THE mineral industry of Canada relies heavily upon the talent of its technical men. It is vital to the well-being of the industry that its supply of young, trained men be adequate. At the present time, the industry is acquiring only 200 new graduates a year. The shrinking supply is far below present and future requirements. Other industries and research organizations are competing for engineers and scientists. Dr. J. B. Mawdsley (1), Past-President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, has recently outlined a program designed to attack the problem. Dr. J'. C. Sproule (2), another former President of the Institute, has stated that: "The need for selection of trainee material is commonly recognized, but little is done about it." The following paper contains a short discussion of occupational interests, and outlines research, using psychological knowledge and measuring techniques, aimed at the identification of desirable recruits for the mineral industry.

Many Third World countries of Third World Africa are well-endowed with minerals, especially gold. Political and economic conditions discouraged interest by Western capital for the several decades since colonial rule. Influence from Eastern Block countries has gone and the left wing orientation widely favored by Third World countries has almost disappeared. Under International Monetary Fund influence, these countries now solicit Western finance to expand their industries. Mining is especially encouraged. The paper describes the financing of some recent developments and examines trends and opportunities in some of the more attractive countries.

Ausmelt Technology has been developed to process copper concentrates containing significant levels of lead, arsenic and antimony. A process was developed aimed at smelting these concentrate materials to remove the contaminants to fume and produce a clean copper product. The production of clean copper and the potential economic benefits of this process step over the sale of impure concentrates is discussed.

The expansion of the mining industry, with other industries, of course, is dependent upon a supply of fresh capital from year to year. Mining is a speculative form of investment, though there is a wide range of risk as between indiudual undertakings. All of the leading financial writers, nowadays, agree that expansion is being seriously interfered with by the unprecedented load of taxation Canadians are carrying. Individuals have less for investment and corporations are obliged to defer necessary expenditures in order that the demands of the taxing authorities may be met. Naturally, speculative investments such as mining exploration suffer first. Undoubtedly, a great deal of cash raised by taxes, if left in the hands of individuals and corporations for investment and expansion, would have been far more beneficially used and would have developed the country more than any use made of it by the government, in the way of bonusing new industries, or the undertaking of large schemes of development. Government undertakings of this nature are often entered into without a proper knowledge of cost and probable return. Expert expenditure of the same sums by business men or corporations undoubtedly would generally produce more prosperity for the country as a whole. The absolute necessity for lower taxation is being increasingly known to the public at large, and eventually it is hoped that our governments will see the economic impossibility of continuing the present rate of expenditure. The successful Finance Minister of the near future will not be the one who can borrow the most money.

"1880s - Unmasking the Sudbury Basin Falconbridge Ltd. turned 60 in 1988 but its roots go back more than a century to the discovery and development of the mineral resources of the Sudbury Basin. Nickel was first identified in the area in 1856 but sustained exploration awaited the early 1880s and the advance of the CPR westward from Sudbury. Rock was laid bare in the right-of-way and by forest fires and logging. Reddish oxidized outcropping or ""gossan"" were exposed, heralding the presence of nickel as the shape of this astounding geological formation gradually began to emerge. Many great mines of the area were opened up in this period on the south rim of the Basin west of Sudbury. To the east the ore dips below overburden, however, and Falconbridge remained a mere dot on the map until the turn of the century when Thomas Edison detected a magnetic occurrence by dip needle."

THE basic products of the Company are lead and zinc. Around 950 tons of these metals are produced each day. In the last decade, the production of by-products has increased to such an extent that they are now nearly as large an operation as that of the base-metals. Of the many by-products, the most objectionable, and up to a few years ago the most useless, was the sulphur. The sulphur comes in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is in the ore chiefly as lead, zinc, and iron sulphide. By selective flotation, these three sulphides are separated into the lead concentrates, the zinc concentrates, and the mill tailings. These mill tailings contain the bulk of the iron and the sulphur. Of the 6,5CO tons of ore treated per day, about 5,000 tons are wasted to the mill tailings dump, and, while now valueless, will in future years undoubtedly be used as a source of iron and sulphur. There are about 1,500 tons of sulphur and 2,200 tons of iron per day in the tailings, and about 400 tons of sulphur left in the total concentrates. In the recovery of lead and zinc in the pure form, the first step is the roasting operation. Here, most of the sulphur is driven off as sulphur dioxide in the gases. It has always been apparent that this sulphur should be. recovered and utilized if possible. At the same time, this would cure the smoke nuisance. Because, in spite of the low concentration of sulphur dioxide and the fact that it was discharged from stacks at an elevation of 400 feet above the plant, some damage to vegetation close to the plant had been experienced.

