The factors involved in selecting, a drive system for a grinding mill, including gearing arrangement, motor selection, and electric-supply system limitations are reviewed. Equipment costs are evaluated on a dollar per horsepower basis and starting performance is analyzed, the latter making use of a recently developed computer program. The present interest in large-diameter grinding mills and the rapidly rising cost of the drive in proportion to the cost of the mill establishes a need to explore the drive system in detail. The drive for a 7 to 8,000 hp mill will cost from $350 to $600,000 which represents nearly half the total cost of the mill package, and requires as much building space as the mill proper. Some of the drive components require a longer time to manufacture and the installation time and costs are equal to those for the mill. It is apparent that the drive has become a dominant factor in the overall mill design consideration. A new plant requires a tremendous investment in both time and money. With the high degree of competition in the mining industry, low capital cost is an exceedingly important factor in the development of a project. It is just as important, however, to insure that the equipment is going to perform satisfactorily for the anticipated life of the project without adding unplanned operating, maintenance, and replacement costs. This is the position in which the engineer or designer usually finds himself and is really one of his primary functionsestablishing a realistic compromise between cost and performance. Large primary grinding mills can represent a major portion of the cost of a plant and the drive system accounts for a substantial part of this cost. These facts justify a careful analysis of the drive requirements and all of the factors involved in ultimately arriving at the best system for the lowest cost. A number of excellent papers have been published on various aspects of mill drives. The authors have used information from these papers in making a study of a drive for a 7600-hp, 32 x 12-ft autogenous mill. This was a broad investigation, including mechanical and electrical design, layout, performance, and maintenance considerations, and overall economics leading to the selection of the optimum system for that mill. This paper was developed from the study and includes information applicable to large mills in general. For a successful and economical application, the drive must be considered as a system and all of the components analyzed to determine their effect on the system. This requires the participation of the mill designer, gear, and other mechanical component manufacturers, motor manufacturer, plant designer, and operator. A careful analysis of the mill torque requirements is first necessary to provide a basis for selection of the mechanical and electrical drive components. Because of manufacturing limitations on the size and capacity of gearing available for these low-speed applications, an evaluation of costs for various gear ratios and configurations in conjunction with motor speeds is required. Consultation with the power-supply company is necessary to determine limitations on motor-starting disturbances and to analyze operating costs on the basis of existing rate structures and low characteristics. Finally, consideration must be given to the drive arrangement and its affect on plant layout, space requirements, and location of auxiliary equipment for the selected process. There are presently three basic schemes for driving a mill. The first is a direct drive by a motor operating at mill speed with no gearing. The second is by a higher-speed motor through a trunnion-connected gear drive. The third is by a motor through the more conventional pinion and ring-gear with the option of an interposing gear box to permit greater motor speed than pinion shaft speed. [(Fig. 1.)] Several manufacturers have or are presently developing motors which drive the mill directly without the use of gears. One arrangement has the motor armature intimately surrounding the mill shell-discharge spout or extension of the trunnion journal. The motor stator is then supported independently and surrounds the shell or trunnion-mounted rotor. Another variation utilizes an independent mill-speed motor connected to the trunnion by a drive shaft and flexible couplings.

A methodfor accelerating the reduction of a metal oxide by carbon monoxide is to incorporate in the reduction system a nonreducible oxide which has a strong affinity for carbon dioxide and will remove it from the product gases. The effectiveness of this method was investigated by veduction experiments on specially prepared powder mixtures of SrO-ZnO ("active'.) and SrCO3-ZnO (reference). Measurements at 750o and 677°C showed that the rate of reduction of ZnO by CO was as much as an order of magnitude greater in the presence of SrO. Under the experimental conditions at least as much CO2 as generated by veduction was absorbed when SrO was present. Enlzancernent of the veduction rate by SvO resulted from modification of' gaseous djfitsion processes. THE specific question posed in this investigation was whether the reduction reaction CO + ZnO - Zn(g) + COa [1] could be accelerated by incorporating strontium oxide into the oxide charge undergoing reduction. Provided the strontium oxide was active enough, it could remove carbon dioxide from the product gases of ( 11 and form strontium carbonate, thus modifying Reaction [ 1] to CO + ZnO + SrO = Zn(g) + SrCO3 [ 2] This study of the comparative rates of Reactions [ I] and [2] can be considered as a particular case of a general scheme for increasing the rates of reduction of metal oxides by carbon monoxide. The limits of applicability of this scheme are indicated in the simple thermodynamic analysis presented in the appendix. This analysis primarily dictated the choice of the system, CO-ZnO-SrO, employed in this investigation. In addition, it was thought that a study of this scheme by use of the CO-ZnO-SrO reaction system would be of special interest in view of indications in the literature1-3 that the gaseous reduction of zinc oxide is prone to rate control by diffusion in the gas phase. The distinction should be pointed out between this and other efforts to increase the rates of reduction reactions through the use of addition agents. Additions of a wide range of chemicals have been tried with de- grees of apparent success varying from slightly negative to highly positive. The reasons for making additions have included the use of salts to produce effects akin to catalysis,4, 5 the alteration of the microstruc-tural details of the reduction process (including solid-state diffusion),6-8 and the conversion of an en-dothermic reaction into one that is exothermic or autogenous.9-12 The means used to attempt alteration of the enthalpy change has commonly been to incorporate lime into the charge, so that heat is generated by reaction with either of the reaction products, carbon dioxide or water. The use of lime in this way makes endeavors such as that of Edstrom and Wiberg similar to the present one. Furthermore, the basic principle behind the present work has previously been set forth.13 However, a detailed investigation of the type of reaction described in this work does not appear to have been conducted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE From both conceptual and physical standpoints, Reaction [2] is to be considered as the sum of two reactions:

Rates of migration of large-angle boundaries have been studied in zone-refined aluminum crystals, defonned 80 pct by rolling in the (110)[112] orientation at -78°C followed by a recovery anneal at 80°C. Artificially nucleated grains show a marked variation. by an order of magnitude, in their growth rates in different directions. The average activation energy for the migration of all boundaries was found to be about 16,000 cal per mole. The anisotropy of the boundary migration is rationalized on the basis of the boundary structure. It has been observed by Beck and HU,1 Kohara el al,2,3 and Czjzek and Haessner4 that recrystallized grains formed upon annealing Of deformed sing1e crystals of aluminum show anisotropic growth characteristics. Kohara et al. found that single crystals rolled in the (110)[112] orientation, when random nuclei were provided on one side of the crystal by rubbing with emery paper and annealing, developed a sharp recrys-tallization texture on the other side of the crystal upon further annealing. This sharp recrystallization texture consisted of four components, which were related to the deformation texture of the crystal, i.e. (110)[112], by rotations of ±40 deg around each of the two common [ 111] axes' They also noted that recrystallized grains were elongated in directions perpendicular to either of these two common [1111 axes. They attributed this anisotropic growth to the difference in the rate of self-diffusion or diffusion of impurity atoms along the tilt and the twist boundaries. A somewhat similar investigation was conducted by Czjzek and Haessner4 On strained single-crystal sheets Of alum- inum. These authors claimed that the matrix structure of the deformed crystal had a greater effect on the growth anisotropy of the recrystallized grains than did the boundary orientation itself. In the present investigation quantitative measurements of the rate of grain boundary migration in anisotropic growth have been made in zone-refined aluminum (99.9999+pct pure) crystals deformed 80 pct by rolling in the (110) 112] orientation. Crystals of this particular orientation were chosen because of the following desirable features: 1) the crystal does not change its orientation during rolling; 2) the rolling plane contains all the significant crystallographic directions; and 3) when annealed, following deformation, the crystal does not re-crystallize spontaneously but polygonizes to a stable and homogeneous structure. Hence, the initial orientation of the crystal and a constant strain energy in the matrix can be maintained during subsequent grain boundary migration studies. It is essential to keep the driving force constant for the study of boundary mobility.5 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A cylindrical single crystal of 1 in. diam was grown by the Bridgman method in a high-purity graphite mold. The resistance ratio, R(4.2°K) /R(298°K) , of the grown crystal was approximately 2.0 x 10-4. A number of slices, 1/4 in. thick, were cut from the crystal along the (110) plane and were mechanically and electrolyti-cally polished to remove the strained surface layer. The crystals were then rolled along the [112] direction to 80 pct reduction in thickness at -78°C. To minimize surface friction, the crystals were rolled between two layers of 0.005-in. teflon sheet. Rolling was interrupted, prior to completion, to remove the surface layers and the edges by electropolishing. These and similar precautions in handling the rolled crystals

OF THE many categories into which scientific knowledge has been arbitrarily divided, the one which has proved most applicable in our attempts to gain an insight into the details of steelmaking processes is physical chemistry. To the young metallurgist who has only recently survived a college course in this subject, the application of its principles to reactions in liquid steel should not be difficult. To one who has had no such course or whose auld acquaintance with the subject has all but been forgot, such application is all too often thwarted by the abstruse presentations of the subject found in many of the available textbooks. AS a tool for the control of a complex process involving many chemical reactions, physical chemistry can become very valuable. The specialist who is using this tool for many purposes and perhaps contributing to its development will want to know a great deal more about it than can be included in this book. He will be interested in its history, its accomplishments and limitations, and its applications to many and varied problems. To the steelmaker or metallurgist, however, it is only one of a number of tools that he must use. He is willing to forego the detailed study of its inner workings in order to concentrate upon the development of skill in its application. It is the purpose of this chapter to present a simplified view of physical chemistry as a tool of great potential usefulness. This purpose and the desire for brevity have required the elimination of many of the gadgets with which the tool is usually adorned. It is hoped that this simplification will be conducive to clear understanding. The beginner is urged not to overlook the more extended treatments of the standard textbooks.* He is assured at the same time that the basic tool is sound and serviceable and is guaranteed to give satisfaction if regularly lubricated with common sense. Certain parts of physical chemistry require rather formidable mathematics for their complete development, but in the main those applications in which we are here interested can be expressed in fairly

LAST year this Institute was good enough to accept some remarks by the writer regarding sound steel, entitled Plant for Hadfield Method of Producing Sound Steel Ingots, being a continuation of a research in which for some time the writer has been engaged, and full particulars of which were submitted in papers entitled A New Method of Revealing Segregation in Steel Ingots, and Method of Producing Sound Ingots, read before the Iron and Steel Institute in October, 1912. These papers gave rise to a very interesting discussion, both in England and America. This question is one of vital importance, as unless sound steel in the form of ingots is first obtained, sound steel in the finished forms of rail billets, rails, bars, sheets, and other forms cannot be expected. The working stresses demanded by modern conditions are so great, each year they probably approach nearer to the limit of safety, that without doubt those who produce steel will be compelled to pay the attention which this subject deserves. Moreover, the problem is not an insuperable one, as shown by the writer in the papers above referred to. In view of the information which has already been presented in these papers, it is not now necessary to go into details of the system advocated by the writer, except to repeat that the ingots and steel now referred to were produced by employing in the first place sound fluid steel, free from blowholes, this being poured into ordinary ingot molds, provided with the necessary feeding heads, the insulating slag medium, also charcoal and air blast or other suitable form of applying heat to the head portion of the ingot. Tile upper or head portion of the ingot is kept fluid by the intense heat generated by the air blast and charcoal, so that such fluid steel passes into the body of the ingot below the head, thus feeding and avoiding the shrinkage or piping which would otherwise occur. The result is the production of a sound steel ingot, free from blowholes, segregation and piping, and in which the waste portion, usually termed the discard, is but little over 7 or 8 per cent.

