The titanium industry is based on the unique properties of titanium dioxide and titanium metal. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide in its two main allotropic forms, rutile and anatase, is the predominant white pigment for paints, paper, plastics, rubber, and various other materials. Titanium metal, because of its high strength/weight ratio and resistance to corrosion, is widely used for aircraft, both in airframes and engines, for powerplant surface condensers, and a wide variety of chemical processing and handling equipment. U.S. production of titanium dioxide pigment in 1979 was about 658,000 tons - 2/, valued at about $770 million. Net shipments of titanium mill products were around 19,000 tons, worth about $380 million. These two major uses account for over 96% of domestic titanium consumption. The third largest application, the use of rutile for coating welding rods, required about 9,500 tons of rutile concentrate, worth about $4 million. Other applications of titanium-bearing raw materials include the manufacture of titanium carbides, ceramics, and chemicals, and the recently developed use of ilmenite as a substitute for barite in well-drilling muds.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation of phosphoric acid directly from phosphate ore, without prior beneficiation, in a small-scale, continuous process research unit, as part of an effort to improve minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources while minimizing environmental effects. Three phosphate-matrix samples, ranging in grade from 18.2 pct P20S5to 11.9 pct P205, were dry-fed at a rate of 1.82 kg/hr (4 lb/hr) to a continuous-circuit, 12-liter, single-tank digester to yield phosphoric acid and byproduct gypsum filter cake. Comparison with earlier data shows that a significantly improved filtration rate was attained in a single-tank reactor compared with that attained in a five-tank reactor train processing the same ore. Iron and aluminum impurities in the product phosphoric acid averaged about 60 pct higher than amounts reported in commercially prepared, concentrate-derived acid. All gypsum filter cakes prepared had a firm, sandy texture, rendering them physically suitable for stacking or landfill use. Introduction of dry attritioning and air classification approximately doubled the attainable filtration rate when the dry-beneficiated product was digested. In air classification, there was a 12-to 14-pct P205 loss. Depending on the technique used and the matrix grade, overall P205 recovery ranged from about 72 to 89 pct.

Research in the field of cut-off grade optimisation has shown a relationship between cut-off grade, project life and net present value (NPV). Lane’s theory demonstrates that cut-off grades can be optimised in order to maximise project profitability. Although the theory forms the basis for many open pit mining projects, application of the theory in underground mining remains limited to-date. The main reason for this is the complex interaction between all processes in underground mine planning, which makes it difficult to apply Lane’s mathematical optimisation approach.Recently a new stope optimiser product was released. The AMS Stope Optimiser automates the design of underground stopes at user-defined cut-off grades and allows for rapid evaluation of mine designs at different cut-off grades. Using this software, an optimisation approach was developed and validated on an underground gold deposit in northern Sweden. Potential project NPV increased by approximately 30 per cent when using this new approach.Spatial grade uncertainty in mineral resources was identified to be a major risk in underground stope design. The optimisation approach was further extended to account for grade risk using estimated and stochastic simulated resource models. The resulting optimisation process accounts for grade risk early in the design process and reduces the risk of a stope not meeting the cut-off grade with subsequent financial loss.CITATION:Bootsma, M T, Alford, C, Benndorf, J and Buxton, M W N, 2014. The Bureau of Mines has devised techniques to recover lithium from geothermal brines as the chloride. More than 99 pct of the lithium was precipitated from a brine containing 170 mg/L Li by adding a solution of AICl3 and increasing the pH to 7.5 with lime slurry. The Li-Al precipitate was dissolved in HCl and sparged with gaseous HCI to recover the AlCl3; this resulted in a solution containing LiCl and CaCI2. The solution was evaporated at 1000 C to obtain a mixture of the chlorides from which 97 pct of the lithium was recovered and 90 pct of the calcium was rejected by leaching with tetrahydrofuran. The LiCl recovered by evaporation of the tetrahydrofuran was purified by dissolution in water and treatment with oxalic acid. The final LiCl solution contained 89 pct of the lithium originally present in the brine and had a purity of 99.9 pet.

