The effects of many alloying eletnents on the acticity coefficient of sulfur in liquid iron have-been studied by the equilibriutn in the reaction Sfin Fe) + Hz = HzS at 1550°C'. Results are expressed in terms of a concentration variable for a nonmetallic or for a substitutional metallic solute. Activity coefficient of sulfur, defined as increased by B, Al, C, Si, Ge, Sn, P, As, Sb, Mo, W, Co, and PI. It is decreased by Cu,Au, Ti. Zr, V, h'b, Ta, Cr, ,23n, and Ni. Irulues oj. the interaction coejficient 0i = 6 In are labulated. The same interactions are expressed also in terms of atom fraction and of weight percent. The thermodynamic properties of sulfur in liquid iron have been fairly well established. Our recent paper1 reported new determinations of activity coefficient up an atom fraction of 0.12 and equations based on a careful review of all published data. The effects of alloying elements on the activity of sulfur have been studied by several investigators,2"11 especially by Morris and Williams for silicon,' by Morris and Buehl for carbon,~ and by Sherman and Chipman for manganese. phosphorus, and al~minum.~ However, the effects of some important alloying elements remain to be determined. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of many alloying elements on the activity of sulfur in Fe-S-j ternary systems. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD This study was based on experimental determination of equilibrium in the reaction at 1550°C: The same apparatus and procedure as described in our previous paper have been retained, and the same corrections were applied for dissociation of H2S. The alumina crucibles used in the experiments consisted of four separate compartments. In a given experimental run. kach of three alumina crucibles held four different samples of about 3 g each which reached equilibrium in the same gas atmosphere and temperature. The charges were made up of electrolytic iron, pure iron sulfide, and desired alloying elements, which were pure metal or master alloys made in the laboratory. The weighed samples were held for 4 to 12 hr in the prepared atmosphere at 1550°C. They were then low- ered to be cooled as quickly as possible. The quenched metal beads were crushed to avoid the errors of segregation in the ingot. The sulfur content was determined gravimetrically and alloy content by appropriate chemical analysis. CALCULATIONS The apparent equilibrium constants of Eq. [I] are expressed as follows from the corrected gas ratios and sulfur concentrations: The term K" is the observed equilibrium constant in any given ternary solution, K' is the value for the Fe-S binary solution. and the limiting value of K' in the infinitely dilute solution is designated by K, which is the true equilibrium constant in Eq. [I]. In the thermodynamic treatment of nonmetallic elements in a metallic solution, it has been suggested1' that the lattice ratio has certain advantages over other variables to express the concentration of solute. In interstitial solid solutions the lattice ratio zj is proportional to the ratio of filled interstitial sites to those which remain unfilled. The equations derived for the activity of the solute using zj as the concentration variable are found also to be applicable to liquid solutions containing nonmetallic solutes when the nonmetal is treated as if it were interstitial. For this purpose we adopt the following definitions: The quantity vj which is negative for interstitial solutes is taken as -1 for nonmetallic and +1 for metallic solutes. For purposes of calculation however ; j may be assigned a value which results in a linear relation such as shown in Figs. 1 to 15. The activity coefficient of sulfur, Qs, and equilibrium constant. The strutural and cr~stallo~aphic features of the plates of austenite produced by the martensite to aus-tenite or reverse martensitic tramformation have been determined in an Fe-33 wt pct Ni alloy. Micro-focus X-ray techniques and single-surface trace analysis 072 bulk samples yielded two distinct habit planes, (0.174, 0.309, 0.