Over the 40 years that the author has been engaged in the Australian underground coal mining industry, there has been a continuous improvement in safety performance as the sector has grown in size and productivity. The underground environment hosts many hazards with significant risk profiles that are kept in check by effective health and safety management systems that have evolved largely following major underground disasters. Observations are made on the changes observed for specific aspects of the underground coal sector, with particular reference to ventilation issues, and predications are made as to the needs of the future.CITATION:Robertson, B, 2013. A novel pressure leaching process for platinum group metal (PGM) feedstocks is described. The process is particularly well suited for treatment of ores or concentrates that are too low grade for economic processing by the conventional smelting/leaching process. Operating conditions have been identified under which gold, the PGM's and the base metals dissolve simultaneously in a pressure leaching autoclave. The product of this leaching process can then be treated by one of several flowsheets, of which the preferred will likely involve solid/liquid separation, followed by precipitation (or adsorption on activated carbon) of gold and the PGM's, followed by copper solvent extraction/electrowinning. Depending on the concentrations of nickel and cobalt, the copper raffinate would either be partially recycled to the autoclave to allow NilCo concentrations to build up, or it would proceed directly to a Ni/Co refinery. OUTOKUMPU, a large copper mine in eastern Finland, has the distinction of being one of the few important mines in the world discovered by a geologist the late Otto Triistedt, of the Geological Sur- vey of Finland, having found the out- clop in 1910 by tracing glacial ore boulders, some of which had been carried as far as fifty kilometres. As the mine had no connection with either railways or waterways and the possibilities of transport were poor, the owners first tried the Hybinette hydrometallurgical process to extract the copper. The raw ore was finely crushed, treated by a sulphatizing roast. and then leached. The resulting solution was electrolyzed, using lead anodes. This experimental plant, having a capacity of 10,000 tons (all Ions are metric tons in this paper) of raw ore and producing 300 to LEO0 tons of electrolytic copper annually, was built in 1913 and run until dis-

"IntroductionDuring my more than 40 years in the practice of underground construction and engineering, the industry has seen progress from the dig down to rock or hardpan or alternatively drive concrete or steel into the ground and count the blows; then you can be sure of you have a solid foundation; to the modern day, I’m willing to try anything to save money. Of course these are both exaggerations, but not gross ones. After getting bored being supervision on jobs counting blows, I struck out into the new field of “tie-backs” as they were called in the United States, or “ground anchors” as they were then termed in the United Kingdom. After installing some of the first permanent ground anchors for the Corps of Engineers on Lake Michigan as well as the highest loaded rock anchors of the time at two dams on the Ohio River, we were at the top of our game in the 1970’s. Subsequently in the 1980’s when my view of the future of ground anchors saw their installation becoming a commodity item, we branched out into “Pin Piles” now known as Micro Piles, high capacity, steel tube encased, small diameter (5-12” or so), high capacity (100-500 tons) piling. Next came soil nailing, both temporary and permanent retaining walls, as at Cumberland Gap Kentucky. My next morph was into “Cement Deep Soil Mixing” earlier on, known simply as “soil mixing”. For this education I traveled to Japan several times and established a long-term, Joint Venture, relationship with one of the better known Japanese specialty ground modification companies. In Boston at the “Big Dig” we established the then record size soil mixing project, 500,000 or so cubic meters of CDSM concluding in the year 2000. Since then I’ve been involved as a consultant mainly for dams and levees. Below is the story of how I came to be at this place in the road to innovation in Geotechnical processes."

FEDERAL Bureau of Mines. - The Bureau of Mines does not make assays or analyses for individuals or firms unless the samples are part of the ore-testing and ore-dressing investigations of the Metallurgical Division on representative ores from mining districts and of possible benefit to the entire mineral industry through published reports. All significant results obtained in this way are made public. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be examined.

