For the past decade, demand for Australian resources has reached unprecedented levels, thanks mainly to the emerging superpowers of China and India. Meeting demand has meant miners and governments alike have ploughed billions into capital expenditure projects for logistics infrastructure such as roads, rail and ports, to support the ever expanding number of mines and mineral volumes. In more recent times, however, the effect of the global economic crisis has led to a decline in demand for Australian minerals. The downturn has seen companies lay off workers in droves, and delay or cancel expansion projects, in an attempt to preserve cash flow. Whilst the current economic cycle has hit the mining sector hard, it is an opportunity for companies to take stock of their existing operations and plan for the future. As mining companies grapple for scarce capital resources, it is inevitable that industry consolidation will ensue. This presents challenges and opportunities for both buyers and sellers alike, looking to expand operations, or sell off assets to raise cash.

Equipment-washing facilities at Freeport-McMo-Ran?s Sierrita Mine in Arizona produce a mixture of oil and water that was difficult to dispose of easily or cheaply. However, after some changes in the facility, waste oil is now used as part of the mining process. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., head-quartered in Phoenix, AZ, operates copper, gold and molybdenum mines. It is the world?s largest producer of molybdenum. Heavy equipment used at the mine is hosed off periodically in the wash bay. The dirty water and oil mixture drains into the sump next to the bay. Oil was manually collected for disposal. This was a tedious and dirty process Mine managers sought a more efficient method of removing the oil. Instead of spending the time and effort skimming the tank with vacuums or sorbents, they enlisted the help of Abanaki Corp., manufacturer of the Model 4 Oil Grabber. Engineers designed the sump to utilize prevailing winds to blow the oil to one corner. This was the ideal place for the Abanaki skimmer. The skimmer removes the oil and discharges it into a plastic storage container. ?This reduces the time needed to keep the area clean, and the staff can focus on cleaning the equipment rather than worrying about the oil,? according to Jay Salerno, construction manager at the Sierrita Mine. Salerno is considering adding an optional oil concentrator to the skimmer to make the process even more efficient. The concentrator would remove any water picked up by the belt and return it to the sump, leaving nearly pure oil for disposal. Because the mine is located in the Sonoran desert, most of the water evaporates in the hot, dry air and is not reused.

"The Schlumberger configuration used in geoelectrical sounding is slightly adapted here to obtain reliable data for both shallow and deep penetration depths from the same survey. In this configuration, two kinds of current electrode half-spacings are used: the first enables construction of vertical electrical resistivity sounding (VES) curves for shallow depths (<50 m), and the second for depths =250 m. For a given VES location, two field curves are measured and interpreted using two standard approaches. Practical characteristics of such a modified configuration are illustrated with two field applications in Syria. The first aims to characterize the structure of Quaternary and recent deposits in the Al-Ghab depression region, and the second deals with exploration for phosphatic sedimentary units in the Al-Sharquieh mine. La configuration de Schlumberger normalement employée dans les levés géoélectriques a été légèrement modifiée afin d’obtenir des données fiables à faible et forte profondeur durant le même levé. Dans cette nouvelle configuration, deux types de demi-espacements des électrodes sont utilisés : le premier permet le développement de courbes de sondage de résistivité électrique verticales (REV) pour les faibles profondeurs (<50 m), et le second atteint des profondeurs =250 m. Pour une localité REV donnée, deux courbes de champs sont donc mesurées et interprétées grâce à deux approches standardisées. Les caractéristiques pratiques de cette configuration modifiée sont illustrées par deus exemples d’application en Syrie. The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The company has since committed US$1.5 billion to construct the mine, mill and associated facilities. The first of two 50-kt/d (55,000-stpd) mill and flotation lines is currently being commissioned while engineering and construction continues on the second line. A high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) will ultimately take total throughput to 130 kt/d (142,000 stpd). The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level and it is situated in a wide east-west valley. Except for one small outcrop (Peñasquito), the area is covered by up to 30 m (98 ft) of alluvium.