~35)~ and (0.375, 0.545, 0.749jM. The former plane uas the one predorninantly observed and its existence was verified by transn~ission electron microscopy. The orientation relation-ship between the reversed austenite and the parent martensite was approximately the same as the Nishiyamna and other relationships reported for the direct tramformation. Replica and thin-joil obser-vations show that both high densities of tangled dis-locations and occasional twins constitute the fine structure of the reversed austenite. Application of the phenomenological theory to a variant of the predominant habit plane defines an irrational plane and direction for the second shear in accordance with the comnplexity of the fine structure. The shear accompanying the reverse martensitic transformation is at least 0.51, the maximnum value of- the tangent oJ the tilt angle measured on surface replicas. A mechanism relating the fine transformation twins in martensite to the nucleation of reversed austenite of the predominant habit is proposed. The reversal of Fe-Ni martensite takes place both at the edges of martensite plates and in a piecewise fashion within them.' The shear-type nature of the reverse transformation is verified by the surface relief which accompanies both edge-type reversal2 and the fragmentation of plates of martensite' as a result of rapid heating above the A, (austenite start temperature). The orientation relationship between the edge-type reversal product and the parent martensite, as determined by transmission electron microscopy, is reported to be within 4 deg of either the Kurdyumov-Sachs or Nishiyama relationships,' but there is no work at present in the literature relating to the crystallography of the platelike reversed austenite. The fine structure of reversed austenite after heating to 50°C above the Af is reported4 to be composed primarily of tangled and jogged dislocations in concentrations up to 10" per sq cm. A replica investigation of partially reversed Fe-Ni martensites5 corroborates the increase in dislocation density following reversal and presents indications of other possible modes of fine structure. This paper reports on an investigation performed to examine in detail the morphology and crystallography of the plates of reversed austenite and the shear which accompanies their formation in a matrix of Fe-Ni martensite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Discs of a high-purity Fe-32.9 wt pct Ni single crystal served as the starting material. The single crystal had been produced in the course of an earlier investigation6 and the carbon content was determined at the time to be 0.006 wt pct. The M,, and the A,, were respectively -120" and 300°C. Partial transformation to martensite was performed at -125°C and reversal of some of the martensite was accomplished by heating in the temperature range 340" to 355°C. Most samples were heated to the reversal temperature by immersion' in a salt bath for 2 min. For surface-relief studies some polished and etched Samples were heated in a tube furnace for ten min in a hydrogen atmosphere maintained over the samples throughout the heating and cooling cycles. Samples were prepared for metallographic examination by electropolishing and etching with an HC1-HNOs-H20 et~hant.~ On one of the surface-relief samples two sets of fiducial scratches were placed on the etched sample by drawing it over a slurry of 0.06 p alumina on a "microclothJ'. The orientations of individual plates of martensite were determined by X-ray analysis. A Rigaku-Denki microbeam X-ray generator in conjunction with a Micro-Laue camera with facility for precision location of the sample in front of the beam was employed for this purpose. The collimator size was 30 p and the specimen to film distance was 5 mm. The Laue photograms were enlarged to an equivalent 3-cm specimen to film distance for analysis. The orientation of each of the plates of martensite was compared to that of the parent austenite and the relationship be -tween the two phases was, in all cases, within a few degrees of those predicted for the direct transformation. The orientation relationship between one of the larger plates of reversed austenite and its parent martensite was determined in a similar manner. The habit plane of the islands of reversed austenite in the X-rayed plates of martensite was determined by a single-surface trace analysis. Each reversal island had with the parent phase one comparatively straight boundary which was presumed to represent the habit plane trace. The pole locus technique7 was applied to traces from six different plates of martensite to determine the indices of the habit plane. A 40-cm stereographic net was employed for this analysis The morphology and fine structure of the reversed austenite were studied by electron microscopy of pre-shadowed direct carbon replicas,5 and the macroscopic shear was evaluated by a two-stage replica technique similar to that employed in electron fractog-

