Indications are that underground mining is gaining favour with large and small mining companies due to environmental and sustainability concerns. Dramatic changes to mine fill technologies will be needed in order to keep pace with these emerging trends. The industry will be compelled to gravitate toward zero discharge mining operations. Innovative handling of mine tailings will become a focal point in this effort. The challenges are to use a greater portion of the residues and to manufacture a fill with better properties. This is a tall order that can only be addressed through a systematic research and implementation process involving mining companies, universities, research organizations, manufacturers and governments. The mining industry has to be at the forefront of this technology push in mine fills for the future mines. It will also be called upon to lead the way in other research areas. The industry will have to partner with other technology providers: universities, government laboratories and consultants.

THE dire effects of rapidly vanishing natural resources, widespread unemployment, and increased debt and taxation in recent years have challenged Canadians to produce a practical solution to these national economic problems. In more recent months, wars and rumours of war have indicated, among other things, the need for better control of our mineral wealth. The erection of a smelter on the lower mainland coast of British Columbia, treating all Western ores, and such ores as it will be found advisable to import, will make an important contribution toward a solution of these problems. It is believed that the ores tributary justify a smelter of major proportions. A stock-taking to confirm this can be made with reason-able accuracy in a short time, and this should be undertaken without delay. Enough general information is, however, available .in this paper to justify the technicians of the Department of Mines at Ottawa and of interested smelting companies making a preliminary study of the matter. THE DEFENCE ARGUMENT As a factor in rearmament, metals play a vital part. That rearmament is to continue on an increasing scale is indicated in Premier Chamberlain's address of October 3rd last, when he said: ?'For a long period now we have been engaged in this country in a great programme of rearmament which is daily increasing in pace and volume. let no one think because we have signed 'this agreement between the four powers at Munich we can afford to relax our efforts or call a halt in our armaments at this moment'. As matters stand, the facilities in British Columbia are entirely out of line with the strategic importance of this Province as the Western Front of Canada and the Empire. All our copper ores, and an appreciable part of our lead and zinc ores, are sent for treatment to Japan, United States, and Europe, while we import our iron and alloys. A treatment plant on this Coast would not only give us control of war metals and chemicals but it would provide an increased industrial and research population, badly needed in this area and of the greatest value in the case of war. This is where the mining industry can do its bit.

The total pressure oxidation of copper concentrates is a potentially viable option for treating copper concentrates that are either low grade or contain significant impurities. Both concentrate types are heavily penalized in smelter contracts. The total pressure oxidation process involves autoclaving the copper concentrate at temperatures of 200-220 C under oxygen pressure. The autoclave discharge can be separated into a solid (oxidation residue) and a liquid (oxidation solution) product. The oxidation solution can be treated for copper recovery by solvent extraction - electrowinning or by direct electrowinning. The direct electrowinning recovery of copper requires prior removal of selenium and tellurium by cementation on finely divided scrap copper. The oxidation residue is washed thoroughly to remove acid and dissolved copper prior to precious metals recovery by conventional cyanidation in the presence of lime. The results of a benchscale investigation involving a number of copper concentrates are reported. Copper recoveries in autoclave oxidation and gold recoveries by cyanidation of the oxidation residue exceeded 99%. The results of benchscale experiments to demonstrate copper recovery are described. Various flowsheet options are presented.

"The computer methods used by the French Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique, which are applicable to any type of ore deposits, are:(i) Ore reserve estimation. The data are either the core analyses or gamma leggings. To determine the spatial distribution of the ore, three different methods of interpolation are used. Two of these are based on the least-squares theory and the third one is an application of the regionalized variable theory. The interpretations of the orebody by the geologists are introduced in the computer program as often as possible.(ii) Optimal open pit design. From the spatial distribution of ore, the three-dimensional outlines of the optimal pit are determined by a geometrical algorithm which allows different slopes varying with the azimuth.Finally, the optimization of annual successive plans arc discussed."

Plant process optimization programs are often costly, both in technical effort and loss of production. Evolutionary Operation or "EVOP" is a mode of plant operation consisting of controlled cyclical changes in process conditions by which information is provided concerning potential process improvements while both volume and quality uniformity in production are maintained. Its conceptual simplicity and low cost of utilization have led to successful adoption in a variety of industrial manufacturing operations. This paper is an expository account of basic EVOP theory, the problems encountered and the organization required in applying it to a processing plant. Illustrations are provided which indicate the payoff that can result.

