IT is a well-known fact that the solubility of zinc compounds decreases when these compounds are roasted in contact with iron compounds, but descriptions of tests to quantitatively express the fact have not appeared in the literature. Possibly such an expression cannot be uniformly and exactly duplicated by different operators because of the variation in the personal equation. In a general way, however, the reactions between zinc compounds and iron compounds under roasting conditions will show a certain trend with changing conditions and the approximate quantitative expression of this trend appears reasonably well established by experimental work conducted for this purpose.

ANALYTICAL calculations have been carried out on the effect of casing perforations on the productivity of wells, and formulas have been derived for general types of perforation patterns. The numerical calculations, however, show that the resultant well productivity is essentially independent of the perforation pattern, but is determined mainly by the total perforation density. Thus, for example, for a density of three perforations per foot of casing, the well productivity will be cut to one third of that of the uncased well for a perforation radius of 1/3 in., and to approximately one half for a perforation radius of 1/4 in,, regardless of the detailed manner in which the perforations are distributed over the casing surface. The analytical theory is also extended to include wells completed with slotted liners. It is shown that the reduction in productivity due to such liners will be relatively small as compared with that due to perforated casings.

The laws of crystallization, when unmodified by extrinsic causes, should produce forms of exact geometrical symmetry, the angles being not only equal, but also the homologous faces of crystals and the dimensions in the directions of like axes. This symmetry is, however, so uncommon that it can hardly be considered other than an ideal perfection. The various possible kinds of symmetry, and the relation of this ideal geometrical symmetry to the actual crystallographic symmetry, have been discussed in Arts. 14 and 18 et seq. Crystals are very generally distorted, and often the fundamental forms are so completely disguised that an intimate familiarity with the possible irregularities is required in order to unravel their complexities. Even the angles may occasionally vary rather widely.

Observing in the Engineering and Mining Journal, of January 16th, 1875, page 35, a report of a brief discussion upon the nature and origin .of this unique and interesting coal, I take the liberty— on thus finding it a subject of interest to members of the Institute, and especially as my name came into this discussion—to cornmunicate some results which may serve at least to overthrow certain erroneous ideas that have prevailed. While I would not claim to -have made much approach to an understanding of this mineral—the whole of what I call Apozoic Mineralogy being as yet dark and almost unknown ground—yet I believe I have shown that few minerals of such importance and abundance, and so long before the world, have been so singularly misunderstood. On first examination of a sample of the substance to which the name of carbonite has been given, my surprise was not small, at failing to recognize in it one individual characteristic of true coke; neither the hardness, lustre, color, streak, porosity, sonorosity, structure, fracture, nor any of the so-called "pyrognostic" characters. Indeed, comparison with any coke, or variety or modification thereof, seemed altogether fantastic. Therefore the controversy regarding supposed trap dykes, whose existence at the locality is denied by some, seems useless, as we have no question of a natural coking, there having been no coking at all.

Five sulfide minerals from the Magmont mine, southeast Missouri were sampled for 31 trace elements in over 300 samples by laser microprobe spectrographic analysis of polished sections. The concentration of several trace elements shows a pattern of progressive variation with depth (space) and variation with different paragenetic stages (time) of each mineral. Factor analysis of the geochemical data shows sympathetic correlation both in space and in time of Bi, Cd, Ge, and Sn in galena and sphalerite, and Ni and Co in sphalerite and marcasite.

The coal procedures described in this paper address the problems building a body of coal data that is accurate, precise, readily available, and easy to manipulate. The system is a set of interactive computer procedures consisting of a) data gathering (core hole and geophysical logs, their location, elevation, etc.) and standardized computer printouts, b) the graphic outputs of coded logs (log strips-scale variable) wing on-line electrostatic plotter, c) determination of seam continuity via relative movements of the log strips on an interactive graphic display terminal, d) calculation of the seam parameters (minable seam thickness, volume of non-coal material in the seam, ash and sulfur content of the raw or prepared product, roof and floor characteristics and other attributes relevant to mining), e) posting of seam parameters wing on-line drum plotter controlled by a microprocessor on-line to the minicomputer (PDP- 11).