In focusing on open pit mine scheduling, one of the biggest areas that a mining engineer can add value is in the area of cut-off grade optimisation. It is not atypical to add up to an extra 20 per cent in value by bringing forward higher-grade ore and deferring costs into the future.There are many techniques available to maximise net present value (NPV) when applied to open pit mine scheduling. That in itself raises the question of why so many of these techniques exist. The short answer is that none of these techniques are robust. Every time the problem changes, the algorithms also have to change.Instead of trying to make a problem fit the constraints of an existing technique, there is much to be said for usefully hybridising different approaches. This paper describes an innovative approach where evolutionary algorithms are combined with both local search and linear programming. The goal is maximising NPV through optimisation of cut-off grade policy and extraction sequence for an open pit mine. The cut-off/cut-over grade policy produced caters for multiple processing streams and stockpiles.Finally we demonstrate the quality of the algorithm by comparing some results with a well-known mathematical solution.CITATION:Myburgh, C A, Deb, K and Craig, S, 2014. The basic principles of systems analysis are presented. A model has been designed to determine the location of the Main opening in the presence of three or more stock orebodies. The necessary condition is to find a location for the Collection point which is an essential element in opening up each orebody (stock). The model takes into account the total transportation costs from each orebody to the collection point. Three variants are considered provided that the orefield is divided into two levels at least: - a collection point is designed at every level; - a collection point is designed at the lowest level, i.e. where the so-called concentration level is formed; - the collection point is located at a point between the planes of the two levels; The effect of the depth of mining and mine output on determining the method of opening up the orefield has been analyzed by considering a vertical and/or an inclined shaft. A function has been constructed which allows for investigating in both a static and dynamic regime the capital costs for constructing the whole complex including the shaft. The character of the function does not allow finding the global limits. Therefore, it is of particular importance to specify the limiting conditions. In this case these are the flow capacity of development openings and the shaft. The basic groups of cost and natural indicators for assessing and selecting an optimal technological solution have been systematized. The combined analysis of the two approaches to finding the location of the Main opening and determining the mining method enables us to determine when an inclined shaft is best, and the depth at which opening by a vertical shaft has no alternative. Thus, a transition area is formed for which the selection of an optimal technological solution requires an analysis similar to that proposed in this paper. Conclusions are finally drawn which serve as a basis for determining the areas of application of each opening, including the use of a combined scheme of mine opening. The approach presented can be used in both investigating the possibilities for opening up new orefields and reconstructing existing ones in cases when the mining operations go deeper.

With the increasing need to exercise better control over mill circuits has come a requirement to develop rapid, accurate means of measuring circuit parameters. One of the most important parameters is the assay of the material in the circuit (or about to be introduced to the circuit). To date, most on-stream analysis has been performed using X-ray fluorescence equipment. Neutron activation offers an alternative method in certain circumstances, and one which has several interesting advantages. Recognizing the need for a simple, safe neutron activation unit suitable for on-stream analysis in the mineral industries, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited has designed, built and tested the SHERLOCK system. One prototype (SHERLOCK I) is located in Ottawa and is now used primarily in research. A second prototype (SHERLOCK III) is located in Vancouver at the laboratories of B.C. Research. This unit is being used for some development research and for evaluating the unit in specific applications. Most of the work completed to date has been aimed at proving the technique and in developing some of the parameters needed to design systems for a milling plant. Funding for the work has been through research grants and through sponsor¬ship by interested companies.