Danieli entered into the Direct Reduction (DR) field in order to offer its clients complete turnkey facilities for steelmaking?from processing of raw materials through finished products. The Danarex® Process produces a passivated product, called the Supermetallic (SPM), without hot-briquetting. One of the main features of the Danarex® Process is its ability to produce approximately 50% of the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) through reduction gas generated in a reformer and another 50% through recycling preheated furnace exit gas. Some other distinguishing features are: separation of carburising and cooling zones and the use of double bustle for better distribution of gas inside the shaft furnace. A pilot plant was set up at Hazen Research, Inc., Golden, CO in order to show that the integrated process works as expected and to obtain process data. The SPM obtained was of a very high quality, evidenced by metallization levels of 92% to 98%. The carbon content could be controlled between 1.5% to 4.0% by varying the operating conditions and approximately 75% of this carbon was present as Fe3C. The product was tested for inertness by Chilworth Technology, England, using UN standard tests and was found to be safe for outdoor storage and transportation.

There are many influences which have a bearing on the economics of industrial minerals production. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly three factors which have economic significance in the production of these mineral commodities. The three items of discussion include 1) the nature and relative value of the industrial minerals group, 2) project planning, and 3) market analyses. General aspects of these factors are familiar to most of us. However, an attempt will be made to give some current details regarding each. Also, in reality, project planning and market studies are usually so closely associated that they will be discussed jointly, rather than separately. This will be done by way of examples which show how these two activities actually evolved for two industrial minerals projects.

The demand or consumption of fluorspar has been somewhat taken for granted in recent years, except for the specific interest of those that produce, market, and/or consume the commodity. A tradition was established of thinking that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today than in the past. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The Bureau of Mines recently published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources that created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The United States and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. The goals for the U.S. Government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. This paper reviews the recent past of fluorspar and helps set the stage for a more detailed assessment of this critical commodity.

Drawing from the experience of nickel, copper, aluminum and mineral borates, this paper illustrates the business value that the mining, minerals and metals industry as a whole can gain from applying life cycle assessment (LCA) to products and operations. Through the use of case studies, the paper explores how companies and industry associations have used LCA to their advantage: from evaluating capital investments, meeting customer information needs, supporting new product applications, and developing credible marketing information on the environmental performance of their products. It also explores the dynamics of LCA adoption and integration within companies, and provides recommendations to further strengthen institutionalization of LCA.

A great variety of substance that differ widely in chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties are loosely linked under the generic term "clay", but for the average man all that matters is whether a given material can be sold or used profitably. So-called "clays" range in texture from true clays and allied minerals that are typically "fat" or sticky to fine sand. Sand and other strictly silicious materials, such as tripoli and diatomite, are not clays in any sense; but many commercial clays are strictly loams, for they are intermediate in texture and always contain a mixture of minerals, though the term "loam" has little commercial usage except in foundry work. Even pure kaolinite, ordinarily considered the typical "clay substance", recently was found to exist as three distinct minerals; and each of these, in turn, exhibits variations in particle size and other physical attributes. Probing with the X-ray and employing other modern tools and techniques, scientists are tracing the patterns of molecules and finding chemical and physical phenomena that seem to disclose the causes for the markedly different behavior of the various aluminum silicates with varying proportions of combined and adsorbed water that are the essential ingredients of commercial clays; but rule-of-thumb definitions and enforced reliance upon empirical tests of actual samples still hold sway. In addition to the hydrated simple silicates of aluminum, almost all clays contain quartz, feldspar, and mica with varying amounts of organic matter and, in addition, other impurities - such as iron, manganese, and titanium oxides - that may discolor them sufficiently to render them unfit for certain important uses. The white clays are generally the purest, but no two clays are really alike, and great care must be exercised to maintain a reasonable uniformity in successive shipments even from the same deposit.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) find wide range of applications from portable electronics to electric cars and stationary storage or renewable energy. LIB electrode fabrication is done through mixing the active material (Li-ion host) with carbon (conductive component) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which acts as a binder. These components are dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to form a paste which is then doctor bladed onto the aluminum current collector. NMP is a toxic chemical and the overall fabrication process remains costly. Efforts are made of eliminating NMP by (1) replacing the binder and (2) using a new fabrication method. Of particular interest among these new methods is electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Via the application of DC potential, particles in suspension can be electrophoretically deposited on different conductive substrates in a relatively fast rate rendering EPD feasible for industrial application. A key aspect for successful application of EPD is the formulation of a stable suspension. Within the McGill HydroMET group, we explore the potential of EPD in fabricating LIB electrodes having demonstrated its effectiveness in the case of P25 nanotitania/carbon anodes. The performance of EPD fabricated TiO2/C electrodes is compared to standard PVDF-based electrodes and shown to have comparable charge capacity. This method is now being extended to other electrode materials. In this paper an introduction to the EPD method will be made and subsequently its use in fabricating LIB electrodes will be described. The performance of the fabricated batteries is evaluated via galvanostatic charging/discharging and cycling tests.

