The coal mining industry is divided into two distinct economic segments based on Coal Supply Agreements. Coal supply agreements generally fall into two categories, spot or long-term, with the selected contract term being driven by the buyer's market expectations, security of supply considerations, fuel tonnage and quality requirements, and economics. Short-term or spot coal purchases are generally market driven and are highly competitive in today's marketplace. Long-term contracts, particularly those involving captive mines and mine-mouth power plants, are commonly driven by considerations other than economics. These other considerations, such as Reserve Conservation and Resource Recovery, Security of Supply, and Maintenance of Levelized Costs may increase the cost of coal, often needlessly and without benefit to the buyer or seller. The basic economic principles which guide the market driven metals industry and generally guide the spot coal sector of the coal industry should apply equally well to the long-term coal supply contract. The artificial constraints imposed as a result of regulated rates of return should be re-examined and in most cases, abandoned. There are many methods of surface and underground coal mining being used today such as, open-pit, contour, mountaintop, and area mining for surface mineable reserves; conventional, standard continuous and super-section continuous miners, and longwalls for deep reserves; and highwall miners, thin seam miners and augers in between. This discussion is primarily directed to surface mining, however the same principles of least cost mining on a Net Present Value basis must be considered in all cases.

Over the past 15 years, the mining industry has begun to incorporate the concepts of sustainable development and sustainable mining practice across the life cycle of mineral operations. This requires addressing economic issues, community impacts and concerns and environmental protection, and is captured in part by the phrase ‘design for sustainability’ (McClellan et al, 2009). Over the same period, the industry has seen a gradual decline in ore grades for many mineral commodities. As a result, large volumes of tailings and mine waste rock are being produced around the world, and it is expected that the annual production volumes of these materials will increase, even if there is not a significant change in the demand for materials.Another related thread of change has been the realisation that societies need to move away from linear economies (raw materials, production, consumption, disposal) towards more circular ones. This will help societies become more resource efficient, which is defined by the United Nations Environment Programme as reducing the total environmental impact of the production and consumption of goods and services, from raw material extraction to final use and disposal. The goal is to create more with less and deliver greater value with less input. Circular economies require thinking in terms of the waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle, recover, landfill).The challenge is that the waste hierarchy was originally designed to address embodied mineral content in products rather than mine waste and tailings generation. It will need to be reconsidered in a mine life cycle context, focusing on a value-based conception of waste (Van Ewijk and Stegemann, in press).In parallel to these changes, it has remained an imperative in the mining industry to dispose of these waste materials as economically as possible while protecting the environment. Single handling of these materials has been the main target, which reduces the life cycle costs of their management but may make reuse of waste and tailings technically more difficult or economically infeasible.This presentation explores a rethinking of the large volume earthen material waste issue at mines. The underlying theme is that some or all of these materials can be valuable resources for the future that can positively contribute to sustainable development. These resources can offer economic gains to firms, communities and societies; contribute to environmental well-being; enhance social interactions with the previously mined landscape if handled properly; and, with proper policies in place, reduce governance commitments. Each of these topics will be briefly explored. "Robustness can be defined as the ability of a system to resist change without adapting its initial stable configuration. Robust design methodology, which is widely accepted in the manufacturing industry, allows the establishment of robustness and reliability metrics in scenario analysis.In the mining industry, a mine can be considered as a system with design parameters such as processing plant and mining capacities. Traditionally, a limited number of scenario iterations are performed in an attempt to determine optimal capacity values. An important strategic decision such as process plant capacity in particular is made during the very early stages of a mining study, often based on a low level of information. Lack of time and tools to run and analyse a larger number of possible scenarios for different design parameter combinations are usually the main reasons for not performing a full analysis. In addition, the uncertainty of other mining study input parameters creates more risk in decision-making.With advances in technology, it is now possible to automate the process of generating several thousands of scenarios in an affordable and timely manner. This allows performing the results analysis and assessing robustness and reliability criteria within a reasonable time frame. It is possible to generate a surface of results based on the net present value (NPV) for each scenario. This surface will reflect the efficiency level of the capture of the economic rent for each production scale. In addition, each scenario can be tested under diverse conditions of volatility of other external variables such as prices, costs or recoveries for example.This paper aims to establish a methodology that applies robustness criteria to determine the best scenario on several surfaces of value, which is then assessed with real data from a mining project. Obtained results demonstrate the advantages of using the proposed methodology in dealing with the above-mentioned multidimensional problems. The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores and, for major veins, their great vertical range (>990m). Less well-documented are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine, and volcaniclastic rocks deposited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals Here precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate, and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfide and precious metal telluride-s. Wallrock alteration is quite limited adjacent to veins and somewhat more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias.

