Deep drilling was the keynote of the more important developments in the North Rocky Mountain region during 1929, with Montana recording the most important achievement through discovery of three new oil fields. Alberta produced 1,000,000 bbl. of 74 gravity naphtha, showing a considerable gain over 1928, developed a commercial oil pool in Turner Valley and extended that field 8 miles southward. Wyoming's discovery field was deepened to a second producing horizon, giving impetus to deeper drilling, and practically every Wyoming oil field will have a deep test either this year or in the near future. Whereas Montana prospecting has been confined to the shallow plains structures, since the discovery of Kevin-Sunburst field, the coming year will see an active search for new oil and gas pools in sharp-dip structures, following the success of prospecting in the Sweetgrass Hills during 1929. A dozen or more structures have been mapped in North Central Montana, several of these straddling the Alberta border. Four structures tested thus far have all shown commercial oil or gas or both. Sweetgrass Hills The first important development in the Hills area was the Rogers-Imperial gasser, which had an initial of 51,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, with a rock pressure of 1080 lb. This well is located on a sharp nose running north from the hills into Alberta. Several wells drilled by independent operators on the American side, on the west flank of reserve structure, have developed a total open flow capacity of 30,000,000 cubic feet. The third structure tested in the Hills area is known as Bears Den, where commercial oil was found at the base of the Cretaceous at 2470 ft. The existence of oil in three lower sands has been established by two wells on the top of the structure, these two wells finding gas flows of 10,000,000 and 15,000,000 cu. ft., respectively, in the horizon where

The twelfth meeting of the Boston Section was held at the Engineers' Club, 2 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, on Monday evening, May 5, 1913, fifteen members and three guests being present. The meeting was called to order by Vice-Chairman Albert Sauveur, who introduced the speaker of the evening, Utley Wedge, of Ardmore, Pa. Mr. Wedge read his paper on the chloridizing roasting of copper ores, which he illustrated with a stereopticon, and which will be published in full by the Institute. After Mr. Wedge had closed his paper, which was received with great interest by all the members, the following discussion took place: Professor Hofman said that iron was formerly thought to ho essential to the Henderson process, but that it is not absolutely essential. Mr.Wedge said that, as far as he. knew, the presence of some sulphates was an abso¬lute necessity, and that line ores can be worked satisfactorily, although lime has an effect on the subsequent leaching. He added that the low fuel consumption of the latest Wedge furnace is a result of direct application of the combustion gases to the ore. Ten per cent. of fuel was needed with the muffle furnace. By direct firing he has been able to reduce the fuel needed to from 2 to 4 per cent. In the latest types of furnaces the gases from the upper hearth are not used. There is doubtless some temperature at which the loss. from copper chloride volatilization becomes serious, but in practice on Rio Tinto ores troublesome losses are not experienced. The copper apparently does not become volatile at. the temperatures where we would expect that it would. There are doubtless ores in which there would be serious danger from losses from this source. The latest furnaces do not use the high temperatures that were needed in the former single-hearth Wedge furnaces.

THE unusual physical, electrical and magnetic properties of the iron-nickel alloys has given rise to a voluminous literature. This work will be reviewed critically in "The Alloys of Iron and Nickel," a monograph of the Alloys of Iron Research Series, soon to be published. In what follows we shall therefore confine ourselves to those of the earlier investi-gations that involved the use of X-ray crystal-structure methods. The earliest X-ray work on the iron-nickel system was by Miss Andrews1. Using the powder method of X-ray analysis purely as a means of identifying the phases present, she located a region between 20 and 30 weight per cent nickel in which body-centered and face-centered phases coexisted. No lattice constants nor details of heat-treat-ment were reported. Bain2 also reported some qualitative observations. McKeehan3 made a systematic investigation over the whole of the system, giving many of his alloys four and some five different heat-treatments. In alloys furnace-cooled from 900° to 950° C. he found two coexisting phases between 0.15 and 30 per cent nickel. The precision of the lattice-constant measurements was low in comparison with what can be obtained today.. Even for alloys of the same heat-treatment, differences in the constants were often between two and ten parts per thousand. In regions where no change of lattice constant with heat-treatment should occur, differences of the same order of magnitude were found. Since the maximum change in the lattice constant of nickel with change of composition is only about 2 per cent of the constant for pure nickel, these variations in the constants for a given alloy cause the points

The combustion of fossil fuels in a fluidized bed of calcined limestone particles is a potentially efficient and economically attractive process for the generation of steam for electric power production and other uses. The process results in greatly reduced emissions of both sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide pollutants. Development work, evaluations, and design studies are being carried out by various organizations under contract with the Department of Interior (Office of Coal Research, OCR) and with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA). The Atomic Energy Commission's Argonne National Laboratory is one of the principal participants in the development program under interagency agreements with EPA and OCR. The principal reasons for developing fluidized-bed combustion, its advantages and disadvantages over conventional combustion methods, and some of the potential applications of the process are covered in this paper. The participants in the multiorganizational program, the sponsoring agencies, the general status of development of the overall project, and the chief program areas that still require resolution are discussed. The main features of the program of work at Argonne National Laboratory and the results achieved so far are also included.

INTRODUCTION In September 1974 the Resource Appraisal Group of the Branch of Oil and Gas Resources, U. S. Geological Survey, was asked to aid the Federal Energy Administration (FEA) in its legal responsibility to generate by June 1975 an independent appraisal of the undiscovered oil and gas resources of the United States, both onshore and offshore. As a result, the Resource Appraisal Group accelerated its ongoing efforts to develop sound appraisal methods and procedures that would permit the systematic collection and evaluation of basic data from petroleum provinces throughout the Nation. The results of this independent appraisal of the Nation's conventional oil and natural gas resources were published by the U. S. Geological Survey as Circular 725, June 1975 (1). The estimates in this report of undiscovered recoverable oil and gas resources for the United States were made: (1) by carefully re- viewing a large amount of geological and geophysical information gathered on more than 100 different provinces by over 70 geologists within the Survey; (2) by applying a variety of resource appraisal techniques to each potential petroleum province; and (3) by application of subjective probability procedures to group appraisals for each petroleum province. These methods provide a range of estimates which are summarized in terms of low, high and mean values for the various provinces and groups of provinces, or regions. The basic data and procedures used are documented and are being incorporated into a dynamic, data- intensive system that can be upgraded, updated and reevaluated periodically. These data are open to public inspection. In this study, the primary emphasis was placed on conventional crude oil and natural gas in the onshore provinces and the provinces on the continental shelf out to water depths of 200 metres; estimates

The US Geological Survey has developed mathematical modeling techniques to assess potential impacts on the hydrologic system resulting from mining of coal and oil shale in northwestern Colorado. Potential impacts of oil shale mining on groundwater hydrology have been simulated using a quasi-three-dimensional, finite-difference model. The model has been used to simulate hypothetical mine dewatering operations at two proposed oil shale mines. Dissolved-solids distribution and solute transport were simulated with a three-dimensional, finite-difference model that was used to evaluate the effects of flooding in hypothetical abandoned mines. The potential impacts of coal and oil shale mining on water-sheds were investigated using a digital watershed model. This deterministic physical-process model predicts responses of the hydrologic system to modifications resulting from mining in basins having snow as the major source of runoff and recharge. Potential impacts of coal development on surface water quality were investigated using a river quality assessment model. The models developed by the US Geological Survey have been useful in defining the potential effects of mining in northwestern Colorado. They are an important first step in analyzing the existing data base and in predicting impacts and new data needs. The models may not be totally applicable on the local scale but are very meaningful on the regional level.

I had these pieces separately placed upon 10-inch bearings under a 7-gross ton lianlrner, a piece of 2½-inch round iron laid upon them as a fuller, and the hammer allotved to fall from 20 inches above the fuller, which, according to Haswell, gave a ldow of 67.75 gross tons. The pieces were then turned orcr, the fuller placed upon the convex surface, and the harnnler allowed to fall from 13 inches above the fuller, giving a blow of 58.46 gross tons. You will see that the rails do aot show ally bigrls of ruptnre, and their color at the points of torture prove them to have been absolutely cold when the test was made. I thirk these rails ought to be reasonably safe in the track. As you see by this piece of the head of one of these rails, I had it plarred, and then some teeth cut in it by a cold clrisel, and one-half of them pounded down with a hammer. The teeth of my rack did not break off. The analyses of these rails substquently made are: I. 11. Carbon,... 0.110 0.880 Silicon,..0.050 0.058 Phosphorus ,..0.086 0.082 Manganese,.. 0.042 0 840 In conclusion, I will say that Dr. Dudley's paper as a contribu tion to our knowledge of steel rails is valuable and interesting, but I protest against his conclusions king reoeived as manufacturing or comtnercial axioms. From its being presented in the form-of a report to the leading railroad of the country from one of its trusted officers, as well as from the tone of the concluding deductions, it is liable to be so received by railroad men. If any railroad com pany desires rails made under either of Dr. Dudley's formulas, and are willing to pay a price large enough to cover the loss in making them, dl and good; but so long as the rail makers are compelled to gwrrantee the wear of their rails for a given number of years, justice reqnires that. the composition of the steel from which these rails are made should be left to them. Experience has indicated that hard bronzes are not suitable for bearing applications where high bearing loads and speeds are involved. It is the general practice to utilize softer materials for these purposes, such as copper, lead, silver, babbitt, lead-base alloys, and more recently aluminum-base alloys, preferably supported by a steel backing. It was the objective of the present investigation to study a new material produced by powder metallurgical methods susceptible to precipitation-hardening. Test MAteriaIs Preliminary tests were made with compacts containing copper, nickel and silicon in quantities sufficient to form 3 to 5 per cent nickel silicide. It mas found that this type of alloy was susceptible to the formation of a soft surface shell when sintered in tank hydrogen. The depth of the shell depended On the length of sintering time and sintering temperature, and varied in thickness from a few thousandths to as much as One eighth inch. This soft shell resulted from the preferential oxidation of silicon, thereby reducing the efficiency of age-hardening by the nickel silicide compound. The body of the sintered compacts below the soft shell could be precipitation-hardened to a hardness of 70 to 85 Rockwell B, by quenching from goo°C. and age-hardening at 450°C. A series of tests was made with various addition agents, in order to decrease the rate of preferential oxidation, and it was found that phosphorus was most beneficial in this respect. After considerable experimentation, the following nominal com-position was accepted as standard: 2.4 per cent nickel; 0.8 silicon; 0.3 phosphorus; balance copper. The physical propertties and certain bearing properties of this alloy are described in the present paper Preparation of Compacts Several methods of incorporating the hardening ingredient (nickel silicide) were studied. Compacts formed from copper, nickel and silicon powders were found to be inferior to those fabricated from prealloyed nickel silicide master alloys, because of the rapid oxidation of pure silicon during sintering. The use of a prealloyed nickel silicide hardener containing 25 per cent silicon and 75 per cent nickel could be further improved by preparing a master alloy, incorporating nickel, silicon, phosphorus and copper, having the following nominal composition~ 25 per cent nickel; 7 silicon; 3 phosphorus 64 copper. This alloy is brittle in the cast condition and can be readily powdered. Sintering Procedure The blended powders were pressed at '5 to 40 tons per sq' in., the pressure depending on the size and shape of the compacts. A discussion of the probable future use of coal for power development involves the study of several basic factors, such as future demand for power, the quantity and availability of fuels in direct competition with coal, the price of coal, and a closely related factor—the efficiency and cost of fuel utilization. Predictions based on purely statistical analyses of past coal consumption have definite limitations. For example, statistics showing the relation between coal utilization and total energy consumption from all sources between the years 1890 to 1930 indicate that during that period the energy consumption per person in the United States increased five times, while the coal consumption per person increased only twice1, and there has been an actual decrease in per capita coal consumption since 1920. Figures such as these, compiled by authentic agencies, emphasize the need for caution in attempting estimates as to the future use of coal, and, incidentally, would seem to offer little basis for optimism in the coal industry. They also suggest the value of analyzing broadly the part played in the past by the related factors of power consumption, competitive fuels, coal prices and the efficiency of utilization. Proper weight must also be given in such a study to the present status and limitations of power-plant developments, arid to the question of what the coal industry itself can do to further its own interests arid influence the consumption of its product.

High-iRon cements have a number of advantages over cements carrying little or no iron. The presence of iron in Portland cement aids in the manufacture of the cement and also imparts certain advantageous physical properties to the finished product. In manufacture, the presence of iron lowers the fuel consumption, increases the ease of proper"burning, and lessens the destructive action of the charge on the kiln refractories. In the finished cement the presence of iron reduces the expansion and contraction, adds strength, adds increased resistance to"freezing and thawing, and increases the resistance of the cement to sea "or sulphate waters. [" During the past few years the construction of numerous dams through- "out the Southeast by the Tennessee Valley Authority has stimulated the "production of high-iron cements. At present a great number of specifica- "tions call for an iron cement, and the industry is supplying this demand "with a Portland cement carrying approximately 5 per cent iron oxide. "Several manufacturers are now making practically all of their cement "of this type and a number of others manufacture it as a special cement "over short periods to meet demands from the Tennessee Valley Authority "and other buyers. " The recent increase in the use of iron in Portland cement has created "a market for iron products that previously was nonexistent. The chief "sources of supply for the cement manufacturers at present are iron sand, "iron sinter and slag, and ocher. The Copperhill mining district, Ten- "nessee, supplies both iron sinter and slag for use in cement. To THE average person, the purport of the items and figures on the balance sheet of a mining company are hazy and the real financial condition of the company is cloaked in obscurity. It is also likely that the satisfaction of the stockholder in his investment, as well as the determination of the prospective investor, rests more on the reputation of the company, his confidence in the management, the stated earnings per share and the dividends paid, than on a comprehension of the information contained in the balance sheet. The balance sheet of any company at best can only closely approximate the true financial condition as of a given date. Any item of asset, except cash, can probably be altered if another's viewpoint is applied. It is difficult and expensive to drill and explore an orebody to determine the entire tonnage of ore therein. Those inherent difficulties render it practically impossible to prepare an absolutely correct balance sheet of a mining company. It is possible, however, to present the facts of a mining company more intelligently and comprehensively than is usually done. With this in mind, a balance sheet of an imaginary mining company is submitted, with supporting schedules. The same fundamental principles hold true whether we consider a large or a small company. Less complexity is involved in dealing with the affairs of a smaller company. Therefore, for this purpose, the assumed company operates but two mines and a smelting plant. It has been deemed advisable to introduce the features of the operation of a mine acquired prior to March 1, 1913 and one after that date. The presentation therefore is concerned in one mine with the appraisement as of March 1, 1913 and in the other with the appraisement by reason of discovery. A consequential factor pertains to dividends paid from depletion reserves and therefore free of surtax to the stockholders. While supporting schedules, when necessary, give details of certain items on the balance sheet, it seems desirable to give further explanations with respect to some of them. This seems to be important because some mining companies do not treat the items as indicated on the statements submitted.

ONE of the most serious and important economic administrative problems facing American railway authorities to-day is that of their rails, and it is one to which much thought, is being given, not only by the executive officers of the railways and the manufacturers of the steel rails, but also by State and National commissions. It is realized by many and admitted by some that the present situation is one which cannot continue. The roadways of railways must be made more secure, or the weight of rolling stock and the speed of trains must be lessened; and the desired result must be attained with the minimum outlay of money, both in expenditure on plant and in cost of operation. If the investment per mile is too large, or through the lessening of tonnage and efficiency of equipment the cost of operation is too great, the desired and demanded cheap service cannot he rendered to the public. Therefore, the weight of equipment cannot be greatly reduced, and lessening the rapidity of service would be far from satisfactory; consequently, the safety of the roadway must be secured with the least practical outlay. It is imperative that the roadbed should be properly graded, with the fewest practically possible curves; that it should have good ballast, be well drained, have good ties properly spaced, and be laid with sound rails of suitable weight, efficiently joined together, and that the whole property be carefully and intelligently cared for. My province is to treat of the sound rails. During the last few years there has been renewed interest in and discussion of that question, and I know that many rail makers not only have been and are desirous of maintaining the highest standards of manufacture which they may have attained, but have been and are seeking to better their product, in several instances devoting much time and money to that end. At the same time, they realize that the cost of any improvement in quality which they may accomplish must be kept within certain commercial bounds; and that fact is as fully understood by their patrons as by themselves, and it should be kept in mind by all who discuss the question.

In attempting to find a rapid and economical means for solving many of the subsurface problems that confront the highway engineer, the author for the past two years has utilized a Megger Ground Tester on resistivity surveys in conjunction with highway construction. Electrical surveys in connection with highway work are largely shallow depth surveys, thus differing from most other types of resistivity work. Consequently, the readings are affected by a great many qualifying factors such as the density and moisture content of the media under observation and the amount of weathering and leaching. In most cases the surface layer is decidedly heterogeneous in character, and, because of the great number of side hill cuts, the second layer, which in most cases is rock overlain by some sort of surface soil, silt, or debris, seldom lies in a horizontal position. Shallow strata, lacking homogeneity and not lying in a horizontal position, do not lend themselves readily to accurate theoretical interpretations, therefore the author has used empirical rules to a large extent in interpreting depth soundings. The following empirical rules of interpretation are surprisingly adequate for highway work, since much of the work is in the nature of reconnaissance surveying and the results are construed to be approximations. The writer is careful not to risk interpretation on some special feature of the curve, since such features are usually due to random errors or lack of homogeneity among the subsurface strata. Effect of Surface Medium A resistivity depth sounding taken to a depth of 200 or 300 ft. is not much affected by superficial conditions, but these conditions have a great effect in depth soundings to 25 or 30 ft. In shallow soundings the character of the surface medium has a very marked effect on the entire resistivity graph. Fig. 1 illustrates a very striking example. Interest naturally attaches to fissuring and subsidence of the earth's surface, whatever the cause may be, and the induced movement and fissuring of the impervious strata overlying an oil sand is of even greater practical importance because of its bearing upon the recoverability of the portion of the oil not already extracted or extractable by ordinary production methods. It is probably true that significant ground movement induced by oil production occurs only in oil fields in relatively young formations, where the oil comes from incoherent or only slightly cemented sands and oil-soaked clays, but inasmuch as a great proportion of our "gusher" wells produce from "running" sands and yield a large part of the total oil output, it seems worth while to make an effort to inspire the collection and recording of data indicating the nature and magnitude of oil-field subsidence, both surface and subsurface. Goose Creek Field The single known instance in which the nature and magnitude of the surface subsidence incident to petroleum withdrawal has been accurately ascertained is that in the Goose Creek oil field of Texas, described by Pratt and Johnson.' There subsidence caused the submergence of a considerable area within the oil field, and, because the title to the naturally submerged lands of Texas rests in the State, it became necessary to determine whether the submergence was due to natural or artificial causes. A detailed study revealed that the sunken area conformed very closely to the limits of the productive oil field and that the cumulative depression over an eight-year period ranged from zero at the margin to 3.25 ft. at the center. CANBY, Wallingford, Conn.-On page 2, the author speaks of the importance of using a testing sieve clothed with the same material as the screen being studied; does he regard this as essential? In practice, how does the screen efficiency calculated by the difficult-grain method compare with those computed by the usual undersize method? Is it possible by the author's method, to obtain a measure of efficiency that can safely be compared with that of another screen sizing a different ore? ROBERT K. WARNER.-The use of a testing sieve clothed like the mill screen being studied is desirable but not essential for routine work about a mill where the character of the feed varies little, as regards the shape of the grains and the sizing test. Close agreement in size of aperture between the sieve and the screen is, however, important if the data obtained are to be valuable to others working on a different feed. If the testing sieve is coarser than the mill screen, the efficiency will appear unfairly low; whereas if it is too fine one might get efficiencies greater than 100 per cent. because of the apparent oversize in the undersize. In either of these cases the usefulness of the difficult-grain method of calculation would be reduced. As screens wear, the undersize grows appreciably coarser so that it is desirable to test screens only when the cloth is new or else to provide testing sieves that are worn about the same amount. The futility of making efficiency observations on a. distorted or broken screen surface is obvious.

THE phase Ti2Ni has been described by Laves and Wallbaum,1 who found the phase to be face-centered cubic with 96 atoms per cell, by Duwez and Taylor,2 who confirmed these observations and reported a lattice parameter of 11.333A, and by Rostoker,' who reported the structure to be isomorphous with the double carbide Fe,W,C, type E93, and to have a lattice parameter of 11.29A. In this study a group of isostructural phases has been found among alloys of certain second and third long-period transition elements. The systems investigated included all the combinations of zirconium and hafnium with the Group VIII elements rhodium, palladium, iridium, and platinum. There is evidence that many of these new Ti2Ni-type phases require oxygen for their stability in the temperature ranges in which they were studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloy samples weighing 5 g were prepared by arc-melting metals whose purity is indicated in Table I in a helium-argon atmosphere. A discussion of the probable future use of coal for power development involves the study of several basic factors, such as future demand for power, the quantity and availability of fuels in direct competition with coal, the price of coal, and a closely related factor—the efficiency and cost of fuel utilization. Predictions based on purely statistical analyses of past coal consumption have definite limitations. For example, statistics showing the relation between coal utilization and total energy consumption from all sources between the years 1890 to 1930 indicate that during that period the energy consumption per person in the United States increased five times, while the coal consumption per person increased only twice1, and there has been an actual decrease in per capita coal consumption since 1920. Figures such as these, compiled by authentic agencies, emphasize the need for caution in attempting estimates as to the future use of coal, and, incidentally, would seem to offer little basis for optimism in the coal industry. They also suggest the value of analyzing broadly the part played in the past by the related factors of power consumption, competitive fuels, coal prices and the efficiency of utilization. Proper weight must also be given in such a study to the present status and limitations of power-plant developments, arid to the question of what the coal industry itself can do to further its own interests arid influence the consumption of its product.
