The theme of this Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is in the form of a question: `Adding Value to our Resources - Our Future?' There are two ways of looking at this question. The first is to assume that any mineral or energy resource is worthless until it is identified, recovered and put on the market. In this sense all our current operations, be they open cut coal mines or aluminium smelters, are engaged in adding value. The question then becomes: what is the future of the minerals and energy resource industries with which we are familiar - will they grow or contract? The second way is to emphasis the value-adding aspect. The question is now one of whether or not our future depends on adding further value to resources we are currently selling.

Rare earths are a critical minor constituent of many advanced materials that are essential inputs to the manufacture of items such as mobile telephones, computers, televisions and autocatalysts. Although rare earths have a relatively high unit value, the impact of this cost has little, if any, impact on the selling price of the final item. Furthermore, as they are generally present in minute concentrations they are not recycled. It is for these reasons that rare earths are considered strategic materials. China dominates the market as it supplies over 85 per cent of world demand. It has recently taken steps to increase prices through the restriction of exports and support for minimum prices by an association of the major producers. This paper provides an overview of future opportunities for Australia in the context of the current dynamics of world supply and demand.

In a large scale mining project, the global feasibility study must take into account the interdependence of three sub systems: the geological subsystem, represented by the orebody model; the technological subsystem, consisting .of mining and ore dressing models; and the economic subsystem, including the selling price of final product, production costs and investments. In cases where the ore is heterogeneous, the interdependence between geological and technological subsystems may be assessed by a Data Analysis technique such as Correspondence Analysis (CA). This technique was applied by David and Dagbert (1975) on examples of data from geochemistry and geology. In the approach used in this paper, CA is used to create the basic framework for defining different types of ore. The final definitions of ore types take into account the mi¬ning method and the results of applying beneficiation processes to the ore.

Helium shipments for 1965 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 16th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines helium plants were 698.6 million cubic feet, 2 about 4.7 percent more than in 1964. Production at Bureau of Mines plants totaled 757.4 million cubic feet, and an additional 3,549.6 million cubic feet was produced by private companies participating in the helium conservation program and purchased by the Bureau of Mines and stored underground for future use. The Bureau of Mines continued to sell helium at $35 per thousand cubic feet, the price established in 1961. Production and sales of helium increased from the one private plant operating entirely outside the Government's helium program. A second private plant was virtually complete at yearend, although actual production had not commenced.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart" operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. This paper describes the use of Internet technologies with plant data. Examples are drawn from existing industrial sites. Users must project where this technology will lead - standing still is the most dangerous philosophy and the only one guaranteed to be obsolete. These examples show the way to leverage existing workers with information technology.

"The Voisey’s Bay mill processes a high-grade pentlandite and chalcopyrite ore in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. From 1994 to 1997, circuit development focused on making a 14% nickel concentrate. When flowsheet development resumed in 2001, the target grade was raised to 20% ni. initially triethylene tetramine and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in a lime circuit, but by recycling process water and the contained thiosalts, the required nickel grade was made without depressants. construction of the mill was fast-tracked, with start-up in september 2005. ramp-up was faster than other recent nickel installations, with tonnage being limited by concentrate dewatering due to higher-thanexpected ore grades.RÉSUMÉ l’usine de traitement de Voisey’s Bay traite un minerai à teneur élevée en pentlandite et chalcopyrite dans une matrice formée surtout de pyrrhotite/troïlite. By the end of 1995, the ovoid had been well explored, and at that time was thought to have a reserve of at least 30 million tonnes (Mt), with an average grade of 2.83% ni and 2.0% cu (naldrett, singh, Krstic, & li, 2000). Drilling to the east of the ovoid indicated the presence of significant mineralization. in June 1995, inco limited bought a 25% share in the Voisey’s Bay nickel company (VBnc), which was a subsidiary holding company set up by Diamond Fields. inco also bought 8% of Diamond Fields and negotiated the right to sell all the nickel produced from VBnc for 20 years as part of this agreement. in april 1996, inco bought Diamond Fields and acquired the remaining 75% of VBnc shares."

