EXACT information as to performance of the gas lift from the mechanical engineering standpoint is hard to obtain. Several hundred wells are now producing in California fields by means of the gas lift, and a survey of results shows that the gas lift has increased production at these wells by approximately 60 percent. Similar or even larger figures describe results in Mid-Continent fields. Such an increase in output of oil is so satisfactory, to the average oil producer, that it may not encourage investigation looking to more efficient operation. The cost of lifting oil by compressed gas varies from 3 c. to 15 c. per bbl. of oil, depending upon the efficiency of the gas lift. A difference of 10 c. or 12 c. per bbl. of oil is immediately noticed by an oil operator and the cost in production is as real to him as is the price of his product. Therefore, the efficiency of gas-lift process deserves more consideration than it has been given in some quarters. It has been found that there is a wide variation between different operators and at different wells in the amount of gas used per barrel of oil lifted. Some of the most efficient operations show oil being lifted with only slightly over 400 cu. ft. of gas per bbl. of oil.1 On the other hand, wells are being flowed and using as high as 3000 cu. ft. per bbl. of oil. The cost of compressing gas to 300 or 400 lb. varies from 3 c. to 5 c. per 1000 cu. ft. of free gas. This figure has been obtained from a number of sources and as a matter of fact is the basis of actual business transactions involving gas compression. The cost of lifting oil with compressed gas is thus determined.

The South American porphyry copper province includes most of the Andean orogen, excepting the tin province of Bolivia. Porphyry coppers have not been commonly found within the tin belt, though copper-tin deposits in San Rafael, Peru and copper-tungsten deposits in Llamuco, Chile, are known. James" shows the depth to the Moho to appreciably thicken where the tin belt exists, but disclaims any genetic significance from this coincidence. Table I gives some of the most important porphyry copper deposits explored to date, but does not include Antaminas, Peru, nor a number of other large skarn deposits associated with intrusions. V. D. Perry* points out that porphyry copper mineralization does occur to some extent in the intrusion associated with many of these skarn deposits. Also not included are the suspected possible porphyry type occurrences, such as, for example, quartz-sericitically altered lower levels of the Casapalca mine, Peru. Many deposits not well enough documented to list in a summary paper are also excluded. Should anyone care to tabulate all other large copper de- posits in South America, they could demonstrate that a tremendous potential awaits the proper political and economic climate in the future.

Until recently, probably the best means of sampling airborne dusts has been the impinger method. Dust-laden air is drawn into a sampling tube, and the particulate matters separated from the air and collected in the liquid in the impinger. A sample of the suspension is prepared on a slide and counted through a projection microscope. This method is simple and reliable, but it does suffer drawbacks. Since the collected particles must be counted visually, results of the dust count are taken. This seriously impedes studying the effectiveness of dust inhibitors, such as water sprays, or making adjustments in equipment. Greatest disadvantage of all, however, is the tedious task of counting particles in the sample. With the growing desirability of taking more samples, the effort involved in making these counts is a real factor in the cost of dust control. Finally, it is generally recognized that impinger dust counts can be related to health hazard only for specific kinds of dust and under similar conditions. This is because the rather complex mechanism of dust damage depends so much on size distribution of the dust. Counts determined by impinger samples cover a limited size range that does not necessarily correlate with retention by the lungs and upper respiratory tract.

A CONSIDERABLE interest in the subject of superlattices has been mani-fested by many papers and reviews that have recently appeared, both in physical and metallurgical publications. This interest is due largely to the apparent simplicity of the ordering process, which permits the explana-tion of many phenomena on the basis of elementary theory. Moreover, ordering may cause important changes in the physical properties of alloys. In this paper, we shall discuss the causes of superlattices in terms of simple properties of the elements that give rise to them, together with a series of experiments performed to test our conclusions. Evidence is presented that in some cases the process of ordering is more complex than might be supposed. While the different species of atoms are usually found in random posi-tions in alloy lattices, in some cases unlike atoms tend to be nearest neighbors. Bethe'st "order of neighbors" is a statistical measure of this tendency. At suitable compositions it is possible for atoms in large regions to be regularly arranged, which causes superlattice lines to appear in X-ray diffraction patterns. Bragg and Williams2 have dealt with this "long-distance order" in their fundamental work on superlattices. Excellent discussions of superlattices are to be found in current reviews.3,4

