Ownership and Control of Minerals The use of metals in primitive societies was largely confined to the manufacture of weapons for self-preservation. The ruler's control over copper, then brass, then iron, was essential to maintenance of his own ascendancy at home and his group's position against neighbors who had access to similar metals. Ancient societies were thus characterized by the ruling group's ownership of minerals and metals. The Egyptian civilization, which emerged in the fourth millenium B.C. upon the agricultural subjugation of the lower valley of the Nile, was responsible for extensive development of the upper valley as a source of mineral wealth. The production of gold during the height of that civilization has been estimated at $30,000,000 per year, thus equaling the early placers of California and Australia. The mines of Egypt were the property of the Pharaohs and were controlled at their direction. Greek mining developed a different scheme of land tenancy which more closely resembled modem concepts. The endlessly changing pattern of mineral supply and demand offers opportunity to the alert and can bring disaster to the unwary. The discovery of ore bodies, the invention of extractive processes, the provision of new transport facilities, the political stabilization of underdeveloped areas, and many other changes can increase supply dramatically. Such new outpourings of mineral wealth from ore bodies bring fortunes to their developers, and consumers frequently find their competitive positions decidedly improved by new and cheap sources of supply. On the other hand, operators of marginal properties can find competition from newly opened high-grade mines intolerable. Consumers that have depended on the products of nearby, high-cost mines may find new, remote, low-cost supplies advantageous only to their competitors. The invention of new prospecting methods can have spectacular effects. Shortly after World War I the discovery rate of petroleum pools began to decline. The leading prospecting technique of that day, the projection downward of surface reflections of geologic structure, was proving less rewarding. Prophets foretold an oil shortage in the near future. But at that very moment scientists were perfecting the application of seismic waves to reveal underground oil-bearing geologic structures. As these geophysical methods were put into commercial use the whole outlook changed-the problem of the 1930's became how to cope with the surplus from discovery, not how to meet the ever rising demand. Many lead mines were being abandoned as unprofitable about this same time because the penalties charged by smelters for the zinc in the ores and concentrates more than counterbalanced the payments for lead and silver. THE TOTAL VALUE of sales of coal-chemical materials in the 10-year period 1948-57 increased 34 percent or at an average annual rate of approximately 3.5 percent. According to the Chemical Industry Facts Book, third edition, 1957, published by Manufacturing Chemists' Association, Inc., the production of industrial chemicals since 1939 "has grown at au average rate of about 10 percent" a year (p. 7). The rapid growth of the chemical industry increased requirements of chemical raw materials at a faster pace than could be supplied by coal carboniza¬tion, and view sources of supply became necessary. The petroleum industry in the past decade increased tremendously the flow of chemical raw materials to the chemical industry through the processing of crude petroleum and natural gas. Whereas coal carbonization supplied most of the raw materials for manufacturing synthetic organic chemicals before World War 11, coke ovens supplied only about 40 percent of the total used in 1957. Although the proportion of chemical raw materials supplied to the chemical industry by coke-oven operators declined, this source of supply is large and important to our economy. In 1957, the value of coal-chemical materials sold, including surplus gas used by producing companies, totaled $358 million, compared with $267 million in 1948. Major factors that contributed to this gain were (1) increased production of all coal chemicals and (2) higher prices for tax and light-oil products. Gains in output of coal chemicals resulted principally from expansion in carbonizing capacity of coke plants owned and operated by the iron and steel industry, as yields of the basic coal¬-chemical materials (tar, ammonia, light oil, and gas) varied only slightly during the 10 years under review.
