Wildcat drilling for new supplies of gas and the expansion of previously discovered oil and gas pools were the principal petroleum activities in West Virginia .during 1942. Much of the new gas exploration is still uncompleted and still indecisive but various wildcats made substantial extensions to existing pools. Out of 53 wildcats drilled 27 resulted in commercial gas and 6 in commercial oil. Four of the oil discoveries also had commercial gas. No strictly new pools of oil or gas can safely be described as discovered but several scattered oil and gas wells previously drilled have been confirmed as the openers of definite pools; also, various completions closed wide gaps between apparent gas pools already discovered. The proved oil territory of the state was increased about 4850 acres and the proved gas territory about 51,000 acres. The new proved oil reserves should about balance withdrawals and the new gas may represent a substantial increase. Aside from the drilling in four rather lively pools, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable operating conditions and prices. Gas drilling also declined for reasons beyond the control of the operators. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 797 new wells were drilled, providing 119 new oil wells with 2762 bbl. of daily new production; 536 new gas wells with 1,228,501,000 CU. ft. of daily open flow: and 142 dry holes. Also... 76 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 71 bbl. and 26,034,000 cu, ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 23.21 bbl. per well per day; and the gas average was 2,270,406 CU. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 17.82 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 21.05 per cent. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the Oil ad Gas Journal as 3,492,000 bbl., as compared with 3,378,000 bbl. in 1941. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 220,000,000,000 cu. ft., as compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 207,000,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1941. General State op Industry Leasing of wildcat acreage increased considerably. The total land of all classes under lease may now exceed 5,000,000 acres. Taking into consideration completions, abandonments and corrected figures or estimates, Table I shows cumulative and late annual statistics. New Pools and Extensions Table 2 shows the principal areas of drilling activity during 1942. Various consolidations of territory, hitherto treated as separate pools, have been made. in addition to these active pools, extensive drilling was done in numerous other areas where pool boundaries can hardly be defined. The creep-rupture properties of nickel, in as-prestrained or prestrain-polygonized condition, were studied at 1300°F and 4000 psi, and also at 700°F and 26,000 psi. An improvement of strength was noted in both the as -prestrained and the prestrain-polygonized tests at each temperature. The as-prestrained tests, however, showed superior creep resistance to the prestrain-polygonized ones. From the results of X-ray and etch-pit studies, the strengthc gain was interpreted in terms of dislocation density and the stability of preformed substructures. COLD work is known to improve the strength properties of metals at low temperatures. At high temperatures, however, the strength improvement is often lost if gross structural changes, such as re-crystallization, take place prior to or during the test. Even in the absence of recrystallization, a prestrained metal may undergo structural changes— polygonization and the formation of well-defined subgrains—which importantly effect the resultant properties. The relationship between substructure and creep properties has received considerable attention in recent years. The work of wood1 indicated that the creep strength of aluminum and its alloys was closely related to the subgrain size. Hazlett and Hansen,2 and Ancker, Hazlett, and parker,3 working with nickel and nickel alloys, had shown that small amounts of prestrain at room temperature followed by a recovery anneal at 800°C (1470°F) improved the strength at both low and high temperatures. The strength gain was attributed to an increase in the number of subgrain boundaries as a result of the prestrain-polygonization treatment. More recently Coldren and Freeman4 studied the effect of substructures on the creep rate of nickel at 1550°F. Their conclusions indicated that the substructure size as measured by the number of boundaries was the factor that controlled the creep rate. In addition, the perfection of the subgrain boundary has been indicated to have an important role on the strength.' On the other hand, there are data which disagree with the above observations. Grant, Chaudhuri, Silver, and Ganow6 found no creep strength improvement by a prestraining treatment. In reviewing the role of subgrains on high-temperature creep, Shepard and Dorn7 concluded that the contribution of the subgrains to high-temperature creep strength was a minor one. Guard,8 in a recent study on poly-gonized nickel, has cast doubt on the validity of the postulate that subgrain size controls the creep rate. In the majority of the previous studies, the subgrain boundaries have been singled out as the most important factor in determining creep strength; however, there is no firm theoretical ground for the postulate that the subgrain boundaries act as effective barriers to dislocation motion.B910 Little effort has been directed toward the study of the relationship between creep strength and other structural variables, such as dislocation density, lattice strain,

THE "miracle of production." which was such an essential element in winning the European war, was nowhere more in evidence than in our Western States. In shipbuilding alone the Pacific Coast States -et a mark never before equaled, and in production of war goods of many kinds, both Rocky Mountain and Coast States accomplished more than their proportionate share if measured by population standards. This was only possible because of the building of immense new plants of many types, largely financed with Government money. Their operation has built up payrolls in the West and brought a measure of prosperity which Westerners are naturally anxious to have made permanent. A widespread doubt obtains, however, throughout the nation and even in the Western States themselves, as to whether, and if so to what extent, this may prove possible. The question has been raised as to whether the national treasury has not been raided to stock the Western ranges with a voracious breed of white elephant .

