An experiment substituting pneumatic crawler drills for large-diameter rotary rigs in overburden stripping operations has indicated significant bit cost savings for Perry and Hylton Coal Co., Beckley, W. Va. The test was conducted in the Egeria Mountains (part of the Appalachian Range), where about 30 m (100 ft) of overburden consisting of hard, seamy sandstone and shale must be removed to recover a 560-mm (22-in.) vein. Perry and Hylton operates ten surface mines and is presently developing three more for start-up in the near future. The company follows a progressive policy toward ecological concerns, incorporating a self-imposed systematic mining and reclamation program for mined lands which leaves the landscape in a suitable condition for further development by local communities.

GEORGIUS AGRICOLA was not only the author of works on Mining and allied subjects, usually asso ciated with his name, but he also interested himself to some extent in political and religious subjects. For convenience in discussion we may, therefore, divide his writings on the broad lines of (1) works on mining, geology, mineralogy, and allied subjects; (2) works on other subjects, medical, religious, critical, political, and historical. In respect especially to the first division, and partially with regard to the others, we find three principal cases : (a) Works which can be authenticated in European libraries today ; (b) references to editions of these in bibliographies, catalogues, etc., which we have been unable to authenticate ; and (c) references to works either unpublished or lost. Computer use in mine planning has evolved from theory to practical application at the Bingham mine of Kennecott Copper Corp.’s Utah Copper Division. Traditional mine planning methods have been combined with computer technology to produce a more realistic calculation of ore reserves and mining plans. The techniques used are not revolutionary but are an expansion of previous mine planning methods using the calculating power of the computer. These methods can readily be adapted for planning use by practical mining men.

September steel production established a new record for a 30-day month with 9,034,000 tons. It was the highest of any month since March. Output of ingots and steel for castings was 535,000 tons more than was poured in August 1952, and 373,000 tons over the total for September 1951. Prime Minister Daniel F. Malan touched a gold button to start South Africa' a first uranium plant into production on the premises of the West Rand Consolidated Gold Mine, near Krugersdorp, Transvaal, 25 miles west of Johannesburg. Uranium oxide is being extracted from mine tailing after removal of the gold. Thirteen gold mines in the region are scheduled for uranium production. Defense Materials Procurement Agency signed an agreement-with the Bagdad Copper Corp., Bagdad. Ariz., for expansion of the firm's facilities to enable delivery of at least 27 million lb of copper a year and 91,0000 lb of molybdenite. It is said that the company will spend about E million on the expansion.

In the technical literature of 1965 and 1966, there were several papers about future power for mining and construction equipment. Most of these papers made the same predictions: •More power •Better reliability and durability •Ease of service and maintenance •Operating economy •The possibility of future environmental concern •The entrance of the gas turbine In the five years that have since passed, some of the 1965-66 predictions have at least partially come true, while others have not been fully realized. Actually the list still appears sound today. Priorities may have changed and details may be different, but the main points cover the requirements for future prime movers quite well.

Manganese silver ores are well known to be refractory toward cyanidation. Roasting and sulfurous acid pre-leaching have been suggested for improving their amenability. This paper describes the development and implementation of the sulfurous acid pre-leach process for retreatment of manganese silver tailings at Tonopah, Nevada. The history of the material is summarized and the mineralogy is described. A brief review of an earlier application of sulfurous acid pre-leaching of a manganese silver ore is presented.

The object of this paper is to describe some efforts and observations by the writer relating to this subject. Althongh the usual type of' blast-furnace is a most efficient device for smelting and melting purposes, it is not suitable for utilizing the cheaper grades of fuel, such as coal-slack and certain gaseous fuels. This problem not only involves the consideration of the furnace as a suitable apparatus, but also embraces the consideration of the chemical and calorific properties of the proposed fuel. In the hearth of the ordinary blast-furnace an extremely high temperature is maintained. This extreme temperature is due to the complete combustion of the fuel in the hearth, and before the gases reach the zone of fusion their temperature is reduced, by the absorption of carbon, 2300 degrees Fat). Today, the favored option for disposal of high-level nuclear wastes is their burial in mined caverns. As an alternative, the concept of deep disposal by rock melting (DRM) also has received some attention. DRM entails the injection of waste, in a cavity or borehole, 2 to 3 kilometers down in the earth crust. Granitic rocks are the prime candidate medium. The high thermal loading initially will melt the rock surrounding the waste. Following resolidification, a rock/waste matrix is formed, which should provide isolation for many years. The complex thermal, mechanical, and hydraulic aspects of DRM can be studied best by means of numerical models. The models must accommo¬date the coupling of the physical processes involved, and the temper¬ature dependency of the granite properties, some of which are subject to abrupt discontinuities, during [a]- ß phase transition and melting. This paper outlines a strategy for such complex modeling.

Commercial coke is made to-day in the United States chiefly from the Appalachian, the Illinois and the Colorado coal-fields. The measures of the great Appalachian coal-fields furnish by far the largest proportion, only about 1 per cent. coming from those of Illinois and Colorado. This is not due, however, to a corresponding difference in area. The Illinois field covers about 47,000 square miles in Illinois, Southern Indiana and Western Kentucky. The coal is high in both ash and sulphur, and on this account nearly all the attempts which have been made from time to time to coke it have resulted in failure, so far at least as the requirements of ironmasters are concerned. In Mindola mine on the Zambian Copperbelt, there is a plan to extend the current production level of 1.2- 1.5 km (3,900-4,900 ft) with five additional production levels. Research work indicated that the present total heat output of 38.6 MW will inevitably increase to 63.2 MW in 25 years. Estimated WE and DB temperatures, representing the total heat generation in stope faces and development headings during these same periods are predicted to increase to 33.8/40.2°C (93/104°F) and 35.3/42.1°C (95/108°F) respectively. It is assessed that the nominal refrigeration capacity needs to be progressively increased to 9,000 M W.

In view of the recent important discussions before this Institute on the genesis of metalliferous deposits, certain features in the occurrence of gold which seem to be more clearly developed in Brazil than elsewhere can hardly fail to be of interest. SINCE my earliest recollection, the coal business has been in a state of unrest. It has always been a matter of bewilderment to the serious thinking, the instability of this most important industry; second only to agriculture in its effect on the great development of this country, and even more important in certain aspects, because without fuel railroads could not run, agriculture could not get its products to market, nor would the great manufacturing enterprises have been possible. I will not attempt to discuss the present serious -labor dispute or similar disagreements of the past; in the settlement of which more or less successful attempts have been made to equalize, temporarily at least, natural conditions through "joint agreement" as to prices paid labor; but will confine my views to the general underlying conditions of which the disputes are symptoms, and try to show how these must be remedied before there can be any hope of stabilizing conditions.

THERE is no question as to the importance of the part played by the retort in modern zinc smelting. A satisfactory retort should have properties that will result in resistance to slagging action and fire cracks, and have no tendency, or at least, only a small tendency, to soften and bend under furnace heat. The life and cost of a retort also are extremely important factors. The trend in zinc smelting during the past few years has been toward longer retorts and higher charge density. This is caused by the fact that the diameter is limited to 9 or 10 in. because of heat penetration difficulties in larger sizes. Consequently, increasing the length of the retort and density of charge offers the only practical means of increasing the amount of zinc produced per retort. The stiffness of a retort perhaps is the most important factor, as slag accumulates in the bottom of a retort which has sagged and very quickly cuts through, often ruining the retorts below. The development of the high-silica retort is a result of the demands made by the trend toward heavy charges.
