For the third successive year it appears that demand for platinum will exceed supplies of newly-mined metal, forecasts Johnson Matthey in its "Platinum 1987 Interim Review." Based on data available at the end of August 1987, Johnson Matthey estimates that western world demand for platinum could exceed 93t (3 million oz) for the first time ever in 1987. Given a likely increase in demand of 4.3t to around 94t (140,000 oz to around 3.02 million oz), up by about 5% over 1986, there would be a 1.8- to 2.2-t (60,000- to 70,000-oz) shortfall in 1987 supply. South African mines enjoying undisrupted production last year after strikes affected Impala's output in 1986. The rate of increases in western world supplies, though, has probably not kept pace with the growth in demand. A downturn in US demand for platinum was counterbalanced by substantially increased purchases from Japanese and Western European consumers of the metal. Total imports of platinum into Japan in 1987 may have reached a record level of 45t (1.45 million oz). The largest source of demand for platinum remains its use in autocatalysts US and Japanese auto manufacturers reduced their platinum purchases in the wake of falling car production. Therefore, a small decline in overall 1987 sales of perhaps 780 kt (25,000 oz) was expected in 1987. Western European demand, however, rose strongly as a result of increased output. The spread of exhaust emission control regulations has sharply boosted the number of cars equipped with three-way catalysts containing platinum and rhodium. Western European auto makers probably needed 5.6t (180,000 oz) of platinum last year, a 50% increase over 1986. The jewelry industry, the second largest user of platinum, increased its offtake of platinum in 1987. Japan, the key to the jewelry industry's consumption of platinum, could absorb 24.8 to 26.4 (800,000 to 850,000 oz) in 1987, compared with 23t (740,000 oz) in 1986. Platinum has wide and diverse applications in industry. Other major users are the chemical, glass, electronics and petroleum industries. They were expected to increase their aggregate demand by about 1.8t (60,000 oz), or 11% in 1987. Investment demand for small platinum bars and coins of up to 311g (10 oz) dropped back in relatively inhospitable conditions. This, after rapid increases in recent years and a surge in US demand in 1986. However, Japanese investors purchasing bars weighing 500g or 1 kg (16 to 32 oz), and considered more speculative, recovered last year. Over the first eight months of 1987, platinum performed strongly on the open market with average prices well up from 1986 in dollar terms. But the increase was less marked where measured in sterling or yen. Platinum ad¬vanced by $3.70/g ($115 per oz) between Jan. 1 and mid-September with the average price having been surpassed only in the heady days of 1980. Johnson Matthey believes that supply and demand appear likely to keep more or less in step on a gently rising path. The recent open market volatility will continue with prices fluctuating widely over short periods. Writing in mid-September, and basing its view on the tangible evidence of platinum's price fall since the review was written, the company's assessment of price prospects is unchanged. Demand for platinum remains strong all-round. In October, imports of platinum into Japan were exceptionally high. And in the US and Japan there was a marked resurgence of demand from private investors. Although market sentiment may have been influenced in part by the news of several potential new platinum mines in South Africa, the full effects of these prospects on supply, even if they were all to materialize, would not be felt before the early-mid 1990s, Johnson Matthey said. According to the review, no radical change in platinum supplies is discernible in the near-term. Incremental growth from South Africa can be expected as the major producers continue to make the most of their existing resources. The Soviet Union may be keener to sell than it appeared earlier in 1987, especially if prices hold up, but a substantial increase is improbable. Canadian supplies are not capable of much variation from present levels. The palladium-rich Stillwater mine will make a modest contribution. Referring to the investment market, Johnson Matthey concluded that despite this year's reduction in sales of small-denomination investment products, platinum does appear to have established itself with private investors. Bearing in mind how business multiplied in comparatively unfavorable conditions before 1986, it is reasonable to look for a resumption of growth once the climate improves.

Discussion by R.J. Pindred In his paper, Davis presents an overview of risk. He also introduces the Capital Asset Processing Model (CAPM) as a foundation for selecting the appropriate discount rate for a mining project. While applying portfolio theory is more defensible than the ad hoc adjustment of discount rates, the CAPM is not a panacea. CAPM shortcomings [The CAPM, as Davis stated, is expressed in the equation: ri=rf+pi4) where ri is the project discount rate rf is the risk free interest rate (3i is the project beta, and 0 is the market risk premium (rm - rf)] Application of the CAPM is more difficult than Davis indicates. Valuation is prospective, while the CAPM parameters are historical. Beta is determined from a regression analysis of historical data, while the beta needed for valuation is the expected beta. Betas are known to be unstable and the regressions that generate them often have low explanatory power. The difficulty of estimating a "project" beta must also be considered. Thus, the beta that is used in the CAPM will be based on the analyst's judgment. Like Cavender's discount rate, this judgment can lead to different project NPVs. Subjectivity in valuation cannot be avoided by a mechanical application of the CAPM. The risk-free rate, which Davis identifies as a short-term real rate of 4%, is also subject to scrutiny. A mining project is not a short-term investment and no single risk-free rate is appropriate for all of the cash flows. The hypothetical mine discussed in Cavender's paper is a six-year project. One might argue for the application of a risk-free rate from the Treasury yield curve at the duration of the project (in a bond-duration sense). This, too, is inappropriate. The risk-free rate should be matched to the timing of the cash flow. These rates can be determined by calculating the implied forward rates from the yield curve using a procedure known as "bootstrapping." It is likely that each of the project's cash flows would be discounted at a different rate. Commodity prices Davis criticizes the "ad hoc adjustment to the discount rate." Yet, in his discussion of the value of stochastic simulation, he suggests that the gold price be modeled as a "random walk, with or without a trend." This is essentially an arbitrary modeling of price risk. Consider that a liquid market in gold futures exists. The futures' price curve, which is closely related to the market's estimate of future spot gold prices, should be used to provide inputs to the model. This is especially true of a relatively short six-year project. Alternatively, as Davis correctly points out, a risk-averse investor can sell the commodity short to hedge price risk. Is it any more correct, in the portfolio sense, to account for price risk at all ?? Davis Pindred discusses two issues related to my paper, the shortcomings of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and which commodity price values to use in the valuation exercise. Even though these topics are not directly related to the use or misuse of Monte Carlo simulation, they are important points to take into consideration in valuation exercises. Since I do not appear to have addressed these issues satisfactorily in my original paper, I will comment on each here. Pindred agrees with me that applying portfolio theory, and specifically the CAPM, to the selection of project discount rates is more defensible than ad hoc methods. But he then points out that the application of the CAPM to project valuation is more difficult that I indicate. It is true that the CAPM is a difficult tool for project valuation in general,. But the application of the CAPM to mining projects is one of the easiest I can think of. The biggest problem with using the CAPM for project valuation is coming up with an expected project beta. I suggest a project beta for gold projects of 0.45. The "true" value might be 0.35, 0.55 or whatever. Pindred correctly notes that the selection of the appropriate project beta is based

INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, )"Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with a minimum of instruments for the purpose of merely guiding the operators. Processes were manually controlled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction savings in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material through- put, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins or producing a new and saleable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure, and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable. In coal processing, the first class of instruments, those which measure only, include analytical devices such as automatic ash, moisture and sulfur measuring units and the simple pressure, temperature, flow and level indicating devices mentioned previously. The second group of instruments, those which both measure and control, include a wide variety of units such as continuous weighing devices on conveyor belts and photoelectric cells which gauge the position of railroad cars on the track and insure that the cars are in the proper location for loading (see Chapter 15). The latter types of units as used in the coal industry differ from those used in other industries in one significant point. In coal processing these instruments need not be as highly sophisticated and accurate as in other industries; hence their cost is proportionately lower than in other industries. The introduction of ovens for the production of metallurgical coke is believed to be due to L. L. Norton who operated an iron foundry in the vicinity of Connellsville, Pa. Persuaded by his foreman, an English immigrant named Nickols from Durham, L. L. Norton put up a 12-ft square oven which produced coke in 1833. The coal used was taken from a local mine at Mounts Creek. The oven seems to have been used in conjunction with the customary method of coking in mounds. It was in the Connellsville district also, in 1841, that two carpenters, Provence McCormick and James Campbell, formed a partnership with John Taylor, a stone mason, for the manufacture and sale of oven coke. The task of the mason was to construct the ovens, while the carpenters were to build the arks by which the coke could be taken by water to the market at Cincinnati. The following account of the enterprise was given by McCormick: "James Campbell and myself heard in some way that I do not now recollect that the manufacturing of coke might be made a good business. Mr. John Taylor, a stone mason, who owned the farm on which the Fayette coke works now stand, and who was mining coal in a small way, was spoken to regarding our enterprise, and proposed a partnership-he to build the ovens and make the coke and Mr. Campbell and myself to build a boat and take the coke to Cincinnati, where we heard there was a good demand. This was in 1841. Mr. Taylor built two ovens. I think they were about 10 feet in diameter. My recollection is that the charge was 80 bushels. The ovens were built in the same style as those now used, but had no iron ring at the top to prevent the brick from falling in when filling the oven with coal, nor had we any iron frames at the mouth where the coke was drawn. The top and mouth had to be repaired when they fell in. In the spring of 1842 enough coke had been made to fill two boats 90 feet long-about 800 bushels each-and we took them to Cincinnati down the Youghiogheny, Monongahela, and Ohio, but when we got there we could not sell. Mr. Campbell, who went with the boats, lay at the landing some two or three weeks, retailing out one boatload and part of the other in small lots at about 8 cents a bushel. Miles Greenwood, a foundryman of that city, offered to take the balance if he would take a small patent flour mill at $125.00 hi pay, which Mr. Campbell did. He had it shipped here. We tried it, but it was no good, and we sold it to a man in the mountains for $30.00, and thus ended our coke business." So successful did the coke subsequently prove to be in use that the three partners were asked to deliver more. Evidently they had had enough of the coke business, however, for they refused to have anything more to do with it. Few ovens were built between 1841 and 1855, and it is reported that in the latter year, "there were only 26 coke ovens along the river above Pittsburgh". Successful coke makers of these years included Mordecai Cochran, Richard Brookius, and Colonel A. M. Hill. It was the use of coke in 1859 in the Clinton furnace erected by Graff, Bennett and Co. in a plant on West Carson Street, Pittsburgh, that brought the real beginning of the coke-iron era in America. Here the successful use of Connellsville coke as a blast-furnace fuel was demonstrated beyond all possible doubt, and from the year 1859 the coking industry expanded tremendously. The era of beehive coke ovens During the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth, the major percentage of metallurgical coke produced in the United States came from beehive ovens. Background Iron ore is the No. 1 metal mining industry in the U.S. with dollar value of $2.3 billion in 1984 (U.S.B.M Mineral Commodity Sunnnaries , 1985). However, during the past decade this nation's iron ore industry has been subjected to a major market depression and a correspondingly downward adjustment in output. The recent trend in the curtailment of iron ore production traces a slow-down of the country's steel industry. Both pig iron and steel production have decreased significantly over the past several years. These trends are shown in Figure 1 from data collected by the federal Bureau of Mines (U.S.B.M. Mineral Commodity Summaries, 1985; U.S.B.M. Mineral Industry Surveys 1986). The industry is presently operating at less than 60% of its annual capacity. The domestic steel industry has been forced by reduced profits or losses to close facilities, curtail operations and restructure the financial status of several corporations. Companies have been sold or are trying to sell selected properties to improve their financial circumstances. Even with such actions, many of the steel companies are in very serious straits, including the seventh largest steel company, LTV, which has filed for bankruptcy. Many of the major steel companies have financial interests in iron ore mining and thus their adverse economic conditions directly reflect those operations. Several iron ore producers have been shut down including Reserve Mining Company in May, 1986 and Butler Taconite in June, 1985. The latter recently filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. A1 so in mid-1986, U.S. Steel Corporation, owner of the Minntac mine and iron ore processing plant, underwent corporate restructuring. The effect on their Minnesota plant is not known at this time. An excellent summary of the interrelationship of the iron ore companies and the steel producers has been provided by Skillings (1986), and an analysis of the iron ore situation was given by Robert F. Anderson, CEO of M. A. Hanna Company, in his keynote address at the 1986 University of Minnesota Mining Symposium (Anderson, 1986). Steel imports to the United States decreased slightly in 1985 because of import restrictions, but the long-term import situation remains dim and uncertain. As shown in Figure 2, the imports averaged about 25% in 1985, and the preliminary indications are that this figure could be as high as 30% when the final 1986 information is collected by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. At best, the industry can only hope for imports to stabilize at a constant level in the near future. Although the tonnage is small, the quantity of U.S. export steel has fallen over 50%. With many other materials replacing steel , the projected demand through 1990 is expected to increase only about 1% per year. Consequently, 1986 U.S. iron ore production will probably be 15% lower than in 1985. The 41 mil lion tons of iron ore production expected in 1986 represents only 53% of the industrial capacity, which is about 74.5 mil lion tons. Over 95% of this iron ore is in the form of beneficiated pellets. Today there is not an iron ore producer west of the Mississippi River, nor is there any production in the South. The Birmingham (Alabama) iron ore industry has been shut down since 1971. The western producers ceased operations in the early 1980's. Only the taconite operations in Minnesota and the plants in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan remain as our major domestic iron ore source. The economic situation for both the iron ore producers and the steel industry can be described as confused and in turmoil. Such a condition directly impacts the iron ore processing plants' operations and plans for the future. Plant Practice At present the nation's eight major operating iron ore mines, listed below, are concentrated in northern Minnesota (Mesabi Range) and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Marquette Range). The only exception to the Minnesota/Michigan location is the Pea Ridge Iron Ore plant in Missouri, which is a subsidiary of St. Joe Mineral s.