Lead single crystals have been deformed in tension over the temperature range of 4.2°K to the melting point. Changes in flow stress resulting from temperature cycling and strain rate cycling have been measured as a function of temperature for crystals of different orientations and purity. It was found that the flow stress ratio, after correcting for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus, decreased progressively with temperature above approximately 0.5Tm. The activation energy calculated from the high-temperature portion of the curve was found to be markedly higher than that of self-diffusion. For single glide crystals, the corrected flow stress showed an increase above 0.5 Tm before decreasitzg with temperature. This increase is attributed to static recovery occurrittg during temperature cycling. THE temperature dependence of the flow stress, based on temperature cycling and strain rate cycling, has been extensively investigated,' and on the basis of these results dislocation models of the work-hardening process have been proposed. In general, the flow stress is divided into two parts, ts, the short-range interaction term, which is only effective at low temperatures and which decreases with increasing temperature, and TG, the long-range stress term, which is independent of temperature after allowing for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus. The observations demonstrating that tG/µ is independent of temperature were generally carried out at low temperatures to minimize recovery effects. Several investigations have been reported on flow stress measurements at high temperatures2"5 which demonstrate that TG/µ does not remain constant at temperatures above 0.5Tm (where Tm is the melting temperature of the material in OK). Specifically, Hirsch and warrington3 carried out temperature cycling tests at two strain rates on single and polycrystalline aluminum up to 0.8 Tm and on polycrystalline copper. For aluminum they found that the flow stress ratio (the flow stress at temperature T2, divided by the flow stress at the reference temperature T1 in one temperature cycle) dropped progressively with increasing temperature above 0.5Tm. From the slopes of the high-temperature portions of the curves, they determined an activation energy for the deformation process of 1.6 ev (at best) which they considered was in agreement with the activation energy of self-diffusion, 1.35 ev. Calculations of the activation volume demonstrated that the deformation was not controlled by dislocation climb. They proposed a mechanism in which the rate-controlling process at high temperatures was due to the rate of move- ment of vacancies away from jogs, i.e., that of self-diffusion. Results of Lucke and Buhler4 on single crystals of aluminum confirmed this conclusion. They measured the critical resolved shear stress of aluminum over a wide range of temperature and strain rates. They found that the temperature dependence of the critical resolved shear stress was similar to that of the flow stress ratio, as determined by Hirsch and Warrington, and from their data calculated an activation energy for high-temperature deformation of 1.35 ev identical to that of self-diffusion. More recently Gallagher5 has carried out a detailed investigation of the temperature dependence of the flow stress ratio of copper, silver, and gold. In all cases, he found that the flow stress ratio, after adjusting for the shear modulus temperature change, drops at high temperatures. The activation energies he determined were found to be appreciably higher than the activation energy of self-diffusion of the material being considered. The flow stress ratio was found to be dependent on the orientation of the material, and, in addition, an anomalous increase in the flow stress ratio for copper, oriented for single glide, was observed above 0.5Tm. The purpose of the present investigation was to measure the critical resolved shear stress, the flow stress ratio, and the strain rate sensitivity of lead, primarily as a function of temperature. The results should indicate whether, following Lucke and Buhler, the critical resolved shear stress of lead has the same temperature dependence as the flow stress, and, following Hirsch and Warrington, whether the activation energy for high-temperature deformation in lead is the same as that of self-diffusion. Lead deforms as a normal fee material,6'7 is available in high-purity form, can readily be grown as single crystals, and, for this investigation, has the very considerable advantage of having a low melting point, 327°C. The observations of the critical resolved shear stress of lead have been published elsewhere.' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedure was essentially the same as that used in the critical resolved shear stress measurements.' Single crystals of 99.999 pct (59) and 99.9999 pct (69) lead were deformed in tension with a table-model Instron in a silicone oil bath above room temperatures and in a cooled methyl alcohol or liquid-nitrogen bath below room temperatures. The test specimens were rectangular in section, 0.65 by 0.33 cm, and had a 5-cm gage length. The specimens were grown as single crystals with tapered ends, which fitted into matched tapered grips for testing. To obtain the flow stress between two temperatures, specimens were first deformed approximately 1.0 pct at the higher temperature. William Kelly, Vulcan, Mich.:—In the northern part of Bedford county, Pa., the county immediately south of Huntingdon, the Clinton measures appear along the eastern slope of Tussey mountain near its base. The only iron-ore bed that has been worked is in the upper part of the formation. Along the mountain this seam has a dip of more than 60°. At the outcrop the ore is soft and rich, but with depth it passes often abruptly into an almost pure limestone similar to that described by Dr. Rutledge. The soft ore extends deeper in the cross-gullies than it does under the higher gound between the depressions. The slates adjoining the rich ore have been weathered, but where in juxtaposition to lean ore and limestone they are hard. The saddle-point activation energy for the nu-cleation of a pair of kinks is estimated as a function of the applied stress, the lattice constants, and the height and shape of the Peierls' hill by employing the line-energy model of a dislocation. The kinetics of disloration motion by the Peierls' mechanism are discussed and the microscopic dislocation velocities and macroscopic strain rates are formulated by the Arrkenius type of approach in terms of the activation energy for the formation of pairs of PEIERLS was the first to illustrate that a straight-dislocation line has its lowest energy when it lies in a potential valley parallel to lines of closest packing kinks. The log of the dislocation velocity is found to be approximately proportional to the log of the local applied stress. It is also shown that the low-temperature mechmical properties of several bcc metals might be explained in terms of the Peierls mechanism, good agreement being obtained between theory and experiment for the flow stress us ternperature, activation energy vs stress, and activation volume us stress curves for these metals. of atoms on the slip plane. In 1972, coal mine productivity was in steady decline and labor and maintenance costs were spiralling upward. Yet, despite this sad state of affairs, nowhere in the US at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated coal research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. It was during this period that Bethlehem Steel Corp. determined that a new approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for the company itself. After studying Bethlehem's own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, a comprehensive research package was presented to company management in late 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in the company contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

ON giving thought to the subject of this paper, my first reaction was that many and striking changes have come about as a direct result of the war. However, more careful analysis indicates that few, if any, of these changes can be wholly attributed to it. The actual situation is that all these changes were conceived and most of them at least partially executed in re- cent prewar years, it remaining the role of war to achieve results in a fraction of the time that might normally have been taken, lacking its driving impulse. The further discussion will therefore be with the premise that the individual changes have been greatly hastened rather than directly and primarily caused by any war conditions. Co-operation among copper alloy producers on production problems is agreed to be much worth while. The industry was too long noted for jealousy and secrecy as to equipment, methods, and even materials produced. Gradually, a more open and co-operative policy evolved but even just prior to the war the interchange of ideas was relatively cautious and limited. The need for a great increase in production in record time fostered a more co- operative attitude; exchange of ideas and experience concerning all phases of production increased tremendously to the benefit of the individual participants and thus the war effort, too. This more united effort has undoubtedly led to many specific improvements in process or equipment and these in turn to more rapid and economical operation than could have taken place on an each-for-himself basis.

