Major transverse structural zones in the western U.S. such as the Lewis and Clark line, Walker Lane, Texas lineament, and Colorado mineral belt, have localized important mineral districts. In Nevada and Utah the alinement of Cretaceous and Tertiary mineral deposits, such as in the Pioche, Eureka, Manhattan, and other mineral belts, may be related to similar tectonic features. All the mineral belts in Nevada and Utah have produced precious and base metals and tungsten; the Manhattan belt in addition has produced magnesite and brucite; and the Pioche belt, uranium, fluorspar, and alunite. Specific types of ore deposits seem related spatially to major belts of the Paleozoic Cordilleran geosyncline and compositionally to the intrusive bodies with which they are associated.

Leaching of uranium in situ from sandstone deposits with ammonium carbonate solution containing dissolved oxygen occurs rapidly compared with the leaching of the bulk of the sulfur present as FeS2. However, because of their high reducing capacity and their relative abundance, the FeS2 minerals consume the bulk of the oxidant. A pressure leach apparatus was constructed that permitted measuring oxygen consumption by FeS2, best described by a first-order reaction. The experimental rate constants for various cores are roughly proportional to their FeS2 contents.

Early work on chemical precipitation of metals from metal salt solutions is reviewed. The chemistry and thermodynamics of precipitating copper, nickel, cobalt, and cadmium metals by reaction with hydrogen are discussed. Mechanisms of metal precipitation, nucleation, growth, and agglomeration are reviewed, as well as some solubility phenomena of gases and solids at elevated temperatures. Experimental data presented deal mainly with the reaction of copper sulfate solution with Hz.

THE economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publi-cations of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photo-graphs are used on such scales as soon to 1/5,000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are inter-preted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.-The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be conveniently located and often correlated, with a large saving of time compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been established at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.

THE Tri-State zinc and lead-mining district is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the southwest corner of Missouri. The area throughout which active mining has been conducted is about 45 miles long and about 5 miles wide, extending northeasterly from Commerce, Okla., to Alba, Missouri. Although the lead ores were mined on a very small scale in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo., as early as 1848, nothing of any importance was done in the district until 1870, since when both mining and smelting have been prosecuted with considerable vigor. In the beginning the lead ores only were exploited, but within a few years extensive deposits of zinc ores were found and since that time the production of zinc ore has far exceeded that of lead. Both the surface and mineral rights in Missouri and Kansas were under individual ownership by the time ore was discovered. Although some of these rights were purchased by mining companies, most of the mining has been done under leases covering small areas, usually 40 acres, although in the past many leases were given on much smaller tracts. In Oklahoma most of the mineral land had been alloted by the Government to various Indian tribes and although the title to some of these lands had been acquired by various white men before the discovery of the rich Picher field, the title to most of the land has remained with the Indian tribes and the leasing of the mineral rights has been done by the Federal Government for the benefit of the Indians. The Indian allotments were of 200 acres each and some of the mining leases covered entire allotments, although many leases were granted for only 40 acres or even less.

