Column leach studies of a low-grade porphyry copper ore were made. The technique used involved alternating oxygen absorption and copper leach cycles. The leach solution was displayed from the column with oxygen. The volume of oxygen reacting with the ore was measured with a gas burette. The copper released as a result of exposure to oxygen was correlated with the oxygen uptake. The oxidation rate was found to be dependent on the pH of the solution wetting the particles and was markedly increased by increasing the temperature of the system. Decreasing the particle size of the sample increased the oxidation rate. A material balance on the system indicated 1 mole of oxygen yielded in excess of 1 mole of copper in solution. A discussion of the important parameters is presented and the results are related to dump leaching in general.

LUCIEN EATON, Ishpeming, Mich.-It is not the custom in the Lake Superior region, as far as I know, to employ shot-firers. Each man, or pair of men (most of the contracts are given to two men) do their own firing; each contractor keeps his powder separately. The general custom is to distribute powder (dynamite only is used) to the mines 2 days a week. The boxes, marked with the contract number and the level, are taken underground and the men take them to their working places. They are kept in boxes, which must not be nearer together than 50 ft. and are usually away from the timber roads or traveling roads. When holes have been drilled, one man usually takes down the machine, and the other man makes up the charge. He cuts the fuse, puts in the caps, etc., at a distance from the powder box. He then carries the powder charges to the working place where both men charge the hole. They do their own firing and warn others coming from any direction that the holes are being fired.

Application of rock engineering in geotechnial consulting practice considered herein is in areas of: (a) bedrock verification for foundation support, (b) bearing capacity and settlements, and (c) excavations. A routine geotechnical investigation usually provides data on depth to rock, rock classification, and rock quality. In cases of rock outcrop, such outcrops are mapped for geologic structures and rock mass description. In addition, the regional geology and the general aspects of the groundwater regime are usually known from either published literature or previous experience. The predominant technique for ground and site investigation are usually drilling and geologic reconnaissance. Other techniques involving seismic and geophysical soundings, borehole camera, and oriented cores are used by by no means routine. Performing laboratory strength and compressibility tests is often made to be considered as routine. The use of the point load test is gaining increasing use in the United States and would, perhaps, become a routine field or laboratory test due to its simplicity and, more importantly, its relatively low cost. The purpose of this paper is to describe cases where mostly routine investigation and testing were used to arrive at engineering decisions. Bearing Capacity and Settlements The allowable bearing values for foundation support on rock is usually dictated by local building codes which presumably should reflect local experience. The interpretation of the code, however, can present a problem, especially if the interpretation is made by a designer under the delusion of knowledge in rock engineering. For

The dealings between concentrated capital invested in the conduct of our various industries and the combinations of labor known as "trade union organizations," have produced not only in the United States, but abroad, many novel methods of negotiation between employers and wage-workers. The size and strength of these organizations have destroyed the personal elements formerly governing the dealings between employer and employee, and have produced various forms of trade-agreements now in more or less successful operation. The difficulty, however, has been to secure consent of both parties to an equitable agreement. For this purpose there have been devised various forms of arbitration, either compulsory under the shadow of governmental legislation, or voluntary by mutual agreement. But these have not been altogether successful from a technical stand-point, for the reason that a compromise has generally been necessary, and in an effort to reach an agreement, terms have been made which have been neither fair nor satisfactory to either of the contending parties. The Anthracite Board of Conciliation represents one of the few thoroughly successful courts for the settlement of trade-disputes, if not the only one which has yet been evolved. At the New York meeting of the Institute, April, 1907, I presented a paper entitled, The Formation and Enrichment of Ore-Bearing Veins,' in which paper I advanced the following propositions: (1) That the majority of mineralized veins are the product of expiring vulcanism; (2) that most of these veins were primarily mineralized by comparatively rich solutions in comparatively short periods of time; (3) that the solutions gained their metal-values from a comparatively rich source; (4) that there is a bary-sphere containing large amounts of the useful metals; (5) that eruptions spring from various depths and bring various kinds of magmas towards the surface; and (6) that only those eruptions which disturb the barysphere and bring a magma rich in metals sufficiently near the surface to be leached by vein-making solutions are productive of valuable ore-deposits, other eruptions producing barren veins. Ore-deposits due to magmatic segregation were not included in this general survey. As a result of considerable further study I have modified my views in some respects, while in others I feel more sure than ever of the ground taken at that time. That ore-bodies are infrequent occurrences and born of extraordinary conditions I think is now generally accepted. The theory that persisted for a time—namely, that ore-bodies were formed by the ordinary ground-water, which consists of extremely dilute solutions, derived from leaching extremely lean surface-rocks, and which must occupy enormously long periods of time in concentrating the values so leached, is, I think, now pretty generally regarded as not applicable to the great majority