As deeper seams are continually mined, methane liberation will continue to increase and must be monitored effectively. To effectively monitor and develop appropriate control technology, methane-liberation patterns must be known. The Bureau of Mines recently completed a study to identify specific patterns of face methane liberation during long- wall mining. Both of the longwall faces surveyed had high methane liberation rates. At one longwall face, most of the methane was liberated during cutting of coal by the shearer mining machine. At the second face, a significant portion of methane was emitted from the face and floor. An effective methane-monitoring system would be different for each longwall panel because of the differences in how the gas is released along the face.

In 1971, the Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company acquired exploration rights to an unpatented claim group in the Superior (Pioneer), Arizona mining district, lying west of the Concentrator fault. This major post-mineral fault displaces the Magma vein-fault, which is mined in the Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona. The Magma vein-fault and the enclosing section of pre-mineral rocks consisting of Paleozoic and younger Precambrian sediments and diabase, is overlain by a thick section of post-mineral rocks, consisting of the Gila conglomerate, the Apache Leap dacite, and the Whitetail conglomerate. Geologic information on the thickness and attitudes of the rocks obtained from previous diamond drilling indicated that the section of post-mineral rocks might be from 3,000 to over 4,010 feet thick in the target area. (Figure 1) The Magma vein-fault is a steeply dipping vein which has produced nearly a billion dollars of copper, zinc, silver, and gold. It has been mined continuously for nearly 10,000 feet along the strike and nearly 5,000, feet vertically down the dip. It ranges from less than a foot to over 50 feet wide and contains sulfide mineralization con¬sisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and chalcocite.

"INTRODUCTION Foam, unless intentionally created, in any industrial process presents operational problems, or at a minimum, is a nuisance. Some foam problems are unique to a given industry and others are common across many industries. A few problems foam presents to any particular industry are: (a) Poor Housekeeping, (b) Environmental impact, (c) Safety Hazards, (d) Slower Production Rates and, (e) Reduced quality of the end product. Defoamers address these issues. Sadly, the assumption in most industries is all defoamers are alike. In reality, a lot of chemistry is involved in the manufacture of even the simplest defoamer sold today and rarely are any two defoamers “just alike”. Today’s defoamers can include polymer chemistry, fatty esters, alkoxylated alcohols, silicone chemistry, silicone surfactants, ethoxylated and propoxylated block polymers, and a tremendous amount of emulsion chemistry just to name a few. This paper will discuss the various types of defoamers, defoaming mechanisms, the advantages and disadvantages of defoamer selections, and how to choose the proper defoamer for your application. Before a discussion of defoamer can be brought about, foam generation and composition must be discussed. WHAT IS FOAM? Foam is a colloidal suspension of a gas dispersed in a liquid. Most often foam consists of air dispersed in water. If a stream of air is introduced into a liquid, the bubbles produced assume a spherical shape. As the density of the bubble is less than the liquid the bubble rises. When the individual bubbles reach and pass through a surfactant free liquid they collapse. Air from the bubble dissipates and the liquid previously surrounding the bubble flows back.It should be noted a pure liquid will not foam. In the case of air dispersed in water a surfactant is necessary to make the water support a stable foam. A surfactant is a term used to describe a surface active agent; a compound with a hydrophilic end and a hydrophobic end on the same molecule."

Can international development NGOs and the mining industry find common ground and work together in the Third World? The Canadian Hunger Foundation/PARTNERS in Rural Development (CHF-PARTNERS) has, over the past forty years, implemented more than 800 rural community development projects in some 38 countries of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Working with or for the Canadian mining industry offers both opportunities and risks. We can help a mining company ensure that the workers, their families and communities share adequately in the economic and social rewards from a mining operation in their area. We can contribute to the provision of sustainable livelihoods when an operation winds down. The company?s reputation as a good corporate citizen can be enhanced. On the other hand, mining companies and NGOs have generally very different values and missions. The risk of misunderstandings from conflicting motives and work practices is correspondingly high. Both partners must state their values and expectations clearly at the start of collaboration. The NGO must ensure that the company abides by acceptable ethical standards. It must not directly or indirectly subsidize a private company from its charitable donations. The mining company must satisfy itself that the NGO has the capacity, resources and experience to produce the results expected.