THE purpose of this paper is to invite attention away from the obvious, direct monetary costs of oil-field overdevelopment (as dis-tinguished from "social costs") to a consideration of the role played by the exercise of freedom to create even allegedly excessive1 plant facilities in contributing to the maintenance of equilibrium in the whole economy and in promoting material progress. The obvious and most commonly discussed effect of overdevelop-ment of oil fields is illustrated by the allegation that already the excessive development of the East Texas field has cost upward of $162,000,000;2 in other words, the drilling of 12,500 wells more than the number esti-mated as the requirement for economical recovery of the reserve has unnecessarily raised the total cost of development that amount. Many other illustrations of so-called excessive development of oil pools could be presented. Some of them, like Cushing, Powell and Long Beach, might be drawn from the era antedating widespread discussion in the trade of such matters as optimum well spacing, reservoir energy, the conservation rate of depletion of reserves, etc. Numerous other cases can be found in the records of the current era, which began with the introduction of rationalized restriction of production. Besides East Texas, there may be mentioned Oklahoma City, Centralia and, more recently, the town-lot development of Bloomingdale, Michigan.

MarTENSITIC a has been observed to form spontaneously from the retained ß phase during the preparation of thin foil specimens of metastable Ti-Cr alloys containing from 6.9 to 20 wt pet Cr. Similar spontaneous martensite reactions have been reported in thin foils of 0 brass' and other alloys.2 4 The absence of retained austenite in iron-based alloys has also been attributed to spontaneous decomposition during thinning.5 The present work indicates that a unique situation occurs during which the spontaneous transformation takes place when the transitional ? phase is present in the as-quenched or partially aged ß phase. Alloys containing 6.9, 7.0, 8.0, 12.0, and 20.0 wt pet Cr were prepared by the levitation melting of "io-chrome" chromium and iodide titanium. The 0.5-in.-diam ingots were vacuum-annealed at 1000oC, and wafers 0.020 in. thick were then cut from the ingots. These wafers were wrapped in molybdenum foil, encapsulated in Vycor under a reduced pressure of purified helium, and then held for 30 min at 1000°C. The specimens were quenched in water to retain the metastable high-temperature ß phase. The quenched alloys were thinned by mechanical grinding to about 0.005 in. thick, then electropolished in a solution of 300 ml methyl alcohol, 175 ml n-butyl alcohol, and 30 ml perchloric acid at a temperature of -40°C. Needle specimens 0.005 to 0.010 in. diam were taken from each ingot and heat-treated with the foil specimens. PRODUCTION of magnesium metal in the United States during the past decade has increased from less than 600,000 lb. in 1928 to more than 4,800,000 lb. in 1938.1 The growing industry has stimulated interest in methods of production and in sources of raw material. All of the present domestic production is from brines. However, the availability of large tonnages of magnesite in the state of Washington, together with the possibility of cheap power, have created interest in the utilization of magnesite for the production of magnesium metal as well as for other purposes. Magnesite, the carbonate of magnesium (MgC03), usually is associated with lime-stone (CaCO3) and dolomite (MgC03 CaCO3). It occurs in crystalline and microcrystalline (sometimes termed amor-phous) forms.2 The more common crystal-line mineral is found in various shades of white, gray, yellow and brown, the colors being due to impurities, chiefly iron. Magnesite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. It forms rhombohedral crystals in the hexagonal system, having a vitreous, pearly luster. The quarries and mines of the Northwest Magnesite Co. near Chewelah, Wash., are large producers of magnesite for refractories.