Diffusion rates of manganese, aluminum, titanium, and tungsten in nickel were measured at temperatures between 1100° and 1300°C. Activation energies, Q, and values of the frequency factor, Do, were calculated for each system. Values of Q were found to be within 15 pet of that for self-diffusion of nickel in agreement with present theories of diffusion. ONE of the most interesting problems in diffusion concerns factors governing the order of diffusion coefficients of various solutes in a common solvent metal at low solute concentrations. An early suggestion by Rhines and Mehl' was that diffusion coefficients might each approach that of the self-diffusion coefficient of the solvent itself. Later Thomas and Birchenall' pointed out correlations between the order of the diffusion coefficients and the freezing point depressions of the solvent by the various solutes. Other correlations have been sought. To settle this question it seems likely that much more data will be needed and, in particular, data collected at low solute concentrations. This type can be obtained by special analytical techniques as well as by use of radioactive tracers. The following study was made of diffusion of manganese, aluminum, titanium, and tungsten in a common solvent, nickel, at relatively low solute concentrations: 1—Production of alloys of nickel with manganese, aluminum, titanium. and tungsten at concentrations of the order of 1 atomic pet. 2—Use of pressure-welded diffusion couples in cylindrical form. 3—Diffusion anneals in the temperature range of 1100" to 1300°C. 4—Lathe sectioning of the diffused couples. 5—Spectrophotometric analyses of lathe turnings for the solute being studied. 6—Calculation of the diffusion coefficient for each of the solutes as a function of temperature. 7—Interpretation of results with current theories of diffusion. Experimental Work Materials—Two types of nickel were used in this research. The grade designated as Vacuum melted Mond nickel was used for all diffusion systems except the Mn-Ni system for which the Vacuum melted electrolytic nickel was used. Analyses of the two grades are given in Table I. The manganese used in making alloys was 99.9 + pet pure, aluminum 99.99 pet pure, titanium 99.9 pet pure, and tungsten of C.P. grade powder. Alloys used in this investigation were prepared by melting in vacuo or under a low pressure of argon. After melting, all heats except those of nickel-manganese were poured into a cylindrical copper mold 3 in. long and 1 in. ID. In the case of nickel-manganese, the alloys were solidified in the melting crucible. For nickel-aluminum heats alumina crucibles were used and for all other heats, zirconia crucibles.

This paper attempts a survey of the principles involved in the combustion of blast-furnace gas in boilers and stoves. I do not expect to be able to give much information which is actually new, since the laws and methods of calculation pertaining to this problem are contained in a number of handbooks; but, so far as I am aware, they have nowhere been treated exclusively with reference to this one problem of gas economy. The road which I follow is less that of strictly scientific research than that of the practical engineer, faced by operation problems which require a quick solution by easily accessible means without a prolonged search in scientific handbooks. For this purpose I give a number of tables and diagrams, as well as the results of many years1 practical working experience as combustion engineer, which I trust will prove useful to my readers. HlSTORICAL Considering the tremendous efforts made during the last 15 years to increase the efficiency of all kinds of power plants, it is highly surprising that until a comparatively very recent period, progress in the economical combustion of blast-furnace gas has been so slow, The explanation generally put forth, that fuel has been so cheap that it was hardly worth while to bother about this economy, will not hold good, for the greatest trouble was taken to improve the combustion of coal and to reduce the consumption of steam, The most plausible explanation appears to be the general impression, held as an accepted fact, that gas, especially hot, uncleaned, blast-furnace gas, was not a good boiler fuel. Many managers of high repute had tried unsuccessfully to improve the conditions of its use, and the dictum went forth that efficiencies of over 60 per cent., particularly with high loads, were impossible. This was the situation not only in the United States, with very cheap fuel, but also in Europe, where fuel prices are twice and three times as high.

G. O. SMITH,* Washington, D. C.—This program is itself a demonstration of the widespread interest in the subject of more efficient development and operation of oil fields. The statements of fact already presented and the views expressed are sufficient evidence that the engineering and economic principles fundamental to the idea of unit operation are much more generally accepted than they were even one year ago. And real progress has been made in putting these principles to the test. No one realizes better than I that the fight against waste, whether physical or economic, must be waged in the front-line trenches: Washington at best is only an observation post. Yet viewed from this distance the advance made in the last few months has been notable and to a high degree encouraging. Five years ago the Federal Oil Conservation Board, in its first contacts with the industry, raised the question, "How can new pools be explored without exploitation until new production is warranted by the country's needs?" Three and one-half years ago the Board, in its first report to the President, paid largest attention, among what it listed as fundamental conservation measures, to "cooperative methods in sane development of new fields." A year ago, in its third report, the Board again endorsed as the essential factor in conserving the nation's reserves of oil, "full cooperation in unit control, whether by voluntary agreement or by state enforcement." The function of this federal agency has been purely fact-finding and educational. The Oil Conservation Board early declared that the major part of its task was to help the industry "formulate the broader by-laws in the sense of conservation." And now, after these five years of eventful history in the oil industry, may I size up the situation as I see it from the Washington point of view? First of all, and fundamental to a successful issue, I have observed in the industry a gradual acceptance of technical opinion as the guide to executive action; and this has at last led to some agreement as to what procedure offers most promise. Analyzed in more detail, this highly desirable progress has consisted in "self-restraint actuated by enlightened self-interest." We see emerging the general desire of oil producers for efficiency in operation, which means low costs and high recovery. As shown by facts presented at this meeting, competition in drilling is in direct opposition to efficiency in oil production, in that such competition increases costs and lowers recovery. The only route to conservation of this natural resource and also of the capital and labor involved in making it available is through unit control, which substitutes cooperative, well-planned action for competitive, unregulated activity, forced by the individualism of a small minority of landowners or perhaps by a single operator. Or, in terms of actual experience, development of an oil field and its subsequent operation under unit control means the substitution of majority rule for minority rule, yet the minority enjoys to the full the resulting economic benefits. So far as it affects the public interest, unit operation of oil properties deserves unqualified approval. It means more oil from the same area over a longer period

The San Miguelito Field of Ventura County, California, lies along the coast approximately five miles northwest of the city of Ventura. The structure is one of several in the Ventura anticline, a series of anticlinal folds trending northwest-southeast through the San Miguelito Field. The Ventura Avenue Field lies to the southeast along the anticline, and Padre Canyon and Rin-con Fields lie to the northwest; the series then extends beneath the Pacific Ocean. Production is obtained from the Lower Pico and Repetto formations of Pliocene age, and oil accumulation is controlled by faulting, lithology and structure. The first well in the First Grubb Pool was completed in November, 1931, and to date 48 producing wells have been drilled on the 276 productive acres. Approximately 685 ft of net pay are contained in the eight sand bodies grossing 1,220 ft of section. Production of oil to date has been 15,-600,000 bbl. A gas injection project was instigated in April, 1940, but was discontinued in September, 1949. This paper is confined to a discussion of the development and performance history of the First Grubb Pool of the San Miguelito Field. LOCATION AND GEOLOGY The San Miguelito Oil Field is located in Ventura County about five miles northwest of the city of Ventura along the coastal highway to Santa Barbara. It is located within sections 23, 24, 25, and 30 of Township 3 North, Range 24 West, San Bernardino Base and Meridian. Surface elevation in the field ranges from sea level to plus 1,200 ft, and the terrain is extremely rugged. The structure is well defined on the surface and on the wall of the Amphitheatre Canyon where appears a so-called "text book" anticlinal section. The San Miguelito structure is an asymmetrical, elongated anticline about two miles long and three-fourths of a mile wide. The trend of the axis of the anticline is northwest-southeast. Fig. 9 illustrates the contours and major faults of this structure. Dips on the southwesterly flank average about 40 degrees, whereas the northeasterly flank ranges from 60 to 75 degrees. There are several faults striking generally east and west. These faults do not appear to affect materially the area of accumulation or performance behavior. It is believed that accumulation was affected by steeply dipping beds and extremely low permeability of the northeast flank of the structure. As shown by the typical log, Fig. 1. the San Miguelito Field is divided into two stratigraphic producing intervals. The First Grubb Pool comprises the interval from the "G" to "L" markers; the Second Grubb Pool from the "L" to "M" markers. The First Grubb Pool, ranging in thickness from 1,105 to 1,680 ft, with an average of 1,220 ft, includes approximately 685 ft of oil-bearing sands. The First Grubb zone consists of eight sand intervals separated by shales. The shale bodies separating the eight sand intervals within the First Grubb Pool are continuous throughout the major part of the structure and serve as an effective barrier. Many of the thin, irregular shale or siltstone streaks within these sand bodies are discontinuous and do not affect well performance appreciably. The productive horizons in the First Grubb Pool are siltstones and sandstones of the Lower Pico and Repetto formations of Pliocene age. It is apparent from inspection of the typical log that the "G" to "L" interval might have been separated into at least six producing zones and selectively pro. duced. Unfortunately the electric log and some of our modern tools were not available or were in their infancy dur. ing the period 1931 through 1937. Not until 1937 when eight wells had been completed were there sufficient geological data to permit definition of the sand bodies. Activities of magnesium in liquid Mg-Sn alloys have been determined between 5 and 90 at. pct Sn and 990" and 1290°K by an improved isopiestic method wherein tin specimens, heated in a temperature gradient and contained in crucibles of special geometry, were equilibrated with magnesium vapor in a closed titanium system. The crucibles were designed so that the equilibrium compositions of the specimens were satisfactorily preserved on termination of the experimental runs by quenching. The activity values are in excellent agreement with those predicated on the phase diagram and allowed a delineation of the solidus curve of the compound Mg2Sn near its melting point. EQUATIONS have been recently derived relating the chemical potentials of the components to the liquidus and enthalpy data for binary systems exhibiting one congruently melting compound.' The liquidus curve of the Mg-Sn system between the eutectics was carefully redetermined and the thermodynamic properties thus calculated were in reasonably good agreement with values derived from electromotive-force measurements of an,' but differed greatly from the iso-piestically determined values of Ashtakala and Pid-geon.3 The present study was initiated: a) to resolve the discrepancies; b) to develop a method for measuring activities in systems having volatile (and possibly highly reactive) components; and c) to use the method in a general investigation of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of Mg-Group IVb systems, i.e., Mg-Pb, Mg-Sn, Mg-Ge, and Mg-Si. This paper describes the results for the Mg-Sn system. An isopiestic technique, originally developed by Herasymenko 4 and adapted for alloys having a component of high reactivity and low volatility,5-8 was modified in this study by using crucibles designed to preserve the equilibrium composition of highly volatile liquid specimens on quenching from high temperatures. Tin specimens, contained in tightly covered graphite crucibles and heated in a temperature gradient, were equilibrated with magnesium vapor of fixed pressure from a magnesium reservoir kept at constant temperature in a previously evacuated and sealed titanium tube. THE high-alumina clays of Missouri are interesting for several reasons. They are the only sedimentary deposits in North America of first grade (over 70 pct A1,0,) diaspore and boehmite sufficiently large to be mined commercially. Mineralogically, they are composed of diaspore and boehmite in intimate coexistence, but gibbsite, the common hydrated alumina mineral in bauxite and laterite, is absent, or is exceedingly scanty if present.* Therefore, the Missouri high-alumina clays do not represent typical laterization. The physical chemistry leading to their mineral genesis, and the geolbgical setting for their formation, present important problems for scientific study. The origin of the Missouri high-alumina clays has been discussed in earlier reports by Allen1 (1935) and McQueen 8, 9 (1929, 1943). These investigations were made under difficult conditions, however, because no diaspore deposit had been opened where a Paleozoic (Pennsylvanian) rock cover lay undisturbed over the high-alumina clay. The relationship of the clay to only the underlying rocks could actually be observed. Lacking the guidance of critical postdepositional geologic evidence, undue and erroneous emphasis was placed on the postdepositional leaching of the deposits in the theories on the origin of diaspore and boehmite from clay (hydrous aluminosilicates) . With new geologic evidence at hand, a clearer picture can be made for the origin of the Missouri high-alumina deposits. In this paper the geology of a diaspore deposit whose original Paleozoic cover had not been eroded will be described and interpreted genetically. The close relationship of boehmite and diaspore (also with kaolinite and a chloritic mineral), will be established. A theory of origin for the high-alumina clays, consistent with the new data, will be postulated.

The effects of drilling variable on rotary drilling rates and efficiencies have been studied by a series of laboratory drilling tests. TWO-cone 1.25-in. diameter hits were used to drill vertically upwards into rock samples at corltrolled weights and rates of rotation. Shale, sandstone and specially prepared concrete samples were used in this study. Power input to the ririllirig systeln was measured and drilling chips collected for energy — .size reduction studies. Reasouably good correlations between drilling variables and rates of penetrotion were found. Qrrantities that are difficult to evaluate include rock strength parameters and the effects of bit wear. Effects of bit size and geormetry require further investigation. Analysis of the drilling chips confirmed the premise that, for rocks containing two or more mineral constituents of diflerent strengths, a greater amourrt of rock breakage occurs in the weaker constituent. Drilling conditions which required greater amounts of energy produced finer drilling chips. As bit tooth wear progressed, drilling chips became finer. Efficiency of rotary drilling as a rock breakage mechanism was extremely low. Comparison was made with theoretical energy requirements and with energy requirements for size reduction by comminution methods. INTRODUCTION Many technological developments and innovations have made possible the successful drilling of oil wells by the rotary method to depths exceeding 20,000 ft. Bigger, more powerful rigs, better steels, improved bit design and more careful control of the circulating system have all contributed to this success. Despite these advances comparatively little is known regarding the basic mechanism of rock breakage by the rotary drilling process. Future improvements and, in particular, reduction of drilling costs will undoubtedly require a clearer understanding of the variables controlling effectiveness and efficiency of rotary drilling. Rotary drilling is inherently an inefficient means of producing rock breakage. Loss of energy in transmission from the surface to the cutting mechanism may be large, thus limiting the total amount of energy which may be applied to rock breakage. Increased efficiency may be realized by improved energy transmission methods such as the turbodrill. Conversion of transmitted energy to rock breakage by use of rotating cutter teeth is likewise inefficient. Improvement of cutter efficiency has been obtained essentially by empirical means —changes in bit tooth size, shape and spacing, and tooth deletion to give clean bottom-hole patterns. The present work was undertaken to investigate the factors controlling rates of bit penetration under laboratory drilling conditions. Laboratory drilling apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The effects of rock strength and bit wear on drilling rates were investigated. Drill cuttings were analyzed to determine the character of breakage and to compare this with other methods of producing rock breakage. THE literature concerning the remelting of aluminum and its alloys is very rich. Unfortunately the greater part of the papers about this subject have no scientific value, for the theories or explanations are too often in opposition to the laws of physical chemistry. Furthermore only a few of the methods of purification1,2 are considered in the literature. Hence it has seemed necessary to the author to sketch a general theory of the purification of secondary aluminum. The purpose of the purification is to eliminate the impurities that the charges and the atmosphere of the furnaces bring into the bath during the successive remeltings. Indeed scrap as well as metal can be used when soiled with oil, greases, water, .. , if it has been sufficiently dried and contains oxides. At the melting point of the metal, the oils and greases are decomposed into their constituent elements H2, 02, H2O, C02, CO, CH4, and others. These gases are added to the corresponding gases in the atmosphere of the furnace. The impurities introduced into the metal during the remelting will accordingly be the products resulting from the action of these gases on the liquid bath. The quantity of hydrogen that is soluble in aluminum and its alloys is given by the relation of Sieverts3 as a function of its partial pressure PH2 in the atmosphere [m = K _%/PH, [I]] where K is a constant, which depends only upon the temperature and increases with it. The experiments of Röntgen and Braun4, Röntgen and Möller5, Bircumshaw6 and Winterhager7 have rendered it possible to determine the value of K, when the temperature is inferior to 1.000°K. One obtains: [log K = - 4,702.5 + 0.238 [2]] Besides its usual signification, the term PH2 represents also the internal pressure of dissolved hydrogen, since in the equilibrium, that is, when no gas exchange occurs between the two phases, the pressures of hydrogen in the metal and in the atmosphere must be equal. Eq I shows that when the partial pressure of H2 increases the amount of dissolved hydrogen in equilibrium increases, and that, if the contrary occurs, the quantity of H2 should diminish. However, if for any reason the diffusion of hydrogen is hindered and the total amount of dissolved gas remains constant while the temperature lowers, the internal pressure of H2 increases until it reaches the value of the hydrostatic pressure. At this point, bubbles of hydrogen appear in the bath and escape out of it. The amount of hydrogen in the metal is then limited by a maximum depending on the hydrostatic pressure, which is practically equal to one atmosphere. Indeed hydrogen does not accumulate in the form of a hydride appearing as a separate solid phase. However, even the mechanism of the solubility is not yet elucidated. Detailed descriptions are given of materials, apparatus and the experimental procedure used to study the effect of bacteria on sandstone permeability. The factors affecting permeability during injection of bacterial suspensions which have been investigated are: (I) concentration of bacteria; (2) core permeability and median pore size; (3) species of bacteria, mode of aggregation and relative size; (4) injection rate or pressure differential; (5) mean pressure; and (6) depth of penetration of bacteria. The investigation demonstrated that bacteria cannot reduce core pertneability to zero and that their effect on permeability is subject to definite limitations. Remedial or permeability restoration studies also were made. Acidization in combination with reverse flow war found to be an effective method for restoring permeability In cores partially plugged with bacteria. The relationship between the bacterial quantities in the laboratory tests and those found in field operations is discussed. The linear laboratory flow data have been translated into terms of field radial systems; these data indicate the most practical methods of maintaining injection rates in the presence of bacteria are to increase injection pressures or hydraulically fracture the formation. INTRODUCTION It has long been known that various bacteria flourish in the above-ground components of oil field water-injection systems. The presence of these bacteria has led to the suspicion that they might enter into the causes for reduction of injection well permeability, but only recently has an attempt been made to describe the effects quantitatively.1 Biocides are used in many cases without a firm knowledge as to whether the bacteria are killed, or if they are, whether the dead cells affect formation permeability. This project was undertaken as part of a study to determine the effect of bacteria, residual oil and precipitated solids such as iron sulfide or calcium carbonate on the permeability of sandstones and to learn whether any of these materials adversely affect brine injectivity in secondary recovery or disposal operations. This report deals with that portion relating to the effect of bacteria. MATERIALS CORES Three different permeability ranges of Berea sandstone cores were used in the study. The range of initial, absolute brine permeabilities kj were: high — 278 to 400 md: medium—130 to 162 md; and low—17.7 to 48.3 md. The permeability data for the cores used in the tests are included in Table 1. All cores were cut to a nominal 1 in. diameter. Following air permeability determinations, they were molded with an epoxy resin in 1.5 in. ID aluminum sleeves. The sleeves had drilled and tapped holes for intermediate pressure connections along the length of the cores. After molding, the high- and medium-permeability cores were trimmed to 4 in. in length and the low-permeability cores to 2 in. These lengths resulted in pore volumes of approximately 10.9, 10.4 and 4.4 ml, respectively, for the high-, medium- and low-permeability cores. Pressure-transmitting channels were drilled through the plastic into the core proper, using the sleeve holes as drill guides. Width and depth of channel penetration into the core proper were approximately 0.03 in. and 0.05 in., respectively. Three pressure taps were used with all cores; for the high- and medium-permeability cores the taps were spaced 1 in. apart; for the low-permeability cores the taps were spaced 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 in. from the inlet end. Pore size distributions were calculated from restored-state capillary pressure curves for representative cores in each of the three permeability ranges. In each case the pore size range with the greatest percentage of the pore space included the very small pores up to 0.5 micron in radius. The median pore radii were in the 5.5 to 6 micron range for the high-permeability cores; in the 4.5 to 5 micron range for the medium-permeability cores; and in the 3.5 to 4 micron range for the low-permeability cores.

If the reader finds that the basic information in a commodity chapter is insufficient, he can consult the appropriate sources in this chapter to find more detailed or more up-to-date information. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 5th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 4th edition (1975) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Review. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. The Industrial Minerals Directory 1977, 1st ed., Metal Bulletin Books, Ltd., London, provides addresses of organizations in the field. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 18th annual meeting in 1982, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geological and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications: New Publications of the Geological Survey, US Geological Survey, 329 National Center, Reston, VA 22092 and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, US Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, 1970, and 1975. Four major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, Mineral Trade Notes, and Minerals and Materials. The last two are particularly good for news of foreign developments. The Bureau of Mines Employee Directory, available at all USBM offices, lists addresses and telephone numbers for all offices as well as same for all commodity and area specialists.

A century ago, Thomas Carlyle sketched the Emblem of the Wasting Candle in one of his papers. "Terar Dum Prosim" he wrote under the candle-" May I be wasted so that I be of use." The application of his reasoning is an excellent guide for a discussion of the scrap problems of today. The General Electric Co. has addressed itself to the need of proper and careful preparation of scrap metals for many years. A supervisor of salvage directs this work in each of the works. Generally he is an engineer and has had broad factory training. He gives general direction to the collection, preparation and disposition of scrap materials. He operates the extensive facilities which each works has provided for the centralization and control of scrap accumulations, and also initiates studies leading to the reduction of scrap accruing from machining and assembly operations. r We recognize that each industry, each factory, each locality faces a different set of conditions. Irrespective of size, in a plant employing 20 men or a large works with 15,00 employees-certain fundamental principles can be applied for organization and the collection of scrap. The manufacture of electrical apparatus is a highly complicated intricate business. In one area we make electronic tube and adjacent buildings house the manufacture of steam turbines. Both are instruments for power-different in size and in many cases serving different fields of application. Unlike the great industries that build automobiles, trucks, or engines where repetitive operations, once solved, set the stage, electrical manufacturers' plants are large jobbing shops. Therefore, we must carefully plan every step in handling the scrap that "in so wasting to produce the finished motor or locomotive-we can return this product to reprocessing and ultimate use." ESSENTIALS FOR SALVAGE EFFICIENCY The essential steps for an efficient salvage department are: I. Selection of Personnel.-An able foreman would be a man of broad experience and understanding-one who commands the respect of the entire foreman group as well as that of his own men. In the interest of clean scrap, it is necessary to acquaint the foremen in the separate manufacturing units with the need of careful segregation in the shop and the best methods of obtaining it. At least 40 per cent contact time should be devoted for this purpose. 2. The physical equipment of the salvage department should be devised and selected to handle complete, at one point, all scrap operations. Bulky materials as produced by some large shops can be economically placed in salable shape at the divisional point. Because salvage

The term clay is somewhat ambiguous unless specifically defined because it is used both as a rock term and as a particle size term. Actually most persons using the term clay realize that it has a double meaning and in most instances define it. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define because of the wide variety of materials that compose it so that the definition has to be general. Clay is a natural, earthy, fine-grained material composed largely of a limited group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. Many definitions state that a clay has the property of plasticity when wet, but some clays are not plastic, i.e., halloysite and flint clay; however, most clay materials are plastic when wet. As a particle size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum size particles in the clay size grade are defined differently on some grade scales. Soil investigators and mineralogists generally use 2 microns as the maximum size. The Wentworth scale' defines clay as material finer than approximately 4 microns. Grim' has found it convenient to use the term clay material for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material and in this way can include clays, shales, or argillites, and some soils if they are argillaceous. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, still the term is generally understood by all who use it. Clay is an abundant natural raw material and has an amazing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. In order to understand better the relationships between the clays and their uses, a brief discussion of the structure, chemical composition, and identification of the clay minerals is given. Mineralogical Composition of Clays Clays are composed of certain groups of hydrous aluminum, magnesium, and iron silicates that may contain calcium, potassium, and other ions, which are called the clay minerals, and other minerals of variable composition, which are nonclay minerals. Both clay minerals and nonclay minerals influence the properties of a clay material. In order to understand the relationship between clay minerals and the properties of a clay material, a short summary of the structure and composition of clay minerals is necessary. Any scheme of classification tends to impose a certain rigidity and as new and additional data become available it is necessary to revise classifications. Brindley3 has discussed the classification and structural mineralogy of clays in very lucid fashion and chose a classification based on structural features and chemical composition. Grim2 proposed a tentative classification which is based on the structural attributes of the various clay minerals. This classification is relatively simple and workable, and is shown as follows: I. Discussion of the Paper by C. E. Corson, which was presented at the London Meeting, July, 1906. (See Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 11, September, pp. 725 to 742.) ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :-On close examination I think it will be found that the evidence by which Mr. Corson claims to have shown the inaccuracy of a statement I made a few years ago, is far from convincing. This statement is:- "Hot work, as such, has no influence upon the structure of the metal. Indirectly, however, by retarding crystallization until a lower temperature is reached, it may influence its structure most decidedly ; but the same results could be accomplished by heat-treatment alone, i.e., by reheating the unworked metal to the temperature from which the unworked piece was allowed to cool undisturbedly." The Metallographist, vol. ii., p. 267 (under the head of "Changes of Structure Brought About by Work"). Of the two pieces of steel tested by Mr. Corson, one was worked and finished at a " cherry red " and ' the other reheated to a cherry red, and the assumption was made that, in both cases the temperature was about 715° C., although no pyrometric device was used to record it. The possibility of considerable difference in temperature alone is so great as to invalidate Mr. Corson's inferences. The apparent temperature, moreover, is so close to the critical point of the steel as to render any conclusion very hazardous. -It is not at all evident that the annealed piece was reheated past its critical point, in which case reheating would have had practically no effect. Nor is it evident that the piece forged and finished at a cherry red was not actually below the critical point, which, by definition, I have called cold worked. Mr. Corson's explanation that " Under proper reheating, on the other hand, the steel becomes a solid solution from which crystals of approximate homogeneity and uniform size may separate" will not be readily understood.

THE purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of agitation upon the flotation of chal-cocite. It is believed that the concentration of collector which is required to produce a water-repellent surface upon the mineral is determined among other things by the rate of collector diffusion through an impeding film of more or less stagnant fluid. Its thickness depends upon the intensity of agitation. In the first part of this study a method is developed for determining the thickness of the fluid film upon a polished surface of synthetic chalcocite. The film thickness is then determined as precisely as possible under three readily reproducible condi-tions of agitation intensity. These determinations serve as a quantitative evaluation of agitation. In Part 2 it is demonstrated that in solutions of lime at PH 10.5 and in the absence of air or dissolved oxygen the concentration of collector required to develop water-repellency upon the surface in any given time is a function of the fluid film thickness, and that after about 10 min the relation becomes linear. This points to the possibility that the collector ions may be involved in a diffusional process through the fluid film. In Part 3 it is shown that where air is present more collector is required to produce water-repellency than for the case in which air is excluded. Next, it is shown that for the latter case the most minute amount of sodium sulphide suffices to preclude development of water-repellency. Both oxygen and sulphide are in a sense, therefore, depres- sants for chalcocite in a lime solution at PH 10.5. When oxygen and sulphide are present simultaneously there is a region of minimum critical collector concentration for water-repellency which is very markedly lower than the concentration where oxygen alone or where sulphide alone is present. Moreover, this minimum appears to be identical with the collector concentration which is required where sulphide and oxygen are both excluded. This would appear to indicate that in certain ranges of concentration of oxygen and sulphide, each cancels the effect of the other. The range of concentration of solution for this effect in solutions saturated with oxygen is a function of the agitation intensity. Thus we are led to believe that a chemical reaction involving sulphide and oxygen occurs at the surface of the chalcocite. Part 4 of this study is a further development of this idea and some of its consequences from an electrochemical standpoint, while in Part 5 the disappearance of sulphide from pulps of several minerals is noted with an indication that both dissolved oxygen and the mineral are necessary, the reaction being catalytic or pseudocatalytic. Part 1. Determination of Fluid Film Thickness The Fluid Film Concept: The hindrance to the diffusion of collector to the surface of the chalcocite is a barrier of stagnant fluid in the vicinity of the surface. It is the same barrier that limits the rate of transfer of heat, the rate of solution of dissolving crystals, or any of the other rates pertaining to chemical engineering unit operations in which the film resistance to diffusion plays a principal role.' Fluid films are present upon the surface to an extent which varies with the geometry and intensity of agitation. They result from the fact that in the region within the fluid near a surface, motion is entirely parallel to it. From the standpoint of transfer to or away from the interface the effect is as though the fluid were stagnant. Outside of the film, movement of the fluid may be streamline or turbu-

The anodic treatment of aluminum presents problems of scientific as well as of commercial interest.l-3 Of particular interest is the fact that, during the anodic oxidation process, the oxide continues to form at the metal-oxide interface under any oxide previously formed. This has led to speculation as to the mechanism involved in the formation of the relatively thick oxide coatings that are used commercially for decorative or protective purposes. Furthermore, the ability of certain types of oxide coatings to adsorb dyes and other substances has stimulated research to determine the actual structure of these adsorptive coatings. It has been found that anodic oxide coatings on aluminum are composed essentially of aluminum oxide. They are formed by the action of oxygen ions penetrating to the metal surface during the electrolytic oxidation treatment. These coatings can be formed in a number of different electrolytes, as for example, those which contain sulphuric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid, or boric acid. These are the commonest and most useful electrolytes employed commercially. Except for certain specific conditions of formation, the coatings in general have been found to be amorphous alumina, as far as can be determined by X-ray or electron-diffraction methods. Anodic oxidation processes can be arranged in three rather general classes if they are grouped in relation to the solvent action of the electrolyte on the coating.4 In the first class, the electrolyte has little or no solvent action on the coating that is formed. In general, coatings produced under such circumstances are nonporous and non-adsorptive. In the second class, the electrolyte exerts an appreciable solvent action on the coating. These coatings are porous and adsorptive. Finally, for the third class, the electrolyte tends to dissolve the coating about as rapidly as it is formed. This action produces electrolytic brightening or anodic polishing of the aluminum surface and at most leaves only a very thin film of oxide. The nonporous and nonadsorptive type of oxide film is represented by the coatings that are formed when solutions of boric acid are employed as the electrolyte. It is especially significant that these impervious films are formed in electrolytes that exert little or no solvent action on the coating. Where a boric acid electrolyte is used, the coating tends to form rapidly, with the result that the flow of current is soon reduced to substantially zero. This indicates that the growth of the coating has stopped. As a rule, the thickness of the coating is roughly proportional to the voltage employed for formation and the coatings of this type are exceedingly thin. In an electrolyte of this type, the coating has a high resistance when the aluminum is made anode; consequently, any current that may flow (leakage current) is very
