Enactment of Public Law 91-173 (Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969) has placed new responsibilities on the mining industry. The new law, aimed at eventually solving the problem of pneumoconiosis, sets new respirable dust standards at 2 mg per cu m. Techniques employed to date have been shown to lack total effectiveness in meeting the prescribed standards. Since it is possible that even the new standards will eventually have to be lowered to effectively attack the medical problem, the need for new and more reliable methods of assuring clean respirable air will intensity. This paper presents, in a preliminary manner, both the present technical capability and growth potential of cryogenic technology for supplying miners with clean breathing air. Work with two sizes of prototype supplied-air (cryogenic-liquid) respiratiors in Union Carbide's Fawn Coal mine, will be described. Other potentially fabricable systems will be discussed and a preliminary assessment made of the potential cost of introducing cryogenic air breathing systems in coal mine service.

THE sampling and estimating of, the orebodies in the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, have been made a part of the work of the geological department. The wisdom of this assignment is apparent, considering the organization of that department, the nature of, its records, and the scope of its regular work. In the first place, the district is divided into units of two or three mines each and a geologist is assigned to each group. His trips to all the working places are frequent and he follows the mining operations closely. His notes are graphic and detailed. In the office, he posts his notes on the standard maps and sections and on special maps for correlation purposes. With the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist, he recommends development work underground and watches its progress. This gives the geological department a precise knowledge of the character of each orebody. Sampling is done by one or two samplers at each mine working under a chief sampler stationed in the geological office. The chief sampler has access to all the office maps and is in frequent consultation with the geologists; his instructions to the samplers are issued with the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist. Not only is it important that the geologic information be used to direct the sampling but the reports of the samplers and the records kept by their chief are useful to the geologist, who needs them in his work of I estimating ore reserves and deciding on recommendations for development work. The sampler, moreover, is at the mine every day and makes a daily report, which keeps the geologist in close touch with 'the progress of development work. The sampler is attached to the mine office and thus comes under the jurisdiction of the operating department. In fact, any special orders prepared by the chief sampler are submitted to the general superintendent, after approval by the geological department. The mine foreman may.

The Lead Smelting works of Metallurgie Hoboken S.A. are located on the banks of the river Scheldt a few miles South of Antwerp. Lead refining began at Hoboken in 1687, when it was restricted mainly to desilverizing lead bullion from Central America. Since then, various changes have been made to develop the works into a comprehensive and integrated custom smelter and refinery. Multiple hearth roasting furnaces, down-draft sinter machines and blast furnaces of standard design are used for the treatment of "complex" lead ores and secondary materials. A lead refinery based on the Harris process, with Parkes desilverizing followed by vacuum dezincing and Kroll Betterton debismuthizing was commissioned in 1967. Facilities for the recovery of precious metals, bismuth, antimony, arsenic and sulfuric acid are available. Special problems arise from the presence of large quantities of copper in the materials treated.

The author recently proposed a technique for handling the effect of planes of weakness on failure in geologic material.1 The technique employed an "extended" Mohr's rupture envelope, on which was superimposed a generalized three dimensional stress representation. Subsequently, the method was applied to so-called two-dimensional stress states" which were in reality degenerate three-dimensional ones. Since a two-dimensional stress solution usually refers to a plane stress condition, the terminology was confusing. The distinction between a plane stress state and a degenerate three-dimensional one is shown in Fig. 1. The solution of problems involving a generalized three-dimensional stress state is greatly aided by continual reference to the basic principle that no stress components can act on a plane, oriented as is the weakness plane, which lies outside of the weakness plane's rupture enVelope.2 This is shown in Fig. 2; and if it is also remembered that the radii of the Mohr's Circles give the orientation of such a plane, solutions are easier to follow, and perform. Given: 1) Both rupture envelope for the solid and plane of weakness. 2) Existing principal stresses and orientations in space (?12, ?13) obtained from a stress analysis of the proposed structure. IN recent years, there have been a number of experiments conducted to determine the rates of heating and cooling of various sizes and shapes of steel ingots. Up to date, however,-most of the published data has dealt with small sized ingots, the largest being an 18-in. (46 cm.) cube, the data on which was presented before the Iron and Steel Institute in May, 1918, by E. F. Law. It is due to thus lack of information on the rate at which large ingots absorb heat and come to temperature that the heating- practice varies so widely in different plants. One of the questions over which there is much debate is the proper rate of heating of large ingots for forging and the time actually required for the center of a mass of steel to come to forging temperature. As a continuation of experiments described by M. E. Leeds1 and at the request of Mr. G. R. Norton of the Sizer Forge Co. and Mr. R. C. Drinker of the Emergency Fleet Corpn., the test described in this paper was carried out on a 24-in. (61 cm.) round ingot and the rate of heating and cooling determined under regular production conditions. The ingot had been partly forged at one end but, on developing a flaw, had been scrapped so that it was available for test. The size and shape of the ingot and its position in the furnace are shown in Fig. 1.