Adsorption was measured for barium ion and laurate radical, using radioactively marked agents, over wide range of concentrations. Laurate adsorbed in absence of barium fails to float. With barium, flotation-effective laurate coating needs not exceed 5 pct of monolayer. Barium adsorption then is several fold larger. No barium laurate coating is obtained. IN general, fatty acids or their alkali salts do not cause clean quartz to float. However, the presence of multivalent ions, such as the alkaline-earth metal ions and heavy-metal ions, can activate quartz and thus make it respond to soap flotation. The mechanism of activation and soap flotation of quartz has been studied.'-' The problem was attacked by making flotation tests rather than by careful adsorption measurements on suspensions of ground quartz in solutions containing the activator and the collector. Attempts have been made to determine the adsorption of barium ion and calcium ion on quartz. The results have only qualitative value as the analytical methods were not adequately precise. Artificial radioactivity and progress in radioactivity detection have introduced a new analytical tool, which can have a sensitivity several orders of magnitude greater than that of other methods."-" In the experimental work described in this paper the radioactive tracers, barium 140 and carbon 14, were employed. Lauric acid was synthesized, having a radioactive carbon atom and was used with Ba" to study the adsorption of barium and laurate ions from aqueous solution on ground quartz. Flotation tests, using the vacuum flotation technique,' were run in conjunction with the adsorption experiments. The object of this investigation was to understand better the reaction mechanism of barium activation and soap flotation of quartz. Methods and Materials Quartz Sample Preparation: Lumps of hand-picked quartz, washed free of stains, were reduced in size to —20 mesh in laboratory crushers. The product was boiled in concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove the abraded iron. The cleaned product then was ground dry in a laboratory porcelain mill, using siliceous pebbles, to pass through a 200 mesh screen. The ground product was deslimed by sedimentation at 37 microns. This —200 mesh +400 mesh material was subjected again to boiling with concentrated hydrochloric acid, followed by washing with distilled water and further desliming. The cycle was repeated until no trace of iron could be detected in the wash liquor. During the final washing, the pH of the wash water was checked to insure the complete removal of the acid from the mineral. The quartz then was rinsed with conductivity water. The resulting product was dried in a drying oven and stored in mason jars. The impurities (spectrographic) were as follows: Al, 0.01 to 0.001 pct; Li, Mg, Mn, Na, each less than 0.001 pct; Fe and Cu not detected. The specific surface of the quartz sample was determined by the krypton gas adsorption method.' The average of two measurements was 881 sq cm per g. The calculated specific surface for 37/74-micron quartz particles, using a surface factor of 1.96; is 900 sq cm per g. This is in good agreement with the measured value of 881 sq cm per g. The solubility of aluminum in cryolite melts has been determined by measuring the weight loss of aluminum submerged in melts contained in closed silicon nitride crucibles. The solubility in pure cryolite has also been checked with radioactive isotopes. The solubility decreases with increasing A1203 concentration, decreasing temperature, and decreasing cryolite ratio. The change of aluminum solubility in pure cryolite with the activity controlled by using Al-Ag and A2-Cu alloys supported the assumption that aluminum would dissolve in the form of monovalent ions according to the reaction 2AI + A1' —3 A1'. DURING the electrolytic production of aluminum, the electrodeposited metal redissolves in the bath in some form and is subsequently oxidized back to the former ionic state. This dissolution is believed to cause a decrease in current efficiency. Reported data on the solubility of aluminum in cryolite melts are scattered. The mechanism of the dissolution has not yet been determined, although certain tentative interpretations have been proposed. Many previous studies were performed under different test conditions. Studies were performed in open Systems and closed systems,'o and some were apparently not given sufficient time to Saturate." The solubility can be determined either analytically or gravimetrically. The analytical determination involves measurement of hydrogen gas evolved when frozen cryolite bath saturated with aluminum is treated with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid. The gravimetric determination, adopted by many investigators,'-37'3>14 involves measurement of weight loss of the metal after equilibration with a known amount of salt. It appears that the former technique yields much smaller values of solubility than the latter technique. This large difference in results strongly suggests that the dissolved metal in the cryolite melt is no longer in the metallic state. In the present study, the solubility was determined by the gravimetric technique at various activities of aluminum using A1-Ag and Al-Cu alloys. An attempt was also made to determine the ionic (or atomic) state of the dissolved metal from the solubility data. 1) EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. Preliminary tests demonstrated that silicon nitride was suitable as a container material since it is compatible to both the fluoride melts and molten aluminum. Crucibles were made from silicon powder nitrided with Nz gas at 1600°C. The good compatibility between crucible and melts is due to the near perfect nitrogenation of silicon. Only small amounts of silicon were found in the aluminum metal after the experiments. The crucible dimensions were 90 mm inside height, 38 mm ID, 105 mm outside height, and 50 mm OD. Close-fitting lids made of silicon nitride were also prepared. The crucible was placed in a close-fitting graphite crucible heated by a vertical Kanthal furnace, Fig. l. The lid and crucible are fastened tightly together by the condensation of vaporized bath in the narrow gap between them. The temperature was measured in the wall of the graphite crucible and controlled within * 5°C. The temperature difference between the measuring point and the interior of the melts was initially determined. Materials. The materials used were: Greenland cryolite (impurities CaF,, 0.5 pct; AlzO3, 0.2 pct; high-purity aluminum metal (purity 99.99 pct); A1203 and AlF, (provided by Nippon Light Metal Co., Ltd); reagent-grade NaF and CaF2; and 99.9+ pct Ag and Cu. In his valuable report on Finishing Temperatures and Properties of Rails,l Dr. G. X. Burgess, Chief of the Division of Metallurgy, U. S. Bureau of Standards, has begun a line of investigation which should be continued by those interested in the subject, and who have proper facilities for carrying out the work. For the past year or more the Bethlehem Steel Co. has been conducting experiments to learn the effect of rail finishing temperatures on their physical properties and microstructure and the results are here given for the consideration of those interested in the rail situation. Considerable differences of opinion have been expressed by various authorities, in the past, as to the effect of large or small grain size and high or low finishing temperatures of steel rails on their physical properties and wearing qualities. Low finishing temperatures and, therefore, low shrinkage, have been advocated on the theory that the wearing qualities would be improved. Others have recommended high finishing temperatures. The generally accepted cause for rail failures, due to the development of transverse fissures, is excessive wheel pressure on hard rails. One of the causes advanced for hard rails has been that they contain too high percentages of carbon and manganese; another that the rails were finished at too low a temperature, i.e., at or near the critical point. In the experiments herein described the rails were rolled from reheated blooms. All the rail blooms were charged hot in a reheating furnace and brought up to about the original ingot-rolling temperature before rolling into rails. These rails gave better results in deflection, withstood a greater number of drops before breaking, and showed greater ductility than rails of identically the same composition and section which were rolled direct from the ingot. Rails rolled from reheated blooms, finished at somewhat higher temperatures than when rolled direct from the ingot, have a different microstructure, which the writer does not believe is due so much to the difference in finishing temperatures, as to the difference in