With the increasing emphasis on using American fossil fuel resources, more facilities are evaluating coal conversion. In addition, those facilities now using coal are considering better coal storage procedures to minimize negative environmental impacts. For example, rainfall and snowmelt on a coal pile produce a drainage stream high in acidity, suspended and dissolved solids, iron, sulfate, and trace metals. Usually, the characteristics of the runoff stream do not allow for direct discharge to streams and lakes. Detention in a holding pond and pH adjustment are traditional methods of treating coal pile runoff before discharge. Historically, this treatment methodology has been performed inefficiently without a good data base to assess how much runoff treatment is needed to meet effluent guidelines. A model was developed to simulate runoff volume and pollutant loadings under different rainfall conditions. This model will be used to size and design treatment works for coal pile drainage. The Ohio State University (OSU) version of the Stanford watershed model was selected as the base model. The OSU model simulates overland runoff in a rural area. It includes factors such as soil moisture, depression storage, infiltration, and flow to a ground water reservoir. TRC also used the OSU co-model for acid production in coal refuse piles as the basis for qualitative modeling work. A number of modifications were made to the OSU models to make them applicable to coal storage piles. The physical/chemical reactions included in the models are described in more detail in the project report. In addition, the models were altered so that a standard NOAA magnetic tape of historical meteorological data can be used as data input instead of requiring the user to create a data file. The resulting TRC coal pile drainage model is actually two models - a quantitative model, termed H2OTRC, and a qualitative model, TRCCOAL.

An extensive reconnaissance survey of bentonitic clays in Egypt was carried out from 1982 to 1984. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, electron microscopy, and physical property evaluations were used to identify the mineralogy and assess their industrial potential. Samples were collected from a number of localities, namely Qasr El-Sagha (Fayum), Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road (Western Desert), and Qattamia area (Eastern Desert). This paper reviews the geological occurrence, the mineralogical and chemical characteristics, and the potential utilization of these deposits.

A REFERENCE to the geological map of Alabama shows the coal- measures of that State to form three distinct fields. The Coosu, or most easterly, contains about one hundred square miles ; the Cahaba, or middle field, which is also the most southern true coal in the United States, contains about 230 square miles ; and the Warrior field, which contains in the State of Alabama some 5000 square miles, is the southern extremity of the great carboniferous deposit, which extends through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. But very little has yet been done towards developing those coal- fields, partly owing to the absence of all commercial manufacturing enterprise in the South under slavery, and partly owing to the want of capital and the disturbed condition of the South since the war. Grinding with steel media adversely affects the flotation response of galena. Electrochemical measurements, flotation tests, and AES, XPS, and STEM examinations were employed to identify interactions between galena and mild steel. Iron oxide, hydroxide, or sulfate species that formed on the galena surface upon contact with mild steel decreased its floatability, with the time of contact and aeration condition affecting the severity of the flotation depression. Parallel tests performed with an active metal, magnesium, indicated that floatability was also affected by the presence of a surface coating involving lead species.

In 1976, The Bureau of Mines developed a prototype system to sense and extinguish fires in shafts and shaft stations in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Subsequent work modified this technology to include fueling areas, spontaneous combustion zones and coal mines. This paper updates IC-8783 "In-mine Fire Tests of Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection Systems," which was published in 1978 and summarized the design and in-mine, actual fire testing of the first prototype mine shaft fire and smoke protection system. This paper also updates related work from IC-8775 "Spontaneous Oxidation and Combustion of Sulfide Ores in Underground Mines," (also published in 1978) and IC-8808 "In-mine Evaluation of Under- ground Fire and Smoke Detectors," (published in early 1979).

The effectiveness of rock bolts in resisting shear displacement along preexisting fracture surfaces or slip planes was determined in the laboratory with full-scale bolts and large-scale shear test equipment. The system variables were the type of bolt, orientation of bolt relative to shear surface, and normal pressure on the interface. Results showed that, in general, both conventional bolts and resin- grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase the shear resistance along a fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on the plane is in the order of 25 psi and when the bolt is oriented such that it tends to lengthen as the shear progresses. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented such that they lose tension as shear displacement occurs added no shear resistance since the tension drops to zero at very small shear displacements.

