Unprecedented price fluctuations have opened competitiveness issues, while the rapid growth of the Chinese market has created challenges both inside and outside China. Recent technical developments in battery energy storage, coatings, castings and chemical applications of lead and zinc will be reviewed together with the influence of these trends on end use markets.

An effective prototype face support system to minimize rockfalls in rockfall-prone mines was developed and patented during a project sponsored by the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC). An experimental development model (XDM) roof support unit was developed and evaluated. Mines with rockfall problems in the face areas can use the roof support system to reduce fatalities and injuries in the face area of stopes. The roof support system consists of two similar support units connected to each other via two crank mechanisms. Each unit consists of a headboard supported by a ?wishbone? structure (top and bottom leg). In the first design a threaded bar with struts similar to a scissors jack keeps the legs apart. (In the final version that was field trialed, the threaded bar mechanism was replaced with a hydraulic cylinder). All the components are manufactured from steel. To move the system forward the first support unit is collapsed, the second remaining in the loaded position. The first unit then hangs from the second unit to which it is connected. The first collapsed unit is then manually cranked forward and prestressed. If the required position is still not achieved, the other unit is released and moved forward. The specification for the system was determined and presented at a workshop with industry participants. Different concepts were developed and evaluated against the system specifications. A technology demonstrator was then developed and tested on surface. The technology demonstrator development process included detail design, building and testing of components and subsystems, design reviews and the building and commissioning of the technology demonstrator. The testing of the technology demonstrator was done in a 500-ton hydraulic press, in a mock-up stope and underground. A risk analysis, in which technical, logistical and economic aspects were assessed, was done to determine the critical areas of the system. During the next phase of the project working prototypes were developed for underground tests and evaluation. This process indicated that it was necessary to adjust the system specifications and a redesign was called for. In an iterative process test units were built for purposes of evaluation, specification verification and field trialing. After the successful conclusion of the trials the equipping of a complete production stope started for purposes of integrating the system into the current mining process.

There are a couple of dozen junior platinum mining companies coming into existence in Southern African and most intend to mine, concentrate the PGM?s in a flotation product and sell the concentrate to one of the major producers in South Africa. The price they will receive for their product and hence the return they achieve for their investment will depend upon the large number of factors that influence the market for such a product. Unfortunately the number of buyers is severely limited as it is dominated by the two major local producers, Impala Platinum and Anglo Platinum. Furthermore the current smelting technology has limited capacity for UG2 concentrates and high nickel concentrates will quickly fill any available base metal refining capacity. Few if any overseas buyers can compete for the bulky flotation concentrate produced. This paper will explore those factors such as metal recoveries, metal prices, operating costs, capacity constraints, deleterious elements, transport issues, metal premiums and discounts that are in play, types of flotation concentrates, processing capital costs, PGM grades, etc and their impact up on what smelters and refiners might be prepared to pay for such PGM concentrates. Ultimately simple graphs and equations can be developed for probably payment terms for such concentrates. Those who negotiate well will move to the higher return section of the envelope and those who use the concentrator facilities to produce the most saleable combination of flotation concentrates will enhance their returns. A deep and firm understanding of the issues surrounding this market is necessary in order to negotiate the best possible price for the seller.

Surface mining applies to extraction of mineral resources from water and sediments of rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans; from solutions circulating through broken rock and soil; and from rock and soil excavated from the earth. Surface mining is responsible for the majority of mineral production in the United States and a substantial portion of the world?s total production. This section deals specifically with extraction methods which employ mechanical processes in a relatively dry environment to free minerals from the earth. The following section, Section 15, deals exclusively with aqueous methods. With recognition of the importance of reclamation in all activities which temporarily disturb the earth?s ecosystems, it is appropriate to classify mechanical extraction methods as either deferred reclamation or concurrent reclamation. Deferred reclamation is necessary when the shape and logistics of the excavation require that it remain open throughout the productive life of he project. Upon exhaustion of economic reserves, the opening is then reclaimed in a manner consistent with public safety, environmental acceptability, and land use policy. Methods employing deferred reclamation are commonly referred to as open pit or quarry mining. Metallic ores, industrial minerals, and coal are all extracted using open pit methods. Typical examples are provided in Chapter 14.1.