A techno-economic study is in progress, examining process and product options for treating smelter gases containing various concentrations of sulphur dioxide. Key contenders have been examined within an Australian context using the following criteria: * Markets for products * Capital Costs * Operating Costs * Waste streams generated Product options considered thus far are sulphuric acid, sulphur, calcium sulphite and gypsum. The development of an appropriate overall framework for evaluating process and product options is discussed and findings thus far presented. The emerging techno-economic study offers promise as a constructive guide to future policy decisions by industry and government.

Visit to the Datsun Nissan Company's body pressing and assembly plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, and the Claremont-Danville Tunnel on 27th February, 1970. The excursion arranged for the 27th February to the Datsun Nissan motor car assembly plant at Rosslyn, near Pretoria, in the morning and the Claremont-Danville tunnel in the afternoon was well supported by some 43 members. The visitors were met at the factory by Mr Rademeyer, the Industrial Relations Manager, and members of his staff and were taken to the artisan training centre for light refreshments. There is a well-equipped training section with an air-conditioned lecture hall; we were told that such training facilities were important because of the cosmopolitan nature of the artisan staff. The visitors were divided into small parties and taken to the tool die and jig-making section, which is perhaps the key department for a factory of this nature. There the many dies for the presses in the body pressing section, as well as the complicated jigs for body welding are made. The technique for making the castings for the dies is interesting. A polystyrene model of the casting is embedded in moulding sand. In a neighbouring foundry molten metal is pressed into the headers and burns away the polystyrene, which leaves no residue, and this exactly fills the space occupied by the model. This rough casting is then machined in large copying machines (costing as much as Rl80 000). An exact plastic model of the surface of the pressing required, set up in juxtaposition to this casting is traversed by a master stylus which operates the slave milling cutter, thereby machining the surface to close tolerances. The machined casting is cleaned up by hand and finally finished in large spotting machines, using a blue dye to show up high spots, to the fine degree of accuracy required. The body pressing section was next visited. There the large number of pressed parts which make up a vehicle body are pressed out of special deep drawing steel plate. Some of the largest presses were capable of applying a pressure of 1 200 tons and cost as much as Rl85 000 each. The visitors then followed through to the assembly section where jigs are used to hold together the many pressings, which are then spot welded into body frames. The frames go to an assembly line where they are finished to the stage for painting. The continuous crawl painting assembly line carries the frames through all the stages of prime coating with zinc phosphate sprayed on in a tunnel, followed by immersion of the lower parts in a priming bath, then drying and spray painting and baking in tunnels. The body frames, after painting, join another assembly line, where the doors, upholstery and many fittings are attached. After this stage the completed bodies are lowered onto and attached to the chassis units which are largely assembled from imported parts (engines, transmission units, etc.). From the end of the line the completed cars are driven off to the trial track and then pass through a tunnel with powerful water sprays to detect leaks in the body work. The proportion of locally made parts is just on 45 per cent. An interesting aspect of the assembly organization is that, of the 140 or 160 cars completed each day there may be included some of each of the Datsun model as well as some Renault and Alfa Romeo models models which are assembled by this company. The change from one model to another several times a day does not present any difficulty to the organization. Each section of the assembly plant 'buys' the units from the preceeding section and 'sells' to the succeeding section. This means that the responsibility of each section ends when the unit is sold to the next section. The cost of repairing any faults found subsequently is charged to the section where it is found, which puts a powerful emphasis on meticulous inspections between sections to safeguard their costs. After the tour the parties assembled at the lecture hall where a lavish cold buffet luncheon was provided by the company. After luncheon Mr A. R. C. Fowler, on behalf of the Institute, thanked the Managing Director, Mr W. J. Wilson and his staff for this most interesting and well organized visit. The party then left for the Claremont-Danville tunnel. The tunnel is being driven by General Mining Federale Kontrakteurs through the Daspoort Range, Pretoria, to link the suburbs of Danville, near Iscor, and Claremont, which at present can only be reached by a nine mile detour. It is estimated that some 6000 vehicles per day will use the tunnel. Before entering the tunnel a short talk was given by Mr Ross who is in charge of operations. He called on various officials and staff of the Consulting Engineering firm, Basil Read (Pty.) Ltd., to describe the tunnel and

With the price of precious metals at an 18-year low, every ounce of metal produced is important. The theft of metals from mining and refining sites can mean the diffrence between profit and loss for many mining companies. Low metal prices do not reduce the potential for the theft of precious metals. History has shown that the price of gold has little to do with the desire for employees to steal precious or base metals. There is actually evidence that the theft of precious metals increases when the price of this commodity goes down. Several of the major precious metal thefts in the past year took place at silver mines when the price of silver was less than 16 cents/g ($5/oz). How does the lowest gold price in 18 years affect the need for security at precious metals properties? There is no short answer to this question. One reason is because the exposure to theft of precious metals is unique to each property. This makes it important that each property be evaluated individually. More than 95% of all precious metals thefts can be attributed to those working at the mine site. So preventing employee theft is the primary concern. One consideration is the location of the property. Gold selling at any price is still an attractive commodity in countries where the employees are making between US$400 and US$600 a month. It is not uncommon for employees at mines in countries where low wages are