Potential differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electrochemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are modified in measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles. Introduction The existence of potential differences in the surface of the earth has been known for some time, and their measurement has facilitated the discovery of geological discontinuities such as ore bodies. The technique of measurement has been well established.'-a In measurements in oil wells, it has been found that the potential of shales with respect to some arbitrary reference is very nearly constant in any one well, at least below the zone to which meteoric water has gained access. Sandstones and some other types of sedimentary rocks have a difference of potential with respect to shale that is negative and may attain a value of 200 millivolts or more. The difference of potential, as usually measured commercially with water in the hole, is distributed over about one foot vertically at the top and bottom contacts of the sandstones. The sharpness of the curve at the formation contacts can be improved by using a short electrode that is close to the wall of the hole. These potentials generally have been ascribed to the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. Potentials have been found, however, in wells in which no water was present. In the course of experiments in electrical logging in Pennsylvania, carried out by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, observations were made of several phenomena that hitherto have not been described, to the author's knowledge, in the published literature. The potential differences across the contacts of sandstone and shale are called in this paper "natural potentials," as distinguished from the potentials caused by electroendosmosis (electrofiltration) and concentration differences, which will be discussed subsequently. Potentials in Cored Well In the spring of 1942, the author measured the potentials in an exploratory well (Day 13, near Grand Valley, Pa.) which had been cored with diamond tools. DURING the latter part of the year 1931, the Republic mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, at Republic, about 4 miles south of Browns-ville, Pa., was mining coal along four rib or fracture lines. One of these lines, the west butt rib line, was retreating towards a concrete-lined air shaft, 320 ft. deep, which had been sunk in 1911 for ventilation purposes. With the normal rate of mining at that time, it was expected that this rib line would pass the shaft in three or four months and the shaft would then be abandoned and allowed to cave. Realizing the opportunity presented for the study of an unusual case of ground movement, the question of conducting the study was presented by the junior author to the chairman of the Institute's committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence, Mr. George S. Rice, who presented the matter to Mr. G. H. Morse, General Manager of the Northern Mines, Republic Steel Corpora-tion, and he agreed to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in making the study, the results of which are presented in this paper. THE proper material of construction for a given purpose is that material which meets the requirements satisfactorily at the lowest ultimate cost. It is consistent with this principle that most aluminum castings are made of an alloy containing about 8 per cent. copper. This alloy possesses mechanical properties satisfactory for general engineering purposes together with manufacturing characteristics leading to the production of finished castings at low cost. It is to the aluminum industry what gray iron is to the iron and steel industry. Just as some services require "semi-steel," malleable castings or steel castings instead of gray iron, there is a certain and growing demand for aluminum castings of superior strength or ductility, or both. Since the beginning of the industry producers and others have sought to develop alloys or processes by which such castings could be made. Out of these efforts have emerged many alloy compositions and special processes, of which only a few have had sufficient merit to survive. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those which seem to the authors to offer the greatest promise for the production on a commercial scale of aluminum castings of superior mechanical properties, with special reference to heat-treated castings. The suitability of an alloy or process for actual manufacture is affected by so many factors that the problem of appraisal is not a simple one. Since this is such an important part of the whole subject it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the requirements. The final verdict is of course the result of commercial trial and experience. It will therefore, perhaps, be profitable to employ a somewhat historical method of treatment in discussing the subject of alloy development.

The precipitation of the nitride Fe4N from the solid solution of nitrogen in a Fe and of the phosphide Fe3P from the solid solution of phosphorus in a Fe both lead to the formation of structures that may be easily identified as Widmanstatten figures, within the meaning of the term as used in this series of papers. A complete solution has been obtained for the figure formed by Fe4N. The structure of Fe3P, however, is not fully known and a complete solution of this figure thus cannot be obtained; nevertheless, a study of this figure has furnished some new information. Precipitation of Fe4N from Alpha Solid Solution of N in Alpha Fe Constitution of System Iron-nitrogen A knowledge of the constitution of the whole of the Fe-N system is unnecessary for this work, though the recent studies by Eisenhut and Kauppl and by Lehrerz have clarified most of the moot points; it is sufficient for our purpose to state that a Fe of high purity dissolves 0.42 per cent of nitrogen in solid solution at the eutectoid temperature, 591' C., and that this solubility decreases at first rapidly and then more slowly until at room temperature the solid solubility amounts to approximately 0.1 per cent nitrogen.3

