THE Chivor emerald field is situated on the eastern slope of the Andes in the Department of Boyacá, at an elevation of about 8000 ft. above sea level. It overlooks the Llanos (plains) of the Orinoco and is watered by many streams flowing into the Rio Meta, the Orinoco's largest tributary. The Rio Meta is navigable from the Orinoco to a point within about 50 miles of the Chivor district and may eventually prove to be the reasonable outlet for the future development of this part of the country. The topography of the district is extremely rugged and mountainous (Fig. 1), the difference in elevation between two points on a mining claim 1 km. square being sometimes as much as 4000 ft. The ground is covered with dense forest growth and the available timber is suitable and sufficient for mining purposes, but it is becoming gradually depleted by Indian clearings as the country around the mines becomes settled. The many streams combined with the rough topography give good possi-bilities for hydroelectric power. The center of population nearest to Chivor is Bogota, the capital of the republic and a city of some 300,000 inhabitants; the distance is two and one-half days' travel. The first stage of the journey from Bogota, is accomplished by rail to Chocontá, some 4 hr. travel. From Chocontá the journey is made in the saddle, one night being spent in Guateque. The latter is a small town and the nearest post office to the mines, being some 10 hr. ride distant. The roads are mere bridle paths, in parts hazardous and almost impassable in the wet season. All supplies brought to the mines, other than those produced locally, are carried by pack mule; mule freight from Chocontá costs 3 centavos1 per pound. The climate of the Chivor district is healthful and bracing. The wet season begins in March and concludes in November, the remaining months being dry. The annual precipitation is about 150 in. The temperature throughout the year is nearly constant, varying from about 45° F. to about 65° F. shade temperature. The rains are cold and unpleasant, and for the greater part of each day in the wet season the country is shrouded in dense mist. A method is described whereby the relationship of both the "at-pressure" powder compact density and the "zero-pressure" compact density to the applied pressure may be obtained from continuous measurements of punch movement during a single compaction operation. The rate of density increase with applied pressure for the metal powders is found to be proportional to the volume fraction of pores for pressures exceeding a lower limit which varies from 15,000 to 30,000 psi, depending on the powder. 1 HE compaction of powdered materials is carried out primarily to increase the density of the material. If the ultimate goal of the over-all process is the attainment of minimum porosity, compaction is responsible for most of the densification. For example, loose powdered metals have porosities of about 65 to 75 pct. Axial loading in a die or hydrostatic pressure may effectively reduce the porosity of most powders to 20 pct or lower with pressures of 50,000 psi and greater. The relationship between the density of a powder compact and the pressure needed to achieve that density is most commonly obtained by pressing several compacts, each at a different pressure. Measurement of the densities of the individual compacts when they are removed from the die then provides the density-pressure relationship. However, this method suffers from several disadvantages. Because a large number of compacts and pressing operations are required, it is inherently slow. Furthermore, since density measurements are made after the specimens are removed from the die, data obtained refer only to pressures greater than those necessary to form a coherent compact. The third disadvantage is the inability of this method to provide information about the compact density at the applied pressure in the die. Because the determination of density-pressure relationships has been a slow, tedious process, investigators have sought to express the compaction behavior of powders by other means. The general terms "comparability" and L'compressibility" have been used to rank powders qualitatively according to their compaction characteristics. To restore a quantitative nature to the subject and to prevent confusion, Schwarzkopf1 has proposed that compac-tibility be defined as the minimum pressure needed to produce a given green strength, while compressibility should be used to indicate the extent to which the density of a powder is increased by a given pressure. Probably the most widely used of the compaction parameters is the "compression ratio,'' which is generally defined as the ratio of the compact density obtained by pressing at a given pressure to the apparent density of the loose powder.2 However, the description of the compaction behavior of a powder by these parameters provides only limited information about the process because of their applicability to just one specific condition such as a given green strength or a given pressure. The method of obtaining density-pressure relationships which will be described in the present paper was designed to eliminate the shortcomings of the previous techniques while maintaining equivalent accuracy and precision. Rods of 99.99 + pct Al which had initial orientatzons of <001>, <118>, <115>, <111>, and random were swaged at room temperature. Changes in orientation as a function of deformation were studied on axis distribution charts. The <001> orientation appeared to be relatively stable due to the inhomogeneity of the deformation process. near the <100> zone were quickly reoriented towards <001>. Orientations on the <110> zone between <118> and <115> appeared to be stable to reductions of about 50 pct, then were reoriented toward <001>. At very high reductzotzs. movement away from the <111> orientation was observed. the requirement that a circular cross section be maintained. In addition to these mechanical factors, there are grain-boundary effects in poly crystalline materials which are not yet understood. Hartmann and Macherauch conclude, for example, that multiple slip occurs for all orientations in fine-grained aluminum and copper and that the choice of operative slip systems has no simple relationship to orientation.? Many investigators have attempted to avoid problems of interpretation caused by an initial texture by treating the starting material to obtain as ran- IT has been generally accepted that the deformation texture obtained at high reductions, e.g. 90 pct, will not be noticeably affected by a prior texture; whereas, that obtained at reductions of 40 to 50 pct may be significantly influenced by the specimen history.&apos; Some recent studies, however, have been interpreted as showing that an initial texture strongly influenced the deformation textures in rods at reductions greater than 90 pct. Freda and Cullity suggested that the <001> texture in a heavily cold-worked copper rod was due to a <001> texture in the original casting. McHargue, Jetter? and Ogle concluded that the <001> component in an aluminum rod extruded at liquid nitrogen temperature was remanent from a <001> texture in the cast extrusion billet.3 Most of the published work on the effect of initial orientation on deformation textures has been for cold-rolled or compressed single crystals,4-6 The primary interest in these studies was to examine various orientations with regard to their stability under flow? thus determining the possibility of such orientations being stable end orientations. There appears to be no published studies on the effect of initial orientation on fiber textures in polycrystalline specimens. A recent study, however, is concerned with the reorientation of individual grains in polycrystalline specimens pulled in tension.? Although the reorientation of single crystals loaded in simple tension is well known, the movements in the forming of wires and rods would be expected to be different due to the circular array of radial-compressive stresses exerted by the die walls or the rolls, and to

Bench scale and pilot plant research was conducted using dolomitic (CaO - MgO) lime as the basic additive in the preparation of self-fluxed pellets from a typical magnetic taconite concentrate (5.5% SiO2). The specific objective of this investigation was to ascertain the viability of the magnesia lime pellets in high temperature oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Pellet basicity and induration temperature were major parameters affecting fired pellet quality; temperatures ranging from 1200° to 1250°C appeared to be the most favorable for production of self-fluxed pellets with basicities (B) above 1.0. Comparison of the mechanical and metallurgical properties of regular (acid) and self-fluxed pellets (B = 1.55) produced under similar conditions in a modified grate pelletizing machine showed that the selffluxed pellets were more resistant to abrasion and to high and low temperature reduction disintegration, an important consideration in commercial application. The +3 mesh Linder index increased from 68% (regular pellets) to over 90% (self-fluxed pellets). The reducibility and swelling indices of the self-fluxed pellets were found to be comparable to the regular pellets.