Great Britain has never had a basic raining law such as is in force in most foreign countries. This lack may be due to the fact that, with the exception of gold and silver, all metals or minerals belong to the owner of the surface land. Even with respect to the precious metals, gold and silver, which are not abundant in Great Britain, the right of the Crown, though still technically acknowledged, is not always insisted unon. All other metals and minerals are vested in the ground landlord, who may sell, lease, or other¬ wise convey them. The State has little to do with the mining industry except in. regulatory and judicial matters. The Government must settle controversies and provide for easements, rights of way for railroads, roads, and canals, or, in general, effect the same control that it exercises over other industries. As mining was carried on in very early times in England, of necessity a certain legal procedure came into existence, which in effect was little more than a private contract between the owner of the mineral (whether an individual or the State) and the miner. The nature of such contracts, of course, has changed radically with the changed relations between classes, as England lias developed from the feudal into the modern State. THERE was an, extensive mining and industrial exploitation of Russia, about 20 years ago, by Belgian, French and British capitalists; but the results were discouraging. It is said that the Belgian and French public together lost approximately $400,000,000, chiefly in the coal and iron industry of southern Russia. This loss is largely accounted for by the fact that most of the companies were formed, as usual in " boom " times, to sell stock; and that thorough investigations were not made. In 1906, renewed interest was taken in Russian mines, especially in those of gold and copper, and a considerable literature is growing on this subject; but as yet I have seen no account of one of the large Russian mining estates. The following notes on such property, where the conditions are so different from those in the mining regions of the United States, should be of interest This inadequate and probably somewhat inaccurate account is made up, partly from my own notes made on the ground, in the summers of 1904 and 1905, and partly from a volume on the geology and resources of the estate issued several years ago, containing surface-and mine-maps, and from a pamphlet published in 1904, giving a general account of the condition and prospects of the property. This pamphlet includes a report made by Arthur L. Pearse, a member of this Institute, in 1899. Both these books are in Russian, and were prepared by the Bogoslovsk Mining Co., which owns and operates the property. Articles in many other languages have appeared dealing with various matters connected with the estate; but I know of no other general account of it. "Coal-fired electrical power generation plants produce 56% of all the electricity in the U.S., burning approximately 860 million tons of coal annually. This results in the production of 58 million tons of fly-ash; 19 million tons of bottom ash and boiler slag, and 23 million tons of desulfurization sludge.s annually. These are a considerable disposal problem, and it would therefore be very valuable to be able to sell these residues and by-products as useful materials, rather than paying to dispose of them in landfills. However, utilization rates are currently very low, below 32% even for the most thoroughly commercialized combustion byproduct (fly-ash). This poor utilization rate is a result of the high impurity content of combustion byproducts, which makes them unsuitable for existing markets.Mineral processing techniques are useful for upgrading and utilizing combustion by-products. Fly-ash can be processed to remove unburned carbon, or utilized as a binder component in ore pelletization and agglomeration processes; bottom ash can be processed to produce certain aggregate grades; CO2 emissions can be sequestered using modified leaching techniques; and many scrubber sludge’s require processing before they can be used for producing gypsum products.The experiments described in this paper were carried out to study the application of mineral processing techniques to upgrading combustion by-products, particularly flue-gas scrubber sludge. A process was developed for upgrading unoxidized Flue-Gas Desulfurization (FGD) sludge’s by removing the primary impurity (unreacted limestone). A combination of hydrocycloning followed by froth flotation reduced the limestone concentration to as little as 1.7%, while recovering 66% of the sludge weight as a clean product. The recovered limestone was sufficiently concentrated that it could be recycled to the scrubber for more complete utilization."

New Copper Deposit in Chile. - The recent copper discovery in Chile, made jointly by U.S.-owned Empresa Minera Utah de Chile, Inc., and Getty Mining Chile), Inc., awaits the passage of Chilean legislation which is expected to govern the terms of new foreign investment in the country's mining sector. Named La Escondida, the discovery is reported to have the potential for producing 100,000 tons of refined copper per year. This compares with Chile's total refined primary copper production in 1980 of 811,000 metric tons, and to U.S. refined primary production in 1980 of 1,122,000 metric tons derived from domestic material, and 89,000 metric tons from foreign material. U.S. Firms Buy Chilean Properties. - A bid of $18.1 million, made jointly by Chevron and St. Joe Minerals Corp., won over competing bids for the purchase of the Libra and Mena gold-silver-copper deposits in northern Chile. Chevron is the lead partner and owns 70% of the venture. The two properties purchased have not been developed to any significant extent. They are located near St. Joe's El Indio gold-silver-copper mine. The venture is also looking at the possible purchase of two other mines in the area.

Data recently released indicate substantial improvement in mineral industry performance for 1984. Business plans to increase plant and equipment spending in 1984 by 14.8 percent, according to a recent survey conducted by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis (table 1). In contrast, capital spending by all industries declined 4.8 percent in 1983 and 2.3 percent in 1982. The latest estimate of planned expenditures for 1984 is $2.2 billion higher than the comparable estimate based on the survey conducted in late January and February 1984.1/ [ ] Of particular significance to the U.S. mineral industries are the 15.5-percent increase in capital spending planned by manufacturing in 1984 and the planned 18.6-percent increase in spending by durable goods manufacturing, where the largest increases are planned in the transportation equipment (26.4 percent) and electrical machinery sectors (23.5 percent). Capital expenditures in manufacturing declined in both 1982 and 1983.