the norm to consider the value of a gram or two of gold to be a significant amount of money. A gram or two of gold a day may not seem like much. But if 15 employees steal two grams a day, that equates to a significant amount of money during a year. The type of property where the precious metals product is being recovered is also important. For example, a property with a gravity circuit is more likely to suffer from the theft of gold product than a property where all gold is finely disseminated and the only gold seen in the ore body is through a microscope. Gravity circuits increase an operation's exposure to theft because the grinding circuit that is associated with a gravity circuit often becomes a giant concentrator. Areas such as the bottom of grinding-mill pump boxes, cyclone-feed-pump clean out traps and the sumps often become locations where precious metals concentrate (Figs. 1 and 2). Muck concentrations in these locations can be as high as 25% to 40% of gold or silver. Not long ago, muck was removed from a barren-solution sump at a Merrill Crowe circuit that had concentrated to more than 40% gold. At a milling site in the Pacific Rim, residents of the community adjacent to the mine learned about the value of the concentrates in the sump under the ball mill and committed an armed rob¬bery. While several of their co-conspirators held the em¬ployees at bay with machetes, the others emptied the contents of the sump into buckets and removed it from the site. Armed robbery is not as common as employee theft. However, while this article was being written, an armed robbery occurred at a gold property in Central America. Armed perpetrators took as hostages the night shift employees at a process plant and used cutting torches that were on site to cut into the high-security and gold-storage areas. The perpetrators then stole a company vehicle to remove the stolen gold buttons and sludge from the site. Unfortunately, this type of activity goes on regularly. But managements of most mining companies are reluctant to discuss theft scenarios. So information pertaining to the theft of precious metals seldom becomes a newsworthy item. An audit conducted at a mine site with a gravity circuit recommended that the gravity recovery area be shut down until adequate protection could be provided. Although it was not connected with the audit, it was necessary to shut down the gravity area for a pro¬longed period because of problems with the gravity table. In the two months that followed, gold production at the site increased by about 31 kg/month (1,000 oz/month). It is difficult to attribute all of this increase to the theft of concentrates. But there was a good chance that at least part of the increase was due to the fact that concentrates were being stolen from the gravity area.

The Kriel Colliery is an Anglo Coal mine which is contracted with Eskom to produce No. 4 seam for Kriel power station. The mine previously found it uneconomical to mine No. 5 seam due to the low qualities and tonnages of the seam, both at the opencast and underground sections. An area has been encountered for the first time at Kriel Colliery opencast pit 5, where the tonnage and qualities of No. 5 seam warrant further investigation. The primary reason for the investi¬gation of No. 5 seam by Kriel Colliery is because of the advantage of the high selling price (R450/t) that the market is currently prepared to pay for the No. 5 seam. The aim of this project is to mine No. 5 seam economically without interrupting No. 4 seam mining operations. The problem is that the equipments that are currently being used at the mine belong to Eskom and are dedicated to mining No. 4 seam only, not No. 5 seam. Through geology investigation, it is found that the whole No. 5 seam (No. 5 seam upper and lower) has an average thickness of 1.8 m. It also contains a parting of carbonaceous shale which divides the seam into two parts. No. 5 seam upper contains less tonnage compared to No. 5 seam lower. The calorific value and ash content of No. 5 seam lower is far better than No. 5 seam upper, but would still require washing the coal. This makes No. 5 seam lower the preferred seam to mine because it meets the requirements of the customer which is Highveld Steel. It is a coincidence that the area containing No. 5 seam under investigation encounters high overburden problems. The problem of drilling to No. 4 seam was going to be encountered because the thickness of the overburden ranges from 35 to 39 m. The Gardner Denver at the mine can drill blastholes only to a depth of 34.5 m, meaning the full overburden will not be drilled at once. This means the mining of No. 5 seam will do favours for Eskom because the overburden thickness will be minimized. This then led to an agreement between Anglo Coal and Eskom to mine No. 5 seam because both companies benefit from the project. In order to identify a suitable mining method for No. 5 seam lower, literature studies took place. It is found that San Juan mine from the USA has similar geological features to Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam. Through comparisons, it is found that truck and shovel mining would suit the geology of Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam since San Juan mine is using it. The sequence of mining No. 5 seam lower allows for a clearance of two cuts between the truck and shovel operation and the dragline. The mining sequence of No. 5 and 4 seam will be in the order of top soil removal; soft overburden pre-stripping; pre-strip drilling; pre-strip hard overburden; No. 5 seam lower coaling; interburden drilling and blasting; interburden stripping and No. 4 seam coaling. Financial evaluation of the project shows that a contractor will charge Kriel Colliery (Anglo Coal) approximately R 102.2 million to mine No. 5 seam successfully. The sales of No. 5 seam lower will provide a profit of R99.4 million at a yield of 70% from the washing plant. The project is beneficial to both Eskom and Anglo Coal because Eskom will have eliminated the problem of pre-stripping and Anglo Coal will generate additional profit. Through investigation and analyses of the project, it is proven to be viable and should take place. This is after looking at the advantages that the project has for Anglo Coal and Eskom. The Mather Mine property is composed of a 5.2 sq km (2 sq mile) area within the Cities of Ishpeming and Negaunee which are located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Production in this mine started in 1943; it ran continuously until its closing in 1979, having produced slightly over 55 million tons of iron ore. This mine was a joint venture between several steel companies and The Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company (CCI), with CCI being the fee holder and operator. For the first 17 years of operation, the ore was shipped in its natural state directly