UNTIL recently, the only commercial method of producing magnesium has been fused salt electrolysis, despite a considerable amount of experimental work on the direct reduction of magnesium oxide. In this early work, a number of investigators demonstrated that magnesium oxide would react with any one of several reducing agents to produce magnesium vapor, but that the mixture of magnesium oxide and reducing agent must be heated to a high temperature even in a vacuum. In particular, it was demonstrated that silicon and aluminum are effective reducing agents and that when either of these is used the magnesium vapor can be condensed to massive metal. In spite of this knowledge, no successful commercial reduction process was developed, at least in this country, because of the operational difficulties imposed by the requirement of high temperature and vacuum and because of the high cost of the reducing agent. The outstanding experimental work done by Pidgeon, who carefully reviewed all of the known methods of making magnesium and then selected ferrosilicon reduction, overcame some of the operational difficulties. The process developed by Pidgeon comprises briquetting a mixture of calcined dolomite and reducing agent, pre-heating the briquets to about 600°C. in an externally heated alloy retort, reducing the MgO with silicon in an evacuated horizontal alloy retort heated externally to about 1150°C., and condensing the magnesium vapor to a solid in a cold extension of the retort projecting beyond the fr6nt of the furnace. A major advantage of Pidgeon&apos;s process is that the retort is not cooled down between charges. Earlier investigators had used apparatus that necessitated cooling and reheating of the retort between charges. Early in January 1942, when the War Production Board was considering the Pidgeon process for quickly increasing the production of magnesium, The New Jersey Zinc Co. offered to have a research investigation of the process carried on, with the hope of assisting in its further development. This offer was accepted, and a two-retort pilot plant was built at Palmerton and put in operation on Jan. 29, 1942. An intensive investigation of certain phases of the process was carried out in the ensuing four months. This investigation was completed in the last part of May 1942, and the pilot plant was then shut down. Subsequently, The New Jersey Zinc Co. was requested to have further development work done on the process, and a more extensive investigation was undertaken in August I942 under contract with the War production Board and under the super- vision of the War Metallurgy Committee. A technique was developed to calculate the density of liquid metals from the profile of a weighed levitated drop obtained by emitted light photography and calibration. The density of liquid copper was determined over the temperature range 1370" to 2100°K and expressed with the equation: The molar volumes and thermal coefficients of expansion are calculated. Copper, upon melting, was found to expand 3.34 pct. A knowledge of the density of liquid metals is essential as it is a parameter appearing in most theories of the liquid state. The liquid density is also necessary for the calculation of the commercially important contraction occurring on solidification. Unfortunately good density values are rarely available and the present work was undertaken to establish a new method of density determination free from the limitations of the existing methods. For liquid metals with high melting points, the variation and the limited number of density values reported in the literature have been caused primarily by difficulties in technique, a matter which has been adequately discussed by Urbain.&apos; In all the methods used for measuring the density of the high-melting liquid metals there are sources of error, and corrections have to be made. For example, in the method of balanced columns, the formation of gas bubbles in one or both arms was a great source of error. In the pyknometer3 and immersed-sinker methods, corrections of certain volumes for thermal expansion to the operating temperature exceed 4 pct. In the maximum-bubble method5 a correction for the thermal expansion of the bubble-tube is used (about 1.6 pct); a second correction takes into account the change in the volume of liquid displaced by the bubble-tube (about 3.5 pct). Another method used is based on the shape of a drop of liquid, at rest on an inert refractory plaque, obtained photographically or radiographi-cally. The volume is calculated from the shape, which is sensitive to the surface tension and supporting material, by some intricate empirical relation. The drop contour changes with 90 deg rotation of the support.7 The application of all methods is limited by reaction between liquid metal and the apparatus. The successful stabilization of a mass of liquid metal during levitation melting8 afforded a technique for measuring the density of liquid metals out of contact with solid materials. The technique was developed by using copper as the density of liquid copper has already been studied extensively, thus allowing comparison with the new method. It consists of calculating the volume from the dimensioned profile of the levitated drop obtained by emitted-light photography and careful calibration. The molten egg-shaped drop spins around the magnetic axis of the coil (lined vertically) at a speed which seems to increase with increasing temperature. The method does not involve corrections and the experimental setup allows the use of vacuum or special atmospheres. The maximum operating temperature is limited by excessive evaporation of metal from the droplet. EXPERIMENTAL Levitating System. A stabilizing ring was used in conjunction with a 3-turn levitating coil energized by a 450-kc per sec, 10-kw Toccotron with a high current-low voltage output stabilized to f 1 pet.