Political risk is an integral part of the mining business in Northern Andean countries. Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela all have a higher than average political risk compared with other South American countries. Successful operations in such contexts require: 1. Good political risk information; 2. A thoroughgoing political risk management plan; and 3. A strategy to deal with political risk perception on the part of the investing public. Obtaining quality political risk information, developing a political risk management plan, and addressing political risk perception are the foci of this work.

Environmental issues and how they are addressed -- or not addressed -- by the lead industry in the 1990s will determine the eventual fate of lead mining in both the U.S. and worldwide. Clearly, governmental regulation throughout the West will become harsher. Equally clearly, the industry has? failed to educate the public regarding lead. Instead of public support for a critical mineral, we face widespread public ignorance and paranoia. If we can demonstrate the public interest benefits of the industry, the 1990s will be a decade of continuing growth -- not dynamic growth, certainly, but growth at least comparable to the world economy. If, however, we fail to demonstrate the industry's public interest benefits, the 1990s could mark the beginning of the end of our business.

Wollastonite, a calcium metasilicate, derives its name from the man who discovered the mineral, Doctor William H. Wollaston, an English scientist. OCCURENCE Occurences of the mineral have been noted in Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Mexico and in the United States in Texas, California, Arizona, and New York. The only commercial deposit now being exploited is at Willsboro, New York. It is mined and processed by the Cabot Corporation whose home offices are in Boston, Massachusetts.

"Phosphate rock is shipped by boat from Florida to Vancouver, B.C., where it is unloaded and stored in a 50,000-ton silo. It is shipped from Vancouver in 100-ton hopper cars in 80-car trains to Fort Saskatchewan. Both the ship and the hopper cars are on a back-haul with potash. The rock cars are unloaded at Fort Saskatchewan at a rate of approximately 4 cars per hour. The rock is stored in three concrete silos, 40 ft in diameter by 110 ft high, which hold 18,000 tons of recoverable rock with 2,000 tons dead space. The rock is reclaimed from the silos by gravity and fed to the phosphoric acid plant by remotely operated conveying equipment.Problems encountered in the operation include scheduling the rock shipments, contamination of the rock with potash, and handling the 80-car trains both in Vancouver and Fort Saskatchewan."

A forecast of the consequences of our techniques and goods produced, at least a technical assessment will be demanded from us as an industry. The hydrometallurgical winning of zinc is therefore at a crossroads. New processes promise not only better economics, better maintenance of resources and simpler operation, but also more harmony with nature. Pressure leaching promises to eliminate roasting and thus one complete process step. The hematite process solves a difficult and always costly iron problem. HOA opens a possible road to a totally new ,generation of electrolysis. Zinc has a long tradition behind it. Its? importance is as great as ever-. There is still room for new production developments. In my estimation there are good chances for successful new techniques? which will benefit our whole industry. Zinc is a modern and forward-looking metal.

"Approximately two thirds of annual nickel production is used as a raw material in the making of stainless steel, and about 60% of these nickel products are in the form of metallic nickel such as nickel cathode or briquettes. In the stainless-steel production process nickel is blended with iron and chrome-based raw materials, and metallic nickel is typically only required for final steel fine-tuning. Outotec offers a new FeCrNi technology to enhance the nickel value chain for stainless steel producers. This involves the use of an HPAL-based intermediate nickel product (e.g., mixed hydroxides or NiO) as raw material in the Outotec FeCrNi process, for the production of a FeCrNi Master Alloy. The new process, designated as the FeCrNi process, offers multiple benefits compared to existing technologies such as: higher tolerance for impurities in the HPAL intermediate product, avoiding the need for further nickel refining, and the improved recovery of all metals in the FeCr process. The complete new FeCrNi value chain is based on proven technologies such as HPAL and the Outotec FeCr-process. This new innovative and promising value chain offers improved efficiencies for the HPAL based nickel production process combined with excellent sustainability aspects.INTRODUCTION In today’s global economy there is a constant need to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the metals production. The requirements for modern metal refining are tightening and cost efficient, safe and sustainable operation is the precondition for all investment. Outotec is offering now a novel way to combine FeCr and Nickel production to create a completely new value chain to source nickel to stainless steel. BACKGROUND Nickel The current nickel mine production is in the level of 2,000 tons annually and it is split 44% from sulphide based deposits and 56% from laterite deposits (Figure 1). Most (40%) of the nickel is refined to pure nickel metal whereas other products are FeNi (19%) and Nickel Pig Iron NPI (20%) (Roskill). The remaining part, roughly 21%, is nickel chemicals and intermediates. Most of the new investments in nickel are in the direct shipping of laterite to produce nickel pig iron. HPAL process is considered in few projects but no major HPAL projects have been started since the Ambatovy plant in Madagascar. Ambatovy reached the commercial production in 2014. The main primary nickel used is stainless steel manufacturing. In the year 2016 about 68% (~1,360 kt) of primary nickel production was used in stainless steel."

