RESEARCH is undertaken to find out what must be done when what we are doing now is no longer adequate. To accomplish this end, researchers apply the truths of nature to industrial evolution. A survey conducted with the co-operation of 58 universities and colleges offering degrees in mineral engineering was the basis for the table accompanying this article. This survey was undertaken with the object of presenting to faculties and student bodies, as well as to industry, all available information on what action the educational institutions of the country have taken to provide the properly trained researchers so vitally needed. A hoped for result is that the great variety of opportunities available will encourage some undergraduate students to continue in their field beyond attainment of a B.S. degree.

THE Climax district is in northeastern Lake County, Colorado, on Fremont Pass (elevation 11,320 ft.) where the continental divide runs east-west joining high peaks of the Mosquito Range with the Sawatch Range, prominent ranges of the central Rocky Mountains. The mining towns of Leadville and Kokomo are thirteen miles to the south and seven miles to the northwest, respectively. Good highways lead to Denver (100 miles) by way of Kokomo, Loveland Pass, and Idaho Springs, and to Colorado Springs by way of Leadville. The ore deposit and mine are about one mile east of Fremont Pass and 600 ft. higher on the southwestern flank of Bartlett Mountain, a peak in the Mosquito Range. The molybdenite deposit lies within the Colorado mineral belt extending across the Rocky Mountains from Jamestown and Boulder to Silverton and Telluride. (See Fig. 1.) Fremont Pass is a broad open divide separating the drainage of the Tenmile River (Pacific) from that of the East Fork of the Arkansas River (Atlantic) ; but the mountains to the east and west are extremely rugged; altitudes in the vicinity vary from 11,000 to 14,000 ft. The aim of this paper is to disclose some of the correlations between rock parameters, hidden in Wuerker's "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rocks," 1956. The empirical relations concern dry rocks of varying porosity. Curves and equations interrelating the specific gravity, compressive strength, bar velocity, and Poisson's ratio are presented. In 1956 Wuerker published his "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rock", in which various physical properties of rocks determined by different authorities, are tabulated systematically. The tables are primarily intended for use by mining-, quarrying- and ore-dressing engineers. Since the list of measured parameters for each type of rock includes properties such as — grain size, specific gravity, porosity, compressive strength, static elastic cons:ants (moduli of elasticity, rigidity, specific damping capacity and longitudinal bar velocity) the tables are also of considerable interest to the practical geophysicist. Correlations between rock parameters may enable geophysicists, geologists and civil engineers to transiate measurements from one parameter to another. Even if these translations are of limited accuracy, or valid only within certain specified ranges, they often serve a useful parpose. The aim of this paper is to disclose some of the correlations between rock parameters concealed in wuerker's Tables. Throughout this paper the following symbols and units are used unless otherwise stated: Sg is Specific gravity, the ratio of the density of a specimen to the density of water at 4°C. P is Porosity, in %, the ratio of the volume of voids in a specimen to its total volume. CS is Compressive strength in 1000 p.s.i., the stress under which a specimen will fracture when undergoing a standard compression test. V is Bar Velocity in kilo-feet/sec, the velocity of longitudinal seismic waves measured in a slender bar type specimen. Vc is Bulk or Constraint Velocity in kilo-feet/ sec, the velocity of longitudinal seismic waves measured in a very large specimen.+is Reciprocai bar velocity in millisecs/ft (1 millisec = 10-3 sec). cis Poisson's ratio, the ratio of the lateral to longitudinal strain of a body under longitudinal stress. WAR has wrought sharp and sudden changes in the pattern of the oil industry. The most obvious and most striking of such changes have been in the fields of transportation and refining. A third of the world's total oil production formerly started to market, tanker-borne, over the waters of the Gulf and Caribbean. Most of this oil went to our North Atlantic ports, supply points for the world's greatest consuming center. This tremendous traffic, disrupted by the loss of tankers as a result of requisition for military purposes and by the activity of enemy submarines, has had to be substituted largely by such lines of supply as could be improvised without loss of too much time. No single solution for this gigantic problem has been found nor is it likely to be entirely solved for some time to come. It has been solved in part, however, by rearrangement, reversals, and patching up of existing pipe-line systems; by overland transport of crude and products in tank cars on a scale never before attempted; by barging over inland waterways; and through the construction at long last of the "big-inch" line, the first leg of which is just being put into operation as far as Norris City, III. The tank-car traffic alone, reaching a peak of deliveries of 856,710 barrels per day into District 1 during the week ending Sept. 19, 1942, and accomplished at an expense of millions of dollars in extraordinary transportation costs, defrayed by the Defense Supply Corp. and by the mobilization of tank cars from all over the nation, is a story worth the telling but by some of those who directed it.

Most bituminous coal mined near Eastern industrial areas requiring high-Btu pipeline gas is caking and therefore unsuitable for fixed-bed pres- sure gasification by present techniques. If the caking property of such coal can be destroyed, the resulting fuel can be gasified in a fixed bed at pressure with steam and oxygen as a preliminary step in making a high-Btu gas. To find a practical way to convert strongly caking coals of granular or small lump size to noncaking fuel was the object of this study. In previous work, strongly caking coals of 1/8- to 1½ -in. size were converted to a noncaking coal char by treatment in a static bed in about 3 hours1 and coal of 18-100 Tyler mesh in a fluidized bed in about 5 min.2 An inert gas such as steam, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or a mixture of all three with a small amount of oxygen was used in both studies. In our work a strongly caking bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam of 4-8 Tyler mesh size was converted to a noncaking form in free-fall in about 2 sec by dropping it through a countercurrent flow of steam containing 4% to 7% oxygen at 1150º-1200°F and 300 psig. This method should also be applicable to smaller-sized material.

ALL previous records were broken by the Iron and Steel Division, in the number of sessions, the number of papers, and the attendance. In addition to ten papers (all preprinted) on properties, structure, aid hardenability of, carbon and alloy steels, eight formal papers were presented on one or more phases of steelmaklng, and a symposium on the determination of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel. This last started at 2 p.m. and was going strong with more than a third of the audience still present at 6 p.m.

We have here an example of laborious work undertaken in the true scientific spirit and by right methods. Loose statements and rash conjectures are here brought to the test of chemical analyses. By such work only may we hope to reach reliable conclusions and finally to solve the complex problems presented by the occurrence of ore-deposits. Such work as this is not only scientific but Is in the highest degree practical; for while a crude and imperfect science, by interfering with the results of approved empirical methods, may be positively hurtful, a more perfect science must eventually become the only sure guide to practice. Such a more perfeet science can only be reached by such work as Dr. Don's. I am sure every member of the Institute will unite with me in the hope that Dr. Don will continue his work, and that his example will incite others to similar work. S. F. Emmons, Washington, D.
