The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New- York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering' this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three-year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.

The short process of electric furnace steelmaking with direct reduction iron (DRI) as raw material is an important process for smelting high-quality and special steels. In order to prepare high-quality DRI, the pellets with basicity of natural basicity and 0.4 were prepared from magnetite concentrate (MR=0.09, MR=0.4) and hematite concentrate (HR=0.02, HR=0.4). Based on the HYL method, the gas-based direct reduction experiments were conducted under the condition of rich hydrogen (H2/CO = 2.6). The reduction index (RI), reduction swelling (RSI), cold compressive strength (CCS), and phase changes of the pellets were systematically studied. The results show that the RI of four kinds of pellets is greater than four in the temperature range of 800~950°C. For the magnetite pellets, at a fixed reduction temperature, the RSI increases and then gradually decreases, reaching a peak between 50 per cent and 80 per cent. Moreover, the RSI enhances with the increase of the reduction temperature. In general, the RI, RSI, and reduced CCS of the MR=0.09 pellets are better than those of the MR=0.4 pellets. For the hematite pellets, the maximum RSI decreases from 23 per cent to 17 per cent during hydrogen-rich reduction, while the compressive strength increases from 500 to 1070 Nꞏpellet-1. The main reason is that the glass phase generated by the increase of basicity adheres to the surface of hematite grains, hindering the contact between reducing gas and particles. As a result, the apparent activation energy is reduced, which is not conducive to the reduction process. In addition, the glassy phase attached to the hematite reduces the migration rate of Fe2+/Fe3+, resulting in a difference in the reduction expansion rate of hematite in the inner and outer layers of the pellet. Thus, concentric cracks are formed inside the pellets, the RSI increases and reduced CCS decreases.

Study of the distribution of minor elements between copper matte andfayalite slag is important in determining appropriate methods tomaximise the recovery of valuable metals and the rejection of harmfulelements. Boliden Mineral AB operate a large copper smelter in northern Sweden, where they had noted that the loss of silver to the slag in the settling furnace appeared to be a direct function of the tin content of the slag. This work was aimed at determining whether or not this was a cause-and-effect relationship. Copper matte containing approximately 50 wt per cent copper and small amounts of silver and tin was equilibrated with silica-saturated fayalite slag at 1250¦C, then quenched. The matte and slag were then analysed for their silver and tin contents. It was found that there was no relationship between the silver distribution and the tin distribution. The silver matte/slag distribution ratio had a value of 120 ¦ 40 while that for tin was 2.8 ¦ 0.3. It is suggested that the most likely cause of the relationship observed at the Boliden smelter was matte entrainment in the slag.

Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater's operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).

Production sharing and cost apportionment in joint ventures is commonplace in Australasia today and elsewhere. It is a recognised convention that, with the exception of a free carry situation, joint venture participants usually share the proceeds of the joint venture in direct proportion to their respective participating interest, after having first paid its respective cash calls, in advance, to cover the projectÆs ongoing operating and capital cost requirements.In surface mines, the parties simply pay their way and take their proceeds in this manner. In underground mines, the situation is no different, though treatment of capital, depreciation and tax may differ between the parties. A common feature in many cases is the creation of a joint venture entity to conduct the business. This entity then collects cash from the parties, banks it, employs the staff, runs the operation, provides reports and pays out the proceeds. This convention appears to be relatively simple in application. In practice, it has been known to be complicated in the situation where the participants take their product at the mine gate and undertake their own marketing and selling arrangements. A more complex situation presents itself where the joint venture tenement boundary with an unrelated third party straddles an economic deposit. In this scenario, both the joint venture parties and the third party may wish to mine the deposit, sharing some infrastructure and costs, yet taking their own product as it is produced. A case study outlining such a situation is presented in the paper, outlining firstly how the major cost categories were identified and treated for cost apportionment purposes. Secondly, a mechanism for the equitable apportionment of product is suggested. Finally, issues such as timing and cost reporting are dealt with, together with a checklist of points which should be considered when a similar situation might arise in the future.

Prior to 1972, Peko Mines Limited at Tennant Creek used a central mill at Peko, which consisted of a gravity circuit, flotation and cyanidation of tailings, to treat their gold ore from surrounding mines. The Warrego concentrator, 60km to the west, was built to handle the Warrego and Gecko copper orebodies, which were being developed concurrently with the concentrator construction The Warrego concentrator consisted of a flotation circuit, using autogenous grinding at 100 - 120 tph, compared to the more elaborate Peko circuit employing rod mill - ball mill grinding capable of treating only 18 - 26 tph. During development of the Warrego copper mine a gold rich ore pod was located, because of which the mining plans were adjusted to allow simultaneous, separate extraction of the copper and gold ores. However, the plans for the concentrator were not affected as the gold ore could be carted 60km to the Peko central mill for processing.