from the mine to the steel mill. By 1960, iron ore pellets were on the market and they proved so superior to the natural soft Mather ore that the latter became difficult to sell except for the coarser portions. It was decided to develop a pelletizing process for the Mather ore, and this was accomplished by 1965 when the first Mather pellets were produced. From this date, all but the coarse fraction of the Mather ore was shipped as pellets. The geological setting is that of a large east-west trending synclinorium which plunges to the west. The lowest member of this trough-like structure is, for the most part, a quartzite-like graywacke, the upper 20 m of which grades into a softer, fine grained slate. Lying conformably on this graywacke footwall member is an iron- formation member which is over 1,300 m in thickness. This iron-formation is cow posed of thin alternate bands of iron oxides and chert and is intruded by a number of diorite sills - some up to 122 rn (400 ft) in thickness. The north limb of this synclinorium dips at approximately 45' and bottoms out at about 1,000 m from surface in the central part of the mine. There are two sets of faults, many of which are intruded by diorite dikes, which trend east-west and southeast-northwest. Displacements are varied, reaching a maximum displacement of 243 m (800 ft). The ore is found lying directly on the slatey footwall and its position is largely controlled by the faults and dikes, with the bulk of the ore being on the upper side of these structures. The ore is composed of soft earthy hematite and martite with vertical thicknesses up to 122 m (400 ft) although the average thickness would be closer to 46 m (150 ft). The ore averaged 60% iron and 7% silica on a dried analysis. The Mather Mine is located on the north limb of the syncline and was worked from two shafts, the deepest of which. was 1,09 7 m. These two shafts are about 2 km apart and serviced a total of 8 working levels between them during the life of the mine. The level spacing was about 61 m (200 ft). The main haulageways were driven parallel to the ore/footwall contact in the hard cow petent graywacke wherever possible. On the lower levels, deeper into the footwall, naked development was common. This material graded into roof bolting ground towards the upper stratigraphic portion. As drifting progressed further into the upper stratigraphic portion of the footwall, progressively stronger steel sets had to be used. From the main haulageway, cross-cuts were turned into the orebody on 61 m (200 ft) centers and extended as far as needed to recover the ore available to that particular cross-cut. The main haulageways and cross-cuts were driven 3 m (10 ft) high, 3 m (10 ft) wide at the top and 4.6 m (15 ft) wide at the bottom. This configuration would accomodate a set composed of a 2.7 m (9 ft) cap on top of two 2.7 m (9 ft) legs angled out at 18'. A sill plate was used under each leg to prevent its sinking into the ore below. The type of steel used was dependent on the expected weight to be experienced. Sets were placed on 1.63 m (5 ft 4 in.) centers; however, in extremely heavy areas, it was sometimes necessary to install sets on 0.8 m (2 ft 8 in.) centers. On the top two levels (5th and 6th), the ore was considerably hard-er and was mined by sub-level stoping and long hole drilling. Very light steel sets were used in the main haulageways and cross-cuts and timber was used in the production drifts. Some con- crete production drifts were installed on 6th level, but proved to be uneconomical. However, as mining reached greater depths, the ore became softer and more massive, reaching its maximum vertical heights on 11th and 12th levels. On levels 7 through 10, yielding steel sets were used extensively in the slusher drifts. While they were satisfactory on 7th and 8th levels, their success diminished with depth and they were

"The last thirty years have seen enormous changes in all aspects of the gold industry, from the technologies of mining and extracting gold to the role it has played in the fiscal policies of nations. In this time, the market price of gold has increased ten fold and mine production has more than doubled. However, the cost of mining and extracting gold has also increased exponentially, and the industry has struggled with declining ore grades and increasingly refractory ore bodies.With the major economic powers of the world shrugging off the uncertainties of the post cold war era and moving into a period of unprecedented political stability, economic growth and low inflation, gold is also losing its lustre as a hedge against inflation and a backing for national currencies. Consequently, countries that had accumulated and hoarded gold for decades are now disposing of these non-performing assets, resulting in major swings in supply of the metal. Fortunately, this has coincided with the end of communism in many parts of the world and a tentative move to free market economies in most of the developing nations. As a result, people are becoming wealthier, and this is creating more demand for gold, principally in the form of jewelry.On balance, the shift in the role of gold, from one in which a significant portion of new gold production lay dormant in bank vaults as insurance against political or fiscal instability, to one in which most new gold is now freely traded as an industrial commodity, responding to normal market forces of supply and demand, has had a negative impact on the price of gold over the last fifteen years. In that time, the gold price has declined from a peak of $850/oz in 1980 to an average price of about $400 through the rest of the l 980's, to a price of -$320/oz today (1997). In large measure, this has been due to the enormous inventory of gold metal that was held by central government banks in vaults around the world, and which has been dumped on the market as soon as the price has started to trend upwards. Even today, after ten years of fairly steady selling by central banks, about 3 0, 000 tons of gold (or -8 years' supply at the present rate of consumption) is still retained in vaults (Murray et al., 1997).The downward pressure on the price of gold has created exciting opportunities for the development and implementation of new technology. Increasing the efficiency of gold recovery from more and more refractory ore bodies, whilst at the same time lowering production costs, have become critical to survival in this industry. These challenges have been met by the development and implementation of new technologies such as heap leaching, carbon in pulp, resin in pulp and the sulphide ore pre-treatment process of pressure leaching, bacterial leaching and fluid bed roasting. For an industry that saw very little technological change in the first seventy years of the twentieth century, the pace of change over the last thirty years must have seemed bewildering at times."