Surface mining of coal in the South developed into a major industry during the 1960's. The economic significance of the industry is much greater than is readily apparent when one considers only the value of the coal mined. The abun-dant supply of relatively inexpensive steam coal for electric power generation that has been derived from the surface mines has provided the foundation for the industrial expansion that has occurred throughout the South. The region, in gen-eral, has enjoyed the benefits of plentiful low cost electric power. However, re-cent political decisions, at all levels of government, threaten to destroy or severely curtail the surface mining of coal and eliminate the economic advantages once enjoyed by the region. These political decisions are rapidly changing the basic rules of operation and fundamental economics of surface coal mining. Recent changes, resulting from the enactment of environmental and health and safety laws and various bureaucratic rules and regulations, have had a three-fold effect: 1) Greatly increased operating cost, 2) increased lead times for mine development, 3) limited potential reserve base for future mining. Also current legislative proposals are casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of all coal mining operations that has created serious delays and in-creased cost for the expansion of the coal industry necessary to meet our project independence goals. Technology Surface mining is the safest and most economical way to produce raw materials from the earth's crust. It also affords a more healthier working environment for the individual miner. The authors have presented their ideas for developing a powder sampling device in the I-Corps™ program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is an intensive customer discovery program developed to increase the economic impact of the research sponsored by NSF.The I-Corps™ program requires performing at least 100 interviews with potential customers in various industries. These interviews are essential to establish the need for a particular product or solution, and identify potential commercialisation partners and competition. The interviews have revealed the absence of Theory of Sampling (TOS) principles in many companies. The interviews are designed to identify the difficulties associated with current sampling practices that do not meet TOS principles.The I-Corps™ program is a significant challenge for scientists who often avoid discussing a concept in fear of losing their research idea. The program teaches how to obtain information without releasing the important intellectual property related to a product development idea. The I-Corps™ methods have been used to discover the prevailing ideas on sampling in various industries.I-Corps™ also teaches how to present ideas to investors; another significant challenge for a scientist. WHAT is a die-casting and what is the die-casting industry? From the literal translation of the words "die" and "casting"' one concludes that a die-casting is a casting made in a die. The casting may be of any metal or alloy or, for that matter, may be of some nonmetallic material capable of being cast, such as plaster of paris or glass. The die may be of any material that will take successive casts so it need not necessarily be metallic in nature. The term "die-casting," therefore, is indeed broad, though in practical usage it has come to mean the casting of metals and their alloys in metallic molds or dies. Even this limitation of the term leaves -a broad field, for castings may be made in a number of different ways. For example, the molten metal may be allowed to run into the die by gravity it may be sucked into the cavity of the die, it may be forced to take the contour of the cavity in the die by centrifiugal force, or it may be forced into the cavity under hydrostatic pressure. MINING geology is a progressive study, so we must look to the future for the solution of many of its most significant problems. These problems, world-wide in scope, offer ample opportunity for the exercise of the utmost skill and intelligence by all that attempt to solve theta, as it is generally recognized that many ore deposits of the future will he found only by months or years of combined intelligent effort by the several engineering groups. Renewed appraisals are continually being made to better understand the relationship of physical-chemical processes to ore deposition and other mineralization and to interpret the findings of the geophysicists and others in terms of economic results. A study of current geologic activi¬ties clearly reflects the growing tendency for cooperation between the different branches of geology in order to appraise their united efforts. In line with these activities arrangements have been made to transfer the geophysical section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines to the Geological Survey.

