PRACTICALLY all of Quebec's chrysotile asbestos production derives from twelve mining and milling operations located in the "Eastern Townships" area of the province. The annual output of these twelve operations exceeds one million tons of chrysotile asbestos, valued at over one hundred million dollars, and is shipped to manufacturers spread over all six continental areas of the world. A total of approximately twenty million ton of asbestos ore yearly, or about seventy-five thousand tons a day, is mined. Individually, the operations vary in size from about two thousand tons to thirty thousand tons per day. Removal of waste rock and overburden to develop these ore tonnages varies greatly from one mine to another, but would probably average out at about a one to one ratio.

Rechargeable lithium batteries are one of the most promISIng technology in battery development. Although Li ion batteries have been used as an alternative to the more polluting and less performing Ni-Cd batteries, Li ion batteries have limited life and their disposal is uncertain. It is imperative that valuables from wastes, such as lithium, should be recovered. The main objective of the present work was to characterize secondary lithium batteries for cellular phones. This was done using unit operations of mining processing, x-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analyses and the rmogravimetric analysis (TG). The unit operations were hammer mill grinding, knife mill grinding, size separation and magnetic separation. After the hammer grinding process, the plastic cases were almost intact, however, they have released the cylindrical lithium batteries themselves and these parts correspond to 70% of the total battery weight.

In the pursuit of commercial solutions for environmental issues, individual problems are often identified, considered and resolved in isolation from other environmental matters and always at the end of the cycle û after the problem has been created. Inter-relationships are neglected if they are not seen to obviously impact on a specific problem and the issue at hand is plucked from the environmental landscape and dealt with in total isolation to all else. In a Zero Waste approach to environmental matters, all outputs are pursued as potential inputs. Industrial processes are viewed as a variation on natureÆs theme and opportunity pursued above all else. When viewed from this perspective, industry appears to have forgotten its origins. It has forgotten that it is principally about people. The juggernaut of global trade has forgotten that it is a small part of a big landscape and that its principal participants, people, cannot exist without healthy soil. Commercial activity in all parts of the world relies heavily on the ability of agriculture to produce the necessary inputs for industrial production. The care and nurturing of our soils is fundamental, not only to the survival of humanity, but also to the economic systems that support that humanity and to the industry which profits by it. Actual levels of domestic recycling in many countries around the world seldom reflect the 90 plus per cent desire to recycle recorded in surveys conducted by local authorities in almost every country. If the desire to recycle is far removed from the end result, why is it that the systems provided are so ineffective? It is obvious that what we do need is a recycling system that both engages and rewards the participant and stimulates the innate desire to support the environment. A recent trial in New South Wales, Australia, demonstrated that by giving individual households credits for recycling organic wastes, not only will contamination levels fall dramatically, but increased yields, improved soil structure, improved land values, reduced fertiliser costs and increased water use efficiency give the farmer good economic reasons for purchasing and applying quality composted product. By underpinning and securing the agricultural community, we secure the future of industry. The æCity to SoilÆ project linked the economic on-farm benefits of compost use with reduced contamination through the provision of rewards paid for by the purchase of product by the farmer.

Rather than look at the problems associated with sampling, this paper deals with the issue of sampling and blending to optimise revenue û predominantly in the mining industry. An example of the use of this methodology in the agriculture industry is also presented. Mining companies, in particular, are experiencing a boom in commodity prices and many believe the industry is in the middle of a æsuper cycleÆ. Production levels are being escalated dramatically to meet the demand coming from China and India. This in turn has further stretched the capacity of our rail and port infrastructure û resulting in significant shipping queues around most Australian commercial ports and increased demurrage costs for the producers. Mining companies are now looking for effective scheduling, planning and blending to maximise production and reduce demurrage charges û given the current infrastructure constraints. Mining companies can no longer use spreadsheets to run their business. This paper further looks at how these outcomes can be met by optimised blending using an integrated supply chain management system such as MineTrak together with effective sampling and analysis.