Since the waste gases of the blast-furnace came to be generally utilized in heating the blast and raising steam, the gradual improvement in the economy of fuel, mainly through the nse of higher temperature in the blast, has impoverished the gases. The increased output per unit of measurement of the furnace, and the increased height of the furnace, have markedly increased the resistance to the blast, thus enormously increasing the duty required from the gases. In other words, a gas reduced in heating power by a further dilution of CO, is required to raise the temperature of the blast to 1800' Fahr., where formerly 600' was a good temperature, and at the same time to raise steam enough to drive the air into the furnace at a pressure of from four to eight pounds in coke practice, and from eight to twelve pounds in anthracite practice, and also pump at least double the water formerly used at furnaces. Hence the necessity for the employment of the best scheme for thoroughly consuming these gases with the least dilution of air, and the use of the best device for absorbing the heat prodnced for the purposes above mentioned. In a former paper before this Society the writer called attention to such improvements as had been made by his firm, by which it was claimed 1400' Fahr. could be maintained in the blast by a less consumption of gas than was required to maintain 900' when using pipe-ovens; and it would not be too much to say that 1600' Fahr. might now be written in place of the 1-400. Slope stability has now become a practical tool in the design and operation of open pits. The selection of slope angles is a critical decision that can have far-reaching effects on the accumulated cash flow and the overall profitability of a mining project. Slope failures can now be dealt with in a number of ways. Two methods - the total removal and the partial unloading of a failing zone-have been practiced for many years. However, with the refinement of monitoring techniques, open pits can now learn to live with a slide and even turn a potential loss into a gain. There are various techniques, such as presplit blasting, drainage systems, and artificial stabilization, which can be applied immediately in an existing open pit to improve the stability of the pit slopes. The technology of slope stability will play an important part in the future mining of low grade, previously marginal orebodies, which will have to be exploited if the mineral needs of the world are to be met.

A digital computer program to mathematically simulate the effect of limited changes in feed rate in the range of 80 to 95 tph on a plant-scale wet grinding circuit has been developed and tested. The circuit studied included an 8-ft-diam X 12-ft rod mill operating in open circuit and feeding two parallel 12-ft-diam x 10-ft pebble mills, each one operating in closed circuit with an 8 X 32-ft rake classifier. The simulation is an empirical one based on two sets of data collected manually from the operating circuit under what was said to be steady-state feed rates of 80 and 95 tph with all other operating variables also at steady state. The procedure is a combination of several published approaches to the modeling of grinding mills and classifiers and it is applicable to a wide range of circuits. The program permits the computing of the size distributions of all feeds and discharges of all grinding units and classifiers in the circuit for a specified feed rate. The data used in this report for demonstrating the program are unsatisfactory since the circuit was not operating under steady-state conditions when it was sampled. Consequently the circuit model parameters could not be accurately estimated. The predictive power would be greatly improved if new data were obtained under true steady-state conditions.