In 1960, Magnetics International Ltd. undertook the development of the Jones High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separator in the Americas. Magnetics International had a number of possible applications in its own projects plus the intention of developing the equipment for sale to others. It was soon recognized that no matter how innovative a piece of mineral separation equipment may be, it takes many years and much finance before it is finally accepted for large scale use. For this reason, many good ideas die in their infancy. One of the chief reasons for such a time lag between conception and large scale implementation is the usual lack of finance to construct and put into operation a large demonstration unit. Even with a large unit for demonstration, the first major user usually requires a guarantee that is not normal in accepted separation equipment. Such problems are also normally accompanied by major design changes from the first conception.

Cominco Snip is a 60: 40 joint venture of Cominco Ltd. and Prime Resources Group Inc. Cominco manages the operation. The mine site is located in a narrow mountain valley where Bronson Creek enters the Iskut River in Northwestern British Columbia. Access is by air only to the company's 1,500 meter airstrip. Milling at a designed feed rate of 300 tpd began on schedule in January 1991. Tonnage and gold production in the form of bullion bars from the gravity circuit and gold bearing float concentrate have exceeded design forecast. This presentation will examine many of the factors that influenced the final plant design inclusive of exploration findings, bench scale and pilot plant test results, environmental and social considerations, capital and projected operating costs and product transportation alternatives such as the operation's Hovercraft.

It is imperative to be proactive in correctly identifying all stakeholders and initiating early contact. This builds trust relationships, which are essential to ensure future decision-making processes are streamlined.Often neglected is a company’s obligation to select the correct team to represent its values and mission. The company requires representation that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to its operations and people, the safety and health of the community and environment, and most importantly, represents the decision makers. Stakeholders need to believe that the engagement process is genuine and that the company representatives are aligned towards targeted outcomes that will benefit all stakeholders in some way.Among others, stakeholders include shareholders, staff, families, community, service and supply providers, regulators, land managers and the political/financial framework. Depending upon the mineral product, stakeholders may include ports, international offtake clients and those along the route. New stakeholders continually evolve during mine life, and the engagement process requires an investor–community–public relations (IR/CR/PR) team to anticipate change and actively scan perception and chatter.Successful communication is more than delivering a message; it is about engaging stakeholders and confirming the feedback loop to ensure the correct message is communicated and the relationship is strengthened.The nature of the mining company’s branding and the public’s perception of company intentions will dictate whether there is willingness to allow the company to follow its desired path. This in turn controls the company’s most scarce resource – time. "INTRODUCTION Canister-type gas masks have become an essential part of the equipment of many industries, not only for use in emergencies, but also in performing normal operations of industrial processes and procedures, particularly where ventilation is not practically or economically feasible. They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres.Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices, and this bureau has become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investi-gations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.TYPES OF CANISTERS EXAMINEDThis investigation included tests of the following types of canisters:(a) Gas-mask canister filled with 725 c.c. of granular activated charcoal, 8 to 14 mesh, and of a quality used in gas masks which meet the Bureau of Mines approval requirements 4 for protection against organic vapors."