People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

Introduction A Hypothetical Scenario: Suppose that your company&apos;s research department has developed a new device which represents a significant innovation. You would like to begin selling it as soon as possible. The new device has not been publicly disclosed. You&apos;re not sure about what type of intellectual property protection you should be seeking, or when you should be seeking it. As discussed below, assuming that the costs are worth it, a patent application probably should be filed before any public disclosure is made. In general, if you do not file a patent application prior to a public disclosure, you will lose rights. Major Types of Intellectual Property In this paper, intellectual property protection is broadly discussed. Practical steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of losing intellectual property rights (and maximizing the possibility of benefiting from your company&apos;s intellectual property) are outlined at the end of this paper. The issues discussed in this paper are somewhat complex, because a number of outcomes are possible, depending on the facts. It is strongly recommended that you seek legal advice in your jurisdiction in connection with any particular circumstances relating to intellectual property rights. "Intellectual property" refers to a number of different types of rights. The major types of intellectual property are: (i) patents; (ii) trademarks; and (iii) copyright. Trade secrets are also usually considered to be a type of intellectual property, and they are also discussed in this paper because of their importance. In general, each of these types of intellectual property protects different subject matter, although there can be some overlap. Intellectual property rights are generally territorial in nature. The scope of protection of a type of intellectual property in a country (e.g., patent protection) depends on whether the specific national requirements for protection have been met.

With the success of their existing casino operation on the Ohio River in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the Indiana Gaming Co., LP planned a major expansion of the current facilities. This expansion includes a second 1400+/- car parking garage, a new surface parking lot, elevated walkways, and a new floating casino that will double their present square footage and consolidate all of the gaming activity to one floor. In March of 2006 Richard Goettle, Inc. was awarded the general contract to construct a 260? x 520? boat slip for the new Argosy VII floating casino. An Open Cell® bulkhead system was specified as the means for constructing the new slip. Our contract included the purchase and installation of 300,000 square feet of PS27.5 sheet pile, excavation of 230,000 cubic yards of soil, and a 3300 square foot Mechanically Stabilized Earth wall.

While the United States and the rest of the world struggles with record-setting oil prices Canadian oil sands producers are ramping up production to meet demand for oil while also fighting against a host of negative images. In recent months, the price of oil has skyrocketed. Most of that oil comes from Saudi Arabia. In Alberta, Canada there are unconventional oil reserves that rival those in Saudi Arabia in the vast Canadian oil sands, sometimes called the tar sands. Proponents of the oil sands say that Alberta?s oil sands can be a secure source of oil and energy for the United States for many years to come. With new mining and drilling projects, the industry has said that it could quadruple its production to nearly 4 million bbl/day by 2020. Time magazine once called the oil sands, ?Canada?s greatest buried treasure that could satisfy the world?s demand for petroleum for the next century.? So why hasn?t the United States embraced this close, politically secure source of energy? Because, getting usable fuel from the oil sands can be a dirty business, say opponents. The oil sands are a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen. It is a heavy, black, thick oil. Oil sands can be mined and processed to extract the oil-rich bitumen, which is then refined into oil. The bitumen cannot be pumped from the ground in its natural state. Instead, tar sand deposits are mined, usually using strip mining or openpit techniques, or the oil is extracted by underground heating with additional upgrading. These methods require a huge amount of energy and water and produce a large amount of carbon emissions. Environmental groups that have long spoken out against the oil sands projects got some political backing in the United States in June when a group of mayors from large U.S. cities spoke out against the oil sands, as did presumptive Democratic candidate for U.S. president Barack Obama?s senior energy advisor. During a convention of large-city mayors in Miami, FL, Alberta?s oil sands were singled out in a nonbinding resolution calling for national guidelines to track the lifecycle impact of different types of fossil fuels. The resolution urges cities not to use unconventional sources of energy with a large carbon footprint, such as liquid coal and oil shale and oil sands.