Conventional round tank thickeners have been widely used in the mining industry for many years. The mining industry was well satisfied with the ability of conventional thickeners to improve minerals beneficiation operations. However, development of improved flocculants (the polyacrylamides) made possible much more rapid settling rates, since polyacrylamides produce large flocs rapidly (unlike starch or inorganics). Traditionally considered to be a slow operation if maximum underflow density was achieved, and therefore there was some justification for the expense. Thickeners required large volumes to permit sufficient time for settling. The oversize not considered a drawback but the initial capital cost was. In high rate thickeners, a bed of thickened material is allowed to build around the feedwell, even above the bottom of the feedwell. The slurry is fed directly into the bed at a velocity that allows the material to be evenly dispersed over the thickener area This more efficient use of settling area allows a higher solids throughput per unit surface area (rise rate). In this paper, high rate thickener rise rates and polymer consumption are compared.

"INTRODUCTION Mining is a fundamental part of the historical and economic development of a country. In Colombia, this is reflected from pre-Columbian jewelery, to being now one of the first exporters of coal worldwide, in 2017, the Colombian mining sector contributed approximately 6% of GDP (Ministerio de Minas y Energía, 2017). Coal, nickel, gold, platinum, emeralds, limestone, salt, phosphate rock, clays, siliceous sands and to a lesser extent copper, manganese, magnesite, barite, gypsum and various types of ornamental rocks, among others are produced (UPME, 2016). The contributions of mining activity in the economic dimension is more measurable, on the contrary in other dimensions, as the social and environmental, for this, every day there are new proposals and tools oriented to strengthen how to evaluate the contributions in terms of the sustainability and responsibility, with the aim of quantifying, concreting and non-utopian, to improve the life quality of a community and not only to comply with reporting and gaining prestige. Colombia has a generalized increase in the mining sector where the levels of informality and illegality are evident only 10% of mining activity is legal (UPME, 2014), also, the mining sector is accused of human rights violations, high levels of inequality, poverty and the affectation of ecosystems due to bad environmental management, among other situations (ACNUDH Colombia, 2015). This problem has generated rejection to the realization of the mining activity in many places of Colombia. At this point, it is important to clarify this problem is more complex, different actors are involved in this conflict, but it is an evidence that is needed a sustainability model for specific realities such as the Colombian mining. This situation in the current mining activity, is similar to the chemical industry situation three decades ago, because of an extensive problem in relation to repeated work accidents, natural disasters and indications as a highly polluting and unsustainable industry, with the aim of improving, not only this public perception, but also in the way of carrying out the business activity. Thus, in 1985, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association released the Responsible Care Program (RCP) (ICCA, 2015). Being aware that companies were responsible for the affected lives in some way by the operation and needed to improve workers safety, environmental protection and most importantly how legal persons should comply with the law, but go beyond this. RCP is most recognized sustainability initiative in the chemical sector, companies associated are recognized for having high quality standards, continuous improvement, visibility, corporate ethics, environmental and social management (ACC, 2015). In addition, to meeting the objectives is set out the creation of a model that increasing reputational sector levels. This initiative is considered to be a worldwide successful case of reporting corporate responsibility indicators and contributions to sustainability from the industry sector to local development (BASF Group, 2016)."

THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining. At the start of World War I1 the demand for iron ore to supply Woodward blast furnaces, and rapid exhaustion of the main source of Wood- ward ore, No. 3 Red Ore mine, necessitated speedy opening of the Pyne mine. The mine is three miles southwest of Bessemer and is responsible for 80 pct of Woodward ore, the rest coming from the Songo mine. The Woodward Iron Co. is one of the old producers of the Birmingham district. S. H. Woodward, an iron-master of Wheeling, overheard two Union soldiers conversing about ore and coal lands in Alabama, which lead to the acquisition of the first ore lands of the Woodward Co. in 1869. Development was not begun until after the death of S. H. Woodward; his two sons, W. H. Woodward and J. H. Woodward, formed the Woodward Iron Co. in 1881 and purchased a tract of land midway between the ore vein on the southeast and the coal field on the northeast about 12 miles southeast of Birmingham for the