Statistical summary of the mineral industry world production, exports and imports 1964-1969 Published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office, London, on behalf of the Institute of Geological Sciences (1971) The Statistical Summary contains a wealth of care fully garnered information on the production, exports and imports of the principal minerals and mineral products throughout the world for the period 1964-1969, and it should therefore be of particular interest to economic geologists and others concerned with marketing and selling minerals. In view of the intractable nature of the source data it is quite an achievement to have published figures for 1969 so expeditiously. On picking up the Summary this reviewer instinctively compared it with the Annual Yearbook published by the United States Department of the Interior. The Yearbooks have been issued annually since 1882, and today each consists of a set of three separate books containing five volumes. Apart from abundant statistics on the domestic and international mineral industries, the Yearbooks are known for their perspicacious reviews and articles on a host of different facets of the world's minerals industry. Physically the Summary is a much slimmer publication than the Yearbook, and it contains no commentary whatsoever other than occasional footnotes. The principal contents are a series of tables showing production, exports and imports of fifty-nine of the world's more important minerals and mineral products. Each table shows the weight of the material produced or traded, by countries, with figures for each of the six years in adjoining columns. In some cases (e.g. diamonds) values in British currency are quoted in addition to weights. Most of the data have been abstracted from national reports and returns, although in some instances estimates are quoted where national sources are silent--as for example the production of platinum in South Africa. One wonders in passing if any useful purpose is served by the continued suppression of this particular figure. The four South African producers must surely be able to estimate each other's production fairly accurately by now, and one imagines that the national export figures can likewise be synthesised. This reviewer has two minor criticisms of an otherwise praiseworthy publication. Firstly it seems an unnecessary anachronism to perpetuate the split between 'Commonwealth' and 'Other' countries-the split can have little practical significance today. Secondly, what is one to make of the statement that the 1966-1969 figures for exports from Rhodesia of chrome ore and copper, to take two examples only, are 'not available'? It seems improbable that no estimates of these figures have been made since the imposition of sanctions, and inevitably one suspects that the figures have been excluded on policy grounds. Hopefully this problem will have been solved when the next Summary is published. M.J.M. South Africa, land of Challenge by Maurice Tyack France Interpresse, 323 pages, price R18-00. Is South Africa God's richest acre? In its mineral wealth it certainly is, but what of the many other complex overlays of emotions, traditions and racial problems? South Africa, Land of Challenge, provides the background. This is reported to be the first comprehensive documentary work of its kind on South Africa. It is a handsome volume measuring 12ft by 9f', is illustrated by at least 600 photographs of South Africa, more than half of which are in colour, and contains 21 original maps and charts. The book covers the full spectrum of South Africa's very existence, its geography, pre-history, its customs, countryside, natural resources and its cities. The more controversial categories are thoroughly discussed, the people, their policies and politics. Mr Tyack is eminently qualified to write on South Africa, being the author of over 20 books on other African countries and having spent more than three years of research, in the field, in South African archives and also in various libraries and museums, in preparation for this book. The book claims to be free of any party political bias and appears to be an honest attempt at a factual survey. However, a work of this magnitude will undoubtedly leave an impression on the reader and the tone of this book is decidedly patriotic. This is a useful reference work on South Africa that most South Africans will be proud to own. J.P.H. Ergonomics and physical environmental factors This publication by I.L.O. of a symposium in Rome in September 1968 has much useful information for the mining industry in regard to the health and productivity of its labour force. The first subject dealt with is mechanical vibrations. From this section it is clear that men who drive, for many hours each day, vehicles which vibrate in the 6 Hz range are subject to serious physiological and psychological effects. The former may show as changes to the vertebral column (which has a resonance in the 4-5 Hz range). The circulatory system is adversely effected by values in the 6-10 Hz range and the vision is impaired at between 40-100 Hz. Less definite knowledge exists of the effects of vibration on the hand-arm system from mechanical drills etc, although Raynauds disease of the blood vessels of the hand and degenerative diseases of the elbow and shoulder joints occur in men using drills which vibrate, respectively, in the higher and low frequency ranges. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R2,124, compared with an excess of income over expenditure of R4,218 last year. There are a number of reasons for this substantial change. There was a loss on realization of investments compared with a substantial surplus in recent years. The publication of the Journal once again resulted in a large loss in spite of a generous subvention of R2,000 from the Department of Cultural Affairs and other assistance amounting to R750. The revenue from sales of publications was down considerably. This is a figure which fluctuates considerably from year to year. The secretarial fee was considerably higher than previously. Due to pressure of work it was necessary for the Secretary to relinquish his duties with the Institute of Land Surveyors and, therefore, for this Institute to assume the additional staff costs involved. Finally there was unusual expenditure on the 75th Anniversary celebrations. There was a pleasing increase in revenue from subscriptions, due to the steadily increasing membership, but this was quite inadequate to cover the substantial increases in expenditure and losses in revenue mentioned above. The changes that have been effected in the arrangements for the publication of the Journal have been mentioned elsewhere in this report. It is expected that these will bring about substantial financial benefits in the long term. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of Rl00 and the total fund was therefore increased by this amount to R4,206. The balance sheet indicates that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R8,755 to R13,059, while the Accumulated Funds now amount to R22,567 as against R24,691 last year. MEMBERSHIP Fifty-six Members, fifty-five Associate Members, thirteen Graduates, twenty-two Affiliates and twenty- nine Students were elected during the year. This glossary is publi~hed- by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution' to the mining literature in the belief that it will fill a long-felt need. It contains about 20,000 terms; these include both technical and purely local terms related to metal mining, coal mining, quarrying, petroleum, and natural gas, and metallurgical works; names of useful, important, and common minerals and rocks; an<lgeological terms. It presents in one comprehensive volume the available standard, technical terms relating to the mining and mineral industry, as well as provincialisms that have been or are now in use in English-speaking countries. The glossary also includes many terms relating to ceramics and the clay industry, glass making, foundry practice, railway and building construction, electrical installation and power-plant equipment, and chemical terms relating to metallurgical practice. Complete lists of terms for' each of these allied industries are beyond the scope of this glossary. Paleontological terms, although closely associated with geology, are far removed from mining and metallurgical operations, and for this reason have been omitted. In a compilation of this magnitude, it is difficult, within a reasonable time to verify all definitions as to the latest usage. Much verifying was done and it is hoped that the best and latest definitions have been used. Reference to the publications cited will enable the reader to determine approximately the period when the definition was used. Definitions in use by engineers of high national or international reputation are given first preference. When definitions from different sources are the same, credit is given to the earlier author as being the original or nearest to the original source. Immediately following each term the name of the locality wherein the word is presumed to have originated or is widely used is given, where such information is available. The name of the author or source from which the definition was obtained follows the definition, and serves as a key to the publications listed. The primary responsibility for appraising the status of the country&apos;s mineral supply and for making appropriate recommendations within the executive branch and to the Congress has been pinned in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In fulfilling its role of governmental responsibility for raw-material supplies and their efficient utilization, the Bureau of Mines has analyzed the factors in current and future mineral supplies and demands and has developed 87 statements for specific commodities that assess the national position and problems for these metals, minerals, and mineral fuels. These statements, which constitute the chapters of this volume, are based on lire assumption that nearly till production and consumption of materials in the United States are to be by private individuals and organizations, in accordance with the Nation&apos;s devotion to a private-enterprise economy.