SEVERAL constructive and fundamental studies have been made in the analysis of data obtained from experiments carried on with batch ball and rod mills. The operating characteristics of ball milling in small continuous circuits have also been appraised. It is from these analyses that some of the theories of comminution have been developed. Relatively few studies of continuous rod milling have added significantly to the fundamental concepts, because seldom have they yielded sufficiently consistent results. Perhaps they have been too limited in their scope. Careful control of the variables in batch grinding is simple compared with that encountered in a continuous operation. This factor alone has discouraged many investigators. Occasionally results of systematic changes made in industrial rod mill circuits have been published, but usually the data are sketchy and are restricted because -of the unwieldiness of the equipment used. The work, in general, has not been comprehensive; nevertheless it has provided empirical relationships that have bridged the gap between postulate and practice so that by proper manipulation of formulae, a mill designer can anticipate mill size and power requirements.1-3 Although operating variables of a small continuous mill are not so easy to control as with the batch mill, with present day devices, and with careful experimental work, consistent results can be obtained.

The effect of cold work on the electrical and magnetic properties of solution-treated and aged Cu-Fe alloys was studied. The electrical resistivity of solution-treated and of aged Cu-1.7 wt pct Fe samples increased by up to 25 and 140 pct, respectively, follozcing a 55 pct reduction of area. The principle contributions to the increase of resistivity of the solution-treated and aged samfiles are examined. Measurements of the .saturation induction, coercive force, and stacking fault Probability are also reported. 1 HIS paper is the second in a series which examine the behavior of the electrical and magnetic prop- erties of Cu-Fe alloys. The first paper1 was primarily concerned with the effects of thermal treatment whereas the present paper examines the effects of cold work on solution-treated and aged Cu-Fe alloys. The effects of cold work on the transformation of the coherent fcc iron precipitate to the ferromagnetic form2 and the coercive force and remanence3 have already been described, but the unusually large increases in resistivity (up to 220 pct) which occlir with cold work have not been reported previously. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods used for alloy preparation, heat treatment, and electrical and magnetic measurements are described elsewhere.1 The specimens, initially 4-in. lengths of 0.0625-in. diam wire, were cold worked by swaging in hardened steel dies. The steel industry is facing an unprecedented challenge. I would like to point out the role that flotation technology could play in meeting this challenge by providing high quality raw materials to the steel industry. Of all the technology available to a blast furnace operator, raw material preparation is by far the most important. Raw material preparation has been a key to the success of the Japanese steel industry. The foremost proponent of better raw material preparation was Professor Joseph at Minnesota. He gave a Howe memorial lecture to the AIME audience in the early 1950s, prepared from the lecture notes that he gave in his classes. At about that time he was invited to Japan. It is ironic that the Japanese steel industry listened and made it a success. In order for our steel industry to be competitive, first we must supply high quality and uniform quality raw materials to improve the efficiencies of our blast furnaces. Where does flotation fit in to the iron ore industry then? First, as a primary means for concentrating for oxidized iron ores. Second, to touch up magnetite concentrates for the removal of the last few percent of silica. And third, in the preparation of super-concentrates for direct reduction.

PRACTICALLY all underground work on the Minnesota iron ranges is done by miners working on a so-called contract wage system. This system, while it has certain advantages over the straight day's pay or company-account method of wage payment, has serious and vital defects. In view of the scarcity and demands of labor, it is important that employers of labor scrutinize their systems of wage payments carefully, not only to save losses and trouble, due to labor disturbances, but also to secure the greatest efficiency of their workmen and reduce their operating costs. It is admitted that an adequate, just, and equitable wage is the prime factor in bringing about these benefits. The wage of labor and its method of application and payment have been, and always will be, the main factors in the unrest and dissatisfaction of labor. Not only does labor want and need an adequate wage, assuming that work is adequately performed, but it wants and is entitled to a just and equitable wage. Labor must have respect for the fairness of the wage and for the fairness of the management in the application of the wage. It is conceded that the Minnesota iron miners are now, and have been, in the main paid adequately, but the inherent defects of the so-called contract system prevent any just or equitable application of this wage to the various units of the labor body. The defects of the contract system, with its obvious inequalities, favoritisms, and injustices, are cancers in the brain of labor. Every thinking miner realizes these defects and knows just what they are; the unthinking do not realize the details of the subject, but each month they are forcibly reminded of these defects through the pay envelope. As practiced on the iron ranges, however, the so-called." contract" system is not a contract and the name is a misnomer. No true contractual obligation exists.