The deposits described occur in a belt starting 1 ½ miles east of Juncos and extending 6 miles in a southeasterly direction. They are of the contact metamorphic type, being associated with a limestone and calcareous tuff that is interbedded with andesite tuffs and andesites which have been invaded by a quartz diorite intrusion. Of the fire occurrences examined, the largest can be traced for a horizontal distance of 2000 ft. No mining has, been done, but some of the outcrops lead to the belief that deposits of commercial size are present. IN CONNECTION with the gathering of data for a report on the geology of the Humacao district of southeastern Porto Rico during the summer of 1916, under the auspices of the Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands, conducted by the New York Academy of Sciences, the writer had an opportunity to make a brief examination of the magnetite deposits of the eastern portion of the island. Inasmuch as these deposits have attracted some attention as possible future sources of iron ore, and as there is only scanty reference made to them in literature,1 a short description based on this reconnaissance survey was deemed to be worthy of record. The magnetite deposits of eastern Porto Rico occur in association with a belt of limestone, trending approximately S 53° E, which begins 1 ½ miles east of Juncos and can be traced for about 6 miles toward the coast. PRINCIPLES OF TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION IN MAGNETIC INSTRUMENTS The principle underlying the majority of magnetic intensity variom-eters is a comparison of the force to be measured with another force of known magnitude. The known force may be (a) of a magnetic nature, such as magnetic fields produced by magnets or coils, or (b) of a mechan-ical nature, such as (1) the elastic forces of wires, or (2) the force of gravity, such as employed in bifilar magnetometers and magnetic balances. In instruments of such type, usually a magnetic system is employed, free to move about either a horizontal or vertical axis, on some sort of a suspension. If the earth's magnetic field alone were present, such a system would adjust itself into the direction of the field or that of its components. Owing to the simultaneous action of the comparison force, however, the magnetic needle assumes a position that differs from the direction of the magnetic force; for all such instruments, the angle of deflection a is given by tan a = F/X, where F is the known and X the unknown earth magnetic force component. In other words, the magnetic system merely serves as an "indicator" for the position of balance of the two forces. Considering the matter from this point of view, it is not immediately obvious why the temperature of such a magnetic system should modify the results. In magnetic instruments, we may distinguish two different effects of temperature: (1) a magnetic effect and (2) a mechanical effect. The first is due to the fact that the magnetic moment of a magnet drops with an increase in temperature. This drop is characterized by the temperature coefficient of the magnetic moment µ (see equation 1). The second effect is due to the change in the .torsion of suspension wires with temperature or to the expansion of lever arms of masses acting on magnetic balances.

DATA pertaining to pipe line flow for both oil and gas in horizontal or nearly horizontal pipe lines are both extensive and accurate. However, the pipe formulas used to determine pressure drop for flowing fluids (liquids and gases) under conditions of horizontal flow are not generally applicable to flowing oil and/or gas wells. Except for some data developed in small laboratory set-ups, little or no information was available concerning flow of oil and gas mixtures in vertical pipes, when, in 1928, the writer began the development of a method for computing pressure drops in the pipes of flowing oil wells, as outlined in this paper. In 1929, Uren1 presented some findings based on laboratory experi-ments in which vertical flow of an extremely heavy crude oil was induced, by means of air through a 2-in. pipe, 41 ft. long. The friction factors derived from the experiment, as well as values for pressure drop per 100 ft., are not believed satisfactory in their application to flow problems in the field. Versluys,2 also in 1929, presented a mathematical development of the theory of flowing oil wells, and in 1930, gave a companion paper3 setting forth some principles governing the choice of length and diameter of tubing in oil wells. Since the termination of the study presented in this paper, another. valuable contribution pertaining to the problem, of vertical flow was made by Moore and Wilde.4 Although there were writings dealing with the principles of the gas-lift, a search of the available literature indicated that specific information on vertical flow was lacking with the exception of the writings of Uren, Versluys, and Moore and Wilde, to which reference .has been made.

CREEP investigators have made extensive studies to determine the interrelation of stress, temperature and the tensile creep rates of metals. It has been suggested that at small stresses the secondary or constant creep rates obey a simple viscous law. Building upon this suggestion, departure from pure viscosity as stress increases may be expressed mathematically as a consequence of reversibly altered viscosity or "flowability" in the same sense that temperature change reversibly alters viscosity. From the index to alteration of viscosity, a value for the energy of secondary creep may be derived having the magnitude of the free energy of vaporized metal. The suggestion is made that applica-tion of stress alters the energy of secondary creep. Strain energy is argued to be but a minor factor in the energetics of secondary creep. A deformation mechanism involving the large energy associated with secondary creep implies a sort of solid self-diffusion process. Evidence indicates that creep strain above the recrystallization temperature takes place by crystallographically directed self-diffusion at grain boundaries and points of crystal defects. A self-diffusion theory of secondary creep is proposed, embracing the principles of the Dushman-Langmuir theory of solid diffusion. An equation is suggested whereby the rate of tensile creep may be related directly to the physical and struc-tural character of the solid metal.