Four oil discoveries were made in east and east central Texas during 1940, three of which represented new fields. In the Chapel Hill field, Smith County, oil was found where formerly only gas and distillate were produced. The three oil fields discovered are: Hawkins, Wood County; Pittsburg, Camp County; and Tehuacana, Limestone County. Important extensions were made to the following fields: Bazette, Navarro County; Long Lake, Anderson and Leon Counties; Cayuga, Anderson, Freestone and Henderson Counties; Opelika, Henderson County; and Talco, Titus and Franklin Counties. At the close of the year 54 oil and gas fields were producing in the district. There were 13 other fields, 11 oil and 2 gas, which have been abandoned. The East Texas field led the district in the number of completions for the year. During the year about 622 wells (oil and distillate wells included) were completed and 80 wildcats were drilled. Production and Proration During the year 170,424,685 bbl. of oil (distillate production included) were produced in the district—a decrease of 2.6 per cent from the 175,053,729 bbl. (distillate production included) during the preceding year. The district's production for the year 1938 was 182,369,484 bhl. As usual, most of the district's annual production was in the East Texas field, which produced 139,095,694 bbl. (distillate production in- cluded) during 1940, or 81.6 per cent of the total oil produced as compared with 141,333,317 bbl. (80.7 per cent) for 1939. The December estimated daily average production in the district was 424,565 bbl. The district accounted for 34.9 per cent of the state's annual production, compared to 36.7 pcr cent of the state's 1939 production. The decrease in production for 1940 may be attributed to changes made in proration schedules. Any material changes in the district's annual production may be considered for the most part as a reflection of proration-schedule changes affecting the East Texas field, since it is by far the most important field in the area. The entire state was subject to 71 shutdown days for the year; the East Texas field to 131; and the Rodessa field (Cass County, Texas, portion) to 5 days. No important changes were made in field rules and regulations during the year regarding the allocation of oil in individual fields in this district. Discoveries The Hawkins field is in southeastern Wood County in and principally north of the town of Hawkins. Development to date indicates that the field is somewhat of an elongated anticline trending slightly east of north and the proved oil area appears at this time to cover approximately 4000 acres. The oil production has been secured from the Woodbine sand, Upper Cretaceous; a considerable quantity of gas has been encountered in the Sub-Clarksville formation (Eagleford shale) in the higher part of the structure. METALLURGISTS have long recognized that the Fe3C type of carbide is not a stable phase in steel and that, given sufficient time, it will decompose with formation of graphite, at least at temperatures below about 2050°F.1 This slow graphitization has never been of much concern to users of hypoeutectoid steels, for in such steels it occurs only during prolonged exposure at elevated temperature. In 1935, Kinzel and Moore2 reported complete graphitization of the carbide of a 0.1 5 per cent carbon steel that had been in senrice for about 26,000 hr. at a temperature of about 1100° to 1200°F. In discussing this paper, both Mathews and Sauveur reported graphitization of slightly hypereutectoid steels. In an extensive investigation of graphitization of high-purity iron-carbon alloys, Wells1 produced graphite at 7o0°C. (1290°F.) in an alloy containing as little as 0.13 per cent carbon, and showed that graphite may precipitate either directly from austenite or from decomposition of Fe3C, also that the rate of graphitization tends to increase with increase of temperature, at least up to a certain point, and with the presence of graphite nuclei. Jenkins, Mellor and Jenkinson,3 studying the structural changes in carbon steels ranging from 0.17 to 1.14 per cent carbon during stress-rupture tests at elevated temperature, obsenred graphite in an aluminum-killed 0.40 per cent carbon steel after fracture in 4340 hr. under a stress of 17,900 lb. per sq. in. at 840°F. and in many of the steels after stress-rupture test at 1200°F. Unstressed samples of 0.60, 0.86 and 1.14 per cent carbon steels graphitized almost completely in 360 hr. at 1200°F., while samples of 0.90 and 1.10 per cent carbon steels were somewhat graphitized, and steels containing 0.24, 0.40 and 0.57 per cent carbon showed no sign of graphite. Their results indicate that graphite precipitates the more readily the higher the carbon content, though this tendency is influenced to some extent by deoxidation practice, and that graphitization is accelerated by plastic deformation. In a recent study of the graphitization of 0.4 and 0.6 per cent carbon steel strip, made by M. A. Hughes,4 it was found that at 1200°F. graphite appeared after 72 hr. in aluminum-killed but not in silicon-killed steel, and that the rate of graphitization was increased by slow cooling from 1600°F. and by cold-working prior to annealing. In creep tests of normalized o. I 5 per cent carbon steel killed with 2.5 lb. of aluminum per ton, at the U. S. Steel Corporation laboratory at Kearny, spheroidization and some graphitization were found after 3000 hr. at 1000°F. under a stress as low as 15m lb. per sq. inch.

