In the last several years, the coal mining industry has made significant changes in the design of longwall mining systems to make them more productive. Some changes, such as increasing the length of the coal faces and increasing the capacity of the face conveyors, have resulted in problems with achieving sufficient motor torque to start and operate the longwall face conveyors. Other changes, such as increasing the size and/or decreasing the percent impedance of longwall power center transformers, have resulted in problems with the short-circuit currents on the transformer secondaries exceeding the interrupting ratings of the molded case circuit breakers used to protect the secondary circuits. A survey of 24 longwall mining systems in northern West Virginia was conducted to investigate both problems. The results of the survey are presented and analyzed. Several recommended solutions to the problems are presented to enable the coal mining industry to design safe and productive longwall mining systems.

The inherently explosion-proof mine (EPM) concept is based upon the non-flammability of certain combustible-oxidant-inert gas mixtures, and the effect of partial pressure of gases on physiological reactions. In a properly controlled underground environment, gas explosions are impossible, men can do work, and relatively high concentrations of methane would be permitted. A systems analysis has been performed to examine the physiological, engineering, and economic feasibility of such a concept, and methods and equipment are recommended for maintaining an EPM atmosphere in a bituminous coal mine producing a nominal two million tons of clean coal per year. It is concluded that: engineering feasibility can be demonstrated using subsystems and components that can be designed and built within the present state-of-the-art, that economic feasibility is possible within approximately five years, and that physiological feasibility is sufficiently promising to warrant continued investigation.

Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. "INTRODUCTION The Connellsville mine of the Yolande Coal & Coke Co. is in the southwestern part of Jefferson County, Ala., about 30 miles southwest of Birmingham. The mine is on the Blue Creek bed, which is about 6 feet thick and dips at a angle of 18º. The bed is worked by the room-and-pillar method and is mined by both machine and hand methods. The Blue Creek bed at this point yields a high ash, low-volatile coal with excellent coking properties. Because of its exceptionally low volatile content and high coking strength, this coal is excellent for blending with Alabama coals of higher volatile content and weaker coking properties to form blends suitable for production of metallurgical coke.A sample of washed coal taken during this investigation gave the following analysis on an as received"" basis: Moisture, 8.3 per cent; volatile matter-, 20.2 per cent; ash, 8.0 per cent; fixed carbon, 63.5 per cent. The high ash content of this coal limits the quantity which can be utilized when low-ash coke is required. In the Birmingham district it is usually difficult to sell as coking coal a product that contains more than 8.0 per cent ash. To produce a. coal with this ash content at Connellsville presents a somewhat difficult washing problem. This paper gives the results of an investigation that was conducted by the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Yolane Coal & Coke Co. for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the coal and the possibility of reducing its ash content on coal-washing tables.The practice at the Connellsville washery at the time of beginning this investigation was to crush the run-of-mine coal to pass a 1 1/2-inch round-hole screen and to treat the satire output on two primary, 3-compartment jigs. A. middling product was recovered from the primary jigs which was re-treated on a single-compartment rougher jig. This system yields a product of acceptable ash content, but the yield is low and the loss of good coal in the refuse is high."

Caving mining methods that are based on a planned caving of rock above and/or at times surrounding the material being mined can be classified in three broad categories: longwall mining, sublevel caving, and block caving. Each of the three methods involves a distinct technology as well as art of operation. Each requires a relatively large, regular, and predictable ore body. As a rule, the effect of mining results in some form of impact or change on the surface. Operationally, underground caving methods are characterized by high productivity as well as a high percentage of extraction of the mineral being mined. A key element for the productivity of this form of mining is the ability to standardize the various elements of work taking place underground. Therefore, work-men may perform a specialized role rather than function as all-around miners. Further, the nature of the mining methods lend them to a high level of mechanization. Operations and manpower can be centralized into a relatively small area where supervision can be concentrated and therefore be more effective. Productivity as well as safety benefits thereby. The caving method is unique in that the exploitation openings are deliberately destroyed by the process of mining. Rock mechanics principles focus on the ensurance and the propagation of the cave as well as the continuance of the mine openings designed to extract the broken ore. As a rule, production operations are designed to maintain a steady, continuous flow of ore from the extraction areas. This steady flow rather than an intermittent flow tends to promote good caving action as well as reduce hangups.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the history, characteristics, distribution, and mineral development potential of 21 lode gold deposits in or near the Chugach National Forest (CNF), AK. It includes findings from a 4-yr (1979 to 1982) mineral evaluation of the CNF conducted by the Bureau and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This evaluation, undertaken to provide the U.S. Forest Service with mineral resource data for use in making decisions on land use, included site-specific mapping and sampling of more than 200-lode gold deposits. The data presented here were compiled from the findings of this 4-yr evaluation and from existing literature. Fourteen of the 21 lode gold deposits described in this report contain a combined identified resource of 117,750 short tons (st) averaging 0.55 oz/st Au and 0.2 oz/st Ag. Two mineralized felsic dikes in the Summit Lake-Palmer Creek area contain a combined identified resource of 18 million st grading 0.02 oz/st Au and 0.16 oz/st Ag. Identified resources were not determined for the remaining five deposits because of a lack of information.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous .sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil, this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states. Information given on each heavy-oil deposit includes the following items: Field and formation, location, average or range of depth, average API gravity of oil, aver- age thickness of formation, areal extent of field, total productive wells drilled in field, discovery date of field, field status in 1963, cumulative production to Jan. 1, 1964, and all known types of secondary-recovery operations initiated (active and terminated) in the reservoirs. The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map, and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text. As of Jan. 1, 1964, 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place. It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history, such as the one in Missouri, were included, the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels. To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil, industry is developing technology in several types of thermal-recovery methods. Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study fur thermal-recovery techniques are: Lithology, depth, viscosity of reservoir fluids, gravity of oil, reservoir thickness, oil in place, and permeability and porosity.