WE are all interested in our ou7n lines of endeavor and consider ourselves the center of the universe. The farmer thinks he is the most important man because he feeds us. The doctor knows he is the real center because he keeps us well. The lawyer says that he is indispensable because he keeps the peace. The banker furnishes us a place to keep our money and tells us how to make proper use of it. The miner sags that without metals there would be no civilization. I think that my branch has sufficient interest and exhilaration. of accomplishment to fully occupy any man's mind and attention. Mining and metallurgy are as old as the human race. It did not have much, if any, importance in the stone age as there are not found remains of iron and copper, but in the bronze age, which was co-existent with the stone age, it came to the front. Iron and copper were the most important metals. Copper, as bronze, was known in ancient Egypt, I\~:IS important in Rome and other parts of Europe and in Asia; in South America among the Aztecs and farther North were the Mound Builders and the early inhabitants of Lake Superior. At a very early date the Egyptians conquered the Sinai peninsula for the sake of the copper produced there. The history of copper metallurgy can be compared to that of a flower. The seed is sown in darkness and in the Dark Ages the crude metallurgy of copper began. As the shoot comes up from the seed it may be compared to the age of alchemy; the branches of the plant can be compared to the Middle Ages; the flowering shoots to the 17th century, the budding to the 19th and the blossom to our own time from 1870 on.

T HE chairman of the Mines Committee of the A. 1: E. E. for 1920-21 has had the honor of being also the chairman of a similar committee, the Mine Equipment Committee, of the A. I. M. E. It has been the endeavor during the past year to have the two committees work together since the object of these committees is very much the same. A meeting of the committees was held in Chicago in November of 1920, at which time it was decided that one of the best ways to work together would be to foster joint meetings of the local sections of the A. I. E. E. and A. I. M. E. By these meetings, it was hoped that various engineers in the local sections interested in mining subjects could be brought together and not only become better acquainted but be greatly benefited by the interchange of ideas and by the discussion of papers presented on mining subjects.

Crude or Crude Iron The name crude or crude iron is recommended for the iron produced from ore by the blast furnace. When necessary it can be specified as pig iron when in the form of pigs (usually cold), or as molten iron, commonly called hot metal to distinguish it from cold iron in pigs. The product of a direct process of making wrought or malleable iron from ore is not included.

There has been some discussion between Mr. Kelly and myself as to our respective duties on this occasion: The precedents are not clear as to whether the retiring or the incoming president is expected to speak at length. Mr. Kelly's argument was that as the incoming president confines himself to promises for the future his field is a broad one and his opportunities for extending his remarks correspondingly unlimited.

THE paramount subject of interest and concern at the present time is the readjustment in economic conditions following the cataclysmic disturbance produced by the war and the misconceptions leading to an orgy of extravagance that prevailed during two years following the armistice he, time is too short for me to undertake to review the nature and extent of the upheavals occurring between August, 1914, and October, 1920. Bulky volumes will be written about them. . But I shall have to refer to some of the results in order to outline a prognosis. It is the future, not the past;' that is of most interest to us. Let me be so bold as to say, without further preface, that I am not optimistic as to the near future. .We shall, indeed, have revivals in trade, but they will be delusive if their nature be not 'understood. We shall build hopes and expectations upon political maneuvers and events, only to find in the end that they were folly. In the meanwhile fundamental economic influences will continue to exert their steady and irresistible pressure. The new administratiow at Washington has no magic wand with which to kindle the fires in our idle steel furnaces, or create a million new houses for the people; nor can the premiers of Europe put into motion the spindles of the cotton and woolen mills, or by any incantations compel the people of the Orient to buy goods. The people of the Orient, and of, Europe, and of the two Americas are in the grip of the same economic forces. The readjustment has proceeded further in some parts of the world than in others. In the United States I do not think we, have gone more than over the threshold. I shall tell you why 1 think thus, but in telling you I shall be limited, in view of the immensity of the subject, to a series of bald statements, without much elucidation.

IN most applied sciences there are two distinct methods of carrying out research and development work. One of these, the theoretical, attempts to solve problems that may arise and to predict facts of practical importance by the application of the various laws of science, the other, the experimental method, attempts to each the 'same goal by obtaining data and trying out various processes in the laboratory. Since individuals frequently find themselves better adapted for one or the other type of procedure, it is natural that -two groups should 'arise, both working toward the sane objective but with somewhat different points of view, although many in each group are thoroughly competent in both fields. Metallurgy, in particular, offers an excellent opportunity for a comparison of the two methods.

The mining limit in oil sands is regulated by the ratio of total mining volume (ore, interburden, and overburden) one has to mine per volume of bitumen in place (TV/BIP). This paper presents a mathematical solution for creating the most economical pit outline where the TV/BIP ratio upper limit is 12, by combining mining economic theory and the Lerchs-Grossmann (LG) algorithm.