A tunnel boring machine has potential use in al- most any type of mining where the access shaft (or adit) is large enough or can be made large enough for its initial entry and where the orebody is of sufficient size to warrant its use. Some time will inevitably be lost in negotiating curves or making lateral moves and moving from level to level. Nevertheless, if the orebody is sufficiently large, advance scheduling can minimize the lost time encountered in such moves. Ideally, a mine will be planned for the use of these machines, thus eliminating access and transport problems. From the viewpoint of time involved, the rate of advance by boring as compared to conventional means is worthy of review. For instance, the Blanco Tunnel, one section of the Bureau of Reclamation's San Juan-Chama Project in southern Colorado, was bored in competent sedimentary rock with the following performance:

With stepped-up work in rock mechanics, more and more data on strength and elastic properties of rocks has become available. Results of measurements of tensile strength, in addition to determinations of compressive strength, allow us to deter- mine, even if only in an approximate way, the third property influencing failure of a brittle material: shear strength. It is fairly generally agreed upon in rock mechanics, in drilling and blasting research, that Mohr's theory provides an acceptable method for explaining the failure of a brittle material. Mohr states that a material may fail either 1) through plastic slip when shearing stress Y in the planes of slips has reached a limiting value (which in general depends on the normal stress, X, acting normal to the surface), or 2) when the largest normal tensile stress has reached a limiting value. The mode of failure depends upon which of the two stresses is the smaller.

QUANTITATIVE methods were used to good effect in the earliest days of metallography1-3 but they mysteriously passed into virtual disuse until the important paper4 by Howard and Cohen in 1947. Various devices for the measurements of integrated linear intercepts have been constructed, primarily by petrographers. The hydraulically operated stage designed by the writer5 was satisfactory, but prolonged use caused air bubbles to become entrapped, which introduced back-lash. A new stage has been constructed which avoids this defect and provides better integration when measuring directional structures. This utilizes a circular traverse, and integration is achieved by counting electrical pulses produced by a photocell and a light chopper.* The stage is shown diagramatically in Fig. 1 and in photograph, Fig. 2. It is of simple construction. Mounted on a plate with clamps to fit the stage of a standard metallurgical microscope is a worm and 100-tooth worm gear, the latter supporting the specimen to be measured. THE observations presented in this paper were recorded during a study of the spheroidizing process. Spheroidization of cementite in steel is either brought about to develop a set of desirable mechanical properties or is an incidental result of mechanical and heat-treating manipulations. Physical properties of steel are materially influenced by the state of the cementite. Conversion of cementite from the lamellar to the spheroidal state is usually accom-panied by a decrease of hardness and of strength and by an increase in ductility. The spheroidized structure is usually considered as an ultimate step in the process of the softening of steel. The unorthodox hardening of a 3.5 per cent Ni steel (SAE No. 2330) after a heat-treatment that previously proved entirely suitable for a complete spheroidization of cementite in carbon steels led to the observa-tions that constitute the subject of the present paper.

Often, as viewed by the public and many in the mining industry, abandoned limestone and gypsum quarries offer a simple, economic solution to the twofold problem of solid-waste disposal and land reclamation. In a state where about 75% of the existing quarries are in hydrologic connection with carbonate aquifiers the rationale for considering the storage of solid waste in them must be critically examined. Consistent with the requirements of water resources protection, criteria are suggested to evaluate the potentiality of using abandoned limestone and gypsum quarries as sanitary landfill sites.