A hypothetical economic model has been developed for diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic using data from recent exploration and mining projects. The model reflects economic conditions as it applies to the diamond mining industry in the Canadian Arctic at the present time. The economic model captures pre-production expenditures, production data, and post-production costs. Before- and after-tax cash flows are derived from the data along with the relevant economic criteria. From the corporate perspective, the model provides guidance as to the minimum size and/or in-situ value per tonne requirements of targets being sought in order to ensure economic success and probable exploration and development expenditures. From the government perspective, the model provides an indication of income and mining tax revenues that can be expected from a particular diamond project. The model shows, on average, diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic are expensive to explore for and develop, but are economically robust. They generate great economic return for mining companies and significant amounts of tax revenue for governments. The fact that diamonds can be transported directly from the mine site by air makes them particularly attractive targets for mining companies that operate in the Canadian Arctic.

In Europe and in certain other foreign countries studies have been made, extending over a period of years, relating to the winning of oil from oil shale. More work has been done in these countries than in the United States, for the reason that a supply of natural petroleum has not been so generally available there as here. Information has been obtained relating to present practices in these foreign lands in the development of a shale-oil industry. It is realized that in the past there has been very little inducement to invest capital in shale-oil enterprise in the United State's because the supply of petroleum has been plentiful; however, the time possibly is not far distant when the utilization of oil shale may be cons¬idered a desirable and financially sound venture, as it may be necessary before long to augment our supply of oil with that recovered by processing shale. The data presented herein portrays at least some of the thoughts of those engaged in obtaining oil from oil, shale in Europe, and they depict some of the results thus far obtained as well as certain plans for further efforts to win oil from shale; it is hoped that those who undertake the development of a shale-treating industry in this country will find useful information in this report.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYOverall red-ore reserves in the Birmingham, Ala., area were estimated in 1910 by E. F. Burchard 4/. Since then mining has progressed into areas classed by Burchard as ""unavailable for exploitation"" under conditions existing at that time. This is understandable when it is considered that red iron ore was valued at $1.19 a gross ton at the mine in Birmingham in 19102/ and by 1948 had risen 300 percent; 6/ that skips had replaced cars in slope haulage; that mechanical loading and rubber-tired haulage had replaced hand loading and mule or locomotive haulage; and that other more efficient mining methods had been introduced. Intensive study during the intervening 40 years has been given to ways and means for upgrading the low-grade ores in the area and combining or blending them with raw red and brown ores for improved blast-furnace feed.It is reasonable to expect that future progress in mining efficiency and increased knowledge of the beneficiation characteristics of marginal ores will permit extraction of red-iron minerals now considered uneconomic.The Bureau of Mines has undertaken to restudy iron-ore reserves of the Birmingham area to determine what tonnage and grades of mineral are present; what is necessary to make them amenable to mining; what further advancement is possible in beneficia¬tion methods; and where increased production may be obtained in the area if and when required. This study has been underway for the past 2 years, but research into the beneficiation of marginal ores has been in progress at the Southern Experiment Station for the past 30 years. Many results of that research have been adopted in commercial practice in the area. Other results have not been published but are pre¬sented here in condensed form as an important factor in assessing marginal deposits with respect to their importance as ore reserves.An interim discussion of the salient features of past history and progress, as well as the data developed during the years of research in beneficiation at this station and the present field investigation, will make for a better understanding of the present position as well as be useful in evaluating future potentialities. Discussion in this paper is confined to the main Birmingham Basin area, which contains the largest concentration of hematite ores in the district."

In 1990 the Noranda Technology Centre commenced a project to develop an interactive three-dimensional blast design system using a commercial computer-aided drafting and design package (CADD). The objective was to alleviate the blast engineer from the tedious and time consuming blast layout and design functions normally done by hand. This would allow more time for optimizing blast designs through assessing multiple options. Since several blast design software "tools" already existed at Noranda, the need arose to integrate all the applications into one overall system that shared one common database. The result is BLASTCAD.