An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 and to conceptualizing geologic model s. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

AT Butte, successive zones of sericitized and argillized quartz monzonite occur around every ore-bearing fracture regardless of its size, attitude, or relative age. The two types of alteration always occupy the same relative positions; sericite adjacent to the ore-bearing vein, clay minerals always between the sericitized rock and fresh quartz monzonite, except where overlap of alteration effects between adjacent fissures has eliminated the lower grade mineralogical products, as is the case in much of Butte's Central zone of pervasive sericitization. As long as active circulation continued in the channel, each zone migrated away from the fissure, that is, it grew at its outer edge and simultaneously receded at its veinward edge because of encroachment by the next innermost zone. The different mineralogical and chemical responses within the wall rocks to the attack by the ore fluid are dependent not on a drastic about-face change of composition of the fluid in the channel relative to its ability to alter the quartz monzonite but on continuously varying conditions of physico-chemical environment within the wall rock outwardly from the vein.

The Union Carbide Nuclear Co., in treating low-grade tungsten and molybdenum-copper ores at the Pine Creek mill near Bishop, Calif., employs flotation for the initial extraction of the valuable mineral constituents. These minerals consist of scheelite, molybdenite, and several of the copper sulfides including chalcopyrite, bornite, and possibly chalcocite. They occur in a gangue consisting mainly of quartz, pyroxene, and garnet, with minor amounts of calcite and fluorite. This assemblage of minerals presents an unusual grinding problem because of their diverse physical characteristics. Feed for the circuit is prepared from -6-in. ore by screening on a rod deck screen to remove the -5/8 - in. material. The+5/8-in. fraction is crushed in open circuit with a 5 1/2-ft Symons shorthead crusher operated at a closed- side setting of approximately 3/8 in. The screen undersize and the conecrusher discharge are then combined to constitute the feed to the grinding circuit. The ore is ground in 6 by 5-ft grate discharge ball mills operated in closed circuit with 54-in. spiral classifiers. The classifier overflow goes directly to the flotation section of the plant. Studies of the flotation circuits have shown that the maximum recovery of the tungsten, molybdenum, and copper minerals occurs in the particle-sue range from 100 mesh to approximately 400 mesh. Further, practice has shown that the ore minerals are effectively reduced to this size range if the total ore is ground to -48 mesh. The general objective of the grinding circuit then is to reduce the feed to -48 mesh with the production of a minimum amount of slimes. The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain how well the grinding circuit was carrying out this objective. The method used was to sample the various products in the grinding section, size these products accurately, and analyze the resulting sue distributions. SAMPLE PREPARATION AND SIZING TECHNIQUES Representative samples of the different grinding circuit products, namely, new feed to the ball mill, ball mill discharge, classifier overflow, and classifier return, were taken over a 24-hr period. The samples were then dried without being filtered to avoid loss of slimes. The percentages of solids in the different products were the following: new ball-mill feed, 95%; ball mill discharge, 82%; classifier overflow, 52%; and classifier return, 84% solids. SOME of the most important hydrometallurgical developments in recent years relate to processes involving the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aque- ous suspension at elevated temperatures by air or oxygen under pressure. Among these is the acid pressure-leach process which has been developed, particularly for the treatment of pyritic uranium ores.1-5 In this process, an aqueous suspension of the ore is digested in an autoclave, in which an overpressure of air or oxygen is maintained, at temperatures above 100°C. PrioR to 1902, the tramming of ore from the stopes to the shafts, in the Butte mines, was done by man or animal power, but the demand for greater tonnage and the need for more improved methods of tramming the ore resulted in the installation of the compressed-air locomotive in a few mines. Some of the objections to animal haulage were thus eliminated, but this locomotive was not generally adopted, because of a number of limiting features. It was superseded by the electric trolley locomotive. The early types of trolley locomotives were not satisfactory from the operators' viewpoint, but they had many economic advantages and after a number of years, in which improvements were constantly made in the structural details, they became dependable, so that the use of animals for main haulage in the mines has now been practically abandoned. There are now operating in the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., 185 trolley-type locomotives, each of which has replaced five animals. It cost approximately $50 per month to keep an animal, hence the economies that resulted fully justified the expenditure of electrifying the haulage systems. The haulage conditions in this company's mines possess many advantageous features that arc not always found in underground mine workings. The drifts and crosscuts are large, approximately 5 ft. (1.5 m.) wide by 71/2 ft. (2.3 m.) high, and have curves of no less than 18 ft. (5.5 m.) radius; and the roadbeds of the drifts and crosscuts have a uniform grade of 0.5 per cent. toward the shaft, or in favor of the loaded trips. In all of the mines, except two, the track gage is 18 in. (45.7 cm.): and all tracks in the main haulageways are laid with 25-lb. (11.3 kg.) rails. The stations at the shaft are large, well-lighted, clean, and cool. The average temperature of the stations, however, is about 75" F. (24" C.), while the average temperature in some of the drifts and crosscuts is 92" I?. (33.5" C.). As the orebodies lie at varying distances from the hoisting shafts,