A dynamic photoelastic analysis of stress waves interacting with a free surface is described. The free surface is that of a bench with a fixed bottom so common in quarry applications. The stress waves are generated by line charges of lead azide (Pb N,). Four models of identical geometry are investigated with the direction of detonation of the line charge varied between the four models. Dynamic photoelastic patterns are recorded and analyzed to indicate which method of detonating the line charge produced the largest magnitude of tension at the free surface. The mechanics of rock breakage by means of explosives has received considerable treatment by many investigators including Duvall, Obert, Broberg, Rinehart, and Langefors1-11 over the past two decades. Indeed in more recent years several texts12-15 have been written on the topic, treating a wide variety of subjects which are logically related to the modern technique of rock blasting. In rock blasting the chemical energy of a concentrated explosive contained in a relatively small diameter borehole is utilized to fragment the rock. The explosive is transformed into a gas with enormous pressures which exceed 10-5 bars18 This high pressure shatters the rock in the area adjacent to the borehole and produces dilatational and distortional stress waves which propagate radially away from the borehole. The state of stress associated with these outgoing waves produces a system of cracks which extend for a few feet from the borehole. The breakage produced in this manner is limited as the dynamic stress in the pulse attenuates markedly with distance. In the absence of a free surface, the stress wave propagates away from the source without further fracture. With a free face of rock near the drill hole, another mode of breakage occurs which is due to scabbing failure of the layer of rock adjacent to the free face. These scabbing failures are produced by the reflection of the incident waves and the conversion of compressive stresses into tensile stresses sufficiently large to fracture the rock. The detailed nature of the interaction of the stress waves with the free surface is complex and difficult to treat analytically. However, dynamic photoelasticity offers an experimental approach which gives a fullfield visual display of propagating stress waves and the reflection process. Applications of static photoelasticity to solution of problems related to mining technology have become relatively common (see, for instance, Refs. 17 and 18) with a plastic model loaded to produce a state of stress representative of that occurring in the workings of a mine. The application of dynamic photoelasticity is ex tremely limited. Tandanand and Hartman19 have used a multiple spark camera to study fracture in glass and plastic plates impacted by a chisel-shaped tool. This paper describes a dynamic photoelastic analysis of stress waves interacting with a free surface. The free surface is that of a bench with a fixed bottom so common in quarry applications. Experimental Procedure The model illustrated in [Fig. 1] was fabricated from a sheet of Columbia Resin CR-39 to represent a bench with a fixed bottom. Properties of the CR-39 pertaining to these dynamic experiments are listed in [Table 1]. Scribe lines on 1-in. centers are used to identify locations along the bench face. The bench height was 8 in., the burden was 3 in., and the overall dimensions of the sheet, 16 and 18 in., were large enough to eliminate reflections from nonessential boundaries during the period of observation of the dynamic event. To simulate a charge in a borehole, a groove 0.062 in. wide and 0.080 in. deep groove was cut into the sheet from one side. The lower end of the groove was 1 in. or 1/3 the burden distance below the bottom of the bench. The upper end of the groove was 3 in. or one times the burden distance below the upper level of the bench. The groove was packed with 60 mg of Pb No per in. of length, and ignited with a bridge wire detonator. Four different ignition procedures were used to examine the effects of detonation direction on the stress wave interaction with the free face of the bench. In Test 1 the line charge was ignited at the top and the line charge detonated downward. In Test 2 the line charge was ignited at the bottom and the charge burned upward. In Test 3 the charge was ignited in the center with the top half burning upward and the bottom half burning downward. Finally in Test 4 the line charge was ignited at both ends simultaneously. Sixteen high-speed photographs of the photoelastic fringe patterns representing the stress wave propagation were recorded for each of the tests. A Cranz-Schardin multiple spark gap camera 20,21 was operated at framing rates which were systematically varied from 110,000 to 250,000 frames per sec during each test.