The subject of surface mine development is large. This section covers the fundamental concepts involved in both the open pit mining of thick or steeply dipping deposits as well as the strip mining of thin, shallow, and relatively flat-lying seams or beds. Design involves the marrying of geometries, ore and waste characteristics, equipment, and economics so that the desired result is achieved. Generally, there are many possible combinations from which to choose. For example, extraction over a short time period requires one strategy while quite another is applied for longer times. Variations in supply and demand require some flexibility of operation. Customer requirements impose certain constraints regarding the set of possible designs. Over recent years, planning and operating considerations for surface mining imposed by environmental requirements have increased markedly. There have, at the same time, been enormous advances made in the design aids available to the mine planner. Computer simulation of the various options, whether it be for mine design or equipment selection, provides detailed information for decision making in real time. A significant challenge to the engineer/planner is how to best use the aids avail-able. Because of the widespread use of commercially available and in-house computer software by industry, this section does not deal with the details of planning (for basic coverage of mine development, see Section 7). Rather, some of the basic concepts are stressed. The principles involved in equipment sizing and selection are discussed. A highly important but sometimes over-looked aspect of planning, haul road design, is also covered. For surface mining operations of the future, in-pit crushing and conveying will become even more important. Some of the considerations for application evaluation are included. The section concludes with some future concepts for surface mining.

Caving mining methods that are based on a planned caving of rock above and/or at times surrounding the material being mined can be classified in three broad categories: longwall mining, sublevel caving, and block caving. Each of the three methods involves a distinct technology as well as art of operation. Each requires a relatively large, regular, and predictable ore body. As a rule, the effect of mining results in some form of impact or change on the surface. Operationally, underground caving methods are characterized by high productivity as well as a high percentage of extraction of the mineral being mined. A key element for the productivity of this form of mining is the ability to standardize the various elements of work taking place underground. Therefore, work-men may perform a specialized role rather than function as all-around miners. Further, the nature of the mining methods lend them to a high level of mechanization. Operations and manpower can be centralized into a relatively small area where supervision can be concentrated and therefore be more effective. Productivity as well as safety benefits thereby. The caving method is unique in that the exploitation openings are deliberately destroyed by the process of mining. Rock mechanics principles focus on the ensurance and the propagation of the cave as well as the continuance of the mine openings designed to extract the broken ore. As a rule, production operations are designed to maintain a steady, continuous flow of ore from the extraction areas. This steady flow rather than an intermittent flow tends to promote good caving action as well as reduce hangups.

During the last 20 years, more than 80 km (50 miles) of tunnels have been constructed in the Los Angeles, CA area. Recent projects include The East Central Interceptor Sewer (ECIS), completed in 2004. It spans more than 18 km (11 miles). The Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS), completed in 2005, spans 11 km (7 miles). And the 2-km (1.3-mile) Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s Gold Line Eastside Extension (MCGLEE) was completed in 2006. All of the tunnel routes lay beneath heavily populated urban environments so minimizing ground surface settlement was critical to the success of the projects. Previous tunneling efforts in the Los Angeles area using open shield methods resulted in significant settlement that damaged roads, utilities, buildings and other structures. Earth pressure balance (EPB), or slurry machines, were specified for these projects to reduce subsidence risk. The contractors chose EPB tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the work. The closed and pressured face of the EPB TBM reduces loss of ground at the tunnel face and, when the machines are used in combination with gasketed pre-cast tunnel liners and backfill grout behind the installed segments, losses from over-cut of the excavated surface are also reduced.

The Gordonsville Operation of Pasminco US Inc. along with the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech studied, developed and implemented a pilot scale hydrometallurgical facility for the industrial recovery of germanium and gallium. This paper describes the joint testing and engineering program that culminated in this successful process. 1. Introduction The Pasminco US Inc. (PAS), Gordonsville Operation, has been producing zinc concentrate continuously since 1975. Within the zinc concentrate, several byproduct elements were found to be significantly concentrated including gallium and germanium. The gallium and germanium replace zinc and other metals within the crystal lattice structure of the zinc mineral (sphalerite) and are concentrated in the same manner as the zinc mineral. This concentrate is then sent to the Pasminco Clarksville Zinc Refinery for further processing. Within the hydrometallurgical zinc-processing plant at Clarksville, a residue is formed that contains a majority of the impurities that would otherwise contaminate or hinder the zinc process. Approximately 5,000 tons of residue is formed annually containing approximately 0.80% gallium and 0.60% germanium along with significant quantities of iron, zinc, silica, and lead. Pasminco currently sells this residue for the germanium value. Until recently, no revenue for the gallium was obtained from the sale of the residue.