In a modern economy there is a compelling case why governments should not own property rights to mineral deposits. Assuming they do, however, governments will use these constitutional rights to raise revenue. They have two basic instruments to achieve this; a royalty charge on price or a rent tax on income/profits. On the one hand, a royalty charge creates a 'deadweight loss' to society by increasing cut-off grades and decreasing the life-of-mine. They are also regressive. However, they are easy to administer. On the other hand, a rent tax avoids the problem of 'deadweight loss'; it does not impact on the life-of-mine because the tax structure is neutral. But, they are difficult to administer correctly, particularly in the determination of rents and the definition of mining per se. If rents are incorrectly determined capital markets are distorted. And, if mining activities are incorrectly defined, downstream activities could be adversely affected.

Bacteria can play a key role in the processing of 'difficult' ores. Bioleaching opens the way to potentially extract copper from vast amounts of otherwise hard to process refractory low-grade chalcopyrite. In my talk I will outline our research philosophy to develop bioleaching as a Precision Processing unit process step. In our view, Precision Processing is a sophisticated approach to mineral processing where the ultimate goal is to measure and characterise the ore body in-ground and in real time during mining, allowing the down-stream unit processes (bioleaching, in this case) to be continuously tailored and tuned via feedback and feed-forward controls to obtain the highest possible recoveries at the lowest possible cost and environmental impact. I will describe some of the work that we are undertaking to better understand the interfacial phenomena underlying the fundamental bioleaching process with the aim of coming to a Precision Processing approach. We use techniques such as interfacial electrochemistry (scanning electrochemical microscopy, SECM), AFM, zeta potential measurement, and synchrotron science to elucidate the parameters that drive bacterial selectivity and adhesion, bacterial metabolism, and dissolution and precipitation processes for model systems and real chalcopyrite ores. As examples of our research, I will discuss in some detail our method to produce and characterise micro-patterned CuxS - silica thin films as model substrates for electrochemical and bacterial adhesion work and our approach to the interfacial chemical characterisation of extracellular polymeric substances of bio-active bacterial cells. I will also cover some of our recent findings relating to measurement and interpretation of bacterial adhesion on sulfidic substrates and its implications for bacterial adhesion and substrate selectivity. After having identified and discussed crucial leaching parameters, such as pH, Eh, T, [Cu2+], and [O2], the talk will go on addressing some of the early achievements and challenges encountered in our work to design and prepare low-cost, rugged sensing devices that allow the in-situ (in this case, in-dump or in-heap) localised measurement of these parameters. I will conclude my talk by painting the picture of how the work of our group might contribute to realising the dream of transforming bioleaching into genuine high-tech Precision Processing of minerals. "Geometallurgical programs require the collection of representative samples for geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical test work. Such protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The distribution, proportion and size of gold particles have a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling and test work protocols, and the gold recovery processes employed. Characterisation studies focusing on ore mineralogy, and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. High resolution X-ray computed tomography provides a non-destructive method for analysing the 3D nature of gold in rock samples. It can be used to calculate the modal abundance, particle size and distribution of gold in the sample volume. This paper presents a case study of the imaging of in situ gold particles in a high-grade gold ore. The Nick O’Time reef system comprises laminated quartz veins, which locally bear extreme grades of up to 100 oz/t gold. The mineralisation has previously been characterised from both a mineralogical and metallurgical perspective. Eight visible gold-bearing vein samples were scanned using X-ray microtomography. Mining is recognised as being one of the most dangerous industries in the world due to the difficult working conditions. Working in such hazardous circumstances in an underground mine often results in a variety of accidents. The working conditions at Kazakhstan’s underground mines have deteriorated owing to a lack of a risk-reduction plan and methodology. This paper evaluates different underground mines in Kazakhstan and demonstrates the employed mining method and the observed failure modes. Risk assessment has long been recognised as a valuable technique for preventing accidents. In the underground mining sector, risk assessment tools play an important role in avoiding work-related accidents. However, geotechnical uncertainty is a significant source of severe incidents like stress-induced roof collapse, wedge failure, seismicity etc, which result in human and financial losses. A geotechnical risk assessment performed early in the mine design process might assist justify a different mine design component, such as different support systems for a dangerous location within the mine openings during mining. The goal of this research is to create a damage/failure database aiming at the development of a geomechanical risk assessment methodology. This work identifies a thematic structure linked to risk assessment and management for the examined Kazakhstan mining sector. As part of the developed database, the dominant modes of failure within the Kazakhstan underground mining conditions were investigated. The study will provide opportunities to establish future research objectives for Kazakhstan’s mining industry where there are significant gaps between state-of-the-art research and mining operations in practice.

Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. These types of models provide inputs for LCA of mining and mineral processing plants and can identify water saving opportunities through scenarios and process route analysis.CITATION:Northey, S and Haque, N, 2013. Simcoa Operations is the only silicon smelter in the region and since the plant was commissioned in late-1989, has progressed from supplying silicon metal to the secondary aluminium market to the current position of supplying in excess of 90 per cent of its production to the high quality chemical and primary aluminium markets. This position has been achieved through the unique advantage which Simcoa has developed within the industry, namely raw materials, people and Simcoa's ability to adopt and use modern technology. A quality culture was instilled into the workforce prior to commissioning which ultimately led to AS3902 qualification in 1992. Simcoa has continued its quality drive through the formation of 'Simcoa's Quality Leadership Process' which is planned to make Simcoa the best silicon producer in the world.

Hydraulic mining shovels can be successively used at open-pit mining operation in severe climatic zone with air temperature interval from -700C to +450C typical for some northern region of the world particularly of Russia, Canada and Sweden, if they would be equipped by special preheating facilities for their diesel engine, water, hydraulic oil and lubrication systems. All shovels manufactured by the Komatsu Mining Germany GmbH for operation at ambient air temperatures down to -50¦C have cast and forged structural design elements, bolted connections made of special steel grades, electric cables with special insulation, flexible high-pressure hoses manufactured by ICE-Champion with connectors made of special steel grades.Generally at the temperatures below -25¦C the ordinary machine has to be stopped, the attachment should be placed in the parking position, the generator should be switched on, or the external electrical power supply connected, for the preheating equipment. For rapid start-up in winter after a long shutdown of a hydraulic shovel, there is a procedure for preheating of the main systems. It is applied for the following systems: engine cooling system, engine oil, hydraulic oil, pumps and drive motors of the propel gears, electric cabinets, machinery house, especially near the ventilation inlets and outlets.Start-up of the main drive engine is permitted at a hydraulic oil temperature of -20¦C, when it has a viscosity of 1000 cSt. In this case the rotation speed of the diesel engine crankshaft is lower by two times than the nominal value and this is the most favourable condition of start-up of the engine and hydraulic pumps and motors, which work with half of their rated rotation speed until the hydraulic oil reaches a viscosity from 100 to 10 cSt. After that the hydraulic system and the entire shovel begin to operate under normal conditions.

A cut-off grade is used to distinguish an economically viable block of ore from non-economical ones in mining operations. In order to obtain a high Net Present Value (NPV), a strategic and precise determination of cut-off grades (mill feed/marginal, marginal/waste) is required. In recent years, the significant depletion of feed grades and increasing mining operating costs have affected the viability of new and existing mining operations. Hence, the introduction of a pre-concentration system to process ore before sending it the main processing plant has gained increasing attention for its potential improvements in resource exploitation processes, mineral processing, energy consumption and environmental impacts. The primary potential advantage of implementing a pre-concentration system is the improvement of resource utilisation and increased reserves as a result of a reduction in cut-off grade. The objective of this paper is to present a new cut-off grade method, which can be used in the presence of a pre-concentration system for underground metalliferous mining operations. The results of this study illustrate the potential economic benefits of using a pre-concertation system prior to a mineral processing operation as a result of the reduced cut-off grade and increased NPV.

The transition from exploration to feasibility is a stage in the development of mineral resource projects that is frequently not handled well. The transition marks a point in the project development process where resource evaluation priorities change significantly from the discovery of mineralisation and the rapid assessment of the potential tenor of the mineralised system, to the detailed assessment of the deposit.   Information used in the exploration process tends to be of a qualitative or theoretical nature initially, but gradually becomes more quantitative in character as geological knowledge relating to individual prospects grows.   The transition from discovery and rapid exploration of a new deposit occurs at a relatively early stage in project development, coinciding with the first attempt to prepare a resource estimate for the deposit. Fundamental assumptions regarding both structural and grade continuity and uncertainty inherent in existing information need to be made so that they themselves may be addressed during the collection of additional data.   The effective commencement of feasibility studies involve the introduction of new accountabilities either as a result of appointment of a project manager, and through needing to be able to quantify: ò     the quality of data being collected for resource evaluation purposes; ò     confidence associated with resource estimates; and ò     the need to develop an audit trail for the project, required to make the resource evaluation decision-making process as transparent as possible.   Quality assurance is a concept to which exploration geologists have frequently had little exposure. Being able to demonstrate the quality of data used in feasibility studies is, however, a crucial component of the overall risk management and reduction.   Development of a transparent audit trail for data assists in demonstrating the quality of data which is frequently perceived to translate directly to confidence inherent in resource estimates.   Establishing procedures for geological data collection and management also provides a more reliable framework for making decisions that impact on project execution, again resulting in improved confidence in resource estimates and associated geoscientific data.   Regular, independent technical audits, in principle similar to audits conducted for the ongoing certification of standards compliant quality assurance systems, are a major, positive factor in effective project management and execution.   Information used in project evaluation, feasibility and development must be based on facts. Facts are effectively observations that are ideally made systematically, recorded in a systematic manner, and by being collected effectively are not subject to change.   Effectively managing the transition from exploration to resource evaluation, feasibility and project development involves recognising the nature of changes in the nature, detail and scope of geoscientific data required at each stage of project development. In doing so it is essential to: ò     recognise when the change occurs (as early as preparation of the initial resource estimate for a project); ò     accept that the change may not be gradual; and, ò     ensure that the project evaluation team is adequately resourced.   These objectives require recognition of the value of previous experience and the need to instill a true team approach amongst both staff and contractors associated with the project. Regular formal and informal communications between staff, contractors and other stakeholders in the project are an essential tool in ensuring personnel are aware of factors affecting their role in the project.