Spurred by a variety of factors, coal flotation is making headway among the preparation plants of West Germany. The author gives some statistics on German coal flotation plants and information on the properties of the feed and quality of the derived products. Types of machines and reagents used, dewatering practices, tailings disposal, and thickening operations are covered. There is special emphasis on the many-sided problems that confront German coal preparation engineers. The coal mining industry of West Germany is concentrated in three coalfields: the first on the Ruhr and the Rhein rivers, the second on the Saar river, and the third near the frontier between Germany and the Netherlands, around the towns of Aachen and Erkelenz. The total run-of-mine production of these three coalfields amounts to 736,000 tpd which come from 145 collieries. There are 121 washeries, 43 of them with a flotation plant. The total throughput of these 43 washeries is 280,000 tpd, out of which 26,000 tons (9.3 pet of the washery feed coal) are cleaned by flotation. The capacity of the individual flotation plants varies within relatively wide limits, the average being 40 tph and the capacity of the largest flotation plant being 120 tph. During the last few years, the number and size of flotation plants have been steadily increasing, although flotation must be looked upon as an expensive and rather complex cleaning process. The considerations which have led to the widespread application of flotation may be summarized as follows: 1) In making coking coal, it is seldom possible to add uncleaned fines to the coke oven charge, as their ash content is too high. If, however, the ash content of the fines is reduced to a maximum of 7 or 8 pet, they can be admixed to the washed and crushed small sizes without difficulty. This means, naturally that revenue is increased since the price of coking fines is always higher than the price for dust or uncleaned wet fines. 2) To prevent silicosis and pneumoconiosis, water infusion and spraying of the coal are practiced much more today than ever before. As a result, moisture content of run-of-mine coal has markedly increased and the washery feed coal contains more and more slurry instead of dry dust. The price of slurry, how- ever, is very low, and in many cases it is impossible to sell filtered raw slurry with a moisture content of 20 to 25 pct and, at the same time, 20 to 25 pct of ash. Reduction of the ash content of these slurries improves the possibility of dewatering them and, in this way, also enhances the marketability of this product. 3) The new severe laws and regulations against pollution of air and rivers make it necessary to de-dust coal better than in the past and to reduce the quantity of the waste water from coal preparation plants and their solids content to a minimum. 4) Even if there were no compulsory reasons to clean the fines, flotation will often lead to an increase in the overall yield. Although not the only application, it appears that the treatment of coking fines is the primary field for the flotation process in coal preparation. It must not be overlooked, however, that a series of arguments may be advanced against flotation: 1) Flotation is an expensive process because, in addition to the cleaning operation itself, the dewatering of the froth and the disposal of the tailings is very costly. 2) Operation of a flotation plant requires well trained personnel. 3) Filtered froth has about a 20 pct moisture content and, therefore, if mixed with the cleaned small coal it causes an undesirable increase in water content of the coke oven charge. For this reason it is necessary to take additional measures for dewatering washed small coal and this, of course, entails additional expense. 4) Disposal of flotation tailings involves very difficult problems, particularly in the highly industrialized regions. An investigation covering 32 flotation plants of Western Germany shows the following composition and properties of their feed:

TODAY&apos;S mining industry is witnessing a transition in labor utilization. The drill-jumbo operator, the mucking-machine operator, the blasting crew, the scaling and timbering crew are all specialists. The all-around miner is rapidly disappearing. As mechanization has resulted in a higher order of underground skills; specialization of labor has been a natural consequence, as has the need for more supervision and engineering. Mines now are cleaner, neater, safer, and have a greater productivity per man-shift than ever before. Nothing spectacular like the continuous miner has yet come to the underground metal mines, but t a gradual improvement in methods, equipment, and technical knowledge is achieving the increased efficiency. With the exhaustion of the rich ores and large profits and who-cares-about-the-costs, mining has become a business; that of producing low value ores at costs below selling price. Charles A. Chase, patriarch of Colorado mountain mining men, manager of the Shenandoah-Dives, was one of the first to preach and prove his preachings that mining is a business. He has been mining a lead-copper-zinc-gold-silver ore, much from elevations above 1.3,000 ft, for a quarter century without a shutdown.-The ore is of such low value that most engineers and investors still would consider it foolhardy. Yet he has kept Silverton, Colo., alive, has paid wages without a lapse, has produced $25 million of new wealth and maintained a steady return to the investors. This type of responsibility is increasingly apparent in the mining business and is one feather that can be worn proudly. .Much emphasis is being placed on improving, the productive mining operations-breaking, loading and transportation. Breaking in underground metal mining is done by drilling and blasting. To the writer&apos;s knowledge, no chain or rotary-type machine has been developed for mining strong, abrasive rock. Drilling Percussion drills are still the standard drilling machines underground. Diamond drills, that: were the rage a decade ago for drilling long holes, are being superseded by the rock drill. The development of the hard abrasion-resistant carbide bit permits full-gage long holes to be drilled by percussion drills at a lower cost than diamonds. The change in the use of percussion drills is chiefly in the method of mounting. The column and arm are disappearing and the jackleg and rubber-tired or track-layer jumbo mountings are taking its place. At the Homestake mine .lightweight jackhammers mounted• on pneumatic legs using 7/8-in. hexagonal drill. rods and 1 1/2-in, tungsten-carbide detachable bits have been found more portable and maneuverable. They have less air consumption, lowered, dynamite consumption, and more footage and tonnage per man-shift than with 3 1/2-in. drifters on a column mounting. Drills now are mounted on longer feed carriages, drilling up to 20 ft without changing steel. These mountings result in great savings because the driller can set up quickly, drill the entire depth of the hole without changing the drill rod or bit using carbide and one-use bits, and can move his machine quickly to the next hole. One man to the machine is becoming general practice. The result is longer rounds rounds drilled at a lower cost than the previously used short rounds. A jumbo developed in the Tri-State can be extended to mine ore left in the roof up to 