Several investigators, mainly concerned with the mechanical properties of the alloys, have studied the so-called aluminum bronzes after various quenching and reheating treatments. Of these works, perhaps the most complete is that of Bouldoires, who studied changes of length, electrical conductivity, thermoelectric force, hardness and micro-structure on tempering quenched alloys containing 5 to 20 per cent of aluminum, although the work of Carpenter and Edwards,² Curry13 Greenwood,4 Braesco,5 Matsuda,67 Grard8 and others has added much to our knowledge of the changes occurring during tempering. The so-called acicular ß decomposes on tempering at temperatures between 350" C. and the eutectoid, giving rise to a Widmanstätten structure of a needles in a matrix of 6 or fine a + 6, associated with an increase in hardness and almost complete loss of ductility. Matsuda studied the eutectoid transformation by means of dilatation and electrical conductivity measurements during cooling at different rates. He found that on cooling at the rate of 10" C. per minute there was a decrease in electrical resistance and in length instead of the usual increase which occurred with slow rates of cooling. On tempering the rapidly cooled samples, the increase commenced at about 400" C. and at 520" C. the resistance and length had reached the equilibrium values. These peculiarities he accounted for as being due to a transitional phase ß' being formed, ß' having an electrical resistance and volume less than either ß or a + 6. Theoretical models have been important throughout the history of engineering as a means of understanding past experiences and predicting future performance. Most modelling involves assumptions and a degree of idealization, and it is shown that it is important that the effects of these be recognized when making use of models. One of the principal concerns in underground mining is the effect of the excavations on the states of stress in the rock adjacent to these excavations. As mining proceeds to depth, stress concentrations may be sufficiently high to cause inelastic behaviour of the rock and yielding along joint surfaces. At this stage, attention must be given to the sequencing of the mining process to ensure that the ground control techniques applied are optimized. Increasing use is being made of computer modelling techniques to assist with design. Three case studies are presented to illustrate the application of computer models in mine planning and ground control. In all cases, the data available for design was limited, but the mines were fully developed and openings could be inspected. The mining methods studied are cut and fill stoping, room and pillar stoping, and longhole stoping.

AT the symposium on gases in metals held at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in New York in February, 1933, a suggestion was made1 that the term "gases in metals" as now employed is unsuitable as descriptive of the substances usually involved in that term. The Executive Committee of the Iron and Steel Division thereupon appointed a subcommittee, composed of the authors of this paper, to study the "nomenclature involved in the general subject of gases in metals, including the name itself" and to report its findings to the Executive Committee. The subcommittee decided at once to discuss the subject with an "Advisory Council" composed of representative metallurgists, metallographers and analytical and physical chemists in the Pittsburgh district.2 As a result of conferences held by the subcommittee and with the Council, a report with recommendations was submitted to the Executive Committee at an open meeting on Oct. 5, 1933, during the National Metals Congress in Detroit. The report and recommendations were accepted, and the subcommittee was instructed to proceed with the dissemination of the report for the purpose of having its recommendation generally adopted either as it was or in a modified form as a result of further discussion.