Extra-low carbon iron sheet, when deformed and annealed, undergoes exaggerated or abnormal grain growth in the critically deformed regions of the sheet. This exaggerated pmth occurs, for low strains (3 to 6 pct), only in sheet which has a fine dispersion of precipitates in the subsurface region of the sheet and fewer and coarser precipitates in the sheet interior. These particles have been identified as manganese sulfides. Wing the anneal, grains near the surface are gvowth-inhibited by the fine particles but the grains in the interior are free to grow normally. With the additional driving force provided by the strain energy, the interior grains first grow into the small subsurface pains. Eventually, these growing grains grow completely through the sheet. Calculations of limiting grain sizes at various values of strain indicate that a volume fraction of precipitates in excess of 10-' would be required to eliminate exaggerated growth in material strained to 10 pct. OPEN-COIL annealing has made decarburization of sheet steel both efficient and economically practical. Use of such material for porcelain-enameling stock is one of many possible applications of low-carbon iron since carbon in steel is deleterious to porcelain-enameling properties.' However, the extra-low carbon iron presently available presents another problem, that of exaggerated grain growth in regions where the sheet has been deformed as by bending or stretching. In exaggerated grain growth a few grains start to absorb their neighbors and these may become very much larger than the average grains of the sheet. Other names for exaggerated grain growth are coarsening, critical grain growth, secondary recrystallization, abnormal grain growth, or discontinuous grain growth. While this grain growth does not affect the enameling qualities of the low-carbon iron sheet, their presence results in a marked reduction of tensile-yield strength in the region of the sheet containing the large grains. The loss of tensile yield strength may render the material unsuitable for many applications . This report describes the results of a study undertaken to determine the cause of the exaggerated grab growth in extra-1ow carbon iron and, if possi- ble, to prescribe practical procedures for its prevention. GENERAL THEORY The driving force for exaggerated grain growth is the grain boundary free energy. This driving force is proportional to (l/rl + l/r2) where rl and r2 are the mutually perpendicular radii of curvature of the boundary between the growing grain and the grain being consumed. Thus, the greater the difference in size between the growing grain and the matrix grains, the higher the driving force for grain growth. If, however, the matrix grains are free to grow simultaneously, the driving force for exaggerated growth will be diminished. Stability toward growth of the matrix grains may be caused by a) a strong single orientation texture (texture inhibition),' b) a dispersed second phase,3"5 c) the thickness effect,' or d) intergranular segregation.7"9 As exaggerated growth occurs when growth of the matrix grains has been slowed by the stabilizing processes mentioned above, there must be an additional factor acting to promote growth of a few of the grains to the point where they are enough larger than the matrix grains that boundary energy driving forces are sufficient to cause continued growth. For instance, at the annealing temperature, growth-inhibiting inclusions may slowly dissolve and coalesce. Eventually, a grain boundary becomes unlocked and migration occurs at the expense of neighboring grains. Or, an additional driving force may be supplied to some of the grains if the material is strained. Then, since some grains will be strained less than others, the difference in strain energy between adjacent grains may be sufficient to overcome boundary locking and allow growth of the grains with lower strain energies. In the present study, therefore, such factors as the presence or absence of dispersed phases, the nature of the exaggerated growth, and the effect of strain have been considered. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE I) Material and Processing. THE Sydney coal field, the largest and most valuable in Nova Scotia, is situated on the northeastern coast of the Island of Cape Breton, extending from Mira Bay on the south to Cape Dauphin on the north, a distance of 30 miles, and has a general dip northeast under the sea. (Fig. 1.) The field embraces the mining villages of Morien, Birchgrove and Reserve and the towns of Dominion, Glace Bay, Waterford and Sydney Mines. The city of Sydney is situated about midway between the northern and southern extremities of the field and on the western fringe of the productive coal measures. Sydney harbor crosses the coal field, cutting off direct rail connection between Sydney Mines and the greater part of the field to the southeast. (Fig. 2.) The coal measures are exposed in the cliffs on the coast line, which rise to an average height of 30 ft., and are almost continuous throughout the length of the field. The portion of the coal field under land forms a small segment of a circle, the greatest distance from the coast landwards is 9 miles, and it occupies an area of 200 sq. miles. The greatest distance developed seawards from the shore by mining operations is 2 ¼ miles. The strata maintain a regularity of dip at this distance, proving a submarine area of about 70 sq. miles. How much further the coal field extends seawards is unknown, but the indications are that it extends far beyond the present economical working limit and in all probability there is a vast submarine coal field. The productive coal measures are of Carboniferous age, these being underlaid by beds of sandstone, locally classed as millstone grit, which define the southern limit of the field,, while a spur of syenitic hills cuts off the coal-bearing strata on the north. Two main anticlinal folds having a general course easterly divide the field into three basins named from north to south: Sydney Mines-Lingan, Glace Bay and Morien.