65 ft above the floor. Drill-rod life was formerly considered to be about 250 min of actual use. The increase in the drilling time per rod per day has gone up considerably with the development of the jumbo and the long-feed carriage, resulting in which is apparently more rod breakage., Consequently, a great deal of research is being done in the attempt to develop an alloy-steel rod with longer service life to offset the greater cost. Some reports indicate that alloy steel or Swedish steel results in cheaper drilling than conventional drill rod. However, several tests have shown only slightly increased life for alloy drill rod. Undoubtedly, the blow of the rock drill, the length of the drill rod, and the resiliency of the rock being drilled are important factors in the life of drill rod, so it follows that alloy steel might work well in some mines and result in no savings in others. The bit forged on the drill rod is seldom encountered and steel detachable bits are not as common as in the recent past. The one-use bit is gaining popularity because of. the difficulty in rehardening reconditioned steel bits satisfactorily. It is thought that the, carbie-insert bit is most applicable to drilling hard &apos;rock&apos; where the steel bit is unable to drill out a full change, for instance, in extremely abrasive

THE sudden realization that known sulphur reserves amenable to mining by the Frasch hot water process are nearing exhaustion focused attention on widely scattered surface deposits throughout the world. These deposits are not necessarily of lower sulphur content than ores located underneath Louisiana or Texas salt domes which usually average about 30 pct sulphur disseminated in limestone matrix. Their near surface occurrence, however, renders exploitation by the Frasch process impossible. As is well known, the Frasch process depends on the presence of 500 to 1000 ft of overburden and cap rock above the sulphur deposits to permit melting underground sulphur in place by diffusing hot water under pressures of 200 to 600 psig in the formation and raising the molten sulphur to surface by air lift. This process renders possible the production of pure sulphur which is 99.5 pct pure without any subsequent treatment. Surface deposits contain sulphur in the same range of concentrations as the salt dome deposits, i.e., from 10 to 50 pct sulphur, associated with various gangue materials such as silica, limestone, and gypsum. The pirincipal distinction, then, does not lie in the percentage of sulphur contained in the ore, but in the geological nature of the deposit. A recent study&apos; of the world sulphur supply situation estimated 1950 sulphur production in the free world countries at 5.6 million long tons, of which the United States produced 5.2 million tons, or 93 pct of the total. While America&apos;s domestic needs alone would have been covered by national production, about 1.4 million tons were exported during the same year. Despite all the steps which are being taken to restrict use of elemental sulphur and to force the fullest possible development of alternate sulphur sources here and abroad, the deficit in elemental sulphur production will probably increase with time. As a result of intensive prospecting for oil throughout the Gulf Coast area discovery of significant new salt domes is held unlikely. With the growing scarcity of sulphur and what appears to be an inevitable rise in price, recovery from deposits not amenable to Frasch-process mining assumes greater economic importance. Untapped Reserves The most important deposits in this category are located in Sicily, where elemental sulphur occurs in Miocene limestone and gypsum formation. Sulphur content of these ores ranges from 12 to 50 pct with an estimated average of 26 pct. Although quantitative estimate of these reserves is not available it is held that they exceed 50 million tons of sulphur. Similar deposits occur also on the mainland which contribute about one-third of Italy&apos;s total current annual production of 230,000 tons, but these are known to be nearing exhaustion. Significant surface deposits of volcanic origin are located in South America, Japan and western United States, silica being characteristic gangue con-stituent. The largest of these deposits are in South America. More than 100 extend over a zone 3000 miles long, paralleling the west coast of South America. &apos;Total sulphur content of these deposits has been estimated to be as high as 100 million tons. The main islands of Japan also possess at least 40 known volcanic sulphur deposits with probable reserves of 25 to 50 million tons.&apos; Prospected reserves in western United States might amount to 2 million long tons, principal deposits being located in the northwestern part of Wyoming, southern Utah, and eastern California. Volcanic deposits of lesser importance are found around the Mediterranean, in Turkey and Greece, and in Africa, Egypt, Abyssinia, and Somaliland. Beneficiation Methods Different methods of beneficiation have been used in these various locations. In Italy the Calcarone kiln and Gill regenerative furnaces are used exclusively. Both utilize heat liberated by burning part of the sulphur in the ore to liquify or vaporize the remaining sulphur, which is recovered by solidification or condensation. The Calcarone kiln is of conical shape, generally 35 ft in diam at base and 18 ft high. A kiln of 25,000 cu ft capacity burns for about two months and yields about 200 tons of sulphur. The Gill furnace consists of a series of chambers with domed roofs. Sulphur is burned and melted in one chamber at a time and the hot combustion gases are used to preheat the ore charge in the subsequent cell. These furnaces operate on a cycle of 4 to 8 days. The recovery yield of both systems is about 65 pct. Sulphur losses amount to 25 pct through the combustion to sulphur dioxide; about 10 pct is retained in discarded calcines. Ores containing less than 20 pct are not considered suitable as furnace feed. These methods are not only wasteful because of the low recovery obtained, but represent a serious atmospheric pollution problem. Sulphur produced ranges from 96 to 99 pct purity and thus does not match Texas or Louisiana sulphur. Owing to the present shortage, sulphur in the Middle East sells

At Barrick&apos;s Zaldivar Copper Mine in Chile, the addition of sulfuric acid to the ore going to heap leaching is a major expense. A process in which a portion of this acid is replaced by elemental sulfur added to the heap has been developed by Barrick and Westcoast Biotech that has the potential for significant cost savings. Initial shake flask tests with plant raffinate solution indicated that oxidation of elemental sulfur by a culture of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, some indigenous to the Zaldivar heap, showed a significant lag period. This lag period could be reduced by dilution of the raffinate, but dilution would not be economical to implement at Zaldivar. Short (0.75 m) column tests indicated that after the initial lag period, sulfur biooxidation occurred steadily and the acid requirement for obtaining the same copper recovery as the control without sulfur was reduced by as much as 13 kg/t. These tests were followed by taller (5.1 m) column tests that confirmed the reduction in acid consumption, with no negative effect on copper extraction.