The United States is the world's most productive nation and its citizens enjoy one of the highest material standards of living of any people in the world. Materials and energy are the lifeblood of any industrialized economy. Annually the United States uses over 4 billion tons of mineral materials and fuels, or 40,000 pounds per person as detailed in Figure 1. Domestic processed materials of mineral origin and energy are valued at more than $150 billion annually, and they are derived largely from domestic sources, supplemented by imports, as detailed in Figure 2. In recent years the superior productivity of the United States has also enabled it to give food and manufactured articles to many other less fortunate nations and peoples of the earth. What then is our concern with materials at this time? Seeing the burgeoning increases in our mineral demand: from 2 billion tons in 1950, to over 4 billion tons today, and projected to 11 billion tons by 2000 - we are getting questions concerning our ability to continue to increase production sufficiently for the future.

Real option value (ROV) method is considered to be more practical and advanced compared to net present value (NPV) method in evaluating a mining project, in particularly when there is substantial uncertainty in the commodity market as well as possible operational flexibility embedded in the project. Usually, it may take months or even years for the commodity product to be available in the market after the mining activation decision is made. The impacts of postponing the delivery of commodity product on the mine?s ROV and NPV are assessed based on the proposed real option method. Postponing the delivery of the products leads to declined NPV and ROV compared to the non-postponing scenario and extended postpone results in higher lost values in NPV and ROV. For a mine with lower mining cost, by postponing the delivery, the exercising threshold of commodity price is lower because the mine owner anticipates that commodity price may rise during the time of postponing. A mine with higher mining cost requires a higher exercising price threshold to ?lock up? the profit when there is ambiguity of market situation due to the postponing of the delivery.

"Reducing the amount of zinc and iron in lead concentrate is one of the important aspects of processing in lead and zinc flotation plants which results in improvement of lead concentrate quality and prevents zinc loss. In mineral flotation industries, lignin sulfonates are known for their depressant properties for both non-metallic and sulfide minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite.This paper investigates the effect of lignin sulfonate on flotation of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in sulfidic lead and zinc bearing ores. Batch flotation tests were carried out on a high pre-activated zinc samples. The feed contains 0.9% lead, 2.3% zinc and 7.5% iron. The dosage of all reagents such as sodium cyanide, zinc sulfate, ethyl xanthate and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were kept constant for lead flotation step except calcium lignin sulfonate (CLS) that was varied between 0 and 80 gr/ton.Results for lead rougher concentrate showed that the grade of lead increased by 2.7% while the recovery decreased around 4 % at the highest dosage of CLS. Furthermore, zinc recovery decreased by 6.3% with no significant change in grade. Iron recovery in lead rougher concentrate decreased by 2.3 % while the grade changed around 1%. In sphalerite flotation step, CLS dosage was changed in the range of 0 to 80 gr/ton while the dosage of other reagents such as copper sulfate, lime, amil xanthate and MIBC were kept constant. In this step, no decreasing in grade and recovery of zinc was observed, while iron recovery decreased. It was suggested that CLS has a depression effect on sphalerite in conjunction with other zinc depressants such as zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide. CLS was further used in plant with non-pre-activated zinc minerals. Similar trends were observed in plant.INTRODUCTIONlead-zinc sulfide minerals play an important role in the production of lead and zinc metals in the mineral processing industry (Luo, Feng et al. 2016). Due to complexity of the lead-zinc ores mineralogy, in some situations, their flotation properties vary significantly from one deposit to another one even in itself (Bulatovic 2007)."