&apos; APyrex glass tube with a Pyrex Optical flat window inserted through the coil and ring allowed the use of special atmospheres during levitation melting, as shown in Fig. 1. Optical System. Fig. 1 shows the optical arrangement used to photograph the profiles of the drop, parallel and perpendicular to the vertical spinning axis, simultaneously on the same frame of a high-speed 35-mm film. The optical system was adjusted to avoid any distortion of the profiles and to ensure that both profiles are in focus. The length of path from object to objective was about 30 cm, and a magnification factor close to 1 was obtained with the single-lens reflex-camera system. Temperature Measurement and Control. In operation, the specimen temperature was constant to 5 C for a fixed power input to the levitating coil and fixed rate of gas flow through the tube. The general energy equation, including change in kinetic energy, was solved by numerical integration and used to evaluate simplifying assumptions and application practices over a wide range of conditions. When extreme conditions were encountered, sizable errors were caused by large integration intervals, application of Simpson&apos;s rule and neglecting change in kinetic energy. A maximum error of only 1.31 percent was caused by assuming temperature and compressibility constants at their average value. It was discovered that a discontinuity can develop in the integral for the injection case. This discontinuity indicates a point of zero pressure change and is an inflection point in the pressure traverse. INTRODUCTION When a pressure in a gas well is to be calculated, one of the first decisions is to select a method of calculation. In many instances, this selection becomes a problem because the literature, at best, provides an evaluation of any method for only a limited range of conditions. Once a method has been selected, a question often arises as to the size of the calculation interval which should be used. The question regarding calculation interval arises because an analytic solution is not obtainable and approximate solutions must be used. This paper presents an evaluation of major assumptions and application practices of probably the two most widely used methods for calculating steady-state single-phase gas well pressures. The two methods are Cullender and Smith1-" (numerical integration), and average temperature and com-pressibility. The Cullender-Smith method assumes that change in kinetic energy is negligible and is normally applied in two steps with a Simpson&apos;s rule correcton. The average temperature and compressibility method, in addition to neglecting kinetic energy change, asumes that temperature and compressibility are constant at their average values. This method is normally applied for wellhead shut-in pressures of less than 2,000 psi, and in one step. Computer programs were written to compute bottom-hole pressure with and without the assumptions, using various approaches. Values of input parameters investigated are shown in Table 1. Flow rate was limited to a maximum of 5,000 and 10,000 Mcf/D for tubing sizes of 1.610 and 1.995 in. ID, respectively. Flow rate was also limited to 10,000 Mcf/D for a tubing size of 2.441 in. ID when wellhead flowing pressure was 100 psia. These limitations were imposed on flow rate so as not to exceed sonic velocity. The z factor routine available necessitated limiting bottom-hole temperature to 240F and wellhead pressure to 3,000 psia. Pressures were compared on the basis of percent deviation from the trapezoidal integration of Eq. l or 2 at 100-ft intervals. A preliminary investigation indicated that a 1,000-ft interval solution would differ from a 50-ft interval solution by less than 0.25 percent; therefore, the 100-ft interval was chosen for a base. For the purpose of comparison, deviations less than 1 percent were considered insignificant. where 111.1 qeC2/d p = kinetic energy term. IN approaching the problems of sampling coal, a brief statement of certain facts that are more or less taken for granted may be helpful: 1. The coal-mine operator needs reliable data as to the physical and chemical characteristics of his coal in order to plan and control intelligently its mining, preparation, and marketing. The consumer needs such data in order to select the equipment and the coal best suited to meet his requirements, to check the quality of fuel delivered, and the efficiency of its use. Various government control agencies require such data as a basis for classifications and establishment of limits, for use in carrying out the requirements of federal, state or municipal laws. 2. All such data must be obtained by analyses, measurements, or tests made on samples, which are taken to represent the coal tested. It is now becoming generally recognized that, in accordance with statistical laws, test results from samples are not expected to represent the exact qualities of the lot or lots from which they are taken, except within statistical, or "expected" limits. Such limits are definitely specified by some present standards of the American Society for Testing Materials and the British Standards Institution. 3. Samples that give ash within satisfactory limits are usually assumed to be sufficiently accurate for other analyses, except under special conditions such as meeting close specifications for coals showing wide variability in sulphur, fusibility of ash, or other quality. 4. In modern coal sampling the increment is recognized as the basis for taking samples. For a given accuracy the number and weight of increments specified are increased with: (a) the expected ash, and (b) the top size designation of the lot to be sampled. 5. It is extremely important that every sampler recognize that: the specified number and weight of increments are minimums, and that the precautions to be used in order to take them properly are also minimums; that in the reduction of the gross sample the sizes specified for the coal after each stage of the crushing are maximum; that the quantities specified to be taken after each crushing stage are minimum; that any short cuts or failures to meet the requirements specified will reduce the statistical accuracy of the results, although it is possible that one or two checks on a few results may seem to show otherwise.