The time allotted to this paper will permit only the sketching of general principles and practice as generally employed in the industry to maintain and preserve the physical well-being of the miner and his family. Let it be emphasized on behalf of the industry that coal opera- . tors, individually and collectively, have given primary consideration to the appointment of a mine or community physician who is charged with the responsibility of caring for the sick and injured. However, it too frequently happens that with the selection or appointment of the camp doctor many operators wash their hands of further responsibility toward the health and the working efficiency of their employees. The coal industry is so organized in most of the coal-producing areas that not only is the health of the individual miner an important production problem but the collective health of the entire mining community is a fundamental operating problem. This is particularly demonstrated when epidemics of communicable diseases attack entire communities, with resultant loss of life and production and general community distress. The problem and responsibility of maintaining high health standards among miners and their families should be given as much consideration as safety, economical production and efficient distribution are given in the successful operation of coal mines. Company Policy In the inauguration or administration of a medical program for a large mining operation or for an individual mine, the first question to be solved is what the company policy is to be with respect to the following factors pertinent to a medical program: 1. On what basis will the company and the employees finance the program ? 2. Should a contract doctor or a full-time doctor on salary be employed ? 3. What measure of service is to be rendered the employee and his family in return for his monthly contribution to the medical program?

Oil production in north Louisiana in 1938 was 28,442,910 bbl., a decrease of 225,160 bbl., or less than 1 per cent, from 1937. The principal increases were at Cotton Valley, Lisbon and Zwolle. The greatest decrease was at Rodessa, with small normal declines in production of the old settled fields. Natural gas production from gas wells declined 15.9 per cent from 1937, but casinghead gas increased, so the decline in total production was only 6.9 per cent. Decline in completions was due to lack of proven areas for drilling, as well as price and marketing difficulties; and wildcat activity mas also less than in 1937. The increase in number of dry holes was due chiefly to shallow drilling in the old Caddo and Zwolle fields. Most important events in 1938 were the discovery of the Shreveport deep oil and gas field, extension of the Logansport gas-distillate field into Louisiana, development of oil production in the Bodeaw zone on the flanks of Cotton Valley, opening of deep gas-distillate production at Shongaloo, and completion of one well in a deeper horizon at Bluc Lake (Zwolle field). Geological Notes The deep drilling done in 1938 did not cause any important changes in geological correlation and nomenclature of the formations below the Upper or Gulf Cretaceous. The stratigraphic section of the Lower Cretaceous and deeper beds, with names used in the accompanying tables, as approved a year ago by the Shreveport Geological Society, is as follows:

The theory of a zonal deposition of ores from ascending solutions which were differentiation products of a cooling magma, first propounded by Spurr,l in a measure explained by Lindgren,2 and recently re-emphasized by kemp,3 while perhaps accepted in principle by many mining geologists, so far has not been accepted as capable of practical application in the study and development of ore deposits. From his observations, the writer is convinced that there are laws governing the primary deposition of ores which, when properly worked out, will be of greatest economic value; and that the application of this knowledge to the development of new mines will mark an advance in the mining industry similar to that following the working out and application of the theory of secondary enriehiment. That there has been a tendency to a zonal distribution in the formation of ore deposits, by which the ores of one metal have been precipitated from tile mincralizing solutiolis at a greater distance from the source than those of another, cannot be disputed; and the nature of this zoning in a given deposit or district has been frequently described.4 But that a selection precipitation of the ores of two or more metals, other than lead and zinc, in successive zones may have taken place in a single deposit within limits economically possible of exploration is not generally recognized or admitted.

IN the Northern Rhodesia copper fields the size of the orebodies and the exceptionally consistent values over great distances made it possible to outline the ore with drill holes spaced at 1000-ft. intervals; in some cases, 2000-ft. intervals.. Owing to the fact that the size of the deposits made it very evident that much outside capital would have to be called in to develop them and, owing to the wide spacing of the holes, it was essential that the sampling of drill holes be as accurate as possible, so that outside examining engineers could adopt the results as trustworthy within the limits of accuracy of the drilling method. With this object in view, the field staffs of the Selection Trust group of companies have studied for the past three years, and are still studying, drill sampling in a very thorough manner, and for this reason it is felt that these notes may be of interest to engineers or students who are, or in the future may be, in charge of drilling operations. The orebodies in this field lie in shales and sandstones, more or less indurated, in the lower strata of the Roan series, and the copper mineralization is in the form of sulfides predominantly, with some oxidized copper minerals. Those interested in the geology and history of the area can find full details in a recent paper by Anton Gray and Russell J. Parker.1