The rapid rise of industrial Los Angeles to international prominence has been accompanied by the natural corollary - a record influx of population - together with greatly increased production and fabrication of steel and nonferrous and light metals; industrial mineral processing; and high consumption of fuel oil, gasoline, and chemicals. These have resulted in the release of hundreds of tons of metallurgical and mineral dusts, fumes, and gases into the atmosphere daily. Los Angeles County, intrinsically, is no worse than other industrial centers in respect to the generation of atmospheric contamination. It is, in fact, more fortunate in that no coal is used, and it has no great primary metallurgical industries comparable to those of Chicago and Pittsburgh. Meteorologic and topographic peculiarities of the area, however, which result in poor drainage of the polluted air away from the Los Angeles Basin, serve periodically to greatly increase the intensity and frequency of industrial smog visitations. This combination of intense industrialization, population influx, climate, and topography has made mandatory control of air pollution necessary. The nonferrous pyrometallurgical industry of Los Angeles has three rather unusual characteristics that contribute to its difficulties in developing suitable fume control: It consists of a multiplicity of relatively small establishments subject to wide Variations in products and operating schedules; operations are largely of the secondary or reclaiming nature and, therefore, often work dirty scrap metals; and, unfortunately, much of the industry is concentrated, to a considerable extent, near the center of the city. A difficulty inherent in most nonferrous foundries, including the many brass-works melting alloys containing zinc, is the high volatility of zinc and the extremely small mean particle size of the resulting zinc oxide fume.

Flotation behavior, of magnesite and dolomite pure minerals was studied separately. Rice bran oil (a source of fatty acid ) was used as a collector for both minerals . The aim of this study is to find a separating zone in the flotation of these pure minerals to be used in the separation of their mixture. Factors affecting the flotation process, such as pH and collector, were studied. It was found that magnesite can be separated, from its mixture with dolomite, in the pH range of 5-7. At this pH range flotation recovery of dolomite reaches~98% where magnesite reaches ~20% only. Besides, the effect of collector concentration on the flotation shows that the separation of magnesite from dolomite is feasible at a collector concentration of 3x10-4 M. At such concentration, dolomite recovery reaches ~98%, where magnesite reaches 25%. The differences in the flotation behavior of dolomite and magnesite were investigated by studying the adsorption isotherms of rice bran oil on magnesite and dolomite surfaces. The adsorption study indicates that while there is an excessive adsorption on dolomite surface, the adsorption density on magnesite was restricted to be lower than monolayer capacity. The adsorption behavior of dolomite and magnesite was discussed in the light of their solubility and crystal structure. It was found that due to the higher solubility of dolomite than magnesite, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions are available and more reactive on dolomite surface increasing collector adsorption. In addition, it was indicated that dolomite mineral has a crystal lattice structure more compatible to the geometry of the fatty acid carboxylic group than magnesite. However, the adsorption of collector on dolomite surface is more compact and more regular than on magnesite surface.

The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners' Circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

This publication is a revision of the first of a series of four Miners' Circulars originally prepared and issued in 19'29 for use in a course of training designed to prepare mine officials to organize men for rescue and recovery operations. These circulars were revised in 1937 and 1938 and again in 1948. This circular (Miners' Circular 33) discusses mine gases and methods for detecting them. The second of this series (Miners' Circular 34) gives instruction in Bureau of Mines methods of sampling and analysis of mine gases; the third (Miners' Circular 35) describes methods and equipment used for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures used in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in recovery operations after mine fires or mine explosions.

As the American petroleum industry surveyed its position in early 1937, it had many reasons to be optimistic concerning its future. The industry had emerged successfully from the depression, and for the first time since 1929 it had produced over one billion barrels of crude oil in a single year. The demand for gasoline and fuel oils was up, and reserves of crude petroleum and production capacity seemed adequate for the future. Although production of crude oil dropped slightly in 1938, the oil industry was still in a good position with respect to its supply of raw material, which improved economically in 1939 with the decrease of crude-oil stocks in storage above ground. However, by 1940 a threatening cloud (the invasion of France and its rapid surrender) had appeared on the horizon. This aroused Somme fears as to the industry's immediate future, and these fears were intensified the following year when the United States entered World War II. As the war progressed, more and more ships, planes, and vehicles were produced, and the problem of obtaining enough liquid fuels to supply them intensified. Hearings were held in August 1943 before a subcommittee of the Committee on Public Lands and Surveys of the 78th Congress to determine the advisability of passing legislation to promote the development of synthetic liquid fuels.

To prove to .the satisfaction of all concerned that electrolytic manganese from our low-grade domestic ores could be substituted satisfactorily for ferro-manganese made from high-grade foreign fires, an extensive series of tests was conducted in cooperation with industry, in which electrolytic manganese pro-duced by, the Bureau of Mines at its Boulder City, Nev., Station was substituted for the ordinary ferro grades in the production of ferrous and nonferrous metals and alloys and welding-rod coatings. Over 1,200,000 pounds of manganese was given out for this purpose. The objectives of the tests were accomplished, and for some purposes electrolytic manganese was shown to be superior to other grades because of its high purity. The only serious objection that can be raised against electrolytic manganese is its price, which puts it out of reach for most purposes. Even if the price were to be lowered to a point where it would be in line with ferro grades, it is questionable whether electrolytic manganese from domestic ores could supply more than a small part of the needs of American industry because of the large volume of domestic ore that would have to be processed to supply a satisfactory feed for the electrolytic process.
