On Sept. 4, 1914, Mine No. 1 of the Union Coal Co., Adamson, Oklahoma, suddenly caved, entombing thirteen miners whose bodies were never recovered. The seam of coal mined, the Lower Hartshorne, averaged 5 ft. in thickness and dipped at an angle varying from 22" to 30n. The strata overlying the coal seam were sandstones and shales. The mine was worked by the pillar-and-room method, the rooms being driven directly up the dip of the seam. All coal was blasted off the solid. Rooms were turned on short centers and room pillars were thin and irregular, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the form; showing the mine workings. Some cracks had been observed on the surface, it is said, at least a month before the squeeze occurred, but the collapse of the mine workings came very suddenly. As is usual when squeezes occur on such steep dips and the pillars fail, the crush progressed rapidly down the dip until it reached solid coal; there was a line of break, or draw, over in the solid coal. Several well-defined cracks appeared on the surface, after the mine had squeezed, but there was no appreciable subsidence of the surface, the weight seemed to be thrown entirely to the dip. About one year after the squeeze, and after the workings of the adjoining mine, NO. 4, had been retimbered and made safe, the writer inspected the tenth north (right) entry, or lift, off of No. 4 slope, which was below and fairly near the lowest caved portion of mine No. 1. The roof shale was composed of thin layers, which had been bent in somewhat the same manner as the leaves of a book having flexible covers are bent when the book is folded or rolled up in the hands. Though the mine workings are immediately beneath the streets and buildings of the mining town of Adamson, business was not disturbed by the squeeze, so far as any subsidence of the surface was concerned. No surface monuments were available and no elevations were taken, but the mine workings had been accurately surveyed and traversed, and the streets of the town overlying the mine workings had been carefully platted on the mine map, so that it was possible to locate accurately the cracks on the surface.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to study the influence of asphalt, bentonite, and corn starch binders on the pelletization kinetics of coal fines and on the quality of the resulting pellets. Pellet quality was evaluated in term of the compression strength, impact resistance (drop test), abrasion resistance, and resistance to severe weather conditions. The amount of binder addition did not significantly influence the pellet growth kinetics. However, the pellet quality varied markedly depending upon the type and the amount of binder wed. Experimental results are explained on the basis of the mechanism of interaction between the coal particles and the binders. Of the three binders tested, corn starch proved to be the best in all respects but for the resistance to water penetration. Finally, a combination of corn starch (imparting strength) and asphalt emulsion (imparting resistance to water penetration) was found to yield the best quality coal pellets.

As one surveys the extensive taconite operations on the Mesabi Range, he may find it difficult to believe that only 15 years ago, the iron ore mining industry here was staring at its own imminent demise. Due to the high demands for iron ore during World War II the postwar period of 1946-1950, and the subsequent "police action" in Korea, there was rapid consumption of the Mesabi's already depleted ores, and some economists were giving the Range only 20-25 years of life. In the 13-year period 1941-1953, more than 850 million tons of iron ore were shipped to steel mills, an amount almost equal to the total production during the preceding 30 years. Proven ore reserves dropped from 1.1 billion tons in 1940 to 8.3 million tons in 1954, the largest decrease being recorded in the famed direct shipping ores.

As the conflict between the mineral industry and preservationists steadily increases, it becomes urgent to determine as precisely as possible the costs of developing vs. not developing our domestic mineral resources so that enlightened mineral policy decisions can be made. A simple discounted cash flow equation is suggested as an approach to assigning a public-interest dollar value to mineral resources. Present value of a piece of land underlain by a mineral resource is taken as equal to the discounted cash flow derived from the resource corrected for present and future surface land values. The equation is effective as a base for mineral aggregate resource planning for metropolitan areas if transportation cost differences are substituted into the cash flow component. Suitably modified, the equation can be fitted readily into an existing computer simulation program for aggregate mineral resource planning in metropolitan areas. However, because of the lack of accurate input, the equation is less effective for other mineral commodities such as base metals and coal. Nevertheless, within a somewhat philosophical context, the equation still has utility and is effective in defining the problem of public interest values for minerals other than mineral aggregates.