Early solvent extraction circuits in the uranium industry utilized bona fide kerosenes as diluents for extractant chemicals. These kerosenes were used successfully in the uranium industry; however, at least one plant was destroyed by fire resulting from the use of a low flash point kerosene. Although the term "kerosene" is used throughout the solvent extraction industry, the authors have been unable to find any use of kerosene in copper solvent extraction circuits. A term that is occasionally used with reference to diluents is "metallurgical kerosene." Such a term is unrecognizable in the petroleum industry. Kerosene [or kerosine] is a flammable hydrocarbon mixture that is less volatile than gasoline. It is produced for combustion purposes and may have variable compositions of organic compounds including alkanes, alkenes, alkines, and aromatics. Diluents are constant composition hydrocarbon mixtures developed specifically for use in solvent extraction processes. These products usually have much lower vapor pressures and higher flash points than kerosene. In solvent extraction systems, they typically comprise 70 to 95 v/o percent of the circuit organic. The primary purpose of the diluent is to adjust the extractant concentration to the working range of the operation. The diluent and extractant must be completely soluble or miscible with each other. Secondary diluent effects are to promote transfer kinetics, optimize phase disengagement, and minimize both organic in aqueous and aqueous in organic entrainment.

A basic precept in mineral exploration is that the best places to prospect are where minerals have already been found. The California desert has many old mining districts once thought to be "played out" that are currently producing more mineral wealth than at any time in the past. Because no "crystal ball" exists that will enable us to predict the Nation's future mineral needs, land management plans must be flexible enough to respond to these often unforeseen needs. MANAGEMENT ISSUES The California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) (figure 1) encompasses 25 minion acres, nearly one-quarter of the total area of California. Passage of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA) launched an intensive program by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to study this vast area. Painstaking scientific investigations were made of wildlife and plant populations, soil, air, and mineral resources, range use, and wilderness characteristics, among other environmental concerns.

The system will Initiate automatic shutdown of mining machinery when excessive concentrations of methane are encountered. The prime consideration: In the design were small size, Improved accuracy and reliability, fast response and a transient resistant power supply capable of reliable operation from any mine power source. The power supply contains an internal battery that provides operating power to the detection system prior to mining machine start-up or after machine shutdown. This report documents the development program from conception through in-mine testing.

The Virginia copper district is situated in North Carolina and Virginia. It contains many mines and prospects that were active at the turn of the nineteenth century. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project in September 1942 to investigate and explore the most promising of the mines in the district. The Seaboard, High Hill, Durgy, and Blue Wing mines were the sites of the main project activity. This report deals principally with these four mines. Drilling did not discover any new ore shoots but indicated the persistence of known ore shoots in depth. There appears to be no indication of impoverishment of copper with depth.

Net Present Value Impact of Discount Rate The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method of valuations is universally used and accepted. The main criticism of the method is that it does not recognize the value of projects long life projects. This can be seen in the preceding graph where the present value of cash flows in later years are small for discount rates over about 10%. This graph covers a project that has a 25 year operating life. It is clear from the low height of the NPV bars at 10% and 15% in the last years of the project that an additional 25 years would add almost no value to total project NPV. As an example of this effect, an colleague undertook the evaluation of a pulp and paper project. The plant could be justified, but it was not possible to justify planting the trees as they took too long to grow and so had not appreciable NPV. The plant had to purchase wood to feed the plant.

"A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob. INTRODUCTION During a series of stakeholder meetings, a near unanimous concern was expressed related to maintenance of effective ventilation airflow on longwall faces. There was a strong interest expressed regarding the impacts of face length and caving characteristics on the ability to maintain adequate face airflow levels. This study seeks to understand and improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations across the longwall face by assessing airflow variations in terms of roof caving characteristics and face length. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers seek to identify flow paths of ventilation airflow on longwall panels with variations in roof caving characteristics and longwall face lengths. The project research aims to develop an understanding of the role of gas dynamics in variable broken rock, interactions with ventilation airflow and methane concentrations across the longwall face area. The research also addresses continuous ventilation monitoring along the shield line to provide early detection of gas exchanges between face and gob, and thus improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations around the face. In the context of this paper, the longwall gob refers to the pillared area behind the shields. This work reports on results from one project task to conduct field based research using a tracer gas to describe face air and gob area gas movement in a bleederless longwall ventilation system that incorporated a back return."