Confidence in the strength of the U.S. economic recovery was considerably enhanced by third quarter 1983 profits, which showed a 12.8-percent increase over those in the second quarter (table I). Although the increases were not as great as between the first and second quarter of 1983, profits have grown each quarter since fourth quarter 1982. Both total profits and profits per unit of output increased, which the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) attributes to decreases in labor and nonlabor costs (per unit of output), as well as to moderate price increases. [ ] A number of durable goods sectors, however, continue to show profit declines, especially electrical and non-electrical machinery. Profits in the primary metal industry are still negative, but the economic picture of this industry is improving. Between the second and third quarters of 1983, capacity utilization increased somewhat in primary metal manufacturing and stone and earth mineral mining but did not change at all in metal mining. Capacity utilization in metal materials increased from 47.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 1982 to 64.2 percent in the third quarter of 1983 (table 2).

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives : 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity. Possible New U.S. Half-Dollar. - Tile George Washington Commemorative Coin Act, H.R. 3133, was introduced in the House and approved by the House Banking Committee. It would allow the minting of at least 10 million commemorative silver half-dollars the size of the same coin produced before 1965. A companion bill, S. 1228, was introduced in the Senate. "The valuation of diamond ferous deposits depends on (i) the density distribution, (ii) the size distribution of stones and (iii) the selling price structure prevailing at a particular time.In the density distribution the stochastic variable is defined as the Dumber of individual stones found per sample unit irrespective of the stone size. The density distribution is discrete and allows for barren sample units.As diamonds often occur in clusters, a Poisson mixture distribution is derived which is entirely new, as existing discrete distributions cannot represent the stone number frequencies found in nature.For the sizes of diamonds, which are measured by weight, a new compound logarithmic normal distribution is developed.Combination of (i), (H) and (iii) leads to a meaningful appraisal of diamond ferous ground expressed in monetary value per production unit of mining.Finally, confidence limits are calculated which allow for inference from sampling to recovery."

"The accurate modelling of geometallurgical data can significantly improve decision-making and help optimize mining operations. This case study compares models for predicting copper recovery from three indirect test measurements that are typically available, to avoid the cost of direct measurement of recovery. Geometallurgical data from 930 drill core samples, with an average length of 19 m, from an orebody in South America have been analysed. The data includes copper recovery and the results of three other tests: Bond mill index test; resistance to abrasion and breakage index; and semi-autogenous grinding power index test. A genetic algorithm is used to impute missing data at some locations so as to make use of all 930 samples. The distribution of the variables is modelled with D-vine copula and predictions of copper recovery are compared with those from regressions fitted by ordinary least squares and generalized least squares. The D-vine copula model had the least mean absolute error. IntroductionIn this paper we compare the use of D-vine copula, generalized least squares (GLS), and ordinary least squares (OLS) for modelling geometallurgical data from an orebody in South America. The first objective is to construct models for predicting copper recovery (Rec) from the Bond mill index test (BWi); resistance to abrasion and breakage index (A*b); and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) power index test (Spi). This involves fitting a D-vine copula and regression models fitted by OLS and GLS. The second objective is to investigate the performance of the fitted models for predicting Rec (Willmott and Matsuura 2005).Traditional resource model approaches either ignore the mineral processing characteristics of extracted tonnages or treat processing as an independent component of a mining operation. The net present value (or any other objective) can be truly optimized only by considering the mining operation as an integrated system in which net value is defined as the end-product that the company sells. This approach requires the resource model to be extended to include all relevant rock properties and processing responses."

Lead-tin solders are commonly used in electronic packaging due to their unique combination of electrical, chemical, physical, thermal and mechanical properties. Since it is known that lead and lead containing alloys cause great environmental concern and health hazards it is necessary to replace lead in solder materials. Besides the environmental concerns new technologies in electronic packaging require new and improved solders. In most cases the new solders will consist of temary or quarternary alloy systems, the main component will be tin or indium and the second element could be bismuth. silver, copper and gold and to improve certain properties a third element will be added. For a third element zinc, nickel, antimony and aluminum can be considered. This report will concentrate on solders containing zinc as an environmental safe. element.

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. The Steering Committee, supported by McKinsey, conducts briefings with a range of gold producers to share its findings and to understand producers? perspectives on an industry-funded marketing campaign. The Steering Committee is asking for your support to bring this industry-funded marketing campaign to life.

Stibnite is 76 miles east of Cascade, Idaho, which is 78 miles due north of Boise. The altitude at Stibnite is 6,500 feet, and between Cascade and Stibnite the Forest Service road crosses two summits - Big Creek at 6,800 feet and Warm Lake at 7,300 feet. The ownership of most of the Meadow Creek group of 190 claims, which is optioned by the Bradley Mining Co from the United Mercury Mines Co. may be traced back from their consolidation by the United Mercury Co. through ownership by prospectors and small promotional companies to the discovery of the Thunder Mountain district in 1900 by the Caswell brothers.