The effect of temperature as a parameter in ore flotation has not been systematically studied, although for some ores it has been known for many years that selectivity and grade of concentrates can be improved by conditioning or flotation at moderately or substantially elevated temperatures. In 1934 Coghill and Clemmer' stated that "elevated temperature seems to make hard water more tolerable" in soap flotation, and a cursory examination of the literature indicates that some earlier investigators were aware of beneficial results obtained by floating above room or mill-water temperatures. Tartaron,' Mitchell et al.,3 and particularly Hamilton et al." have shown that high pulp temperatures give high recovery and selectivity in soap flotation of fluorite from a variety of gangue minerals. As a result of the work of these and of other investigators, high-temperature flotation has been successfully applied to industrial flotation of fluorite. Falconer" stated: "The use of high temperature conditioning (above 35°C and preferably above 60°C) in connection with the soap flotation of nonsulphide ores, as covered in B. Kalinowski's French Patent No. 847,- 215, Dec. 7, 1938, is claimed to provide more intense activation, better separation of values from gangue, and reduction in quantity of reagents." The various investigations quoted above clearly demonstrate the improvements to be realized by increasing the temperature at which fluorite is floated, and it is surprising that little or no information has been published on systematic investigation of the same method as applied to other ores.

The V system of mining used at the Norton mine of West Virginia Coal & Coke Co. was designed as a modified long wall with face conveyors, for use under roof conditions that would not permit regular long-wall methods. This mine is in the Lower Kittanning seam, which averages about 6 ft. in height. There is from 20 to 30 ft. of slate and shale immediately over the coal and above this is a bed of sandstone 40 ft. or more thick; the total cover will vary from 50 to 250 ft. THE Anaconda company has never indulged in any employee activities at Butte which might be termed paternalistic, but it has exerted a vast amount of effort in care of its employees during working hours. The reason for this policy is not lack of interest or that the company does not feel the effect of employees' activities while they are "off the job"; it is that the company and the city of Butte have grown up together and, each has been adequate in its own sphere, the company in providing employment at the highest possible wage and the city in providing housing, sanitation, commercial services, medical services, schools, churches, amusements and entertainments. The one exception to this independence between the company and the community is the Butte Water Co., which is a wholly owned sub-sidiary of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mention of this relationship is made here because the water supply of such a city as Butte is one of the principal factors in determining the health of the people. Very early in the development of the Anaconda company an adequate and dependable water supply for the operations became necessary, therefore the company took over this important community function. So well has this activity worked out that during the whole period of time covered, in which the company has expanded to become practically the sole mine operator and the community has grown from a small mining camp to the status of a modern city, there has been no shortage of water or any outbreak of water-borne, epidemic disease.

PRESIDENT DOWLING'S ? ADDRESS I feel that it is a great honor to be invited to reply to this toast on behalf of the Canadian Mining Institute. I wish to thank you for your very cordial reception of the toast and for the sentiments expressed in your invitation to the Institute to cooperate in a series of joint meetings. It is an earnest of the mutual regard which the peoples of the two countries have for each other. We have been allies in a very great war and the feelings of good-will engendered by that alliance will survive, I believe, through the strenuous times of peace. The other nations of the alliance had through many changes in history, fought each other and for each other and had thereby gained a clear conception of the social aims and moral character of their peoples. With this knowledge came mutual trust-the one element necessary for united action or lasting agreement. On this continent the two peoples are drawn together by bonds of a common origin and, largely, a common language. No war has been necessary to force declarations of national aims on which to base terms of amity and now our peoples who had studied the arts of peace together have together passed through fire-drawn into the conflict by a like horror at the sacrilege of the crucifixion of the rights of humanity. Their courage and manhood has been tested at Ypres and Chateau Thiery by the great assayer war, and, together, with thankful hearts we see the triumph of right over night and better than ever know that we have the same conception of the government of the people for the people. We are met to celebrate the close of the association of our brethren it the front in the fight for freedom for the world-a freedom that to us hems natural but which to the majority of the allied nations is a heritage derived from the protest made by the American colonies against German ideas of government of which remnants had until then survived in Great Britain.