Traditionally, Mexico has been a mining country. This industry has played a very important role in our country's development, creating jobs, integrating geographical regions - generally very remote from urban communities - and, an essential factor in our present day economy, generating an influx of foreign currency. The Fluorspar mining industry's development started in the 1920?s, but it was not until World War II that its exploitation became consistent and started growing. During the last few years, Mexico has become the world's leading producer, with an annual output of more than one million tons, which directly generates over 3,000 jobs. The actual proven reserves can guarantee fifty years of production at this same annual rate, and it is due to this fact that the producers have not increased their reserves. However, there is concrete information of the existence of several deposits, extending from the northern border to the gulf of Mexico, forming the "Fluorspar Belt? in Mexico.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct its the 2014 National Mining Hall of Fame Class on Sept. 13, 2014 during its 27th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s four inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. Harry M. Conger III, Günther Franz (Frank) Joklik, Ellen Swallow Richards and Dr. Alfred Weiss will join 223 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Conger was a great role model and strong advocate within Homestake Mining Co. and among his industry peers on behalf of environmentally responsible, safe, profitable and high-performance operations. As chairman and chief executive officer, Conger was instrumental in revitalizing and rebuilding Homestake into an industry leader in technological advances and environmental protection. Through his contributions in exploration, project development and operations management as Kennecott president and chief executive, Joklik did much to strengthen Kennecott as a company and assisted in restoring the competitiveness of the U.S. mining industry. Richards is generally recognized as the founder of ecology. She was the very definition of a pioneer in such diverse fields as chemistry, geology and mineralogy, mining and metallurgy, environmental science, public health, home economics and education. Weiss was a true visionary in using quantitative methods and digital computers to aid mineral exploration, plan and design mines, operate mineral production facilities and integrate the disparate information resources throughout a mining company into a modern management information system. NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman, Paul C. Jones, said, ?Again this year we are honored to be able to induct an outstanding group of deserving individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the mining industry in the United States. Included are two living inductees who have made significant contributions to management in the industry. One inductee was the first female graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, its first female faculty member and the first female member of AIME who had an outstanding career as a mineral investigator in the United States. Another inductee was a lifetime innovator in bringing digital technology into common use in our industry. Each of our 2014 inductees made significant and lasting contributions to our industry and are well deserving of becoming a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame.? The Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Ceremony is a marquee event for the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum each year. "Mining as an industry of Utah had its inception in the activities of United States soldiers who came to the Salt Lake valley under the command of Gen. P. E. Connor, founder of Fort Douglas, in October, 1862. Many of these soldiers were from California and naturally employed their spare time in the search for minerals. Although their military status did not permit them to make locations in their own names, they assiduously prospected the region in accordance with their own knowledge and with information conveyed to them by Indians and others. Their efforts were encouraged by their commander, who thereby fairly earned the title of father of the industry here, and by their other officers, and many discoveries that subsequently proved of great value were made by the soldiers.No systematic prospecting or mining had been done in the Territory previously, although early Mormon settlers in the southern portion had mined a little ore from time to time in order to provide supplies of lead for bullets. The Mormon leaders at that time did not encourage mining. They held that agriculture was more important and profitable for their followers.Coal was discovered and produced in 1850. Iron was discovered in 1850 and the first iron plant was in operation in 1852 in Iron County. The first non-ferrous metal production was in 1854, in Beaver County, when Isaac Grundy treated ore from the Rollins mine in what is said to have been the first lead furnace west of the Rocky Mountains. The first mineral location was the West Jordan claim in Bingham canyon, located September 17, 1863, now owned by the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co., and still productive. The first district organized in the state was the West Mountain (Bingham), December I 7, 1863. Other important districts of early organization are: Little Cottonwood, December 20, 1869; Big Cottonwood, July 11, 1870; American Fork, July 21, 1870; Uintah (Park City), July 8, 1871; Tintic, December 13, 1896; Ophir, August 6, 1870. The first silver-lead smelting was by J. W. Gibson at Stockton in 1866. Lieut. James Finnerty had previously erected two small trial furnaces there, but made no quantity production."

Some project managers accept unsatisfactory economic evaluation modelling because they are unaware of what constitutes good practice. They tend to leave it to the evaluation specialist or others to decide. The AusIMM has published on its website a draft set of guidelines for technical economic evaluation which will allow these project managers to take control and demand worldÆs best practices.The style of the guidelines is described and the source of a worked spreadsheet example in Excel is given.Economic evaluation in project management is described. A simple test for the acceptance or rejection of evaluation work is offered. The nature of modelling and evaluation in each of the three study phases of concept, prefeasibility and final feasibility are described. Suggestions on the selection of specialists for each phase are given. The three levels of evaluation thinking are described, namely, modelling, valuation and evaluation. Finally the meaning of æfinancial analysisÆ is explained.The conclusion is that æthe role of an economic evaluation specialist is to create models and evaluations for the whole project team to readily understand and use: it is not to create models for his/her own useÆ.CITATION:Card, P, 2012. Processes involving distillation under reduced pressure were developed at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory several years ago to recover spent acid solutions generated during the manufacture of nuclear fuel for the N-Reactor at the Hanford site. Following construction and testing of a pilot-plant, the technology was licensed to Viatec Recovery Systems, Inc. for commercialization. The technology developed included specialized distillation and rectification of volatile acids, removal of water and/or volatile acid from sulfuric acid, and precipitation of salts. A key feature of the Waste Acid Detoxification and Reclamation (WADR) technology is the development and use of advanced thermoplastic and fluoropolymer materials of construction in all critical process equipment. The technology was then expanded to include crystallization to recover metal salts for possible reuse. Economic and environmental advantages of the procedures include recovery of acids for reuse, simplification or elimination of the disposal of waste solutions, and possible recovery of metals. Industries expected to benefit from such applications include galvanizing, electroplating, sand leaching and any where metals are cleaned in acid solutions. Currently a modular system has been assembled for recovery of several different spent acid solutions.

The advent of open nit mining permitted the development and processing of minerals never before thought possible. New equipment was needed; new techniques were devised; new methods were called for. This development and acquisition of new techniques, methods and equipment did not, however, stir the souls of our industry and educational leaders sufficiently to a recognition of the problem of people, especially the future development of the people needed in open-pit mining. The people problem has been and will be with us as long as there are two of them. The development of people will be required for the same reason. The problem of developing future personnel for open-pit mining is not what must be developed; that is known to all of us and can be briefly stated ashore and better of everything." As I see it, the real problem lies in determining (1) what personnel are really critical, (2) why are they critical and (3) how can we develop them.

Several hundred natural zeolite deposits occur in Tertiary and Cretaceous age formations of the western United States. Most of the large deposits are altered vitroclastic tuffs. Many of these deposits consist of a matrix of a high purity zeolite mineral or minerals in which fragments of unaltered rock are imbedded. These deposits represent an extensive resource of zeolite minerals which can be beneficiated to a consistently uniform, high quality product. The beneficiated natural zeolite products will possess many advantages over the selectively mined, unbeneficiated natural products currently being produced. These advantages will include: uniform particle size, high purity, consistent quality, high brightness, low iron content, high attrition resistence, uniform cation exchange and adsorption capacities, and low price.

"The rare earths industry started in Austria in 1887 by Carl Auer von Welsbach (1858-1929) Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vienna. The process was based on monazite sand transported from Brazil as shipping ballast free of charge. This made possible producing thorium, cerium, and other rare earths at a low cost, thus permitting the growth of the industry. However, once the Brazilian authorities realized the strategic importance of the sand, shipping was stopped. Brazil then started its own processing of the sand in 1949. The background for Auer’s work, the role of Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg, and the invention of the spectroscope will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHeidelberg on the Neckar (Figure 1) was the meeting place for chemistry students from all over Europe in the nineteenth century. Her university founded in 1386 had already a famous professor of chemistry and medecine in the Faculty of Medicine by the name Leopold Gmelin whose three - volume Handbuch der theoretischen Chemie appeared in 1817-1819, that became later a multi-volume monumental work. As successor to Gmelin came Robert Bunsen (Figure 2) in 1852 who made this university town the Mecca of chemistry students. One of his students, the English Henry Roscoe (1833-1915) who became later a distinguished professor in Manchester, described him as follows: ""As an investigator he was great, as a teacher he was greater, as a man and a friend he was greatest""."

INTRODUCTION Information such as application review to choose the proper style of vibrating screen, parameters that determine the proper size of vibrating screen, engineering design information that governors proper screen design, review of topics that govern proper isolation from structural steel and other topics that dictate proper screen selection for applications will be presented in this paper. Topics like process and application information review to choose the style of screen and how material size and type influences proper type of screen selection (multi-slope, incline, horizontal, linear incline or dewatering) will also be discussed. Parameters will be reviewed that help size the screen for the application. The total amount of surface area to size a screen is critical to the overall success of a screen installation. Once proper style of screen is determined there is an engineering process that is required to design the screen to operate correctly in the environment it will be used. Finite Element Analysis, Dynamic Modeling, Field Vibration Analysis and other engineering tools will be reviewed to best implement a successful vibrating screen installation. TYPES OF SCREENS Multi-Slope Multi-Slope vibrating screens are used where sizing large amounts of tonnage on surface areas that would be smaller than conventional screening where roughly 6” (150mm) minus material is required to be sized. Occasionally larger particle sizes can be screened on the Multi-Slope machine but the effectiveness of the machine can be diminished with larger particle sizes and larger than 4” (100mm) screen opening. The most common and effective size range of screening with these machines is 2” (50mm) minus material. The Multi-Slope screen is used where particle size is not extremely important. Mineral processing, hard rock mining and industries where exact material size is not critical are best suited for this equipment. Because the aggregates industry requires very specific material sizes, the Multi-Slope screen is not suited for most aggregate screen applications. The key to the success of a Multi-Slope screen is proper material presentation at the feed end of the screen. This allows for the material to stratify quickly and disperse the fines through the screen quickly with a relatively thin bed depth at the feed end which allows the undersize material through the screen quickly.

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. "This paper highlights the results of collaboration between geology, mining and mineral processing teams during the restart of the North American Lithium Project, located near La Corne, Quebec, Canada. This collaboration was central in ensuring a cross discipline harmonization of design parameters and key inputs, all of which allowed for the development of an optimized life of mine plan suited to the particular needs of the operation.INTRODUCTION In July 2016, North American Lithium Inc. (NAL) began the process of restarting operations at the former Quebec Lithium Mine, located in the municipality of La Corne, Quebec, Canada. The North American Lithium Project (the Project) as it is known today, is the latest chapter in the history of this property. In order to provide a robust foundation for the project, multidisciplinary collaboration was instituted between the geology, mining and metallurgy teams. Despite the intrinsic link between these departments, in many instances their work is completed separate from one another; in silos. This collaboration highlighted specific drivers in the mining value chain that could be exploited to ensure that a saleable product could be produced effectively. This paper explores some of the concepts and strategies that were developed during the feasibility study that supported the project restart (excerpts from the study technical report have been used throughout this paper). PROJECT HISTORY In 1942, prospectors identified the presence of numerous spodumene-bearing pegmatite dykes on the Property. This led to additional interest and exploration drilling campaigns. In 1955, Quebec Lithium Corp. (QLC), who had acquired the property, began construction of an underground mine with mill facilities located on the surface. Operations began the following year at a production rate of 1,100 tonnes per day. A historical cross-section view of the underground mine is shown in Figure 1. In 1959, QLC began the construction of an on-site lithium refinery to produce lithium hydroxide. The refinery was finally operational by 1963. Mining and processing operations continued until 1966 when activities were halted due to a labour dispute. The property was sold and a few years later attempts to resume production were unsuccessful. Property ownership changed several times again until being acquired by Cambior in 1987. In the early 1990’s the existing mine and mill facilities were sold and the mine site rehabilitated"

Sheep Creek Mines Limited has developed several operating techniques that have greatly assisted in keeping unit costs at reasonable levels. Some of the techniques, as described in this paper, include organization, accounting, warehousing, bonus and contracts. INTRODUCTION THIS paper is a non-technical report on operating techniques developed by Sheep Creek Mines Limited at their Mineral King mine, located near lnvermere, B.C. Depressed metal prices and continually rising labour and materials costs have necessitated a continuous search for method to keep operating costs down. The newly developed techniques and practices have greatly assisted in maintaining unit costs. Sheep Creek Mines Limited is a mining company incorporated under the laws of the Province of British Columbia. The Company's share capital is 3,500,000 common shares, witl1 a par value of 50 cents each, of which there are 1,875 000 shares is-sued. The Company has eight di-rectors. The administration, exploration and accounting offices are located in Nelson, B.C. The Company's working capital is approximately $1,500,000.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to describe the results of a preliminary investigation of a method thought to be useful in interpreting geological structures in un-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The writer is not aware of the method having been described or investigated previously, although no thorough search of the literature has been made.The method to •be described is based on the assumption that, in argillaceous sedimentary rocks, certain ceramic properties are diagnostic for certain beds within areas of variable limits.Two ceramic properties• have been investigated: pyrometric cone equivalent (P.C.E.), and bloating characteristics of shales. The enquiry has been directed toward testing the usefulness of these properties in determining the following:A -The correlation of shale beds and, by inference, of coal seams, sandstone beds, or other such structures associated with them.B.-The location of contacts between marine and non-marine shales where lithological, palaeontological, or other evidence is lacking.Limitations of time and facilities have prevented a thorough investigation of this problem. The results given in the present paper are preliminary only. It is hoped, however, that they will occasion discussion or even lead to more thorough investigation of the method by individuals or organizations.There are, admittedly, various limitations to the proposed method. It is thought to show some promise when used in conjunction with the well-known and established methods used in stratigraphic correlation and, more particularly, when the conventional methods are not applicable."