Minerals contribute to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels - from mining and processing to the manufacturing of finished products. In 2010, the estimated real GDP of the United States increased by 2.8 percent compared with 2009 and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.6 trillion (Table 1).Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often rejected in mineral production and consumption rates. For instance, continued declines in the construction industry during 2010 were rejected in further reductions in the production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum, which are used almost exclusively in construction. Performances in other sectors were mixed and less easily characterized. Recovery from the economic decline of 2008-2009 became apparent in 2010, as prices for many mineral commodities continued to rise with increasing demand for those materials or the products in which they are found.

"One of the contributing factors to the extreme cost escalation in the first decade of the 21st century was the increase in the amount and cost of engineering work that went into studies and projects. Various reasons for this were identified, including unsatisfactory productivity due to a shortage of experienced/qualified engineers, the increased complexity and infrastructure requirements of many projects due to location, metallurgy that is more challenging and increasing environmental and social requirements. These conditions often led to unsatisfactory project results in terms of cost and schedule blowouts and created a loss of confidence – both internally and externally – in the industry’s ability to complete projects on time and on budget.Technical fundamentals aside, the experience and effectiveness of project teams has had, and continues to have, a major impact on project cost, schedule and ramp-up to nameplate capacity and operating parameters. There are unfortunately too many examples of where project teams have not been as effective as they could or should have been, all to the ultimate detriment of the project.Using the authors’ extensive experience on both owner’s and engineer’s teams, this paper discusses some of the main reasons for suboptimal team, and hence project, performance and offers thoughts on how best to build and maintain project teams. The analysis and conclusions drawn are built around the Tuckman model of group development known as ‘forming-storming-norming-performing’, which was first proposed some 50 years ago. The major role of financial institutions in the free world in the development of mineral resources is to provide the necessary capital in the form of loans to underwrite the development of these resources by the industry on a stable and continuous basis. This capital provided by the depositors to the bank must be invested in sound projects where the degree of risk is relatively small, the return on the investment is reasonable and the time to retire the loan is of short duration. Money is, therefore, one of the important ingredients along with technology, manpower and an exploitable resource that will provide a sound economic base in this region of development. Canadian banks are similar to banks of other western nations, although each country has some differences in their banking systems. The basic difference between the American and Canadian systems is that the former employs unit banking while the Canadian utilizes the more mobile branch system, which is prohibited or restricted in the United States and some other countries. Canadian banks are the subject of this paper, so, subsequent material will relate to Canadian banks unless indicated otherwise. It will be realized by everyone that the mineral industry is only one area of the economy in which the banks are interested and to cover the subject matter in the time allowed, the topic is restricted to mineral resource development. In Canada this is a vital sector of our economy and before we outline some of the details of financing and services involved in various aspects of mineral development, a review of the Canadian mineral industry is a necessary part of the sequence of presentation. The writer presents this material as a resource engineer advising a major bank in mineral matters, so the presentation may relate more to the financial problems of the developer

"El presente texto revisa el origen y distribución de los metales raros como parte de un proyecto de recuperación de subproductos de valor comercial en la fundición de La Oroya. Para ello se reeexaminan ocho minerales raros (bismuto, selenio, teluro, cadmio, talio, indio, bismuto, indio de alta pureza), cuya composición de elementos raros se registra en la concentración de algunos productos o residuos. Estos minerales son del grupo del cobre Chalcópirita, Enargita, Tetrahedrita, Bornita y Chalcosita; del plomo: la Galena, Jamesonita y Gratonita, y la Esfalerita que proporciona el zinc. Los concentrados y minerales que entran al proceso de fundición se reparten en tres circuitos principales: cobre, plomo y zinc. Los circuitos de los primeros están ligados entre sí por el sistema de Cottrelles y los procedimientos de las mismas fundiciones, mientras que el último actúa de forma independiente. Por último, es competencia del Departamento de Investigaciones, la recuperación de dichos subproductos a través del proceso de concentración y fundición, como de a búsqueda nuevos métodos en el campo minero y metalúrgico.