A school grows big only as its usefulness increases and it will shrink rapidly if inefficient. Usefulness must be recorded in terms of service within the economic structure of the Commonwealth. Under this premise, modern mineral industries colleges must recognize and give equal significance to three interrelated, interdependent functions of service: namely, (1) resident instruction, on both the undergraduate and graduate levels; (2) research under an experiment station plan; and (3) extension training under three classifications, class instruction, correspondence instruction, and informal instruction. To train potential leaders for the mineral kingdom, to discover and teach new truths is only half of the job. Through extension training, equal attention must be given to the on-job, vocational-technical, upgrading of skilled workers on the production line. Similar to the School of Agriculture, the School of Mineral Industries is the only one in the Commonwealth offering the three functions of service in each of the subject-matter fields in mineral arts and sciences. The functions of service must be based on the modern conception of mineral conservation (Fig. 12). Conservation of minerals differs from conservation of natural resources in general because man must find new mineral deposits and excel the geologic forces of nature in processes of concentration. THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civiliza-tion as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the GEORGIA PRODUCTION UNITED STATES PRODUCTION IMPORTS Fig. 1.-KAOLIN PRODUCTION AND IMPORTS. commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported.

Summary This paper reviews the developments in uranium process technology as a result of modern trends in the design of ion exchange equipment. The operation of the Cloete-Streat fluidised bed contactor is described and pilot-plant development of this contactor for uranium slurry work at Imperial College is outlined. The properties of a suitable ion exchange resin for slurry treatment are discussed, together with a description of relevant rheological properties of ore suspensions. A prediction of ion exchange resin- slurry behaviour is presented in order to establish the feasible operating limits for this type of R-I-P contactor.

A large amount of time has been devoted to the microscopical study of the copper-zinc alloys, emphasis naturally being placed upon the commercially important alloys of the system. Suitable methods are available for microscopically recognizing the two phases richest in copper, but none appear to have been developed for the positive identification of the other phases. This is, however, accomplished, for the phases normally encountered, by an electrolytic method described in the following pages. Five phases of the copper-zinc diagram (Fig. I) are considered for the purpose of this paper: the solid solution of zinc in copper, alpha (a); the intermediate phases, beta (ß), gamma (?), and epsilon (e); and the solid solution of copper in zinc, eta (11). In spherical agglomeration in water, the pattern of the growth behaviour of agglomerates is essentially determined by the surface chemical properties of the particles and the oil-water interface. When particles are suitably hydrophobic and oil-water interfacial tension is not too low under an adequate condition for agglomeration, large agglomerates are formed in the initial stage and micro- agglomerates do not appear. When particles are poorly wetted by oil and the interfacial tension is low, initially micro-agglomerates are formed and, after certain aging time, they grow to large agglomerates in a relatively short time without formation of intermediate size agglomerates. Under adequate conditions, the amount of oil and power input do not produce any remarkable effect on the pattern of growth.

A microcrack process zone is frequently suggested to accompany macrofractures in rock and play an important role in the resistance to fracture propagation. Attenuation of surface waves propagating through mode I fractures in wedge-loaded double-cantilever beam specimens of Westerly granite has been recorded in an attempt to characterize the structure of the fracture process zone. The ultrasonic measurements do not support the generally accepted model of a macroscopic fracture that incrementally propagates with the accompaniment of a cloud of microcracks. Instead, fractures in Westerly granite appear to form as gradually separating surfaces within a zone having a width of a few millimeters and a length of several tens of millimeters. A fracture process zone of this size would necessitate the use of meter-sized specimens in order for linear elastic fracture mechanics to be applicable.

Hole deviation has great consequences on mining economy, especially for long hole drilling technique. First of all the bore hole datas are concerned but also such factors as development, loss of ore and waste rock dilution are influenced. Hole deviation for sublevel open stoping is illustrated with examples from some mines. The deviations are indicated as mean values but also as standard deviation values, owing to their statistical distribution. The economic influence of the hole deviation is especially studied for steep, small lowgrade orebodies, mined with big hole blasting. Hole deviation can thus influence costs up to US$ 3-4 per ton for operating, development, losses of ore and rock waste dilution. This cost is of the same magnitude as the total operating costs for many sublevel stoping mines. The economic savings in accurate drilling are therefore substantial and are worth all attention.