In the spring of 1935 the writers undertook to compare the geomagnetic and direct-current earth-resistivity methods of tracing a concealed dike along its strike. As far as they are aware no such direct test has been attempted.# The area surveyed lies along United States Highway number 15 about one and one-half miles east of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and northeast of Bolin Creek (Fig, 1). To the south of the highway is the flood plain of Bolin Crook, and to the north is a hill that rises almost to the elevation of Chapel Hill. A diabase dike, which strikes slightly west of north, out-crops in a. gully just south of the highway. Southward it has been covered by alluvium but northward outcrops again on the southeastern slope of the hill north of the highway. South of the highway the country rock is Triassic shale and sandstone, the northern limit of which is slightly north of the road. On the Geological Map of the United States I the pre-Triassic formations are shown as lower Glenarm and assigned a pre-Cambrian age. Since the ago of the Glenarm has been called into question in Pennsylvania 2, the writers prefer not to commit themselves as to the ago of these rocks further than to say that they are definitely pre-Triassic.

X HE recent investigation of Butler, McCabe, and paxton' on the vapor pressure of manganese gas in equilibrium with Mn-Fe alloys has been extended to include the iron-rich solutions and alloys in the two phase equilibrium region. The study of the phase equilibrium by Kurnakov and Troneva2 and the extensive reviews of the Mn-Fe system by Hansen,3 and Hellawe114 are not in agreement with regard to the location and extent of the equilibrium between the solid phases of fcc y and complex P in the temperature range above the eutectoid temperature of approximately 975Kwhere 0 decomposes to y and bcc a. An evaluation of the existing equilibrium data is confronted with the conflicting results presented by various investigators who used techniques requiring a quenching treatment to retain the high-temperature equilibrium or encountered temperature hysteresis during thermal analyses. The difficulty of suppressing the transformation of the manganese-rich concentrations of the y-solid solution during quenching has been well etablished.' To avoid this uncertainty the phase equilibrium was investigated at temperature by measuring the partial pressure of manganese gas in equilibrium

Magnetic separation occupies an attractive position in the field of ore beneficiation. It is a simple yet effective method, used for some 150 years and steadily growing more important. This type of beneficiation orginated in 1792, when William Fullarton was issued a British patent covering the separation of iron ore by magnetic attraction. What is magnetism, and why are some materials capable of being magnetized and others not? The study involves many unknowns, and even a partial answer to these questions would be a dissertation in solid state physics and perhaps other fields of science. But the last two decades have revealed basic facts as to why certain materials are magnetic and what happens to them when they are magnetized.

Belt conveying is a method of transportation that requires proper servicing and maintenance if completely economical results are to be obtained from the system. With a trucking system, it is common practice to deliver the trucks to a servicing station each day or at the end of each shift. With railroad transportation there is a similar procedure. Sufficient credit is seldom given to this periodic inspection and maintenance procedure, yet it is the key to the successful operation of trucking and rail haulage systems. How about the belt conveyor transportation system? Here is a system that requires no operator for each individual unit. It requires only a main switch and an adequate sequence interlocking system, and the system is so simple to operate that maintenance is considered as only a casual requirement-nothing is done about it until after trouble has developed.

The present work represents a review of our intestigations into the X-ray spectra of solids, which have been carried out by us along two lines of upproach: 1) St@ of the electronic structure of high -rnelting compounds of transition metals; 2) stzddy of the interatomic binding forces by the fine structure of absorption spectra under varying temperature and concentration conditions. With this in mind, int>estigations hare been made into the emission and absorption spectra of the K-series of atoms of transition elements in alloys and compounds. In the problem concerned with the electronic structure of high-melting compounds of transition metals, considerable importance is attached to the question of ascertaining the role played by 3d4sp electrons of metal and 2p electrons of metalloid in the formation of chemical bonds and of giving, on the strength of this data, an explanation of the properties which seem to be contradictory at first sight: good conductivity inherent in metals and high brittleness and high-melting characteristics typical of covalent compounds. Over the last few decades this question has attracted the attention of many investigators whose studies were devoted to this type of compound. Many works, both of theoretical1-3 and experimental4- l5 nature , have contributed much to the elucidation of the physical character of the phenomenon referred to. Alongside the investigations in the field of electric resistance, Hall effect, paramagnetic susceptibility, electronic heat capacity, and the temperature of transformation into a superconducting state, we should particularly emphasize the studies on X-ray spectra, which have played a significant role in the development of the zonal theory for high-melting compounds. This fact has become highly evident after the theoretical calculation of the energy spectrum has been made and the density of states curve in Tic, TiN, and Ti0 has been plotted by Ern and Switendick3 who used the method of augmented plane waves. Correlation of the results of the theoretical calculation of the band structure in the compounds listed above with the data obtained by X-ray spectroscopy studies showed that X-ray spectra can be a source of valuable information on the electronic structure of high-melting compounds within a wide range of ener- gies. It is well known that X-ray emission spectra basically give a direct picture of the occupied excited states above the Fermi level of a solid (valence band, conduction band) and that the absorption spectra (region of initial absorption) give a similar picture of states corresponding to the unoccupied levels near the Fermi surface. SINCE the discussion On steel rails in America has forcibly drawn attention to the value of chemical analysis, if not as a necessary stipulation, at least as a guide to control the usual mechanical tests, some doubt has been thrown upon the accuracy of the analytical results Obtained by different chemists. To any One having the least acquaintance with chemistry., it is quite clear that if exactly similar results are to be obtained from the same borings of steel, exactly the same methods must be used by the different analysts. Hence the necessity (if complications are to be avoided) of establishing what I may call standard or normal methods, to be used both by the inspectors and by the chemists at the works. Remembering that the application' of chemistry to steel-rail inspection is yet in its infancy, it is of great importance to possess a perfect acquaintance with the best methods in use. Being myself a grateful pupil of Professor Eggertz, of the School of Mines in Sweden, it Occurred to me, two. years ago, that I could not do better than start a laboratory of my. own, and engage One of his pupils, Mr. Troilius, for the purpose of analyzing the steel borings from mechanically-tested rails, so that I might thus Obtain without delay thoroughly accurate determinations. Moreover, in Order to carry on the, operations in perfect accordance with the methods used at the steel works in England and Germany, where I had to control the manufacture, I deemed it desirable to allow Mr. Troilius to go through a course of training at these works; and I gladly seize this opportunity of expressing my grateful acknowledgments to several works in England and in Germany for affording every facility for such an exchange of information as was found necessary in arriving at the best analytical methods to be used.

The fundamental reasons underlying the choicc of a method of mining a coal seam are safety of operation, cheapness of producing the coal and the character of the product as a saleable article. From the standpoint of safety, open or strip coal mining is always preferable, as many of the dangers inherent to underground work are absent, such as explosions of gas and dust, falls of roof and coal, and also to a great extent those due to haulage and the use of explosives, thus eliminating three of the chief causes of accident from which about 75 per cent. of the underground accidents in coal mines occur. The conditions under which coal is stripped also make the work much safer than ordinary quarry work, as the depth of the pit is usually comparatively small. Prom the standpoint of low mining cost, there is much misapprehension and many of the costs given are misleading in that they do not take into account such items as the destruction of the surface for future use, the full cost of the removal of the overburden, depreciation, amortization, coal depletion, loss of time through floods and from bad weather in winter, etc. Coal is no doubt often put on the cars at less cost by stripping than by underground mining, but by no means always so, as is too generally assumed. In some cases coal must be obtained by stripping or not at all, because the small amount of overburden renders underground mining impossible.

The aim of this work was the preparation of nickel-steels from elemental metal powders by powder metallurgy techniques. It was known that plain carbon steels could be made from a mixtufe of iron powder and graphite and that the effect of carbon on iron in powder form was of the same nature as that produced in fusion metallurgy. The problem in making nickel steels from elemental powders consisted therefore in finding out whether sufficient diffusion of the nickel and other incidental metals . normally present in such steels could be induced in the solid state to modify the properties of plain carbon steels made from powders and produce the beneficial effect of alloying. The composition selected originally was that of an S.A.E. 2330 steel. Metal powders, in the proportion correspending to that composition, were mixed with graphite, pressed, and heated at different temperatures for different periods of time, to produce bonding of the metal particles and mutual diffusion of the various elements without melting. Temperatures up to 1325°C and sintering periods as long as 6 hr were first investigated because it was expected.that such conditions would produce maximum diffusion with an accompanying improvement in the properties of the alloy. It was found that, although diffusion proceeded to a large extent under the conditions investigated, it would not be complete unless sintering were carried out at a high temperature for much longer than 6 hr. Relatively high temperatures and long sintering times are objectionable from a practical point of view, particularly when a low COSt material is to be produced, because they necessitate the use of special, costly equipment. Work could be done to improve the diffusion of iron and nickel by changing conditions other than the sintering temperature and time, that is, finer primary or alloy powders could be used. However, a marked change in the properties of the steel had been observed even with only partial diffusion. It was thought, therefore, that instead of trying to improve the diffusion, advantage might be taken of its incompleteness to produce a special structure consisting, in the unquenched condition, of a hard constituent, rich in nickel, dispersed in a tough pearlitic matrix. Steels with such a structure, not readily obtainable by fusion, should have desirable mechanical properties. Besides, it should be possible to prepare them from elemelltal powders under economical conditions. This latter alternative was therefore adopted for the second phase of this work. This report is divided into four parts: I. General Procedure. 2. Effect of Sintering Temperature. 3. Effect of Varying the Nickel Content. 4. Effect of Alloying Elements. General Procedure The general technique of cold pressing as used in powder metallurgy was applied.

Earlier work on a mud separator for barite recovery is extended to the design and construct ion of a rugged field unit. Problems associated with scale-up for field use include the me of dilution water and its effect on capacity, power requirements and pressures developed. Equations for these quantities are derived and applied in maximizing the beneficial effects of dilution and minimizing the power required. Tests on the full-size rotor show that its performance can be predicted by theory. The completed unit is compact and lighter than current decanting types. Its capacity is from 10 to 22 gal/min with corresponding barite recovery efficiencies of 92 to 86 per cent. INTRODUC'TION In an earlier publication a new type of centrifugal device was described for solid-liquid separations.l In that paper an operating equation was derived, and its validity demonstrated in laboratory scale experimentation. Some of the features apparent in this new device seem particularly well suited to the conservation of barite in field drilling-mud systems, hence the development was extended to the design and construction of a field unit. In the present paper the design problems associated with scale-up are considered. A full-scale, rugged self-contained field unit is described, and test results discussed which verify that the performance of the large field unit can be described by a simple operating equation. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF SEPARATOR In principle, the new device is simply a perforated cylinder rotating within a body of fluid which is contained within a stationary case, as in Fig. 1. The frictional drag generated by the rotating cylinder causes part of the fluid to rotate. At the surface of the cylinder, assuming no slip occurs, the angular velocity of fluid and of the cylinder are identical. If there are suspended particles present of greater density than the fluid, the centrifugal force acting on these particles causes them to move radially away from the cylinder at some velocity vp . Where the Stokes settling equation holds, this velocity may be expressed as:2 d2 ?p rw2 If the case is provided with openings at both ends, a suspension can be pumped in at one end at a fixed rate. Part of the suspension can then be removed at a fixed rate at the other end of the case as underflow, and the remainder forced through the perforations and hollow shaft of the rotor to appear as effluent, also at a fixed rate. The radial component of the flow velocity of this stream as it reaches the rotor surface, is simply effluent flow rate divided by cylindrical surface area: Because up is a function of particle size, for some particular particle size, the velocities vp and v, will be equal in magnitude. This is defined as the critical particle size and represents the size above which all particles appear in the underflow and below which all particles appear in the effluent. No. 425, 12,000 words.)—This paper describes a research project undertaken to provide a means of studying the behavior of weighty structures such as mines, dams, foundations, etc., with models of the same material in the laboratory. The paper shows that in general it can be done. The underlying theory is explained, the apparatus which was developed and built to do this is described, and the results of laboratory experiments with sandstone mine structures are given. There is discussion of the accuracy of results with the present equipment, the model size necessary, and of the size and type of equipment necessary for the obtaining of results of practical value in the field. Milling and Concentration Ball Mill Studies, I. By A. W. Fahrenwald and Harold E. Lee. (Tech. Pub. No. 375. 25,000 words.)—This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental study of some of the numerous elements entering into ball mill grinding. All apparatus used was equipped with ball bearings. Every experiment was accompanied by a power measurement accurate to 0.005 hp. Quartz was used. Each element studied, such as ball load, was varied systematically. Power curves were obtained for the mill for three general sets of conditions; namely, (1) balls only (2) balls and quartz and (3) balls, quartz and water. For each general condition, power curves were obtained for various mill speeds, ball loads and ball sizes. For conditions 2 and 3, feed sizc and weight and pulp dilution also were studied as variables. The mill output, in grams of finished product per unit of time, was obtained for each test. Since its first mention in the literature in the eighteenth century12 the phenomenon of passivity in metals has stimulated much speculation and attendant controversy as to its nature and cause. No one of the numerous theories so far proposed has been generally accepted. ‡ Faraday,' in 1836, associated the passivity of iron with a protective film over the surface of the metal, which materially prevents or slows down reaction with corrosive environments. His theory was that oxidizing acids like nitric acid form an unstable oxygen or oxide layer over the iron surface, which protects the underlying metal from further attack. This concept was simple yet plausible, and without alteration has frequently been assigned in present-day discussions as explanation of the passivity of many metals. With the advent in recent times of stainless steels, it is not surprising that this oxide film theory of passivity proposed by Faraday has been used to explain the phenomenal corrosion resistance of stainless steels and other passive alloys. The passive alloys, such as the chrome-iron alloys, are supposedly covered with a protective oxide film, which forms on exposure of the alloy to air, is extremely stable and self-healing, and accounts for the remarkable resistance of these alloys to corrosion. Within the past few years, several investigators, following the theory of film protection, have attempted to gauge the resistance of the supposed film on steels. Brennert8 and Donker and Dengg9 determined the potential at which a negative ion (e.g., C1-) moving in an electric field reacted with the metal anode, as detected by increased current flow or change in potential of the steel electrode in an electrolytic cell. The potential corresponding to reaction Brennert called the film break-through potential.

Large-grain specimens of iodide titanium prepared metal-lographically were stain etched using the technique of New York University as modified by Watertown Arsenal Laboratories. Orientations of grains showing an abnormal response to stain etching were determined by back-reflection X-ray techniques. X-ray results showed that a-titanium grains, oriented such that their basal planes were parallel to the polished surface, have a slower reactivity to stain etching than any other orientation. Grains oriented such that their basal planes made small angles with the polished surface exhibited reaction rates between that of the true basal orientation and the normal rate. As the angle with the surface increases the reactivity increases up to a maximum angle of 14 deg. Basal planes making an angle with the surface of greater than 14 deg show normal reactivity to stain etching. These data, plus work on polycrystalline specimens, indicate that the oxidation rate of titanium might be reduced by correct alignment of crystal planes. ThE earliest observed phenomenon in the micrography of titanium was the occurrence of a grains which exhibited no birefringency. Even though a titanium possesses a hexagonal-close-packed structure and should be optically anisotropic, it can appear optically isotropic, when the crystal is so oriented that its intersection with the polished surface is perpendicular to the axis of symmetry. During the develoment of color staining techniques for titanium: it was noted that the a phase did not stain uniformly. Staining of specimens of commercially pure titanium resulted in a micro-structure of blue-colored grains, among which were randomly oriented a few grains exhibiting colors between the initial yellow and the final blue color. Under polarized light, these off-colored grains appeared to be optically isotropic. More intense study with polarized light, however, showed only the yellow grains to be isotropic. The intermediate colored grains exhibited weak birefringency, which at first glance is not detectable due to the strong birefringency of the surrounding structure. Aminoff2 and Straumanis3 have previously shown that in zinc the basal orientation is less reactive than other orientations. Leidheiser4 showed the same thing to be true for the hexagonal-close -packed configuration of cobalt. Thus, it would appear that the basal-plane orientation is responsible for the abnormality in stained titanium. Later work by Leidheiser5 on cobalt has shown that other planes besides the basal plane exhibited reaction rates slower than the normal rate. Reported planes were the (100), the (1011) and several planes making small angles with the basal plane. The last observance appears not to be due to the reactivity of the reported plane but due to the reactivity of the basal plane which is very close to being parallel to the surface. There are, then, two possible explanations for the range of colors observed in stain-etched a titanium. Since extensive research on the effect of orientation on surface reaction has failed to provide any definite trend, these two explanations are not adequate in themselves. Planes showing the retarded reactivity differ not only for different crystal structures but for metals of the same crystal structure and even for different reactions of the same metal. Tragert,6 Leidheiser,7 Tammann,6 and wagner9 have shown copper to exhibit retarded reactivity on the (111) plane. However, Leidheiser10 has shown that under other conditions the retarded reactivity of copper is associated with the (100)

INTRODUCTION * The United States is fortunate in having abundant reserves of metallurgical-grade coals. Although these coals are better in quality and more accessible than most metallurgical-grade coals found throughout the rest of the world, the best grades of these coals are being depleted. Consequently, more efficient exploration tools and techniques, such as advanced methods of core drilling and logging, correlation by petrography, paleontology, palynology, † physical stratigraphy, and geophysical methods are being used to help assess the extent and quality of the remaining coal reserves. Exploration and assessment of new and existing coal properties become of utmost importance in determining ( 1 ) the economic justification for mining the coal, (2) the optimum design of the preparation plant, and (3) the most effective use of the coal. The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Ltd. at Trail, B. C., inaugurated a comprehensive program of investigation about 15 years ago to develop the most economical process of recovering the metal in the large accumulated stock of by-products of the lead smelter and the zinc plant. Two principal methods of recovery were followed to a successful conclusion—an electrothermic process to treat zinc-plant residues and cold slag and the fuming of hot slag from the lead blast furnaces. The latter was selected because it showed a saving over the former in its ability to handle hot blast-furnace slag, thus obviating the necessity of granulating, handling and eventually remelting the same slag for the electrothermic process. The design of a fuming plant was commenced in 1928, and construction, which was started immediately, was completed in July 1030. Operating intermittently for a general tuning up, the plant was officially blown in for regular operation in August. During this month the vagaries of a slag-fuming plant were studied and an operating crew was trained. A history of slag fuming at Trail and the development of plant design is given in a paper by G. E. Murray in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for 1933. Fuming Plant The fuming plant at Trail (Fig. 1) is a separate unit although of necessity interlocked closely with the lead smelter. The plant consists essentially of a fuming furnace with its accessories, a waste-heat boiler followed by an economizer, and a suction-type baghouse. The plant was built as the first of two 400-ton units with the intention of adding the second unit within a year, so that flues, fans and buildings were built to handle double the original load. Furnace.—The furnace as originally built (Fig. 2) was of water-jacket construction, 10 ft. wide, 20 ft. long and 6 to 10 ft. high. The roof height was made variable to check experimental work, which had indicated that this dimension affected the rate of reduction. Coal and air were supplied