This section deals with one of the most fascinating aspects of mining the evaluation of mine investment opportunities. Be-fore proceeding further, it is important to clarify the meaning of some fundamental terms used frequently in the text. 6.0.1.1 Mine Valuation vs. Evaluation The words "valuation" and "evaluation" in a mining context are often used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this section, a distinction is made between the two terms in accordance with commonly accepted practice. The word valuation in a mining project context has the rather narrow meaning of placing a dollar or other currency value on the worth of the project as a whole. In other words, the value of a mining project refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of that property. As such, the major item of interest is, "what is the mine worth?," or `what is the value of the mine?" The value of a mining project may actually be determined in the marketplace at any specific point in time, or it may be estimated by one of several methods. Every mineral project or mine is based on a geologic entity-an ore (mineral) deposit. A well-defined mineral deposit and its associated geologic characteristics are the only aspects of a project that cannot be altered. Mine plans can be modified to exploit the deposit using alternative approaches and yielding similar results. A variety of processing methods also are often available producing generally comparable results. Major modifications can be made to other aspects of the project without substantially changing project economics. However, all engineering and metallurgical aspects of a mine must be accommodated to the spe¬cific location and geologic characteristics of the deposit. Geologic data and interpretations form the foundation for both mine evaluation and mine production by providing esti¬mates of reserves and essential information for mine planning and process design or control. Proper geologic work requires a keen awareness of and an ability to anticipate the technical requirements of geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and other specialists. In bygone days, the mineral engineer spent most of his/her time on the technical aspects of designing, building, and managing mineral operations. In the last few decades, mostly since the 1960s, increasing amounts of engineering man power and time are spent dealing with federal, state, and local government agencies, laws, and regulations. It is not possible to plan, design, build, or operate mines, mills, smelters, or even office buildings without detailed consideration of government regulations and permitting requirements dealing with environment, worker health and safety, etc. The four chapters of this section provide an overview of the social, legal, political, environmental, and health and safety aspects of mineral enterprise. The section sets the stage for the working engineer/geologist in industry, government, consulting, or academe and points the direction for more detailed study in each of these areas.

Section 25 has been assembled to give the geological, mining, or metallurgical engineer an overview of some of the important downstream operations that typically follow mining activities. This subject is obviously too broad and complex to be covered in detail within this Handbook. However, the engineer will be interested to learn about the basic fundamentals, and especially how they might affect the economics of the total project from prospecting and mining through to metals recovery and marketing. In this way, it is hoped that the engineer will have a better overall appreciation for the technical and commercial prospects of a mining and metal-producing project.

With the increased focus on the need for more uranium mines, this paper presents the design process currently underway for the development of the Millennium deposit in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. This deposit, located 630 - 750 m below surface, will be accessed by two shafts and will be mined by blasthole stoping methods at less than 500 t/d. Mining grade will approximate two per cent U3O8 and mine life is expected to be six to seven years. The project is a joint venture between Cameco, AREVA and JCU. This paper discusses in detail methods used to predict worker radiation exposures, the methods used to monitor the work environment and procedures unique to the uranium industry necessary to minimise worker radiation exposures.

Traditional cycle theory would postulate that if you have a supply shortage relative to demand, the price will increase because buyers will incrementally increase the price they are willing to pay to ensure that their needs are fulfilled. As prices rise, more supply will be brought on and will eventually exceed demand. This supply excess will cause the price to decline as producers have to lower their prices to sell their goods. What is interesting is that cycles are simply volatility over time. Without the time factor, volatility simply goes up and down. When we add the time element, a cycle is created. This cycle can be big or small. In mining?s case, we are talking about a Super Cycle ? a big cycle. But a Su-per Cycle can be formed in two ways. It can form by either increasing the wavelength or the volatility. If these two elements are combined, a Super Cycle is formed. It is bigger than the normal cycle in terms of time duration and extent of volatility. A recent study (Fig. 1) conducted by Cuddington and Jarrett showed an interesting proof of Super Cycles and suggests that these cycles last between 15 and 30 years. So, what causes a Su-per Cycle? Is it a convergence of unrelated events or a consequence of related events? In a global community everything is related. Equilibrium theory would also take the position that a Super Cycle is a consequence of events.