PROGRESS in a technical art is of several kinds. It springs .from many diverse sources. It comprises invention, mechanical improvement, operating advance, analytical study, education. Invention is, by definition, a relatively great, essentially individual step, taken quickly. Operating advance is the slow, cumulated march of practice; in contrast, it moves at the pace of the tortoise, but over, the years its effects rival and, in some cases, surpass those of invention. Mechanical improvement- is a usual concomitant of the reduction of invention. to operating practice; thereafter it is a primary tool of operating advance. Analytical study is the process of mental digestion of the fruits of invention and practice. Its purpose is to render these into a form assimilable by the art as a whole, and by the perennial crop of would be practitioners. Education, disseminating the results of such study, consolidates and maintains the positions gained. Thus, slowly at first, but continuously accelerating, the tide of progress grows- to flood. Such growth, in mathematical parlance, is expressible in the general form y = mxn, where x is time, n is some positive number greater than one, m is another positive number, and y is the state of the action at instant x. Single aluminum crystals were subjected to creep in simple shear on the (111) planes in the slip direction. The activation energies for creep were calculated from the effect of small abrupt changes in temperature on the creep rate just before and immediately following the temperature change. The results definitely establish the fact that creep of single aluminum crystals occurs by-three unique processes, characterized by thethree distinct and isolatable activation energies: The 35,-500-cal-per-mole activation energy obtained at the highest temperatures was ascribed to a dislocativationtion climb process; the 28,000-cal-per-mole activation-energy process, occurring over the intermediate-temperature range was attributed to a cross-slip mechanism; and it was suggested thot the 3400-cal-per-mole process observed below 400°K may be the Peierls energy. THE most pertinent question regarding the phenomenon of creep in crystalline materials is concerned with the identity of the crystallographic mechanisms of deformation that control the creep rate. For many years slight progress was made in uncovering the basic mechanisms for creep. Over the past 10 years, however, two parallel lines of investigations have contributed to a more definitive understanding of the processes involved in creep. THE copper mines of the Katanga region in the Belgian Congo lie along the same mineralized belt as those of Northern Rhodesia. There are two distinct types of deposits in that belt, the dolomitic and the quartzitic. In the dolomitic type the metallic minerals are found in a dolomitic limestone country rock. Through oxidation and enrichment,, large deposits of high-grade oxidized copper ores were formed, some of which are being worked by the Union Miniére du Haut Katanga. Such deposits are all in Katanga. The quartzitic deposits are found in Katanga and Northern Rhodesia. Here the primary mineralization occurred in sandstones and quartzites, in horizons stratigraphically lower than the dolomites. These rocks are not favorable to secondary enrichment and the oxidized zone is poorer than the sulphide zone, which alone contains the ore. There are also in Katanga a few ore-bearing veins. One of them is being worked in the Prince Leopold mine at Kipushi. PRINCE LEOPOLD MINE The Kipushi ore body fills a fault vein and invades the wall rocks more or less extensively by metasomatic replacement. The vein strikes north-northeast and south-southwest and dips to the west. The variable dip averages 60ºto a depth of 300 ft., and more uniformly 80º below 400 ft. In the upper section the average width is 200 ft. and below the width is about 150 ft. The length of the ore body is 2300 feet. OF the four papers that comprise this Technical Publication, three are case histories of individual geophysical prospects, subsequently tested by drilling. The bibliography of Dr. Barton's published scientific paperst includes investigations in physiography and surface geological mapping, as well as his geophysical papers, and from this list it is to be observed that he early recognized the place of different types of geophysical prospecting methods in the search for geological structures of economic importance. Moreover, his viewpoint was not merely that the structures should be found, but that the geophysical data should be examined quantitatively to determine the geometry of the structures. In other words, that although these data are insufficient to deduce a unique form for the structure that caused the effects measured in the data, the engineering computations should be carried out to give as much of a definite configuration to the structure as the data permitted, in order that the testing of the structures could be conducted in the most economical manner and with the idea that the experience so gained could be later incorporated in the study of structures subsequently found. Dr. Barton continually emphasized the quantitative use of geophysical observations, whereas at the time that he began his specialization in geophysics it was considered sufficient to use observations only qualitatively. He, more than any one else, was responsible for the first volume on geophysical prospecting issued by the Institute in 1929, and his three articles in that volume stressed the quantitative use of geophysical prospecting. The fourth article in this present Technical Publication is a further contribution to this branch of geophysical interpretation, and is a supplement to the paper in the 1929 volume, "Calculations in the Interpretation of Observations with the Eötvös Torsion Balance."