An official of one of the prominent iron companies of the South recently made the following statement during a discussion of the present conditions of the Southern iron business: " The trouble with us in the South has been that we have been satisfied to buy iron and coal lands, build blast-furnaces, and make pig-iron. We stopped at pig-iron, and as a result we are all poor. The South needs diversified industries, and needs to work up its raw products into articles the Southern market can use. If we had realized this sooner, some of us might now be rich." The South is awakening to this view, and in the Birmingham district alone one basic steel-mill is already in operation, and in a year's time another and much larger one will be turning out rails and shapes, with rod- and wire-mills in prospect. A basic requirement in any geomechanical investigation is the establishment of the state of stress in the rock mass. So far, qualitative determinations have been more readily obtained than quantitative ones. This is due to the fact that in order to define stress magnitudes in a rock mass it is necessary to make various basic assumptions about the physical properties and characteristics of the rock itself. The assumptions are generally that the rock is an isotropic, homogeneous solid which will behave elastically under various conditions of applied load. These assumptions are not valid. Due to the foregoing factors, the present investigation was confined to a consideration of stress directions only. Within recent years, two methods of determining stress orientations in geologic materials have been used and have received some publicity in the technical press. These are the techniques of photoelasticity and petrofabrics. The technique of using reflected polarized light for observing strains on the faces of rock samples has been described by Emery.1,2 With this technique it is possible to measure relative strains in relaxation. Absolute strain magnitudes are not attainable without the use of questionable assumptions. However, directions of strains (and thus, stresses) can be determined accurately on a point basis or on a statistical basis over the complete area of the strain gage being used. Petrofabrics, according to Friedman,3 an important geological discipline which can provide knowledge on the state of stress associated with naturally deformed rocks. THE stored energy and microhardness of a Au-Ag alloy deformed by explosive loading were measured previously as functions of shock pressure' and compared with corresponding data for drawn wires.' The difference of the two processes has been explored further by investigating the annealing behavior of explosively loaded specimens and drawn wires. Sheet specimens, 0.042 in. thick, of a Au-Ag alloy containing 82.6 wt pct Au were explosively loaded in stacks of four.3 Wires prepared from the same melt of alloy were drawn through dies.' The annealing kinetics were determined by microhardness measurements on separate specimens for each annealing temperature and time. Several values of the stored energy were measured by tin-solution calorimetry Experimental details are given elsewhere. Wires were drawn until the microhardness or stored energy equalled the corresponding values of the explosively loaded specimens as nearly as possible. Wire drawn to a true strain 7 of 0.09 had approximately the same hardness and stored energy as specimens explosively loaded to a shock pressure of 70 kbar. The microhardness of specimens

The resistance which rock bolts offer to shear movements along fracture planes and bedding planes near a mine opening has been suggested as one of the mechanisms by which bolts contribute to the support of weak rock in the roof or sidewall. That such displacements do occur is a fact fairly well known. Inspections of drill holes that have been drilled for some time often reveal that the holes have been offset at one or more points some time after drilling. Resin grouted bolts are often cited as being better able to resist shear movement in the roof because the annulus around the steel bar is filled with grout, whereas the sides of a conventional bolt will not contact the rock until a rather large shear displacement has occurred. When this project began, there were no experimental data to support or refute the above arguments. A laboratory shear test program was, therefore, devised to evaluate the effectiveness of various types of bolts in resisting shear under various conditions which exist in situ. Research reported earlier (Haas, 1976) included a theoretical analysis of a conventional bolt intersecting a shear surface, and experimental data on the shear resistance of smooth (lapped) shear surfaces, intersected at various angles by conventional and resin grouted bolts. The present paper extends the previous analysis to consider the effect of the initial roughness of the shear surface. Joint roughness is a particularly significant factor since undulations of the shear surface cause dilatation of the joint, which in turn, causes high tensile loading of a bolt intersecting the joint.

The general location of the orebodies and workings is illustrated by the vertical projection of orebodies of the district as shown in Fig. 1. The Uncle Sam, Southwest, and Czar workings have many connections to the surface through raises and extensive cracks that were caused by moving ground. These divisions are cool and are ventilated entirely by natural means. The Holbrook is ventilated partly by natural and partly by artificial ventilation, while the Spray, Gardner, Lowell; and Sacramento are ventilated entirely by mechanical means. In some of the divisions mentioned above a considerable quantity of air exhausts through shafts of adjoining properties.