Diminishing returns in management's fight to lower manufacturing expenses have added luster to savings that can be achieved in delivered costs through creative management of the distribution function. This is especially true for companies engaged in the production of bulk commodities, for which transport costs may represent 25 to 50% or more of total delivered price, A. E. Cascino, vice president of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, recently gave an example of why top management in his firm is concerned with distribution: "The price of a ton of phosphate rock, f.o.b. mine, is about $7. The cost of warehousing, freight, and handling frequently totals an additional $11 . . . . If one of our competitors . . . discovers a way in which he can cut his distribution costs by $3, we're dead! Even if we wanted to offset our competitor's more efficient means of shipping with reduced f.o.b. price for our product-we don't have that much profit margin . . . ." In a special report on the revolution now occurring in transportation of goods, Business Week stated in its September 24 issue: "Moving and storing goods on their way from mine and mill through various sub-assemblies to their final markets costs anywhere from $50 billion to $75 billion a year- $100 billion if paperwork costs are included.

"The thiosulfate leaching process developed by Barrick to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing gold ores uses calcium thiosulfate as the leaching reagent for ores pre-treated by pressure oxidation, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a means of reagent recovery. A large portion of the research that led to the development of the technology was based on previous studies completed by different groups over the years, mainly focused on the ammonium thiosulfate system. Operational limitations in the use of the ammonia-containing recycled water in the pressure oxidation circuit were some of the main drivers for the change from ammonium to calcium thiosulfate for the development of the industrial scale process. One of the main aspects for successful gold extraction and recovery in the thiosulfate system is the pseudo-equilibrium reactions that drive distribution of the different gold species (in solids, solution and on resin) in the system. Previous studies have been focused on the thiosulfate reactions and equilibrium constants for the oxysulfur ions (thiosulfate, trithionate, tetrathionate). However, the literature around the effects of the different metal-oxysulfur complexes (Cu and Hg complexes) that form when the ore is in contact with the leaching reagents, and the related effects on stability of the gold complex is limited. The main changes in the gold complex chemistry and stability in the calcium thiosulfate system as compared to the ammonium and sodium equivalents, as well as related effects on gold recoveries, were investigated in the presence of different types of double refractory ores. INTRODUCTION Barrick has developed a thiosulfate leaching process to treat double refractory gold ores, by combining the use of acidic and alkaline autoclave pre-treatment with thiosulfate resin-in-leach (RIL). The process currently in operation at the Goldstrike mine (the TCM process), uses calcium thiosulfate as the leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recycle. The main feed to the process plant is highly preg-robbing sulfidic ore from Goldstrike’s open pit. Prior to feeding the pressure oxidation circuit, the ore is processed through the crushing and grinding circuits and treated in preparation for acid or alkaline autoclave processing (POX)."

Microcomputer analysis has long been a technique for engineering professionals to improve the theoretical and practical design of continuous mining systems. Such work has been typically composed of modeling observed events and then introducing a variety of known elements with predicted results to compare against the results of the model. Programs written in BASIC, Cobol, Fortran, or other language dominated such efforts. These programs have taken years to develop and prove out. This paper explores a new management tool used at TMC on a daily basis to track and improve continuous mining systems through the use of microcomputers and Lotus 1-2-3 software. By analyzing data provided by section foreman, shift foreman, and maintenance personnel against predetermined goals, new production targets are developed, weaknesses in the current mining systems are identified, and the results of changes are measured. The results of this system on the productive output of TMC systems are on the order of ten percent improvement.

It is sometimes said that "mines are made, and not found". I rather doubt that the exploration geologist would be overly sympathetic to that statement, and, of course, like most one-liners it is only partly true. As an explorationist who has been involved in building his own company over the last ten years, and by necessity has become a financier, I can appreciate what real grains of truth are in that statement, however. Because technical people are seldom taught financing in their basic training, and because they are usually not involved in it until at quite a senior level in their careers, the whole field often acquires a certain mystique. The engineering professions have too often believed financing is the province of the accountant or financial executive and just as we in the technical world are often too quick to bristle if the latter try to tread on our domain, the opposite can just as easily be true. Unfortunately, this is another example of a compartmentalized individual, and that is one thing the successful financier cannot be.