Since 1973 when the first edition of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook was published, many significant changes have occurred in the US mining industry. The industry went through a fairly prosperous period immediately after 1973, but then many economic pressures came to bear on mining companies, particularly in the metal and coal branches of the industry. These pressures changed both the mining methods used and the general economics of the mining methods. As a result, the industry today is different in many ways titan it was in 1973. A general summary of some of the more important changes that have come about will be provided here as well as some assessment of the effects of these changes on the choices of mining methods. In the metal mining industry, the most significant trends were increased surface mining, the use of larger and more efficient equipment, and increased technology and automation. The primary impetus for these changes was unprecedented competition from foreign producers. In many cases, this competition came about because of the nationalization of foreign mines and the tendency for these mines to become a source of foreign exchange. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted laboratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter?s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing. Laboratory results show that nearly 100 percent of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

Overexposure to respirable dust remains a widespread health hazard to roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines. Recently implemented mist drilling technology was evaluated for its effectiveness in controlling respirable dust exposures for roof bolting personnel. This work presents the findings from NIOSH field and laboratory studies comparing respirable dust levels on mist drilling roof bolter machines to dust levels measured on machines using a conventional vacuum drilling system. Gravimetric and instantaneous respirable dust samples were collected for multiple drilling cycles. These dust measurements were used to assess the potential dust control capabilities relative to conventional drilling. Controlled laboratory tests found 0.3 mg/m3 more respirable dust with mist drilling than with the conventional vacuum method. A separate field investigation of the two techniques observed higher dust levels around the mist bolting machine.

The mining industry is facing new risks from peak commodities, the energy and economic crisis and stock market pressures. The Green Mining Industry Initiative is a risk management strategy for the future of the mining industry. Defining the Risks The bad news is peak commodities, energy and economic crisis and stock markets collapsing are the issues that are already hitting everyone?s bottom line and draining the treasuries of every mining company around the world. Higher energy costs are affecting the bottom line more than ever before, which is creating more risk for companies. Mining companies have major land positions around the world and they have major energy needs. Uncontrollable increases in energy costs, increased regulations for diesel fuel emissions and energy intermittencies are costing mining companies more time, money, and man-power, which are cutting into profits and hitting the balance sheet. The good news is, there are practical energy solutions which are off the grid, tried and true methods which can be implemented in a cost-effective manner and will increase profitability and save shareholder values as well as energy security for these companies and their projects. To date, most of the mining resource industry has not yet considered or used other forms of power like clean, sustainable, or alternative energy for their own energy needs. The reasons have primarily been pushback from the mining industry due to beliefs of older technologies in alternative energy, a lack of understanding of the cost advantages long term, and perceptions of environmental relativity.