Oil and gas activity reached a higher peak in Indiana during 1940 than for any like period during the past decade. Major activity, as during 1939, was in the southwestern part of the state, the Indiana portion of the Eastern Interior Coal Basin, where most of the increase was due to field drilling in previously proven areas. The amount of wildcat drilling was about the same as for 1939. No new fields of any apparent consequence were discovered during the year, with the possible exception of the College pool, in southwest Posey County. Only one well had been completed in this area at the end of the year. About 10 ft. of saturated Aux Vases sandstone was drilled in this well and the initial production was I00 bbl. of oil a day. Other discoveries during the year 1940 include: St. Thomas, in southwestern Knox County, where four McClosky wells, ranging from I00 to 300 bbl. a day initially, were com-pleted; Buff kin, in central Posey County, with 11 oil wells and 5 gas wells completed; and new developments in two old areas —Randolph County (part of the old Trenton field) and Gentryville, northwestern Spencer County, where some oil was found many years ago. The St. Thomas field proved disappoint-ing, with very spotty production from the McClosky horizon of the St. Genevieve limestone at a depth of about 1875 ft. The discovery well flowed 362 bbl. a day ini-tially. At the end of the year the field was pretty well outlined by dry holes and some inside locations were dry. The Buffkin pool also proved spotty, with production from shallow Pennsylvanian sands and from the Basal Pennsylvanian Mansfield sandstone, the latter at a depth of approximately I175 ft., with small production from the Cypress sandstone of Chester age. Oil wells in this pool are small, ranging from 25 to 75 bbl. a day. The Randolph County area, on the east side of the Trenton gas field, showed some promise for a commercial gas field, with four completed gas wells having cumulative initial flows of about 1,200,ooo cu. ft. a day. The area appar-ently was not depleted during the Trenton boom at the turn of the century, since casing pressures are about as high as the virgin pressure in the old field. Elsewhere the pressure has dropped as low as 5 pounds. The Griffin field received most of the drilling during 1940, with 163 completed oil wells. This field now covers about 3200 acres on the Indiana side of the Wabash River and is not as yet completely delimited. It produced the major part of Indiana&apos;s oil during the year—a total of 3,594,000 bbl. At the end of 1940, there were 253 producing wells in Griffin. New Harmony had five completions for a total of 24. The Rockport field, in Spencer County, continued to be actively developed and had a total of 45 gas wells and 9 oil wells at the end of the year. Oil in commercial quantities had not been found in the field previous to 1940. Total gas production for the year was 394,470,000 cubic feet. In all, 521 wells were drilled in the state during 1940, as compared to 377 for 1939. Of this number 248 were oil wells, 77 were gas wells and 196 were dry. Divided into

ELASTIC constants of yttrium and eleven of the rare earth elements have been measured. This has been accomplished by measuring the propagation velocities of ultrasonic pulses. The velocity measurements were made by noting the elapsed time between an applied pulse and the appearance of successive echoes. The pulse-echo technique has become relatively common, and the basis of the measurement is outlined in several standard tests, e.g., Heuter and Bolt.1 Two important assumptions are made when using this method for the determination of elastic moduli. First, the pulse is assumed to propagate as a plane wave. To justify this assumption, the cross section of the test specimen should be large compared to the wave length of the transmitted pulse. For these measurements on the rare earth elements the minimum cross section wave length ratio was about 20. A second assumption which must be made when using polycrystalline specimens is that the grains are sufficiently numerous and randomly oriented so that the specimen may be approximated as elasti-cally isotopic. The grain size in the as-cast specimens which were used is believed to be sufficiently fine for this approximation, and the degree of preferred orientation is believed to be small. Supporting this viewpoint is the fact that elasticity measurements by the pulse-echo technique on as-cast specimens of other metals give results which are in satisfactory agreement with values obtained by other techniques. Hence, it is believed that the measured elasticity values for the rare earth elements are not apt to be seriously in error due to the assumption of elastic isotopy. The apparatus