Donna Summer wrote and recorded a song in 1983 with Michael Omartian called, “She Works Hard for the Money.” The song was inspired by her encounter with an exhausted rest room attendant, Onetta Johnson, who is mentioned in the song by name, and featured on the album’s back cover. ISEE President James Daley, in the May/June 2019 in The Journal of Explosives Engineering discussed the Six Pillars related to the ISEE. We will use the Internal Processes pillar to frame this discussion. The Internal Process Pillar includes five separate sub-committees – we will see how this concept applies to both ATF Explosives record-keeping compliance and business process compliance in general. We will discuss electronic and paper record keeping, what works and what doesn’t. We’ll review record keeping in light of those five sub-committees: Audit, Awards, Constitution, Ethics and Planning. You’ll come away with concrete steps you can use to improve your record keeping processes. This paper will show you how to make the hard work of inventory management and ATF record keeping work hard for you.

Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.

In February of 1989 the Mission Complex of ASARCO Incorporated completed an expansion of its concentrator, raising the base mining rate from 25,900 TPO (28,500 STPD) to 37,200 TPO (41,000 STPD). The expansion was accomplished by extending the twelve existing Mission ball mills in length, by installing the grinding circuit from Asarco's idled Sacaton Concentrator along with various auxiliary equipment, and by modifications to the flotation circuit and water systems. This paper will give a brief history of the consolidation of the ore body which made the expansion possible and explain the various parts of the expansion.

One of the most frequently asked quesitons is: "Where is copper (price and usage) going?" I will not attempt to forecast either the future price of copper or the future growth of the copper industry; rather I would like to discuss the current trends experienced in the smelting and refining terms and conditions for sales and/or purchases of copper concentrates. A brief review of contract language and terms, together with a review of the common jargon, I believe, would be helpful. To accomplish this review, I will first list what I consider the four basic parts or sections of a basic ore contract and then illustrate basic terms with calculations.

Over the last six years Mandalay Resources has increased production rates and improved safety outcomes at its Costerfield mine in Victoria, Australia. This mine is an underground operation utilising narrow mining techniques to extract vertical veins, and produces up to 80 000 equivalent ounces of gold per annum, in both gold and antimony value.The operational challenges of narrow vein mining include controlling overbreak when veins being mined are only 300 mm wide. The mine has developed methods and modified equipment to suit extraction of these veins. Productivity improvements over the period have involved development of a stoping method and equipment to suit 1.8 m wide development drives. Over the last five years and during a skills shortage, recruitment, training and retention of personnel has been key to keeping corporate knowledge and skills to execute a careful efficient mining technique to minimise overbreak.Managing an underground operation close to nearby residents has unique challenges. Historically Victorian residents had family members work as underground miners; however, in the current day with few underground operations in this jurisdiction, community knowledge of mining has decreased. The Costerfield Operations are only 100 m from the nearest residence and the company values community engagement, partnership and investment with local Heathcote organisations.The mine has invested substantially in executive coaching of its leadership team early, which has paid dividends in problem solving potential of that team and ensuring the operation delivers on its promises to all stakeholders. The operation has become safer and employees are now more aware of their individual contribution in producing safe, efficient gold and antimony that benefit the whole operation, community and the region.CITATION:McCarthy, M, 2016. Recycling of hydrochloric acid from the pickling of mild steel using pyrohydrolysis is a state-of-the-art technology. Recent developments have focused on the production of a high value iron oxide by-product, where the chemical purity and physical properties are the main issues. New processing routes, especially for TiO2 and Ni production, use leaching operations with hydrochloric acid. The feasibility of those processes depends on the availability of an economic and reliable process for the recovery of the acid. Depending on the level and type of impurities and the required specification of the by-product, pyrohydrolysis in a fluid bed or in a spray roast reactor can be the ideal solution. In stainless steel annealing and pickling lines, a mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids is used to remove the scale from the surface after heat treatment. Nitrate emissions from the pickling and the rinsing processes have to be avoided because of more stringent environmental regulations. An annealing and pickling line that is totally wastewater-free was developed, where not only the nitric/hydrofluoric acid but also the rinse water, is completely recycled. New developments to increase the HNO3-recovery rate and to obtain a metal oxide by-product that is easier to recycle are presented.