These springs arc situated on the south bank of the river about four miles below the City of Great Falls. In addition to the spring on the bank there are several in the bed of the river. Estimates on the flow of all these vary from 350 to 600 cubic feet per second, and as the temperature is practically constant at 53° F. throughout the year, the effect on the river water is to prevent the formation of anchor ice at the Rainbow Fails power development below, trouble of this source being in evidence every winter at the Black Eagle Falls above. Geologists claim that the water of the Giant Springs is derived from seepage through an old pre-glacial channel of the Missouri River now occupied by Sand Coulee, five miles up-stream from Great Falls. The water in this buried channel seeps through the flat-lying sandstone of the region and again unites with the present stream at the site of the springs.

ALTHOUGH the process to which I refer in this paper has been in successful operation for nearly five years, during which time it has been introduced, superseding all other processes having in view the same end, in almost every lead refinery in the country, no description of it, giving economical data, has ever appeared in print, nor has the process been known in its details to any considerable number of engineers beside those conducting it at their works. A discussion of this subject at the present time becomes especially interesting in view of a late publication in the Prussian ministerial organ for Mining and Metallurgy, by Dr. Wedding, in which the method of treating the zinc-silver-lead alloy by distillation, as finally settled upon at Tarnowitz, is very minutely and fully described. It is the more interesting, because in that article reference is made to the American method in an unfavorable light, while, at the same time, it is clear from the article itself, that the most important details of the process, besides the one that it is conducted in black-lead retorts, were not at all understood. In publishing herewith the details of our American method, one of my objects is to invite comparisons between our simple and direct process and the elaborate one at Tarnowitz. The following notes are taken from results obtained on a standard 25-ft. Hancock jig1 tested during regular operation in the Bonne Terre mill of the St. Joseph Lead Co. The object of the tests was to determine the conditions for most effective work, and the nature of products that could be made. The material treated was sized between 9-mm. and 2-mm. round-hole screens, and was constant throughout the experiments. Three products were made, concentrates from the first three hutches, middlings from the fourth and fifth, and tailing from the sixth. The middlings were crushed in one pair of Allis-Chalmers Style B, 30 by 14-in. rolls, and elevated with the original ore to the 2-mm. screens, oversize of which formed the jig feed. While this arrangement was very simple, it gave rise to undesirable crowding of the circuit. Table 1 shows tonnage and assay values of the jig feed and products at the beginning of the experiments, and brings out the excessively large amount of middlings, comprising 63.3 per cent. of the total material fed to the jig. The rolls, being heavily overloaded, did very little crushing, a screen analysis of the product showing that only 27 per cent., or 128 tons, was crushed fine enough to pass to the tables. The remaining 347 tons returned to the jig with 400 tons of original ore. At .times, this overcrowding became much worse, and the tonnage in circuit grew to enormous proportions. OBSERVERS in more than negligible number appear to believe that the achievements of engineers during the last generation have been an affliction rather than a blessing to society. Quite accurately they perceive that scientific progress and technologic advance have reduced to a fraction-often a small fraction-the amount of manual effort required to accomplish a given unit of useful work. They have seen men, as a consequence, deprived of employment in a particular industry; and this so-called technological unemployment they have denounced as inimical to the workers and consequently to the whole social order in progressive nations. To those who subscribe to this thesis the story of the Porphyry Coppers may not make palatable reading, for it is an amazing record of engineering and technologic achievement. But to those others who take the longer and broader view that economic and social progress cannot enduringly lag far behind advance in the realm of science and engineering; and that any improvement in the means and method of doing essential things eventually must make the world a better place in which to live; to these the record of the development of these great mines can- not but be a source of delight. It is an outstanding example of the advantages of mass production coupled with the fruits of scientific research and inventive genius. More, it reflects the pioneer spirit, the initiative, the self-reliance, the independence of thought and action that are traditional with the mining engineer. The tin-deposits of Durango, Mexico, have been ably described by Mr. W. R. Ingalls in a paper published in our Transactions in 1895.