used in this determination was a modified Sperry Reflectoscope with a precisely calibrated time base circuit. Piezoelectric transducers were used both to generate the pulse and to detect the echoes. X-cut quartz crystals were used for the longitudinal modes, and Y-cut quartz crystals were used for the shear modes. Frequencies of 2.25 and 5 megacycles per sec were employed. Most of the specimens were 2.5 to 5.0 cm in length. Results Table I is a tabulation of the measured propagation velocities of longitudinal waves and of shear waves, together with densities obtained by Sped- ding, Daane, and Herrmann2 from lattice parameter measurements. The shear modulus, Poisson&apos;s ratio, and Young&apos;s modulus were calculated from the data in Table I through use of the following relationships: µ = pv32 [1] s=2-(vb/vs)2/2[1-(vb/vs)2] [2] and Y= 2µ(l+s) [3] where s is the shear modulus, Y is the Young&apos;s modulus, s is Poisson&apos;s ratio, p is the density, V0 is the longitudinal wave velocity, and v, is the shear wave velocity. The calculated quantities are shown in Table 11. Compressibility values can be computed from the relationship and the computed values may be compared with measured values obtained by Bridgman.8 Table III lists the data for such a comparison. The agreement is satisfactory, being particularly good for neodymi- um and gadolinium, poor for samarium, and intermediate for the other elements. Some variation is expected since Bridgman&apos;s measurements are isothermal, whereas the present measurements are adiabatic. In addition there may be some effect due to small variations in purity. Though most of the rare earth metals measured by Bridgman and all of the metals used in the present measurements were prepared at this laboratory, minor purity variations might exist since the samples came from different lots. Also, any imperfections such as dislocations, vacancies, voids, grain boundaries, microcracks, etc., should contribute to the volume change of a com-

The discovery well flowed 362 bbl. a day ini-tially. At the end of the year the field was pretty well outlined by dry holes and some inside locations were dry. The Buffkin pool also proved spotty, with production from shallow Pennsylvanian sands and from the Basal Pennsylvanian Mansfield sandstone, the latter at a depth of approximately I175 ft., with small production from the Cypress sandstone of Chester age. Oil wells in this pool are small, ranging from 25 to 75 bbl. a day. The Randolph County area, on the east side of the Trenton gas field, showed some promise for a commercial gas field, with four completed gas wells having cumulative initial flows of about 1,200,ooo cu. ft. a day. The area appar-ently was not depleted during the Trenton boom at the turn of the century, since casing pressures are about as high as the virgin pressure in the old field. Elsewhere the pressure has dropped as low as 5 pounds. The Griffin field received most of the drilling during 1940, with 163 completed oil wells. This field now covers about 3200 acres on the Indiana side of the Wabash River and is not as yet completely delimited. It produced the major part of Indiana&apos;s oil during the year—a total of 3,594,000 bbl. At the end of 1940, there were 253 producing wells in Griffin. New Harmony had five completions for a total of 24. The Rockport field, in Spencer County, continued to be actively developed and had a total of 45 gas wells and 9 oil wells at the end of the year. Oil in commercial quantities had not been found in the field previous to 1940. Total gas production for the year was 394,470,000 cubic feet. In all, 521 wells were drilled in the state during 1940, as compared to 377 for 1939. Of this number 248 were oil wells, 77 were gas wells and 196 were dry. Divided into

Among the iron-bearing ores of the world, the titaniferous iron sands of New Zealand are probably the least known to American engineers. This is not surprising in view of the fact that American ironmasters look with disfavor on any, even domestic, ores containing over 1 per cent. titanium. The possibilities of smelting titanium-bearing ores in the blast furnace are still undetermined, but the problem of their efficient reduction is becoming more important each year. There seems to be little inclination on the part of American furnace operators to tackle this problem, and they will no doubt continue to utilize the non-titanium ores at their command, leaving research and experiment to those countries not so fortunately endowed. New Zealand has, however, been intensely interested in her deposits of titanium-bearing iron sand, and during the last 50 years considerable English and New Zealand capital has been expended on this problem. The extent of the New