To beat capital costs of US$10 per pound of installed capacity has appeared as a major hurdle for the "third generation laterite nickel plants. Forecast costs are escalating. Where can savings come from? Ore beneficiation can reduce the tonnage rate to be processed. High pressure acid leach options include the use of indirect slurry heating and higher operating temperatures to reduce flow rates and residence time. Progress has been reported in atmospheric leaching. High counter current decantation circuit settling rates and high underflow densities reduce CCD costs. Metal recovery options include direct from leach solution to metal production, as used by Bulong and espoused by Goro, and indirect recovery as used by Moa Bay, Murrin Murrin and Cawse. Plant location impacts on the costs of tailings disposal, power and energy costs, supply of consumables and labour costs, among others. Final nickel and cobalt metal production routes are electrowinning, hydrogen reduction or some innovative routes being proposed for Goro. It is difficult to analyse the economics without an integrated view of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information with sufficient detail to analyse and act is a problem. However, to take action requires real time information from manufacturing assets, corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. Validation methods use process models to identify inconsistent information in the case of corrupt actionable information. This paper presents new strategies that transform the data into business information for continuous improvement and optimization. This technical presentation will review recent implementations enabling large metallurgical complexes to improve their data quality for overall production and energy management. A competence center emerges as an enabler for implementing operational intelligence. The evolution of Web services to troubleshoot plant information and to collaborate at the enterprise level is presented.

The Outokumpu Flash Smelting process today is the most feasible method for copper matte smelting. The economic feasibility of the process has always been one of the main decision making criteria in smelter projects. Thus, today about 50 % of the world primary copper production utilizes Outokumpu Flash Smelting Technology. However, in the future, environmental criteria will have stronger and stronger impact on decision making. Flash Smelting technology offers the best pollution control features of any process. today. It is foreseen that, in the near future, the global trend will be that all the smelters must decrease their emissions at an accelerating rate, compelling the smelters to make increasingly larger investments on environmental protection. In most of smelters ?today, Peirce-Smith converting and transfer of the molten material in ladles are the number one pollution source. The key today for copper converting and minimizing emissions is the Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting process, which has proven to be the most effective converting method in terms of pollution control and, production efficiency including capital and operational costs. Outokumpu Flash Smelting technology is applicable also for small to medium scale smelters but the most interesting area is the upper capacity limit for smelting in one line, which has not yet been reached. We predict that by the year 2000 to 2005, there will be at least one smelter which produces 500,000 tonnes of Cu per year based on one Flash Smelting and Flash. Converting unit. The current state-of-the-art of the Outokumpu Flash Smelting - Flash Converting process is presented in this paper as well as some new options for copper production to be utilized in the near future but which are available already today.

Because of air pollution control regulations in the early 701s it became necessary to clean effluent gases from the Morenci Reduction Works Smelter. Feasibility studies indicated that this could be accomplished most efficiently by using the smelter gaseous effluent to feed a sulfuric acid plant. Complying with air pollution control regulations thus created the need to dispose of relatively large amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid. Typical Morenci ores contain substantial amounts of oxidized copper minerals which are not recoverable by flotation. In addition, there is low sulfide, high oxide material which can be leached, but is not suitable for flotation concentration. Early in 1971 sufficent data had been accumulated to show that a leaching plant for the Morenci tailings could use a large portion of the sulfuric acid produced by the Smelter. It was determined that for all practical purposes leaching of the available copper was complete in two hours or less. Capital expenditures could not be justified for more than two stages of counter current decantation for recovery of the leached copper, and the plant was designed with these criteria in mind.

"Most geologists and mining engineers, in the course of their professional careers, frequently become involved with the appraisal of metalliferous mineral deposits and develop a familiarity with and standard approach to the evaluation of these deposits. When the same individuals approach the industrial mineral field, however, their usual approach pattern can be rudely disturbed.This paper highlights the difference in appraisal approach and outlines the factors common to both but which have entirely different emphasis. These comprise geological appraisal, analytical requirements, the importance of transportation, marketing requirements and standards, including appropriate allowances for product development, and marketing penetration.Out of these ""different"" considerations, however, a pat-tern or standard approach emerges which is as common to the industrial mineral field as that used either consciously or subconsciously in the metallic field.The paper reviews the different factors and points of emphasis and offers an outline of the common pattern of appraisal for industrial minerals."