The rock salt deposits of the U. S. occur in five major basins: 1) the Eastern Basin (which includes parts of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Ontario) ; 2) the Gulf Coast Basin (the northern rim of which includes parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas, while its southern rim includes parts of the Isthmus of Tehuampetic and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico), 3) the Southwestern Salt Basin (which includes parts of Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico), 4) the Williston Basin (which under- lies parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Saskatchewan), and 5) the Green River Basin (whose periphery underlies parts of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado). The greatest salt production in the U. S. is obtained from the Eastern Basin,-particularly from the areas of Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario. In 1958 the salt production from these areas amounted to 8.7 million tons or 35.3 pct of the combined total produced in the U. S. and Canada. Of the 24,286,000 tons produced by Canada and the United States, 6,443,000 tons were in the form of rock salt from dry mining, while 17,843,000 tons were produced from wells in the form of artificial brine, the result of dissolving the rock salt formation by fresh water. When the cyanide process came into general use, late in the nineteenth century, chlorination was quickly supplanted, but amalgamation yielded place more slowly, being still the major process at many plants, where it is followed by cyanidation of the tailings. The research work of the Denny brothers in South Africa' was probably the most important contribution of its time to the metallurgy of gold. By grading analyses of mill products, they pointed to the necessity of fine grinding to accomplish maximum extraction by cyanide. The work here described is merely an extension of the Dennys' method. Developing the fine-grinding principle, the steps of "crushing in solution" and of "all-sliming" were logical sequels, though both had been attempted early in the history of the cyanide process. Crushing in solution introduced certain complications in amalgamation; when "all-sliming " was adopted it was observed that the omission of amalgamation did not materially affect the total recovery. Thus the field of the older process has become much restricted, being at present confined to ores which, yielding freely to amalgamation, either are too low in grade to show an economic advantage in "all-sliming," or present chemical or other difficulties making the use of cyanide solution unadvisable during the crushing and preparation of the ore. South African ores are typical of the former class; Homestake ores are of both classes, but even in these instances the amalgamation work is being curtailed and greater burdens thrown on the cyanide plants. It is obvious that the time required for the dissolution of gold depends on the size of its particles. In an effort to determine the critical size, the following laboratory method was evolved. A standard amalgamation test2 had already been established, which involves the agitation of about 100 gm. of ore with 20 gm. of pure mercury, the latter then being separated and its gold contents determined. This method was applied directly to certain mill products with interesting results, a few of which may be noted here. The column "Free Gold" gives the value per ton thus amalgamated, as against the " Total Gold " determined by fire assay.

Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates five under- ground mines and one open pit on the rim of the Sudbury basin. In 1962, the total underground ore production was over 10 million tons which was mined mainly by blasthole and caving methods with the remainder by cut-and-fill, square set and undercut-and-fill techniques. Because of the large expenditures required annually for explosives, a great deal of study has been devoted toward cost reduction in this field. The large saving effected by ammonium nitrate-fuel oil combination at the open pits, along with reports of its success in underground mining in Sweden, generated much interest in the possibility of its use as a replacement for high explosives in the underground operations at Inco. In June, 1960, a research engineer was assigned to this project, and preliminary investigations soon indicated substantial savings and important safety advantages. The final results of the program were successful beyond any expectations and ANFO is now used exclusively in all Inco mining operations in Ontario except shaft sinking.

This paper describes an experimental method for monitoring diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a deadended drift to assess the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 32 m long and slightly downsloping, with an everage height and width of 2.4 and 8.6 m, respectively. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generate pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined.

IT has given me great pleasure to read, in the papers recently published by this Society, the discussions on the subject of Technical Education, which were developed at the joint meeting held at the Franklin Institute in June, 1876; and since it was impossible for me to be present, I desire to improve this my first opportunity of adding the weight of my testimony and experience to what has been so ably presented by others. It is a subject about which the people need to be kept agitated, that their views may expand with the demands made for a higher and more thorough education. It is the public at large, the capitalist, the manufacturer, and the laborer, who are to be benefited more or less by this elevation of the standard of our professional schools, and it is but just, therefore, that the schools should look to them for the means with which to accomplish so desirable an object. It is no doubt to the interest of a metallurgist to employ a skilled laborer who will prevent waste by properly proportioning his materials ; by regulating the supplies of air and fuel ; by arranging his plant in the most economical manner, and by disposing of his products to the greatest advantage. The engineer is benefited by selecting for an assistant a person able to determine the values of his factors of safety for the same materials in different forms and positions, avoiding expensive suits for damages and cost of reconstruction; he should be able to so locate a road as best to fulfil the requirements of a through traffic, and yet develop local industries. But I need not multiply instances to show what all will readily concede, viz.: the advantages of a theoretical education ; that was fully demonstrated at the previous special meeting, but it is still an open question whether the practical instruction should precede, accompany, or follow the theory.