THE copper mines of the Katanga region in the Belgian Congo lie along the same mineralized belt as those of Northern Rhodesia. There are two distinct types of deposits in that belt, the dolomitic and the quartzitic. In the dolomitic type the metallic minerals are found in a dolomitic limestone country rock. Through oxidation and enrichment, large deposits of high-grade oxidized copper ores were formed, some of which are being worked by the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga. Such deposits are all in Katanga. The quartzitic deposits are found in Katanga and Northern Rhodesia. Here the primary mineralization occurred in sandstones and quartzites, in horizons stratigraphically lower than the dolomites. These rocks are not favorable to secondary enrichment and the oxidized zone is poorer than the sulphide zone, which alone contains the ore. There are also in Katanga a few ore-bearing veins. One of them is being worked in the Prince Leopold mine at Kipushi.

Through close cooperation with geophysical and geological test work by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in Beaufort County, the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory assisted in the evaluation of North Carolina's most valuable mineral resource, the Pungo River phosphate deposit. After a core evaluation study, the flotation process for the concentration of North Carolina phosphate was demonstrated in a 500-lb per hr pilot plant in Asheville. Tonnage samples of phosphate concentrate were produced for customer evaluation in the United States, Europe, and the Far East. Plans for a larger pilot plant to be erected at the plant site at Lee Creek were prepared for TGS. The larger pilot plant was operated by TGS in conjunction with a test dredging operation which led to the adoption of a dragline dry mining method to move 90,000 tpd of material for the production of 10,000 tpd of phosphate concentrate in the all-flotation phosphate concentrator. Calcining, dry grinding, and byproduct studies complimented the construction of one of the world's largest and most modern fertilizer raw-feed complexes on the eastern North Carolina seaboard.

I FEAR that my treatment of this subject may not, in all instances, meet the approval of those who read my opinion as to the utility and efficiency of pyrometers in the making of glass, or bottle-glass. It may be superfluous for me to add that this opening statement is based on over 15 years' experience in an endeavor to successfully apply pyrometers, or heat-measuring instruments, to glass-melting furnaces, particularly the type known as tank-furnaces, and that such endeavors have proved more or less futile. It is my desire, therefore, to herein set forth the problems encountered, hoping thereby to stimulate further effort in the successful application of pyrometers. It is my desire, also, to invite criticism of the methods used and suggestions from those who may have a wider experience, or who may have better methods. Fin. 1.-GLASS TANK FURNACE. In general, I believe that the inefficient application of pyrometry to the melting of glass in tank furnaces is not due as much to the instruments as to the conditions under which they must be used and the character of the medium in which they must reside. Most of those present no doubt, are familiar, at least in a general way, with the methods and apparatus used in the melting and making of bottle-glass, or glass that is formed into containers of various shapes and designs. Most of this glass is made in what is known as a tank furnace, these furnaces vary widely in design and construction. In general, they consist of a rectangular tank-like form, built up of fireclay blocks, and range from 2 by 4 ft. (0.6 by 1.2 m.) to 24 by 140 ft. (7.3 by 42.6 m.) with a depth of glass from 2 to 5 ft.; or a capacity of from approximately. 2 to 700 tons. Fig. 1 shows the general

The process of leaching silver ores with sodium hyposulphite is comparatively new, and published accounts of the details and losses of the process are as yet very few. The following account of a careful series of experiments to determine the actual loss in this process may therefore be acceptable to members of the Institute. The ore treated was highly calcareous, and the principal sulphide present was iron pyrites. Following is an analysis by Professor Price, of San Francisco, of the ore treated : Per cent. In order to feel our way with this ore, two experimental or "pilot" charges were roasted. Pilot Charge No. 1. Treated 1000 pounds in a four-hearth reverberatory. 8.30 p.m.—Entered fourth hearth, remaining there one and onehalf hours; sulphur began to burn. 10 p.m.—Changed to third hearth; ore became red-hot half an hour after entering; the fireplace was kept almost destitute of fuel. 2.30 A.M.—Changed to second hearth. Charge continued, giving off a large quantity of sulphurous fume; the fireplace was kept dark.

