Electrowinning U.S. 4,066,520 - Recovery of copper from copper sulfide ore. Finely divided ore concentrate is leached with moderately strong sulfurous acid to solubilize copper ions, the leach solution treated with calcium sulfite to reduce the copper ion concentration by forming copper-precipitate solids therein, the solids filtered off, and and the filter cake dewatered to obtain a slurry of copper-precipitate solids amenable to direct electrowinning of copper therefrom using a described electrolysis apparatus which utilizes high current flow with a minimum of mechanical agitation. A historical comparison of the frequency of fatal coal mining accidents occurring underground in mines of various size ranges in the United States and in member countries of the Commission of the European Communities is presented. Frequencies are normalized on hours-worked and tons-produced bases. The comparisons rely on published and confirmed data and on theory for selective treatment of data in an effort to overcome reporting differences and basic differences in the mining conditions and system employed. Trends are identified ad projections made of the effect on accident records of various industry growth patterns. Conclusions are drawn regarding the reasons for differences between the records of U.S. underground coal mines and the records of those mines in European countries.

IF New England were located in some distant and almost inaccessible region, there is no doubt that its mineral resources would have been ere this well developed and generally acknowledged, but laboring under the disadvantage of nearness, it has been neglected. Its surface, moreover, is not cut up by mountains and canons, and the remnants of many of the old ridges are extensively covered by glacial drift. Having for the past ten months been engaged in the development of a. mineral district in Southeastern Maine, I would take this opportunity to lay before the Institute sketches of results, and try to give some idea of the formations as found. The Sullivan Mining District extends from the town of Franklin, through Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsborough, from northwest to southeast, about sixteen miles. A general idea of this locality may be gathered from the map accompanying. (Fig. 1).

The disturbance of surface land to support the underground mining of coal requires several hundred acres to produce easily in excess of $1 billion in sales at a moderately sized mine over 20-30 years. Due to the recent influx of environmental legislation, these surface operations must now undergo complete reclamation upon permanent cessation of production. This reclamation procedure has become so complex that the cost of reclamation must be a major consideration in the design of a new mine. This presentation will discuss these costs as they may be methodically evaluated and surcharged as a percentage of the product price. When placed in the proper, logical perspective, it is anticipated that the obstacles involved in this process may be minimized.

Government and labor sources have speculated that exposure to diesel exhaust may have adverse health consequences. The purpose of this discussion is to analyze the merits of these statements and place them in perspective to underground mining. It would be ideal to eliminate exposure to all substances until they are proven safe. This is impossible, since nothing can be proven safe. Rather, one must extrapolate by using the best available scientific information to make reasonable judgements and decisions. It makes little sense to ensure that a mine atmosphere maintains a lower concentration of a substance than that allowed for ambient environments. Such regulations are set at more stringent levels than those tolerated in the occupational work place. However, levels of pollutants that are in excess of concentrations tolerated in the work place would not be appropriate in any environment.

A quantitative x-ray diffraction method has been developed for the analysis of alteration minerals in wallrock. Alteration data are plotted and contoured (analogous to geochemical data). Alteration trends outlined by this technique correlate closely with geochemical anomalies, and in some cases extend well beyond the perimeter of anomalous base metal values. "Monomineralic contouring," applied originally to porphyry-type mineralization, has been extended to other types of mineralization, including volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Equipment and techniques used in the quantitative measurement of alteration mineralogy are discussed.

INVESTIGATION of the methods of analyses for magnetite and ilmenite in the Otanmäki iron-titanium ore and respective mill products has resulted in certain improvements in the methods conventionally employed. The outcome of the investigations is summarized as follows: 1-Development of a diamond-drill core analyser for the determination of magnetic susceptibility of drill cores containing magnetic minerals. 2-Development of a magnetite-ilmenite analyser for pulverized products. 3-Development of a potentiometric method of chemical analysis for the determination of iron, vanadium, and titanium in succeeding steps from one test sample. 4-Proposal for a continuous and automatic magnetite assay method.

Laboratory prepared clay-quartz sand samples and fault gouge from an open pit slope undergoing plane-type failure were tested in the laboratory to determine potential mining applications of electroosmotic stabilization and to provide a better understanding of electrochemical hardening. Experiments with very low current densities and free access of electrolytes to both anode and cathode showed an increase in cohesion. Cohesion in a fault gouge increased by 9.3 to 113%, depending on location with respect to the electrodes. For this, power consumption was equivalent to 0.727 watt-hr per cu ft (25.69 watt-hr per cu m). Regions of electrochemical hardening were determined by pH and the anolyte used. Electroosmotic stabilization appears as a reasonable solution to some types of mining problems.

On July 25, the first copper ore From American Smelting & Refining Co.'s Mission open pit nine was sent into the new 15,000-tpd concentrator : three clays later, the first rail cars containing the Mission concentrate were sent north to the smelter at Hayden, Ariz. Thus two y,ears after stripping was started, Asarco's new mine, located south of Tucson. went on stream several months ahead of schedule. The plant, designed and constructed by Western Knapp Engineering Co., is expected to be operating at full capacity about September 1. with present plans calling for the copper concentrate from Mission to be shipped to Asarco's smelters at Hayden and El Paso.

The phenomena of concentric arrangement of minerals in rock-masses, generally known as " orbicular structure," have of late received much attention from investigators. Lawson, of the University of California,' has described the orbicular gabbro at Dehesa, San Diego county, Cal. Kessler and Hamilton, of Stanford University, working independently upon the same subject, published their descriptions,2 giving also a list of many other localities in Europe and America where orbicular rocks are found, adding copious references to the literature of the subject.

Data are presented which show that fractions of varying densities from the same coals are oxidized at different rates by nitric acid. From oxidation data, the approximate quantity of "bright" and "dull" components may be calculated.