* While the occurrellces of tin-ore in other parts of the Republic are similar in many resperts to those in Durango, there are noteworthy local differences which, it is hoped, ma? lend interest to the present paper. The deposits examined by me in May, 1895, are found in the Serrania de Chacuaco, Municipality of Sain Alto, District of Sombrerete. The workings are situated in a range of mountains having a general northwest to southeast trend between Sombrerete and Fresnillo; the most northerly claim (La Desparranlada) being about six leagues southeast of the former town. El Refugio lies about four leagues to the southwest, and El Calabrote eight leagues to the west, of Fresnillo. The claims are from about 8425 to 8775 feet above sea-level, and from 1500 to 1800 feet above Sain Alto, the position of which town is marked in the map printed in Mr. Ingalls's paper. In order to reach the claims, one uses the carriage-road from Sain Alto to the small tin-colony of Las Cuevas; from the latter place to the mines there is only a rough mule-track. The mountain range consists of a rugged, weathered, gray granite rock, remarkable for large grains of quartz, and is flanked by masses of rhyolite and rhyolite-tuff of upper Tertiary age. The whole formation is broken up by narrow and steep willding arroyos and deep barrancas, mainly the result of denudation, and it appears to be a southeasterlj extension of the tin-bearing belt of rocks north of Durango City. The advent of larger drilling, excavation, and milling equipment is resulting in a tremendous increase in the scale and annual tonnage of open pit mining. At the present time, open pits up to 3000 ft. deep, and tailings dams and waste dumps up to 600 ft. high are being planned. One of the major problems that projects of this magnitude create is stability. Stability at open pit mining developments must be assessed for tailings dams, waste dumps, and open pit slopes in overburden soil and in rock. Soil mechanics principles are used to assess the stability for the first three. This science was developed by Dr. Karl Terzaghi in the 1920’s, and since that time the theories and principles have been tested and evaluated. This experience has resulted in the development of sound theoretical concepts, workable sampling and testing techniques, and accurate methods of analysis. Typical problems that can be analyzed include: -bearing capacity of soil under dams and waste dumps. - amount of seepage under and through dams. - stability of slopes and determination of safe slope angles for tailings dams, waste dumps, and open pits. - influence of earthquakes on stability. - influence and cost of different excavation and construction techniques. To assist in comparing engineering experience, an international soil classification system has been developed and used for several decades. In addition, many excellent text books are available outlining soil mechanics principles and techniques. A high degree of technology exists in soil mechanics. This, the mining engineer cannot afford to ignore. If soil mechanics principles had been applied, many major failures involving tailings, tailings dams, or waste dumps, such as those at Aberfan, Mufulira, Luanshya, and El Cobre would not have occurred. Tailings dams are planned in Canada that will be up to 600 ft. high. Construction procedures used in the past have paid little attention to the compaction of the shell material or to the influence of earthquakes on stability. This neglect has led to failures. While failures in low dams may not be too serious, for high dams such failures could have catastrophic results. Another major area of concern is the stability of rock slopes. Current work within the Magnetic Properties Task of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program has indicated that a relation exists between the measured bulk magnetic susceptibility and fracture and lithological characteristics of granitic cores from the Lac du Bonnet batholith in Manitoba. Susceptibility minima correspond to fractured and associated altered rock; uniform background levels coincide with unaltered, non-fractured homogeneous rock; and susceptibility maxima denote the presence of xenoliths and intervals of core containing large and coarse-grained magnetic minerals. The observed variation in bulk susceptibility is largely controlled by the gram size and the relative abundance of iron-titanium oxide minerals of which magnetite is the most important. The magnetic minerals occur as monomineralic grains of magnetite and hematite, as aggregates of magnetite and ilmenite, hematite and ilmenite and as examples of either of these two categories but exhibiting evidence of oxidation and alteration. The degree of alteration of the oxides is commensurate with the alteration of the enclosing rocks. Susceptibility minima characteristic of fractured rock reflect decreases in oxide gram size and abundance, as a result of the oxidation of magnetite to hematite and the development of titanium-rich phases. Correlations between boreholes indicate the possibility of continuous fracture zones at 80 m and 150 m from the surface and another one at a greater depth.