Zealand iron-sand deposits is almost beyond measure. From Patea north to Manuka Heads, along almost the entire west coast of the North Island, these deposits exist. Wherever there is beach sand along this 300 mi. of coast line, the sand is iron bearing. It varies considerably in grade; but wherever the contour of the coast affords small bays and inlets, large dunes are found that are remarkably uniform in quality. Several of these large deposits, especially those at New Plymouth and Patea, are noted for their high iron content. The dune at New Plymouth runs between 55 and 60 per cent. of metallic iron; the panning action of the prevailing westerly winds and northwesterly currents has no doubt resulted in this concentration. Whatever the origin of this material may be, there is no doubt that deposition is going on continuously. At New Plymouth, a small artificial harbor, protected from the drifting sand by a large breakwall, has been dredged. Here sailing vessels have for years been loaded with iron sand for ballast by means of a crane and grab bucket operated from the wall of the breakwater. In a recent paper the authors1 discussed the reactions to tempering of hypereutectoid steels quenched from 1000&apos; C., as revealed by studies on changes in hardness, electrical resistivity, coercive force and metallo-graphic charaeteristics. The data, which related specifically to tempering temperatures of 550°, 650" and 710" C., for varying periods up to 125 hr., permitted the following important conclusions: 1. The rate of softening of the steels at the temperatures examined differed markedly although the steels were of "similar" general chemical composition. 2. The temperature of maximum softening spread over a range from about 650" C, to the eutectoid inversion. 3. The divergence in behavior was ascribed, at least in part, to a profound difference in tendency to graphitization on annealing at sub-eutectoid temperatures. 4. The mode of spheroidization of the cementite, as revealed by metallographic studies, also varied considerably in the different steels. The purpose of the present investigation is to pursue further the study of the difference in behavior of the steels on tempering over a wider range of temperature. To this end the following features have received particular attention: 1. Comparison of temperatures of maximum softening of the various steels when the quenched samples were tempered for 5 hi. and for 75 hr. followed by furnace cooling and by quenching in water. 2. Deterrnirlation of the effect of quenching temperature, prior to tempering, on the rate of softening. Quenching temperatures of 1000" and 850" C. were used in the investigations. 3. Examination of the microstructures obtained with the various heat-treatments employed.

Push-pull fatigue tests have been carried out at 4.2°K, 77oK, and room temperature on two poly crystalline materials of widely different stacking-fault energy (?): pure copper (? - 70 ergs per sq cm) and the Cu-8 wt pct A1 alloy (? - 2.8 ergs per sq cm). Constant stress-amplilude was imposed and measurement was made of the plastic-strain amplitude (ep) at saturation. Lives extended from 104 to 106 cycles. Designating lives at the various temperatures by NRT, N77, and N4.2. the ratios N77/NNT and N4.2/N77 ranged from 3.5 to 18 under the condition of common Ep . Metallo-graphic examination revealed different crack morphology in Cu-8 Al fatigued at room temperature, and at 77" and 4.2oK. At room temperature, cracks lay in or near grain and lain boundavies; at 77o and 4.2oK. cvacks were transcrystalline. Tests on single crystals of Cu-8 A1 showed that such a change in the cracking mode in polycrystallitle material accounted for a factor of- about 3.25 in N77/NRT . The longer life at lower tewperatztre (conslant cp) has heels attributed to two deuelopinents: a reduced production of the dislocation tangles and subgrain boundaries which serve as paths of rapid cracking, and suppression of oxygen chetni-sorption at the crack tip It was concluded that in both materials the luller accounted for an extension of the life at 4.2oK beyond that at room temperature by a factor of 15. XV ECENT experiments on the fatigue of Cu-A1 alloys in the so-called high-cycle range (greater than lo4 cycles) have emphasized the importance of stacking-fault energy (y) as a quantity affecting crack propagation rate and fatigue life.1,2 It was found in comparisons at essentially fixed plastic-strain amplitude that crack growth rate decreased by a factor of about 5 over the composition range from copper (? - 70 ergs per sq cm) to Cu-8 wt pct Al (? - 2.8 ergs per sq cm). The argument was made that, when stacking-fault energy is high, cross slip and climb are favored, so that dislocation