The time allotted to this paper will permit only the sketching of general principles and practice as generally employed in the industry to maintain and preserve the physical well-being of the miner and his family. Let it be emphasized on behalf of the industry that coal opera- . tors, individually and collectively, have given primary consideration to the appointment of a mine or community physician who is charged with the responsibility of caring for the sick and injured. However, it too frequently happens that with the selection or appointment of the camp doctor many operators wash their hands of further responsibility toward the health and the working efficiency of their employees. The coal industry is so organized in most of the coal-producing areas that not only is the health of the individual miner an important production problem but the collective health of the entire mining community is a fundamental operating problem. This is particularly demonstrated when epidemics of communicable diseases attack entire communities, with resultant loss of life and production and general community distress. The problem and responsibility of maintaining high health standards among miners and their families should be given as much consideration as safety, economical production and efficient distribution are given in the successful operation of coal mines. Company Policy In the inauguration or administration of a medical program for a large mining operation or for an individual mine, the first question to be solved is what the company policy is to be with respect to the following factors pertinent to a medical program: 1. On what basis will the company and the employees finance the program ? 2. Should a contract doctor or a full-time doctor on salary be employed ? 3. What measure of service is to be rendered the employee and his family in return for his monthly contribution to the medical program?

A choosy in what they would smelt. The furnace charge had to be coarse, and it had to be rich. They discarded fines in excess of about 1/10 the total weight. They wanted 10% copper content and fussed about anything with as low as 5%. They concentrated the copper content of the charge as much as they could by prior selection. They roasted off enough sulfur to further enrich the copper content of the succeeding fall of matte (a melt of cuprous and ferrous sulfides or Cu2S.FeS). Then they desulfurized the iron and fluxed it by carefully adding silica (quartz, not silicates) for a slag of lower density than the cuprous sulfide (Cu2S or white metal). After skimming off the slag, they further desulfurized the white metal by blowing the molten bath with compressed air. The result was blister copper. Yesterday Their techniques and furnaces? Some experimented with mechanically rabbled roasters, but their standard roasting practice was burning coarse sulfide ore in 250-ton heaps. These heaps, approximately 24 x 24 x 6 ft, were burned for about 75 days down to 6-10% sulfur. The turnaround time for a given roasting position was 100 days. Assuming the base was a hearth, the calculated rate of treatment was on the order of 0.004 tpd per sq ft.

Oil production in north Louisiana in 1938 was 28,442,910 bbl., a decrease of 225,160 bbl., or less than 1 per cent, from 1937. The principal increases were at Cotton Valley, Lisbon and Zwolle. The greatest decrease was at Rodessa, with small normal declines in production of the old settled fields. Natural gas production from gas wells declined 15.9 per cent from 1937, but casinghead gas increased, so the decline in total production was only 6.9 per cent. Decline in completions was due to lack of proven areas for drilling, as well as price and marketing difficulties; and wildcat activity mas also less than in 1937. The increase in number of dry holes was due chiefly to shallow drilling in the old Caddo and Zwolle fields. Most important events in 1938 were the discovery of the Shreveport deep oil and gas field, extension of the Logansport gas-distillate field into Louisiana, development of oil production in the Bodeaw zone on the flanks of Cotton Valley, opening of deep gas-distillate production at Shongaloo, and completion of one well in a deeper horizon at Bluc Lake (Zwolle field). Geological Notes The deep drilling done in 1938 did not cause any important changes in geological correlation and nomenclature of the formations below the Upper or Gulf Cretaceous. The stratigraphic section of the Lower Cretaceous and deeper beds, with names used in the accompanying tables, as approved a year ago by the Shreveport Geological Society, is as follows:
