The effects of methods of crystal growing, wafer sawing, polishing, routine handling, diffusion, and epitaxial growth on the defects in GaAs are reviewed and studied using reflection and transmission X-ray topographic techniques. In general, it was found that boat-grown crystals exhibited fewer defects than Czochralski crystals, although all crystals showed large numbers of precipitates visible when examined in the electron microscope. Mechanical surface treatments such as sawing and mechanical polishing introduce damage to a depth of about 5 µ, most of which can be removed by suitable chemical or chem-mechanical polishing. In addition, defects can be introduced through routine handling of wafers, for example with metallic tweezers. These defects can be quite severe, and have been observed 20 µ below the wafer surface. Defects can also be introduced through diffusion and epitaxial growth. These defects, which include precipitates, growth pyramids, stacking faults, dislocations, and so forth, can be detrimental to device fabrication. It is shown that wafers or films which appear defect-free optically can contain defects visible in the X-ray topographs. WHILE the use of GaAs in the semiconductor industry has increased very rapidly in the last few years, due mainly to the recent development of many important GaAs devices,1,2 the major limit to the production of commercial quantities of many GaAs devices remains a severe lack of suitable materials technology. This lack is apparent in two critical areas. First, production quantities of high-quality GaAs crystals, reproducibly doped and precipitate-free, simply are not available commercially, although some reasonable quality material is available on a limited first-come, first-serve basis. Second, in comparison to silicon technology, little is known about the effects of processing variables on the defects either present in as-grown GaAs or introduced through processing and handling of wafers. These areas are now receiving some attention from semiconductor device manufacturers, who are studying defects in GaAs in order to better understand how either to prevent their occurrence or to cope with their existence. Most investigations of the defects in GaAs have been made by optical microscopy3-5 or transmission electron microscopy techniques.'-' Recently, however, the imaging techniques of X-ray topography, electron mi-croprobe analysis, and scanning electron microscopy are being applied to the study of GaAs.9-14 In the case of X-ray topography, a one-to-one image is obtained that must be photographically enlarged. In compensa- tion, the defects within entire wafers may be imaged by simple scanning (Lang technique15) if the wafer is reasonably perfect, or by using the scan oscillation technique developed by Schwuttke16 if the wafer is warped or distorted. The purpose of this paper is to both review and extend the general application of X-ray topographic techniques to GaAs. Emphasis will be placed on the effects of growth and process variables on the quality and perfection of both bulk and epitaxial GaAs. Reference to optical or electron microscopy results will be made when useful. Since the effects on defects of a wide variety of processing variables such as crystal growing, sawing, polishing, diffusion, and epitaxial growth will be somewhat superficially reviewed, a fairly extensive bibliography of the most important recent results in these areas is included. However, for completeness, important defects will be illustrated here, although such defects have been previously shown by others. While this paper is concerned with defects rather than with the physics of X-ray scattering, the mechanisms of contrast formation in the topographs will of necessity be briefly mentioned. EXPERIMENTAL GaAs crystals, both boat-grown18 and Czochralski-grown,'8 containing a variety of dopants of various concentrations, were purchased from outside vendors. Wafers were sliced from the crystals using a Hamco ID saw and were mechanically polished using 1 µ diamond paste. Chem-mechanical polishing was done in bromine-methanol as described by Sullivan and Kolb.18 Chemical polishing was done using a modified sulfuric-peroxide solution, 11 parts H2SO4, 1 part 30 pct H2O2, 1 part DI water.5 Zinc diffusion was carried out in a closed tube, using a 10 pct Zn-In source at 825°C for 1 hr. Oxide masking techniques were used to select the area to be diffused. Epitaxial wafers were either purchased or prepared here. All epitaxial runs prepared here were carried out using a Ga-GaAs-AsC13 source in a closed tube at a substrate temperature of 750°C. Wafers were chem-mechanically polished and gas-etched prior to deposition. The X-ray topographs were taken on a Krystallos Lang camera, operating in the transmission scanning geometry (Lang technique15) or in the reflection scanning geometry (modified Berg-Barrett technique20,21). MoKa, radiation was used for all transmission topographs using a Jarrell-Ash 100-µ spot focus. CuKal radiation was used for all reflection topographs using a General Electric CA-7 1-mm spot focus X- ray tube. Topographs were printed from an intermediate contrast inversion film, so the contrast shown in all figures here is the same as that of the original 50-µ-thick emulsion L4 Iiford nuclear plate used to record the topograph.

The effect of neutron irradiation on tensile properties of the Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb-0.5 wt pet Cu alloy has been evaluated for integrated neutron fluxes up to 3 x 1020 n per sq cm (E > 1 Mev). Specimen temperature during irradiation was normally 300°C. The material was studied both in annealed and in quenched and aged conditions. When the alloy (fab-ricatedfrom sponge zirconium) is quenched from a temperature =40°C below the a + ß/ß transformation and aged 6 hr at 535oC, neutron irradiation up to the maximum studied has little effect 071 reduction in area, although there is a drop in uniform elongation and the yield strength is increased by = 25 pct. Conversely, irradiation of the alloy in an annealed condition can result in much greater changes in properties, with yield-strength increases of up to 200 pet. The dose dependence of irradiation hardening obeys the saturation equntion proposed by Makin and Minter to explain hardening in copper and nickel: Act = C[1 - exp(-Døt)/1/2 A rnodel is proposed to explain the effect of niobium content and metallurgical condition on irradiatiotz behavior. THE Zr-Nb alloys form a class of material susceptible to marked strengthening by quench and age heat treatment. With niobium concentrations as low as 2.5 wt pet, strengths can be developed which are double those of annealed zircaloy-2.1 Since the neutron-capture cross section of the Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb alloy is nearly identical to that of Zircaloy-2, significant gains in power-reactor neutron economy could be obtained by replacing stressed in-reactor components of Zircaloy-2 with the heat-treated Zr-Nb alloy. When the solution heat-treatment temperature is in the high (a + ß) phase, then the tensile properties of the quenched (and aged at 500°C) material have been shown to be relatively insensitive to neutron irradiation.1-3 Addition of small quantities of copper to the binary Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb alloy gives a useful reduction to the corrosion rate in air and carbon di- oxide,&apos; and a ternary alloy of composition Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb-0.5 wt pet Cu was chosen for one component in the Douglas Point Reactor. This application utilizes both the corrosion resistance to a moist air-carbon dioxide environment and the strength developed by a quench and age heat treatment. By suitable choice of solution heat treatment and aging temperatures, tensile properties of the ternary alloy can be made nearly identical to those considered as optimum for the binary alloy. One effect of the copper addition, however, is to give marked changes in the aging kinetics of the alloy.&apos; For this reason, it appeared that neutron irradiation might promote overaging in the ternary alloy, particularly at the elevated service temperature (=300°C). This paper describes the effect of neutron irradiation on the tensile behavior of the Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb-0.5 wt pet Cu alloy in several metallurgical conditions pertinent to its use as a reactor material. The metallurgical conditions included those for which aging occurs in the unirradiated material, and fully annealed conditions for which a higher degree of thermal stability could be expected. 1) EXPERIMENTAL Two batches of alloy were used, both made from sponge zirconium. The fabricator&apos;s analysis of principle constituents showed no significant difference between the two batches, Table I. The rod material was rolled to 1.5 in. diam, and then swaged to final sizes of 0.5 to 0.375 in. diam at nominal temperatures of 785" and 625°C for the AM and AS batches, respectively. Subsequent hydrogen analyses at CRNL confirmed that the hydrogen concentration of the as-received rod was indeed <20 ppm. However, it was found that the (a + ß)/ß transus for the AM material was approximately 25°C lower than that of the AS material, indicating rather more difference in oxygen concentration than given in Table I. Several investigations in recent years have shown that drilling rates are increased significantly with increased hydraulic horsepower. But, there has been no over-all method of designing jet-bit programs that efficiently uses the surface power. A study of present practices indicates that frequently as little as 50 per cent of the possible effects at the bit are used. Some observers have indicated that the best utilization of hydraulic horsepower (maximum effect on drilling rate) occurs when the bit hydraulic horsepower is maximum; others have stated that jet impact force is more important, and others have believed that maximum jet velocity is required. Limited efforts to date have shown some optimum conditions for bit hydraulic horsepower and impact, but these conditions cannot exist during drilling of a large part of the hole and do not provide a basis for designing a complete jet-bit program. This paper shows the maximum obtainable bit horsepower, impact force and jet velocity at all depths, taking into account the limitations of the pump, piping, hole and minimum circulating rate for adequate cuttings removal. Ranges of operation are developed; and flow rates, surface pressure and bit pressures are specified for each range to provide a maximum of any one of the desired effects. It also is shown that, by proper selection of nozzle sizes and by following the rules presented, the maximum obtainable quantities can be effectively utilized from surface to total depth. Finally, a simple graphical method of selecting nozzle sizes and flow rates is presented which can be used with familiar bit-company hydraulic tables and calculators to design jet-bit programs for maximum bit hydraulic horsepower, impact or jet velocity, as desired. These programs make most effective use of the pumps. Heretofore, there was no method available for designing field tests which adequately separated the effects of bit horsepower, impact and jet velocity. The programs and procedures developed in the paper are dissimilar and, when used in future field testing, should demonstrate which program is the most important in obtaining the fastest drilling rate. INTRODUCTION During the past decade, rig hydraulics has come into increasing prominence. There has been a definite trend toward providing higher horsepower pumps, jet-type bits have had increased use, numerous investigators"" have reported increased drilling rates as a result of increased hydraulics, and bit manufacturers have provided tablesa-" and calculators that are now commonly used 10 design jet-bit programs. Opinion has varied as to the hydraulic quantity which has the great- est effect on drilling rate. Papers and data have been presented that show pump horsepower,&apos;9 it hydraulic horsepower and jet impact force,&apos; each to be the most significant factor affecting drilling rate. Examinatibn of jet-bit programs of the bit companies indicates emphasis on jet velocity. Only pump horsepower can be eliminated because it can be used to produce any one of the bit effects which, a priori, must be more relevant factors. This contradictory state of opinion and practice regarding the bit effects is unfortunate, but several published references have been concerned with making one or another of the factors maximum; and, because these in each case have given results applicable to only intervals of the hole drilled, there seems to be ample reason to complete the previous efforts. It also is believed that the differences in programs for each effect, where they exist, should be delineated so that future use may determine which hydraulic effect is the more relevant. It is the purpose of this paper to: (1) show the theoretical maximum bit hydraulic horsepower, jet impact force and jet velocity available at all depths, taking into consideration all necessary restrictions on operating conditions; (2) illustrate procedures by which the maximum available horsepower, impact force or veIocity may be obtained; and (3) present a graphical method for rapid selection of jet-nozzle sizes and flow rates to be used with conventional procedures to design jet-bit programs for maximum bit horsepower, impact force or velocity as desired.

A need for new supplies of fresh water exists today and in many specific areas that need is urgent. One solution lies in saline water conversion, a problem complicated by cost factors. The principles involved in saline water conversion, the status of development, and the estimated costs (present and future) of several processes are presented. Among the methods discussed are distillation, electrodialysis, and freezing. In general, the costs presented are based on a standardized procedure for estimating conversion costs, permitting a valid comparison among the various processes. The need for new supplies of fresh water and the potential benefits to be derived from an abundant supply of converted water are recognized by practically everyone concerned with water problems. The water supply problem exists today; it is urgent in many specific areas in this country and also in the world, and it will become more acute in the future. One answer to the growing problem of adequate water supplies is the development of new sources. Very significant quantities of brackish underground and surface waters exist in certain areas and an inexhaustible supply of ocean water is available. Thus in many areas water resources can be extended through saline water conversion. Congress recognized the need for new sources of fresh water in 1952 and passed the Saline Water Act, Public Law 448, amended it in 1955, and in September 1958, enacted Public Law 85-883, calling for the construction of at least five demonstration plants. The program is administered by the Dept. of Interior through the Office of Saline Water, and its primary objective is to reduce the cost of converted water produced, whether it be by development of new processes or improvement of known processes. This is a most difficult problem and one that will require several years of prodigious effort. It is difficult—not because of any intricate or new chemistry, engineering, or physics involved—but because of the difficulty in converting water at low cost. Whatever the sources of the saline water, the salts which are held tenaciously in solution must be removed before the water becomes suitable for industrial or domestic uses. Saline water is a relatively simple system of salts dissolved in water. It has certain chemical and physical properties that determine the various methods by which the salts may be separated from the water. The system, although not complex, in most instances, has had countless years in which to reach equilibrium and is, therefore, comparatively stable. Because of its stability, separation of saline solutions requires relatively large quantities of energy. The unique properties of water depend on the fact that its molecules are chemically active. The chemical and physical properties of water are associated with the type of bonding involved in the water molecule. Chemical changes such as hydrolysis, or rusting of iron, involve the breaking of chemical bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Physical changes, such as evaporation in a boiler, the melting of ice, or the viscous resistance to flow in a pipe, involve breaking of the hydrogen bonds. (The hydrogen nucleus is so small that it can attract two negative atoms.) Thus water molecules not only combine with molecules of other compounds but even with one another; e.g., each molecule may be bounded to four other molecules. Water molecules cling to the ions of dissolved salt to form water-encumbered hydrated ions and they cling to one another to form entangling networks through which hydrated ions can be propelled only by tearing the networks apart. That is one reason why considerable energy still needs to be expended in our simplest procedures for purifying water. If water molecules did not have this habit of clinging so tenaciously to other molecules, and to one another, it would be easy to push salt ions past the water molecule and get a separation. But the water would not then dissolve salt, so the problem would not exist.&apos; Water when heated evaporates very slowly, relative to other liquids having simple molecules. Vaporization involves the separation of molecules from the liquid, and this means overcoming the attraction between molecules which is due to the hydrogen bonding. The heat of vaporization for water is high; consequently, the boiling point of water is also high. Water boils at 100" C; hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at -60" C; oxygen (02) at -183" C; nitrogen (N2) at -196" C; and methane (CH4) at-161°C, even though the latter has about the same molecular weight as water. Because of these peculiar properties of water, it exists as a liquid on earth instead of a gas such as hydrogen sulfide or nitrogen and oxygen.

The wellbore acts as a storage tank during drawdown and build-up testing and causes the sand-face flow rate to approach the constant surface flow rate as a function of time. This effect is compounded if non-Darcy flow (turbulent flow) exists near a gas wellbore. Non-Darcy flow can be interpreted as a flow-rate dependent skin effect. A method for determining the non-Darcy flow constant using this concept and the usual skin effect equation is described. Field tests of this method have identified several cases where non-Darcy flow was severe enough that gas wells in a fractured region appeared to be moderately damaged. The combination of wellbore storage and non-Darcy flow can result in erroneous estimates of formation flow capacity for short-time gas well tests. Fortunately, the presence of the wellbore storage eflect permits a new analysis which can provide a reasonable estimate of formation flow capacity and the non-Darcy flow constant from a single short-time test. The basis of the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey correction for wellbore storage in pressure build-up was investigated. Results led to extension of the method to drawdown testing. If non-Darcy flow is not important, the method can be used to correct short-time gas well drawdown or build-up data. A method for estimation of the duration of wellbore storage effects was developed. INTRODUCTION In 1953, van Everdingen and Hurst generalized results published in their previous paper3 concerning wellbore storage effects to include a "skin effect", or a region of altered permeability adjacent to the wellbore. Later, Gladfelter. Tracy and Wilsey4 presented a method for correcting observed oilwell pressure build-up data for wellbore storage in the presence of a skin effect. The method depended upon measuring the change in the fluid storage in the wellbore by measuring the rise in liquid level. To the author&apos;s knowledge, application of the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey storage correction to gas-well build-up has not been discussed in the literature. It is, however, a rather obvious application. Gas storage in the wellbore is a conlpressibility effect and can be estimated easily from the measured wellbore pressure as a function of time. Several approaches to the wellbore storage problem have been suggested. As summarized by Matthews, it is possible to minimize annulus storage volume by using a packer, and to obtain a near sand-face shut-in by use of down-hole tubing plug devices. Matthews and Perrine have suggested criteiia for determining the time when storage effects become negligible. In 1962, Swift and Kiel&apos; presented a method for determination of the effect of non-Darcy flow (often called turbulent flow) upon gas-well behavior. This paper provided a theoretical basis for peculiar gas-well behavior described previously by Smith. Recently, Carter, Miller and Riley observed disagreement among flow capacity k,,h data determined from gas-well drawdown tests conducted at different flow rates for short periods of time (less than six hours flowing time). In the original preprint of their paper, Carter et al. proposed that the discrepancy in flow capacity was possibly a result of wellbore storage effects. Results of an analytical study of unloading of the wellbore and non-Darcy flow were recorded by carter.14 In the final text of their paper, Carter et al.!&apos; stated that they no longer believed wellbore storage was the reason for discrepancy in their kgh estimates. In view of the preceding, this study was performed to establish the importance of non-Darcy flow and well-bore storage for gas-well testing. In the course of the study. a reinspection of the previous work by van Everdingen&apos; and Hurst&apos; was made, and the basis for the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey&apos; wellbore storage correction was investigated and extended to flow testing. WELLBORE STORAGE THEORY As has been shown by Aronofsky and Jenkins,11-12 Matthews," and others, flow of gas can often be approximated by an equivalent liquid flow system. The following developnlent will use liquid flow nomenclature to simplify the presentation. Application to gas-well cases will be illustrated later. First, we will use the van Everdingen-HursP treatment of wellbore storage in transient flow to establish (1) the duration of wellbore storage effects, and (2) a method to correct flow data for wellbore storage. DURATION OF WELLHORE STORAGE EFFECTS When an oil well is opened to flow. the bottom-hole pressure drops and causes a resulting drop in the liquid level in the annulus. If V. represents the annular volume in cu ft/ft of depth, and p represents the average density of the fluid in the wellbore, the volume of fluid at reservoir conditions produced from the annulus per unit bottom-hole pressure drop is approximately: res bbl-- (V, cu ft/ft) (144 sqin./sq ft) psi -(5.615 cu ft/bbl)(pIb/cuft) ........(I)

Preferred orientations in rolled and annealed titanium sheets were determined by the Geiger counter spectrometer X-ray diffraction technique. Five annealing textures dependent upon the temperature range of annealing were found, and in order of increasing annealing temperature pendent upon the temperature range are: 1—a deformation like texture, 2—a rotated inorder a-recrystallization temperature texture, 3-a retained u-recrysraIlization texture, on annealing at lower temperatures of the ß-region, 4—a transformation texture based on recrystallized a and predicted by the Burgers&apos; relationship, and 5—a ,ß-cube texture. These results are examined in terms of current theories of recrystallization textures. UMEROUS investigators have described the tex- ture obtained by cold rolling the hexagonal metals, titanium, zirconium, and beryllium, which have c/a ratios less than that of ideal packing, 1.633. The basal planes are rotated out of the rolling plane, about the rolling direction, so that the basal poles are tilted toward the transverse direction as shown schematically in Fig. la. In all instances but one,&apos; it was also reported that the [1010] direction was parallel to the rolling direction (see Fig. lb). Hot rolling has been reported as causing a similar tilt of the basal poles in the transverse direction (see Fig. la) and causing the [1010] direction also to be parallel to the rolling direction as shown schematically in Fig. lb. Annealing after deformation does not appreciably change the tilt of the basal poles in the transverse direction." Beryllium2-7 continues to have the [1010] direction in the rolling direction after annealing, and similar observations for titanium and zirconium&apos; . have been reported for annealing at fairly low temperatures, again as in Fig. lb. At higher annealing temperatures, however, the recrystallized grains of titanium" and zirconium have an orientation such that the [1120] direction is approximately in the rolling direction, although the basal poles are still inclined in the transverse direction. Figs. la and lc show the resulting orientations schematically. This change in orientation has been described as a nominally ±30° rotation of the hexagonal crystallites about the basal poles of the cold rolled texture and is apparent from the results which are summarized in Table I for investigations with the X-ray diffraction technique employing film. The angles y, , and ß are indicated in Fig. 2 which represents the stereographic projection of (1070) poles for the mean orientation of a pole figure. Texture determinations for titanium using the Geiger counter spectrometer have provided similar results except that in some instances additional components of the texture were proposed, as shown by the summary of data in the upper half of Table 11. On the other hand, the spectrometer technique, when applied to zirconium,* has revealed a splitting Recently completed studies of the textures of annealed zirconium", show zirconium to possess textures very similar to those reported here for titanium. Therefore, much of this discussion will include zirconium by virtue of its close similarity to titanium in pref erred orientations. of the intense areas of the pole figure for samples annealed at 600°C. This splitting could be described by a 7" rotation of the tilt axis about the normal to the rolling plane. Such a splitting for the annealed texture relative to the cold rolled texture was not observed in other determinations for either zirconium or titanium using the less sensitive film X-ray methoe and makes the relationship between the two types of texture more complex than the simple rotation about the (0001) pole based on film work. The more precise investigations on zirconium permit the descriptions in the lower part of Table 11, which show that the texture depends quantitatively on the temperature of annealing. When zirconium is annealed at temperatures up to 400°C, the texture is similar to the cold rolled texture, while annealing in the range 500" to 900°C produces a texture which is only approximately described as [11%] in the rolling direction. More precisely described results for zirconium show that the two types of splitting ( 1—about an axis in the rolling plane through an angle given in the second column in Table II and 2—about the normal to the rolling plane through an angle given in the third column of Table 11) depend on annealing temperature. The [1120 is the rolling direction only when the annealing temperature is in the vicinity of 900°C

IN the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-min.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage. 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystallization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,1 Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work.

Cappelen Smith, at a dinner held in the Hotel Commodore, New York, on Nov.&apos; 10, 1920. Prof. Waldemar Lindgren, president of the society, in giving the medal, said: "By the advancement of the science of hydrometallurgy, by the construction of plants on a scale audacious in their conception, by the successful overcoming of all sorts of difficulties, you have placed your name among those who occupy the very front rank among the hydrometallurgists. In recognition of this distinguished contribution to the science of metallurgy, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America now awards you its gold medal."

THE name engineer makes a very strong appeal to one who appreciates the mechanism underlying the fabric of our civilization. Engineers are scouts of civilization. We send them ahead into the lone &apos;places-the wilderness, the jungles, the great watery expanses, to build the highways necessary for civilized man. The engineers must deal with Nature, with that mysterious dynamic thing we call "force," with materials. It is their function to direct the human activity necessary to coordinate these forces and material in order to make them serve the needs and aspirations of men. GRATIFYING progress continues towards the elimination of the hazards confronting health and safety in and about mines. Employers and employees are diligently co-operating. One of the outstanding movements towards this end is the National Safety Competition conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. William W. Discussion of the paper of Edmund D. North, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 37, January, 1910, pp. 21 to 25. A. SCOTT REID, London, Eng. (communication to the Secretary*) :-As a constructor of several glass mine-models, I have read with much interest the description of the model of the Montana-Tonopah mine-workings by Edmund D. North. As an interchange of ideas and experience is always an advantage, and in view of the fact that such models are coming more and more into vogue, perhaps the following remarks on this subject may prove of interest to mining engineers generally and to Mr. North particularly. In the model of the Waihi gold-mine, New Zealand, which I constructed, a dust-proof case is used. The top, bottom, front, and two ends are of glass; the back only is of wood, painted a dull white, against which the mine-workings show very distinctly. Each mine-level is represented by a horizontal sheet of glass, supported on metal runners fixed to the uprights at each end of the case, in a manner similar to that described by Mr. North. The corner uprights are strengthened by having a metal band screwed to the inside face of each, to which the metal runners or supports for the sheets of glass are screwed in turn. The reason for having this additional strength is that as the mine is developed in depth, and fresh levels are opened, the increasing weight of the glass sheets, added to the model, caused the unsupported wooden uprights to bend slightly, so that the glass sheets-did not fit in with the desired nicety, and co-ordination was, to a considerable extent, lost. Strengthening the uprights in this manner is not important in models of mines in which only a few levels have been opened, or when the sheets of glass are small, but in the Waihi model there are 15 sheets of glass to be supported, and more to be added as development proceeds, and the weight is considerable.

A NOTABLE feature of the practice of the American mining engineer is the fact that &apos;his field has been world wide, and the results of his work may be found in all countries. For this reason, the mining engineer is particularly interested in any legislation tending to restrict his freedom in this respect. In their zeal to improve the status of the professional engineer, those responsible for the enactment of the registration laws now in effect in various of the United States may have introduced a practice that will result very much to the detriment of the American mining engineer. He is preeminently interested in the maintenance of the professional "open door," and fame may be the reward of him who calls the first "International Conference for the Limitation of Restrictive Legislation." There is no reason why these United States should be the only country to regulate the practice of professional engineering and, in fact, the movement is spreading beyond its borders. Already, it is necessary for the mining engineer to be thoroughly conversant with the various state laws in order to insure his right to pursue his calling. It may soon be necessary for him to make sure of his status in foreign countries before undertaking work in them.

HIGH GRADE zinc stocks were reported short early in 1943, but not Prime Western. Maximum production of High Grade was expected to be reached before the middle of the year, and demands of new brass mills were to take all of the increase. In February three premiums (A, B, C) of 2 3/4c. per lb. of zinc in ore were announced to encourage production from high-cost mines, the number of premiums being in proportion to estimates of ore-production costs.

FOR many years the developers or owners of worthy mining ventures in need of financing have found it almost impossible to obtain such financing under the conditions existing in most other lines of business. High rates of interest and unfair participation in profits have robbed the developers of much of their holdings, and have resulted in over-capitalization and many other like evils. When the general financial condition of the country is bad, this difficulty increases to a point where many operations must cease and hen are thrown out of employment. In 1.934 this situation had developed to such a point that Congress attempted to aid the mining industry. It first authorized the RFC to make loans to recognized and established corporations, individuals, and partnerships engaged in the business of mining, milling, or smelting of ores in June, 1934, limiting such authority to loans adequately secured, the security to consist of mineral acreage. The requirements of the law were stringent and of the 252 requests for loans received up to June 1, 1935, 35 were authorized.

AT the seventeenth National Metal Congress, held at Chicago, Oct. 1-3, the Iron and Steel Division and Institute of Metals Division participated with the American Society for Metals, American Welding Society, and the Wire Association in one of the most successful meetings ever held. The total attendance at the technical sessions and the scope of and interest shown in the exhibits at the Exposition were greater than at any of the "Metal Weeks" since the depression began. The Iron and Steel Division held two all-day symposia and one general session. The latter, at the International Amphitheatre, Wednesday afternoon, was the only one poorly attended. This was attributable, at least partly, to the location of the meeting roan.

WITHIN the past thirty years the United States has been involved in two tragic, vicious, and costly world wars. To make the world safe for democracy was the reason given for our participation, but the confusion and misunderstanding that prevails all over the world today suggests that war is not the proper approach to the attainment of that utopia. These conflicts were conceived and prosecuted by nations far advanced in civilization and culture. Their best manhood was sacrificed, a staggering tax burden was saddled on their peoples, huge financial losses were incurred, destruction of property was appalling, and cultural and peaceful scientific advancement received a setback that may require centuries to retrieve. Therefore, some basis is established for the conclusion that progress in the past fifty years has been most outstanding in the development of instruments used for death and destruction, and that progress in this direction between the two World Wars would indicate that the next war will go far toward total destruction of world civilization.

IF it had not been for the testimony of former Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes, before the Senatorial investigating committee the public would have heard little about the Federal Government&apos;s suit against California for the ownership of the tidelands. The Ickes-Pauley dispute brought to public attention that the California tideland oil deposits are the last remaining large Federal oil reserves. Ickes contends that these tideland oil deposits belong to the nation for the benefit of all the people of all the states and not solely to the State of California. Ickes also accused California oil man Ed Pauley of offering to give $330; 000 to the Democratic party fund if Ickes would drop the Federal Government&apos;s suit against the State of California for the ownership of said tidelands. The tidelands may be considered as the land bordering the coast line between mean high tide and outward under the ocean for a distance of a marine league, or about three statute miles. This strip of land along the coast of southern California contains large oil deposits which have a present and future prospective value of several billion dollars.