Laboratory experiments have been performed to evaluate the kinetics of roasting pyrite and arsenopyrite in air at elevated temperatures, in the presence of lime. The effects of temperature, time, air flow rate, particle size, lime type, and mineral/lime weight ratio on the rates of oxidation, lime sulfation, and lime arsenation were studied. The reaction products were identified using chemical analysis, x-ray diffraction, SEM analysis, and optical microscopy. The results are discussed in terms of the utilization of lime to capture sulfur and arsenic during the roasting of refractory precious metal concentrates. More than 99.9% of the arsenic and 98% of the sulfur are contained when roasting pyrite and arsenopyrite with hydrated lime under typical roasting conditions.

Drilling and Blasting are two important unit operations in the production cycle of a mine and a strong link exists between these two and other unit operations/subsystems like loading, transportation, and crushing. Under the present concept of ? Mine to Mill?, it is important to optimize the drilling and blasting operations by applying scientific approach to drilling and blasting using sophisticated instruments and new technologies, which depends heavily on Information technology (IT) to meet this imperative. Development of innovative models and software has lead to blast optimization process. Till date, the blast results are evaluated in terms of available empirical approaches like powder factor, which are too simple to exclude some key parameters or lack in providing reliability because of non-availability of user friendly IT enabled techniques. Although with the help of developed approaches, formulation of user-friendly software to assist the site engineers in effective post blast assessment has started but there is a dearth of holistic approach to design an optimum blast considering the techno-economic feasibility of the subsystems and the geo-mining conditions to achieve blast optimization. The science of IT enablement in drilling and blasting is capable to build innovative models for achieving blast performances which will be doped with productivity, economy and safety with due regard to environment. The present paper discusses the use of existing IT enablement in various mines of India citing the Indian scenario and the future requirements for achieving the techno-economics in overall mining operations.

Some of the more important may be mentioned to indicate their general character. In the "advertisement to such parents as have now (or expect to have) children prepared to be educated in the College of New York," which appeared in the New York Mercury of June 3, 1754, Samuel Johnson, the first president of King's College, the predecessor of Columbia, said that it was the "design of this college to instruct and perfect the youth," among other things, "in the arts of Numbering and Measuring of Surveying, and Navigation and Geography. . . . and in the Air, Water and Earth around us, and, the various kinds of Meteors, Stones, Mines and Minerals, Plants and Animals; and in the knowledge of all Nature in the Heavens above us, and of everything useful for the Comfort, Convenience and the Elegance of Life . . . " Though the concept that natural science should be used to enlarge the bounds of human life was thus implicit at Columbia from the very beginning (John Stevens graduated from it in 1768, James Renwick in 1807, Horatio Allen in 1823, and A. An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) was used to study the leaching of pure gold in deaerated 1 M Na2S solution. Multiple cyclic voltammograms were measured between -0.76 and 1.242 V (SHE) at 20 mV/sec and 2 mV/sec and the frequency shift of the quartz crystal was simultaneously measured. Both the forward and reverse scans showed oxidation occurred between -0.40 to 0.20V. The frequency shift increased during both the forward and reverse scans in the potential range of -0.40 to -0.06 V indicating electrode mass decreased. Since at -0.40 to 0.20 V oxidation peaks were also observed, part of the oxidation was due to oxidation of gold. Eh-pH diagrams were constructed and showed soluble Au(I)-S(IV) species formed between -0.30 and 0.10 V (SHE). Atomic absorption spectroscopy of the test solutions and the mass change recorded by EQCM both showed about 0.015 mg of gold leached. Since the majority of the frequency shift increase corresponding to gold oxidation occurred at -0.40 to -0.06 V during multiple cyclic voltammogram measurement, the total leaching of gold could be approximated to occur at this potential interval to give a leaching rate of ca. 6.4x10-5 mg/s-cm2.