The basic structural unit of all silicate minerals is a tetrahedron with a silicon atom at the center and four oxygen atoms at the corners. The oxygen-silicon distance is about 1.6 & and the oxygen-oxygen distance about 2.6 &. The different types of oxygen-silicon frameworks in the various silicates are based entirely on the combinations of the tetra-hedral oxygen-silicon groups through sharing of oxygen atoms. In recent years, infrared spectroscopy has permitted estimation of the ratio of the ionic character of the oxygen-silicon bond to be a few times that of the oxygen-carbon bond and the ratio of electro-negativity of the two bonds has also substantiated this finding. On this basis, it is generally accepted that the oxygen-silicon bond is the strongest one occurring in silicate minerals. As the oxygen-silicon ratio increases from quartz to the olivines, a greater percentage of the oxygen bonding power is available for bonding to cations other than silicon. Hence, with an increasing oxygen-silicon ratio, there is increasing oxygen-to-metal bonding. Upon the fracturing of a silicate mineral crystal, the oxygen-metal bond, which is almost entirely ionic in character, should break more easily than the stronger oxygen-silicon bond, resulting in a greater number of unsatisfied negative forces on the surface. If, then the mineral is immersed in a liquid containing hydrogen ions, these negative forces should tend to be neutralized by hydrogen ions from solution, resulting in a change of the pH of the solution. An increase in the degree of adsorption of hydrogen ions is to be expected as the oxygen-silicon ratio in the crystal structure increases. This study attempted to correlate the oxygen-silicon ratio for various representative silicate minerals to the adsorption of hydrogen ions. Experiments to determine the effect of surface area on this adsorption and to investigate the effect of surface iron were also conducted. It is believed that such studies of the surface properties of silicate minerals will supply pertinent information about their behavior in froth flotation systems. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ion Exchange: Carefully selected, hand-picked samples of the minerals investigated were dry-crushed in a ceramic ball mill and sieved to obtain a minus 100 plus 200-mesh sample. The sized samples were then run through the electro-magnetic separator to remove any iron-bearing particles. A 10-g sample of each mineral was placed in 100 ml of freshly deionized water previously adjusted to a pH of 3.50 with HCl. The beaker containing the sample and the water was placed under a bell jar from which the air was displaced at once by nitrogen gas from a tank. All experiments were carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere. The sample and solution were stirred gently but continuously during the entire experiment, the stirring speed being kept about the same for all runs. (communication to the Secretary) : Mr. Firmstone's paper is of great interest; but he has unfortunately otnitted to state the most important point, viz., the percentage of sulphur in the two materials he compares; and this omission vitiates the conclusions which he draws. Comparing by grade, instead of silicon-contents (as in his Table III.), the iron made using limestone with that made using dolomite, we find for gray-forge the average of four analyses under limestone to be, Si, 0.644; S, 0.089 ; while one analysis under dolomite gives Si, 0.508 ; S, 0.070. For No. 2 iron, the limestone flux gives, as an average of 19 analyses, Si, 1.107; S, 0.051; while the average of 4 analyses made with dolomite flux gives Si, 0.630; S, 0.056. It will be observed, that no No. 1 pig is given under limestone, while 14 analyses appear under dolomite, averaging Si, 0.950 ; S, 0.028. As nothing is said about changed conditions, it is Fair to presume that the ore and fuel, as well as the blast-temperature (which is stated to have been uniform at about 750' F.) remained practically the same; and since the sulphur in the two fluxes is not given, it is impossible to know whether the lower sulphur for equal silicon-contents is due to the use of dolomite or to other conditions. The use of dolomite would produce a more fusible cinder, and the furnace would be hotter than when using limestone; therefore, we might expect to see a grayer iron. The amount of So. 1 iron made with dolomite seems to confirm this supposition; and, under these conditions, we might expect more of the sulphur to be volatilized, and to pass off in the gases. The easier fusibility of the cinder would also permit more rapid driving; and this should reduce the amount of silicon and sulphur in the iron, as the amount of reduced metalloids in the pig is directly proportional to the length of time it remains in the reducing-zone.

IN no part of the world other than a small area in Pennsylvania is anthracite mining an industry of major magnitude. As the deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virtually to Pennsylvania, the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered a state rather than a national problem. However, there is also national interest in the conservation and wise utilization of all the country's fuel resources and in the control of interstate waterways. The anthracite industry is confronted with a serious problem of water accumulation in many of the mines, a problem that must be solved in the near future if progressively higher mining costs are to be avoided. It cannot be solved by the operating companies without state or Federal aid, or both, owing to the magnitude of the work required, the diversity of interests of the coal and surface ownerships, the hazard to the whole mining community, and interests affected outside the mining region. 'The costs of abating the ever-increasing surface seepage to mine workings and of handling this seepage once it has occurred are beyond the eco¬nomic resources of the operating managements.