Lode gold deposits of the Western and Eastern provinces, South Island, New Zealand , formed as a part of the Cordilleran-style tectonism during Tasman/Tahua and Rangitata orogenesis along the Paleozoic-middle Mesozoic southern Gondwanan margin. These deposits, hosted by lower grade greenschist facies sedimentary rock sequences of the Buller, Takaka, Torlesse, and Caples terranes, universally show geological features that are consistent with the orogenic gold deposit model, and genetic features are generally suggestive of a metamorphic origin, with the possible exception of a magmatic fluid source for the mineralisation at Sams Creek. However, ore fluid chemistry in Mesozoic deposits of the Eastern province, particularly the low concentration of non-aqueous volatiles and the very dilute nature of the fluids, is uncharacteristic of most orogenic gold deposits; this must be explained by either a unique fluid source or fluid type, which we believe unlikely, or an unrecognised significance of relatively rare gas-rich fluid inclusions in the deposits. Absolute age data for gold deposits in both provinces remain equivocal, thus hindering definition of the exact temporal relationship between ore formation and terrane accretion, regional metamorphism, and magmatic arc emplacement. Mercury and antimony occurrences in subgreenschist grade parts of the Haast Schist may target the upper levels of unrecognised orogenic gold deposits. If low-grade, high-tonnage intrusion-related gold systems occur on the South Island, then they are most likely to be discovered in association with the small molybdenite-, scheelite-, or cassiterite-bearing quartz stockworks spatially related to the Karamea and Median batholiths.

Mining law has developed in Great Britain (GB) over centuries, mainly in response to lessons learned after disasters and other major incidents. This has led to a culture of preventing repeat accidents, rather than predicting and controlling unsafe acts or conditions.This paper explains how, initially in response to a government drive to reduce the burden on industry, the opportunity was taken to review and reform all 48 sets of GB mining-specific law into a single document. The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit is located at elevations of up to 3100 metres above sea level, in the Central Highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, 35 km NNW of the Grasberg porphyry deposit. Wabu is a grass-roots discovery in an area with no previous gold mining history or record of gold mineralisation. A geological resource of 117.26 million tonnes at an average grade of 2.16 g/t Au (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) has been defined to-date. Mineralisation is hosted within a skarn occurring along the southern boundaries of the Late-Miocene age monzonite-diorite Pagane intrusive complex. The intrusive complex occurs in the footwall of a major EW structure, the Derewo fault, which displays sinistral strike-slip and reverse fault movement. The Derewo fault separates Derewo metamorphic units to the north from platform sediments of the Australian craton to the south. The skarn has a strike length of 6 km and is up to 1.5 km wide. It is developed within calcareous shelf sediments of the Tertiary New Guinea limestone group and is dominated by prograde garnet development. Gold mineralisation was deposited during retrograde alteration and is directly associated with arsenophyrite and bismuth minerals. Retrograde alteration is distinguished by a sequence of clinopyroxene , magnetite, epidote and hornblende, biotite and chlorite and lastly carbonate. Gold is associated with the biotite/ chlorite phase together with sulphides and precipitated as the result of fluid mixing. The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit was identified in April 1990 during a regional program of helicopter assisted stream sediment sampling of -80 mesh (180 microns) fraction and panned concentrate sampling. The initial discovery sample site was situated 15 km down stream from the deposit and returned 1.49 ppm Au for the stream sediment sample and 138 ppm Au for the panned concentrate sample. A regional airborne helicopter magnetics survey, conducted in early-1992, helped defined the main magnetite associated skarn zone and the extent of associated igneous rocks. Detailed follow-up commenced in May 1992 and consisted of detailed mapping, soil sampling and ground magnetics prior to drilling the first hole in October 1992. Drilling to-date has delineated a contained geologic resource of 8.1 million ounces of gold and potential exists for a larger resource.