tangles and/or subgrain boundaries form more readily under cyclic loading. Since the boundaries and tangles act as paths of rapid crack propagation ,3, 4 life is shortened as a result. However, when stacking-fault energy is reduced (as by alloying), cross slip and climb become more difficult, with the result that substructure formation is retarded and growth rate is also reduced. A purpose of the present work was to investigate the substructure effect in relation to temperature. As temperature is lowered, ? is varied only slightly (if at all), but decreased thermal activation can interfere with cross slip and climb. Thus substructure formation could be curtailed and life increased. Fatigue life in the high-cycle range is also known to be strongly influenced by environment. Working with copper, Wadsworth and Hutchings observed that life in a vacuum of 10-8 mm Hg exceeded life in air by a factor of 20.5 They isolated oxygen as the agent that furthered cracking. While the details are still unclear, a requirement in any mechanism of oxygen-accelerated cracking is that there be chemisorption at the crack tip. That could prevent welding on the compression half cycle,= interfere with reversal of slip,1, 6 or aid in breaking metal-metal bonds at the crack tip.5&apos;7 In the work being reported here, temperature was lowered by immersion in liquid nitrogen and helium, which also served to reduce both the oxygen concentration and chemisorption rate. A possible effect upon life, i.e., a lengthening, had to be recognized. Several researchers have determined fatigue lives at low temperatures presenting their results in the form of stress amplitude (S) vs cycles in life (N) curves.8-11 Such curves reflect, primarily, the fact that metal is strengthened by lowering temperature; effects of substructure and changing environment tend to be masked. The difficulty can be overcome by comparisons based on identical plastic-strain amplitudes, and in the present work the dependence of life on both plastic strain and stress amplitude was established. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The principal materials were polycrystal-line copper (? - 70 ergs per sq cm)" and the Cu-8 wt pct Al alloy (? - 2.8 ergs per sq cm),I3 the latter being near the limit of solubility of aluminum in copper and having, therefore, the lowest stacking-fault energy in the CU-Al system. Specimens were machined from 0.118-in.-diam cold-swaged rods of high-purity (99.999 pct) copper and the Cu-8 Al alloy, the latter produced initially in a graphite boat by induction vacuum melting a mixture of 99.999 pct Cu and 99.99 pct Al. The machined specimens were annealed to produce mean grain diameters of about 0.070 mm in copper and 0.190 mm in the alloy. Specimen dimensions are given in Fig. 1. Values of the tensile yield stress, ultimate strength, uniform strain (determined by the Considgre construction), and reduction of area, for both materials at 4.2oK, 77oK, and room temperature, are listed in Table I. The tensile apparatus in which these results were obtained has already been described.14 Apparatus. Specimens were fatigued in push-pull with a machine that is illustrated schematically in Fig. 2. INTRODUCTION Activated charcoal has been used for several centuries in many capacities including the recovery, isolation and purification of various materials (1). The first use of charcoal in a gold metallurgical system was in the extraction of gold after chlorination (2, 3,4). The gold was dissolved in a chlorine system and subsequently filtered through charcoal. The application of charcoal with cyanide extraction was patented by Johnston (5) in 1894 and adopted commercially in Australia in 1897. The process consisted of dissolving the gold and silver in a potassium cyanide solution and passing it through a series of charcoal filters. The charcoal was subsequently smelted to recover the gold and silver. The interest in the use of charcoal diminished in the first part of the twentieth century as the practice of the use of zinc as a precipitating agent increased. However, in 1916, the Yuanmi Mine in Australia replaced their zinc precipitation plant with a charcoal adsorption plant. In 1926, Scott and Gross (7) of the U. S. Bureau of Mines con- ducted extensive research on the adsorption of gold and silver from cyanide leach solutions. Among their findings was the result that the most important factor in improving the adsorptive power of charcoal was heat treatment with oxidation by air or steam. The work of Zadra (8) in 1952 stimulated renewed interest in the use of activated charcoal in gold and silver recovery with the development of a method of recovery of the gold and silver from the charcoal other than its destruction by burning.