THERE are two essentially different types of case-hardening processes; that using a dry mixture in which the object to be case-hardened is packed and kept for the necessary time at the necessary temperature, and the "liquid" process, employing a bath of fused, salts into which the object- is immersed and which by immediate contact case-hardens the surface of the article. The Shimer process belongs to the second class, and was a war emergency invention. Of the liquid melts used as baths, the most effective and most fre¬quently used are melted potassium cyanide and melted sodium cyanide. These may be used either pure, or mixed with salts that reduce the melting point and the percentage of cyanide present. The use of these baths since 1914 has met many commercial difficulties because of the high price and frequent commercial scarcity of the cyanide salts; at present sodium cyanide has practically entirely displaced potassium cyanide. Another trouble is the danger to the workmen handling the cyanide salts, which are extremely poisonous, and the annoying and poisonous vapors or gases given off in the workshop, unless an effective system of hoods and ventilation is provided, so as to prevent the gases from the baths mixing with the air of the room. Porter W. Shimer, of Easton, Pa., has invented a substitute for the bath of melted cyanides which case-hardens with equal or greater facility and effectiveness, gives off no poisonous vapors, and costs for chemicals materially less than the cyanide costs in the previously used baths. The process has been in use over a year in a large American works and the following statement embodies the results of practical experience in the use and operation of the process. The Shinier liquid or melted bath consists of a mixture of easily fusible salts that do not possess case-hardening properties, into which is immersed fresh calcium cyanamide, which imparts to the bath case-hardening properties. THE mechanism of classification by settling pools is most simply shown in the case of batch sedimentation such as was analyzed by Oden.1 The batch model will be considered, therefore, and it will be shown that the same mechanism applies to continuous operation. Classification in Batch Settling Pools: Consider a beaker or tank of slurry containing particles so dispersed that they can settle independently of one another under the influence of gravity. Originally all particle sizes are uniformly distributed throughout the suspension. All particles start immediately to settle towards the bottom at rates determined by their size, shape, and density—among other factors. Particles reaching the bottom settle out of suspension. After some given time the slurry above the deposited solids is siphoned off or otherwise removed, leaving the deposited solids behind. The deposited solids, together with entrained and any unremoved supernatant slurry, represent the underflow of a classifier. The slurry removed represents the overflow. There is a certain separation, size of particle which during the sedimentation has just time to settle from the top surface of the slurry to the level at which underflow and overflow are parted. All particles with a faster settling rate will have dropped to below this level, no matter where in the beaker they started from originally, and therefore will be absent from the overflow. Particles with a slower settling rate will not reach this level if they started from the top of the slurry, but a portion of them,

With imperfect instruments it is impossible to make accurate surveys; the results are inaccurate maps, with their attendant consequences. The design of the writer is to describe an improved form of tripod head, and certain defects in an English transit and a miners' dial, with the method taken to remedy the defects of the transit. When the present transit superseded the surveyor's compass, there was one special objection brought against it, and with some show of reason ; namely, that the tripod of the compass with its ball and socket motion, allowed a quicker levelling-up (and, consequently, more work) than mas possible with the transit. To this objection it was replied, that the ball and socket would not allow the instrument to be levelled with the same degree of precision that could be attained with the levelling screws, and that if time was sacrificed greater accuracy was attained. Nevertheless, it is a wellknown fact that in this country, and especially in England, the compass or miners' dial holds its ground solely from its rapid adjustment. Ever since the introduction of the transit, efforts have been made to give to this instrument the same facility of levelling possessed by the compass or dial, and the same means have been tried, i. e., a ball and socket motion, since a modification of this in some form was the only method that would answer. The upper part of a transit is, however, much heavier than the corresponding parts of a compass, and, therefore, requires more binding power, which cannot be obtained with an ordinary ball and socket joint. It has been a study with instrument-makers to combine the facility of these two tripods —the quickness of the ball and socket with the steadiness and accuracy of the screws; but in all attempts in this direction the ball and socket of the compass has been literally followed, the entire stability of the instrument depending upon the friction of the ball in its socket. We give the following brief notes on early works containing some reference to mineralogy, mining, or metallurgy, to indicate the literature available to Agricola and for historical notes bearing upon the subject. References to these works in the footnotes may be most easily consulted through the personal index. GREEK AUTHORS.-Only a very limited Greek literature upon subjects allied to mining or natural science survives. The whole of the material of technical interest could be , reproduced on less than twenty of these pages. Those of most importance are : Aristotle (384-322 B.c.), Theophrastus (371-288 B.c.), Diodorus Siculus (1st Century B.c.), Strabo (64 B.c.-25 A.D.), and Dioscorides (1st Century A.D.). Aristotle, apart from occasional mineralogical or metallurgical references in De Mirabilibus, is mostly of interest as the author of the Peripatetic theory of the elements and the relation of these to the origin of stones and metals. Agricola was, to a considerable measure, a follower of this school, and their views colour much of his writings. We, however, discuss elsewhere1 at what point he departed from them. Especially in De Ortu ct Causis does he quote largely from Aristotle's Meteorologica. Physica, and De Coelo on these subjects. There is a spurious work on stones attributed to Aristotle of some interest to mineralogists. It was probably the work of some Arab early in the Middle Ages.[ ]