Mining has played a significant role in human development and without the mining sector, society would not enjoy a large number of the benefits that it does today. However, mining has also carried with it some important lessons, which remain the source of ongoing learning. One of these lessons is the poor closure or abandonment of mines, worldwide. This has in many cases resulted in large tracts of unproductive land, representing a source of environmental pollution and a safety hazard to the community. Frequently associated with this is a legacy of mining communities having fallen into economic and social decline, beyond mine closure.Due to this legacy, governments, society and the mining sector pay far greater attention to mine closure planning today, than was done in the past. Typically closure planning has focused on the engineering aspects of a mine, namely decommissioning of the workings and plant; dismantling of unusable infrastructure; and rehabilitation of disturbed land. These are important aspects of closure but a more holistic, long-term approach is required which encompasses environmental and social aspects and aims to leave a positive legacy behind.In planning for a mine closure scenario with a lasting positive legacy, it is critical that the broader receiving environments (social, economic, physical and biological) within which a mine is located, define and drive the closure plan and the mine planning as a whole. This ensures that the broader environment influences mine closure, as opposed to looking at how a closed mine will impact on the environment. The ultimate aim is to first understand the broader environment and then to fit the closure of a mine into it. The earlier this approach is followed in the life of a mine, the greater the operational time frame available, and hence a better chance is presented for planning and managing a mine towards the desired, tested and agreed post closure scenario. Within this broad context, there is tremendous scope to achieve successful mine closure. However, it is critical to note that mine closure is not the sole responsibility of the mining companies, and neither is it possible for said mining companies to achieve mining closure alone. This concerted effort requires a multi-stakeholder approach in which partnerships are created and risks, responsibilities and opportunities are shared and managed. To achieve sustainable closure, a multi-stakeholder approach based on an initial forward-looking closure vision is required. This approach provides an early basis for consideration of alternative land uses and economic options from which specific actions to achieve the preferred option can be defined. The Anglo American plc Mine Closure Toolbox has been formulated and developed around this concept. The Toolbox aims to expand mine closure planning - from financial provisioning for rehabilitation and physical closure, to planning for sustainability beyond mine closure and leaving behind a positive legacy.This paper focuses on the business case for mine closure planning and provides an overview of the Anglo American plc (AAplc) Mine Closure Toolbox.CITATION:Botha, P R, 2012. "In ordinary manufacture process of tungsten powder, a preferable intermediate product used is ammonium paratungstate (APT). The particle size of tungten powder made from it through W2OO58 is larger than 1. 0 um. In order to obtain ultrafine tungsten powder with narrow size distribution, a new type of tungstate, hydraziniull tungstate, was studied. Its formula is 5(N2H5)2O·12 WO.s , with tetragonal crystal structure of a=5.821 , c=18. 468. Three methods for preparing hydrazinium tungstate (ART) were set up and ART can be produced by current industrial APT process with little modification of operation and without any change of equipment.Under certain PH and operation condition of the solution from which ART was produced, an autoreduction of tungsten occured, which produced a lower valency tungstate with blue color when ART was heated at different temperatures, in N atmosphere, tungsten bronze, tetragonal W0290 and W02.7E could be obtained respectively. They all have the superiorities, in the production of tungsten powder, of superfine size and narrow size distribution [average size of 0.5um or even smaller.The rate of autoreduction of ART is very fast at elevated temperature. The reduction reaction, which gaves tetragonal WO290, could be handled smoothly without explosion. To research their behaviors at autoreduction temperatures and the products of autoreduction will be new advances of tungsten chemistry and may also serve tungsten industry with new processes and materials."

World demand for iron ore is far from peaking, and the substantial price decline that has captivated commentators since early 2014 is not the result of widespread misreading by producers of the prospects for global market growth. Recent price movements provide little useful insight into the industry’s longer-term fortunes, apart from reminding mining companies that their businesses need to be robust against the volatility and inescapable cyclicality of mineral commodity markets. In recent years the trend in copper smelting has been to expand existing smelters to increase their throughput. New smelters under consideration are large, typically in excess of 200,000 tons per year of copper. Despite this trend to larger smelters there are a number of conditions where a much smaller smelter can be economically viable. This paper examines these conditions and outlines the process concepts for a small smelter treating from 20,000 to 100,000 tons per year of copper.

Synthetic gypsum utilization as an alternative to the naturally occurring mineral continues to grow in the gypsum industry. In particular, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum produced by the electrical utility industry has had a significant impact and a far-reaching effect on the gypsum wallboard manufacturing industry. This paper will discuss the various synthetic gypsum sources verses natural gypsum and highlight issues of use in gypsum wallboard and related products.

Mining is big business in Ontario. The province is Canada?s leading mining region. It consistently ranks among the top 10 jurisdictions worldwide for exploration spending, reaching about C$1 billion in 2011. More than 26 percent of all exploration and appraisal dollars spent in Canada are invested in Ontario. Minerals produced include nickel, copper, platinum group elements (PGE), cobalt, zinc, diamonds, gold and silver. It was reported that there are more than 600 mining exploration projects in the province. And, recent discoveries of chromite in northern Ontario?s Ring of Fire will add to the province?s mineral production in the coming years.

