STRUCTURAL steels containing chromium have become widely used in the last 20 years. In the earlier part of this period the major applications were in chromium-molybdenum aircraft tubing and similar special high-strength steels. During the past 10 years there has been a notable expansion in the use of chromium-bearing steel for structural purposes when welding was utilized for fabrication. The chromium-bearing steels introduced by Saklatwalla1 (chromium-copper), Kinzel2 (chromium-manganese-silicon), and Schultz3 (chromium-copper) are being extensively used at the present time.

A statistical study of machinability led the writer to examine existing data in regard to a thermal conductivity-mechanical properties relationship. Various functional relationships were proposed and the multiple correlation determined by statistical methods discussed in detail in the 1iterature.4 The relationship having the greatest engineering and statistical significance is discussed below. The data for cast and wrought aluminum alloys''2 have been compiled and analyzed separately. The results of these analyses are presented in Table I. The empirical equations for estimating the thermal conductivity (cal sec-' cm-I °C) are: for cast aluminum alloys K = 0.584 -0.00984/ -0.00263 Hb [1] and for wrought aluminum alloys K = 0.604 -0.00424l- 0.00170 Hb [2] where 1 and Hb are the percentage elongation and Brinell hardness number. Results of a similar analysis pertaining to stainless steel3 are also given in Table I. This empirical equation for estimating thermal conductivity (Btu per sq ft per hr per °F per in.) is K = 216.19- 1.716l - 0.0997 Hb [3] The relationship between electrical resistivity and mechanical properties was also examined for aluminum alloys using the same statistical method. The role of dispersion is described in the wet grinding of ores using tumbling media mills and the flotation of coal, sulfide, and non-sulfide ores. Emphasis is placed on characterizing the effects of dispersion in laboratory tests using engineering models which provide information useful for the improvement and control of existing plant operations. Significant economic gains in the above named operations have been realized using these models as guides for full- scale plant testing.

The meaning and the utility of redox potential (Eh) measurements in sulfide flotation systems are examined. Since some preliminary plant Eh and laboratory flotation data were available, experiments were made to establish the pH range at which a platinum electrode might be used for such measurements without much difficulty in aerated systems. Triangular wave voltammetry was used to study the surface conditions of the electrode immersed in pyrrhotite suspensions at different pH. The measured Eh both at the plant and the laboratory is interpreted in terms of the experimental water-oxygen line.

RECENT lead-smelting techniques have tended toward use of high-grade concentrates with minimum amounts of flu, accompanied by profitable employment of roast reaction.1-5 In order to better understand these smelting processes, thermodynamical calculations have been carried out on the Pb-S-0 system, and the results obtained have been presented in isothermal reaction diagrams in which log Ps, and logPo, were the axes. The diagram thus constructed seems to be more convenient to grasp the equilibrium aspect than those published hitherto.6-8

The paper describes the construction of a clay pad in Southern California. The pad consisted of a mixture of in situ soil and imported clay products. The paper summarizes design considerations. Laboratory permeability tests performed on samples removed from the pad formed part of the quality control requirement of the State of California Water Quality Control Board. The paper presents statistical analysis of the data (about 70 permeability tests in total) and their significance in controlling seepage losses. The results obtained from an investigation of the first pad-area after completion of the leach cycle are presented and discussed. Results from visual observations and laboratory tests are presented.

THE unsteady-state type of gas-liquid metal diffusion cell1 has found considerable application.2"4 Cells of this general design can function as steady-state cells if allowed to operate long enough to reach steady state. This report tells of some success in the adaption of this type of cell for steady-state work, using the 0-Ag system in which the mass transfer of the gas "species" is basically controlled by diffusion in the liquid. The gas, e.g-., O2, is maintained in the cell tube'-3 at 1 atm pressure, Fig. 1, by buret and sensitive oil manometer. The gas, after diffusing through the stagnant metal, escapes at the annular metal surface around the tube at a lower constant partial pressure, in this case that of O2 in slowly flowing air, 1 atm.

BEFORE World War I, and even prior to World War II, lithium was considered among the rare elements. Mining was limited to exploitation of a few well selected sources of rich minerals recoverable by hand cobbing methods. Within the past five years the situation has changed radically. Many new sources have been explored and developed, principally in Canada, North Carolina, and Southern Rhodesia. The prime raw material for lithium recovery is spodumene. In Southern Rhodesia, however, both petalite, a modified spodumene, and lepidolite, a lithium mica, are being mined in quantity.