The demand and supply of wollastonite has gone through a dynamic period in the 1990's. A 10% -15% growth rate of demand stimulated interest in evaluating new projects. However, the mid-1990's brought declining prices for commodity applications and natural barriers to entry for technical applications, making many of these potential projects uneconomic. Successful projects that were brought to market were done so by incumbent producers. This work examines the competitive structure of the wollastonite market by evaluating the strategic decisions of the industry leader, NYCO Minerals Inc., and a new market entrant, Orleans Resources, in an attempt to identify the environmental threats and opportunities of this industry. Results suggest new entrants like Orleans Resources face significant entry barriers for technical applications, while NYCO Minerals could improve its profitability by having less exposure to commodity applications.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream pH is very important in leach mining and treatment of MIW (mining influenced water). On the production side, solution acidity can impact SX (solvent extraction) effectiveness through PLS (pregnant leach solution) and raffinate pH. Many older operations and legacy mining sites generate ARD (acid rock drainage) that is too weak for profitable metal production by conventional means and faces costly wastewater treatment for mitigation and disposal. For wastewater and environmental treatment, neutralization to precipitate and remove metal contaminants to clean the wastewater is the dominant approach. Traditional lime neutralization and precipitation is most often used but results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS); which focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources, has developed a new “reagentless” neutralization process. Electricity is utilized in its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform capability to controllably raise target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost approach yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. It can result in less sludge generation and enables possibilities to selectively recover contaminants as potentially saleable products for new revenue generation to offset further offset treatment costs. "Edge effect is a condition widely observed in High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) operations that gives rise to reduced comminution at the edges of the roll surfaces. This effect is caused by a reduction in the local crushing pressure at the edges of the rolls resulting from the sliding friction between the static cheek plates and HPGR feed material. Practically, this has an impact on equipment sizing, as the edge effect leads to coarser particles reporting to downstream equipment in open-circuit operations and increased circulating load and diminished HPGR circuit capacity in closed-circuit operations.To address this, Metso's HRC™ HPGR incorporates an Arch-frame to maintain a parallel relationship between the rolls and allow for the use of a flanged roll design. We conducted a series of pilot-plant tests with a 750 mm by 400 mm HRC HPGR to compare the performance of the flanged roll design against that of a traditional cheek plate arrangement under similar operating conditions. The edge effect was found to be significantly reduced with the flanged roll design. Based on the pilot-plant results, the implications for circuit design, energy efficiency and overall plant performance in a full-scale application were investigated and discussed.IntroductionGlobal trends such as lower ore grades and rising operating costs are driving the market toward more energy-efficient mineral processing solutions, most notably in comminution circuit design. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) have been recognized as an energy-efficient solution relative to more conventional circuit designs. The basic operating principle of HPGRs, in which a fairly uniform pressure is applied to a bed of material in the compression zone, lends itself to this improved energy efficiency (Morley, 2006). Studies have estimated that savings of 10-15 percent are possible when comparing an HPGR circuit with a traditional SABC circuit (Rosario and Hall, 2008). While HPGRs offer a more energy-efficient solution than tumbling mills, there is still room for improvement in many aspects of the design. Edge effect, in particular, is one such aspect that limits the effectiveness of the machines. Edge effect is the impaired performance at the edge of the rolls due to a reduction in crushing pressure (Morley, 2010; van der Meer, 2010). As described in our prior work (Knorr, Herman and Whalen, 2013), edge effect is caused by the interaction between the ore entering the crusher and the relatively static cheek plates positioned at the edges of the rolls. As the material is drawn into the crushing zone, the sliding friction between the ore and the cheek plates inhibits the ability of material to be effectively drawn into the compression zone at the edges of the rolls. This reduces the crushing force in those edge regions relative to the center of the roll where material is being drawn into the compression zone at a higher rate. In addition, the cheek plates of a traditional HPGR design are held in place by spring-loaded brackets that are adjustable to manage the clearance. This spring-loaded cheek plate design prevents full compression of the material in the edge regions of the roll as there is relief at the outer edges."

Many changes have taken place in the "World Cement Market" since Joseph Aspdin discovered portland cement in the early 1800's. At the turn of the century, production of cement world wide was a few million tons; today, it is over one billion tons. By 1995, world production is estimated to reach 1.2 billion tons. Cement processing has changed from inefficient, small vertical kilns to large efficient, precalcining kilns, and large automated crushing, blending and grinding systems. Consequently the cost of production has declined in real terms, resulting in significant economic benefits to the general public. In addition, quality and uniformity of cement have increased, strengths have increased, and at least 25% fewer pounds of cement are needed for each cubic yard of concrete. Today, cement moves thousands of miles on the inland rivers and great lakes of the U. S., across Siberia and across the oceans of the world. The volume of cement moving more than a few hundred miles is almost 100 million tons, or 10% of world production. Today, on a per ton basis, it costs no more to move 40,000 tons of cement to the United States from the Western Pacific rim or from Europe than it does to truck cement 200 miles. For example, cement shipped by water from Spain costs $5.00 to $7.00 per ton compared to cement shipped by truck 200 miles at $16.00 per ton. This low cost water transportation has been a major factor for the increased movement of cement between countries. Table 1, Cement Production Summary-World, gives a global picture of production, export and import tonnages in recent years. Figure 1 is a graph showing CEMENT PRODUCTION SUMMARY WORLD WIDE.
