"Optimisation of drill and blast design and engineering can deliver a significant positive impact on the profitability of any mining operation; however, true engineering of the blasting process is less common than might be thought. The paper that follows explores this gap and suggests a process control-based approach to the challenge.The concept of applying modifications to drill and blast designs in order to achieve efficiency improvements in downstream mining processes is far from new. However, the author suggests that the practical application has become less than rigorous in a number of different sectors of the mining industry in a wide range of countries.There is a common tendency for the design process to become simplified to the point where the objective is merely the communication of instructions to field implementers (drillers, explosive suppliers, blasters, etc). In effect ‘design’ often degrades to ‘cut and paste’ with consequences that vary from mild to critical, with respect to the profitability of the business.Engineering of the drill and blast process involves the design function, not on a one-off basis but rather as a component of a more complete cyclical process that includes a statement of objectives, a design based on a suggested hypothesis, field measurement of results, comparison with the target ‘set point’ and the application of control measures followed by new measurement, including interpretation of the results in financial terms.When applied in this fashion, engineering provides practitioners with the means to optimise the drill and blast impact on the full spectrum business result of the mining activity.These concepts are discussed with reference to a surface gold mining operation applying run-of-mine heap leach extraction. Engineering optimisation by adapting process control and measurement techniques is demonstrated to be a key component of the solution set applied to generate enhanced operations productivity and stakeholder value. It is shown that a combination of rigorous measurement, model calibration and hands-on quality assurance/quality control facilitates the creation of a road map to profitability, stressing the need to consider economic trade-offs between operational expense (investment) and measurement of enhanced value (return on investment).The process, however, does not cease at this point. Implementation of true design practices, incorporating innovation and discipline in implementation or execution can drive the process to deliver demonstrable, technically validated outcomes. Furthermore, these technical results can be related to financially quantifiable impacts. However, this accomplishment does not guarantee that these gains or savings will reach the bottom line of those mining, quarrying and construction companies that begin the process with such high hopes.CITATION:Adamson, W R, 2015. Research on alternative lixiviants for gold is ongoing; however few people have looked at complete flowsheets. Alternative lixiviants are typically applied at concentrations 50 to 100 times those required for cyanidation. The higher concentrations make lixiviant recycle a vital part of the process. In addition it is no longer feasible to rely on lixiviant destruction to produce lixiviant free clean water for recycle to the comminution circuit. Ausenco has worked with Barrick to integrate reverse osmosis into the thiosulfate RIL processing flowsheet that forms the basis of the plant upgrade currently being constructed at Barrick’s Goldstrike autoclave facility.

Operations downstream of mining and beneficiation are still being subjected to increasing scrutiny as highly capitalized projects have been either slow to achieve their targets or have actually failed to do so. Leaching and smelting projects have fundamentally high calls on capital and technology as reaction rates are increased and the capture and disposal of unwanted products are subjected to greater restrictions. Separating value from waste inherently becomes riskier as the purification of the desired product imposes greater demands on the process to produce benign wastes. When we superimpose on the chemistry of the project severe predictions of throughput rates, that bring in facets of manufacturing, we are introducing complexities that the records show are not handled well. This paper discusses some of the more common challenges that operators face and what methods are available and are likely to be successful in preventing the loss of value as projects are brought on-stream. This thinking needs to start much earlier and at greater intensity than our industry has normally chosen to employ.

Steel and iron pipe lined with cement to protect it against corrosion has been used in the municipal water systems of the New England States since about 1870. In most recent years, the petroleum industry adopted cement-lined pipe to forestall corrosion, particularly in those areas where large quantities of corrosive brines and hydrogen sulfide are associated with the oil produced. Many of the oil companies had on hand large quantities of corroded pipe, normally disposed of as scrap, which could be cleaned, lined with cement, and returned to service. It was soon learned that after the so-called scrap pipe was lined with cement much of it could serve fully as well as new cement-lined pipe. The demand for lining used pipe with cement resulted in the establishment of several processing, plants in the Mid-Continent oil-producing area. Today six cement-lining plants serve the areas three in Oklahoma and one each in Kansas, Texas, and Illinois. All of these plants have lined large quantities of used pipe for the brine-disposal systems of western Kansas, Illinois, and east Texas and also for the operators of water-flooding projects in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas, where large quantities of brine and fresh water are being injected into the oil-bearing formations as a secondary oil-recovery method. Since war demands during the past 2 years have created an acute shortage of steel, the need of reclaiming used pipe for the expansion of oil-producing operations has become more evident than ever before. Thus the new industry (about 6 years old) - lining used pipe with cement - is saving large quantities of steel at a critical time by reclaiming used pipe and preventing further- corrosion.