The South African mining industry first experienced en-masse use of electronic detonators in the Narrow Reef environment using AELÆs ElectrodetÖ pre-set delay system. In recent years, programmable systems such as AELÆs SmartdetÖ have also established their position, and within both AEL and the mines there has been important learning around the strengths and weaknesses of these systems. In general, the fixed delay systems tend to be more easily appreciated by less-skilled work teams, and are very well suited to simple layouts, especially long, narrow blasts. However, development of programmable row controllers and series delay inserts has greatly expanded the field of usefulness of these systems while retaining most of the simplicity of use. The programmable systems are immensely flexible and therefore able to function under any condition, but require a higher level of discipline and knowledge. Much has been done to address this issue and make the systems user friendly, so the systems have converged to some extent. These systems are both valuable tools for achieving control over blasting in underground and surface applications. The choice of system is very dependent on the prevailing conditions. Accurate timing with electronic enhancements continues to show an increasing range of benefits to mining operations. There is a strong parallel with non electronic initiation systems which helps to understand the appropriate use of the systems.

"As the cost in time and money of data from sensors and small-scale tests has reduced, additional challenges have arisen. Although many mine data sets are not big relative to those in other disciplines, they are complex in other ways, and becoming too large to manage efficiently on personal computers. In order to take advantage of the opportunity offered by increased data, a diverse team from Universidad de Chile and CSIRO Mineral Resources has developed a virtual geometallurgical laboratory to support the computational requirements linking data acquisition with data-driven business decisions. A particular focus to date has been the development of user-guided workflow ensembles to enable comparison between plausible geometallurgical hypotheses.A case study has been undertaken using publicly available data from the Rocklea Dome iron deposit in Western Australia. A hypothetical mining schedule was produced from geochemical and hyperspectral drill core/chips data via the following steps: data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, geochemical interpolation, block modelling, ultimate open pit design and scheduling. The key outcome of this study was the integration of workflow stages through new plug-in methods or modification of existing software. Introduction Throughout the Great Plains region (the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta), numerous clay deposits of widely varying composition and character are to be found. These may be classified into two general types: (1) surface clays, and (2) shales. The surface clays consist of a heterogeneous mantle of silts and clays interspersed with grave! and sand deposits, and may belong to any of the following groups: (1) lake clays: (2) river-terrace or flood-plain deposits; (3) delta deposits . In most cases, the water from which these deposits were ' laid down was derived from the melting ice of the continental glaciers. These surface clays, in general, possess certain characteristics in common, being all more or less calcareous, often silty, and showing a tendency to 'check' in air-drying. The shales found in this region are of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. These deposits have a wide extent, but there is frequently such a heavy covering of drift material that the clays are accessible chiefly along the walls of stream valleys, or along the escarpments of uplands.

"The mining industry is often challenged with the task of evaluating narrow vein open pit deposits. A realistic mineable solution from optimisation needs to accurately represent mining dilution and the practical limitations of mining equipment. Open pit dilution is driven according to mining method and fleet selection as this dictates the ‘selective mining unit’ (SMU) that can be practicably mined.Common evaluation methods represent dilution by:a mathematical dilution assumption addition of a dilution skin reblocking of the model to an appropriate SMU.This paper will explore an alternative method of applying dilution by adapting an underground stope modelling tool. By considering an SMU as a stope, automatic stope shape creators such as Datamine’s Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) can be used to create wireframes for each mining unit over the entire deposit. Using these wireframes, the model can be subblocked and assigned as either ore (inside the wireframe) or waste (outside the wireframe) prior to optimisation.The MSO process considers SMU geometry and a depth specific value-based cut-off. The result is an optimised solution for the deposit based on practical and achievable mining constraints rather than one based on generalised modifying factors.To evaluate the economic impact of the methods above, results have been costed and scheduled and a comparison of operating cash flows made.Citation:Swapp, S and Mann, C, 2016.