For a very brief description of the North Texas area and the general geological features with which it is associated, the reader is referred to the summary for 1935. As in previous years, the authors have been unable to undertakc the almost impossible task of isolating statistics for the hundreds of productive "spots" which are included within the generally productive areas of the several counties. However, pools that appear to be definitely isolated—as, for example, the Foard County production and the new pool recently developed southeast of Gainesville in Cooke County—are covered separately. During the year 1936, both routine development in proven or scmi-proven areas and exploratory drilling showed a decrease over the year 1935, there having been a total of 1453 wells drilled in the district during 1936, as compared to 1619 in 1935. It is also of interest to note that abandonments exceeded completions in 1936. Developments during 1936 While a number of local productive spots were found in Wilbarger, Archer and Wichita Counties, and numerous minor local extensions to older producing areas were developed in practically all the producing countics in the district, only two discoveries of sufficient importance to justify special mention were made. Anderson and Kerr No. 1 Bruhlmeyer, about two miles southeast of Gainesville in Cooke County, was completed in April, at a total depth of 2014 ft., for an initial production of 315 bbl. daily from a sand of Pennsylvanian (Canyon) age. Development has been rapid and the field is about drilled up. During November the 100 wells in the field averaged about 40 bbl daily. The structure appears to be a small fold associated with the northeast flank of the main uplift, which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across Cooke and Montague Counties.

The method of seismic reflection prospecting has many times been compared to sound ranging, a process that became familiar to many during the World War. According to this very simple theory, the dynamite goes off and sends out a compression wave, which meets a reflecting horizon and returns to the surface, where it is recorded and the elapsed time of its travel in the earth accurately determined. Computations are then made on the general theory that the longer the elapsed time, the greater the depth of the reflecting bed. While this serves to give an idea of the fundamental basis of the process, it suggests a simplicity that does not exist in the life history of the various waves set up by a dynamite explosion in the earth. To begin with, a seismic wave in the earth does not obey the same simple laws of propagation that apply to a sound wave in the air. The property of strength in shear possessed by solids introduces a factor that sets such waves apart from the ordinary air waves. Also, the transmission charactcristics of the earth vary widely from place to place, and a fairly accurate knowledge of the space relationships of these variations is necessary if the final results are to be understood. Probably no aspect of underground excavation is as important or as neglected as the environment. The Committee on Rapid Excavation, formed by the National Academy of Engineering to study the technological needs for "rapid" underground excavation in tunnels, shafts, and mines of the future, encountered a blank wall in attempting to evaluate environmental needs. In fact, so little quantitative information on the extent of present-day hazards is available that projection of future environmental-control demands must await more adequate assessment of current hazard levels. Further, there are not even accepted tolerance standards for many environmental conditions, such as heat, noise, and illumination. Only certain atmospheric contaminants have been satisfactorily catalogued. Any technical study, therefore, which purports to examine the state-of- the-art on underground environmental control must, in reality, settle for a cursory survey of a rather nebulous subject. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS To contend adequately with hazards in the underground environment requires some knowledge of their nature and characteristics. In this regard, it is helpful first to identify our concern: when, where, and to whom or what may environmental conditions constitute "hazards"? Table 1 summarizes considerations that are important in this regard. For the purposes of this Conference (and book), primarily directed toward the excavation process itself, the hazards of consequence occur during excavation (item A) and primarily within the excavation (item B). However, some attention must be given to external hazards as well, since these may affect excavation. The difficulty of finding new ore bodies, the complexities of patenting them when they are found, and the absence of incentive legislation for exploration have limited mining exploration in the United States mostly to the big companies. This situation, coupled with ECA spending abroad, has caused American capital to look outside our national boundaries for investment opportunities which are further made attractive by some relaxing of restrictions to gain American dollars and patronage.