The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 provides a set of rules for proceeding with the identification and selection of sites for a mined geologic repository as well as for interim storage facilities for high level waste in the event storage facilities are needed. The following paper summarizes the sequence of procedures in site selection, and presents the interaction of governmental agencies, the states, the public, and affected Indian tribes in this process. Several agencies have published regulations assocated with the selection of high level waste sites. These regulations set down a diverse collection of requirements designed to ensure public safety. This paper identifies the organizations working to satisfy these requirements, and outlines the role of the geotechnical community in performing data collection activities to support these same requirements.

At Weed Heights, Nev., precipitation plays a major role in the plant operation. Almost two-thirds of the present copper production is leach-precipitation plant copper. The entire plant complex processes about 135,000 tons of low grade copper ore per week. Of this tonnage, 49,000 tons of about 0.78% sulfide ore are treated in the concentrator. This is handled in the conventional manner of crushing, grinding, and concentration of the copper sulfide by flotation.

The production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic industries in the United States with a capital investment—about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines1 in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. The United States produces about 40 per cent of the world's fluorspar, of which about 90 per cent comes from the Illinois and Kentucky deposits along the Ohio River.2 Further detailed information on the fluorspar industry in the United States is given by Hatmaker and Davis.28 The concentration of the coarser sizes presents relatively little difficulty, good recoveries being obtained with jigs and tables. Whole-rock analyses of limestones, fine-gralned dolostones and coarser-grained dolostones adjacent to mineralized breccias (Coy mine, Mascot-Jefferson City district) were compared with similar lithologies adjacent to apparently non-mineralized breccias at the new Thorn Hill section located approximately 39 km north of the Coy mine. Specimens were analyzed for Ca, Mg, Si, Al, K, Fe, Mn, Sr, Br, C1, S, Ti and P using X-ray fluorescence analysis. The concentrations of the major and most minor elements for Thorn Hill specimens fall within the range of concentrations for Coy mine specimens; however, significant differences (probability < 0.05) were noted for Fe, C1 and Br for fine-grained dolostones and for MgO, Fe and Mn for the coarser-grained dolostones. No significant differences were detected for the limestones.

Dick Hunt is known for having said, "Ore bodies are found but mines are made." This was certainly true of the Ertsberg-it was stumbled upon, literally, by a group of mountain climbers, but to develop it into a mine took 12 years of concerted effort. For more than a century, explorers had attempted to penetrate the jungles of New Guinea and climb the snow-covered Mt. Carstensz, named for a Dutch navigator who first saw it in 1620. But the first to succeed was the Colijn expedition which reached the 5030-m (16,500-ft) pinnacle in December 1936 after starting out from the south coast57 days earlier. Members of that expedition were A. H. Colijn and Jean Jacques Dozy, employees of Shell Oil Co., and Lt. Wissel, a pilot in the Royal Dutch Navy.

Procedures are given for calculating stresses in underground tunnel supports which accounts both for the structural behavior of the support and that of the adjacent rock mass. Stresses in the support are caused by service loads and rock reactions. Service loads are due to rock pressures, hydrostatic and hydraulic pressures, selfweight of the support, or other utilitarian-type loads. Rock reactions, equal and opposite those in the support, are due to the deformational interaction that results as service loads deform the tunnel support against the adjacent rock mass. The procedures developed for solving this problem are an application of matrix structural analysis. The principles involved in this method allow for the consideration of the deformable characteristics of most tunnel support systems and an iterative solution procedure is applied to determine the areas of support-rock interaction. Numerical results of example problems are given.

Scientific elite of the Minerals Beneficiation Div. assembled in Denver, Colo., September 17 to 20 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Froth Flotation in the United States of America. In his warm address of welcome at the opening luncheon, John W. Vanderwilt, President, Colorado School of Mines, recalled his experience in Bonanza which coincided with the early days of flotation. In those years the scientific and engineering aspects of the process which we know today were little understood and operating the flotation circuit was considered an "art." Luncheon Chairman H. L. McNeill caught the flavor of the old days in an anecdote which recalled the mill nightmares to many present with the agonized words, "Oh God, what&apos;s happened to the concentrate now!" It was an appropriate gesture when he called the names of some of the flotation greats for presentation to the assembly; and many an "artist" there was among them!