THE Transactions of the Institute afford abundant evidence of the general recognition by mining engineers of the importance of a safety-lamp which will not only give warning of the presence of fire-damp, but will also indicate the proportion in which it is present.' Mining-men are only too familiar with the frequent and sudden changes that constantly occur at the working-face of a gaseous mine. Nothing illustrates more forcibly the pregnant condition of the strata enfolding the seam and the seam itself, than the fact that a circulation of perhaps 150,000 cu. ft. of air may contain 2 or even 3 per cent. of marsh-gas, representing a volume of from 3,000 to 4,000 cu. ft. of this gas pouring-out each minute from the natural strata into the mine-workings. It would, indeed, be strange if this great outflow of gas were always constant, and it creates no surprise that such earth-breathings, as they may be called, are spasmodic and irregular in their wane and flow. There are other causes that act to vary the gaseous condition of mine-air. Gas has a tendency, often very manifest in mine-workings and airways, to stratify and, at times, to travel long distances in veins or streams. It is common to catch and lose the gas in the lamp when making a test. At times two lamps, held side by side in an air current, will indicate different gaseous conditions of the passing air. When testing for gas, the lamp may suddenly fill with flame, in a mine-chamber, where a moment before a careful test showed the presence of but 1 per cent. of gas. IT is to be hoped that no casual reader will erroneously refer to the latest publication' of the Division of Public Relations of the American Petroleum Institute, as being "Petroleum Facts and Fancies." The facts are so faithfully derived and the figures are so authentically sponsored by the highest sources that no person can read this valuable volume (287 pages and numerous tables) without being convinced that every- thing therein set forth is "the truth and nothing but the truth." Yet, having read the volume from the perspective of the world's petroleum industry and with a critical attitude that comes from years of study of the subjects discussed, I find myself tempted to cogitate and to envisage a few of the fancies that come to mind as a fitting sequel.

WITHIN the past three weeks the price of crude oil in the Mid-Continent field has been cut 50 .per cent. Similar action has been taken, or probably, shortly will be taken, in most of the other fields of this country. This cut is very drastic. Is it justified? Some of the causes advanced for the cut are: that it is in line with the industrial downward readjustment now taking place throughout the country, and that there is an over-production of oil, which can best be slowed down by lowering the price of crude. In part, these two reasons are logically advanced, but such underlying causes as the great production- in Mexico have not been prominently brought forward nor the fact that it would be advantageous at this time to fill up the empty storage of many of the consuming companies at a low 'price. In order to properly comprehend the situation let us compare for a moment the production- of oil in the United' States and that in Mexico. Oil in the United States occurs in numerous often widely separated pools, varying in individual area, but each usually relatively extensive, compared to the area or gathering ground from which it is ultimately derived: It occurs in mod-erately porous reservoir rocks under such conditions of pressure, mobility and availability as to preclude its withdrawal except over a period of years-varying from 1 to at least 40 (average, say 15 years, depending on-the pool). One well will usually drain a limited area-2 to 10 acres-so that rate of withdrawal of oil under each owner's property is determined by the owner. - The important point to remember is that no matter how intensive the development, the oil reserves of -the United States cannot be materially exhausted' for at least 20 years, and the total available supply, not including shale oil, will probably require 50 to 75 years, or longer, for its withdrawal, the yearly rate of production decreasing slowly from this time on.

MAY 17-The last bit of verbal sod had hardly come to rest on the grave of the coal industry-which grave was being eagerly dug with typewriters and microphones by administration hangers-on and even an operator or two-when its leaders gathered for the 1950 Coal Convention of the AMC in Cincinnati on April 24. Surprisingly, mourning clothes were not being worn but the boys had on their diggers preparatory to digging their way out from under the muck. High costs created by wage and welfare demands, together with work stoppages, have caused markets to shrink, but even so, an optimistic air still prevailed as new techniques were disclosed at technical sessions. The administration, however, came in for its share of knocks.