Since 1947 Preussag AG Metal1 has used a process for fuming zinc- and lead-containing dump slags and residues from vertical retorts in a half-shaft furnace at their Hüttenwerk Harz at Oker. Contrary to the classic shaft furnace, only one side of the half-shaft furnace is fitted with tuyeres. The opposite side is a bricked slope. The upper shaft section is piped. There zinc vapor and combustion gases are burned by sucked-in air. Gases and fume enter a boiler located on the rear length of the furnace via a piped fire bridge. The gases are then cooled in an air preheater prior to dedusting in a bag filter. The furnace is charged with briquettes of metal-bearing materials, coal and pitch. The leaded zinc oxide fume is comparatively rich in both lead and zinc. The copper in the feed is recovered in low-copper matte. The slag can be discarded. The Oker plant comprises 13 furnaces of 2.9 to 4.9 m length in the tuyere area. Two other plants in Italy and Spain are processing zinc leach residues by this technique. Fuming of zinc-lead-oxide ores as well as partially roasted sulfide- zinc-lead-copper bulk concentrates will be possible.

During the design phases of a conveyor system, the question arises regarding the type of drive required for each application. The paper shows that the correct drive for any particular application is the one that satisfies the criteria established for that application in the most economical manner consistent with such considerations as site location, availability of spare parts, area environmental conditions, power supplies available, etc. Following discussions of various mechanical arrangements for the drives, motor types and their characteristics are considered along with the control means of modifying these characteristics to satisfy individual requirements. These characteristics are all illustrated graphically. After selecting the motor and its starter, control accessories and interlocking arrangements as applied to material handling systems are discussed.

New Granada, or, as it is known to its people, the Republic of Colombia, occupies the northwest corner of South America, and includes the Isthmus of Panama. Although it is one of our nearest neighbors, so little is known about it in the United States that the following notes regarding it, flowing from a year's professional residence, may be timely. It is bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea and Costa Rica, on the east by Venezuela and Brazil, on the south by Brazil and Ecuador, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Its extreme geographical limits are from 2' South latitude to 12' North latitude, and from 69 to 78' East longitude. In size, therefore, it is roughly 1000 miles from north to south, and 600 miles from east to west. After many political convulsions and revolutions, and a somewhat checkered history, the country consists to-day of nine departments, Panama, Bolivar, Magdalena, Cauca, Santander, Antioquia, Tolima, Boyaca and Cundinamarca. These departments are governed from the national capital of Bogota, although each has its own capital and departmental staff. WHEN I agreed to accept your Committee's suggestion that I talk to you at this meeting on the future of copper, lead and zinc mining, I could not help wondering why I had been chosen to be a prophet. Knowing the pious nature of your committee, I thought I had better look up and see what the Bible says about being a prophet, and what the dictionary definition of a prophet is. The word "prophet" comes from the Greek and is defined as "one who speaks through a divine inspiration." Also, in the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Christ tells us that a prophet is "not without honor save in his own country and in his own house." That gave me pause until I remembered that after all, I had started my professional career as a Naval Architect, not as a Mining Engineer, and consequently, this might be a clue to the fact that the eminent geologists of this society, who know infinitely more about the world's crust than I do, were passed over in this assignment. In thinking back, I then remembered that the first really successful prophet was Noah and that Noah was a Naval Architect. Here then was the answer. One more quotation from the Bible I shall take as my text: In Ecclesiastes, chapter I, verse 9: "The thing that hath been is that which shall be." The primary purpose of this presentation is to analyze the strategies available to an operator using either stripping or stripping and subsequent punch mining on a given coal property. The initial concern is the formulation of a mathematical model, which allows an operator to determine and utilize the particular highwall height, which will maximize : (1) Total profit or (2) Profit per unit of operating time. The analysis centers on the relative costs and recoveries involved in a typical coal seam amenable to stripping, augering, and punch mining. The model defines the point to which the high-recovery stripping operation with increasing overburden removal and reclamation costs should proceed before the low-recovery augering and punch mining methods are employed so that the desired objective is achieved. Examples are presented, which exhibit the use of the model on typical operations. Present mining methods as practiced in the Eastern United States are examined in the light of the results. Recommendations for improving present strategies are made and the resulting economic ramifications are analyzed. Particular attention is given to the stripping ratios presently used and recommendations for improving present mining practice are presented. Implications of these recommendations to the design of strip mining equipment are discussed.

IT is a somewhat curious circumstance that the newest of the Institute's several awards should be conferred in the oldest of our several professional fields-for there is little question that geology and mining have antedated metallurgy and petroleum. Perhaps so did geophysics. After all, one geophysical instrument, the magnetic compass, has been success- fully employed for many centuries. Young in years the Jackling Award may be, but in distinction-whether in terms of the title it bears or in terms of the first three medalists (Reno Sales, E. D. Gardner, and the late Father Mace1wane)-the Jackling Award is already one of the ranking awards of the Institute. The name of the 1957 medalist will bring added luster to an already illustrious roll.