"Depending on the application, zirconia, fused magnesia and graphite have been found to be the most suitable crucible materials for melting uranium metal and its alloys. Although graphite has been found to be satisfactory for uranium and uranium alloy castings with cross sections of 4 square inches or greater, ceramic-type molds are superior for small sections and those shaped castings which prohibit the economic use of machined graphite molds. Heating cycles, addition mechanisms and furnace conditions for melting are discussed."

Risk is a major factor in all mining activities, arising from many internal and external variables. The authors? research has resulted in a systematic method for the quantification of risk in mining projects (Park, 2012). This research will be presented in a series of papers, this one and two more that will be published on Mining Engineering?s web site, www.me.smenet.com. This paper identifies the variables associated with risk in mining projects, and their effects. The second paper discusses methods of assessing the overall risk associated with those variables, and presents a statistical model based on a survey of 31 experts. The third paper presents an evaluation of the statistical model, using data from previous mining investment decisions in which the authors have been involved. There are several major competing entities, including BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Anglo American, Xstrata, Freeport-McMoRan, Chinese government- run companies and Japanese trading companies, that have large foreign holdings, controlling deposits in most of the world?s established and productive mining districts. In general, the mining industry considers the United States, Canada, Australia and the European countries to have good mining investment environments, but because the major companies have already achieved market dominance in those countries, large investments are required there. Newcomers seeking to enter the industry, either as producing companies or as investing partners, often have difficulty breaking into these established markets. Thus newcomers are increasingly turning to new areas like South America and Africa, which are relatively less developed. The competition among businesses to secure a share of the new market is intense, but there are still good investment opportunities. However, because most of the countries in these areas are not well developed, several additional risks are associated with participation in mining projects in those areas.

SPANIARDS were probably the first to mine the rich surface ore in the veins cutting the rhyolite capping that outcrops on the hills of La Mazata, oil the Allyones side of the Magdalena valley in Jalisco, Mexico, although the name comes from a word of Indian origin meaning "deer". The camp is about 12 km. west of Magdalena, a town on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and about 17 km. north of Etzatlán, on the Mexican National Railroad, at an elevation of 4500 ft. The climate is subtropical with no extremes of heat or cold, the rainy season beginning in June and ending in October.

DESTRUCTION of the plants, machines, utilities, tools, materials, and other essentials for peacetime living penalizes not only the owners of the materials destroyed, but the world as a whole. Specifically, the fundamental fallacy of any proposal for the in- discriminate destruction of the German industrial system is that it fails to differentiate between the wartime and the peacetime economy of the Reich. We are for one simple, clear objective-an effective industrial means to keep Germany from starting another war. This objective should not be con- fused, especially before the war is even won, with the appropriate punishment of Germany or with the international arrangements for the long future to be made around the peace table by the representatives of the Allied Nations after victory is achieved. This paper, therefore, does not deal with broad, complex postwar questions of diplomacy and international policy. "Unconditional surrender" implies disarmament of the German armies, the surrender of all arms, munitions, air- planes, and other ordnance material in stock piles or in process. It also should include the elimination of all German war production facilities, such as ordnance plants, munitions plants, and submarine works, and the control of raw materials required by war industries.

A THOROUGHLY satisfactory crowd turned out at the fall meeting of the Industrial Minerals Division and took an active part in the entire program. On Thursday afternoon, Sept. 24, a limestone plant was inspected, technical sessions occupying the attention of the visitors all day Friday and Saturday morning. Headquarters were at the Nittany Lion Inn, an attractive hostel on the Penn State campus, at State College, right in the center of Pennsylvania. We are still in the dark, despite inquiries, as to just what breed of lions Nittany lions are. As nearly as we could find out, Nittany is not a Biblical name, as it sounded to us, but a corruption of the name of an Indian princess, or maiden, or maybe just girl that haunted those parts in bygone times and after whom a near-by mountain was named. Penn State athletes are "lions" and there you are. The meeting was supposed to be a joint one with the American Ceramic Society's Materials and Equipment Division; but it was quite evident that the Institute had a much better publicity agent than the Society, which bothered Ross. Purdy, the aggressive secretary of the ceramic people, no end. However, Secretary Purdy saw to it that everyone present fully understood that the Ceramic Society was present, so that that contingent all but stole the show, its representatives presiding at every meeting. The Pittsburgh Section of the American Ceramic Society was also supposed to be holding its fall meeting there at the same time, but made no trouble at all for anybody, as one of the speakers remarked.