Mineral economics interfaces the mineral sciences and engineering with finance and economics in the analysis of appropriate questions facing the minerals and energy industries. Its practitioners include those trained in the earth sciences; mining, petroleum, and geological engineering; metallurgy and mineral preparation; as well as finance, information systems, economics, and statistics-most usefully in one or more combinations. Allowing for some overlap, three general areas may be identified: evaluation, economic analysis, and resource appraisal. Evaluation begins with mine investment analysis (exemplified by Gentry and O'Neil, 1984) and process costing, for which the STRAMM Handbook (Anon., 1977) provides a well-known basis for mining and beneficiation. But it extends from property appraisal, often used for the determination of taxes and royalties, through the determination and comparison of transport costs (e.g., Richer and Soo, 1977), and to benefit/cost analyses of externalities. Economic analysis, the subject of this section, is displayed in rigor and extent both theoretically and as applied to commodity classes in Vogely (1985), but it is implicit though apparent throughout Lefond (1983). The text edited by Vogely places minerals in their aggregative context with economic growth and trade, proceeds to the theoretical analysis of minerals and their markets, analyzes the structure and performance of the major mineral sectors, and concludes with policy issues: fuel, nonfuel, and environmental. Resource appraisal employs quantitative methods for the estimation of mineral and energy resources. It moves through geologic, geophysical, and geochemical properties to the identification of estimation procedures for mineral endowment and for the economic measure of stocks and flows of specific minerals (Harris, 1984). The stability of a raise bore is often assessed using the rock mass classification system published by McCracken and Stacey as a modification of the Q system. Often the assessment is done using a spreadsheet to manipulate geotechnical log(s) of boreholes. This paper discusses the inherent difficulties with this approach. Recent work by others to provide guidelines to the classification system is discussed. A recent example of the design and raise bore performance at Macraes Gold Mine, New Zealand is presented. A key issue is that a visual assessment of the drill core and/or core photographs is necessary to æground-truthÆ the classification.

One of New York City?s largest subway projects is under way 43 m (140 ft) beneath the surface of downtown Manhattan. The East Side Access project, more than 30 years in the making, was halted after a partial excavation in the 1970s due to a lack of funding. The project, once dubbed the ?Tunnel to Nowhere,? has been revitalized into a groundbreaking subway line that includes unique tunnel boring machines (TBM), construction methods and muck removal systems. Project overview The East Side Access project involves construction of a new 6.7-km (4.2-mile) subway line needed to relieve heavy traffic congestion between the boroughs of Queens and Manhattan. The line will serve approximately 160,000 commuters daily between Grand Central and Sunnyside rail stations. Manhattan and Queens will be connected under the East River by the 63rd Street tunnel, a submersed double-decker tube. The submersed tube consists of reinforced concrete sections barged in place on the riverbed. The tube contains operational subway lines on the top deck, while the bottom deck (the ?Tunnel to Nowhere?) will become operational when the East Side Access project is completed in 2013.

Section 15 covers a loose collection of topics that involve water in some way. The chapters in this section include Dredge and Placer Mining (Chapter 15.1), Solution Mining: Surface Techniques (Chapter 15.2), and Solution Mining: In Situ Techniques (Chapter 15.3). The dredge and placer systems involve water in several forms. The segment on hydraulicking or hydrosluicing discusses the use of monitors to direct high-pressure water jets to move material. As such, this represents an alternative to mechanical breakage, loading, and hauling. This chapter also covers placer mining (except dry placering) where the water provides the medium that promotes the separation of minerals based on their density and other settling characteristics. Thus placer mining is generally limited to concentration of gold, tin ore, diamonds, and other heavy minerals that are already liberated and are contained in a less dense matrix. The third topic, straight forward dredging, as in sand and gravel operations, involves water only in an incidental way. Here water simply covers the minerals of interest. Contributions made by mining have played a much more significant role in the development of civilization than is generally conceded by historians or recognized by ordinary citizens. In modern society, mined products pervade all industry and the lives of all civilized people. Early man relied largely on stone and ceramics, and eventually metals, to fashion tools and weapons. Civilization was advanced by discoveries such as abundant supplies of high-quality flint in northern France and southern England and firesetting to break rock. Middle Eastern cultures flourished not only because of agriculture and trade, but also because of mineral-rich deposits nearby. The earliest miners date back perhaps to 300,000 BC; their quest was for nonmetallic minerals (chert, flint, obsidian) suitable for utensils and eventually for weapons. Other rocks and minerals (ceramics, clay, salt, meteoric iron) attracted the miners for jewelry, cosmetics, construction materials, food seasoning, and coinage. At first, their excavations were confined to the surface, either pits or placers. But by about 40,000 BC, mine workings had been extended underground as short adits or shafts, and by 8000 BC as elaborate interconnected openings 300 ft (90 m) in depth.