"Gold-bearing mineralization at Anomaly A occurs in polydeformed Ordovician turbidites of the Kendall Mountain Formation of the St. Croix belt in southwestern New Brunswick, and is hosted by WSWtrending, shallow-dipping, brittle-ductile high-strain zones associated with the latest stage of the second of four regional deformation events. Gold-bearing syn-deformational stockwork, massive, and multiply brecciated quartz-sulfide veined zones form irregular pods and sheets up to several meters thick, which contain arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, stibnite, and a variety of rare minerals that are gold-bearing. Mineralized zones are enveloped by locally auriferous, weakly to intensely altered wall rock. Vein paragenesis includes: (1) early (pre- to syn-D2) quartz-chlorite veins that are largely the product of migration of quartz by pressure solution; (2) crosscutting, multiphase, vuggy quartz-sulfide veins that contain most of the gold and are interpreted to be structurally controlled; (3) late, crosscutting, nondeformed, non-gold-bearing veins containing laumontite, chlorite, muscovite, quartz, fluorite, and base metal sulfides. Carbonate-poor alteration associated with zones of gold mineralization is lithology-specific, and appears to reflect overprinting of multiple events. Major elements removed during alteration include Si, Na, Mn, and Mg. The minor and trace elements removed include Co, Li, Sc, and possibly Sr, Ni, and Zn. Minor and trace elements added include Au, Ag, As, Sb, S, and possibly F, Cu, Pb, and Zr. On the basis of proximity, time constraints, and a similar ore mineral assemblage, gold mineralization at Anomaly A is interpreted to be a distal equivalent of the intrusion-related gold mineralization at the nearby Clarence Stream Main zone deposit. "The measured response of residential structures is a critical indicator of troublesomeor potentially damaging ground vibrations. A study was conducted to evaluate theresponse of structures situated in the periphery of four open-pit coal mines in India. Although, most of the structures were at far-off distances from the present blasting sites, an attempt was made to document the response of structures to blast vibration for future applications to optimize the blast designs for the safety of the structures. The study involved a total 215 blasts, employing one-, two- and three-hole calibration study, and production blasts. The bench height varied from 7.5 m to 42 m, and boreholes loaded with emulsion and slurry explosives were 250, 260, 270 and 310 mm in diameter. The explosive detonated in a blast were between 300-198400 kg whereas in a delay it was 33-24800 kg. Up to 12 tri-axial vibration sensors were located in overburden along a linear array from 25 m to 6.5 km distance from the blasts. Altogether, 1512 blast vibration signatures were recorded. Production and specially fi red single-charge blasts allowed the determination of natural ground frequency. The fundamental frequency of the structures ranged between 3.13 to 10.6 Hz, the same as those of the ground vibrations. The amplifi cation of vibration in the structures was in the range of 1.6 to 5.6. The study details the interaction between ground vibrations and selected structures, and the means to reduce amplifi cation of vibrations in the structures and persistence of vibrations through improved blast design."

After the primary or secondary lead production the bullion lead is remelted and charged into a vessel with following refining process. The removing of arsenic, antimony and tin takes place by salt slags or oxidizing gases like air or pure oxygen. Due to the increasing lead price, Messer Austria GmbH in cooperation with the institute of Nonferrous Metallurgy at the University of Leoben have developed a new process named OXIPOT for the refining of tin, arsenic and antimony. The OXIPOT process is in principle based on purging technology with a ceramic or steel purging device. This leads to an increased retention time of the refining products due to the deeper bath level and an optimized specific reaction volume concerning the bubble size. This paper describes the process, pilot plant, and thermodynamic calculations for the optimization concerning the selectivity of element removal.