World demand for phosphate rock has increased significantly in the past fifteen years. Prior to the early 1960's, most of the world production was obtained from Florida, North Africa, and Kola. As the 1960's arrived, new mines in North Florida and Eastern North Carolina, as well as expanded production in the Western United States, .increased domestic production. Many new mines overseas have also become significant. This includes countries such as Senegal, Togo, Israel, Spanish Sahara, and Jordan. Limited production, often as by-products, has been noted in South Africa, Brazil, and other countries. In recent years, and even recent months, we have learned of many new areas being considered as potential sources of phosphate rock. This includes Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Many other developing countries have discoveries and are considering their new deposits, often with difficult beneficiation problems, as potential sources of phosphate. These factors all relate to expanded world, population and the demand for more fertilizer products to produce food. In this paper, four areas of the world with different types of phosphate deposits are briefly reviewed to contrast the ore beneficiation problems to Florida procedures--long considered the "standard" of the industry, at least for most of the United States' domestic production. Agrico has three large operating mines in Florida with total production capacity exceeding seven million tons per year. Here, pebble phosphate (+14 mesh material) is produced without the use of flotation, whereas all of the material finer than 14 mesh is subjected to flotation beneficiation to upgrade into high grade concentrates.

THE views and observations expressed herein on this old but constantly recurring question are our own, no effort having been made to align them with standard texts. Therefore, while they may find general acceptance amongst fellow engineers, they must stand as personal opinions and as such are open to debate and discussion. In order properly to consider the subject, it should first be 'set in proper perspective. Why are Prospects Examined? Prospects are examined to determine whether they may contain economic concentrations of metals or minerals, the legitimate mining business being run, pretty largely, to make money. Next to food and clothing, modern civilization is based on metals, with which are included in this discussion minerals, oils, and fuels. A constant and increasing demand for the common metals requires the location of replacements for depleted orebodies, while the use and appreciation of new metals brings increasing demand for them. Aluminium is a good example of a metal which has, within recent years, made great progress. Today, we are becoming increasingly aware of magnesium, chromium, tungsten, thallium, and other lesser known, metals.

Introduction The production of magnesium by direct reduction of the oxide has far passed the experimental stage and was responsible for 30 per cent of the recent wartime production of 246,000 tons per annum. This paper describes the small-scale experiments which culminated in a number of the wartime plants. The paper traces the author's early experiments on various direct reduction reactions leading to his choice of the ferrosilicon reduction of dolomite and the realization that this reaction would proceed at a satisfactory rate at temperatures obtainable in metal apparatus. MgO has a standard heat of formation of 146,100 cal. and is therefore one of the most difficult oxides to reduce. However, if advantage is taken of the relative volatility of magnesium metal, thermally unfavourable reactions may be utilized. In reaction MgO + X = XO+ Mg . . . . . . . . . . . . . (1) the removal of Mg as a gas at high temperatures displaces the equilibrium to the right in the face of the unfavourable thermo-chemistry which is inevitable with any X other than calcium metal. If X is carbon, not only is the reaction highly endothermic, but CO is gaseous. A temperature of l,864°C. is required to produce a pressure of one atmosphere of Mg. Between l,900°C. and perhaps 400°C., the back reaction takes place readily and special shock cooling devices are required to recover magnesium from the gaseous mixture. This reaction does not lend itself to small-scale experiments and was not examined by the author. If, in reaction, carbon is replaced by a relatively pan-volatile metal, the oxide of which is also non-volatile and possesses a fairly high heat of formation, a reduction reaction is offered which is free from the difficulties associated with carbon. The typical case of silicon will serve as an example: 2MgO + Si = SiO2 + 2Mg (g) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (2) At temperatures above l,000°C., a positive pressure of magnesium will exist over the system. Removal of the magnesium vapour will displace the reaction to the right in the face .of an unfavourable thermal balance. Since magnesium is the only volatile component at this temperature, it may be evolved and condensed, using attractively simple distillation technique.

The annual production of mineral and mineral-based wastes in Canada is conservatively estimated to be 400 million tons. Over 90 per cent of this amount is waste rock or mill tailings from the mining and mineral processing industry. The remainder are slags and ashes from the metallurgical industry, and sludges from the chemical industry. Because of impurity content, remote location, or both, most wastes have limited usefulness and, indeed, are a liability in that they must be transported to waste disposal sites and contained therein. Certain mineral wastes do, however, have potential value. Some contain small percentages of metals that may be economically recoverable with price increases; others consist of mineral material that may be used for such purposes as road base, construction aggregate, railroad ballast, and in the manufacture of bricks or blocks. Increased interest has been shown in mineral wastes in recent years. This paper reviews the types of mineral wastes available in Canada, briefly describes a number that have potential value, and notes possible uses and related research by CANMET and other organizations.

This paper, describing the leaching practice at the Calumet and Hecla mills, Lake Linden, Mich., is one of a series on milling methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The reclamation plant is located along the shores of Torch Lake at a slightly lower level than the concentrator itself. The entire location of the original concentrator, in connection with the present reclamation plant, has been ideal, lore particularly as the leaching and flotation departments are common to both units. After 15 years of operation and with the reclamation sands just a little more than half exhausted it would appear that the remaining life of the deposit could be worked by the present plan, without decided changes or renewals of plant or equipment.

Ladies and Gentlemen: As we begin these three crowded days of technical and economic discussion of problems faced by mining and metallurgical engineers, it seems appropriate at this Keynote Session to consider the future of this industry from which we derive our livelihood, It is also appropriate at this international meeting to view our industry on a world-wide basis. First, let us assess the world's future needs for minerals - the needs which it is our industry's task to meet. Next, let us look at what supplies of minerals may be available to meet those needs. I will speak of this first in terms of the physical availabilities of minerals. Finally, we can consider some of the social or institutional factors which will condition the world's mining industry as it goes about its task of discovering, developing, producing, and delivering the minerals needed to meet the world's demands. Let me give you a foretaste of my conclusions. First, future world demands upon our industry will be enormous, eclipsing anything that we have known up to this point. Second, there is strong evidence that our earth's crust contains a sufficient physical quantity and variety of minerals to meet forthcoming needs for as long a period ahead as one can envisage.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the ?fire door? type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self -Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brake s II by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. Sterry Hunt, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, in the chair. Dr. Hunt introduced Monsieur S. Rivard, Mayor of Montreal, who spoke as follows : GENTLEMEN: We welcome you with pleasure to our city, and we are proud to find that you have deemed it worthy of your visit. I understand that your association was founded in 1871 with some thirty courageous members, and that so valuable has it been esteemed, and so attractive was it found, that nearly one thousand have now enrolled their names as members and associates. Much of civilization is due to the discovery of metals, and the magnitude of our works to their widespread abundance. Europe has long since been-dug into and perforated with shafts and galleries in search of metals, and great wealth, and power, and comfort have arisen there-from ; but by an increase of knowledge, and more than European enterprise and energy, America is following rapidly in the race, and by means of natural advantages of a geological character has out-stripped the Old World. Maps may have various delineations, but the veins and arteries of commerce and the nerves of science knit all together into one social organism with the same vital functions. This paper has been written to aid the owner of a small gold mine or prospect in preparing a report on his property for the purpose of interesting capital. If an owner can afford to do so, he should employ a mining engineer of recognized standing and experience to examine and report on his property, but many owners of small -mines and particularly of prospects cannot make the expenditure required for this. Further, many of them do not know how to prepare a description which will cover those features of a deposit on which a potential investor promises his opinion as to its worth. If such an owner is convinced that he possesses an orebody of sufficient grade and size to warrant the required expenditure for a thorough investigation and wishes to present his property to prospective investors, then the following suggestions concerning the proper way to sample his deposit, estimate the tonnage of developed and probable ore, and prepare a report may be of assistance.

A wide range of mineral-derived products are required by the electronics industry for it to function. In one form or another, almost all the known elements have been experimented with and tested for various electrical applications. The two major areas for which minerals are used in electronics are as conductors and semiconductors. Conductors provide the means to transport and distribute electricity, while the main application of semiconductors has been to manipulate electricity. Silicon is the most widely recognized semiconductor material, but gallium, indium, and germanium are rated as the most important metals to the semiconductor industry for future and near future technologies.

Computer-controlled machine sorting may, if properly applied, have a dramatic effect on overall economics of a mine operation. Radiometric and photometric sorters have been used for many years and new developments will be reported, such as a sorter for fine particles and a conductivity/magnetic sorter. Application examples with emphasis on precious metals will be given. Economics for some of the projects will be reviewed and discussed. Sorting underground is shown to be particularly attractive, but machine sorting would be profitable in most cases based on savings in transportation and milling/beneficiation costs only.

"THE SUBJECT of permanent molding has received a great deal of attention in the technical press as illustrated by the many excellent articles in the bibliography which follows. In general, this covers the period 1940-1958 and is merely representative of what is available. Numbers in •brackets refer to items in the bibliography.It may be desirable at the outset to give a few definitions covering those terms directly related to this subject. The following is a definition of permanent-mold casting as given by J. W. Meier in a paper, ""The Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys"", read before the Ottawa Valley Chapt.er of the American Society for Metals:""Permanent Mold Casting is used where a large number of castings of the same part are required and higher mechanical properties, greater density and closer tolerances are essential. Since metallic mold s are very expensive, the number of castings must be sufficient to, defray, at least partially, the added expense. Molds are usually made from a good quality cast iron, 1but other mold materials, such as the aluminum and copper alloys, graphite, ceramics, etc., are being used in certain cases. Important factors in permanent mold casting are the mold temperature; the proper mold dressing; and, as in all other casting methods, the mold geometry, that is to say, the design of spruces, gates, risers and vents""."

The use of coal as a fuel causes air, pollution in; a number of different forms, and in nearly all stages of its, handling, preparation, storage, use and-disposal of its residue. First let us consider the handling of coal. As shipped, particularly to large utilities, it is run-of-mine bituminous made up of large chunks as well as pulverized particles. Because it 'is in an open car or barge, it is subject to the action o winds and the small particles may be blown around adding to the-particulate load in the atmosphere. Mien un¬loaded from the barge or car, there is again an opportunity for the wind to blow the fine particles around. All of us I am sure have seen a barge at the dock of a utility plant being unloaded by a clamshell bucket. This, after grabbing its load from the barge, lifts it some 60 or 70 feet and, then drops it on a conveyor, which carries the coal to a storage area.

"Growing interest in the developing technique of improving the dewatering of filter cakes by the direct application of steam has been apparent during the past year. A number of applications to iron and base-metal concentrates are under study, and intensive work continues on applications to coal cleaning.This paper presents and discusses the data presently available. The effects of material characteristics and operating variables on final cake moisture are examined. Although it is not yet possible to answer all questions regarding the applicability of the technique to specific problems from general data correlations, it is found that the use of these in con-junction with empirical data derived from properly conducted laboratory tests does yield reliable conclusions.Emphasis is placed on the basic economics of the process, and on de-sign criteria for ""steam drying"" filter stations, as applied particularly to metallurgical concentrates. Examples of the use of laboratory tests to solve application problems are given."

"LocationThe Key Lake operation of Cameco Corporation is located at latitude 57°N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southem boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest city is LaRonge, located 240 km to the south. Access to the mine is by all-weather road and by private airstrip.Description of OperationThe mill was designed to produce twelve million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8) a year from a feed grade of 2.4% U3O8. Current production is fourteen million pounds from 2.0% feed.Following grinding, the uranium is leached using sulphuric acid and oxygen in autoclaves. An eight thickener counter current decantation (CCD) circuit is used to separate the uranium-bearing solution from the solid waste residue. The uranium in solution is further purified in a solvent extraction circuit. The purified uranium is then precipitated using ammonia, calcined at 840°C, and packaged in drums for shipping to refineries. There is a crystallization circuit to recover excess ammonium sulphate produced in the process, and a waste treatment circuit.HistoryUranerz Exploration and Mining discovered the Gaertner and Deilmann orebodies in 1975 and 1976, respectively. Between 1975 and 1977, Uranerz conducted laboratory studies and delineated a process for the Key Lake ore known as the ""Bonn process."" In 1977, Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. was retained to conduct further studies in cooperation with U ranerz. The technical feasibility of the Bonn process was generally confirmed. Howeve1~ alternative processing methods also appeared feasible, and over the period 1978-1979, a detailed research and development program was conducted to finalize the processes to be used and to provide data for design of the plant."
